Acidic mine waters containing solubilized uranium have been observed in many uranium and some copper mines. In every case, the sulphide and iron oxidizing bacterium, Thiobacillus ferrooxidans, was also present. This bacterium provides the ferric iron required to oxidize u+4, both by oxidizing available ferrous iron and by oxidizing pyrite or other available sulphide minerals. This latter oxidation also provides sulphuric acid and may increase extraction by exposing more uranium. The enhancement of bacterial activity and the results of some field tests are discussed.

To address these integration challenges and bridge the industry’s knowledge gap, the concept of a digital twin offers a holistic solution (Ahn, 2021; Nagovitsyn and Stepacheva, 2021).

Project scheduling is a deterministic technique utilizing single estimates of activity durations. In reality, activity durations are stochastic and can be better represented by probability distributions. This paper describes the development and utilization of a project scheduling simulation which combines analytical scheduling with stochastic activity durations. The purpose is to provide a method to analyze the sequencing of mining production processes and predict the effect of any planned changes. The simulation is demonstrated through realistic examples, such as longwall face-to-face transfer sequencing and the effect of varying advance rates on longwall development sections. Statistical data, to make more informed production decisions, are generated in the form of project activity/path criticality and project duration distributions.

"In a climate characterised by an ever increasing focus on cost reduction and maximising the utilisation of existing assets and infrastructure, understanding the uncertainty associated with alternative investment and operational choices becomes paramount to minimising the risk of making an ineffective decision. To assist in this process, TSG Consulting has developed an analytic framework to capture the underlying complexity of a mineral supply chain, and then quantify the impact of the uncertainty associated with the key drivers of business productivity. The technical basis of this approach follows three distinct steps: analyse the current system and identify the major factors that drive value build detailed models that can measure the response of the system to potential changes in the factors identified quantify the sensitivity of financial and capacity forecasts to these factors.Each of the above steps draws on a different area from the field of applied analytics, namely: data analytics dynamic modelling and designed experimentation meta-modelling and optimisation.Following the three-step approach described above ensures a rigorous modelling and analysis process is executed to support strategic mine planning decisions. The approach is equally applicable to the analysis of fully integrated system supply chains (pit-to-port), the evaluation of incremental capital investments to targeted areas of a supply chain, or when considering revisions to the operating philosophy of a system in the short term. The basis of each of the three analytic steps is explored in detail in this paper. In the present study, 1.1 volume percent of nano size copper was incorporated into pure tin using hybrid microwave sintering assisted powder metallurgy route. Microwave sintered samples were extruded both at room temperature and at 230 °C. Microstructural characterization studies were conducted on the extruded samples to investigate the distribution characteristics of secondary phase and grain morphology. Room temperature tensile test results revealed that hot extruded Sn-Cu samples exhibited higher strengths (~ 41%, in case of 0.2% yield strength and ~ 38%, in case of ultimate tensile strength) and ductility (~ 15%) when compared to room temperature extruded samples. On the contrary, the tensile properties of pure tin remained independent of extrusion temperature. An attempt is made in this study to correlate the effect of extrusion temperature on the microstructural evolution and tensile properties of Sn-Cu solder.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a ventilation assessment for a recently established underground room-and-pillar stone mine implementing split-mine ventilation. The primary objective was to examine the impact of the length of the in-place stone stoppings on face ventilation efficiency. These stone stoppings serve to separate the intake and exhaust entries and align with the mining direction. To achieve this, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling was utilized. The appropriate turbulence model was selected, and a mesh convergence analysis was conducted for the CFD model. Following that, the CFD model was validated using the conducted ventilation surveys. Two configurations of in-place stone stoppings, designated as Layout-I and Layout-II, were simulated using the validated CFD models. Layout-I featured a shorter in-place stone stopping, while Layout-II had a longer one. The results obtained from the CFD models demonstrated that the increased length of the in-place stone stopping in Layout-II resulted in a notable enhancement in ventilation efficiency at the advanced faces (last stopping), elevating it from 4% in Layout-I to 8.4% in Layout-II. However, no significant impact of the in-place stopping layouts was observed at other faces. In general, Layout-II exhibited a greater circulation of air at the outby stoppings.

ILZRO sights are locked securely on the targets of the expanded applications and ever-improving quality in the major market for zinc-coated steel. A wide range of ILZRO-sponsored research projects examine issues of formability, paintability, and corrosion resistance for traditional hot-dip galvanising, electrogalvanising, and ILZRO's own proprietary zinc coating, Galfan. Recent research has focussed on the on the interaction between Galfan and different substrate steels to determine optimum combinations for different applications. ILZRO enjoys an evolving role in providing the connection between research laboratories and marketing divisions through supporting research and services for the Galfan Technical Resource Centreò(GTRC) and the recently formed North American Galfan Development Authority (NAGDA). GTRC has just produced a new problem-solving manual that provides a comprehensive source of hands-on solutions for the many Galfan licensees throughout the world, and should contribute substantially to the reputation of Galfan as a consistently top-quality steel-coating product. Meanwhile, NAGDA is advancing the market with new advertising for Galfan based on superior corrosion-resistant qualities proven through ILZRO-sponsored research. Practical manufacturing issues remain at the forefront of ILZRO priorities, with research emphasis on cutting and welding zinc-coated steel to provide direct assistance towards improved product quality and a more secure market. Moving to the arena of die casting, when the specifier looks to zinc to fill a design need, ILZRO-sponsored research projects provide comprehensive documentation on metallurgical characteristics for every zinc alloy under almost any imaginable application. On-going ILZRO-sponsored research is integrating this wealth of data with sophisticated computer programs that model die-casting designs with ever-increasing accuracy, as other ILZRO projects lay the market groundwork for zinc in applications ranging from vibration damping to electromagnetic shielding.

Over the last 30 years, a transition away from end-anchored bolts to fully grouted rock bolt systems has occurred in many underground mines. It seems geomechanically intuitive that the success of such bolts, which interfere with rock movements around underground excavations through a variety of complex interactions, is precisely why they remain challenging to instrument and monitor. Whereas measuring the load profile for an end-anchored mechanical bolt is trivial, for a fully grouted system, the load may vary dramatically due to discrete rock movement at cracks and joints. Despite the challenges, measuring the strain (i.e., load) along fully grouted rock bolts remains very appealing, and a lot of valuable research has been conducted using foil resistance strain gauges, particularly in US coal mines (Signer and Jones, 1990). Despite good intentions, more widespread adoption of this instrumentation remains unlikely for the following reasons: (i) The technology is expensive, partly because Intrinsically Safe (IS) requirements limit the number of suppliers and solutions. (ii) The technology is perceived as challenging to successfully implement except by those who are skilled in the art. (iii) The reliability of the technology is questionable in harsh environments. (iv) The technology relies on discrete pairs of strain gauges that may not capture the complete strain distribution along the bolt. No existing alternative technology can offer a solution to all of these limitations. However, in this paper, we introduce results from a new Distributed Optical Sensing technology that promises significant potential. Since the technology is capable of distributed sensing, our results suggest that this new technology can, for the first time, reveal the detailed strain profile along fully grouted rock bolts.

Atualmente, materiais alternativos têm sido pesquisados, sendo os compósitos dematriz poliméricas reforçados com fibras naturais um desses tipos de materiais. Ofato que torna as fibras naturais uma ótima opção são suas vantagens ambientais eseu relativo baixo custo. No caso do eu eucalipto, este também possui um altocultivo no Brasil. Além disso, as fibras naturais apresentam características deinterface com a matriz polimérica que favorecem as propriedades mecânicas pelaestrutura do compósito. Esse presente trabalho analisa as propriedades de tração docompósito de matriz poliéster reforçado com a incorporação de fibras de eucaliptoem 10,20 e 30% em fração volumétrica, que foram preparados alinhando as fibrasnas matrizes e curadas por 24 horas em temperatura ambiente, por volta de 25ºC.Os corpos de prova foram testados numa máquina Instron e os resultadosmostraram um aumento na resistência à tração conforme o aumento do volume defibras incorporadas.

Fibras de rami (Boehmeria nivea) estão entre as lignocelulósicas naturais com potencial para utilização em compósitos poliméricos. O presente trabalho avalia a resistência ao impacto deste tipo de compósito. Corpos de prova normalizados foram confeccionados com percentuais de até 30% em volume de tecido de rami alinhadas ao longo de todo o comprimento. As fibras foram embutidas sob pressão em matriz de resina poliéster do tipo ortoftálica curada à temperatura ambiente por 24 horas. Os corpos de prova foram ensaiados em pêndulo de impacto Izod e as superfícies de fratura analisadas por microscopia eletrônica de varredura, MEV. A resistência ao impacto aumentou exponencialmente com a quantidade relativa de tecido de rami reforçando o compósito. Este desempenho foi associado à dificuldade de ruptura imposta pelas fibras bem como ao tipo de trincas resultantes da interação tecido de rami/matriz de poliéster que ajuda a absorver a energia do impacto.

In pyrometallurgical operations, structural integrity of a high temperature furnace plays a crucial role in the overall safety, profitability and ecological footprint of the plant. Furnace integrity is related to how reliable a furnace is and it can be compromised, for example, by having poor operating and maintenance practices, an inefficient cooling system and flaws in the overall furnace design. These flaws and poor practices might lead to unexpected shutdowns, production losses, increased emissions, or worse. This paper presents the main factors to consider when engineering a furnace and developing its operating practices, while ensuring safe and reliable operations without compromising process efficiency and quality of the final products. In this respect, Outotec’s solutions for the cooling system and for automation systems like PROSCON, Process Advisor, Sentinel and our Smelting Information Management System, are also introduced.

The enterprise wide optimization (EWO) of steelmaking and manufacturing is a multi-level, hierarchical problem which spans higher level corporate planning and scheduling through to the lower level operations of processes that produce and manufacture steel. External and internal system dynamics combined with process unit co-ordination create complex changing circumstances for the enterprise. This paper presents a scoping study as a prelude to enterprise wide considerations at an integrated steelworks to help inform the choice of appropriate model types and optimization techniques. The hierarchical, multi-level structure of the enterprise and the important spatial-temporal scales to consider are defined. Insights into the system were gained by analyzing a large set of dynamic operational data. Over two years of data were subject to both univariate and multivariate analysis with the intent of understanding the complex interrelations of energy flows on site, the inherent system dynamics of the energy network, system operational modes, aspects of planning and scheduling and the coordination between major processing units. This analysis was further used to evaluate the performance of the system in regards to energy utilization and understand the potential economic benefits derived from improved operational decisions.

THOUGH the rapid revival of the copper market in the early twenties solved the most serious of the company's immediate postwar difficulties, a much more fundamental, long-range problem still remained. Mining is not like farming: the earth does not bring forth a new crop of gold, silver, lead, zinc, oil, or copper at every harvest time. Metal taken from the ground does not spring up again from the old roots like perennial flowers in a garden, or find renewal in freshly sown seed. No ore body, whatever its size or richness, is too big or too rich to escape ultimate exhaustion. When the war closed in 1918, Phelps Dodge had been mining copper from Bisbee, Morenci, and Nacozari over periods varying in length from ten to nearly forty years. During much of that time, the company's production had run from fifty million to as high as two hundred million pounds a year. Even the greatest of mines had to respond in time to such a drain. This bulletin is a detailed study of low-temperature, entrained-bed carbonization of a Texas lignite. The lignite studied was from the Sandow strip mine and is representative of the Rockdale formation of the Wilcox formational group. Carbonization was conducted in a continuous entrained-bed reactor at several temperatures in the 8801 to 1,52°C F range, and at air-coal ratios it the 0 to 10.30 scf/lb range (moisture- and ash-free basis). Carbonization rates ranged from 97.1 to 410.0 lb/hr (as-received basis), At the higher air-to-coal ratios employed, all or most of the carbonization heat was provided by internal combustion with air in the reactor. At the lower air-to-coal ratios, parts of the heat for carbonization was supplied externally. It was demonstrated that the entrained-bed carbonization of lignite is a complex reaction and that several variables, of which carbonization temperature, air-to-lignite ratio, and the average size of lignite are important, act together to influence both the carbonization yields and the properties of the resultant products, Process variables established by pant tests were used to design the industrial scale carbonizer operated at Rockdale, Texas, by the Texas Power & Light Company as agents for the Aluminum Company of America. Properties of the carbonization product obtained from the industrial scale reactor were essentially the same as those obtained from the pilot plant reactor operated under the same conditions.

The terms environment and environmental control, when used in today's context, generally imply to the average individual, something to do with pollution and pollution control. These latter terms, likewise, impart visions of fouled air and dirty water attributable largely to the industrial segment of American society. We have been conditioned, by various means, over the past ten years to equate environ¬mental control with pollution control. We have been trained to think of industrial environmental control programs as efforts conceived only to comply with one or more of the recently imposed pollution control regulations. Almost automatically we; approach consideration of environmental control with a degree of pessimism that is we assume that pollution prompted the control program. It is the purpose of this discussion to demonstrate that environmental control. at least as it exists and has existed within the crushed stone industry, involves far more than simply control or reduction of air and water pollution. It involves a dedication to the enhancement of each of the several "mini-environments" which together comprise the total world surrounding any given crushed stone operation. Environmental control, exercised properly, is an optimistic, constructive, forward-looking, enhancing type of activity. It is a function which has been, and should continue to be, willingly and expectantly undertaken by informed management personnel. In short, environmental control. is an activity from which both industry and society can and should benefit.

Multiple seam mining is predominant throughout the central Pennsylvania Appalachian coal fields. Wide ranges in individual seam thickness, coal quality, and overburden characteristics are common throughout the region. On typical mining permits, ranging from 404 x 103 to 2023 x 103 m2 (100 to 500 acres), often as many as eight seams are concurrently mined, with each interburden requiring unique economic and environmental consideration in the mine plan. Specifically, this paper presents several planning tools and operational guidelines developed in response to current regulations for the special handling of potentially acid-forming materials as they are related to development and operation of multiple seam mines.

A formal and explicit yet cost-effective approach is proposed to ensure that decisions made during mine development are optimum (with respect to their ultimate consequences) as well as defensible. This risk management approach is based on probabilistic risk assessment and established decision analysis techniques, and appropriately considers the relationships among various mine development decisions, tradeoffs among consequences, the uncertainty in predicting consequences, and the benefits of flexibility to respond to changed conditions.

The International Seabed Authority and a number of countries have or are in the process of developing environmental impact assessment guidelines and legislation for seafloor mineral development. The formal decision to grant a project an environmental permit is based on an environmental and social impact assessment (ESIA), culminating in an environmental impact statement (EIS). The EIS needs to be supported by sufficient data upon which an assessment of impacts can be made and mitigation measures developed. Given the remote locations of many seafloor prospects, collection of sufficient environmental data to inform an EIS is often a difficult, expensive and lengthy process.

This paper presents an overview of recent developments in the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process to provide the background for a more detailed analysis of environmental and social constraints that the Heavy Mineral Mining industry has encountered over the past decade. Four cases studies are reviewed to provide a context for further analysis and identification of cross cutting environmental and social issues that either resulted in the projects not proceeding, or in the Australian case study, places existing operations under significant pressure from anti-mining lobbyists. The Xolobeni project, from the Eastern Cape in South Africa, is presented as the primary case study because it is recent, topical, and accessible; and raised numerous issues related to mining in a sensitive environment. A proposal to mine an area adjacent to the Okefenokee swamps in 1997 was also met with strong opposition from various environmental groups in Georgia, USA. This case study is briefly reviewed to further understand what ultimately resulted in the project not proceeding. Opposition to mining at North Stradbroke Island is reviewed to identify current issues more applicable to a developed country. A further review of a strategic assessment undertaken at Wavecrest, Eastern Cape, South Africa is provided in support of possible solutions to the challenges identified in the case studies. Important common themes were identified, including in some cases unfortunate timing of the environmental studies, but in all cases opposition was due to ecological sensitivity, landscape quality and sense of place. In one case study limitations to the EIA process included inadequate detail in the specialist investigations and insufficient information on mitigation. In all cases public participation was a limitation. It was either insufficient; flawed through possible bias; too ‘top down’ and required engagement with mobilised, motivated lobbyists. There was also insufficient investigation of social impacts, particularly amongst rural communities directly affected by a project. Generally alternatives were inadequately considered, a recognised limitation of project level EIA. It is concluded that the EIA process should be started as early as possible (at prefeasibility), and that investigations should be expanded from a typical fatal flaw assessment to one that applies methodologies used in strategic assessment. In particular, opportunities and constraints of the natural and social environment should be assessed in the context of the mining option as well as other options, to allow for a more meaningful assessment of alternatives. Public participation must form an important part of this initial study, despite the potential risks associated with public engagement at an early stage in the project. The application of the IFC Performance Standards; and expanding the scope of the EIA into an environmental, social and health impact assessment will lead to a more rigorous procedure, and result in more defensible products which could successfully unlock the key to the resources in these sensitive areas.

As the number of environmental laws continues to steadily increase and the economic penalties for contamination problems become more severe, environmental management represents an important management function within today's U. S. mining industry. The economic impact to a mining company for contamination is not only realized in legal fees and fines but also in the cost of doing normal business. For example, a mining company with contaminated property applying for a loan may be refused because of a lending institution's reluctance to finance due to liability concerns. Or, an insurance company may decide to greatly increase its annual premiums because of existing or potential contamination problems. One of the main duties of the environmental manager is to seek ways to reduce these types of problems by eliminating contamination or by knowing what problems exist and designing corrective measures to prevent the situation from worsening.
