This study of the relationship of the accumulation and drainage of oil to the structural conditions in the Wilmington oil field is presented with the hope that the data contained herein will aid in efficient exploita-tion of other fields where similar conditions exist. It is also probable that the conditions observed in this field will enable accurate comparisons of various well-spacing programs as to efficiency of production and ultimate recovery. Many factors affect mechanical properties of hypoeutectic Al-Si alloys. As examples the presence of impurities such as Mn and Fe due to the formation of intermetallic phases, additions of small amounts of alkaline earth metals and cooling rate in consideration of Si formation, they all have an impact on mechanical properties of hypoeutectic Al-Si alloys. In this investigation, the effect of Fe content into the specification range of A357 alloy, the addition of different modifiers consisting of Na, Sr and Ca for the alloy of A356 and different mounting techniques for separately cast test coupons of hypoeutectic Al-Si alloys using the lost wax method were studied. The results showed that using material with lower Fe content and addition of modifiers improve mechanical properties. Also different mounting techniques resulted in different mechanical properties.

Under specific geological environment, the full extraction of a coal seam is not possible either because of its extraordinary thickness or the presence of surface structures and bodies of water or because of the conditions prevailing in upper seams. Not uncommonly, therefore, for working such seams, pillars of coal are left for the permanent support of the overburden, and voids around the pillars are filled with sand to strengthen the pillars and prevent their deterioration with time. However, the paucity of river sand has focussed attention on the need for alternate strategies including trials with partial filling of the voids. This study has sought to examine in the laboratory the effects of partial and complete filling on the ultimate load bearing capacity and post-failure behaviour of small, tall pillars using artificial material.

Flotation feed density is an operating parameter which is currently not well understood. Most models of flotation only incorporate its effect on particle residence time, but it is likely to have additional effects within both the pulp and froth phases of the machine. Test work was performed in MetsoÆs 3 m3 RCS test rig to investigate the effect of flotation feed density on metallurgical performance. The rig was operated at Rio TintoÆs Northparkes operation using flotation feed and scavenger tail. For each feed, tests were performed at different feed densities, and measurements were performed to estimate the pulp and froth recovery as well as other key flotation parameters (eg bubble size, turbulence and froth stability). Results of this test work have shown that the pulp density does affect key parameters of the flotation process in both the pulp and froth phases. Pulp phase kinetic rates decrease at high density and this is attributed to a reduction in the turbulence within the cell. Froth phase recovery, however, improves presumably because of a stabilising effect due to a greater loading of solids on bubble surfaces.There is a need for more research to be done to better understand these interactions so that metallurgists can determine the optimum flotation feed density to use at a particular operation, or within a section of a flotation circuit.CITATION:Runge, K C, Tabosa, E, Crosbie, R and McMaster, J K, 2012. The effect of grain refinement on the tensile and fatigue crack propagation behavior of sand cast magnesium alloy AM60B has been investigated in the present study, C2Cl6 in the amount of 0,3% was used to grain refine the melt, The fracture toughness tests were conducted in laboratory air at room temperature (25°C) using a sine-wave cyclic frequency of 20Hz and a load ratio of R = 0,1, The response in the Paris's regime and the critical stress range were determined, Preliminary findings have shown that C2Cl6 has a significant effect on both the tensile properties and fatigue crack propagation of the alloy tested, Grain refinement increased both the yield and ultimate tensile strength by more than 46%, and decreased the crack growth rate from 2,7 to 1,4 MPa Vm , However, the grain size seems to have a smaller effect on threshold stress intensity factor range. The fracture surfaces of specimens were examined optically and under the scanning electron microscope (SEM) to determine the relationship between grain size and fatigue properties.

Minerals in coals cause operational problems in various coal utilization technology as well as act as diluents towards its heat value. Indian coals contain higher percentage of mineral matter compared to foreign coals due to its formation through drift origin. Efficient utilization of high ash coal in environment friendly manner is the driving force for the development of clean coal technology. Coal gasification offers practical means meeting stringent environment controlled parameters for producing power, chemicals, liquid fuels and clean energy on a single platform. It is well accepted that gasification technology has sufficient potential for sustainable development of clean coal technology. Gasification reactivity depends on the coal properties and operational parameters as well as minerals present in coal. Minerals not only create operational problems but on the other side also catalyze the gasification and combustion reaction. Therefore to understand the effect of minerals on the gasification reactivity, present paper proposes to study the variation of gasification reactivity with various gravity cuts such as, 1.4-1.5; 1.6-1.7; and 1.8-1.9 of a selected coal. Gasification reactivity has been studied by thermo gravimetric analyzer (TGA) using CO2 as gasifying agent. Surface properties such as, true density, apparent density, porosity, surface area of different gravity cut samples have also been measured to find out the effect of gravity separation on gasification reactivity. A prolonged grinding of sulphide ores in steel mills appears harmful to flotation recovery and selectivity whenever xanthates are used as collectors. Particles finer than about 10µm show a pronounced decrease in floatability. A supposition was made that the cause of the reduction in floatability of ground sulphides is the presence of metallic iron abraded during grinding and deposited on the ground particles. Electro- chemical measurements were made of mixed potentials developed by different sulphide-mineral electrodes (galena, chalcopyrite, pyrite, marmatite, pyrrhotite) in xanthate solutions, without a direct con- tact or in contact with a metallic iron electrode. These measurements showed that without a galvanic contact between the sulphide and the iron, the values of mixed potentials were in the vicinity of the xanthate/dixanthogen redox potential. When contact with iron was established, the mixed potentials shifted towards the more negative reducing or cathodic values. The shift was greater the higher was the ratio of the surface areas: iron electrode to sulphide electrode. Further, the shift in mixed potentials was greater the more reducing were the conditions on the sulphide electrode. Chemical analysis of reaction products produced on the surfaces of sulphides and in the bulk solution showed that less thiosulphate was formed in all of the sulphide-xanthate systems and that more elemental sulphur was detectable on the pyrite and marmatite surfaces. Adsorption of xanthate parallels the amount of thiosulphate formed with which xanthate is exchanged by metathesis. If the supply of oxygen is limited, the demand for oxygen by the abraded metallic iron competes with that by the valuable sulphide, resulting ultimately in poorer hydrophobicity. If excessive amounts of pyrite or pyrrhotite are present as well, the conditions are so reducing that there is little adsorption of xanthate ions on the valuable sulphides to make them hydrophobic and floatable. The presence of increased quantities of sulphur on pyrite or marmatite is responsible for a non-selective flotation. Flotation tests on synthetic mixtures with and without metallic iron powder in the feed confirmed the above conclusions from electrochemical and chemical measurements.

During linear friction welding of titanium alloy Ti-5A1-5V-5Mo-3Cr (Ti-5553), the weld zone exhibits beta (B) grain refinement and alpha (a) phase depletion that have the combined effect of deteriorating the mechanical performance of the weldment. In this work, linear friction welded Ti-5553 was subjected to pre- and post- weld heat treatments in order to determine the conditions under which a phase depletion could be mitigated in the weld zone and thermomechanically affected zone (TMAZ). The mechanical response of the welded samples to the heat treatments was determined by performing tensile testing at room temperature. While the pre-weld heat treatments had no significant effect, the post-weld heat treatments were instrumental in restoring the strength of the starting (heat-treated) material.

The role of solutionizing conditions within the T6 heat treatment of the cast Al-Si-Cu-Mg alloy with micro-additions of Zr-Ti-V was assessed in terms of their influence on microstructure and mechanical properties. As a solution treatment, a single step process at 485 and 510oC and a two-step process at 510 and 525oC for varying time intervals from 0.5 to 9 h, were examined. In all cases, solution treatment was followed by isothermal aging at 150oC for 100 h. The microstructural analysis showed that the solution treatment changed the eutectic silicon morphology from needle-like, present after casting, to spherical shape in the T6 state and that the extent of changes was strongly influenced by temperature and time. The Cu- and Mg-rich phases completely dissolved during solution treatment while the Fe-containing phase, Al8Si6Mg3Fe, remained partially in the microstructure. The Ti, V and Zr containing phases, Al13Si2Ti3Zr and Al3Si26FeTiV10, present in as-cast state, were partially dissolved during solution treatment, reducing their size by 10 - 48%. The studied alloy reached the maximum ultimate tensile strength of 335 MPa and yield stress of 303 MPa for two-step solutionizing with a total time of 4.5 h. It is concluded that the two-step solution treatment resulted in higher tensile properties than the single-step process.

Since dewatering is a costly process, removal of moisture from relatively fine size lignites is an important industrial problem. As the lignite gets finer, the presence of micropores and relatively low hydrophobic nature of lignite lead to trapping of large quantities of water in the coal matrix. Lignites used in power stations need to be dried to a certain degree of humidity before it is transferred to the combustion chamber. It is generally wise to dewater coal as much as possible by physical means before it is dried. However, dewatering cost in some cases may be prohibitive. Thus, sometimes removal of even little percent moisture may be of great help in such operations. Surfactants have been used to increase the efficiency of coal dewatering. It is crucial to select appropriate type and amount of surfactants in order to get higher efficiency. Since the hydrophobic characteristic of coals increases with increasing the coal rank, dewatering of bituminous and anthracite can be accomplished using low HLB surfactants (Oily), however, these surfactants are not efficient in the case of low rank coals like lignites and brown coals. It is suggested that adsorption of low HLB surfactants on high rank coals is governed by Acid-Base interactions rather than electrostatic and van der Waals forces. Since this characteristic in lignites is not strong enough, low HLB surfactants could not be effectively adsorbed on low rank coals to make surface more hydrophobic. In this paper, a special set-up has been designed to study the effect of high HLB surfactants on dewatering of fine lignite particles. It is shown that high HLB surfactants function more efficiently on low rank coals than low HLB ones.

"Oxygenated metabolites of arachidonic acid (MJ are produced by the alveolar macrophage (AM) and have been shown to mediate inflammatory reactions. We therefore assessed the production of eicosanoids by AM harvested from the lungs of rats ex· posed to a bituminous coal dust for 2 wk in an inhalation chamber in order to determine if AA metabolism was altered in a manner that may promote an inflammatory response in the lung. Exposure to coal dust resulted in a 66% increase in the number of AM harvested, an increase in thromboxane A2 (TxA;i) and leukotriene 84 (LTB,j) production to 222% and 181% of control values, respectively, and a decrease in prostaglandin E2 (PGE:i) production to '62% of control values. In AM harvested from rats allowed to breath clean air for 2 wk following coal dust exposure, PGE2 production returned to control levels but TxA2 and LTB4 production remained elevated. The TxA2 synthesis inhibitor UK 38,485 reduced TxA2 production in dust-exposed AM both immediately and 2 wk following exposure. Thus, exposure of rats to coal dust significantly alters the metabolism of AA in AM, with potentially important aspects of AA metabolism remaining altered even after a 2-wk recovery period. Based on the established role of eicosanoids in inflammatory and fibrotic processes, these results suggest that the alteration of AM eicosanoid production as a result of the inhalation of coal mine dust may be an important factor in the pathophysiology of coal workers' pneumoconiosis.The authors are grateful to Joan Greenwood and Barbara Scheetz for their excellent technical assistance and to Brenda Pavone for the preparation of the manuscript. This defensive reaction involves phagocytosis, lysosomal enzyme release, and the generation of reactive oxygen species by the AM (Snella, 1986; Rich et al., 1987). A number of agents, including phorbol esters, zymosan, adenosine diphosphate, organic hydroperoxides, and calcium ionophore, have been shown to activate the AM in vitro (Badger, 1986; Marshall and Lands, 1986; Snella, 1986). The AM response to these activators appears to be mediated in part by the oxygenated metabolites of arachidonic acid (AA) (Bertram et al., 1988; Demers et al., 1987; Mcleish et al., 1987).The AM may metabolize AA through cyclooxygenase- and lipoxygenase- catalyzed pathways to produce a variety of eicosanoids including prostaglandin (PG) E2, thromboxane (Tx) A2, leukotriene (LT) B4, LTC4, LTD4, and several hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid derivatives (HETEs) (Willis, 1970; Camp et al., 1983; Poubelle et al., 1986). The production of these eicosanoids may enhance the. defensive ability of the challenged lung since they stimulate chemotactic cell recruitment to the site of invasion, enhance extravasation of circulating immune cells, and promote local vasodilatation. However, continued stimulation of the AM population, with the consequent production of proinflammatory eicosanoids, may ultimately enhance the disease process by contributing to chronic bronchoconstriction, fibrosis, and the persistent release of toxic oxygen species."

"The present work, likewise, deals with grain refinement of medium carbon steel AISI 1045 having different initial microstructure resulting from thermal and/or thermomechanical treatment (TM) applied prior severe plastic deformation. In case of TM treated steel, structure refinement was conducted in two steps. Preliminary structure refinement has been achieved due to multistep open die forging process which provided total strain Eef ~ 3. Uniform and fine recrystallized ferrite structure with grain size of the order of 2-5 µm and with nest-like pearlite colonies was obtained. The further grain refinement of steel samples having different initial structure was accomplished during warm Equal Channel Angular Pressing (ECAP) at 400°C. The microstructure development was analyzed in dependence of effective strain introduced ( Eef ~ 2.5 - 4). Employment of this processing route resulted in extensive deformation of ferrite grains where mixture of subgrains and ultrafine grain was found regardless the preliminary treatment of steel. As straining increases the dynamic polygonization and recrystallization became active to form mixture of polygonized subgrains and submicrocrystalline grains having high angle boundaries. The intensive straining and moderate ECAP temperature caused the partial cementite lamellae fragmentation and spheroidization as straining increased. The lamellae cementite spheroidization was more extensive in TM treated steel samples. The deformation behavior of for both steel structural state confirm the strength increase; however the work hardening behavior was modified with respect to initial structure of steel prior SPD processing.IntroductionIn the last years, ultrafine grained materials have attracted considerable research interest because they tend to possess high strength without sacrificing toughness and ductility. Microstructural refinement of steel is usually achieved by alloying and/or by thermomechanical treatment process, which modifies phase transformation. Recently, advancement of severe plastic deformation (SPD) techniques provides another efficient access for grain refinement of metals and alloys. The fabrication of bulk materials with ultrafine grain sizes has attracted a great deal of attention over the past two decades because of the materials' enhanced properties [ 1, 2]. "Eight typical metallurgical byproducts containing iron were selected based on the effect of the chemical composition, particle size, additives on the burnout degree of pulverized coal. Effect of three typical byproducts including fine iron ore, BOF dust and BOF sludge on combustion reactivity and combustion efficiency were investigated using TG-DSC method. The results indicated that the three additives have obvious catalytic effects on pulverized coal. By comparison, the relative active sequence of byproducts to the catalytic combustion can be described as follows: BOF dust>BOF sludge>fine iron ore. Moreover, adding BOF dust as component of additives also shows significant catalytic effects on combustion efficiency during rapid heating process.IntroductionChina is the largest producer in the world with an annual output reaching over 6 billion tons. Solid wastes arising from iron and steel making increases the environment pressure in recently years. For instance, annual output of dust during the production of iron and steel making in China reach up to 5 million tons, which is close to 8%~15% of the amount of steel [1]. Another characteristic of these byproducts is they are finer particle which are just harder to deal with. Since some of solid wastes, including dusts, scales, and sludge, usually contain high iron content, sintering plants have traditionally been used to recycle byproducts in integrated steel plants in China. However these byproducts also have noticeable effects on sinter quality, sinter strength and productivity and, therefore, waste recycling is limited depending on the analysis of the waste materials [2]. Another method which is pre-treatment of byproducts in pelletizing process, increases of energy consumption and production cost. In addition, metallurgical byproducts often contain heavy metals and alkalis. For these reasons, recycling rate of the byproducts in China is very low. Therefore, how to recycle the byproducts in iron and steel making process is an important subject."

In this study, effect of rolling and coiling temperature in thermo mechanical controlled process (TMCP), on the microstructure and mechanical properties of dual phase (DP) steel according to martensite volume fraction (MVF) rate was investigated. By using various finishing mill exit temperature and cooling conditions that is controlled laminar cooling system, the microstructural evolution of coil improves the mechanical properties with lower costs and higher productivities, in comparison to the heat treatment after rolling. The main part of the paper contains the result of tensile, yield and microstructure properties of DP600 steel produced on hot strip rolling plant and run- out table line. The results show that a higher MVF and an increasing cooling rate after the last deformation raised strength of the DP600 steel. The yield strength and ultimate tensile strength increase by decreasing coiling temperature.

Lift height, overall heap height and climate all play an important role in determining precious metals leaching rates, recoveries, operating costs and capital cost requirements for heap leaching operations. The effects of these factors are not easy to predict from testwork, and this can result in unexpected delays in metal production, lower recoveries than expected and higher capital and operating costs than necessary. This paper investigates the economic impact of lift height, overall heap height and climate on heap leaching and provides criteria to assist in the design and operation of leaching facilities. Descriptions of three heap leach operations in the western USA are provided to support the discussions and conclusions.

Although surfactants have proven to increase metal extraction by improving solution flow in porous media, these reagents have not been widely adopted in heap leaching operations because of potential incompatibilities with downstream processes that are subject to surface properties. The BASF leaching aid, LixTRA 118, was previously found to have no significant effect on post-leach operations. This study evaluated its performance in ores of different particle size distributions and the impact on acid consumption and metal recovery. Column leach studies, carried out on a copper oxide ore and mixed oxide–sulfide ore, showed that the effect of LixTRA 118 was more pronounced in ores with wider particle size distributions than in those with more uniformly sized particles. Solution percolation rates increased by up to 18% in the presence of leaching aid, and increased copper recovery and acid consumption. Improved wetting facilitated the kinetics of acid diffusion at macroand micropore level. There was no significant effect on iron recovery

The paper reports results on sinterability of iron ores from the mines of Tata Steel Limited. The objective was to improve tumbler index (TI) of sinter and its reduction parameters, reduction degradation index (RDI) and reducibility (RI) while maintaining strand productivity same or to improve. Pot sintering experiments were carried out with Joda and Noamundi mines having LOI 3.8% and 2.9% respectively. Sinter basicity (CaO/SiO2) was varied in the 2.1 to 2.5 range and its MgO content was kept in the 1.4% to 1.8% range according to the blast furnace requirement. The ignition condition and vacuum was maintained according to the plant practice. The effect of variables namely, granulometric composition of ores vis-à-vis that of sinter mix, bed height, solid fuel, moisture content of green mix on the sintering indices was studied. The productivity with Noamundi ore (26 %+6.3 mm) was lower than that with Joda ore (45% +6.3 mm) at 4% coke in the mix and sinter basicity (CaO/SiO2) 2.1. However, with 4% coke (ash 22%) the RDI value was significantly high in case of Noamundi Ore, which decreased significantly to 29% with 5% coke. The size parameter of ore fines and its LOI content do influence the sintering speed and the sinter properties significantly. At 2.1 basicity ratio, the sinter with the Joda ore having coarsergranulometry had highest TI (=70.2%). The RDI (27%) in this case was inferior to that (23.2%) when Joda ores with finer size was sintered. Better RDI with finer sized ore could be attributed to better assimilation of CaO/ MgO with more balanced and uniformly distributed hematite minerals. The size parameter has been inter-influenced by the coke requirement. With the lower mean sized Joda ore the sinter RDI decreased significantly to 23% and the productivity improved to 42.9 T/(sq m*d) when the coke in the mix increased from 4% to 5%. An attempt to reduce the coke in the mix from 5% to 4% with respect to both the ores was not successful as it resulted higher RDI and lower strand productivity. The present study has revealed that sinter RDI improves (decreases) with decrease in the sintering time, while such correlation was absent between TI of sinter and speed of sintering. Corollary to this observation, one can take advantage of other stronger parameters to increase the sintering speed (and hence sinter productivity) without affecting the sinter strength. In the present study higher FeO sinters has displayed excellent RDI, however cold strength of sinter was not correlated with its FeO content. THE behavior of steel after overstrain and at moderate temperatures is fairly well known. It has been made the subject of much investigation, and our knowledge is clear and definite on many points. The ultimate raising of the elastic limit, after moderate overstrain, and the consequent lowering of the ductility, seem to be well established. It is also well understood that the immediate effect of overstrain is to lower the elastic limit, possibly to zero, but that if not interfered with, this limit will subsequently rise higher than before. The "tests after moderate temperature," reported in this paper, were undertaken to verify the above statements for the particular steel under investigation, and also to determine, if possible, the total time required for complete recovery from this state of overstrain. The behavior of overstrained steel at temperatures at or below 32° F. is not so well known. Tests made by Prof E. G. Coker, at McGill University,' show that steel, overstrained and subjected to cold, will remain in a state of overstrain for an indefinite period. I am not aware of any other published results of tests along this particular line. The effect of time and temperature on the recovery of steel from overstrain was made in 1902-3 the subject of sortie investigation in the laboratories of the College of Civil Engineering of Cornell University. A general plan was outlined in connection with the regular courses of instruction in testing of materials; but the press of routine work and the demands of the schedules on the time of the students were so great as to presage long delay in the completion of the work. Application of Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) is one of the main solutions to achieve a safe and high-performance method of construction in hard rock and soft ground tunneling. In order to adequately assess the progress and potential impacts of the tunneling operations with the TBM, it is required to record a series of data during the tunneling and process of the data to evaluate the TBM performance. Applying the right machine parameters during the excavation not only delivers an optimum penetration rate, but also prevents extra downtime due to over excavation or wear of cutting tools. Grinding efficiency in a vertical stirred mill is affected by a wide range of process and mill configuration variables. Of these, the media fill, size, and intrinsic density have a significant effect on power draw and grinding performance. Media-related factors that influence grinding performance include, e.g.,a higher media filling providing additional particle breakage sites, or a lower bead density decreasing the running torque at a given media filling. It has been estimated that the grinding media can cause up to a 30% change in the specific energy required to grind. FLSmidth has generally recommended that the intrinsic density (specific gravity) of the grinding media be more than triple the slurry density. This density difference helps to ensure that sufficient stress intensity is generated in the mill to provide particle breakage. It also reduces the chance of media ?float? if there is a spike in either slurry density or slurry flow rate. The VXPmills have historically operated at slurry density values between 1.2 and 1.5 kg/L, which translates to nominal bead intrinsic density range between 3.6 and 4.5 kg/L. The current trend towards regrinding bulk flotation concentrates to even finer sizes, to improve recoveries of fine grained minerals, has provided motivation to consider closed-circuit operation of stirred media mills. The slurry density in this application is typically higher than in open-circuit operation due to the higher percent solids in cyclone underflows. An additional effect is that closed-circuit operation increases the potential for media float due to higher flow rates as slurry is recycled to the mill. The normal progression in extending the operating range of existing equipment is to carry out laboratory testing before pilot-scale and plant-scale trials. The results presented in this paper examine the media density to slurry density ratio and its effect on grinding performance.
