In the present study the effect of using different grinding media, viz, ceramic balls, forged steel balls, 15% Cr steel balls, stainless steel and mixture of stainless steel and 15% Cr steel balls (50:50) on the flotation performance of a Platinum Group Mineral (PGM) UG2 ore was investigated. Test work was conducted using a laboratory scale horizontal tumbling mill and a batch flotation cell. Power draw to achieve a specific P80 was determined for each media type. Changes in flotation behaviour were evaluated in terms of particle size distribution, water recovery, solid recovery and valuable mineral recovery. pH, Eh and DO levels were also measured. Grinding products of five different media produced similar solids and water recovery, which is indicative of the froth characteristics, but the grades and recoveries of PGE and chromite were different. The product obtained when using ceramic media showed the best flotation performance, producing the highest PGE recovery and the lowest Cr2O3 recovery. The products obtained when using stainless steel balls (SS) produced the lowest PGE recovery and highest Cr2O3 grade and recovery. The paper proposes possible reasons to explain these observations which may have significant importance for the operation of a PGM concentrator.

Stone coal is a unique vanadium-bearing resource in China. Many techniques, such as salt roasting-water leaching, blank roasting-acid leaching, direct acid leaching etc. have been developed for vanadium extraction from stone coal. The vanadium leaching rate can reach 74.9% for stone coal from Jiangxi, but only about 27% of vanadium is leached for Hubei ore by applying salt roasting-water leaching technique. This paper investigats the vanadium occurrence in stone coal by microscope observation and electron probe, and compares the minerals components of stone coal from Jiangxi and Hubei. Although most vanadium exist as an isomorphism by replacing Al(III) from dioctahedral structure in mica group minerals in stone coal from two regions, the free vanadium is remarkably abundant in Jiangxi stone coal than in Hubei stone coal, which results the fact that vandium is relatively readily extracted from former. Moreover, the content of calcite in Hubei stone coal is much higher than that in Jiangxi stone coal. Calcium can react with V2O5 to form water insoluble calcium vanadates during roasting and this may be the reasone why the water leaching rate of vanadium is low for Hubei ore. Acid leaching is more beneficial to the vanadium leaching but other extra methods, such as adding aid-leaching agent and/or increasing acid concentration is need for the ore where vanadium is embeded firmly. This study can effectively guide the selection of vanadium extraction techniques for stone coal from different regions.

Among the different sources of uncertainty in pile bearing capacity prediction including inherent heterogeneity, measurement and model uncertainties, the inherent heterogeneity of soil properties is of particular interest and is considered in this study. Cone tip resistance data are utilized to calculate pile bearing capacity by considering vertical soil variability. In this regard, cone tip resistance component of CPT data is assumed as a random parameter. Realizations of this parameter are achieved with the aid of local average subdivisions and random field theories. Monte Carlo simulation is used to generate different realizations of CPT or CPT-u data. Pile bearing capacity was then calculated by the use of direct method. Pile bearing capacity are predicted for a project in south of Iran using this method and probability density function for the total bearing capacity of pile is plotted. Coefficient of variation of 33% for ultimate bearing capacity shows the variability of bearing capacity due to variation of soil strength in depth. Cumulative probability chart for the ultimate bearing capacity are plotted as an efficient tool for estimating ultimate bearing capacity of piles with different desired confidence levels for vertically variable soil strength properties. Significant difference between mean value of pile bearing capacity (18 MN) and limit with 95% confidence level (8 MN) emphasizes the importance of considering soil variability.

Synthetic water with a calcium concentration of 80 ppm and 500 ppm was prepared and the flotation results obtained compared to a simple electrolyte in order to determine the effect water quality has on pentlandite and pyroxene surface alteration and, ultimately, floatability. During the study, the possible effect of interactions between the minerals investigated and Ca2+ ions in the presence of sodium isobutyl xanthate was studied at pH 6 and pH 9 by means of zeta potential determinations, microflotation tests and ToF-SIMS analysis. The results obtained have demonstrated that water quality does play a significant role in flotation recovery at the experimental conditions used.

"The Merensky Reef is a platinum group minerals (PGM) bearing reef in the Bushveld Igneous Complex in South Africa. The reef has been treated by bulk PGM and sulphide flotation with the aim of maximisingthe valuable minerals recovery and gangue minerals rejection.Synthetic water with a calcium concentration of 80 ppm and 500 ppm was prepared and the flotation results obtained were compared to a simple electrolyte in order to determine the effect water quality has on pentlandite and pyroxene surface alteration and, ultimately, floatability. The 2-mm butt joints of ZE41A-T5 sand castings were laser welded using 1.6 mm EZ33A-T5 filler wire and a continuous wave Nd:YAG system at a power of 4 kW, surface defocusing and various welding speeds, Compared with the base metal, the fusion zone showed significant grain refinement due to high cooling rate, No grain coarsening was observed in the heat affected zone (HAZ). The porosity area percentage and total solidification crack length in the fusion zone (FZ) were reduced as the welding speed increased from 4 to 7 m/min, Fusion zone area, total penetration depth, and weld width decreased with increased welding speed, The hardness in the FZ was similar to or higher than the base metal after a natural aging of about one year, but there was a drop in the hardness of the HAZ, The HAZ width decreased with increasing the welding speed, Tensile test showed that a joint efficiency of approximately 75 ? 90 % was obtained.

"Excessive wear rates on railway wheels can result in rolling-stock derailments. If wear is detected early the possible derailments can be prevented by prematurely replacing wheelsets, although the inventory cost and maintenance downtime remain a challenge. In the current study, wheels were introduced and monitored in-service for two years to investigate the cause of excessive wear rates. The wear rates and stresses were calculated for the wheels suitable for a maximum load of 26 t per axle. Microstructural and mechanical properties were analysed. As expected, the general microstructure of all the wheels tested was pearlitic. Although all the wheels complied with the tensile strength requirements, stress calculations confirmed material distortion on excessively worn wheels whereas trial wheels revealed yield strength exceeding the yield criterion. High wear rates observed on the wheels were a result of low yield strength relative to the load per axle. The typical wear mechanism found was due to a combination of rolling contact fatigue and abrasive brake wear. Despite compliance of the wheels with existing requirements regarding material and mechanical properties (hardness, ultimate tensile strength), it is recommended that the yield strength must also be taken into consideration as a critical parameter.IntroductionRailway wheels are used to support the wagon mass and guide the wagon along the tracks (Park, 1974). The wheels and rails must be able to tolerate the applied tangential forces in order to effect wagon dynamic performance and reduce material deformation (Ghidini et al., 1994; RSE_TE_SPC_0045, 2011; AAR M107/M 208 Specification, 2011. Over the past ten years, the South African coal wagon maintenance depot has experienced excessive hollow wheel wear rates on the heavy haul line wheels. The maximum load of Jumbo wagons on the coal line is 104 t, or 26 t per axle. Although the maintenance intervention cycle for wheelsets was two years, between February 2011 and August 2012 some wheels experienced excessive hollow wear. Hollow wear is regarded as wear exceeding 2 mm on the central portion of the wheel tread (RSE_TE_SPC_0045, 2011). This happened despite the fact that these wheels were manufactured and certified according to the requirements of AAR M107/208 standard for carbon steel wheels (AAR M107/M 208 Specification,. 2011) and the local wheel RS/ME/SP 021 standard specification (RS / ME / SP / 021 REV 5 (2013). The AAR standard only specifies a minimum hardness as a required mechanical property and the local standard specifies hardness and minimum tensile strength only. In general, an increase in hardness will improve the rolling/sliding wear resistance of steel. This relationship of hardness and wear resistance was found to be true only in a situation where solid and similar alloys are in contact (Singh, Khatirkar and Sapate, 2015). The sliding wear resistance of a material is usually estimated using Archard’s equation (Liu and Li, 2001)."

"The presence of zinc in cyanide solutions is generally thought to not have an adverse effect on precious metal recovery or recovery rate by heap leach processing. However, analytical interferences of zinc in solution can cause problems in accurately determining and controlling cyanide concentration in the leach solution, leading to increased cyanide consumption. Analytical methods and the chemistry of cyanide in the presence of zinc are reviewed. The effects of solution pH and zinc concentration on the free cyanide determination were evaluated in detail. Use of the standard silver nitrate titration and a modified titration method for controlling cyanide concentration during heap leaching were investigated experimentally. The practical implications of cyanide heap leaching in the presence of cyanide soluble zinc minerals are discussed.IntroductionThe presence of zinc in precious metal cyanidation circuits is not uncommon. Zinc can be introduced into cyanide leach solutions through dissolution of various zinc minerals1>, or through the use of a Merrill Crowe (zinc precipitation) circuit. Zinc minerals typically occur infrequently and in low concentration in gold ores, but are more abundant in silver ores. Merrill Crowe systems are most commonly employed for recovery of precious metals from solution for relatively high silver ores. It is desirable to control the amount of dissolved zinc in a cyanidation circuit for several reasons. Excessive zinc build-up in cyanide leach solution can, under certain circumstances, inhibit precious metal dissolution and adversely affect solution recovery systems. Additionally, high zinc concentrations can lead to excessive in-process cyanide inventories and potentially, to higher cyanide consumption"

"The microstructure of Al-10Si-0.3Mg-0.5Mn alloy with 0.27% Zr and 0.19% V addition was quantitatively analysed and compared to the base material. The addition of Zr and V in the AlSi10Mg alloy exhibit a beneficial effect on the Si modification, resulting in the reduction of the size of eutectic Si particles on both as-cast and T6 conditions. The quantitative image analysis results show that the Zr and V addition and T6 treatment can reduce the size of the intermetallic phases. In addition, the presence of Zr and V is favour to the partial dissolution of the intermetallic phases during the T6 treatment. Different heat treatment procedures were tested to optimize treatment parameters. The mechanical properties of the alloys were evaluated using hardness measurements and tensile tests. The results show that the addition of Zr and V can remarkably improve the mechanical properties on as-cast and T6-treated conditions. The correlation between the microstructure and mechanical properties of the alloys is discussed.INTRODUCTION Al-Si-Mg foundry alloys have been widely used in automotive and aerospace industries due to their high strength-to-weight ratio, heat-treatable capability and excellent castability. The alloying elements such as Cu, Mn, Fe are traditionally added into Al-Si-Mg alloys to improve their mechanical properties (Mohamed, Samuel, Samuel & Doty, 2009). In recent years, the attention has been paid to the effect of the transition elements such as Zr, V, Ti, etc, as minor alloying additives, on the properties of aluminum alloys (Elhadari, Patel, Chen, & Kasprzak, 2011; Kasprzak, Amirkhiz & Niewczas, 2014; Shaha, Czerwinski, Kasprzak, Friedman & Chen, 2015; Shaha, Czerwinski, Kasprzak & Chen, 2014; Mahmudi, Sepehrband, Ghasemi & 2006; Meng, Cui, Zhao & Zuo, 2013). Kasprzak et al., (2014) and Shaha et al., (2015) reported that additions of Zr, V, and Ti in Al-Si-Cu-Mg cast alloys can improve the alloy mechanical properties at high temperature by forming stable intermetallics and precipitates on as-cast and heat treatment conditions. On the other hand, the mechanical properties of near-eutectic and eutectic Al–Si cast alloys depend not only on the chemical composition but also, even more importantly, on microstructural features such as the morphology and size of eutectic silicon and intermetallic particles, which are present on both as-cast and heat treatment conditions (Mohamed et al., 2009). However, there is rather limited information on the effect of Zr and V on the microstructure features and mechanical properties of near-eutectic Al-Si-Mg cast alloys."

Tailing slurry is usually abrasive and possesses high viscosity. This paper examines the existing iron ore beneficiation process and focuses on some of the key environmental issues related to the disposal of tailings. It identifies that almost 32% of the iron ore extracted ends up as tailings and they are usually disposed in slurry form in tailing ponds. By the year 2000, 27 Mt of iron ore tailings were generated in India, which has become one of the biggest waste handling problems to the industry. Characteristics of the tailings vary widely. So the physical nature of tailings cannot be considered separately in isolation without considering the mill effluent from the beneficiation plant. In the present investigation, studies were carried out in three iron ore mines in India to evaluate the characteristics of tailings from the beneficiation plant. The tailing samples were collected from different locations during a time period of one year and analyzed. The results will be discussed and the characteristics of the tailings have been evaluated. The disposal system of tailings at the three mines was evaluated. The research on the settling characteristics of tailings indicates that the area provided in the existing tailing ponds in India is much more than that of the experimental results. This paper concludes that sedimentation tests are essential to design appropriate tailings pond with respect to size. In the proposed scheme it is suggested that an additional unit process, i.e. sedimentation tank be added to the process before the disposal of tailings to the tailing pond.

Effective domaining is fundamental to geostatistical modelling for grade control. Through analysis of lithological, structural and alteration logging data, effective groupings (domains) can be identified and employed for estimation or simulation purposes.The poor definition of domains can adversely affect the grade control model resulting in a misinterpretation of the optimal ore-waste boundary and ultimately reduces the quality of recovered ore. The implementation of an appropriate domaining strategy is therefore expected to improve recovery and reconciliation.A thorough understanding of the geology of the deposit and adequate sample data is required for selecting domains. For new deposits, a resource drill database and resource model may be the only information available. Where extension to a previous operation is taking place, historic grade control, mapping and exposed geology may be used to improve domain selection. Preconceptions about domains, should they exist, need to be re-evaluated and tested to ensure they are fit for the purposes of grade control.While mining progresses, the domain model is re-evaluated to ensure that the previous interpretation is still suitable for the present configuration and geology. The grade control process, being iterative, lends itself to regular review and continuous improvement as further data is collected during the grade control cycle. Regular updates to the geology model, mapping, geostatistical data analysis and review of variography will provide indications of a changing domaining environment.Narrow vein gold deposits, which may have several factors influencing mineralisation, present considerable domaining challenges. The interest of industry, in particular future mining, is pointing towards the use of novel visualisation systems to improve the operational efficiency of user interfaces. While the technologies used to enhance operators’ experience are advancing, the implementation of novel visualisation paradigms within mining operations is trailing behind other industries, particularly health and aviation. In this work, we present a number of initiatives and use cases of immersive virtual and augmented reality systems that can fit within the mining context. These ideas represent a step towards new platforms that might increase the efficiency and safety of mining operations through applications such as 3D panoramic video monitoring technology with annotated information coming from big data analytics and visual analytics processing engines. However, while the technologies are used in a variety of training settings, their application in the working environment is lagging behind. This paper presents examples of scientific visualisations that could be applied in a mining context to extend the possibilities of operators’ cognitive abilities and working efficiency. In the October 1998 issue of the Holmes Safety Association Bulletin, NIOSH authors Mark Stephenson and Carol Merry wrote the article Hearing loss among miners and measures to protect hearing, which focused on the extensiveness of hearing loss among miners and the use of hearing protection to prevent hearing loss. While the primary importance of engineering controls in preventing hearing loss was discussed, since miners do not generally have control over their work en­vironment or assignments, the article focused on the importance of consis­tent use of hearing protection. In this article, all aspects of a compre­hensive approach to the prevention of hearing loss in miners will be covered. The discussions will do the following: ? describe application of the hierarchy of controls in preventing hear­ing loss in miners, ? give an example for each type of control measure and its impact, ? explain the major provisions, be­yond the hierarchy of controls, of the recent NIOSH document en-titled Criteria for a Recommended Standard: Occupa­tional Noise Exposure, Revised Criteria 1998 relative to a hearing loss prevention program, and ? summarize important points on control of noise exposure for every miner to remember, equipment in most facets of operations. Miners are well aware of noisy areas in or around equipment, icluding extraction machinery such as draglines, power shovels, longwall shearers, and continuous mining machines; powered haulage equipment such as load-haul-dumps, shuttle cars, large trucks, and continuous haulage units; roof bolting machines; jackleg drills and stopers; auxiliary equipment such as compressors, fans, and pumps; size reduction equipment, etc. They are not well aware of the insidious nature of pro­gressive hearing loss, which is per­manent, but they are generally aware of what levels of noise are hazardous and what measures can be taken to reduce their personal noise exposure. Behaviorally, however, there are many reasons why miners choose not to use hearing protection faithfully.

The evaluation of mineral projects involves the identification, mitigation and management of significant uncertainty. Benchmarking is an essential and effective way of increasing confidence and reducing uncertainty associated with input parameters and assumptions. Comprehensive and detailed benchmarking will ensure ?best practice? technologies, methods and systems have been considered and that the appropriate practices can be identified and incorporated into the project. In conjunction with the involvement of experienced industry practitioners, benchmarking is best employed throughout project evaluation to enable early identification of ?errors?, producing more accurate and predictable outcomes. Considerable time and effort is required to gather data and information, which should be benchmarked by the project evaluation team. There is a history of mining projects underperforming, on production, on costs and on return to the investors. The quality of mine plans and feasibility studies, and the quality of the input data is being questioned in many ways. Benchmarking assists sound project evaluation practices, by providing a database of actual results, to validate project inputs and outcomes, ensuring they are realistic and achievable. Benchmarking also provides unbiased, statistical support as the basis for sound investment decision making and ensures well considered decisions are made resulting in a more efficient study process. The evaluation of the quality of projects which are the subject of transactions also benefits from the use of real data obtained from a benchmarking database. Vendors are quick to highlight the benefits of their projects, and conceal the flaws, inflating the value. Buyers will want to quantify the potential of a project through the due diligence process relying on actual results from benchmarking. For the reasons broadly outlined above, benchmarking should be considered as an essential component of effective Project Evaluation.

An attempt to produce fuel from biomass waste by hydrothermal treatment has been made with expectation to effectively utilize a renewable source of energy and an unexploited energy resource. In this paper, we have used empty fruit bunch (EFB) that is a residue after recovery of crude palm oil from palm oil trees in a plantation in a tropic country. A hydrothermal treatment was conducted using a 500 mL autoclave, with alkali (K2CO3) catalyst. EFB was decomposed more by alkali catalyst of lower alkali content and rather polymerized in higher catalytic region. The functional group composition of the solid phase oil is similar independent of alkali content, however its burning characteristic became more incombustible with increasing alkali content.

The influence of semicharcoal substitution for coke breeze on sintering performance was investigated by pot-grate sintering test. At a fixed fuel ratio, sinter productivity and strength decreased with the substitution increasing from 0 to 100% due to better combustibility. To enhance the utilization efficiency of 100% semicharcoal, sintering parameters (moisture and suction pressure) was adjusted. With the moisture increasing, sinter performance of 100% semicharcoal increased because of the suppression of semicharcoal incomplete combustion. As the moisture further increasing to 9.0%, sinter quality gave rise to a decrease trend. The results also showed that the increase of suction pressure was benefit for the increase of heat transfer rate, leading to the improvement of heat utilization energy. Measures to enhance magnetite oxidation during sintering are discussed based on current understanding of the fundamentals that control the sintering process.

Installation of flotation equipment is a lengthy and intricate process involving conceptual design, detailed design and layout, equipment installation, equipment commissioning and handover prior to the plant commencing operation. During these steps, mistakes are often made that lead to increased costs and/or schedule delays in bringing the new equipment online.This paper presents a series of recommendations for the installation and commissioning of flotation equipment to minimise mistakes and ensure that plant production commences efficiently with a minimum of resources. The advice herein is based on lessons learnt from recent flotation equipment commissioning. Management of solid mine wastes, particularly waste rock, requires careful planning to reduce the likelihood of sulfide oxidation, and generation of acid rock drainage (ARD). Waste management strategies must focus on obtaining a thorough understanding of the environmental characteristics of future waste rock materials. In this study, a waste management strategy for characterising underground waste rock was developed at a polymetallic underground mine in western Tasmania to determine which materials were appropriate for surficial placement. The criteria for surficial placement set by the regulator were that materials had to be non-acid forming and non-metalliferous. A range of cost-effective field-based tools, mineralogical assessments and mineral chemistry techniques were used on a suite of representative drill core material to determine an appropriate waste management strategy. Ultimately, a modified geochemistry–mineralogy–texture–geometallurgy (GMTG) approach was designed, whereby geoenvironmental focused logging and simple prescreening tools such as paste pH and sulfur analyses were used at stage-one; routine acid base accounting and leachate tests at stage-two; and validation tools including X-ray diffractometry and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICPMS) at stage-three. This approach should be considered for other mine sites at early and operational life-of-mine stages with similar deposit characteristics, to ensure correct screening and placement of potentially hazardous waste materials in suitable above-ground waste repositories or mined-out mine sections.CITATION:Parbhakar-Fox, A and Lottermoser, B G, 2017. Stainless steel exposed to wet environments at ambient temperature is subject to the formation of a surface biofilm. Depending upon the prevailing environmental conditions (dissolved oxygen, pH, Eh, concentration of cationic/anionic species), the biofilm may stimulate corrosion through formation of differential aeration zones and concentration cells. Corrosion significantly impacts the United States economy, since on a yearly basis, corrosion induced losses are estimated to be over $200 billion. A large portion of this corrosion is imputable to bacterial activity, and basic information is needed for a better understanding and control of the biocorrosion phenomenon. The present study has investigated the influence of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans in the corrosion of American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) 304, 316 and 416 stainless steel samples. The formation of biofilm and microstructural changes on the surface of stainless steel samples and their weldments were assessed by microscopic examination, and the changes in the mechanical properties by stress-strain measurements. The significance of the results will be discussed.
