A study was initiated to examine the ways in which a number of foreign countries classify and regulate metal/non-metal mines which experience problems due to naturally-occurring flammable gases. Twenty countries were selected for study, and useful information was obtained from sixteen of these. Nine countries were visited (five of them twice) to hold meetings with representatives of government mine regulatory agencies and mine operators, and to visit mines encountering methane and other gases (carbon dioxide, nitrogen). In the later stages of the study seven gassy metal/non-metal mines in the United States were visited so as to provide a basis for comparison, and hence the evaluation of both the U.S. and foreign gassy mine regulations. In addition to obtaining copies of the mining laws and regulations of a number of foreign countries, nine foreign gassy mines, and the seven in the United States were documented in as much detail as possible. All this information is presented, along with appropriate conclusions and appendices. The study took two years and three months to complete.

INTRODUCTION Approximately two years have elapsed since the first summary of the Grizzly Gulch Tailings Disposal Project was presented (1). Since that time, various physical modifications and additions to the existing treatment system have transpired. Further, Homestake and the entire mining industry have been impacted severely by additional modifications and additions concerning regulatory reform aimed at total disciplinary permitting and hazardous waste management. The following paper summarizes the past accomplishments relating to the Grizzly Gulch Tailings Disposal Project, correlating these accomplishments with future plans that are being developed to comply with regulations and to continue Homestake's commitment to environmental protection. The famous Homestake Gold Mine, located in Lead, South Dakota, has been operating in the Black Hills region for over a century, approximately 12 years before the south half of Dakota Territory was admitted to the Union as the State of South Dakota (2). During the 104 years of operational development, Homestake's Gold Mine, as well as the entire mining industry, have been influenced by numerous governmental regulations dating back to the Refuse Act of 1899 which regulated the deposit of debris from mines and stamp works. The enactment of the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 may be thought of as the beginning of a long line of unplanned steps to deal with the many concerns of matters pertaining to the environment. Environmental awareness continued into the 1970’s, in which the Clean Air Act, Federal Water Pollution Control Act, Safe Drinking Water Act, Toxic Substances Control Act, and the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), to name a few, surfaced.

The Rio Blanco Oil Shale Company completed a modified in situ oil shale retorting demonstration at its Tract C-a Lease in the Piceance Creek Basin of northwestern Colorado during the spring of 1982. This demonstration was the first MIS project with shafts rather than adits for access to the mining operation, and it involved several potential hazards which required that particular attention be paid to mine ventilation. Methane was first encountered during shaft sinking and ultimately resulted in the mine being classified gassy by MSHA. Secondly, we encountered hydrogen sulfide in association with the ground water, and this proved to be a more persistent problem than did the methane. Thirdly, in order to burn the underground retorts, it was necessary to provide for potential leakage of retort gases and to obtain a modification to the MSHA standard which forbids fires under- ground. This modification had a significant effect on the ultimate ventilation procedures at Tract C-a. An extensive under- ground air monitoring program was included in the ventilation system.

Inspiration Consolidated Copper Company is currently mining in four pit areas; Live Oak, Red Hill, Thornton and Joe Bush Extension, near Globe, Arizona. Small satellite orebodies lying outside the main pits have been mined out in a series of small open pits. Major slope instability has affected production in every pit. Some consequences of the instability have been; (1) Serious interruption of mining plans, which resulted in deferred ore production, lost ore, reduced mining rates and increased stripping requirements. (2) Forced replacement of crushing facilities. (3) Serious effects on other production facilities. The introduction of a slope stability monitoring and control function as an integral part of mine planning has been successful in reducing the impact of these failures and will eventually result in economic pit design based on probabilistic slope analysis. This case history presents a brief review of the problems associated with slope instability at Inspiration's mines followed by a more detailed report on one specific failure area in the Thornton pit where the use of horizontal drain holes for slope stabilization appears to be successful. Relationships between slope movement rate, rainfall, and mining activity are shown.

The Florida phosphate industry currently produces more than 80 pct of the total U.S. marketable output of phosphate rock. Because phosphate is one of three principal nutrients used in formulating a complete fertilizer, it is imperative that an uninterrupted supply of this material be available to meet the agricultural requirements of the United States while maintaining a viable phosphate industry which is competitive in world markets. As a result of an evaluation made by the Bureau of Mines, five areas were identified that affect the overall production and projected growth of the phosphate industry in Florida. These areas relate to the technological ability of the industry to comply with environmental regulations and performance standards by using the best available technology. The most significant technical problem facing the industry is the management of the clay fraction rejected during the beneficiation of phosphate ores. Other areas of concern are environmental restrictions and regulatory requirements, issues associated with mining and reclamation of wetlands, reclamation of other disturbed lands, and consumptive water use. Each of these areas is reviewed, with major emphasis placed on the current state-of-the-art processes for treatment and management of phosphatic clays.

This paper discusses the subject of "Improving Contracting Methods" from the owners point of view, particularly the public. An overview is given of the work of the U.S. National Committee on Tunneling Technology and some apparent results of the implementation of these recommendations or lack thereof. Selected recommendations that are not being implemented are discussed as to the the desirability and the possible impact of their implementation. Impediments to acceptance of the recommendations are identified and solutions proposed. The difference in the flexibility, attitudes and approaches of owners, public, quasi-public and private, toward improving contracting methods are discussed. Particular emphasis is given to the fact that the onus to improve is on the owner because they usually develop the contractual language or at least have the final decision on its content and are or should be an equal party to the contract during its administration.

Ground support at the Thompson Mine emphasizes scaling, rock bolting and wire mesh screening on the backs and walls of all underground stoping and development areas and also full column grouted cable bolting in the bulk mining areas. This paper describes the equipment for the point anchored rock bolts as well as the full column cable bolts. Modifications in design and testing of all components and procedures has ensured a safe and efficient method of ground support for the mining conditions existing at the Thompson Mine.

Within the Pofadder district of Namaqualand, South Africa, economically exploited deposits of bedded barite and zinc-lead-silver-copper sulfides occur in close proximity within highly metamorphosed mid-Proterozoic pre-tectonic para¬gneisses of the Namaqualand Metamorphic Complex (NMC) (figure i). The paragneisses belong to the Bushmanland Group (SACS, 1980) that comprises a relatively straight-forward regional sequence of basal leucogneisses, intermediate mica-sillimanite schists and glassy quartzites, and a mixed upper zone of banded iron formations (BIF), minor marbles, quartz muscovite schists and localised uppermost quartz-pebble conglomerates and amygdaloidal mafic gneisses (Joubert, 1974) (figure ii). The base metal and barite mineralisation occurs in close association with BIFs, generally above the glassy quartzites, although in some cases possibly below them. In the regional context, the Bushmanland Group paragneisses are, to the north, intercalated with and ultimately replaced by meta-volcanic sequences of talc-alkaline affinity (Reid, 1977) belonging to the Orange River Group (SACS, 1980). The metavolcanics are generally of acidic to intermediate composition and show evidence of subaerial formation from 'high altitude shield volcanism' with many acidic ashflow and welded tuff bands, mesocratic and lesser melanocratic lavas and some fanglomerates (Ritter, 1980). To the south and east, the schist/quartzite associations are initially intercalated with and eventually replaced by cordierite gneiss/metacarbonate/biotite gneiss associations of shallow marine affinity (Moore, 1980a). The Bushmanland Group paragneisses appear to represent sedimentary material in the extreme distal portions of a talc-alkaline volcanic environment adjacent to a shallow platform sea.

"Petro-Canada's project investigative and experimental underground work in the Galt coal seam at Kipp, Alberta included the construction of an emergency egress and ventilation raise from surface.The Galt coal seam is 206 m below the surface and covered by 8 m of shale, sandstone and clay beds of the Oldman Formation, 128 m of shale, bentonite beds and sandstone of the Bearpaw Formation, and 70 m of glacial till and basal gravel. Free water was encountered from sand lenses in the glacial till and the basal gravel.Excavation for the ventilation raise was a nominal 2 m diameter and it was lined with a welded, continuous, steel liner of 1.2 m 1.D.Excavation in the glacial till was carried out with a surface bucket drill rig combined with hand mining. Ground support in the glacial till consisted of liner plates and backfill grout. The Bearpaw and Oldman formations were excavated by employing standard raise boring techniques. The individual liner sections of the continuous steel liner were assembled on surface and the entire liner column was lowered into the raise by employing hydraulic lift climbers. The liner column was back-filled with concrete.IntroductionThe Lethbridge Coal Field comprises an area of approximately 1 165 square km in the vicinity of Lethbridge in southern Alberta. Pacific Petroleums Ltd. proposed in a Preliminary Disclosure in January 1979 ""to open an experimental mine prior to development of a producing underground mine with an initial rate of 540,000 tonnes per year"". A 2 900-hectare group of leases in the Kipp-Coalhurst area was selected as the primary target for the Kipp experimental mine. The scope of work for the experimental mine included the construction of an access shaft with production capabilities, the construction of a ventilation and emergency exit raise, drive-ages in coal to yield a bulk sample, gathering of geotechnical information and the testing of experimental mining methods."

The lawyer's role in underground construction, certainly for the past 20 years, has been principally that of the advocate in disputes resolution. Disputes in underground construction have been steadily increasing, making the lawyer a more prominent participant in the underground construction process. It is widely believed, however, that this is not a salutory state of affairs. It is our thesis that lawyers ought not be eliminated from the process, but rather that their role should be changed. They should function as prophylactics rather than as swords, i.e., they should be used to prevent or reduce disputes rather than, after the fact, to champion their clients' causes. a. Mr. Rubin is a partner in the New York law firm of Postner & Rubin. He has litigated and arbitrated numerous complex construction disputes. He has also participated in efforts to improve contracting practices on committees of ASCE and the National Academy of Engineering. b. INTRODUCTION Referring to a ground support system as a 'band-aid' borders on getting cute, but the application of cable slings in U.S. mining is somewhat analogous. Where problems in the roof or rib require additional support, the versatile cable sling is the answer in a variety of conditions. To fully understand how and why cable slings are used today we must briefly review their development history. Much of the thrust over the last five to seven years in ground support fixtures has been the development of hybrid systems. Taking the best of two or more existing roof bolt fixtures and marrying them into a new fixture which exhibits the good characteristics without the bad of the parent systems. Resin point anchored mechanical bolts, continuous threaded rebar bolts, and others have all be- come important fixtures in rock mass stabilization. HYBRID GROUND SUPPORT SYSTEM The cable sling system is also a hybrid, both in its parentage and in its ground support characteristics. See figure 1. On Nov. 4, 1981 A/S Sydvaranger's 1-kt/h (1,100-stph) wet-process, iron ore ball mill completed its first four months of uninterrupted, full-load operation in Kirkenes, Norway. This 6.5-m-diam (21-ft-diam) mill is driven by a gearless ring or wraparound 8.1-MW (10,860-hp) motor at 13.1 rpm-a first of a kind in this segment of industry. This article examines reasons for selecting this type of drive over more conventional schemes, lists specific advantages of such large mills, and describes the installation in Norway. History For almost a decade, good operating experiences have been gained with 28 gearless ring motor drives in the cement industry, driving 2.5 to 4-m-diam (8.2 to 13-ft-diam) tube mills with drive powers ranging from about 3-4 MW (4,000 - 8,000 hp). Why then did the mineral ore processing industry hesitate until 1980 to adopt this successful concept for similar applications on ball, semiautogenous, and autogenous mills? There are a number of good reasons in the eyes of conservative mill builders and operators, the most commonly cited ones are: • No operating experience in this segment of specialized industry. • More severe environmental conditions in the wet ore grinding process. • An indifferent attitude of mill builders and electric motor manufacturers towards new drive technologies. • Limited confidence in solid-state power supply systems, such as frequency converters of the required size. There have been and still are numerous problems associated with low-speed geared mill drives of any kind, especially with individual motor/gear sizes approaching or exceeding about 4 MW (5,360 hp). Every mill builder knows about them, but operators learn to accept them as inevitable. The Decision to Change Three things combined to break this technological stalemate: the courage and progressive spirit of one major iron ore processor in Scandinavia, the cooperation of three experienced manufacturers, and an unusual application problem that could not be solved by any conventional approach. The last factor was surely the decisive one, but the first one does not come as a surprise either. The Swedes near Kiruna and the Norwegians around Kirkenes are experienced ore miners and processors, and much credit goes to them for technological breakthroughs in the industry. At A/S Sydvaranger in Kirkenes, above the Polar circle at about the latitude of Alaska's northern tip, the existing grinding facilities, with a total of 14 100 to 240-t/h (110 to 264-stph) ball mills, can not be expanded. Nevertheless, to increase mill throughput, only installing a larger mill in place of an existing smaller one was a practical alternative. For this replacement, the owners set requirements that seemed impossible to meet: • The old 100-t/h (110-stph) ball mill should be replaced with a new ball mill with 10 times the rated throughput, without significantly impairing the operation of the remaining mills, and without significantly changing the mill building. • The new mill should have a variable-speed drive to ultimately optimize the grinding process by means of a closed-loop process¬computer-controlled grinding cycle, and to minimize the specific energy consumption. • Availability, efficiency, and life expectancy of all new components must be higher than those being replaced. • Inrush-current and harmonic loads on the rather weak electric supply line must be minimized to ensure safe plant operation. All old ball mills at A/S Sydvaranger are the geared type, using single synchronous and wound-rotor, slow-speed motors with ring-and-pinion gears. Operators are familiar with the limitations and problems associated with such drives, and they are aware that the following items become major concerns when drive powers are drastically increased: • Gears are subject to wear and tear, require frequent maintenance, and eventual replacement of major parts. • Gears are sensitive to misalignment, overload, and thermal distortion, limiting their useful life. • On dual or quadruple drives, load-sharing and torque oscillations between motors can be a major reason for concern. • At these speeds, ring-and-pinion gears reach their torque transmission capabilities altogether at around 4 MW (5,360 hp) per motor/pinion. To obtain the desired variable-speed performance of the new drive, the only practical and economical conventional solution would have been a frequency-controlled, low- or medium-speed dual motor drive with about 8 MW (10,720 hp) of power. This, however, was not feasible because of limited floor space. Therefore, bids were solicited for the alternative drive method, the gearless ring motor. General Considerations Why are such large mills considered? After all, one could avoid all the problems by simply staying with smaller mill unit sizes. Under competitive pressures of free markets, however, grinding efficiencies and specific energy consumption become key factors in selecting new equipment. In Oct. 1981, Ranchers Exploration and Development Corp. began producing silver bullion from the Escalante mine and mill complex, located in southwestern Utah. Current in-place reserves are estimated at 2.42 Mt (2.67 million st) of ore, containing about 936 t (33 million oz) of silver at an average grade of 428.5 g/t (12.5 oz/st). The vein-type deposit is being mined underground through a decline that is currently 864 m (2,835 ft) in length, but will ultimately be at least 1.5 km (5,100 ft) long. The mine is completely mechanized with rubber-tired equipment, and is producing 680 t/d (750 stpd) of ore, five days a week, or 177 kt/a (195,000 stpy). Additional capacity is available. The cyanide leach mill and associated refinery are presently producing 4.35 t/month (140,000 oz/month) of silver bullion-an an¬nual rate of about 52.25 t (1.68 million oz). With minor modifications, the mill can produce up to about 70 t/a (2.25 million oz/year), and expansion is currently underway. History The Escalante property is located 68 km (42 miles) west of Cedar City, UT, on the west side of the Escalante Valley, where the vein forms a gentle ridge in an area of low, rolling hills. For years, the vein has been the object of considerable exploration, but never became more than a sporadic producer, primarily due to low silver prices. Heber Holt of Enterprise, UT, staked the original four claims in 1896; they were patented in 1910. During the next 48 years, limited exploration and mining activity was conducted on the property. Systematic evaluation and development did not, however, begin until March 1958, when Samuel S. Arentz, a prominent mining engineer and consultant, formed several joint ventures with mining and oil companies that conducted drilling, drifting, mining, and water drawdown tests on the property. However, it remained uneconomic, principally because of low silver prices and costs for pumping large flows of underground water. In 1975, Ranchers obtained an option on the property and in 1979 began a drilling program. As of May 1982, the company had drilled 70 core holes, bringing the number of exploratory holes drilled on the property to 138. Test mining began in 1979 as silver prices increased, and full mine development began in 1980. Mill construction began in Sept. 1980, and on Aug 29, 1981, the first ore was fed to the mill.

According to relatively recent estimates by the US Geological Survey and the US Bureau of Mines, there are more than 0.9 Tt (one trillion tons) of remaining identified coal resources in the seven major western US coal-producing states and about 200 Gt (220 billion tons) in the demonstrated reserve base. Considering coal's current national production level of 0.7 Gt/a (0.8 billion tpy), these US reserve and resource figures are reassuring. Given here is a preliminary analysis of geologic constraints and an estimate of their effects on mining and recoverability of western coal. Mining Constraints USGS and USBM coal figures incorporate only thickness and depth, and are "blind" to many other major geologic constraints on mining and recoverability. The most important of these geologic constraints include: • coal seams too thin or too thick for conventional mining methods; • coal seams that cannot be mined due to insufficient separation from underlying or overlying previously-mined beds; • unstable or otherwise unfavorable roof strata; • soft or heaving floor strata; • coal seams that are too lenticular or discontinuous for conventional mining methods; • coal seams in intensely faulted areas; • coal seams having high angles of dip precluding the use of conventional coal mining methods; • coal seams that cannot be mined due to proximity of water-bearing strata; and • coal quality problems such as excessive ash, sulfur, chlorine, or sodium. Coal Thickness Present USGS-USBM classification for reserve base includes bituminous coal beds more than 0.7 m (28 in.) thick and subbituminous beds more than 5 m (60 in.) thick to depths of 305 m (1,000 ft). Both of these thicknesses are less than the thicknesses now considered mineable in the western US. The lower limit for bituminous steam coal in deep mines is about 1.5 m (5 ft). For subbituminous coal, a thickness of at least 2.4 m (8 ft) is generally required. Accordingly, the Bureau of Mines reserve base includes many thinner coal seams that will not be mined in the foreseeable future. Within the Powder River Basin of Wyoming and Montana many seams-Wall, Upper Pawnee, Lower Pawnee, Cache, Manning-range in thickness from 7.6 m (25 ft) to more than 30 m (100 ft) and occur at depths to 305 m (1,000 ft). These have been included in the Bureau of Mines reserve base. However, the mining technology required to mine these thick seams does not now exist. It will require many years for development. The ultimate recoverability from these thick seams is unknown, but could be as low as 25%.

There is an old saying in Canada: "Mines are made as much as discovered." What follows is Young's perception of his experience developing and financing the Cochrane Hill gold mine project. In 1974, I came back from rutile and zircon exploration and mining in Australia. I became interested in a copper, lead, and zinc project in the Bathurst District, New Brunswick. Much field work had already been done but I was convinced that a reinterpretation of the geophysical work left room to enlarge on the known mineralization. So, with my own money I put a property deal together, found an underwriter willing to raise $100,000, and had a lawyer produce a prospectus. The prospectus was ultimately accepted for filing by the Ontario Securities Commission and I acquired funding and began work. It did not take many drill holes to determine that the interpretation was not geologically valid. However, while drilling was going on, geophysical and geochemical explorations indicated interesting anomalous zones elsewhere on the property. But by now the base metal market climate had soured and the $50,000 I had left was not enough to evaluate the new results. So I decided to farm out the property. A data folio was produced and the property was optioned to a major mining company, with Northumberland Mines Ltd. retaining a 20% free, carried interest. By 1976, the market for junior issues was so bad no under¬writer would even talk to a geologist and I still had the $50,000 in the bank and was looking for something to initiate. A Project That Went Nowhere Market research indicated that the Toronto area imported fine calcium carbonate fillers from Georgia, Alabama, and Vermont. I was aware of the specs and the fact that there is a large marble belt in Eastern Ontario. After some prospecting, I found an interesting deposit. The product was slightly high in silica and low on brightness. Research work eliminated the silica and corrected the brightness. So, with insufficient money we launched a feasibility study. This included diamond drilling, bulk sampling, special fine grinding and air classification tests, and an in-depth market survey. Our product was as good or better than those on the market. Our advantage was that delivery could be made by a two-hour truck haul to the customer. The present system of rail delivery had many problems, especially in winter. Despite everything looking rosy, we ran into a stone wall. The underwriters were singularly unimpressed because the public saw little glamour in a substance most people had never heard of. The issue would have been difficult-if not impossible-to sell. Banks and government agencies took the position that if we could get long term take-or-pay contracts then they would lend the required capital. None of the suppliers, however, would even consider a contract until production had begun and they could evaluate the production material. It was a classic "catch 22" situation. I have gone into this in some detail to show how tough the industrial mineral market can be. We eventually optioned this calcium carbonate property to a major corporation. The option agreement would give us a free, carried 15% and the right to buy up to 40% for contributing 25% of the production costs. But the experience left my company in poor financial shape. To survive, I think the entrepreneur-geologist must always have at least one project in reserve, an emergency plan. I had been searching out a new project to work on, after the calcium carbonate option was wrapped up. It was gold. Gold intrigued me and I knew quite a bit about Nova Scotian gold. I felt that with any rise in price, many of the former high-grade gold mines would have interesting potential for the larger, low grade portions of the deposits. That is how I happened on Cochrane Hill, where much work had been done in the early 1970s when gold as $4.82/g ($150/ oz). This time my timing was good. No sooner had Northumberland signed an option agreement than gold prices started to rise. In six months, they went to $27.331g ($850/oz). Even so, financing gold prospects in early 1980 was still not easy. It had been years since gold financing had been undertaken. A whole new generation of investors, with no knowledge of gold mining, had grown up. So, with accounting and legal council, we decided on a semiprivate "seed money" offering. Under the new Ontario Securities Act, this was a new-and partly tax sheltered-concept. At the time, it was very innovative.

The recent increase in size of open-pit mining operations has resulted in major improvements in efficiency that are beneficial to the mining industry. Higher bench heights, larger diameter blast-holes, and more powerful explosives have played an important part in reducing mining costs. These measures have, however, resulted in increased energy concentrations in the blast area, which can result in severe backbreak problems for final pit walls. If backbreak is not controlled, a decrease in the overall pit slope angle will ultimately be necessary, and consequences, such as decreased recoverable ore reserves and increased waste-to-ore ratios, will result. Greater amounts of loose face rock will be produced, and planned safety berms will be less effective or nonexistent. Hazardous working conditions can also result. Remedial measures, such as scaling large areas and using wire mesh or other artificial support, are very expensive and difficult to implement. There must be a trade-off between the money saved by using larger blasts, and the time spent to maintain pit wall quality. The best approach is to control blasting effects so the inherent strength of pit walls is not destroyed. Presplit and trim blasting are two control blasting techniques used to accomplish this. Both techniques are designed to create a low explosive energy concentration per unit of wall area at the perimeter of the pit. Energy concentration of the main production blast must also be controlled to avoid damaging the final pit wall. A low-energy concentration at the final wall can be obtained by decoupling charges, decking charges, using less powerful explosives, decreasing blasthole diameters, and changing the burden and spacing. Rock properties-fragmentation and the final state of the pit wall-influence the success of a blast. The most important properties to consider are: in situ rock strength, and the nature, frequency, and orientation of structural features. Since these variables cannot be controlled, they must be evaluated by suitable field tests, and then a control blast can be designed using controllable variables, such as spacing, burden, and hole diameter, so the blast will be successful for appropriate rock conditions. One main thrust of this article is to show how control blasts can be successfully designed for larger hole sizes, up to 381-mm-diam. While efforts to produce a good control blast in shovel/truck pits have been ongoing for some time, recent use of a modified presplit technique in dragline operations has helped reduce water problems, improve safety, and increase dragline productivity in a number of surface coal mines. This article presents examples on designing and using presplit and trim blasting for large hole operations in both shovel/truck and dragline mines. Presplit Blasting As introduction to presplit blasting, Fig. 1 illustrates a typical presplit blast layout using 102 mm-diam presplit holes for 381¬mm-diam production holes. For this type of blast, presplit holes would normally be drilled first, ahead of main production holes. The choice can then be made between loading and firing the presplit line or infilling the main blast. This paper deals with the reinforcement of igneous rock slopes at three open pit iron ore trines in northern Canada. The pits involved utilize overall slope angles in excess of 60º with ultimate depths in the order of 250 m. Three case studies are described. The first concerns the reinforcement of a 300,000 Ton undercut rock wedge, approximately 70 m in height. This was accomplished using 20 cm diameter steel bales, installed in 25 cm diameter vertical holes, and a cement-sand grout. The second involves the reinforcement of a 40 m wide diabase dyke which had been continuously failing as the pit deepened. A unique form of rock reinforcement was used in that the entire mass of the undercut dyke was not pinned to the wall. Rather an interlocking effect between individual blocks within the dyke was relied upon. A third concerns the reinforcement of a berm which was undercut by the contact between the ore and waste. This reinforcement was also accomplished using a combination of steel bales, rods and cement grout.

Silver ore was discovered at Aspen in 1879, but the district did not reach full production until 1888 after lawsuits were settled and railroads furnished less expensive transportation to the outside world. The boom years were 1888-92; production declined thereafter. From the middle 1920's until 1950, the Midnight mine in the Richmond Hill district furnished most of the output in the Aspen quadrangle. Since 1950, little mining has been done at Aspen. The metals produced were silver, lead and zinc. Native silver dissolved from the sulfide ores was redeposited by waters circulating as deep as 300 m below the land surface, resulting in great secondary enrichment of many of the deposits. Over 100 million ounces of silver were produced in the Aspen quadrangle. Low-grade lead-zinc deposits remain between the old workings locally, and data available suggest that primary ore below levels mined is also of low grade. The ore occurs in the Mississippian Leadville Limestone and the lower part of the Pennsylvanian Belden Formation in sites that were made favorable for deposition by a number of stratigraphic and structural factors.

"In February 1980, Dome Mines Limited announced a $50 million expansion program which would result in a 50% increase in mill capacity from the present 1,815 tonnes per day to an eventual production rate of 2, 720 tonnes per day in the year 1984. As an integral and necessary part of this planned expansion, a new vertical production shaft, No. 8 Shaft, would be sunk from surface to a depth of 1,645 metres.Throughout the seventy-year history of mining at the Dome, gold has been found in a number of different rock types and in association with a number of different structural settings. However, the key to successfully locating ore deposits lies in the recognition of the favourable environments in which they generally occur. First and foremost, the exercise of locating the No. 8 shaft became an exercise in geological deduction based on the projection of these favourable lithologic environments.In November 1980, after detailed engineering work was completed, the total cost of the project was estimated at $75.5 million 1980 dollars or $91 million dollars allowing for inflation over a four-year construction period. These estimates include the shaft, significant replacement and alterations to the milling process, and an upgrading of the plant."

It concludes with a selected bibliography.Surveys Utilizing Leakage HalosLeakage halos can be used as scalar or vector quantities in thesearch for deeply buried blind mineral deposits. In the first case, the occurrence of a leakage halo (e.g. a small pitchblende seam) may simply indicate the possible presence of pitchblende mineralization or orebodies; in the second case, the areal or three-dimensional distribution of leakage halos may, by their increasing frequency and I or increasing metallic or gangue element content, provide a means of vectoring in on loci of mineralization and orebodies. Examples of both cases are given in the following text.Leakage halos are of many types, as shown in Figure 2 (Part 1), and are best discussed with respect to their associated mineral deposits. Furthermore, it should be noted that leakage halos are frequently offshoots or extensions of enveloping halos. Where this occurs, careful tracing of the leakage halo(s) downward or upward respectively will often lead to the apex or nadir (bottom) of the enveloping halo(s) and ultimately to mineralization or ore."
