With the ever-increasing demand for energy in all forms, electrical energy generated from geothermal resources could become an important energy source in the next few decades. Geothermal fluids, which contain appreciable quantities of dissolved salts and gases, are generally corrosive to materials of construction. Since data on corrosion of materials in geothermal brines is limited, the literature was surveyed through February 1972 to obtain a compilation of information on corrosion resistance of aluminum and its alloys, copper and copper-base alloys, carbon steel and cast iron, stainless steels, chromium-iron alloys, nickel-and cobalt-base alloys, and titanium in heated brines including sea water.

In 1970, of the 603 million tons of coal produced in the United States, 339 million tons, or 56%, were produced by under- ground mines. While the ratio of underground to surface production has been decreasing in the last few years, it is anticipated that a 60:40 ratio of underground to surface-mined coal will remain for some time. Underground coal operators are continuing to invest in new mines and are interested in increasing the efficiency of all their operations. One area for improvement is in mine planning and design, particularly in the area of selection of equipment for operation. Because of the availability of a wide variety of equipment, a fair degree of selectivity can be exercised in the choice of equipment for a particular job. However, such a choice must be made on the basis of technological facts and forecasts related to the mining operation. If the mining conditions can be reasonably predicted, along with a mining plan, it should be possible to insure the selection of the right equipment for the particular application. In order to increase the efficiency of underground coal operations, it is necessary to understand not only the operating system in detail, but the inter-relationships between system components and the operating environment. With such an understanding comes the application of simulation and other operations research techniques to plan and operate mining systems. Computer simulation studies have been successfully adapted to underground coal mining, and applications by Prelaz et al. (1965), and Manula and Sanford (1969) are some that are being used by the mining companies. However, a need still exists for better understanding of certain intra-system and system-environment interactions in order that computer simulation programs may be provided with better input data for more effective application. This paper deals with one aspect of the coal-winning system in need of better definition, namely, studying the performance of continuous miners.

A summary of Bureau of Mines research on recycling, reuse, and disposal of mineral-, metal-, and energy-based wastes is presented, accompanied by an extensive bibliography of related publications. The Bureau's waste recycling and disposal program is directed toward the following four main areas of research and development: (1) extraction of mineral, metal, and energy values from urban refuse; (2) upgrading and recycling of automotive and related ferrous and nonferrous scrap; (3) recovery, utilization, and stabilization of mine and mill processing wastes, and (4) recovery and reuse of values from industrial waste products. This publication updates Bureau of Mines Information Circular 8529, which was issued August 1971.

Acids, neutral oils, and pitch were produced by distillation of low-temperature lignite tar and processed to upgrade them into more valuable products: The acids were separated from the distillate and catalytically dealkylated to produce phenol, cresol, and xylenol. Aromatic and naphthene fractions of the neutral oil were converted into phthalic and maleic anhydrides by catalytic hydrodealkylation and vapor- phase oxidation. Paraffins and n-olefins from the neutral oil were processed into alkybenzene sulfonate, a biodegradable substance. Aromatic materials from the neutral oil were also extracted with organic compounds and the extract hydrogenated under pressure to produce jet fuel. The pitch was processed by various means to change its characteristics and make it suitable for similar applications as high- temperature tar pitch, including preparation of carbon black and metallurgical electrodes. In most cases, products obtained from the low-temperature tar were examined for physical and chemical characteristics and for potential commercial utility. Information obtained from this research would be helpful if a new coal- chemical industry based on tar utilization were established.

The purpose of this research was to develop a method to remove copper and tin from the magnetic fraction of incinerated municipal refuse, as recovered by the Bureau of Mines pilot plant in College Park, Md. Copper, present in the scrap in a metallic form bonded to ferrous objects, was amenable to leaching in cupric ammonium carbonate solution. Copper levels in small 5-to 10-lb lots of treated scrap were reduced from the initial level, 0.5 to 0.6 pct, to 0.1 to 0.2 pct. Larger lots of scrap (100 lb) were treated less effectively because of poor contact of solution and scrap. Oxidation in the air or in aerated aqueous solution was applied to liberate tin from the dilute solid solution present on the surface of incinerated tinplate. Shredding of air-oxidized scrap or caustic leaching of scrap oxidized in solution reduced tin levels from the initial 0.25-pct level to about 0.1 pct.

Control of the environment is as old as mining. Engineers have always had to consider how best to deal with the surface, and the character of the surface environment always affects mining method in some way. However, if the relationship of the mine to the environment is old, today's approach is new. For one thing, land, air and water formerly could be viewed simply as obstacles to be overcome or resources to be utilized to win ore at the lowest possible cost. Now we have come to realize that these nonmineral components of the environment also are highly valuable. For another thing, environ- mental protection has become a public policy issue. Again, a special public interest in land and land use is old. From the firs(, the crown claimed extra rights in valuable minerals, and to this day a multitude of laws and regulations control-and tax-land use in every country. What is new is the detailed public attention bring given to waste management practices, whether these wastes be in the form of solids, liquids or gases, and regardless of where in the environment they appear. (It is convenient to lump all mining environmental problems, including hank fires and subsidence, together under the term "waste management," for in effect that is what they are.) As a result of these changes, the mining engineer must consider that lie is dealing with two productive resources the minerals and the remainder of the environment-and he must expect that lie will be judged not only on his efficiency in recovering the one but also on his effectiveness in protecting the other. Further, in seeking to protect the environment, the modern mining-environmental engineer has a dual role. First, there is the obvious task of finding better ways for industry to cope with waste-management problems in actual operations. Second, there is the less obvious but equally important task of helping formulate appropriate public policy objectives for the environment. Throughout; the section it is assumed that mining is an acceptable land use for the tracts under consideration. The question of whether mining will be permitted at all on these tracts is a further public-policy issue, ultimately to be resolved politically and thus, since it is beyond the scope of engineering, is not a subject that can be usefully discussed in a mining handbook. Finally, none of the statements in the section are predicated on the assumption that required waste-management measures will be privately profitable in the conventional sense. Indeed, the reverse is more likely to be the case-at least if accounts are kept so as to include all appreciable costs and a normal rate of return on investment in waste-disposal and reclamation equipment.',',' However, it is clear that improved waste management will be required of mining firms and that, to a considerable although undetermined degree, this expenditure is in the best long-run interest of both public and industry. The several studies that have attempted to quantify the impact of mining on the environment are admittedly rough but still provide enough information to indicate that there is a big job to be done. Ecstall Mining Limited, a subsidiary of Texasgulf Incorporated, operates the Kidd Creek mine, a 10,000- tpd base metal producer, near Timmins, Ontario. Two different ore types are mined and milled copper-zinc and silver-lead-zinc. At the highly automated Ecstall concentrator, the ores are processed by selective flotation in three individual circuits. One of the most important metallurgical tools for process control is a sample system incorporating continuous onstream X-ray analysis. Recently this system was further automated by adding computer control of reagents for two copper-zinc flotation circuits. The computer programs, utilizing optimum seeking methods and smelter contract terms, have increased copper recovery 0.8% and zinc recovery 1.6%, and reduced reagent costs by 12%. Although not anticipated, copper and zinc concentrate grades were improved modestly as well.

The shaft structure being part of an underground mine, depends on programned functional duties, and on geological and hydrological conditions. The majority of Canadian metal mine shafts are in hard competent igneous rocks, which are in an elastic state of equilibrium around the excavation. Others penetrate soft sedimentary or very weak water-bearing rock formations in which the equilibrium varies from plastic to hydrostatic. Knowledge of how to interpret the underground conditions, determine acting forces and design proper structures is essential for the production and safety of the future mine.

GENERAL GEOLOGY Coal is defined as a combustible rock that had its origin in the accumulation and physical and chemical alteration of vegetation. Coal can be ignited and burned like the wood that was man's earliest fuel, but coal gives more heat than the same amount of wood and has many industrial uses. Unlike wood, coal is not generally found on the surface of the ground but is mined from the solid rock of the earth. Before taking up the occurrence, formation, and the somewhat unique character of coal in the rock sequence, let us briefly consider the general character of all rocks in the crust of the earth. Relatively little is known about the very earliest history of the earth, although a number of logical theories have been developed. Manned exploration of the moon and the rocks being returned to earth will, we hope, provide some answers to questions concerning the earth's origin and history. The period of earth history with which we concern ourselves here begins after great areas of water had evolved on earth and substantial land areas of once molten (igneous) rock existed. Weathering and other processes that attacked the surface of the rocks reduced them to small particles. Water provided by rainfall transported this material, ultimately, to large bodies of water where it was deposited. Thus was initiated the geologic sequence of sedimentary rocks that lie above the once molten igneous rocks. The crust of the earth is not completely stable, and throughout the geologic past portions of the crust have moved laterally and vertically. Even today, many coastal areas are slowly rising or sinking. More sudden earth movements are recognized by the earthquakes they cause. Throughout geologic history, rises in sea level or the sinking of the land areas have many times permitted the oceans to cover much of what are now the areas of the continents. The general term "coal mine burp" refers to the sudden and violent failure of in situ coal. Coal bumps occur in most countries where coal is worked by underground methods, and are related to both geological factors and mining tech¬niques. Although no single set of circumstances is solely responsible for causing coal bumps, it is generally agreed that at least one of five conditions is necessary in order for then to occur: 1,2,3,4 (1) the depth of cover exceeds 500-ft., (2) the overlying strata are relatively strong and stiff, (3) the coal is structurally strong, (4) the floor does not heave readily, and (5) the mining method produces high stresses over a large area of the seam. Except for the last, these conditions relate to geological factors that are impractical to control. Consequently, methods of controlling or minimizing the occurrence of coal bumps usually are concerned with mining techniques. Coal bumps have been successfully controlled by both longwall and 'yielding pillar' mining systems 4. The longwall system is particularly effective in controlling bumps, but does not eliminate them completely, especially in strong coal seams being worked at comparatively great depths, say in excess of 2000-ft.5. Under such conditions, auger drilling or water infusion often prove helpful 5,6. These techniques are used to destress or otherwise alter the mechanical properties of the coal in an attempt to shift the peak "abutment pressure" away from the immediate vicinity of the face. Under 'normal' conditions, however, it can be expected that the coal near the face will be crushed under the prevailing high stress conditions and that the peak abutment pressure will automatically be shifted into the solid coal. In this context, coal mine bumps can be characterized as unstable releases of energy associated with successive yielding of portions of the coal seam with progressive mining. Longwall and yielding pillar mining systems are effective in controlling coal bumps because they ordinarily do not allow the zone of peak abutment pressure to become 'surrounded' by destressed coal.

"Concrete is a common denominator to the building process and portland cement is an integral and necessary component of concrete. The cost of portland cement is nominal and its cost comprises, in most instances, a small portion of the total cost of ""put-in-place"" concrete.The domestic demand for portland cement in Canada is projected to be slightly less than 11 million short tons in 1980. In order to achieve this projected goal, stabilization or lowering of the cost of put-in-place construction is necessary. This enhancement of the cost of building can be achieved by:(1) improving the building process;(2) refining and improving design techniques; and(3) developing improved and economical concrete products.Some of the techniques and materials that will lead to building cost stabilization include systems building in its broadest sense, slipforming, precasting, prestressing, computer design, lightweight aggregates, fibrous concrete and integration of building components."

The work described was conducted to develop standards for the application of wire rope clips on wire rope. These standards include optimum number of clips and clip nut torques for wire rope sizes 1/4 through 2-1/4 inches, when used for forming an eye attachment in wire rope. Wire rope test specimens with clip attachments were load tested on tensile testing machines to determine an effective combination of clip nut torques and number of clips for each size of wire rope to develop efficiencies above 90 percent of the catalog ultimate rope strength.

The Bureau of Mines developed methods for fragmenting oil shale formations with chemical explosives to prepare oil shale for in situ retorting and to evaluate the extent of fragmentation by various methods. A combination of three methods of explosive fracturing was used: (1) The displacement and detonation of a liquid chemical explosive in a natural fracture system; (2) the use of 60-pct dynamite to relieve stress conditions of the rock around the wellbore; and (3) the use of pelletized TNT in a series of wellbore shots to fragment the oil shale. An attempt was made to seal or grout around the fragmented oil shale by drilling 67 holes and displacing approximately 200 bbl of neat cement in the fracture system to aid in evaluating the fragmented zone, Seven methods were used to evaluate the fragmented zone. The primary evaluation method was the recording of seismic waves to delineate the fragmented zone with results based on arrival time, amplitude, and record quality. The data from the seismic measurements indicated the extensively fragmented zone was approximately 95 ft in diameter and 70 ft thick. Results of the remaining methods of evaluating fractures--including air-flow tests, coring of the expected fragmented zone, elevation measurements to indicate overburden crowning, and surveys with high-speed camera, impression packer, and down-hole camera--agreed with and supported the data from seismic measurements. Further field application of explosive fracturing and evaluation methods is needed to determine when a zone of oil shale is effectively fragmented for efficient in situ retorting.

To process and use the heavy ends of petroleum effectively, the development of suitable separation and characterization procedures not currently available was required. A systematic procedure was developed by the Bureau of Mines using such techniques as isothermal and molecular distillation, chemical treatment, silica-alumina gel chromatography, gel permeation chromatography, and spectrometry. Using these techniques, the Bureau achieved a detailed separation and characterization of a 370° to 535° C distillate from Gach Saran, Iran, crude oil. Such a systematic procedure and the semiquantitative data resulting therefrom should be of value in selecting feedstocks and in optimizing petroleum processing operations.

Since 1949, a total of 59 disposal wells have been installed in Canada to inject liquid wastes from refineries, mining operations and chemical plants into subsurface formations at an ever-increasing rate. Well depths range from around 600 feet to almost 5,500 feet; injection rates range from 0.5 (U.S.) gpm to more than 1,000 gpm for individual wells; wellhead injection pressures range from a slight vacuum to over 500 psi. Apart from strictly technical considerations of well design, the geological, hydrodynamic and hydrochemical conditions at the disposal site have a strong bearing on the safety and success of such operations. Prevailing hydrogeological conditions in large portions of the country do not allow safe subsurface disposal.

This report, the 22d in a series, gives analytical data showing composition and quality of tipple and delivered samples of coal collected during fiscal year 1972. This coverage lists mines located in 20 States. Ultimate analyses are given for most of the coalbeds listed. Tipple samples were collected by Bureau of Mines engineers at tipples as coal was being loaded into railroad cars or trucks. The deliveries were sampled in accordance with instructions issued by the Bureau of Mines, and the samples were analyzed in the Bureau laboratory at Pittsburgh.

Eight blasts were fired in a 2-1/2-ft bench in the Stewartville member of the Galena Limestone formation in an aggregate quarry near Stewartville, Minn. The shots were dimensionally proportional to production-size bench blasts and were about 5 to 10 percent of full scale. The effects of site, timing of initiation, and burden-to-spacing ratio were studied in a 2 x 2 x 2 factorial experiment, using three boreholes, caw;, containing a 1/2-in charge diameter of high-density ammonia dynamite, in each blast. Detonation velocity measurements indicated that the dynamite detonated satisfactorily in the 1/2-in charge diameter. The effects of the three experimental variables were analyzed by weight for the percentage of oversized material produced and for size distributions determined by screening the entire muckpiles. The bench faces were painted before each shot in an effort to determine the origin of the oversized material. The square pattern (burden and spacing = 15 in) produced finer overall fragmentation and less oversized material than the rectangular pattern (burden = 15 in; spacing = 22-1/2 in). Sites 1 and 2 were about ft apart. Although site 2 produced slightly better overall fragmentation than site 1, the amounts of oversized material produced showed no significant difference. The timing of initiation (instantaneous or delayed) did not significantly influence the overall fragmentation or the amount of oversized material produced.

"Over the past five years, contributions from geologists and mining engineers were instrumental in the successful development of MEPS. It is a system of FORTRAN programs specifically designed to be used by mining personnel to solve geological and mining problems. MEPS is a flexible keyword-driven system. Extensive error editing procedures significantly reduce the time required to proceed from problem recognition to solution. Possibly the most attractive feature of MEPS is that computer solutions may be guided or selectively modified to obtain desired solutions. Some highlights of MEPS are:1. Vocabulary that is familiar to mining people.2. Geological data storage and retrieval.3. Statistical analysis and variograms.4. Contour maps of assays and geological horizons.5. Trend surface analysis with residual evaluation.6. Ore reserve calculations.7. Open-pit mine design.8. Marginal profitability calculations on pit walls.9. Production scheduling.10. Vertical cross-section plots indicating pit outlines, ore grade contours and selected geological horizons."

"WHAT I PROPOSE TO DO is to review or report very briefly and generally on the most important subject areas of environmental concern within the mining industry and to indicate the progress being made. First, however, it seems to me both appropriate and necessary to refer to what I said in an address to the CIM Annual Western Meeting, in November 1971, in Vancouver. At that time, I tried to convey: that the awareness and alertness of this far-flung and diversified industry was sharply on the up-swing; that the knowledge of helpful technology for the abatement of pollution by water and solids was significantly increasing; that most mines were doing something about it; that many had already achieved a recycling of process water to a really significant extent; that progress was being made - though not without considerable difficulty - on the large-scale neutralization and subsequent chemical treatment of acid- and metals-bearing waters; that increasing work was being done by individual mining companies on methods for the vegetation of completed tailings impoundments; and that it had been possible to develop a meaningful estimate of the amount of money to be spent by the industry on environmental control measures during the period 1971-75 (as much as $500,- 000,000 ) . Reference was also made at that time to the constructive work in hand toward the fixation, elimination or dispersion of sulphur from smelters and to the considerable attention which was being given by the indust(y itself toward in-plant problems, e.g., dust and noise. Finally, note was taken of the fact that the inclusion of environmental control costs in the pre-operational financial provisions of new mining operations is now established practice."

Organized efforts toward the prevention of injuries and occupational diseases have been of comparatively recent origin in the mining industry, dating generally from the beginning of this century. Mining-and particularly underground mining- is more hazardous in many respects than most other major industries, and continual and increasing attention has been given to its health and safety aspects. The importance of the physical well-being of those engaged in mining was recognized by Agricola, who, after describing the hazards encountered in 16th century mining operations, stated that "Some of these evils, as well as certain other things, are the reason why pits are occasionally abandoned." In the past 50 yr particularly, mine managements and labor organizations, separately or collectively, have mounted productive efforts toward the prevention of accidents and industry-associated diseases and illnesses. A statistical study of this period indicates that increasing awareness coupled with the endeavors of all concerned agencies has resulted in decreasing frequency of occurrences of injuries and illnesses. In recent years particularly the mining industry has used the services of safety engineers, industrial hygienists, inspectors, ventilation engineers and other specializing in locating and correcting deficiencies affecting the welfare of employees. Concurrently, the labor movement has incorporated into its organization individuals working in the fields of health and safety, many devoting full time to these responsibilities. Others serve in behalf of their fellow workmen as on-the-job safety representatives. Most authorities agree that accidents are caused by (1) unsafe acts, (2) unsafe conditions and, exceptionally, (3) Acts of God. The "unsafe act" often is cited as the prime cause. but many accidents, and attendant injuries, are the result of a blend of "unsafe acts" and "unsafe conditions," with each chargeable in varying proportions. It therefore is necessary to consider both the physical elements of the mine plant and the training, mental attributes and actions of all personnel involved. Analysis of an accident, if based on hasty reconnaissance and unduly hurried questioning, seldom will disclose more than surface causes and consequently will result in inadequate measures to prevent repetition. Mining involves unavoidable and calculated risks, as in all facets of life. It is most important then that men employed in mining be schooled in the hazards and develop fully the ability to evaluate and minimize risks. The environment, of underground mining often is harsh and strange compared to the more natural surface conditions man has learned to cope with as a part of established life patterns. The miner. therefore, must adapt to unusual situations and conditions and must develop a mental attitude permitting acceptance of change. 3.1-INDUSTRY-AFFILIATED SAFETY AGENCIES L. S.
