Western Deep Levels, a seismically active deep level gold mine, started placing backfill in their narrow tabular workings as part of the regional support strategy in 1986. Over the years the percentage of working places being backfilled has been gradually increasing. At the end of 1995 the support efficiency and the labour productiveness relating to support installation were scrutinised to determine if resources were being optimised. Owing to financial, safety and productivity constraints it was decided to redesign stope support to be less labour intensive, safer and provide an integrated stope support system. This new integrated system will thus combine the previously used temporary, permanent and back area support consisting of mechanical props, hydraulic props and backfill respectively. Backfill previously formed an integral part of the regional support in conjunction with strike stabilising pillars. To design the integrated support system the backfill placement quality has to be exceptionally good and placement must be done as close as possible to the working face. The backfill to face distance was reduced by 30 per cent and in some areas by more than 50 per cent with an increase of square metres filled to increase the effect of the backfill even more. This paper addresses the design and successful implementation of an integrated stope support system based on the optimisation of backfill to the extent where installation of mechanical and hydraulic jacks could be eliminated.

Current treatment and disposal procedures are compared for clay slimes resulting from the extraction of Alberta oil sands, the extraction of Florida phosphate matrix, the recovery of diamonds from kimberlite deposits in South Africa, the recovery of kaolin from clay deposits in southwest England and the upgrading of bauxite ore. Published research in the area is reviewed, and common trends which are emerging in the disposal of clay slimes are discussed.

The environmental and economic impacts of a significant dependence on fossil fuels are affecting the future of sectors such as of mining. These impacts are prompting the Australian Government to seek solutions for reducing its dependence on fossil fuels more generally, such developing clean energy and improving energy efficiency. However, limited research has been undertaken to assess the potential synergies between clean energy and mining in an uncertain global future. This paper analyses current energy use by mining in Australia and reviews the drivers and opportunities for energy efficiency and cleaner energy technologies to be coupled to mining under three future scenarios. Linkages between mining and clean energy are investigated for three global scenarios for mining and metals to 2030, developed by the World Economic Forum (WEF), namely Green Trade Alliance, Rebased Globalism and Resource Security. These scenarios are applied to assess how they could change the barriers, opportunities and trade-offs required for the development of a more sustainable energy sources by the minerals industry in Australia.

Western bituminous coal can be processed to low sulfur liquid fuels by fast reactions. A process (LEFCO) under development at the University of Utah uses coal and catalyst under hydrogen pressure to convert 60 to 70 percent of the coal matter to fuel liquids and gases. Coals have been processed in small diameter (less than 1/2 inch) tubes and at reaction residence times of less than 10 seconds. Effects of process variables on the yield and quality of products have been studied. General features of the process and the properties and characteristics of the products produced are presented. Special features of the process that distinguish it from other liquefaction processes under development are also discussed.

The extractive metallurgical industry is a major consumer of high-temperature process heat. It is, consequently, a major contributor of C02 emissions and other greenhouse gases derived from the combustion of fossil fuels for heat and electricity generation, or from the process itself. These emissions can be substantially reduced by replacing fossil fuels with solar energy as the source of process heat. Concentrated solar radiation can supply a large amount of thermal energy to endothermic reactions at temperatures exceeding 2000 K. Another potential for C02 emission reduction exists as well. Thermodynamically, the total amount of energy required for metal production at any given temperature is the enthalpy change of the reaction, AH. Of this total, an amount equal to the Gibbs free energy AG must be supplied as high quality energy in the form of electrical work or by using a reducing agent. Many conventional metallurgical electrolytic processes and reducing furnaces are unable to add only the thermodynamically required electricaVchemical energy due to process inefficiencies. Electrical work in excess of AG for the reaction may be used to supply process heat, or excess chemical reducing agent burned to supply process heat. Besides the thermodynamic and economic drawback, this inefficiency results in excess C02 emissions derived from the combustion of fossil fuels. With these practices, energy becomes an important cost element of the metal produced. Highly-concentrated solar energy has the demonstrated potential to separate these two forms of process energies, allowing the addition of only the thermodynamically required high-quality energy while high-temperature solar process heat is provided to the reactor. Examples of metal oxide reduction processes that have been studied experimentally in solar furnaces include the production of Fe, Al, AI/Si alloy, Mg, Zn, Tic, Sic, CaC2, TIN, Si3N4, and AIN by carbothermic reduction of their oxides, and the high-temperature solar- electrothermal reduction of ZnO.

The Cadia Hill concentrator at Newcrest’s Cadia Operations has undergone several modifications and upgrades to treat an increased throughput rate of harder ore from the Cadia East block cave mine.Subsequent to the commissioning of the expanded circuit, the flotation cleaner block has undergone a systematic optimisation programme tackling all facets of circuit operation. The Clem Jones Tunnel (formally known as the North-South Bypass Tunnel), a A$2.88 billion road tunnel project in Brisbane, Queensland, was successfully completed almost seven months ahead of schedule. The project included two parallel 4.7 km long road tunnels, 740 m of intermediate roadway access ramps and two auxiliary ventilation tunnels. The tunnels incorporate intelligent tunnel systems, best practice fire and life safety standards and typical civil tunnel elements.Over the duration of the project the Parsons Brinckerhoff (PB) and AECOM (formally Maunsell) design joint venture (MPB) were Lead Designers to the Leighton Contractors and Baulderstone Bilfinger Berger Joint Venture (LBBJV). Construction of the toll road commenced in September 2006 and was completed in March 2010, with the tunnel opening then. Contributing to the success of this project was the continued support the lead designers gave throughout the construction period.This paper will focus on some of the structural elements that contributed to the success of the project – in particular the cable tunnel structure, a small precast, culvert shaped element under the pavement of the mainline tunnel, and the fit-out of the Gibbon Street shaft which were designed to be constructed in a combination of precast and in situ concrete.The cable tunnel was incorporated early in the design phase and runs the length of much of the tunnel. This paper will outline the challenges faced by the designers with implementing this system which provided significant construction advantages, among which were being able to install a separate ventilation duct during construction and to start fitting out the mechanical and electrical conduits and drainage system while tunnelling was still underway.The Gibbon Street shaft had a length and width of 20 m by 40 m and an overall depth of 38 m. A 20 m high structure of precast and in situ concrete was constructed in the base to accommodate mechanical and electrical equipment and provide a take-off access for the southern ventilation tunnel. The construction purpose for this structure was to provide a junction between the tunnel boring machine (TBM) and the roadheader-style tunnels, a staging platform for commencing the roadheader tunnelling, and a platform where the TBMs could be dismantled and removed.The design was assessed and reviewed many times throughout the construction process to address the needs of each of these stages. Innovative use of precast concrete was used to minimise construction time.Additionally, the designers provided support to the construction team from the time of design completion through to the tunnel opening. This meant that the changes to the design and adjustment of construction loadings could also be assessed. The fi nal outcome resulted in an efficient construction sequence and a project that has provided an excellent outcome for the client, stakeholders and community.

It is now generally agreed that most metals have been brought to the surface of the earth by volcanic agencies. The question as to how these metals came from the volcanic matrix to the mineral deposit has been often discussed. It might be useful to give more serious consideration to the ultimate origin of the volcanic material. It is possible that some light might thus be shed on the persistent associations of some metals with certain particular kinds of rocks. For example, the very general association of gold with acid types of igneous rocks, of tin with granites or quartz-felsites, of certain types of deep-seated copper-deposits with magnesian eruptives, and so on. One interesting question is as to whether the metals brought near the surface by volcanic agencies appear here for the first time, or whether they came from the central core of the earth. The interior of the earth is, without doubt, much more highly metallic than the crust, and so the core is often thought to be the origin of many of the metals which are uncovered by man. The Differentiation Theory.—Although a great many theories bearing upon these matters have been discussed,' the only one now considered as worthy of much consideration among American geologists is the " Theory of Differentiation of Igneous Magmas."2 According to this theory, lakes of molten magma are supposed to exist very far down beneath the earth's surface. In these lakes a process of differentiation is supposed to be going on whereby the liquid magma is split up into two or more liquid phases. Each of these phases is supposed to take with it the metallic constituents for which it has the greatest affinity.

People in economically developed societies demonstrate inherent human care for Earth and want to stop pollution. Yet efforts to clean Earth seem bogged in confusion from wildly contradictory and alarmist predictions of æclimate crisisÆ. Supposed experts openly disagree yet weÆre told thereÆs universal agreement humans are causing æthe end of life as we know itÆ. The turmoil combines with peopleÆs feelings of fear, guilt, anger, hopelessness and even resignation and apathy to trigger æclimate alarmÆ. The paper enables people to rediscover clarity, hope and support for Earth by understanding how climate alarm and confusion were created and how they actually increase pollution. Many people seem to think global warming is as serious as pollution and worry that questioning alarm will enable pollution. Yet theyÆre different. We need be even more concerned about climate alarm because history shows repeatedly that when buried by ignorance and panic real problems grow overwhelming. Environmental credibility is endangered by confused politicians and sensationalist media. When weÆre willing to re-evaluate what weÆve been told we replace fear and confusion with facts and freedom to identify opportunities. Combining this with practical understanding of human behaviour and leadership enables opportunities to be identified and action taken. The paper shows how confident, informed leadership leads and supports higher productivity and effective care for the natural environment.

Climate and hydrology data are required during all phases of mining projects, including impact assessment, mine planning and design, operational water management and mine closure and reclamation design. In the Canadian north, data sources are spatially sparse and often short-term in nature, and design parameters are often estimated based on data collected at sites far distant. Confidence in such data can be increased by verification or modification using data collected during properly implemented baseline and operational monitoring programs. A data set that accurately reflects conditions at the project is more readily accepted by regulatory agencies during the permitting process, and allows development of more effective and economic water management, mitigation measures and compensation. Data requirements and collection methods for developing an adequate data set for mine development are reviewed. These are illustrated using examples from oil sands, diamond and metal mines in the Canadian north.

This paper identifies potential technologies for Carbon dioxide abatement from the mining and metal industry with special reference to the Aluminium industry. Mine reclamation could contribute to this effort to successfully reach the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction commitments for a nation. An overview of GHG production by the mining and metal industry together with a review of principles used to set the context in which specific options for GHG reduction are described. Options for GHG reduction in the mining and metal industry include reforestation, Addition of soil amendments or neutralizing agents, CO2 capture and storage, initiatives towards energy reduction, waste heat recovery and alternative energy use. An analysis and quantification of the potential GHG reduction of potential carbon sinks and sequestration options for the mining and metal industry are provided. Cost estimates for different options are provided. The paper also identifies sources that could fund research regarding GHG reduction options. The paper concludes with recommendations.

A new framework that collates and interprets pre-existing data to assess vulnerability and ultimately plan to avoid or minimise flood-related risk to infrastructure, people, downtime, environment and revenue has been developed. The æClimate Related Adaptation from Terrain Evaluation ResultsÆ (CRATER) method tested at a coal mine in Queensland, provides semi-quantitative information to assist decision makers when designating investment for minimising vulnerability of mining operations to climate. Here we present the processes involved in this three-step approach that uses pre-existing spatial data of the mine site and local knowledge to build a set of visual tools to assist decision-making. The first step of the process is performing multi-criteria evaluation (MCE) within a geographic information system (GIS) on ranked natural conditions at the mine, such as elevation, slope, drainage, soil and vegetation, which is performed to identify critical flood areas. Secondly, a fault-tree analysis identifies how impact can occur and what options there are for impact reduction. Finally, a resource assessment of the mineÆs capacity to adapt reduces the adaptation options to those most suited to the mine. The results are confidential, but for the purpose of introducing the methodology, we present simplified results, particularly of steps 2 and 3. CRATER can also be used for future æwhat-ifÆ flooding scenarios to identify the most suitable locations for roads, buildings or other critical infrastructure. The methodology is transferable to any mine, series of mines or locations along the mining value chain that have sufficient data, providing a practical decision-making tool to identify æno-regretsÆ actions that not only could reduce downtime after or during an event, but in some cases may enhance production between extreme events. The global warming and the associated changes in climate variability would increase the risk to the mining industry in both magnitude and frequency. Consequently, extreme climate conditions would disturb the infrastructure, equipment and mine closure strategies in areas that have not consider this potential impact. To cope with these climate-associated risks is critical to understand the exposure and vulnerability with a local perspective. Having a clear knowledge of the current climate risks, the vulnerability of species, ecosystems, and ecological processes in the watershed where the mining operations are is essential to inform how patterns of risks and potential benefits are shifting due to climate change.

Closure cost estimates may be generated at any stage of a mining operationÆs life; commencing with the initial prefeasibility studies and continuing through to the final decommissioning cost estimates. However, not all mine closure cost estimates are necessarily the same. Cost estimates will vary depending on the purpose for which they are prepared, the organisations requiring or undertaking the estimate and the stage of the mining operation. Different organisations can legitimately arrive at disparate cost estimates for closing the same mine because the organisations have different reasons for requiring the estimates. Another, equally valid, reason for potentially wide variations in cost estimates by different organisations on the same mine site is the different definitions of æclosure costsÆ used by different estimators. This paper considers the different approaches by different organisations including operating companies, government authorities and financial organisations and uses a hypothetical example based on practical experience to illustrate some of these differences in estimation methods.The paper suggest that a more consistent approach to closure cost estimating in the Australian mining industry would assist mining companies, governments, the accounting industry and the broader community to better understand this complex component of mine planning. As the first wave of precious metal heap leach closures and reclamation projects occur, a number of companies are being hit with costly surprises. While this paper refers specifically to U.S precious metal projects, it could be conceptually directed at copper leach operations and acid rock drainage (ARD) problems on an international basis. ARD is Mother Nature's version of heap leaching, only with different products and timing. Although many precious metal deposits tend to be small in comparison with some base metals systems (porphyry copper deposits), adjacent or nearby discoveries have extended the operating lives of numerous precious metal mines. Now, depleted reserves, several years of relatively depressed precious metals prices and some properties with technical difficulties have resulted in numerous mine closures. As a result, our industry is getting a diverse and comprehensive initial look at mine closure and final reclamation. The situation has been further complicated by the evolutionary trend in regulations and their enforcement and increasing public and political awareness of all environmental issues. Concurrent (proactive) vs. deferred (reactive) reclamation and a realistic early appraisal of ultimate reclamation and closure requirements, not just regulatory compliance, need to be a part of project design. The U.S. and Canada are the current fertile testing grounds and have set the design, regulation and closure standards for the next wave of operations in Latin America, the CIS (?), etc.

In recent times, with the global mining industry’s focus on sustainable development there has been a significant focus on mine closure and rehabilitation performance and reporting through the development of the International Council on Mining Metals (ICMM), the Global Reporting Initiative and the Equator Principles. In addition, financial reporting obligations under International Financial Reporting Standards and the Sarbanes Oxley Act (2002) have also led to better understanding and improvements with industry closure performance, liability management and reporting.Under these sustainable development principles and financial reporting obligations, mining companies are required to consider mine closure planning and associated cost estimates across all life cycle phases of the mine. Internal processes have been developed within mining companies to better understand their closure liabilities and obligations and likely costs and cost estimating processes are generally developed for long-term life-of-mine (asset) planning and budgeting, financial reporting for corporate balance sheet provisioning purposes, and regulator reporting for environmental bonding and financial assurances.These days mining companies need to plan for, prepare and actually mine for closure right from the start of a project. This means that their closure and rehabilitation liabilities throughout each stage of the mine life cycle phases must be understood, planned for, managed and controlled.So how is the industry performing? This chapter presents a successful approach for achieving mine entry stability at the Cane Creek potash mine by the utilization of closure measurements. The mine is located in southeastern Utah (Fig. l). Mining is being conducted at depths in excess of 3000 ft under structurally complex geologic conditions typical of the Paradox salt basin. The closure measurement systems described have definite application for determining relative entry stability in other nonelastic rocks which are similar in behavior to potash. Similar types of closure measurements have been taken in various underground openings throughout the United States, Canada, arid Europe. Application of this closure data has previously met with varying degrees of success as a tool for design of under- ground openings in both elastic and nonelastic media.1-32 Closure measurements can be made easily and economically and they provide a practical solutiori to a practical problem. They are in-situ measurements which do not necessarily require laboratory correlation. Simple closure measurements have special significance in potash because "steady-state" ' closure rate, or creep, of the entries is measured. These closure rates can be utilized because nonelastic media such as potash will never achieve absolute stability around a mine entry. The potash will tend to creep or deform until all entries are closed and the overburden stress is redistributed over what was previously the mine area. The MMG Century mine, which is the largest zinc/lead mine in Australia, began operating in 1999 and ceased mining from the open pit in July 2015, with processing completed in early 2016. Closure plans were developed from 2006, and detailed planning for closure commenced in early 2011 with the appointment of a dedicated closure planning resource. The site will continue to be managed during the active and passive closure phases to complete rehabilitation commitments and demonstrate that closure completion criteria have been achieved.Completion of the mining/processing phase of the project provides an opportunity to reflect on successes, missed opportunities and lessons learnt with respect to planning and execution of mine closure. This paper highlights examples of success at Century and also identifies key learnings and areas for improvement in progressive closure outcomes. Specific examples examine mine planning and execution involving bulk movement of waste rock and construction of permanent waste encapsulation landforms. The paper also provides recommendations for other sites that are planning for closure.Decisions made during the operational phase of the project life can result in a significant increase in closure liability and reduce the likelihood of achieving lease relinquishment.
