"Understanding controls on groundwater and surface water flow and quality at mine sites throughout all mine stages is critical to effectively manage environmental impacts over the entire mine life. Monitoring forms is an essential component of this proof of understanding. Typically, monitoring programs at mine sites have been developed in the framework of existing conditions. However; recognition of the challenges of climate change and the performance of mines during recent extreme events in Australia has highlighted the need to develop monitoring programs that are resilient and responsive to changing environmental conditions. Water monitoring programs need to be effective under a range of environmental conditions, potentially not historically experienced.This emerging challenge requires cross-disciplinary teams to work together to understand issues including: representativeness of background conditions to longer-term conditions at the mine site sensitivity of mine and closure designs to changing climate and hydrologic conditions methods of performance (eg water quality or quantity) failure during extreme climate events such as flood or extended drought.These understandings come together in a detailed conceptual and, in many cases, numerical hydrologic model that considers the mine-water environment under a range of conditions. The groundwater, surface water and water quality monitoring programs that are developed from the conceptual model need to be sufficiently responsive to be effective in the face of such changing conditions, with results in turn informing the conceptual model. Extended drought, major floods and changing weather patterns can alter recharge and discharge areas, oxidation profiles and ultimately, the contaminant flux estimates that would have contributed to mine design parameters and performance. Unless these effects are considered in the spatial and temporal design of the monitoring program and within the parameters monitored, the resultant program may fail to capture data that are critical to evaluating environmental impacts from mine sites.Developing and implementing a water monitoring program that considers these issues can build confidence in mine performance under a range of conditions, leading to increased confidence by all stakeholders in long-term mine performance during and after closure.CITATION:Weaver, T R, Price, A D, Patterson, O and Germs, W J, 2013. Mining of low grade deposits along with the necessity to design and operate flotation plants with high throughput presents unique metallurgical and environmental challenges that need to be addressed to reduce project risks, improve project economics and to sustain the profitability of operations over the life of a mine. Some of the key challenges include poor recovery of valuables and concentrate quality issues due to complex mineralogy, the need to use poor quality water such as brackish or sea water, reduce environmental impact from the process, integrate flotation with hydrometallurgy to maximize precious metals recovery, escalation of capital and operating costs, use of unproven technology and constant use of larger equipment, high ore variability, worldwide constraints on resource availability and an ever increasing need for reliable metallurgical input to financial models to evaluate economic viability of projects. The need to develop effective solutions to these problems in a short time frame is becoming a key to the success of any new project and for sustaining the profitability of a mining operation. An integrated multi-disciplinary approach to problem solving is crucial with the need for a more lateral thinking along with strategic partnerships and collaboration involving the right players. The copper stave was a development of the Blast Furnace cooling system intended to utilise the high heat transfer properties of copper within a fully covered shell cooling solution. They were originally conceived as being able to provide a permanent cooling lining for use primarily in the higher heat zones of the Blast Furnace. Despite a large number of campaign successes around the world the everlasting concept has not proven universal, with some plants having suffered issues in two particular areas: stave bending (leading to water leaks at back of the stave) and stave wear (erosion on the hot face). Primetals Technologies have in the past been approached to provide assistance to a number of Blast Furnace operators who were experiencing operational issues with the copper stave furnace cooling systems of others. Through knowledge gained resolving these issues, and with the positive experiences of their own copper stave designs, Primetals Technologies have worked towards developing a new concept in copper stave design capable of providing a more robust solution to cope with the greater productivities of modern ironmaking. This paper will provide an outline to the concepts that have driven the design of this new technology.

The Deep Ore Zone (DOZ) Mine is PT Freeport Indonesia's (PTFI) newest operation. Production at the mine began in September 2000. The DOZ Mine produces 25 kt/d (27,500 stpd) using mechanized block cave mining methods. The DOZ Mine has several major improvements when compared with previous block cave mines in the district. It has an independent and improved ventilation system, a flexible and efficient truck haulage system, and a more reliable crushing and conveying system. PTFI's copper and gold mining complex is located in the Ertsberg mining district in Irian Jaya, Indonesia (Fig. 1). The Ertsberg district is located in the Sudirman Mountains at elevations from 3,000 to 4,500 m (9,800 to 14,700 ft) above sea level. The topography is extremely rugged and rainfall in the mine area averages 3,000 mm/a (118 in./year). Freeport began production in the district in 1972 when the mill began processing ore from the Ertsberg openpit. Underground mining began in 1980 when the Gunung Bijih Timur-Ertsberg East (GBT) Mine was brought online using block caving methods. In 1991, the GBT Mine reached a maximum production rate of 28 kt/d (31,000 stpd). Ore from the mine was exhausted in 1994. The Intermediate Ore Zone (IOZ) was brought into production in 1994. It, too, used block caving methods and had a design rate of 10 kt/d (11,000 stpd). The IOZ is currently producing at a rate of 21 kt/ d (23,000 stpd). The DOZ was discovered in the mid-1980s by deep drilling from the GBT. The GBT, IOZ and DOZ deposits are all situated in the Ertsberg East Skarn System (EESS). In 1993, the first of several studies was completed that indicated that portions of the DOZ Mine could be economically mined using block caving methods. Limited development was started in 1995. Full-scale development and construction began in late 1997. The crusher and conveying system began operating during the first quarter 2000. The first of two main exhaust shafts has been com¬missioned, along with three of the four new main fans. The second exhaust shaft and fourth main fan will be in service by the end of 2001. Undercutting and production began in September 2000. The DOZ Mine will reach its design production rate of 25 kt/d (27,500 stpd) in 2003. A study is under way to determine if an ultimate production rate of 35 kt/d (38,500 stpd) is feasible.

Ridgeway Deeps is a block cave (BC) located down dip of the operating Ridgeway sublevel cave (SLC) mine. The BC is located approximately 210 m vertically below the lowest SLC level and approximately 1100 m below surface. Due to the mine layout containing a number of common pieces of key infrastructure the activities of both were interlinked.When investigating project construction options for the BC, a number of potential risks were identified including a conflict of priorities between operational and project deliverables and the varying safety and work methods between an owner mining approach in the SLC and a potential contractor workforce in the BC. This led to a review of the construction philosophy and the opportunity to utilise the existing SLC workforce as the basis of all activities in the mine. It was identified that a number of synergies existed with the current SLC operators and mine supervision including common work practices and the opportunity to build on the unique SLC skills of the operators and supervisors which could then be used at other Newcrest caving mines.With the commitment to this philosophy of building on the existing SLC crews and supervision the number of employees reporting through the superintendent underground operations grew from 95 to 245. This increase led to a restructuring of the reporting and work requirements of the superintendent, foremen and shift bosses. In order for the foreman and shift bosses to focus on running the larger crew numbers for the full 12 hour shift the mine superintendent became a pseudo human resources manager taking over all non-mine focused activities including overtime allocation and work and behavioural performance management. In simple terms, ensuring there were competent bums on seats when and where required. As the additional workers were recruited to top up the existing employee numbers, their employment history was used to place them in the most suitable roles. For example, those with building industry experience were placed on the civil construction crews and those with a farming background were used as truck drivers, nippers or on the service crews. To cope with the increased number of new starters a number of key personnel were seconded from the crews into the training group to act as on shift trainers. This initially caused a reduction in mine performance as the main operators were reassigned but it proved a valid move as the time for new operators to reach acceptable levels was significantly reduced with safe operating standards being maintained. This paper discusses how the Ridgeway Deeps Project was delivered on time and under budget whilst at the same time retaining its position globally as an operation to be benchmarked against.

One of the oldest settled portions of Canada is that "strip of land" extending into the Gulf of St. Lawrence, known as the Gaspe peninsula, with the Bay of Chaleur on its southern boundary. This "strip of land" is still so very sparcely populated that only at a few places does settlement extend more than a few miles from the coast. ? The peninsula is 160 miles long, 75 miles wide and with the exception of the above mentioned settlements is a mountainous wildness-void of all roads or inhabitants. Developments in the interior, of all nature, out-side of the cutting of timber by limit holders, was entirely lacking until the year 1915, when mining was first commenced. In the summer of 1844 Sir William Logan made a preliminary survey across the peninsula, from Cape Chat on the Gulf of St. Lawrence to Cascapedia on the Bay of Chaleur, passing through a country ?of which very little was known at that time. After a rather rough trip to the headwaters of the Grand Cascapedia river, Logan's party descended this river to its mouth, passing ten miles west of what is now known as the Federal mines. There is no record of Logan, or of any of his party, finding zinc or lead ores of any character on their journey across the peninsula, and until 1909 no precious or base metals were discovered within reasonable distance of Logan's survey.

The development of a method to manufacture diamonds has been rated as one of the out- standing scientific achievements of our time. The story is both interesting and significant. This paper will quickly review history of diamond and manufactured diamond. Next, it will discuss manufactured diamond as a product -- how good is it -- and what is the significance of this scientific achievement. And finally, present a few thoughts about the future of this technology and this product. For centuries, diamond was found only in alluvial deposits, primarily in the Golconda fields of India. As a result, man knew nothing of the process by which the stones were formed. In 1860, diamonds were found in South Africa under completely different conditions. Here, for the first time, they were found in volcanic pipe -- their mother ground. These volcanic pipes are roughly cylindrical columns of rock which go deep within the earth. The theory as to the formation of diamond was presented by the geologists in that era. The theory states that molten rock was thrust up through a layer of carbonaceous shale where it picked up the carbon necessary for diamond formation. It was generally agreed that diamond was formed approximately 240 miles below the surface of the earth, thus indicating that extremely high temperatures and pressures were involved.

Microsegregation manifests its effect on microstructural evolution of cast or welded alloys which in turn influences their important mechanical and electro-chemical properties. In the above context, mathematical models of microsegregation have proven to play an important role in estimating the nature and predicting the effects of this phenomenon in wide varieties of solidification processes. Microsegregation models are useful in designing new commercial alloys, in estimating the homogenization time for the post-process heat treatments and in many other practical applications. In this study, two semi-analytical models of microsegregation were developed to predict the concentration field of solute in the liquid and solid regions for dendritic solidification of binary metallic alloys. Both models assume that the growing dendrites are cylindrical in shape. This assumption is more realistic compared to the common assumptions of plate like dendrites that most of the earlier researchers employed in their microsegregation modeling study. The solute redistribution profile, in the developing solid layer, necessary to determine the back diffusion parameter was derived from Fick's second law for the model without coarsening. The application of this parameter in a wide range of conditions and the use of its basic form in the model with coarsening has been verified. The concept of coordinate transformation and enhancement of back-diffusion Fourier number were used in deriving the model which took into account the coarsening of dendrites. The models are then extended to deal with rapid solidification and peritectic transformations and the results were compared with relevant experimental data for Aluminum and other alloys. A good agreement between model predictions and experimental results was found.

The Florida Institute of Phosphate Research (FIPR) has funded a four-year research project to develop a computer model 'which will predict the hydrologic impacts of phosphate mining on surface and groundwater systems. The core of the model is an analytical geographic information system (SPANS) which integrates EPA's Hydrology Simulation Program Fortran (HSPF) surface water model with the McDonald-Harbaugh groundwater model (MODFLOW). The hydrologic model conducts both event and continuous annual Simulations driven by variable precipitation and temperature data. The model is currently being calibrated and will be ready for distribution to the user community in mid-1991.

High and intermediate temperature fuel cells (FC) are power generators characterized by high efficiency and their use in cogeneration systems. The single fuel cells are connected in series by the use of interconnects to form a fuel cell stack. Ferritic stainless steels have been used in the making of high and intermediate temperature operation solid oxide fuel cells interconnects. However, at high temperatures, on the order of 700-8500C, these steels can present significant oxidation and degradation processes, promoting increased electrical resistivity and corrosion losses that result in contamination of the electrodes and reducing the performance and the useful life of the FC. Intensive R&D activities have been made to minimize these problems and the use of composite coatings on metallic substrate has been considered. This paper evaluates the use of coatings of copper and nickel, with particles of La2O3, Y2O3, CeO2, LaCrO3 and doped chromites applied on ferritic stainless steels AISI 430, AISI 441 and Crofer22APU produced by electrodeposition. The produced samples were evaluated by microscopy techniques, gravimetric analysis and by electrothermal characterization. The most significant results were obtained with chromites coatings (LaCrO3 pure, mono- and multiple-doped) showing the combination of the best features of metal coatings, substrates and ceramic particles with semiconductor properties.

Introduction In October 1983, Rio Algom Ltd. decided to develop the East Kemptville tin deposit. This decision was the result of intensive geological and metallurgical evaluation work, as well as careful studies of environmental and marketing aspects. The property is located about 54 km (34 miles) northeast of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, near the village of East Kemptville. Geology The geological setting is a granitic intrusive at the contact with metasediment. The tin mineralization is in the form of cassiterite (SnO2), which is about 80% tin. Sulfides are associated with the deposit containing silver, copper, and zinc, which are recoverable as byproducts. The mineralization is associated with quartz veins and greisen alteration. In the center of the deposit, the zones are so close together they have the appearance of a massive or porphyry type deposit. Ore Reserves The mine plan is based on 56 Mt (62 million st) at 0.165% tin. Up to the ninth year, mill feed will average about 0.2% and lower grade material will be stockpiled. In later years, the average grade will be 0.16% tin. A 0.08% cutoff grade is planned for the entire 17 years of production. East Kemptville is a relatively low grade tin deposit, and only a combination of favorable circumstances has made it economic. • The ore body is situated at, or very close to the surface, permitting mining by open-pit methods at a very low stripping ratio. • The tin occurs in relatively large crystals that allow for good recovery by gravity techniques. • It is ideally located in a well-settled area, with all essential infrastructural requirements already in place. • The positive and cooperative response from various governmental agencies involved are encouraging. Mine Plan The mine plan incorporates an initial pit, followed by three expansions to the ultimate pit. Mining will be at 14 kt/d (15,000 stpd) and will include 9 kt (10,000 st) of ore plus 5 kt (5,500 st) of waste and low grade. After five years, the mining rate will increase to 21 kt/d (27,500 stpd). It is planned to drill vertical 165-mm (6.5-in.) blast holes on a 6-x 6-m (20- x 20-ft) pattern. Bulk slurry explosives will be used to break the rock. Loading will be with hydraulic shovels into 70 t (77 st) haulage trucks. The trucks will deliver the ore to a 13 x 20 m (42 x 65 ft) gyratory crusher, where it will be crushed to 150 mm (6 in.). Secondary and tertiary cone crushers will be used to further crush the ore to 13 mm (0.5 in.). Process Design Tin extraction technology is practically unknown in North America, but Rio Tinto Zinc, which has a 53% ownership in Rio Algom, is involved in tin production in the UK. Rio Algom has used this experience and expertise in metallurgical evaluation work and in tin-related aspects of plant design. Mineralogical and metallurgical test work have been performed, both on laboratory and pilot plant scales. Mineralogical work was done largely in the UK, the laboratory test program was carried out at the Lakefield research facility in Ontario, and pilot plant work was conducted in Australia. This program has resulted in significant improvements in recovery and concentrate grades, over best projections that could be made before this work was carried out. Concentrating Process The concentrator is being designed to process about 9 kt/d (10,000 stpd). The first step is to reduce the size of the ore to -700 µm (-24 mesh) in a rod mill/ball mill grinding circuit. The ball mill will operate in closed circuit with high capacity banana-type screens. A floor-bearing capacity test apparatus was designed and constructed to determine the true bearing capacity of soft floor materials beneath coal pillars or longwall face supports. The apparatus has been employed in entries up to eleven feet in height. Results of in-mine floor-bearing capacity tests suggested that the ratio of the soft fireclay thickness to the bearing plate width and the moisture content in the fireclay were the most critical parameters affecting the ultimate bearing capacity. Foundation engineering principles were applied to interpret the field test results to estimate the floor-bearing capacity beneath longwall face supports.

"To achieve an optimal metallurgical performance in the flotation process the bubble diameter should be between 0.5 and 2.5 mm. To control bubble size, frothers are added, reducing bubble size and conferring bubble stability against coalescence. However, the bubble generation mechanism determines predominantly the bubble size distribution produced. In mechanical flotation cells, bubbles are produced by the shear stress generated by a rotating blade on a gas stream. This mechanism produces a log normal bubble size distribution. In contrast, in column flotation, jetting gas injectors are commonly used in Chile and the bubble size distribution is bimodal with small and large bubbles. Bubbles larger than 2.5 mm mean a loss in surface area, while bubbles smaller than 0.5 mm move with the pulp stream and therefore collide less frequently with particles. In this paper, a new device based on a jetting sparger and a deflector disc (impinging jetting) is evaluated as an alternative sparger for column flotation.The new device was tested in a rectangular acrylic cell 1 m × 0.5 m × 3 m. High-speed cinematography was used to compare bubble generation with jetting and impinging jetting at different gas velocity in the nozzle (5–50 m/s). From the image analysis, it was observed that the deflector induces a shear stress, in analogy to a rotating blade but in this case the shear results from a high velocity gas hitting a static surface. The device was evaluated in a 0.5 m diameter 3 m high column. The McGill bubble viewer technique was used to compare the bubble size generated by jetting and impinging jetting. It was found that the Sauter mean bubble diameter reduced from 7.4 mm to 2.8 mm, when the jetting sparger was modified with the deflector. In the case of the impinging jetting sparger, 70% of the bubbles were in the effective range for flotation, while for the jetting sparger, only 10% were in the effective range."

"Expandable rock bolts are widely used in hard rock mines as an efficient ground control product. However, capacity and service life can be significantly reduced if the metallic body is subjected to corrosion. In some hard rock mines in the U.S., highly corrosive ground conditions exist, and it has been reported that inflatable rock bolts have corroded within a few months after installation. To provide mining industry a cost-effective inflatable bolt and combat the corrosion issues, Jennmar Corporation, Inc., and its subsidiary Keystone Mining Services, LLC (KMS), analyzed corroded bolt samples, identified root causes, evaluated properties of various coating materials, and developed a new inflatable rock bolt, Python M3TM, that is protected with an innovative PyFlexU2TM coating. The new generation Python M3 features improved steel chemistry for reliable performance, modified profile for better inflation, and surface preparation and coating application. The PyFlexU2 is impervious to liquid and air, durable, and UV resistant. With a flexible adhesive, and highly corrosion-resistant undercoating, and a very hard sacrificial surface coating, the PyFlexU2 coating system provides the Python M3 superior protection against chemical corrosion and physical scratch damage. The under-coating has exceptional flexibility and adhesion to prevent coating micro-cracks or fractures after bolt inflation and possesses excellent corrosion resistance to acids (pH <3), alkalis (pH >11), fuels, and salt solvents. The corrosion and scratch resistant PyFlexU2 coating offers very effective bolt protection for extra longevity in highly corrosive environments. The Python M3 coated with PyFlexU2 has been tested in the most challenging conditions, including laboratory corrosion tests in extreme acidic and basic solvents, rock slurry, and borehole scratch insertion tests. With demonstrated corrosion and scratch resistance, the product has been greatly welcomed by hard rock mines in the West and is currently installed in large scale. This paper identifies the root causes of the bolt corrosion, discusses the analysis process, and details laboratory and underground tests carried out on the Python M3 coated with PyFlexU2. The Python M3TM and PyFlexU2TM are subjects covered by pending U.S. Patent Applications assigned to FCI Holdings Delaware, LLC."

"The Eglinton-Crosstown Light Rail Transit line is a 19-kilometre corridor with a 10-kilometre underground portion currently being constructed by Metrolinx in Toronto through a densely populated urban environment. Tunneling works are being completed through two separate design-bid-build contracts that include consideration for a phased handover to a follow on contractor who will take ownership of the tunnels, including warranties, and will complete the stations and remainder of the system through a PPP delivery model including maintenance of the system for 30 years. Warranty provisions, settlement apportionment, tunnel leakage, potential delays and conflicts between contractors are just some of the risks the team managing tunnel contract integration had to consider when developing the PPP contract. This paper will present an overview of how these risks were assessed and allocated through the contracts and the strategies adopted to minimize risks to Metrolinx while ensuring successful procurement was maintained. INTRODUCTION The Big Move is a 25 year, $50 billion ($-CAD) plan for coordinated and integrated transportation in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) in Ontario, Canada. This plan has been initiated by Metrolinx, a division of the provincial government of Ontario, and its vision, goals and objectives are rooted in creating a high quality of life; a thriving, sustainable and protected environment; and a strong, prosperous and competitive economy for the GTHA. The Big Move will triple the length of rapid transit service in the GTHA to 1,725km, significantly increase the percentage of the GTHA population living within two kilometers of rapid transit, reduce commute times to an average of 77 minutes per person per day and decrease greenhouse gas emissions from passenger transportation per person by 29%. Work is currently underway on several projects and more than $16 billion ($-CAD) of the planned investment has already been committed. A key project that forms part of this commitment is the Eglinton Crosstown Light Rail Transit (LRT) Project which is being delivered in the City of Toronto under Metrolinx’s Rapid Transit (RT) Program. This complex and sizeable undertaking has been broken into a number of separate contracts comprising: LRT Vehicles contract; Eglinton West Tunnels Project; Eglinton East Tunnels Project; and a Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) contract to complete the underground stations, at-grade stops, all rail infrastructure and systems and to maintain the entire system for 30 years. The PPP contract, which includes an initial capital portion of approx. $5.1 billion ($-CAD), has recently been awarded to Crosslinx Transit Solutions, a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) consortium comprised of SNC Lavalin, Aecon, Dragados and EllisDon."

"The Gosowong Gold Project is owned and operated by PT Nusa Halmahera Minerals (PT NHM), an Indonesian company 75 per cent owned by Newcrest. It is located on Halmahera Island, in the North Maluku Province of the Republic of Indonesia, approximately 2450 km north-east of the national capital, Jakarta (Newcrest, 2017).Kencana is one of two underground gold and silver mines at the Gosowong Operation where ground conditions vary from competent to very poor. Development headings occurring in poor rock mass conditions require high capacity ground support including long tendon cable bolts. Manual installation of cable bolts in these development headings has been a time consuming process due to borehole collapse, blockages requiring subsequent re-drilling and a minimum eight hour grout curing time interval. The installation of cable bolts including the setting, plating and tensioning can impact the critical path for development heading advance resulting in development cycle delays.A review was conducted by PT NHM on current industry practices for alternatives to manual cable bolting. PT NHM subsequently approached Minova to assist with the development and trialling of self drilling anchors (SDAs) installed using jumbos with a rapid setting pumpable resin, CARBOTHIXTM. A series of system development trials were conducted and a reliable bolting system was developed utilising the existing jumbo drilling fleet with minimal required modifications.The system developed was a ‘one pass’ bolting process to install and grout SDAs using a two component resin with a remote, mechanised system. Improvements achieved from the system include: eliminating hole closure issues and more immediate support in poor rock mass effectively reducing personnel exposure to poor ground conditions by removing the requirement to access the drive backs reducing grout set time with full installation times for 6 m SDAs averaging 25 min.The resin grouting system has now been successfully implemented to effectively manage areas of poor ground conditions and to accelerate advance rates in high priority headings.CITATION:Pateman, D and Sprague, T, 2017. Safe extraction of the valued ore resource in the deep levels of VALE Creighton Mine has progressed in a pillar-less fashion using vertical retreat, slot-slash and uppers retreat methods since the cessation of ?cut and fill? mining in the late 1980?s. Sequencing of the panel extraction and filling has been the key to successful exploitation of high stress orebodies at depth. In late 2010, discussions between the Operating Department and Creighton Ground Control revealed an opportunity to evaluate a trial primarysecondary sequence in the west end of the 400 Orebody at the 2340m horizon. To manage the trial primarysecondary project, a high level risk analysis and management of change was carried out to mitigate potential danger. As part of the requirements, an instrumentation project was conducted in the hanging wall and footwall bottomsills of the secondary panel and within the secondary panel itself. The extraction sequence was modeled with Map3D® software, confirming high stress levels with the advance of the primary panel. Enhanced ground support was installed based on modelling results. A key objective of the instrumentation project was to verify support system response to mining and to obtain knowledge in regards to the behavior of the stope. This paper describes the first time that this type of new innovative instrumented rockbolt technology had been used in a hard rock mining environment. Understanding of the physical deformation mechanisms of ground support in response to high stress conditions is the basis for an effective ground control strategy. The data played an important role in subsequent enhanced ground support system design at the mine and importantly, established the fact that the secondary pillar had not totally failed. Subsequent cavity monitor results helped establish that fact.

On January I, 1988, Chino Mines Company initiated the use of a system of economic splits for all materials encountered in mining. All mined material is evaluated as mill ore, solvent extraction-electrowinning plant feed and non-ore material to determine its disposition. Post-implementation studies indicate that a significant increase in financial returns on material mined was realized when compared with the copper cut-off grade previously in use.

Kanowna Belle Gold Mine is a deep, high-stress, sublevel open stoping mine located near Kalgoorlie. Seismic activity during the development cycle presented problems, including concerns regarding the exposure of personnel. A number of seismic management systems were developed and tested to monitor seismicity and control the risk. It was recognised that a dynamically capable reinforcement and support system was required to be installed as part of the development cycle to reduce the risk of exposure of the underground workforce to uncontrolled movement of rock. The performance of a new Garford Dynamically capable bolt was measured in tests performed by the Western Australian School of Mines (WASM) at their Kalgoorlie Dynamic Test Facility. Detailed descriptions of the facility and data processing were reported by Player, Villaescusa and Thompson (2004) and Thompson, Villaescusa and Player (2004). The development of the Garford Dynamic bolt is described and dynamic testing results are presented and evaluated. This bolt was implemented in the mining cycle following the testing program; the observed performance is described and assessed in this paper. &nbsp;

By applying high-end rolls with utmost performance and superior surface quality, hot strip mills can be further optimized. Operations in the mill have been also waiting for improved roll solutions that can minimize required roll changes which impact production efficiency. Limitations are usually due to the low performance and surface degradation of the rolls in the late finishing stands (F5 – F7). VICTURATM is the most recent developed grade for rolls utilized in the late finishing stand at Union Electric Åkers (UEÅ). These rolls have been tested and applied in mills all over the world. A significant improvement over the enhanced ICDP rolls has been observed. Hot strip mills are realizing improved operating efficiency and Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) through the transition of their entire roll inventories to these break-through products.
