John Duer Irving, who left his post as Professor of Economic Geology at the Sheffield Scientific School, New Haven, Conn., to join the Eleventh Regiment of Engineers shortly after the declaration of war, died in France, July 26, 1918, from an attack of pneumonia. Through the initiative of Mr. Benjamin B. Lawrence, a memorial service to Captain Irving was held at St. Paul's Chapel, Columbia University, on Sunday afternoon, August 4, which was' attended by members of Captain Irving's family, and about four hundred of his friends from Columbia, Yale, the American Institute of Mining Engineers and the Association of the 11th Regiment of Engineers. Professor James F. Kemp delivered the memorial address, and has prepared for the Institute the following account of Captain Irving's life, Professor Kemp and Captain Irving having been associated on the most intimate terms for a number of years. , The war has brought home to friends and kin in the western shores of thc Atlantic many losses whose suddenness has the shock of a blow. Many more will follow, but none can leave a sharper sense of regret than the news that the keen and productive mind; the inspiring teacher; the successful and considerate editor, the fine, true man and friend had all passed away when John Duer Irving made the final great gift to the service of his country, in the cause of decency and right. In the closing days of July, the cable brought the tidings that toward midnight on the twentieth of the month pneumonia had proved too great a tax upon one already worn by excessive labors. John Duer Irving was born in Madison, Wis., August 18, 1874. His father, Roland Duer Irving, was at the time professor of geology, mineralogy and metallurgy in the State University of Wisconsin.' Roland . Irving, the father, had entered Columbia College in 1863, but trouble with his eyes compelled him to suspend his studies in the classical course in his sophomore year, and to replace study with some months of life and travel in England. Ultimately his eyes became stronger, and he entered the School of Mincs, completing the course for the degree of Engineer of Mines in 1869, with the third class graduated. The class of eleven contained other future geologists. It numbered on its roll Henry Newton and Walter P. Jenney of the early survey of the Black Hills, where John, future son of Roland, was in the course of years to make his doctor's dissertation, and with its publication his really serious entrance into the profession. Roland Irving was a favorite student of Professor J. S. Newberry, affectionately known to all of his students as "Uncle John," and after some experience in mining and smelting in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, joined the Ohio Survey under Dr. Newberry. The work in Ohio was largely performed during the vacations of the University of Wisconsin, to whose chair Roland Irving was called in 1870. Later, his residence in Wisconsin led to two events of prime importance in the history of American geology. He began the study of the Gogebic iron range and caught the clue to the origin and stratigraphy of the iron ores of all the Lake Superior ranges; and he later undertook the mapping and description of the copper-bearing rocks of the Lake Superior basin. (San Francisco Meeting, October, 1911.) A MERE record of Emmons's professional career would very inadequately represent the man. That he was eminent we know, and our successors will realize in due time; but they must depend upon us for knowledge of a singularly wholesome, modest, unselfish personality, and of a character that did honor to a profession in which trustworthiness is indispensable: Those members of the Institute who met Emmons are his friends, and I never knew one of these who was not the better for that friendship. Emmons was born in Boston, Mar. 29, 1841, the son- of Nathaniel H. and Elizabeth (Wales) Emmons, and was named Samuel Franklin after an ancestor who was of the same family as Benjamin Franklin. He took the degree of Bachelor of Arts at Harvard in 1861, and soon afterwards went abroad to complete his education. From 1862 to 1864 he attended the courses at the École Impériale des Mines at Paris, lie e Beaumont and Daubrée being among his professors. The year 1864-1865 he spent at Freiberg under Cotta and other famous teachers; after which he spent another year in traveling through Europe. Like many other renowned geologists, he approached his ultimate profession from its economic side, and was thus from the first imbued with a sense of high responsibility in the promulgation of scientific opinions or conclusions. With hypotheses which were interesting merely because. they were ingenious or even plausible, he would have nothing to do. In 1867 he joined the Geological Exploration of the Fortieth Parallel at its organization under Clarence King, serving at first as a volunteer, but soon receiving a regular appointment. This expedition was the first one of purely geological character sent out by the United States Government. THE following paragraphs, constituting the concluding portion of the Annual Report of the Council for 1903, have been withheld from publication until now, in order to make them as accurate and complete as possible. They will be published in Volume XXXV. of the Transactions in their proper place at the end of the said Annual Report. Franklin Ballou was born in Pittsburg, Pa., May 29, 1845. He was the son of an old resident, Arthur Ballou, a manufacturer and wholesale dealer in vinegar. In early youth Franklin attended the Western University of Pittsburg, but left school at the age of 16 to become book-keeper for his father, upon whose retirement from business, in 1868, he associated himself with Walter C. Childs, of Pittsburg, in the manufac¬ture of furnace-grates and asbestos-cement for blast-furnaces. This firm was known as W. C. Childs & Co., and did a success¬ful business for several years. In 1869 Mr. Ballou married Miss May S. Wilson, daughter of Judge Wilson, of Lewistown, Pa. In 1876 he spent several months traveling in the West and studying the mining industry, which greatly interested him. In consequence of this journey, he wound up his business in Pittsburg and removed in 1877 to Georgetown, Colo., where for several years he conducted a sampling-works, and built up an extensive business as an agent for the sale of ores, besides engaging to some extent in mining enterprises. , It is said that he controlled at one time about one-eighth of the output of the Leadville mines. In the early 80's, he became Vice-President and General Manager of the Bimetallic Smelter at Leadville, of which Mr. David H. Moflat was the principal owner. THE following paragraphs comprise such information as the Secretary has been able to obtain concerning the members and associates whose deaths have been reported. Further particulars or corrections of errors, and biographical data concerning deceased members or associates not already noticed in this way, are solicited. [SECRETARY'S NOTE.-All of these notices have been revised, and some of then have been more or less completely prepared, by me. To those which contain more particularly the expression of my personal feeling, my initials have been appended. The labor of preparing or editing these paragraphs has been in many respects both welcome and interesting, on the one hand, and sorrowful, on the other. In going through the list, I have repeatedly felt like one who, visiting the Morgue, suddenly comes upon the pale face of a dear friend, of whose death lie was not aware ; and, even when this fact was known to me, the work of recording it has brought upon me a flood of recollections, almost preventing the discharge of that official duty. The list for 1907 seems to me to he peculiarly sad, comprising, as it does, so many sudden deaths by violence or accident, so many veterans, removed too soon, and so many young men whose early departure impoverishes the future, even more than the present. Probably, this feeling on my part is largely due to the circumstance that the increased membership of the Institute necessarily in¬volves an increase of the annual death-list. Probably, also, it is connected with the circumstance that during the first years of the history of the Institute-say from 1871 to 1880-it was joined by men of all ages, and that the death-rate is consequently now above the average which would result from the normal annual addition, principally of young men. And finally, I must admit that, as one of the original members of the Institute, and practically connected with it for nearly thirty-seven years as Acting President, President or Secretary, I am peculiarly impressed and depressed by the successive deaths of those who were my associates in the years of its early struggles and triumphs. I do not wish to inflict upon my younger colleagues the melancholy reflections of an increasingly lonesome old man. In fact, my prevailing mood concerning the Institute is not at all melancholy, but triumphant and hopeful. If I may be permitted to preach at all, I would enforce, from the texts given below, a moral which many of them declare so forcibly as to preclude the necessity of expository enforcements-namely, the duty of every one of us, old or young, to give to his brethren, as he goes along, and without waiting for some future occasion for a comprehensive and monumental contribution to technical literature, the results of his observation and experience. The microbial-mediated recovery of valuable metals locked in mining wastes presents an economical alternative to conventional hydrometallurgical processes. The present study investigated the bioleaching response of a low-grade nickeliferous pyrrhotite tailings (0.6 wt% Ni) and an upgraded pyrrhotite tailings (1 wt% Ni) produced by Vale Base Metals in the Sudbury Basin of Ontario, with the ultimate aim of maximizing Ni recovery. The initial part of the study focused on the bacterial adaptive evolution protocol, by repeatedly sub-culturing an indigenous culture from an acid mine drainage site on 2% (w/v) pyrrhotite tailings. The results showed that the extent of Ni dissolution is positively correlated with microbial activity. Microbial profiling revealed A. ferroxidans to be the dominant member of the microbial consortium. The enriched culture was used for optimizing the growth medium by varying the concentration of essential growth nutrients. Finally, an aerated biotic and abiotic leach of a 10% (w/v) upgraded pyrrhotite tailings with and without pH control, showed a higher recovery of Ni in the pH controlled experiments. These results demonstrate that a high concentration of the oxidant Fe3+ in solution promotes the dissolution of Ni. Furthermore, the sulphide conversion into So was found to be higher in the pH controlled experiments (32%), relative to the experiment without pH control (10%).

Thiobacillus ferrooxidans released copper from -400-mesh chalcopyrite at a rate of 54 mg/I/hr. Any flotation chemicals remaining on the concentrate did not inhibit the leach rate. Zinc rougher tailings were also leachable. With bacteria, 75 per cent of the zinc and 68 per cent of the copper came into solution. In the sterile controls, only 16 per cent of the zinc and 10 per cent of the copper were released; 100 per cent of the copper and 36 per cent of the zinc were leached from pyrite cinders through the action of bacteria, and 17 per cent of the copper and 10 per cent of the zinc were solubilized in the sterile controls. Less than 0.027 per cent of ~he iron came into solution. The majority of the copper in a converter slag was acid-soluble, but a reverberatory slag responded to microbiological leaching. About 62 per cent of the copper came into solution, compared to 12 per cent in the sterile control. The various factors influencing the rate and extent of microbiological leaching are discussed.

"An industrial waste liquor having high sulfate concentrations was subjected to biological treatment using the sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) Desulfovibrio desulfuricans. Toxicity levels of different sulfate, cobalt and nickel concentrations toward growth of the SRB with respect to biological sulfate reduction kinetics was initially established. Optimum sulfate concentration to promote SRB growth amounted to 0.8 - 1 g/L. The strain of D. desulfuricans used in this study initially tolerated up to 4 -5 g/L of sulfate or 50 mg/L of cobalt and nickel, while its tolerance could be further enhanced through adaptation by serial subculturing in the presence of increasing concentrations of sulfate, cobalt and nickel. From the waste liquor, more than 70% of sulfate and 95% of cobalt and nickel could be precipitated as sulfides, using a preadapted strain of D. desulfuricans. Probable mechanisms involving biological sulfide precipitation and metal adsorption onto precipitates and bacterial cells are discussed.IntroductionIndustrial effluents from hydrometallurgical and mineral processing operations often contain high sulfate and metal concentrations posing significant disposal problems, which require urgent solution to avoid serious environmental contamination. In such waste liquors, sulfate and heavy metals such as cobalt, nickel, zinc and iron originate from the chemical or biological oxidation of exposed sulfide minerals. Reduction of sulfate and precipitation of toxic metal ions from industrial wastes is essential from the viewpoint of environmentally acceptable waste disposal and recovery of associated strategic metals.Many of these heavy metals are essential for metabolic activity of bacterial cells at low levels. But they exert toxic effects at concentrations encountered in polluted water. Removal of toxic metals through biological reduction of sulfates from industrial waste waters have been practiced for several decades. Metal remediation through common physicochemical techniques such as oxidation-reduction, chemical precipitation, filtration, electrochemical treatment, evaporation, ion exchange and reverse osmosis processes is expensive and not suitable in the case of voluminous effluents containing complexing organic matter and low metal concentrations. Further, strong and contaminating reagents are used for desorption, resulting in toxic sludge and secondary environmental pollution. Biotechnological approaches can be more efficient and cost effective for detoxification of such effluents. Biotreatment/ bioremoval offers several advantages over conventional chemical and physical treatment technologies, especially for diluted and mixed contaminants. Biological detoxification, which involves the use of microbes to detoxify and degrade environmental contaminants, has received increasing attention in recent years (Iwamoto and Nasu, 2001). In addition, valuable metals can be recovered from metal sulfide sludge (Boonstra et al., 1999)."

With the emergence ofbiooxidation as a viable process for the pre treatment of refractory gold ores, so have the number of publica­tions on this topic increased dramatically. To a novice in the field of biooxidation, the infonnation presented is often confusing and sometimes even incorrect. Infonnation has also been published that is misleading in that it highlights a particular feature of a process that is either totally irrelevant or of no consequence to the ultimate goal viz. achieving the maximum economical gold recovery. To assist a potential user of biooxidation in evaluating the available published infonnation some guidelines or considera­tions for some of the more important aspects are given, as well as some extracts from publications that demonstrate the manner in which information has been presented.

Microorganisms are increasingly finding use in mineral processing and hydrometallurgy both for the enhancement of mineral engineering operations and for the remediation of mineral industry wastes. Some of the applications, such as biologically assisted leaching of sulfide ores and biooxidation of refractory sulfide gold ores, are established commercial processes. Others, such as the use of organisms for the removal of heavy metal ions from dilute aqueous streams, are nearing commercial application. Other uses of microorganisms are potentially possible. These include use of microorganisms in leaching non-sulfide ores, the flocculation or flotation of minerals and remediation of toxic chemicals discharged from mineral engineering operations.

In recent years, the environmental issues related to the landfill shortage received considerable importance. Many polymeric solid wastes have high resistivity to chemical and biological degradation, and options are sought by which these wastes can be recycled and reused, or reduced in volume. The present study investigated the biodegradation of polyethylene by Aspergillus niger, and biodesulfurization of rubber by pure and mixed cultures of Thiobacillus thiooxidans and Thiobacillus ferrooxidans. The fungus, A. niger, was found to metabolize portions of polyethylene. Quantitative calorimetric measurements revealed that the amorphocity of the sample decreased during biodegradation. Removal of sulfur from synthetic rubber samples containing 2 to 15% sulfur, was studied in shake flask experiments and the associated oxygen consumption was studied in Warburg respirometers. The mixed bacterial cultures were more effective in the desulfurization of rubber samples than the pure cultures of T. thiooxidans and T. ferrooxidans. The data obtained in these studies may have far reaching consequence for the development of new effective processes regarding the remediation and management of discarded polymeric packaging wastes and car tire rubber materials.

"Recent advances in microbiology have made the application of biotechnology to metallurgical processes possible. Hydrometallurgy stands to gain the cost from the use of microorganisms, as they are useful for both dissolution aids and for removing metals from solution. The development of genetic engineering techniques promises to greatly increase the importance of bioprocessing of metals and minerals by the year 2000.In this paper, the basic effects of microorganisms on metallurgical processes are reviewed, and the applications which are currently either in use or near being used are presented. Representative data collected at Michigan Technological University is also given.IntroductionMany hydrometallurgical operations exist which are thermodynamically possible, but which are industrially impractical due to slow kinetics, high reagent costs, or the need for a highly corrosive environment. However, recent discoveries in microbiology indicate that in many cases these difficulties can be reduced greatly by the action of bacteria and other microorganisms (1-8).A major advantage of using living organisms in hydrometallurgy is that once the culture is established the microorganisms produce their own reagents either from the material being processed or from low-cost nutrient supplements. They thus allow extremely complex chemical reactions to be carried out at reasonable cost. The major drawback of using microorganisms is their inability to tolerate extremely high temperatures, excessive concentrations of toxic metals, or very highly acidic, alkaline, or corrosive conditions. However, the complex reactions which bacteria make possible frequently eliminate the need for such extreme conditions. Also, in recent years a number of organisms have been isolated from such exotic environments as hot springs and deep-ocean vents which can tolerate temperatures higher than was previously thought possible for any organism, and can catalyze a number of metallurgically important reactions (8)."

DURING the summer of 1942 several chromite deposits were discovered in the Lac du Bonnet district about eighty miles northeast of Winnipeg. The deposits are confined to the Bird River complex, a folded composite sill of basic and ultrabasic igneous rocks of early Precambrian age that lies to the north of Bird river (1). The outcrop of the sill represents the trace of an easterly plunging anticline, the south limb extending from the northeast bay of Lac du Bonnet eastward to Bird lake, and the other limb, 6 to 12 miles north, lying between Maskwa river and Euclid lake. The south limb of the sill is 20 miles long, and the northern counterpart 15 miles; but its continuity is interrupted by faulting and by the intrusion of younger granite, so that the total length of outcrop of both limbs does not likely exceed 25 miles. The sill is intrusive into early Precambrian greenstones and associated sedimentary rocks. The chromite discoveries have been made at several localities on both limbs of the sill, and in each case at the same geological horizon. The sill comprises an upper layer of hornblende gabbro and a lower layer of serpentinized peridotite, and altogether is from 500 to 3,500 feet thick. The chromite zone is within and near the top of the peridotite layer, and thus about midway of the sill, both of the limbs of which stand nearly vertical. This geological relationship was established early in the exploration of the initial discoveries and served as the basis for successful predictions of later discoveries. The chromite zone probably persists throughout the length of the sill, but its width and chromite content are not everywhere the same. The initial exploration along both limbs of the sill has shown a combined total length of about 12,000 feet of chromite ore varying in width from 6 to 12 feet. In many places the overburden is thick and obscures the continuity of the chromite zone; but as investigation proceeds the known deposits will be extended and new ones will be found. Thus, although a total length of 12,000 feet of ore has been investigated up to the present time, there is an indicated length of approximately 31,000 feet along which the ore is more than 4 to 5 feet wide. This estimate is based on geological considerations and represents a total tonnage in the order of 15,000 tons per vertical foot of depth.

Since the initial discovery of phosphate rock resources in North West Queensland in 1966, significant changes in ownership and development direction have occurred. Initially development of the resource involved beneficiation to produce a more saleable grade of phosphate rock. However more recently development has focused on the production of a high analysis fertilizer product on the minesite. These changes have been influenced by economics, industry/government cooperation and a changing phosphate industry.

It has become apparent in recent years to everyone intimately concerned with the future of the American fuels industries that the growth in demand for energy has become a topic receiving considerable attention, and that investigators are leaning more and more toward a mathematical approach to deduce what pattern that growth will follow. Though coal has been included by necessity In all-studies of future energy markets, it has not been the subject of mathematical analysis or description as frequently as has been total energy or some of the other fuels, particularly petroleum, It is the intent in this particular paper, to subject bituminous coal consumption to a preliminary mathematical scrutiny which can lead to a more logical estimation of the general level of bituminous coal consumption for the next decade, as well as formulating an approach toward describing how coal consumption may vary as the result of the annual variations in activity in the United States, economy, The approach utilized is more sophisticated than the mere projection of the historical trend of bituminous coal consumption. Such a projection would lead to a continuation of the recent decline, indicating that coal consumption would reach zero some thirty years from now. On the other hand, the mathematical analysis described here is a relatively simple, straightforward approach and- is not intended to represent the-ultimate in mathematical economic analysis as now practiced, It is hoped that this will contribute to our knowledge of bituminous coal markets. Even more, it is hoped that it will help arouse a greater interestin utilizing mathematical and statistical analysis when studying the bituminous coal industry. - Since this is a preliminary study, comments and criticisms are anticipated.

WITHOUT QUESTION the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania contains the most remarkable coal deposits of the whole world. Within its borders ,are to be found excellent coals ranging in rank from the high volatile bituminous of the western part of 'the state through the low volatile or semi-bituminous of central Pennsylvania to that aristocrat of solid fuels, anthracite, found in the East. . . . But while other states and even the Federa1 Government have recognized the needs of the coal industry, Pennsylvania has not. Though bituminous coal represents one of the most important industries in the state, far more important in annual productive wealth than agriculture, for example, hundreds, of thousands of dollars have been spent on agricultural research whereas little or nothing has been spent on coal investigation.

THE bituminous sand of northern Alberta has already an extensive literature, and most of the reports dealing with the subject are still available (see Selected Bibliography at end of paper). A phenomenon so striking and, as regards its extent, so unique, as the deposit in the vicinity of McMurray settlement could not fail to attract the notice of the early explorers, and we find references to it as far back as the latter part of the eighteenth century. However, scarcely a thought had been bestowed upon the possible economic value of minerals in the the remote northern parts of Canada before the second decade of the present century, and practically no detailed mapping had been done north of the town of Athabaska. The late Wm. Ogilvie made a track survey of Athabaska river in 1884, and surveys of certain lines-including the 23rd base line-had been completed by 1911. Between this base line and lake Athabaska, nothing had been attempted. Actually, no definite information at all was available regarding the character and extent of the bituminous sand when, in the earl y summer of 1913, a reconnaissance party set out from Athabaska for McMurray. At that period, the journey was made in summer by scow or canoe. No telegraph line had been laid, and a casual mail service by canoe or dog team once in three months formed the only means of communication with the outside world. The investigation has begun by the Mines Branch was continued during several subsequent years. The sand deposits were studied and sampled, the bi rumen was extracted from the sand and studied chemically and physically, and the economic significance of the deposit was given exhaustive study.

"This article details the use of an alternative testing method to the 2004 "Post-Tensioning Institute (PTI) Recommendations for Prestressed Rock and Soil Anchors" manual’s recommendations for temporary and permanent rock anchors for applications in shafts and tunnels. This method was developed and used for the Black River Tunnel (BRT) project in Lorain, OH as a means to reduce testing time of rock bolts during shaft construction while maintaining a similar level of quality control and assurance. The following sections will detail the project background, subsurface characteristics, shaft construction, the 2004 PTI testing method and associated difficulties, the alternative testing method and conclusions reached.Project backgroundThe city of Lorain is located in north central Ohio on the south shore of Lake Erie, approximately 40 km (25 miles) west of Cleveland and 119 km (74 miles) east of Toledo. The city chose to build a large-diameter storage tunnel and pump station to meet its requirements to reduce sanitary sewer overflows to the nearby Black River. NTH Consultants Ltd. (NTH) was retained by the city’s prime consultant, Malcolm Pirnie Inc. (now the water division of Arcadis), to perform a geotechnical investigation, develop design and construction bid documents for the tunnel and shaft liner systems and ultimately provide oversight assistance during the construction phase of the project.The BRT is an approximately 1,700-m (5,560-ft) long, 7-m (23-ft) diameter rock tunnel to be lined with a 5.8-m (19-ft) inside diameter secondary concrete lining (Fig. 1). The tunnel is designed to accept flow at a new drop shaft (Shaft 3) located on the west side of the Black River, across from the city of Lorain Black River waste water treatment plant (BRWWTP). The tunnel will be dewatered at the south end by a large diameter pump station (Shaft 1) located in the existing Lorain Port Authority Public Boat Launch. Flow from the new pump station will be discharged into an existing shallow interceptor sewer and directed back to the BRWWTP."

Blasor is a new mine planning tool which is being used in the long and medium-term optimization of multi-open-pit operations throughout BHP Billiton’s Base Metals and bulk commodities portfolio. It is not just a scheduler, nor even only a schedule optimizer—although this function lies at the heart of the tool’s functionality—but a pit development plan optimizer, used from ultimate pit design and process plant capacity sizing right through to mining phase design and optimal panel scheduling. The tool uses a mixed-integer-linear-programming optimization engine to determine when material should be excavated and where it should be sent to optimize discounted operating cash flow over the life of operation. The core software design concept of Blasor is to provide a tool which is intuitive and flexible enough so that a competent mine planner can perform a pit development plan optimization without assistance from optimization specialists. To this end, a generalized graphical user interface has been implemented which allows full configuration of the optimization problem, including the definition of all inputs and constraints, specification of the material flow topology, bin and destination class definitions and full specification of the economic model encompassing prices and costs. It may be difficult to imagine but small engineering companies do exist, even in relatively large cities like San Antonio. Due to the limited capital available for the purchase or use of equipment such as computers, many times the small company must evaluate a blast damage claim by limited means. This paper will discuss how a relatively small company has managed to become the leading blast damage experts in an area without the use of computers or sophisticated equipment. It will be shown that a single individual in a company who is familiar with vibration theory, local soil conditions and who does not mind spending long hours with a calculator and reference books can satisfy both the insuranc e adjuster or attorney, and the homeowner concerning the claim. Several examples will be given which show the typical flow of work and the ultimate outcome. This paper will focus on the special problems encountered by a small firm and how these can be overcome, and the unique interaction of a small engineering firm with both the insurance adjuster/attorney and the homowner that can lead to an equitable settlement of the claim.
