The modern drilling fluids industry is a dynamic, evolutionary environment. It is continuously striving to satisfy and anticipate the ever-changing needs of the oil and gas industry. The predominant driving forces in the industry over the past decade have changed dramatically. Health and environmental issues, coupled with economic and performance requirements, demand innovation and change from the drilling fluids industry. Emerging drilling fluid technologies will demand environmental considerations from mined components with additional emphasis on cost and performance criteria. Drilling fluids providers continue to search for and identify environmentally sensitive components which meet or exceed the performance of their more toxic predecessors. These changes have and will impact the components of drilling fluids that are mined.

The Outokumpu Oy flash smelting furnace was designed for a capacity of 69,5 mtph of concentrate. The history of developments on the flash furnace, from the original operating capacity of 55 mtph to a proven capacity of 115 mtph of concentrate, is summarised. The new feature of operation at BCL Limited is ?the use of screened lump coal reduction in the settler region of the furnace. This paper considers the effects of settler bath reduction on the furnace smelting capacity, the condition of the furnace ?lining and bath, and ,the slag losses generated from the flash furnace and ultimately to discard. By using the settler bath reduction technique the capacity of the furnace for smelting new concentrate has been increased by 15% and hearth accretion has been eliminated by direct reduction with coal, which has also allowed the generation of a substantial protective lining on the furnace walls and roofs. As a result of improved slag losses from lump coal charging the metal recoveries on the flash furnace have increased from 70% to 87% for nickel, 68% to 82% for copper, and 28% to 45% for cobalt.

The paper describes the development of components in an lntegrated Furnace Control system for shielded-arc smelting focusing on operation and crucible integrity enhancement. The paper reviews the mechanisms of power, feed and energy input and losses into the shielded-arc smelting process and describes the furnace control system module development and integration to tailor the process. The ultimate success of a furnace control system application is transfer of knowledge, training, and operational support during furnace start-up and ramp-up phases and a model for how this has been achieved is discussed. The control modules of a shielded-arc laterite smelting furnace are described in detail including measured results and screen captures from application in a laterite smelting furnace. This paper focuses on developments in Integrated Furnace Controls tailored to shielded-arc laterite smelting but development of common furnace control modules for improved crucible and tapping operation integrity applied to other furnace processes, including immersed-arc smelting, is also covered. Various models of near-surface kimberlite pipe emplacement have been proposed over the years. These include a top-down, phreatomagmatic model, a bottom-up, embryonic pipe model and three top-down explosive dyke models. AU of these models consider kimberlites as essentially the same rock type. However, different kimberlites have different pipe shapes and contain different rock types with very specific mineral assemblages and textures and therefore are likely to have been emplaced by different processes. Some authors have considered local geological differences as the principal reason for the contrasting geology but others argue that, while geological differences might contribute locally the petrographic peculiarities of particular kimberlites may be due mainly to inherent compositional differences specifically in the ratios of juvenile CO2 and H2O.

Ferromanganese production in electrical furnaces is quite an old process. However, as the furnaces are getting bigger, the requirements of cost, yield, product quality, emissions and security are raised. With the increased expectations, the fundamental knowledge must follow. Within the last 25 years there has been a great effort both in the industry as well as the academic environment to push the limits of this process. This article will show some examples of improvements within fundamental data, reaction mechanisms and emissions over this time period.

Positron emission particle tracking (PEPT) has become an important tool for flotation research, as it is able to resolve directly the behaviour of particles in laboratory scale flotation vessels. The first applications of PEPT to flotation showed only the motion of an individual particle in the pulp and the froth, but nonetheless allowed interpretations of behaviour not previously possible. Since then, PEPT measurement and data analysis techniques have improved significantly and now ensure a high level of confidence in the particle behaviour obtained. In particular, statistical analysis of long-duration experiments allows time-averaged data to be collated, ensuring spatial accuracy and allowing rigorous comparison of different conditions. It will be shown that these PEPT techniques can be used to compare directly the effect of operating conditions and particle properties in a laboratory flotation system. Particle tracks will be illustrated, as well as analyses of particle speeds, average flow streamlines and occupancy that show marked differences in behaviour near the interface and impeller.

MR. M. W. Boom: I would like to congratulate Mr. Russell on his fine paper. One very good point which has always appealed to me is the smooth working of a steam hoist as compared with electrical. He does not mention the steam hoist at Springhill which has been working there for a good many years. MR. S. R. NEWTON: I have read with a great deal of interest the paper presented by Mr. Russell on the development of haulage engines in the mines of the Dominion Steel & Coal Corporation. He is to be congratulated on having produced a comprehensive article showing, step by step, the various improvements that have been made over the years in the design of such engines. I am quite in accord with Mr. Russell's statement that the positive tooth clutch can have too many teeth, and also that the method of driving a sliding clutch hub of any design should be by means of a hexagon or octagon on the shaft. Where the clutch hub does not of necessity slide on the shaft it can be pressed on and keyed to the shaft in the normal manner. With regard to the 'Cramp' internal-expanding jaw-type clutch, while it is true there are more moving parts than with the clutch consisting of a ring with internal cut teeth and a driver having a fewer number of teeth as .described by Mr. Russell; there are compensating advantages to the internal expanding jaw-type of clutch. The V shaped profile of the teeth permits of engagement of the clutch with very much less 'jockeying' of the drum. This is particularly the case in vertical-lift mine hoists, where it may be necessary to engage and disengage the clutching mechanism at frequent intervals.

The sequential flotation of copper, lead, and zinc in that order is practised at the Broken Hill Concentrator of the Black Mountain Mineral Development Company (Pty) Limited. The minerals of economic importance are chalcopyrite, galena, and sphalerite, with associated silver. The targets for recovery and grade in the lead and zinc circuits were reached quite readily after start-up, but the copper circuit failed to meet the performance requirements with respect to both recovery' and grade. The original circuit for copper is described, together with the subsequent investigations and modifications that were required to produce acceptable metallurgical results. Circuits for semi-bulk and bulk flotation were tried, and the effect of the oxidation state of the pulp was investigated extensively and found to be all important. Tests were conducted on the depression of lead in the cleaning circuit by the use of sodium dichromate, and on heating with the addition of sulphurous acid. The latter technique was ultimately the more successful. The proportion of fresh to recycle water entering the circuit was shown to be important. The original reagent regime was altered and augmented. A more recent problem has been the contamination of the ore with cemented backfill. The changes that this new condition necessitated are described. Success has been measured by a continuous improvement in the economics of the copper recovery.

At Pasminco Mining's South concentrator. which was commissioned in 1952. an expansion. modernisation and efficiency improvement program commenced in 1986 with a coarse ore stockpile and grinding circuit expansion. the replacement of small flotation cells and the upgrading of reagent mixing and metering equipment. The program continued with the installation of a TDC 3000 based process control system (1988) and concentrate thickeners (1990). By mid-1991 a further grinding expansion and the installation of zinc flotation feed regrind ball mills and zinc recleaner column cells will be complete. leaving the use of ceramic disc fillers and development of process control strategies as probably the remaining major avenues for improved process efficiency at present.

An alternate development drilling strategy to the one currently in use at the nine was investigated using geostatistics for a portion of the pit. The study area consisted of 4,000' x 5,000' in plan and 1,080' in elevation. The massive orebody, the three-dimensional nature of the problem, and the location of ultimate pit limit in the study area all created some unique problems in devising the development drilling strategy, as compared to the two-dimensional tabular deposits such as coal deposits. Rather than using the confidence interval of the global reserve estimate as the main criterion for development drilling, the confidence interval of short and medium range mine planning blocks was used as the objective. Based on somewhat arbitrarily selected level of confidence, the results from this study showed that a total of 50 DDHs rather than the planned 62 DDHs is sufficient in the study area, if the selected confidence levels are acceptable to the management. This paper also emphasizes the importance of the particular objectives being used in development drilling and how they influence the "optimai" place- ment of the development drill holes.

BHP Minerals Ltd operates an open cut iron ore mining operation on Koolan Island, off the coast north of Derby in the Kimberley region of Western Australia. The mine comprises a number of pits, the largest of which is situated adjacent to the coast on the southern side of the island. The lowest bench is currently at RL +2 m, and the mine has planned ultimate depth of RL -82 m. Mining has already extended below the pre-existing water table level, and below mean sea level. In 1984, an extensive program of drilling, geophysics and test pumping was instigated to evaluate the aquifer hydraulic properties and the nature of the groundwater flow regime. With the aid of computer modelling, predictions have been made of the likely dewatering and depressurization requirements, and a conceptual pumping and drainage system has been designed.

The disposal of the phosphate slimes produced by Florida beneficiation operations is perhaps the biggest single problem of the phosphate mining industry. This is an old problem which has not been solved and which is becoming increasingly severe. In a typical phosphate mining operation, the phosphate rock mined is initmately mixed with sand and clay, constituting what is known as matrix. During the beneficiation, the clay and other fine materials are separated usually at -150 mesh, and washed from the phosphate rock in a form of diluted slurry known as phosphate slimes. The quantity of slimes solids and their composition vary considerably with the location but usually represent from 25 to 35% of the ore mined. Because of the affinity that clays have for water, large volumes of water are required to separate the granular material in the matrix forming a dilute slime suspension (1.5 to 3% solids) of colloidal material, which settles very slowly, and thus requires immense impounding areas, which never becomes totally usable land. At the Freeport Indonesia Grasberg Mine in Irian Jaya, Indonesia, a system of underground drainholes and surface drain wells have been designed and are currently under construction. The underground drainholes are located at elevations of approximately 9,600 feet and the surface drainwells located at elevations ranging between 12,500 and 13,000 feet. Together they will be used to drain the ground water contained within relatively incompetent rock. This drain system will allow for the successful dry mining of the open pit, and provide slope stability of the pit wall. The surface drain well network, when completed will allow for the draining of ground water to the Amole Drift where the underground drainholes are constructed.

Perhaps the most significant development in China's base metal sector is the discovery of major copper porphyries in northern Jiangxi Province and the adjacent southern Anhui Province. At the center of the new exciting district is the proposed Dexing copper complex, located some 350 km east of Nanchang, the provincial capital of Jiangxi. This project represents China's first attempt to put together a major large-scale open-pit operation, comparable in magnitude to Arizona porphyry operations. With the aid of Fluor Mining and Metals, the Chinese plan to develop a 135-175 kt/d open-pit mine, a matching large-scale mill, and the infrastructure needed to accommodate the big operations. An operation of this magnitude would significantly reduce China's import requirements by some 75%. China imports of the red metal are running around 200 kt/a. Under the direction of the Ministry of Metallurgical Industry, the Chinese are currently operating a 10-kt/d mine and mill with equipment primarily of Chinese origin. Dexing engineers told ME that they are considering a possible scale-up to 20 kt/d. How this effort will ultimately jell with the major expansion program is largely a matter of conjecture. Fluor Mining and Metals received a $10-million contract in December 1978 to develop a preliminary engineering and design program. While the original plans called for a 175-kt/d capacity complex, the Chinese subsequently decided to scale it down somewhat. The current proposal is around a 135 kt/d, which would in- elude the existing operation, according to Dexing engineers. Completion of the engineering and design phase is expected by March 1980 and a go-ahead decision will likely be made at that time. The value of the engineering and construction contract is estimated between $800 million and $1 billion. At right, mined ore is dumped 150 m down the mountain to a holding pocket below for rail haulage to the processing plant. Below, a Chinese miner tackles the universal problem of hard toes in the pit with a jack leg. Reserves and Early History The Dexing mineralization consists of three principal ore bodies, including the Chushahung on the north mountain, and the Tungchang and Fuchiawu on the south mountain. Combined ore reserves are estimated by mine geologists at 1.7 Gt of 0.4-0.5% copper. As is characteristic of porphyries, the ore contains important associated values of molybdenum, rhenium, pyrite, gold, and silver. There is also some secondary calcocite and bornite with an oxidized capping. Historically, copper was recovered with iron from the pregnant solutions emanating from the Tungchang deposit as early as the Tang Dynasty (700 AD). "The Dez River flows from the Zagros Mountains into the great Khuzestan plain, Southwest of Iran. The 203 m high Dez Dam is a double curvature thin concrete arch dam, with a Pulvino, founded on thick bedded to massive conglomerate of Bakhtiary Formation, mainly horizontal and very less jointed at the dam site. Construction work was completed in 1963, creating a reservoir with a total storage volume of 3’315 million m3. The dam body, with some 350’000 m3 volume and (W/H=1.1/1.0), is the dominant feature of the project.Geological and geotechnical studies at the dam site started in 1957 and continued during the whole period of dam construction. Simultaneously, two extensive programs of laboratory testing were carried out in New York and Milan.Most of the results were recorded in the project design documents and in two very well-known papers of Talobre et. al. (1964) and Dodds (1966), however, no detail results are available for most of tests.In order to estimate geomechanical parameters of the rock mass foundation for numerical modeling of the dam body and its foundation, reassessment of the in-situ and laboratory test results using the recent rock mechanics methods was required.This paper explains how the outcomes of those tests, performed more than 50 years ago, were reevaluated and how the definitions and parameters presented in the project reports were re-interpreted using the recent rock mechanics concepts and definitions. Computational chemistry methods, such as density functional theory (DFT), are powerful tools to quantify reagent-mineral interactions encountered in sulphide mineral flotation. A quantitative relationship between theoretically calculated parameters based on chemical structure of collectors and their reactivity with different metals/minerals can provide valuable insights for design and development of more powerful and tailor-made reagents offering enhanced metal/mineral selectivity. DFT calculations at B3LYP/6-311++G(3df,3pd) level were employed to elucidate the reactivity of neutral sulphide collector reagents, including thionocarbamates (TC), thioureas (TU), xanthogen-formates (XF), dialkyldithiocarbamates (DTC) and dialkyltrithiocarbonates (TTC) with different heavy metal ions (Cu2+, Zn2+ and Pb2+) in solution. The extent of delocalization of lone pair electrons of heteroatoms (attached directly to C in C=S) over C=S group was found to be the dominant factor in determining the collector’s reactivity. Order of reactivity was established as: TU > TC > XF > DTC > TTC. All the collectors showed superior affinity towards copper followed by lead. Unidentate binding was observed through sulphur atom except for xanthogen-formate for which bidentate binding mode was observed. Effect of nature of substituent groups at N and/or O atom on reactivity of thionocarbamate and thiourea was also investigated. The results obtained through DFT calculations are consistent with the experimental data reported in literature.

The importance of the grinding environment and its effect on sulphide minerals flotation behavior has been known for many years. The grinding environment may play a role in controlling fine and coarse particle flotation along with dissociation of different chemical species in grinding environment. Dissociation of different chemical species and ions within the process water may result from changing the grinding environment. The mining and mineral processing industry undertakes activities that may impact on water resources. These include use and storage of chemical storm-water management, process water management, mine dewatering and management of tailings. In mineral flotation understanding and controlling water quality is paramount important not only because of its effect on flotation but also with respect to control the quality of the water which is released to the environment. Releasing of different anionic and/or cationic chemical species in the process water results from the interactions among different mineral within the ore, process water, and the milling environment. In fact grinding mill acts as an electrochemical reactor which affects the flotation performances of different value minerals as well as the quality of the tailing products. An increasing in antimony content in process/discharge water at Boliden?s Tara processing plant in Ireland to above limitation level was reported in April 2010 which needed to be controlled. An increase up to 6 times of the permitted level was reported which needed an immediate action to control due to environmental considerations. Therefore attempts were made to detect why this higher amount of Sb is released and how to control and minimize its release to the process/reclaim water. This paper discusses how/why Sb content in process/reclaim water was increased by changing the mill electrochemistry and the strategies were taken into considerations to control it. Different strategies, including electrochemical controlling of the milling section, Fenton process, using Bauxsol in treating the process water, etc., have been considered and tested which are described herein. All strategies taken into consideration for solving the problem were successful which indicated good understanding of the issue and good decision making. Furthermore, for each solution the capital and operational costs were roughly estimated. Accordingly, the Sb content in process/discharge water was controlled to a value lower than allowed limitation, i.e., 1 ppm.
