"Current interest in the distribution of mercury in the natural environment comes from quite different, though not unrelated, sources. Mercury has long been an important metal in many industries and has, therefore, been much sought after by mining interests. The presence of mercury traces in the various media of the natural environment, namely soil, rock, air, water and vegetation, is exploited by geochemists not only to find mercury and polymetallic ore deposits, but also to find most other types of economic metal mineralization. More recently, however, mercury has caught the attention of health authorities and environmental scientists who are becoming increasingly concerned over the hazards of mercury wastes and the danger these present to the environment and to man. It is now apparent that the trace quantities of mercury, considered so important and helpful to exploration geologists, can be concentrated in the biosphere to such levels as to present considerable problems for ecologists. This article summarizes most of the available data on mercury contents in materials of geological interest and presents average normal values for rocks, ores, minerals, soils, sediments, waters and plants. The geoch.emical cycle for mercury in nature is presented and the mechanisms of mercury migration around the cycle are discussed."

The title of my talk is "The Gold Miner and the Future of Gold." This title might just as accurately have been stated as "Gold and the Future of the Gold Miner." Since prehistoric times gold has been sought by mankind for its beauty and its unusual physical and chemical properties. Early in the dawn of civilization it became the ultimate unit of value and lubricated trade between peoples. For at least 6000 years, gold has been used to barter for other commodities. It has been prospected for, treasured, made into works of art and personal adornment, and from time to time has been the object of conquest. Because of its predominant role in recent centuries as a basis for money, economists began to think of it solely in these terms. Annoyed by the disciplinary pressure of gold on the money manager's desire to manipulate money, the famous economist, John Maynard Keynes, characterized it as a "barbaric relic of the past", a characterization repeated by William McChesney Martin, Jr., when he was head of the Federal Reserve Bank. Gold, however, has physical and chemical properties that make it one of the most useful metals in the modern world.' It is the most ductile metal known. An ounce of gold, for example, can be drawn into a continuous wire over 35 miles long. It also is so malleable that an ounce of gold can be beaten into films ten one-millionths of an inch thick sufficient to cover 68 sq ft of surface. It has a density of 19.3 and is so heavy that 1 cu ft of gold weighs more than half a ton. Gold is nonmagnetic and has a high electric conductivity, only slightly less than silver and copper. Gold is so inert to all the chemicals found in nature that gold coins and jewelry buried beneath the soil or at the bottom of the sea for thousands of years appear to be as bright and perfect as when they were first immersed. Finally, gold has an extremely high reflectivity both to light and infrared rays. Because of these qualities, in addition to its rare beauty, industrial and artistic uses of gold have been growing rapidly. On a world basis, a recent study estimated that in 1960 about 750 tons of gold were used for fabrication, and that the amount had grown to about 1296 tons in 1968. My objective in this talk is to discuss with you the present and future supply of and demand for gold on a worldwide basis and the effect these forces are likely to have on the price the miner can expect to receive for the gold he produces. "Experimental work has been attempted to find a useful criterion of comminution which can be determined simply in a laboratory. The suitability of the ratio of the square of tensile strength to Young's modulus, St2/E, previously derived from the theory of elasticity as a criterion of comminution, was examined measuring tensile strength, Young's modulus and critical height for drop-weight impact of five different rocks. However, satisfactory correlation between St2 /E and critical height has not been obtained, suggesting the necessity of further experimental verification of the representative value of Young's modulus of rocks. The plot of St2 vs. critical height, however, shows one-to-one correspondence, and this finding suggests that St• may be a useful criterion of impact crushing. Also, a close relationship was observed between st• and the energy index for tumbling mill grinding of •the sample rocks. It is confirmed from these findings that the quantity St• is a useful criterion of comminution of rocks, not only for impact crushing but also for tumbling mill grinding. As shown in the experimental part of this paper, the determination ol St with irregularly shaped specimens is simple."

This chapter presents a successful approach for achieving mine entry stability at the Cane Creek potash mine by the utilization of closure measurements. The mine is located in southeastern Utah (Fig. l). Mining is being conducted at depths in excess of 3000 ft under structurally complex geologic conditions typical of the Paradox salt basin. The closure measurement systems described have definite application for determining relative entry stability in other nonelastic rocks which are similar in behavior to potash. Similar types of closure measurements have been taken in various underground openings throughout the United States, Canada, arid Europe. Application of this closure data has previously met with varying degrees of success as a tool for design of under- ground openings in both elastic and nonelastic media.1-32 Closure measurements can be made easily and economically and they provide a practical solutiori to a practical problem. They are in-situ measurements which do not necessarily require laboratory correlation. Simple closure measurements have special significance in potash because "steady-state" ' closure rate, or creep, of the entries is measured. These closure rates can be utilized because nonelastic media such as potash will never achieve absolute stability around a mine entry. The potash will tend to creep or deform until all entries are closed and the overburden stress is redistributed over what was previously the mine area. To assist in the reduction of environmental degradation resulting from milling operations, the Bureau of Mines has developed, and successfully demonstrated, chemical, vegetative, and combined chemical-vegetative procedures for stabilizing milling wastes under varying environmental conditions. Costs of achieving reclamation using these stabilization procedures are compared with those of other physical and vegetative approaches. The Bureau's chemical-vegetative procedure for establishing vegetation directly on fine-sized wastes compares favorably with other stabilization processes that have been used.

Approximately 90% of all potash produced is employed as a fertilizer, either directly or with nitrogen and phosphorus. The remaining 10% is utilized in the manufacture of other chemical products, The original source of potassium was wood ash (hence the name potash), However, today the term potash refers to all commercially important salts of potassium. Sylvite, usually found associated with halite, is the predominant economic potash mineral; carnallite a lesser important source of potassium chloride, while langbeinite is important as a source of potassium sulphate. The world's first potash mining operation commenced in Strassfurt, Germany about 1860, Since that time the industry has grown steadily to its present annual volume of about 30, 000, 000 tons of potassium chloride products or 18, 000, 000 tons of K2O equivalent, potassium chloride or "muriate of potash" being equivalent to 63. 1% pure K2O, WORLD POTASH RESERVES ARE NOT EVENLY DISTRIBUTED The earth's crust contains 2 to 3 per cent potassium, mostly in the form of insoluble silicate minerals. The economically important deposits, however, are formed from brines concentrated by evaporation. The world's most important commercial deposits are of Devonian and Permian age, however soluble potassium bearing salts are presently being concentrated by evaporation in several drainage basins, notably Searles Lake, California, Great Salt Lake, Utah' and in the Dead Sea. At least twenty-four countries are known to have reserves of potash: Canada and the USSR have over 80% of the presently known world reserves, (Figure 1)

"The metal content of ore blocks can be calculated by the use of many different methods. These methods range in sophistication from manual calculation to computer. oriented techniques. In this case a cubic polynomial regression model is developed to depict the grade distribution of an orebody. Mine production, in stope dimensions, is then simulated on a computer to predict the output of metal content. The volume, grade and variance of the grade are estimated by triple integration and matrix algebra. A case study shows reasonable agreement between the results from the mathematical model and the mine geologists' estimate of production and ore reserve grade and tonnage."

Senior staff representatives of the Bureau of Mines and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) met in Washington on September 6, 1972, to review and evaluate their cooperative accomplishments to date and to consider the planning and conduct of future coordinated activities. The six presentations given at this joint staff seminar are published here for the benefit of those concerned with the problems of coal mine health, and especially those with responsibilities in administering the Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969.

"THE PRACTISING MINING ENGINEER has little time for the expression of opinion on abstract questions concerning the definition and future of mining engineering. The following comments indicate some of the thoughts and suggestions of those who have found mining engineering a very satisfying field of endeavour. The future of mining engineering has been under discussion for perhaps twenty years. It is significant that the University of Saskatchewan program was in- 88 traduced at the time that some traditional mining schools were questioning the need for mining engineers. One Canadian university, and some American schools, actually abandoned the field at this time, some ten years ago.Five years ago, Mining Magazine sponsored an international debate on training for the future, and concurrently, the CIM undertook a major survey of the mineral industry's manpower needs. The current CIM discussions should prove more fruitful, as they are directed toward mining engineering alone, rather than the broad, and confusing, spectrum of all professionals and semi-professionals of the mineral industry."

Coal resource data from published sources and company files were used by the Bureau of Mines to determine the location and extent of strippable coal reserves in Wyoming. Total strippable reserves of 23 billion tons were estimated in seven major coal areas. Seven large strip mining operations were active in 1969, and their production totaled 45 million tons of coal. Cutoffs used to define strippable reserves were (1) minimum coalbed thicknesses of 5 feet; (2) overburden-to-coal ratios of less than 10 cubic yards of over- burden per ton of coal; and (3) total overburden thicknesses of less than 120 feet, except where reserves occur in multiple beds or a single thick bed. Tertiary rocks along margins of the Powder River basin contain most of the strippable coal reserves in Wyoming. The Wyodak beds, ranging in combined thickness from 30 to 1.30 feet, crop out on the east flank of the basin and contain an estimated 19 billion tons of strippable subbituminous C-rank coals under less than 200 feet of overburden. Partings between these beds total less than 60 feet. The 100- to 200-foot-thick. Healy bed on the western flank of the basin and the 35-foot-thick School and 20-foot-thick Badger beds on the south also contain large strippable reserves. Elsewhere in Wyoming, strippable reserves. Elsewhere in Wyoming, strippable deposits are subbituminous coal of Late Cretaceous and Tertiary ages, mostly in the Hanna and Great Divide basins in the south-central portion of the State and in the Kemmerer-Hamms Fork region in the southwestern corner.

"Aggregates are the low-cost mineral raw material of building construction. Large volumes of aggregate are consumed each year. The availability of aggregates in southern Ontario is discussed in the context of the geological formations in which they occur. Sand and gravel are abundant in glacial deposits and in recent sediments. A knowledge of the glacial history is important for their discovery. Bedrock formations provide a variety of aggregates in Ontario. Knowledge of the rock types involved and of the depth of overburden are important for evaluation of the aggregate potential of bedrock resources in an area. Utilization of available resources intensifies as the population increases. Urban development makes it progressively more difficult to satisfy the demands of the construction industry. The effects of urban development on the aggregate resource base of an area are illustrated by developments and consumption statistics in the Toronto- centred region. There is an obvious need for a comprehensive survey of available resources in urban areas to serve as a guide in land-use planning. To fill this need, staff members of the Industrial Minerals Section, Geological Branch, Ontario Department of Mines and Northern Affairs, are engaged in mapping projects and mineral resource studies in southern Ontario as well as in some urban areas of northern Ontario."

When one's attention moves from the control of a process unit or from the control of a department of similar units, to the control of an entire plant, two things must change. One is the techniques of control, and the other, the goal or purpose of control. The goal is no longer maintaining a certain quality of product or maintaining a particular flow rate through a process unit. The goal becomes economic - how to make the most money out of the plant. The principal control techniques become those of optimizing, rather than regulating. It is quite common to discuss the control of an entire plant in terms of three levels of control l; regulation, supervision, and optimization. Regulation is the control of inputs to a process unit at desired values. This is accomplished by two or three mode analog controllers or DDC loops. The second level of control is the selection of these desired values, e.g., set-points of the regulation controllers. The third level is to make such adjustments or corrections to the supervisory calculations so as to optimize the plant profit. It is immediately evident that supervisory control and optimizing control are intimately related, and a distinct dividing line cannot always be drawn between the two. Some authors prefer to add even more levels such as adaptive control and management information systems, but we believe our point is well made without further division of the functions which are necessary for complete plant control. To accomplish the economic goal, that is, the optimizing (maximizing) of the profit of a mineral processing plant, the plant should ideally be operated as if it were a separate company, buying its raw materials on the open market and selling its products on the open market. While petrochemical plants endeavor to operate in that manner, unfortunately this is not true of a mineral processing plant. The plant manager has to accept the amount and quality of ore the mining department delivers to him, and the products (concentrates) are delivered to another department of the company for further refining. As the program says -we'll he talking about the expectations of the Management of an Industrial Mineral enterprise relative to the activities of geologists engaged in that enterprise. Industrial Minerals is such a large industry both in tons produced and in value of product -and of such diversity and complexity of participating enterprises, minerals and products that I doubt if anyone person can speak for the entire industry as to the expectations of management with respect to the geologist. I'm sure there are major differences in emphasis between segments of management as to the relative importance of the different aspects of the geologists' role in the scheme of things. However, we will try to generalize concerning what we consider to be important factors and to be more specific perhaps of some of the factors with which we have had direct assessable experience.

The paper considers the selection of control instrumentation for a modern flotation plant, as well as the best interpretation and most effective use of the process data obtained. Process control computer availability is considered from the outset. A general philosophy of control is proposed which leads toward a system that is its own reliability monitor. The bulk of the problems are in grinding and classification. Alternative control methods are described that use particle size measuring devices. Flotation controls, based to a large extent upon on-stream X-ray analysis, are reviewed in detail. Reagent control methods are also examined. Methods to analyze the data obtained from the various measurement devices are introduced. These methods would enable an estimate of the validity of the data and require some redundant information. Another objective of these methods is the protection of operating equipment from possible control malfunctions. Although the discussion generally considers some degree of computer usage, this paper attempts to describe instrumentation and data analysis methods that enable control with or without the process control computer.

In every business today costs come under almost microscopic scrutiny. It's hard to conceive that less than 30 years ago there was no such cost consciousness apparent in overall industry. Railroads, through their almost absolute monopoly on freight handling, were one of the industries where little thought was given to overall costs. True regulation kept rates in line, but railroads did very little in the area of supplying equipment intended to help the shipper minimize his costs and at the same time result in savings to the rail carrier. During this period, except for isolated cases, railroads placed standard cars for loading. Most railroad car fleets consisted of box cars, hopper cars, flat cars and low side gondola cars certain roads having unique movements developed special cars to accommodate the particular product, but seldom did these cars move in general interchange service. Most of you are aware that several large companies built railroads of their own as an integral part of raw materials handling from remote sources to production plants located near concentrations of usage. On these railroads special cars were built with little thought to inter-change service. Examples of such railroads are the Duluth, Missabe and Iron Range, the Elgin, Joliet and Eastern, the Union Railroad, the Bessemer and Lake Erie and the Birmingham Southern.

At LKAB's plants in Lappland, Sweden, sintered pellets are manu-factured according to three different industrial processes, viz. shaft furnace at Malmberget, straight-grate at Kiruna and grate-kiln at Svappavaara. At present the total annual capacity amounts to 4.7 million tons. However, since it has been decided to erect a new straight-grate plant (2.5 million tons) at Malmberget, and because of the decision to extend and rebuild the existing plants, it is estimated that the annual capacity will be increased to somewhat over 8 million tons by 1973. The great majority of the pellets produced is exported. They are thus reloaded several times and generally speaking roughly handled, resulting in larger or smaller product losses on arrival at the point of use. It is there-fore of great economical interest to have a good control over the transport strength of the pellets by appropriate quality testing at the point of production. In addition to good transport strength, further demands are ob-viously made on pellets destined for blast furnace operation. The blast furnace burden must maintain a good permeability for the gas. The pellets must thus have a favourable size distribution and must not be so weakened by reduction that they disintegrate under the stresses and clog the blast furnace shaft. Furthermore, the burden must have good reducibility. An increase of the rate of reduction can obviously mean increased blast furnace capacity and reduced coke consumption. In order to optimise the properties of the pellets in these respects, the producer must also be thoroughly familiar with their behaviour during reduction, particularly as the customer's interest in the reduction properties of the pellets' has increased over the last few years. Up to now the only quality demands the customer has made have generally had to do with the cold strength and the screen analysis. Thus a quality control of in addition to good transport strength, further demands are obviously made on pellets destined for blast furnace operation. Numerous investigators have studied the various factors that influence the ultimate strength of model mine pillars, such as ratio of height-to-least width; restraint or friction on the top and bottom; 1,2 the effect of stress distribution in pillars on their strength;3 and the scaling factors involved in applying the results of model pillars to full-scale pillars. However, the load-bearing capacity of pillars after initial failure does not appear to have been investigated. Yet many mines employ methods in which small pillars or pillar remnants are left systematically; these pillars crush as mining progresses and, of necessity, affect the behavior of surrounding rock even after initial failure. The effect of such crushed or crushing pillars depends largely on their load-deformation characteristics. This chapter presents the results of a preliminary investigation to determine the load-deformation characteristics of a few model mine pillars to and beyond initial failure. Various investigators have also studied the elastic and viscoelastic behavior of mine structures. In such studies, computers are frequently employed to obtain numerical results by the finite difference or finite element methods. It would be entirely feasible to write a program that would approximate the load-deformation characteristics of pillars to and beyond the crushing stage if these characteristics were known. More accurate information on the induced stresses and deformations in overlying strata and on surface subsidence could be obtained, information which should result in better strata control by enabling the engineer to calculate more accurately the effects of changes in pillar spacing, size, and shape.

"IN THE BOOK that has been rated the best seller of all time, it is predicted that man will earn his livelihood by the sweat of his brow. Apparently man has accepted the statement as a challenge and has been attempting to refute it ever since, as he continues to transfer the workload to his inanimate servants - the many types of machines and other labour-saving devices that are available to assist or perform for him in the normal tasks of the day. The history of the evolution of the use of energy takes us back to primitive man, who existed in a very low energy environment, the only energy available being his own muscle power. Although man took a great leap forward when he discovered fire, which was used for lighting, heating and cooking, he still depended upon his own muscles for power. Early man's greatest achievement was probably the invention of the wheel, which permitted him to utilize the muscle power of animals. While still in a very primitive state when viewed from the perspective of the twentieth century, man, with fire and the wheel, had achieved a standard of life far exceeding that of his predecessors. Looking beyond the very basic elements of human energy, fire and the muscle power of animals, we find the next additions of energy coming from man's mastery of other elements of nature. The Phoenicians utilized the power of the wind and the Romans adapted the energy of falling water to the water wheel."
