Rock salt has been mined by the solution method for many years in many countries. Attempts have been made in the past in Canada and various other countries to produce potash by the' same method. However, only Kalium Chemicals Limited (1) has been successful, possibly because the conditions in Saskatchewan are the most favorable conditions to be found so far for the development of a solution mining method for potash. There are significant differences in solution mining of rock salt and solution mining of potash. First, rock salt deposits are relatively pure in respect to soluble minerals, whereas potash is never found in the pure state and contains Substantial amounts of other soluble minerals, particularly rock salt. In comparison to rock salt, much less potash is dissolved and brought to the surface for the same amount of water circulated through the orebody. The amount of water to be evaporated per unit weight of product is a major difference. Much greater amounts of water must be evaporated when producing potash and the treatment of the brine is more complicated because other dissolved salts have to be separated. Secondly, the rock salt deposits, particularly the domes, are much thicker. Bed thickness is of prime importance because it determines the yield of a well and consequently the economics of the process. Furthermore, as rock salt provides a strong roof structure, larger cavities can be developed and this prolongs the life of the rock salt well.

"The twin decked Alaskan Way Viaduct is a passage to Seattle’s downtown waterfront and of great economic importance to the city. In 2001, the Nisqually earthquake damaged the viaduct and led to the redevelopment of this corridor. The project includes two miles of 57.5 ft diameter bored tunnel beneath downtown Seattle and a stretch of new highway and overpass bridges at the southern tunnel entrance. State-of-the-Art special foundation equipment was mobilized for the project to perform a broad range of geotechnical construction. Applications included soil mixing and jet grouting for confinement cells around new bridge foundations, large diameter secant pile walls for the Tunnel Boring Machine launch portal along with an extensive jet grouting regime for ground improvements within the tunnel alignment. This paper will study the evolution and use of advanced special geotechnical construction equipment and describe its application at the Alaskan Way Viaduct Replacement Project.INTRODUCTIONThe evolution of geotechnical construction equipment continues through innovative applications and continued modification or enhancement of machinery. Similarly and in parallel, market expectations continually demand more in terms of construction speed and performance. Together, market demands and contractor innovation have led way to the development of specialty geotechnical construction equipment with capabilities previously not seen feasible or possible. Several examples of this scenario have recently developed during design and construction of the Alaskan Way Viaduct Replacement Project.The Alaskan Way Viaduct Replacement Project is a joint project between the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT), and the City of Seattle. Three build alternatives were under consideration for replacing the Alaskan Way Viaduct: the Bored Tunnel Alternative, the Cut-and-Cover Tunnel Alternative, and the Elevated Structure Alternative. Ultimately, the bored tunnel option was selected as the best value approach. The project includes two miles of 57.5 ft diameter bored tunnel beneath downtown Seattle and a stretch of new highway and overpass bridges at the southern tunnel entrance. Several other associated improvements tie into this project that will ultimately lead to the complete demolition of the viaduct and redevelopment of Seattle’s waterfront."

"To minimise mine shaft maintenance over the long-term, some potash mine shaft sinking projects have required the provision of a continuous fully welded waterproof steel liner over a substantial depth to achieve zero water ingress. This brings many challenges, including the implementation of a bottom-up construction sequence incorporating extensive waterproof welding and how to ensure the integrity of the welded liner when subject to substantial temperature fluctuations that are likely to occur with a composite steel-concrete liner placed within an artificially frozen shaft excavation. This paper highlights the key challenges and discusses multiple mitigation measures including vertical shaft movement joints and a combined structural-thermal analysis approach. INTRODUCTION Whilst the application of combined steel and concrete shaft liners using a fully welded steel liner is not new and has been used in several previous projects, most notably at Lanigan (Storck, 1968 & Roesner, 1980), recently the need to provide a continuously welded steel waterproof liner for over 800 m length of shaft for a potash mine has been considered. The need for a fully continuous welded steel liner arises from the perceived benefits of providing a fully dry shaft environment to; increase the life expectancy of the shaft; reduce routine maintenance particularly combatting salt accretion and minimising wash down practices; and improve long-term ground stability by preventing salt dissolution. Whereas previous projects have employed discontinuous sections of steel liner, when a fully continuous liner is employed longitudinal shaft strains from thermal changes result in significant deformations that must be either explicitly accommodated or resisted. Note, these thermal vertical expansion forces are more than capable of lifting the shaft collar and head frame structures should they be fixed in place. Typically, shafts are designed to resist vertical forces (collar loads and self-weight) by creating mechanical interlock with the adjacent ground. In competent rock this occurs incrementally with the construction of the shaft liner, and occasional hitch/crib structures are constructed as intermediate foundations to guarantee the transfer of vertical forces at distinct horizons. Usually this means cribs are constructed at first rock head, above the station level, and at the sump, although sometimes additional cribs are formed when entering and exiting weak strata or when a change in shaft liner construction is required."

The ability to simulate the stability of post-mining landscapes over time scales ranging from decades to millennia is a critical element in the assessment of closure designs for uranium mines. Landscape Evolution Modelling (LEM) technologies provide a means to simulate and assess the long-term geomorphic stability of a conceptual rehabilitated landform for periods of thousands of years. However, a major issue with simulations derived from long-term modelling are the limitations associated with the data inputs. Specifically, simulations which utilise historic rainfall data only represent the variability of rainfall events that have occurred over a relatively short period. Consequently, these simulations run the risk of not accounting for the full range of rainfall variability that might be expected over an extended period of up to 10 000 years. Therefore, for this study a probabilistic approach was adopted to generate a stochastic synthetic rainfall data set to produce a series of unique rainfall scenarios, each representing a simulated period of 100 years. Importantly, utilising such an approach allows uncertainty in predictions to be better accounted for and provides a range or probability of likely outcomes.In this study, the effect of ten individual rainfall scenarios are assessed in terms of their impact on the predicted erosion and denudations rates produced by the CAESAR-Lisflood LEM for a conceptual rehabilitated landform of the Ranger Uranium Mine (RUM) in the Northern Territory of Australia, focusing on the Corridor Creek catchment (Figure 1). While legislation requires this site to be erosionally stable for at least 10 000 years (Commonwealth of Australia, 1987), here the focus is on the first one hundred years of landscape evolution, as this is the period in which erosion is expected to be higher, with limited vegetation cover or pedogenic development in the initial decades after rehabilitation. "Although South Africa possesses more than 80% of the world’s platinum reserves, its reputation for reliability in supplying platinum to global markets is under threat. This is due to the 49% decrease in output per worker (1999–2014), while the domestic costs have risen by more than 10% annually for the past 5 years. In addition, the continued decline in the commodity price by 38.3% (2012–2016) has resulted in a significant portion of the sector producing at a loss in 2015. The Chamber of Mines (now the Minerals Councilof South Africa) has suggested that solutions to improve productivity and reduce cost pressures are required. This research aims to provide operational excellence through the application of event chain project management (ECPM) to improve productivity and reduce operational costs. A case study was used to carry out research in platinum mines, with data collected using a motion-time study to measure the current efficiency of operations in each mining stope through actual activity durations. The results indicate that through the application of the event chain project management methodology, risks affecting the mining stope schedule can be managed, the efficiency of operations was improved by reducing the time spent on each activity, productivity was increased by shortening the project duration, and operational costs were reduced in the process. IntroductionSouth Africa’s total mining industry production was 4.9% lower in 2016 than in 2015; it decreased by 1.9% year-on-year in December 2016, with the main contributor to this negative trend being the platinum group metals (PGMs) with a drop of 15.1% and contributing -3.8% percentage points (Statistics South Africa, 2016). Although South Africa possesses more than 80% of the world’s platinum reserves, the 8% drop in production output since 2008 has put the platinum mining industry under the threat of being seen as an unreliable supplier to global markets. This decline in production is caused by the 49% decrease in output per worker between 1999 and 2014. In addition, the continued decline in the commodity price by 38.3% from 2012 to 2016 and an increase in operational costs during the same period resulted in a significant portion of the sector producing at a loss in 2015. A turnaround strategy is required to overcome these challenges. The Chamber of Mines has suggested, among others, the need for solutions to improve productivity and reduce cost pressures. The implementation of these solutions will ensure that the PGM industry thrives and reaches its potential of growing production to more than 322 t by 2020 (Baxter, 2016)."

Using a mine roof simulator press capable of duplicating the expected magnitude of vertical and horizontal forces experienced by underground mine roof supports, load capabilities of some roof support cribbings were measured. Comparative ultimate vertical support strengths are reported for cribs of old and new timber and nonreinforced and steel-fiber-reinforced (SFR) concrete blocks. In terms of load- bearing capability, cribs of new hickory and nonreinforced concrete blocks have about equal strength, and SFR concrete blocks are three times as strong. Wood aged 2 years underground lost 43 pct of its support strength. These data were obtained during the course of the initial familiarization exercise of the complex press.

Of all, planning usually receives the least attention, yet it is the area of most influence on the Net Present Value (NPV) of the reserve. With computer technology, numerous concepts and iterations are possible thereby closing the gap between optimal and actual design. This paper discusses the application of the split shell design at the De Beers Venetia open pit in South Africa.

This paper deals with application of Super Detox? stabilization technology to the treatment of electric arc furnace dust (US-EPA listed hazardous waste KO61 ). The process has been used on approximately 170,000 tons of electric arc furnace dust. In addition to the nearly four years of commercial experience at Sterling, Illinois, the process is now being permitted for application at two other locations. The process was originally developed by the Bethlehem Steel Corporation and then further improved by Conversion Systems, Inc. (Bethlehem Steel's Licensee). The treatment process offers many unique bases for its selection, including: A) Low cost compared to the treatment alternatives; B) Lowest available TCLP leachate levels for any process treating K061. Many other processes leave some residue that represents a disposal requirement, although often not addressed; C) Produces minimized final waste disposed, including the fact that the total volume of dust generated and less than the volume occupied by the residue slag from HTMR; and, D) Opportunities for the beneficial utilization of part or all of the waste stream through the development of chemical and physical characteristics. Each of these aspects will be specifically discussed in the paper, including that status of the operations now under permit.

The theory of constraints (TOC) is a business improvement method that focuses on exploiting a business’s bottleneck to deliver the highest possible profit. Early applications were mostly in the manufacturing industry; however, the theory in itself is completely generic and has now been applied widely in other industries such as services, retail, software and distribution, amongst others. The intent of the approach is attractive – it focuses on the ‘silver bullet’ rather than ‘death by a hundred projects’, and it focuses on growth rather than cost cutting. Application within the mining industry has been limited to date, although there are a few applications emerging. This paper discusses how TOC can be applied to maximise value during the project planning phase and how to maximise profits when the mine is operational. The paper uses two case studies to illustrate the approach. Case study 1 uses the approach to improve tactical mine planning, which delivers an increase in revenue of 58 per cent. Thermal pretreatment can significantly improve industrial comminution operations by reducing energy requirements and increasing mineral liberation. The effect of pretreatment using conventional and dielectric heating followed by quenching on the fracture properties of a number single and multiphase brittle materials has been investigated. The reduction in the impact fracture energies and particle strengths with and without pretreatment has been measured in precise single-particle experiments using the Ultrafast Load Cell. Variations in the fragmentation pattern caused by different pretreatments were assessed by measurements of the progeny size distributions. The differences in the effect of thermal treatment on single and multiphase materials are discussed based on the experimental results.

South32 (S32), a globally diversified mining and metals company, is listed on securities exchanges around the world (ASX, JSE, LSE), with its primary listing being on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX). Chapter 5 of the ASX Listing Rules (Australian Securities Exchange (ASX), 2019b) requires a mining entity to provide a summary of governance arrangements and internal controls with respect to its estimation processes, estimates and reporting of Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves annually. As a global company, it is also important to design and implement all governance processes and internal controls which can be used consistently across the organisation. The three lines model (previously known as the ‘three lines of defense’ model) is employed across South32 to manage risk where the first line (Practitioners) designs, implements and executes processes and controls to manage risk; the second line (Stewardship) identifies material gaps and improvement opportunities in the first line by monitoring conformance with the group requirements, legislative and regulatory obligations. Second line also assists with the development and improvement of core fundamentals based on industry good practise. The third line (Group Assurance) provides independent and objective assurance over the Group’s system of risk management and control. The estimation of resources and reserves for most of the operations within South32 is managed by the Planning function. The estimation process is part of the annual Life of Operation Plan (LoOP). The LoOP identifies and assesses the strategic alternatives for the development of an operation and recommends the preferred pathway based on value and risk. The LoOP starts with opportunity framing and the updated resources as an input and ends with the short-term plan and annual budget (the outputs). Ore Reserves estimates are one of the outputs from the LoOP. All the inputs and outputs follow internal standards and procedures which includes peer review and performance reconciliation. Stewardship (Second line) which is a centralised function has standards in place to ensure compliance to internal controls and external regulatory requirements. This includes assessment of the competence of Competent Persons, technical reviews, independent audits and training in the relevant chapters of the ASX Listing Rules, Guidance Notes and Appendices. Group Assurance (Third line) which reports to the Risk and Audit Committee of the Board of Directors ensures the design and operating effectiveness of the processes, standards and procedures associated with the estimation and reporting of resources and reserves. While the level of scrutiny has a different intent for each line in the three lines model, the overall purpose is to achieve a consistent outcome across the organisation

"The mine ventilation system plays an important role in mitigating human exposure to diesel particulate emissions (DPM), exhaust gases and heat in underground mines. The mine’s secondary ventilation systems are critical for diluting contaminants when working at the face of a heading. To improve these systems it is important to understand and visualise the localised air flow profiles. We have considered an approach that includes both tracer gas measurement–modelling to analyse this complex flow behaviour in a heading. The use of tracer gas enables reliable measurements of flow behaviour and differentiation between the contributions of various contaminant sources including DPM. A pilot study was conducted to demonstrate how tracer gas can be used to directly measure the effectiveness of ventilation dilution in a heading during shotcrete activity. This activity is considered to be one of the more challenging areas for diesel exhaust exposure management. Exposure sources include the diesel engine of the spraying equipment (Spraymech) and concrete agitator truck (Agi) that supplies the shotcrete. During operation both the Spraymech and Agi operators are located outside the equipment’s air-conditioned cabins and both are exposed to diesel exhaust. In the pilot study tracer gas was injected directly into the Spraymech exhaust stream. This allowed thorough mixing, ensuring the tracer gas was able to track exhaust gases and particulates released to the heading. The release was repeated at three different headings with varying degrees of secondary ventilation controls. The study showed that small changes to the secondary ventilation system can significantly impact the contaminant concentration. It also demonstrated that tracer gas can be used to isolate different contaminant sources. The intent is to use this technique in a more comprehensive study to develop best practice guidelines for secondary ventilation installations. Tailings pond safety monitoring is vital for preventing dam failures and ensuring environmental safety. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) can enhance tailings pond monitoring with flexible operational cycles and the ability to collect remote sensing data from inaccessible areas. While many mining operations have adopted UAVs for tailings pond management, their full potential in data acquisition and subsequent analytical processing remains largely untapped. This paper explores various case studies where UAVs have been utilised for monitoring key aspects of tailings ponds such as beach line indicators, dam displacement and erosion, slurry discharge processes, and tailings pond capacity. We also present examples where data derived from UAVs have been instrumental in slope stability analysis, seepage modelling, Tailings Dam Breach Analysis (TDBA), and risk prediction. By integrating UAV technology with traditional ground-based sensor techniques, this approach significantly enhances the precision and reliability of hazard prevention and management in tailings pond operations.

This paper investigates how to manage and model the vibrations caused by rock blasting in a Brazilian underground mine. Considering the frequent detonations and the previous lack of effective vibration control, understanding, and reducing the impact of these seismic waves is critical. We emphasize the use of the near field model technique, which considers the varied physical properties of different rocks, optimizes blasting plans, and minimizes damage to the rock mass. We detail a case study that demonstrates a comprehensive approach to vibration control. The discussion includes the creation of a monitoring plan, the methodology used, results and the specific challenges and solutions found during the blasting process. This study provides a practical guide for similar future projects. Finally, we present a predictive model based on the collected data, offering insights into the vibrations caused by blasting. This model helps decision-makers minimize the risk of displacing rock blocks in the blasting area, improving safety and operational efficiency

"Developments in understanding the brittle fracture of rock over the past two decades ultimately led to the acceptance of a cohesion-weakening-friction-strengthening model as an appropriate strategy for the modelling of spalling using a continuum approach. This strength model has been used to replicate observed failure depths and geometries for a number of case studies in the literature, most notably the AECL Underground Research Laboratory in Manitoba. One thing which these case studies typically ignore, however, is the influence of rock dilatancy on the evolution of brittle failure. Physically, this phenomenon is the volumetric expansion of the rock due to fracture opening; numerically, this phenomenon is captured by the flow rule, which is often characterized by the dilation angle, ?. Accurately modelling rock dilatancy in conjunction with strength evolution is necessary both to predict the magnitude and distribution of ground displacements, as well as the exact depth and shape of the fracturing zone. Both of these factors can have significant implications for support design. This paper is focussed on presenting some of the recent developments in this field in the context of a number of numerical modelling case studies. Initially, a new model for the dilatancy of brittle rock is presented, as well as some representative data and model parameters for different rock types. Next, several case studies of highly stressed tunnels and shafts are presented. The results of continuum numerical models are presented to demonstrate the ability of the back analyses to match observed in-situ measurements and obtained. The predictive capabilities of the material model are also highlighted for cases where sufficient “a priori” information (such as laboratory compression testing data) are available. The issues of model nonuniqueness and strain-localization/bifurcation are also addressed."

Just as a mine has a lifecycle, employees working within the mining sector also make several transitions throughout their career, from initial recruitment to retirement from the industry. Throughout the employment lifecycle, employees bring skills and knowledge that significantly contribute to the global economy. These skills are developed through education, professional training, coaching and through hands-on experience. Despite the current economic conditions and the demand for minerals, the mining industry is facing a substantial skills shortage due to the disparity between the number of new workers entering the mining industry and a largely ?graying workforce?. Although educational programs continue to evolve to attract people with a wide range of skills, the diversity of jobs and the strains of working in remote mining operations continue to present challenges for recruitment and retention of employees. This gap also presents challenges around knowledge transfer at a corporate and mine-site level; employers will require cultural and techno-sociological approaches to ease through these transitions. At the same time, there has been an explosion of social media tools that facilitate information sharing, cross-organizational collaboration, distance learning and knowledge capture. These tools have become increasingly popular in the last few years and their applications vary widely. The mining sector has started to adopt these tools for a number of purposes, including opportunities to harness social media to enhance human resources interactions, outreach and oversight. This paper will outline several case studies that explore leading practices for how the application of new media can assist organizations and individuals as they progress through their careers. This paper will illustrate how new social media communication technologies can be used to increase employee engagement and build organizational capacity in the mining industry. The paper will also include strategies for how to implement social media to enhance human resources applications and will cover ideas for monitoring and evaluation.

Mining companies are striving to achieve new levels of operational maturity and drive process improvement across the organisation in the face of unprecedented demand and limited supply of experienced human resources. Advanced analytics techniques can help overcome these fundamental challenges by applying data techniques not previously applied in mining. Today, decisions are usually locally optimised but do not achieve optimum capability for the value chain. Although more information is collected then ever before, it is difficult to link many sources of data together in the same place in real-time, for example plant history, maintenance, mine planning, logistics and engineering data. Consequently complex analysis of data is time consuming and requires specialist skills and knowledge, and is often neglected in the decision-making process. In the future, analytics will close the loop between analysing data and taking action. Analytics will become embedded in the business and routinely applied to improve decision making across the organisation, from senior management to operations and maintenance workers, but will not require specialist skills or be time consuming to analyse data. As analytics becomes embedded in the business process, decisions are supported by data (not on gut feel), and critically, data from many sources are integrated in real-time to improve the quality of decisions. Ultimately, predictive tools will help suggest, or even in some cases automate, courses of action. The main opportunities for analytics exist where the enterprise requires supporting technology to enable it to continue to evolve to higher level of maturity. This will be in the areas of asset management, rapid reconciliation and adaptive planning, and the inbound and outbound supply chains. Advanced analytics are also a key enabler for increasing the effectiveness and realising the true value of Remote Operations Centres to safely and efficiently support operations in remote locations with smaller workforces.

"Solar generated power has long been considered a useful energy source only for low-energy density and non-mission critical use, such as providing electricity for residential applications. The success of Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) facilities, such as the 64 MW Nevada Solar- 1 near Las Vegas, have demonstrated that solar does have application to high energy density industries such as materials and chemical production. This paper will discuss the current operating con_guration of the Solar-1 facility and show how proposed modi_cations, such as addition of thermal storage and use of liquid salts as the working uid, can further improve the e_ciency and energy production of the plant.IntroductionThe United States as a nation is the largest consumer of energy in the world at an estimated 29 trillion kWh per year[1], which is roughly 15% of total global energy consumption[2]. On a per capita basis, the United States also leads most of the world, using an average of 96,000 kWh per person[3]. Roughly 40% of the energy consumed in the United States was produced from petroleum, 23% from coal, 23% from natural gas, 9% from nuclear and the remaining 5% from renewable sources such as solar, geothermal, wind, and hydroelectric[1].Energy demands associated with the industrial-scale production of chemicals and materials is a signicant portion of the United States total energy consumption. Roughly 33% of the energy consumed in the United States is used by the industrial sector, with 22% of this amount used in chemical production, 16% used in petroleum rening, and 14% used in the smelting and rening of metals[1]. Energy costs are also a signicant, if not the most signicant, portion of the total production costs for many materials. For example, roughly 30% of the cost of producing aluminum is the electricity used in the Hall-Heroult process [4], while the cost of energy is roughly 15% of the total cost of producing steel products [5].The primary sources of power for the industrial sector have been coal, petroleum, hydro- electric and nuclear. The use of alternative energy sources, e.g. solar, wind, geothermal, for industrial materials production has been slow in coming because they are intermittent and low-energy density sources, i.e. no solar power at night, no wind power when the air is still, etc. The success of Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) facilities, such as the 64 MW Nevada Solar-1 (NS-1) near Las Vegas, have demonstrated that solar can have application to high energy density industries such as materials and chemical production.This paper will discuss the current conguration of the NS-1 facility, and potential modications to the facility that will increase both its power e_ciency and power density."

As new technologies are introduced to the mining industry, the challenges related to their safe assimilation and the potential changes they bring to mining techniques necessitate adjustments to the current operations. Predictive simulations are critical to understanding unforeseen scenarios and shifting costly changes from the operational stage to the design. The Digital Twin methodology has gained a lot of attention in recent years. Many industries, from manufacturing to engineering and even social sciences, are adopting this approach to understand better the complex systems they are working with. By considering the enormous expenses and risks related to a pilot project, DT could replace that by acting as a prototype in which realistic tests and simulations are carried out with close to zero cost. DT includes a data hub, simulation and analysis tools, and visualization platforms to enable appropriate designs and monitoring plans focusing on unknown areas. A few examples of DT's application in mining include fleet management, Mine-to-Mill optimization (especially D&B), geotechnical digital twin (gDT), etc. When developing regulations, testing the efficiency of the mine layout, design, and magnitude of the restricted area and its access points, human-machine interactions, risk identification, and management processes, examining the efficacy of control systems, and monitoring, DT could help speed up (or completely replace) the process in the physical world.
