PURPOSE: Evaluate practical technological advances in level-dependent hearing protectors and inexpensive personal acoustic monitors. RESEARCH SUMMARY: The results of previous NIOSH research show that miners develop hearing loss much more quickly than nonoccupationally noise-exposed individuals and that miners experience a greater severity of hearing loss than would be expected for nonoccupational noise-exposed persons of the same age and gender. Using hearing thresholds at 4,000 Hz as an indicator, coal miners experience hearing loss 2.5 to 3 times greater than would be expected for persons not exposed to occupational noise. At age 50, 90% of coal miners and 49% of metal/nonmetal miners were found to have a hearing impairment. In comparison, only 9% of a nonoccupationally exposed control group had a hearing impairment at age 50. There are numerous barriers to the prevention of hearing loss among miners. In an effort to overcome some of these obstacles, this work was initiated to evaluate practical technological advances in level-dependent hearing protectors and inexpensive personal acoustic monitors. Experiments will involve analysis of this new technology under both laboratory and field conditions. Laboratory components will consist of controlled studies using an anthropometrically correct test fixture as well as human subjects to evaluate the adequacy/effectiveness of various hearing protective devices. Electroacoustical performance testing of new noise monitors will also be conducted in a laboratory setting. Subsequent field studies will determine the actual usefulness and practicality of the personal protective/monitoring equipment as used in different mining situations. It is anticipated that increased on-the-spot awareness of hazardous noise levels and the availability of better-suited hearing protectors will provide a degree of protection beyond what is currently attained in different mining environments. Therefore, the intent of this project is to identify and adapt new acoustical technologies and products that have a direct application to individual mine workers. With increased knowledge of these technological advances, a greater demand for similar devices will likely occur, which, in turn, will lead to a better understanding and awareness of hearing loss prevention methods throughout the mining community. The ultimate goal is for widespread integration of useful hearing loss prevention products and devices into the daily routines of miners

"INCRAMUTE alloy (nominally 45Mn-53Cu-2Al wt. %) has a specific damping capacity as high as 0.4, through a solid-solution and aging treatment. The damping behavior of the alloy is highly temperature-dependent and shows a peak near room temperature. The inadequate strength in the high damping condition restrains the practical application of the alloy, as structural components. Ferromagnetic MnB particles are dispersed in the alloy during induction remelting the matrix alloy in an argon atmosphere. Surface modification of the MnB particles by mechanical alloying (MA) and suitable control of the addition process cause a homogeneous distribution of MnB particles in the alloy. In the composite containing 2 wt. % MnB particles, temperature dependence of damping capacity is improved, and higher damping capacity is still retained in the temperatures over 60 °C. Meanwhile, the Young's modulus and tensile strength were also increased by about 20%. The roles of the MnB particles in improving both damping behavior and mechanical properties were also discussed.IntroductionMany viscoelastic materials, such as rubbers, polymers and plastics, have the superior ability to damp vibration and noise. However, in the applications as structural materials the high damping capacities of materials are pursued upon the satisfactory mechanical properties, especially those at elevated temperatures. Damping alloys are finding more and more applications in structures where noise and vibration ·should be ·eliminated. Specific damping capacity (SDC), defined as the ratio of the energy dissipated to the maximum vibration energy stored per cycle, is usually used to evaluate the damping capacity of alloys. INCRAMUTE damping alloy, developed by the International Copper Research Association, Inc., has a nominal composition of 45Mn-53Cu-2Al in weight percent. The high damping· microstructure of this alloy is obtained through the solution treatment at 820 °C followed by a water quench and aging at 400°C for 10 hours followed by cooling to room temperature [1]. With the heat treatment, a SDC peak ·vs. temperature of as high as 0.4 was observed in the alloy at the strain amplitude of about 10-3 while a tensile strength of about 500MPa was sustained."

The history and milestones in the evolution of support systems utilised in the mass-mined chrysotile mines of Shabanie and King are discussed in detail. The use of block caving, false footwall or sublevel caving mining methods brings with it some major support problems, which are exacerbated, in our low rock strength mining environments. The paper discusses the various support elements and systems that have been used successfully or otherwise in these operations. Some predictions for the future of rock reinforcing in our ground conditions are highlighted, in relation to geomechanics, levels of mechanisation and production risk analysis.

Thermal Treatment Technology Division Albany Research Center, U.S. Dept. of Energy Oregon. This evaluation included a characterization study and direct smelting tests conducted in a bench-scale electric arc furnace (EAF). In contrast to other thermal treatment technologies considered for these wastes (i.e., fluidized bed combustion), direct smelting in the EAF can process 100% of the wastes without prior beneficiation, and utilizes solid oxidant additions (in this case iron ore) rather than air to oxidize the carbon. This solid oxidant addition is advantageous because it results in the production of several value-added furnace products. These products include cast iron resulting from the reduction of the iron oxides, baghouse dust containing virtually all of the zinc from the residues, and a clean (nonhazardous) slag product suitable for recycle as concrete aggregate or construction fill. Offgas from the smelting furnace also holds potential as fuel gas for cogeneration. The direct smelting tests conducted thus far were successful at producing the desired furnace products, exhibiting the potential for complete recycle of the waste pile. A cast iron product of comparable quality to conventional cast irons was produced, at nearly 80% iron recovery to the metal. The slag product was determined to be nonhazardous, based on the EPA TCLP. Lead and zinc partitioning to the dust product was greater than 99%. The material balance over the furnace indicates that for every ton of feed processed, 540 lb. of cast iron, 600 lb. of slag, and 150 lb. of dust would be produced. Energy consumption was roughly 1.10 kWxh/lb of feed material. Prior experience suggests that these figures measured in the bench-scale furnace would translate to 0040 to 0.50 kWxh/lb at the industrial-scale.

The Macraes Gold Project, operated by GRD Macraes Limited, engaged GRD Minproc Limited to assist with the evaluation of a pressure oxidation circuit, this being the key component of a recovery enhancement project. The initial study gave sufficient confidence in the process to enter into project execution. GRD Macraes Limited was the first company to license Newmont Mining Corporation's pressure oxidation technology, which aims to improve gold recovery from the carbonaceous sulfidic flotation concentrate. This paper outlines the fundamental chemistry of the process followed by a description of the plant that was ultimately installed. A summary of the commissioning is given together with an overview of the production results to date. The project ramp-up was rapid, with design temperature and throughput being achieved within days of hot commissioning. Gold recoveries have exceeded expectations, improving from around 70% prior to the installation of pressure oxidation to above 84%. The project has increased the nominal gold output at Macraes from 120,000 oz/y to 170,000 oz/y. On-going plant optimisation for process parameters is discussed, giving rise to flexibility in gold production, with key controlling parameters exceeding design.

This paper discusses the requirements for a successful simulation modelling study, and the steps involved in the modelling process. Advantages and disadvantages of simulation are described, and a case study highlights how not to go about it. Two other case studies, for a decline truck haulage and a block caving production operation, are used to illustrate the types of variables whose impact may be investigated. Typical results are presented to indicate the sorts of presentation styles the author has found useful for conveying study results to project sponsors. Standard spreadsheet charting techniques can be very useful in this respect, but the possibilities are limited only by the imagination of the study team.

This study examined the potential of mixing rotary kiln fines (RK fines), a waste product generated when limestone is converted to lime (CaO), with acid producing mine waste to provide 1) short-term mitigation by neutralizing acid produced by iron sulfide oxidation and 2) long-term mitigation by facilitating the passivation of iron sulfide mineral surfaces. Five loadings of RK fines were mixed with 75 g of Duluth Complex rock to produce neutralization potential (NP) added: acid potential (AP) quotients of 0,0.11,0.22,0.66 and 1.1. The mixtures were subjected to wet-dry cycling laboratory testing for 585 weeks. The rock alone produced acidic drainage, with pH decreasing below 4 after about 20 weeks of reaction and ultimately reaching the approximate range of 3.3 to 3.5; sulfate release did not decrease over time. The RK fines elevated pH and inhibited sulfate release for time periods which increased with the mass of RK fines present. The pH of drainage from the 0.11 quotient (NP added1AP) loading decreased below 6.0 after 75 weeks of dissolution and decreased to 3.6 after 117 weeks, at which time the reactor was terminated. The duplicate 0.22 quotient loadings of RK fines decreased below 6.0 after 95 and 170 weeks. The former was terminated after 117 weeks, and the latter reached a minimum pH of 2.8 after 512 weeks. Drainage pH from the 0.66 quotient decreased below 6 after 581 weeks. For the drainages which acidified, the cumulative calcium release prior to pH decreasing below 6.0 was 92 to 103 percent of that initially present as calcium carbonateloxide in the RK fines. The pH of drainage from the 1.1 quotient typically remained above 8.0 throughout the period of record. Sulfate concentrations in the drainages decreased while the neutralizing fraction of the RK fines was present, but increased after this fraction was depleted.

"The nonferrous production industry has gone through a remarkable transformation in recent years in terms of developing and adopting new technologies. Technology innovations have largely been driven by the need for greatly improved environmental protection in addition to increased productivity. One of the most notable aspects of the new technologies is their ability to reduce the emission of sulfur and other pollutants to extremely low levels.The current industry trends towards more environmentally friendly technologies are bringing about additional benefits of developing more efficient, technically advanced, and continuous processes in closed reactor vessels. Key aspects of these modem trends include the use of increased oxygen enrichment in the process gas, better process control, reduced manpower requirements, and plant operations with more skilled personnel.Computer simulation and modeling of complex processes have become more reliable, realistic, and thus increasingly useful in metal production. Some of the notable examples are reviewed.Finally, the need and advantages for value-added production in the nonferrous industry are discussed.I. IntroductionMost recently commissioned technologies for nonferrous metals production have been developed largely in response to environmental concerns. One of the most remarkable improvements made by the nonferrous industry in the last decade has been the rapid increase in sulfur capture. Before the start of the last decade, 90% capture of sulfur was considered good. Since then, strict emission regulations have become the norm in advanced societies, although smelters in many parts of the world still operate with limited pollution control. Other emissions and discharges have also been substantially reduced, resulting in much improved working conditions and worker hygiene in addition to the overall environmental protection. The development of the more environmentally friendly technologies has accompanied other advantageous advances made in the nonferrous industry, i.e., the trend towards more gas-tight, continuous processes and larger plants. This has increased the competitive edge enjoyed by the industry in the industrial countries, offsetting the higher costs of labor and pollution abatement that they have to overcome in those countries. Experience has shown that clean technology often leads to a profitable business, because its adoption forces the concomitant advancement of related technologies in addition to the avoidance of penalties imposed by the public on pollution-prone industries. Needless to say, there are other driving forces for new technologies such as reduction of operating and capital costs, improved product quality, and energy considerations in terms of reduced consumption and utilization of readily available sources."

"LocationThe Gibraltar mine is located in central British Columbia (NTS 93B/9W), 362 km north of Vancouver. Access is provided by 20 km of paved road from McLeese Lake, which lies 45 km north of Williams Lake on Highway 97. Latitude and longitude of the mine are 52° 30' and 122° 16', respectively.The total area of the McLeese Lake site is approximately 1700 ha (4200 acres). This includes the orebodies, dumps, surface drainage collection system, plant site, roads and tailings ponds.Brief Description of OperationOre is mined by open pit methods and is concentrated using conventional crushing, grinding and flotation processes. Copper and molybdenum flotation occurs at an average rate of 40 000 tons per day. Tailing is discharged to an impoundment area and the water recycled as process water. Additional copper is extracted from the waste dumps using sulphuric acid as a leach solution followed by solvent extraction and electrowinning.HistoryExploration by Gibraltar began in 1964, continuing until late 1970, at which time it was announced that the property would go into production. Construction started in early 1971, with initial production in March 1972. Target capacity of 30 000 tons per day was achieved by the end of March and is currently at 40 000 tons per day.Ore reserves as of January 1, 1998 were 184 384 000 tons grading 0.31% Cu and 0.010% MoS2."

"A well-considered composite of ZA-27 reinforced with weight percentage 0, 2, 4, and 6% of alwninite particulate has been made by compocasting technique. The elastic properties of ZA- 27 /alwniniute particulate composite were determined by using U1M. The results showed that the modulus of elasticity and UTS of the composite gradually increases with increase in the wt.% of reinforcement. However, the overall ductility decreased monotonically with an increase in reinforcement. The results of these tests· as well as the predictions of several model~ for composite strengthening available in the literature were compared with experimental results. Mining of the Agnew nickel deposit commenced in 1970 using a variety of underground mining methods, though with mixed success due to the difficult ground conditions. WMC Resources Ltd acquired the operation in 1989, and commenced nickel production with an open pit. In 1995 all production reverted to the rejuvenated underground mine, using exclusively SLC (sublevel caving) methods. Currently the mine produces 1.4 Mt per annum, at an average grade of 1.74 per cent Ni. Underground mining of the Perseverance orebody has always presented significant challenges due to the difficult ground conditions in the weak and altered ultramafic rocks. The range of problems include areas of swelling minerals, intense and extremely weak shear zones, relatively high in situ stress, and in other areas very brittle rocks. Under these conditions rock mechanics input has been and remains a critical element of the mining strategy. Severe ground behaviour difficulties down to a depth of 500 m below surface prompted a review of the mining strategy for the large disseminated nickel orebody, including evaluation of alternative mining methods. However, sublevel caving was ultimately selected as the preferred method, and a re-design of the SLC cross-cut layout followed. A selection of rock mechanics investigations of interest are described, including complex virgin stress measurements, detailed ground behaviour monitoring, and the use of non-linear stress analyses to re-design the mine layout. Subsequent ground behaviour, support design and production scheduling are also described.

The Pseudo Static Pile Load Test, PLT, is a rapid method for determining pile capacity. Pile design is usually based on theoretical calculations of ultimate load capacity using soil data from a field investigation. The pile capacity is confirmed during construction by analysis of blow counts using dynamic formulae, dynamic pile monitoring, and load testing. Load testing is the most direct and reliable method of determining the actual capacity of a pile. Conventional load testing procedures, however, are time consuming and expensive. A typical load test requires installation of two to four reaction piles, construction of a high-capacity steel test frame, hydraulic jacks, and dial gauges, and will typically take one to three days per pile. Costs for load tests range from $10,000 to $20,000 per test. The Pile Load Test machine features a 25-tonne weight mounted on a mobile test frame. PLT load tests can be performed in a matter of minutes once the equipment has been mobilized to the site. This paper examines three test sites where the PLT test method was used and compares the results to conventional load test results and theoretical capacity calculations.

Placer Dome is learning from experience in Latin America, Asia and Africa, as well as in North America, that contributing effectively to sustainable human progress in the areas of its operations presents unending challenges to think creatively, communicate effectively and remain culturally sensitive. People must be better off in terms of their economic circumstances, their social conditions and the quality of their natural environment not only during the life of the mines, but after mines close. Stakeholders, all those who are directly or indirectly affected by a mining project, should be able to participate in decisions which affect them. The development of sustainability strategies, the monitoring of sustainability performance and the implementation of sustainability programs are best done in partnerships with governments, communities, nongovernmental organizations and multilateral development institutions. Ultimately, the success, if not the survival of mining, will depend on our ability to get the sustainability equation correct.

Following the Busang fiasco, more detailed guidelines were appended to the latest revision of the JORC Code released in September 1999 (JORC, 1999). Although the definitions and terminology essentially remained unchanged, the additional information in the guidelines has highlighted a number of issues for consideration by geologists undertaking computer-based resource estimations. The three main issues are:Data Integrity û details such as drilling and logging techniques, sampling procedures, assay tests, site visits, data recording and aggregation methods need to be considered. Geological Interpretation û is the Competent Person applying the appropriate software interpretation to the deposit in accordance with the regional setting. Are the correct computer-based tools being applied and are they producing the desired result (without compromise) to the satisfaction of the Competent Person? Modelling Technique û the importance of the relevant experience of the Competent Person not only in regard to the geology, but also with respect to the modelling algorithms and resource calculation methods of the computer software system involved. At the end of the day, it is essential that the Competent Person undertake a reality check on the resource estimation itself. They should also check that the borehole spacing is in accordance with the level of continuity for each critical parameter (such as structure, grade, impurities, etc) for which the resources are categorised.

In June 1996, the United Nations International Seabed Authority opened shop in Kingston, Jamaica as an autonomous international organization charged with the administration of seabed mineral developments in all areas beyond national jurisdictions. The Authority is a consequence of the 16 November, 1994 entry into force of the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and the 1994 Agreement relating to the Implementation of Part XI of UNCLOS. The total seabed area included within the Authority?s purview has yet to be assessed accurately, but clearly constitutes the largest single jurisdiction on the planet. The Authority is governed by legislative bodies called the Assembly and the Council and an administration called the Secretariat. The Assembly includes representatives of the 132 member states which are currently parties both to UNCLOS and to the 1994 Agreement. These member states directly fund the operations of the Secretariat. They include most of the world?s developed nations, island nations, and others among the 188 independent countries which are members of the United Nations. Notably absent are the United States and Canada, which are the only developed coastal states not represented. The Council is a 36-member subset of the Assembly representatives selected through a somewhat involved process designed to achieve a balanced representation of the specific interests of the members. Ultimate responsibility for the Authority?s actions resides in the Assembly, but most initiatives originate in the Council. Also included in the Authority are two subsidiary advisory bodies, the Finance Committee, which reviews the Secretariat?s budget, and the Legal and Technical Commission, which evaluates claims and drafts technical regulations. The Secretariat itself includes a staff of about 30, including 15 highly qualified and competent attorneys, accountants, engineers, and scientists. "There have been a pioneering efforts over the last forty years in the development of metal matrix composites (MMCs) as a new engineering materials, having improved properties, light weight characteristics and competitive costs compared to traditional materials. Following recent advancements in casting technology and the use of melt stirring device by foundries, discontinuously reinforced MMCs where prominent alloys are reinforced with particulates or short fibres and the being employed ·in the production of castings targeted for automotive and aerospace application.The ZA-27 alloy has a high strength compared to zinc or alluminium alloys with a lower melting temperature. The main objective of the present research is to study the effect of quartz particles on the mechanical behaviour of ZA-27 alloy composites. The results showed that the ultimate tensile strength, hardness, Young's modulus of the composite gradually increased with increase in the weight percentage of the quartz reinforcement. Close circuiting autogenous and semi-autogenous mills is an energy efficient way of grinding and a number of operations have utilised this in the design of their comminution circuits. Owing to the large flow of slurry through the mill that results from operating this way the grates and pulp lifters have to be designed to cope. However, the literature has little or no information on how grate and pulp lifter size and design are related to their ability to remove slurry from the mill. Over the last few years the JKMRC has been researching this area and has developed relationships between grate/pulp lifter design and flowrate capacity. At the same time it has determined the major causes of pulp lifter inefficiency and a solution to preventing this inefficiency (the Twin Chamber Pulp Lifter). This paper describes the models that have been developed through this program and uses industrial scale data to illustrate their accuracy. Results from the industrial trials of the Twin Chamber Pulp Lifter are also presented.

Power ultrasound may be used in a number of ways to enhance the processing of minerals. It is both technically and commercially feasible to apply ultrasound to leaching processes in order to enhance the removal of contaminating minerals, or the rate and ultimate recovery of valuable mineral. When applied to the production of synthetic rutile from reduced ilmenite produced by the Becher process, its use proved beneficial to both the aeration and the final acid leach process. The enhanced performance is achieved through the very localised high energy release at the mineral surface from the collapse of cavitation bubbles produced by power ultrasound. This gives rise to two effects: initially, the rapid cleaning of mineral surfaces û of oxidation products and coatings of fine adhering gangue minerals û and the attenuation of the boundary layer at the mineral surface during leaching, which allows fresh leachant to contact the surface more readily.

"IntroductionDuring 1994, Barrick Gold Corporation, or American Barrick at that period, acquired Lac Minerals Ltd. properties. One of them was the Bousquet Complex. The Bousquet Complex is divided into three distinct sites: one mine (Bousquet 2), one mill (Est-Malartic Division) and one analytical chemistry laboratory (Les Terrains auriferes).The Bousquet 2 orebody was discovered in 1986. An extensive drilling program was initiated during 1987. Its purpose was to define the orebody extent. At the end of 1997, gold production from Bousquet 2 mine reached 1 290 000 oz of gold from a cumulative tonnage processed of 4 175 000 M t.From 1980 to 1990, the Est-Malartic mill was used for the treatment of ore from the following mines: Bousquet 1, Doyon, Francoeur (Richmont mines), Buckshot and 1-20 stope. At present, the mill receives ore from the Bousquet 2 mine.HistoryThe Est-Malartic mill is located close to the town of Malartic in northwestern Quebec. The mill has been in production since the mid-1930s processing mainly clean, free mill gold ore. Active mining from the Est-Malartic mine ceased in 1979 and the mill was switched to custom processing of ore from La Mine Doyon located some 45 km to the west. This custom processing arrangement continued until 1987 when the expanded mill at Doyon became available to process all of the Doyon production. In 1987, Lac Minerals commenced development of a second mine at the Bousquet site located 40 km west of Malartic. This mine, Bousquet 2, is the down dip extension of the La Ronde mine developed by Agnico Eagle. During pre-feasibility evaluations, it was determined that it would be economically more attractive to modify the existing Est-Malartic mill than building a new facility on site. The Est-Malartic mill modifications for processing the high-copper/gold ore from the Bousquet 2 mine began in late 1989 and new circuits were commissioned in mid-1990. Modifications included the addition of both gravity and flotation concentration circuits to recover coarse, free gold and the copper. The existing leaching circuit continued to operate on the copper flotation tailings with some minor modifications to the solution handling systems. A S02/Air cyanide destruction circuit was also added at that time."

"Drilling and blasting are fundamental operations in the mining cycle and constitute an important component of the mining costs. Problems associated with improper drilling and blasting practices can create losses of several millions of dollars per year. For this reason, a Blasting Technology program was initiated in 1984 at the Noranda Technology Centre (NTC). In this paper, advances made at NTC in drill and blast technology are reviewed. Impacts of drilling and basting for Noranda are assessed in terms of dilution and ore losses. Future challenges are addressed.
