Abrasives include the substances, natural or artificial, that are used to grind, polish, abrade, scour, clean, or otherwise remove solid material, usually by rubbing action but also by impact (pressure blasting for example). They do not include abrasive tools, for instance, lathe tools and files--or polishing agents such as waxes, which act by filling pores. Detergents and cleaners whose action is chemical rather than physical are omitted al- though some chemical-action polishes and cleaners may also contain solid abrasives, for example, many automobile and metal polishes. General Considerations The most important physical properties of materials that qualify them for use as abrasives are hardness, toughness (or brittleness), grain shape and size, character of fracture or cleavage, purity or uniformity. For making bonded abrasive products such as grinding wheels, additional important factors are stability under high heat and bonding characteristics of grain surfaces. The economic factors of cost and availability are always important. No one single property is paramount for any use. For some uses extreme hardness and toughness are needed, as in diamonds for drill bits; for others, the factors of greatest importance are hardness and ability to break down slowly under use, to develop fresh cut- ting edges when grains become worn-for example: in garnet for sandpaper neither highly cleavable or friable grains nor extremely tough grains are wanted. For still other uses, great hardness is objectionable; for example, abrasives for dentifrices and for glass-cleaning soaps. For the most efficient use in the more critical applications, the different types of abrasives are rarely completely interchangeable; thus, while crushed quartz and garnet are both used in sandpaper, the papers are not at all interchangeable in their use applications. In the last analysis, the choice of a high grade abrasive depends upon the quality and quantity of work done by the abrasive per unit of cost. Initial cost of an artificial abrasive may be much greater than that of a natural abrasive but the artificial abrasive may do so much better work than the natural one, and do it so much faster that the ultimate cost will be less. It is for this reason that artificial abrasives have largely replaced natural abrasives. Abrasive Value Mineralogical hardness or "scratch" hardness as expressed in Mohs' scale is an important property in evaluating abrasive materials, but, as noted before, it is only one of several essential properties. The mineral hardness of pure crystal almandite garnet is about 7.5, but if the crystal is crossed by incipient fracture planes, or if it contains inclusions of other minerals, the apparent or useful hardness may be much lower. While the quartz grains in a sandstone have a hardness of 7, the bond holding the grains together may be so weak that the stone is valueless as a commercial abrasive. In artificially bonded wheels and stones, the hardness, strength, and character of the bond are fully as important as the hardness of the abrasive grains. Thus, in an overall consideration of abrasive hardness of loose abrasive grains, both "scratch" hardness and toughness must be considered. In naturally or artificially bonded abrasive stones, bond characteristics are a third factor, which is most important. The problem of abrasive hardness is further complicated by the inadequacies of methods of testing hardness and of expressing relative values. This report presents a stress investigation of four coal pillars located under two depths of cover. Each coal pillar was instrumented with ten load cells designed to measure coal pressure during initial and secondary mining. The problem considered was one of uniform triaxial stress as a large coal pillar was loaded under a thick limestone bed. Special attention was given to pillar design procedure. Unconfined uniaxial compression tests were conducted for coal specimens 7/8 in., 2-1/8 in., 3 in., and 4 in. square with length to square side ratios of 1/2, 1, 1-1/2, and 2. Stress-strain curves were recorded. Six specimens were tested at each size. Results show that a coal pillar is composed of an inner zone which is highly loaded plus a region around its perimeter which has lost its elastic strength. The bearing capacity of a coal pillar consists of elastic and crushed coal response: The failure strengths have been determined and will be useful in coal recovery, mine design, and mine safety.

1. Domestic Production and Use: In 1974 twelve companies operated 31 primary aluminum reduction plants, three firms accounting for 64% of production. Washington, Oregon, and Montana accounted for 32% of the total production; Gulf Coast States, 24%; Northern States, 33%, and other Southern States 11%. Output of primary metal in 1974 was valued at $3.4 billion. About 80% of the secondary recovery was from new aluminum base scrap and 20% was from old scrap. Aluminum consumption by 25,000 firms was centered in the East Central United States. Of aluminum consuming industries in 1974, building accounted for about 27%; transportation 19%; electrical, 13%; packaging, 15%; and consumer durab1es, 9%.

"Pipe Open Pit ore is delivered by rail to the Thompson Mill at a rate of 34,000 tons per week. Ore is milled at a rate of 220 tons per hour.Characteristics of the serpentinised peridotite host rock are such that significant deviations from hitherto experienced milling practice became a necessity because of coagulation of the gangue upon cominution.Extensive development work was done in the grinding and classification circuits to better understand the ore characteristics and optimize operating parameters and the use of available equipment. This work ultimately resulted in the change from 30 to 20-inch diameter cyclones.Coagulation of the ore slurry and the characterstics of the sulfide minerals necessitated an ""unconventional approach"" in processing as compared with the beneficiation of Thompson Mine ore.Recent changes in ore characteristics led to testing of antistatic agents to reduce tailing losses."

Any discussion of growth and future requirements has to begin with people--both their number and their needs. Both have been rising ever since any American can remember. Together, the number of people, which has been increasing rather modestly, and their wants and desires for material things, which have been increasing very sharply, seemed to have comprised a growth imperative in mineral consumption in the United States, especially during the last several decades. While the Nation's birthrate is now well below the replacement rate and still falling, the built-in momentum of the post-World War II population boom will continue to be felt well into the 21st century. Even using the modest projection of a 0.8 percent yearly increase, we are still looking at the possibility of 265 million Americans being around by Year 2000.

Colony Development Operation is a joint venture currently consisting of four active members; The Oil Shale Corporation (TOSCO); Ashland Oil Inc.; Shell Oil Company and Atlantic Richfield Company, operator of the project. The initial efforts on the Colony project began in the spring of 1965. Pilot mining and semi-works engineering programs continued, in phases, to completion in the fall of 1972 when commercialization of oil shale was deemed realistic. Since that time, Colony efforts have been directed toward evaluation of the data collected during the semi-works operation and in designing a commercial operation. In October of 1974, Colony announced: "because of economic and national energy policy uncertainties it was suspending plans to start construction of a commercial oil shale plant on private lands in northwestern Colorado, scheduled for spring of 1975."

The Bureau of Mines investigated ground support problems in four major block-cave mines to assess the current "state-of-the-art" and to delineate areas for future research. The most significant problem is the inability of present support systems to hold moving ground. Further, as mining progresses to greater depth, this problem becomes more serious. Providing adequate temporary support capable of withstanding primary and secondary blasting is the next most significant problem. A detailed analysis of the effect of mining methods on support problems is also recommended for future research.

A new, large mine is about to be born. Many years and millions of dollars have been invested in exploration. An orebody has been found and proven. All necessary political and legal work to establish rights and conditions for development are complete. The feasibility studies are favorable. Financing has been arranged. Board approval has been given to proceed. The time has come to engage a contractor to design and build the new facilities in a location, as is the common case today, far re¬moved from the centers of advanced technologic development where the minerals will ultimately be used. A select list of Engineering and Construction (E&C) companies is asked to prepare proposals. At this point the common viewpoint among mining companies is that the company's sole remaining problem, a major one to be sure, is to select qualified contractors to design and build the project at the lowest cost and shortest time possible so that production can start generating a return on investment. The purpose of this discussion is to explore the viewpoint of the large E&C contractor toward such projects. It differs in important ways from that of the client mining company and it is these differences and the reasons for them that must be understood by the client if severe difficulties and misunderstandings with the contractor, starting at the beginning of contract negotiation and continuing through design and construction to final startup are to be avoided or minimized. Often enough, the difference is in degree, not kind, which only serves to obscure the fact that a difference exists.

Strip mining of coal, and to a lesser extent limestone, gravel and other mineral deposits in the Appalachian region of the eastern United States has left many large and small areas of devastated land where mining predated reclamation requirements. In Pennsylvania alone, there are between 250,000 and 370,000 acres of strip-mined land 1,2/. A higher percentage, and a greater total acreage of land in Pennsylvania is in need of some form of reclamation than any other state, with the neighboring states of Ohio and Nest Virginia also having nearly the same magnitude of mining.2/ Recent legislation governing strip mining of coal proposed royalties to cover reclamation of such presently unusable land. However, in Pennsylvania and other states some progress has already been realized by utilizing abandoned strip mines and gravel pits for waste disposal sites. Given acceptable hydrogeologic settings, such use of these mined areas for landfilling has provided the incentive for ultimately restoring unreclaimed land to beneficial use, at no cost to the general public.

Using a combined fire assay-atomic absorption method, gold determinations with a minimum detection limit of 5 ppb were made on 345 samples of Early Precambrian felsic plutonic rocks collected 2 2 from intrusions ranging in size from 4 km to 88 km and in composition from syenite to granodiorite. Gold levels in unmineralized stocks are consistently below the 5 ppb detection limit of the analytical method used. In contrast, analyses of samples from stocks containing gold mines within their borders and in nearby metavolcanic-metasedimentary host rocks show a strongly skewed trace element gold population with a substantial percentage of gold values exceeding 5 ppb and ranging as high as 320 ppb. The data indicate that (1) ore-stage hydrothermal metasomatism has produced widespread Au enrichment in Precambrian intrusions that host epigenetic vein-type gold deposits, and (2) geochemical Au analysis of samples collected from 30 to 50 randomly distributed sites can be used to estimate the gold exploration potential of stock-sized bodies and to outline internal patterns of Au variation which may be useful in directing exploration to particular contacts or portions of a stock. The results do not conclusively indicate unusually high Au content in primary unaltered igneous rocks.

The direct investment role of Middle Eastern oil producing countries in future world-wide mineral development probably will be a limited one for the next five years. Their needs and their longer range economic objectives substantially preclude any such risk taking ventures. There is, of course, the possibility of political in- vestment. One hears many rumors and doomsday calculations of what the Arabs might do with the rising accumulation of surplus funds. Up to now, this kind of investment has been more in rhetoric than in money. For the most part, oil producing countries of the Middle East have been, and will be, investing surplus funds with strong emphasis on the preservation of capital. They will seek security first and yield second just like any other prudent investor. In several respects, this is regrettable. A direct infusion of risk capital into mineral development, especially in the Third World countries, is a constructive way of enhancing their earning power which many desperately need just to stave off starvation. It would also be a good way of eliminating material shortages in the industrialized world. Most important of all, it would help to ultimately reduce inflation without imposing the hardship of recession. So why isn't it done?

The yielding-rock-bolt concept, as developed in South Africa, consists of a smooth-bore die or collar fitted to a standard rock bolt. Laboratory testing at the Bureau of Mines Spokane Mining Research Center under slow and fast strain rates showed that extrusion loads can be controlled by varying the configuration of the die bore and that theoretical analysis (using basically Sachs' theory of wire drawing) predicts extrusion loads of the different die-bore configurations. A derived equation, based on this research, can be used for designed die-thread combinations for any desired extrusion load. Dynamic loading resulted in slightly higher loads (15 percent) than static loading. The strain hardening effect, which increases yield and ultimate strength, was partly offset by adiabatic heating of the threads, which decreases strength.

The past few years have produced a rash of demands for changes in America's way of doing things. From manufacturer to consumer, the rules have been changed. Some of the demands were needed and, when legislated to requirements, did manage some good for all concerned. Other demands made by zealots and taken up by regulatory agencies have forced costly changes on our way of life. No segment of industry has been exposed to more new rules and regulations than the deep coal mining industry in the United States. There is no denying that some good has evolved, but most mining men know that the effects have done more to reduce production and increase cost than they were ever intended to do.

Laboratory measurements by the Bureau of Mines indicate that failure in dry rock specimens measuring approximately 13 cm in length is preceded by tilt anomalies lasting a few milliseconds. The tilt behavior is qualitatively similar to that reported to precede earthquakes. Test results suggest that the time duration of this tilt anomaly for laboratory specimens of this length is independent of rock type, in agreement with theoretical predictions and other experimental data on rock failures including earthquakes.

This paper makes five major points which may be contributions to the art of limestone sinkhole engineering. First, solution cavity development in limestones is dependent in great measure on pyrite contained within the limestone. Second, rock failure is rarely involved in sinkhole problems, while soil failures are almost always the mode of occurrence. Third, draw down, depression of the water table, is a primary causative factor in sinkhole development. Fourth, lateral movement of vadose water along the soil-rock interface, sub-soil erosion, is the mechanism by which soil is stoped, raveled, piped, or removed from the soil cavern. Fifth, the ultimate or triggering factor in localizing a sinkhole collapse is any superposed mechanism which disrupts the continuity of an impermeable clay soil overburden. The above theses are presented as extensions of our observation and of published literature, with the suggestion that additional study of these mechanisms is warranted.

Florida produced more than eighty percent of domestic phosphate during 1974. This amounted to more than thirty-five million short tons. Ninety percent of this production was used in the production of fertilizers. Other uses of phosphate include food preservatives, fabric dyes, optical glass, photographic films, soaps, plastics, pharmaceuticals and animal feed ingredients. Marketable phosphate rock projections for the nest decade forecast a very healthy growth for the Florida phosphate industry. Associated with the expansion, however, are the corresponding problems of water conservation, air and water pollution and land reclamation. Recognizing mining as an interim land use, the industry is presently engaged in a very active reclamation program. The proximity of the central Florida deposits to rapidly developing urban areas makes it important to undertake successful and well planned reclamation programs. Water use and conservation is of vitil importance to the industry. Water withdrawal from existing aquifers and discharges into drainage systems are closely regulated by state agencies. Water is stored and recycled to maximize usage. In some instances water is even returned to major aquifers through a series of recharge or connector wells. The phosphate industry has spent over 200 million dollars in the past decade for research, development and implementation of pollution abatement and water conservation systems.1 The following discussion outlines various phases of phosphate mining in central Florida today, with emphasis on research in waste disposal techniques and progressive land reclamation programs.

The mineral mica, which has been known to man since ancient times, has played an impor¬tant role in the development of our modern industry. In the latter part of the 19th century sheet mica began finding use as a dielectric insulating material in the newly developing electrical industry. Later, when modern elec¬tronics began to develop, it became a vital insulating and dielectric material for use in electronic equipment. Both the electrical and electronic industries were greatly dependent on some form of natural mica. The manufacture of electric motors of varying sizes, electronic tubes, and other electronic items was dependent on an adequate supply of sheet mica. During World War II this material was so vital to national defense that special efforts were made to mine it in the United States as well as to obtain it from overseas mica-producing areas. However, advancing technology has successfully begun the progressive development of man-made mica-based and non-mica-based materials that can replace mica for many uses. In addition, developing technology has dictated changes that have made sheet mica unnecessary for some uses. As the demand for sheet mica declined, the demand for scrap and flake mica has continued to increase. In fact, today the domestic production and use of scrap and flake mica far outshadows the necessity for good¬quality sheet mica in this country. Historically the United States has always been dependent on foreign sources of material for good-quality sheet mica and imports practically its entire requirement. In the case of scrap and flake mica, the United States is the dominant world producer and consumer. End Uses Sheet mica (Chowdhury, 1941; Rajgarhia, 1951; Skow, 1962) is available in many com¬mercial forms, but these forms can be broadly classified into manufactured and unmanufac¬tured mica. Manufactured mica consists of mica that has been shaped, punched, or other¬wise processed into some form, suitable for a particular end use. Unmanufactured mica con¬sists of partially hand-trimmed or processed material that has not been prepared for any particular end use. Unmanufactured mica is broken into two commercial classes consisting of sheet mica and scrap and flake mica. These classes of mica differ greatly in their ultimate end uses and marketed forms. Sheet muscovite mica can be classified by color, degree of prep¬aration of the crude material, thickness, size, visual appearance, and electrical quality. In addition, phlogopite mica is also classified by its thermal stability. Scrap and flake mica consist of mine, trimming shop, and factory scrap that occurs as remnants from mining, processing, and manufacturing operations, and small particle size mica that is available from the beneficiation of pegmatites, clays, schists, or other mica-rich host rock. The end uses for sheet mica vary so greatly from those of scrap and flake mica that it is necessary to discuss them separately. Sheet Mica Sheet mica consists of relatively flat sheets of material which have been mined as naturally occurring books or runs of mica. These sheets are hand-trimmed to remove any imperfections and are punched or stamped into specified shapes for industrial use. Sheet mica can be further processed and is described or specified as block, film, or splittings based on thickness. Block mica is not less than 0.007 in. thick with a minimum usable cross-sectional area of 1 sq in. Film mica is split from the better quali¬ties of block mica to specified thickness groups ranging from 0.0012 to 0.004 in. This contract final report summarizes the design, fabrication and testing of canopy air curtain devices under Bureau of Mines Contract H0232067. The canopy air curtain device is designed to reduce the level of respirable dust exposure to a continuous mining machine operator while having a minimum effect on operator safety, mobility and comfort and being compatible with mining equipment. This contract was devoted to the development of a device which utilizes an invisible curtain of air to envelope a mining machine operator's breathing zone with filtered air to provide respiratory protection. Various concepts were evaluated by means of laboratory tests. One concept was selected and was tested on various mining machines at underground sites by means of MSA personal samplers. The canopy air curtain was found to be effective. The percent reductions over the ambient dust concentrations were about 30 to 75 percent depending on the amount of time the operator spent under the air curtain. At one test site, the device enabled the mining machine to operate within compliance. Donaldson Company is presently working on the commercial production of the device.
