Equilibrium in the reaction was investigated at temperatures of 1500°, 1550°, and 1600°C for sulfur concentrations up to 7.2 wt pct. Multisample crucibles contained the liquid alloys in a resistance-heated furnace using a technique especially designed for the study of more complex alloys to be reported separately. Modern free-energy data are used to correct the H2S:H2 ratio for dissociation of H2S and calculalion of the partial pressure of S2. Published data on the equilibrium are similarly corrected. Thermodynanzic treatment of the data employs the composition variable zs = nS/(nFe — nS) and the activity coefficient Gs = as/zs The data at 1500" and 1550°C are fitted by the equation log s = —2.30zs. Within the limits of experimental error the same coefficient is applicable to the data at higher temperatures. Equations are given for the free-energy change in Reaction [I] as well as for the solution of S, gas in the metal. The heat of solution of 1/2 s2 is -32.28 i2.5 kcal. Uncertainty in the free energy is very much smaller. For dilute solutions of interest in steelmaking, the activity coefficient of sulfur is unchanged from that listed in Basic Open Hearth Steel-making. DETERMINATIONS of the thermodynamic properties of sulfur in liquid iron by Morris and williams1 and by Sherman, Elvander, and chipman' provided a basis for control of sulfur in steelmaking processes. From the standpoint of understanding the chemistry of metal plus nonmetal in liquid solution they left several questions unanswered. The activity of sulfur in dilute solution at about 1600°C was well-established but temperature coefficients were uncertain, due at least in part to the use of the optical pyrometer and uncertainty regarding the effect of sulfur on emissivity. It appeared that deviation from Henry's law increased with increasing temperature, a most unusual behavior requiring either confirmation or disproof. These studies were based on experimental determination of equilibrium in the reaction: At high temperatures H2S is partially dissociated so that the gas mixture contains HS, S2, and S in addition to HS. At the time of the earlier studies the free energies of these constituents were unknown and it was therefore impossible to make adequate correction for dissociation. Observations on the effects of alloying elements by Morris and coworkers1, 3 and by Sherman and Chip-man4 enable us to assess the effects of alloying elements on the activity and to make corrections for incidental impurities in the binary liquid. These studies as well as a number of more recent investigations will be reviewed in detail after out own experimental results have been presented. It was our purpose in planning this study to avoid uncertainties regarding the emissivity of alloys and the errors of thermal diffusion which plagued some of the early attempts,5 by using a resistance furnace and thermocouple in preference to induction heating and optical pyrometer. Modern data on free energies of the gaseous species are to be applied to our data and to those of other investigators to obtain corrected values of K1 and of the activity coefficient and ultimately to relate the sulfur content of the bath to the equilibrium partial pressure of S,. Extension of the study to include ternary and complex solutions will be described in a later section. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD a) Preparation and Calibration of H2-H2s Gas Mixture. The source of hydrogen sulfide was a preparer mixture of 43 pct H2S, balance hydrogen, contained in a large aluminum cylinder. This was passed through anhydrone and through a microflowmeter. Hydrogen was passed through platinized asbestos, ascar-ite, and anhydrone, and through a capillary flowmeter. Argon was passed through copper wool at 500°C, then through ascarite, anhydrone, and a flowmeter. The flow rate of hydrogen was kept constant at 200 ml per min, to which an arbitrary amount of the hydrogen-hydrogen sulfide mixture was constantly added and then the prepared gas mixture was introduced into the reaction tube through a gas mixer. In certain experiments 200 ml per min of argon was added to the hydrogen-hydrogen sulfide gas mixture to increase the total flow rate of gas. The ratio of hydrogen-hydrogen sulfide in the inlet gas was checked for each run by chemical analysis. A sample of the gas taken from a bypass was bubbled through zinc and cadmium acetate solution (4 pct zinc acetate, 1 pct cadmium acetate, and 1 pct acetic acid) to remove hydrogen sulfide from the gas mixture, and the flow rate of the remaining hydrogen was measured by a soap bubble method to determine the volume of hydrogen. The amount of hydrogen sulfide absorbed in solution was determined by titration with iodine against sodium thiosulfate, with starch used as the indicator. The ratio of hydrogen sulfide to hydrogen in the inlet gas could be kept within ±2 pct in the range from 10-2 to 5 x 10"4 which corresponds to from 0.2 to 7.0 wt pct sulfur in liquid iron. b) Furnace Arrangement. Fig. 1 shows the furnace arrangement and the shape of the alumina crucible used in this experiment. This paper presents a review and analysis of a highly stratified Burbank sand waterflooding project in Osage County, Okla. Permeability values in this reservoir range from less than 0.1 md to nearly 3 darcys, and 90 percent of the permeability capacity is contained in approximately 26 percent of the reservoir volume. To date, the project has recovered 103 bbl/flood-acre-ft since waterflood initiation, which represents 50 percent of the total preflood cumulative and 12 percent of the original stock-tank oil in place (OSTOIP). The outstanding feature of this project has been the economical recovery of a sizable quantity of oil at water-oil ratios higher than those normally considered prohibitive. Nearly 70 percent of the recovery to date has been achieved at water-cut values greater than 95 percent. An ultimate waterflood recovery of 138 bbl/flood-acre-ft, or 67 percent of the preflood recovery and 16 percent of the OSTOIP, is predicted. The ultimate primary and secondary recovery will be 302 bbl/acre-ft and approximutely 40 percent of the OSTOIP. The actual performance is compared with the predicted performance by both the Stiles and the Dykstra-Parsons methods, and applicabiliry of these methods to this particular reservoir is evaluated. The performance of this project indicafes highly stratified reservoirs can be successfully and economically waterflooded when either reservoir or economic conditions preclude the use of mechanical and chemical means of mdbility control. Introduction The concept of the stratified reservoir has been used by reservoir engineers for many years to describe the vertical variations in permeability within a reservoir. Numerous techniques have been advanced to predict the expected waterflood performance of the stratified reservoir, and in most cases they prove reasonably accurate. The advisability of undertaking a prospective waterflooding project is determined, based on these predictions. This paper presents a review of a waterflood project in a highly stratified reservoir that normally would be considered a marginal prospect, at best, when evaluated with any prediction technique properly adjusted for reservoir conditions. This kind of project can be successful if the predictions are used to design a waterflooding system capable of economically recovering an oil cut of 1 to 2 percent. Experience gained in the early stages of the project's development was profitably applied in the later development of the entire reservoir and could prove beneficial to other projects with similar reservoir stratification or fracture characteristics. The East Burbank pool waterflooding operations have been developed in three separate stages, each of which has been a separate project: Mid-Burbank Unit, Flood A, and Stanley Waterflood. When referred to collectively, these projects will be called the Composite Project. The Skelly Oil Co.'s Barber lease — the only portion of the pool not included in the three projects — is operated as a separate facility with a cooperative injection-well agreement. It contains less than 80 productive acres and would not significantly affect the over-all performance picture.

This Bureau of Mines report is essentially a handbook, or manual, for making the type of mineral resource valuation commonly required for such public policy problems as mineral leasing. The principle of resource valuation through the capitalization of cash flow is well established. A mathematical procedure, based on a simplified accounting system, is detailed for calculating cash flow from revenue, plant costs, and operating expense. Variations of procedure cover cost depletion, percentage depletion, and depletion limited to 50 percent of net income. The influence of the depletion provisions of the tax regulations on the value of a resource to an owner and to an operator is analyzed. The relationship of royalty, bonus payments, and sales price to resource value is also described, and methods for approximating resource values using these payments as input data are developed.

We have made calculations to evaluate the sensitivity of atomic absorption as a technique to measure vapor pressure changes with temperature. Our conclusion, supported by the experimental findings presented in this work, is that the ultimate sensitivity of the technique is well below lo-' Torr. This magnitude of vapor pressure sensitivity makes the method extremely attractive for thermodynamic studies. Atomic absorption techniques have been used previously in this connection by Scatchard and Boyd' and by vidale2 with a much lower sensitivity reported. Scatchard and Boyd's work measured cadmium pressure over Ag-Cd alloys in the range 0.02 to 0.3 Torr, and Vidale estimated that sensitivities of only 10"5 to 10"6 Torr are to be expected. Atomic absorption appears to be particularly well-suited to thermodynamic studies for several reasons: A) It is extremely sensitive; our experiments indicate an ability to measure vapor pressure changes of 10"9 Torr. B) It is highly selective; there is seldom interference among the resonant wavelengths of the various species. C) It may be performed in an absorption cell under static conditions. This alleviates such problems as surface impoverishment of alloys, attainment of equilibrium, and temperature measurement and control. D) Simultaneous, or near-simultaneous, vapor pressure measurements may be made for several elements in a given system. Experimental. The physical basis of the technique is the highly selective absorption of particular wavelengths by specific atomic species. In most atomic absorption work the element of interest is incorporated into a hollow cathode lamp to provide a characteristic spectral source of high intensity. The spectra lines characteristic of the element in the cathode are attenuated by atoms of that element in the radiation path. Radiation from silver or cadmium hollow cathode lamps was directed along a path containing a 10-cm evacuated silica cell. The cell was positioned within a silica windowed furnace and contained silver, cadmium, or an Ag-Cd alloy. As the furnace temperature was elevated, the number of atoms of the absorbing element in the vapor phase within the cell rose, and the resonant radiation was increasingly absorbed. Intensities were measured by passing the radiation through a Techtron Model AA-4 one-half meter grating atomic absorption spectrometer equipped with a photo-multiplier detector. In order to minimize instabilities in the source, the hollow cathodes were allowed to warm up for several hours and were run at only 2 5 to 30 pct of their maximum rated amperage. In addition the attenuated beam was monitored before and after each reading. The attenuation of resonant wavelengths may be related to vapor pressure by the following relationships.

The stockpiling and reclaiming of bulk materials can be a challenging task for engineers seeking the optimum solution for plant needs, reliability, and at lowest unit cost. The objective of this paper will be to expose advantages, disadvantages and limitations of many storage and reclaiming systems to the responsible engineer and management. The paper will emphasize the practical aspect of stockpiling and reclaiming methods. Many valuable and interesting papers are available dealing with the theoretical viewpoint and application of a particular manufacturer's machine. Several of these are mentioned in the bibliography. As many practical parameters as possible will be given. After twenty years in the field of designing and selling bulk materials handling systems, the needs of the user and the plant are recognized and reasonably understood. This paper cannot give solutions to all problems In this vast field but will stress practical applications and examples of various installations. The evolution of advancements in materials handling is based upon not only technological innovations, but learning from many experiences of others and utilizing them as stepping stones to improved installations.

The tensile failure of two dispersion-strengthened Ni-20 Cr alloys was studied and compared to the fracture of a similar alloy with no dispersoid. The fracture characteristics were studied using electron fruc-tography and transmission electron microscopy. In all three cases, the mode of failure was found to be microvoid coalescence. The failure in the dispersion-strengthened alloys was found to have initiated at the particles. The size of the dimples in the fracto-graphs was found to be related to the spacing of the particles, but not to the total elongation before failure. The elongation before failure was found to be related only to the amount of dispersed phase. These results are compared to those predicted by a theoretical model of ductile failure. THE continually increasing strength requirements for creep-resistant materials capable of long life at service temperatures above 1600"F (875"C) have developed considerable interest in dispersion-strengthened nickel-base alloys. The high yield strength of these alloys results from the presence of a dispersion of fine particles of thoria which act to impede the normal motion of dislocations. Many theories have been presented to explain the role of the dispersion in the strengthening of these alloys. A good review of these theories is presented by Ansell.' The ultimate strength of such alloys is not only related to mechanisms raising the yield strength, but also to the amount of work-hardening which occurs. This work-hardening is determined by the work-hardening rate and the amount of plastic strain before failure. Since fracture limits the amount of plastic strain, a study was undertaken to gain a better understanding of the fracture mechanisms in these alloys. Electron fractography and transmission electron microscopy were used to study the fracture characteristics in two dispersion-strengthened alloys and one similar alloy containing no dispersoid. These results are related to the tensile properties of the dispersion-strengthened alloys at room temperature and at 2000°F (1095°C). The results are also related to a theory for ductile fracture. 1) PROCEDURE Standard tensile specimens were made from 0.020-in. (0.051-cm) sheets of three different Ni-Cr alloys. The alloys had nominal compositions of Ni-20Cr, Ni-20Cr-2Th0,, and Ni-2OCr-4Th0,. All alloys were supplied in an annealed condition. The specimens were fractured in tension at room temperature to determine the effect of the dispersed thoria on the fracture appearance. The tensile properties were determined from the average of a minimum of three ten- sile specimens for each condition tested. The fracture surface of all of the alloys was examined by electron microscopy using standard two-stage plastic-carbon replica techniques. Thin foils of the dispersion-strengthened alloys were used to investigate the size and spacings of the dispersion particles, and to investigate sections of the 2 pct thoria alloy taken from areas of the specimen adjacent to the fracture surface. The thin foils were mechanically ground to 0.010 in. (0.025 cm) and then chemically polished to approximately 0.001 in. (0.003 cm) in a solution of 29 g of ferric chloride and 10 ml hydrochloric acid in a liter of water. The polishing solution was maintained at 150"F (65°C) during the thinning operation. The final thinning of the foil was done electrolytically using a solution of 700 ml ethanol, 100 ml 2-butoxy eth-anol, 120 ml distilled water, and 78 ml perchloric acid (70 pct). The potential was maintained at 15 v and the bath temperature at -20°~ (-29°C) during the thinning operation. The final thickness of the foil was approximately l000A as determined from the width of twins boundaries observed in many of the foils. 2) RESULTS AND DISCUSSION The electron fractographs of the fracture surfaces of the alloys are shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3. The normal interpretation of this type of fractographz is that, as a result of the difference between elastic and plastic properties of the matrix and the particles or other inhomogeneities in the alloy, microvoids are formed

U.S. supply and demand data for utility electricity by States and regions were tabulated for the years 1960 and 1965. Estimates are provided of State-by-State quantitative data for the utility electricity industry that can be integrated into State and regional energy balances by source, form, and major consuming sectors, and used to determine basic flow-patterns. The difficult problem of compiling interstate and interregional shipments of electricity was resolved by (a) assuming the negligibility of interregional shipments and (b) deriving a theoretical line loss percentage used for determining interstate shipments. The data developed were able to show an estimated total supply of utility electricity available for consumption. The tables also report the distribution of the supply among the major consuming sectors (household and commercial, industrial, and transportation). To compare the various energy sources of utility electricity, quantities were converted to their British thermal unit (Btu) equivalents. The Federal Power Commission, Edison Electric Institute, and Bureau of Mines are the sources of the data used in this study.

Coal reserves of the Rocky Mountain area are vast and are more than adequate to meet significantly increasing demands in the immediate future. Practically all of the increase in coal demand for the next decade or so will be in the electric power utility sector. All ranks of coal are available in the area, and from a technological viewpoint, all are suitable for electric power generation. Location of economically recoverable coal deposits, location of generating plants with respect to power demand areas and sources of cooling water, and availability and price of other fuels are the major factors which, individually or in combination, will determine the ultimate selection of Western coal deposits to be developed for electric power generation. The low sulfur content of most western coals and the non-urban location of many power plants should tend to minimize problems of air pollution. If projections for nuclear power prove correct, increases in demand for Rocky Mountain area coals beyond about 1980 will depend primarily on the extent of commercial development of synthetic fuel processes. Current research activities on the conversion of coal to liquid and gaseous fuels are promising. Most western coals range in rank from lignite through high-volatile bituminous coals and are particularly amenable to conversion. Vast reserves of Rocky Mountain coals have long lain dormant primarily because of their remoteness from major market areas. Recently, however, innovations in coal transportation and electric power transmission methods, combined with unprecedented demands for electric power in the West, have resulted in large-scale development of some of these coals. In the past few years, announcements of coal mine openings and transportation plans in the Southwest have been filled with superlatives: The Navajo mine in northwest New Mexico is expected to be the largest mine in the country in the near future. The largest single coal agreement ever made provides for coal shipment from northeast Arizona to Nevada via the largest and longest coal-slurry pipeline ever used. An 1100-mile haul of coking coal from northern New Mexico to California by unit train began last year. It is the purpose of this report to evaluate the coal resources of the Rocky Mountain area, and to project their potential utilization. In projecting energy demand levels on a national basis, the Bureau of Mines has developed some rather complex techniques to cope with uncertainties. Using these same techniques, an estimate has been made of consumption of Mountain area coal in 1980. No attempt was made to estimate coal consumption beyond 1980, but new market potentials are discussed briefly. The present and potential coal-producing fields of the Rocky Mountain area are in six states comprising the Mountain Region - Arizona, Colorado, Montana, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming. The only economically significant deposit of dolomite in New Zealand is at Mount Burnett, in north-west Nelson. The dolomite, associated with marbles and schists, is complexly deformed, and is of Paleozoic age.A very large quantity is present, although the recoverable amount is to some extent limited by the difficult terrain.Physically the quality of the dolomite is excellent. It is a tough, durable, fine grained rock. Chemically it is a little more variable. The range and frequency o~ the more important impurities are illustrated by hlstograms, as is the "dolomite factor"-a measure of the amount of the mineral dolomite in the rock. lbe dolomite factor averages 84 per cent, the remainder of the rock consisting largely of calcite. Quarrying, milling, production, and uses are described. In 1966 production reached 13,250 tons.

Transportation is one of several important increments in the total market cost of most commodities. On a national average it has been reported that transportation accounts for about 25% of the total cost of a product at the market place. And industrial minerals are no exception. In fact, the proportionate cost frequently exceeds the 25% average. Further, it may actually determine the economic value of a deposit. Transportation may possibly be thought of as a specialized subject of concern only to a traffic manager and of only nominal interest to the mining engineer, the geologist or other technically oriented member of mineral producers' staff. However, in the industrial minerals field, interest is not commonly confined to exploration, development, production or marketing, but is in contrast an overlapping one. In a very real sense this broad area of interest in the total economics of the business is the specialty of the industrial minerals man. And transportation is a vital part of the total picture. Comments in this paper deal with rail transportation.

The effects of changes in short-range order on some thermodynamic, electrical, and mechanical properties of the silver-rich Ag-Mg solid solutions have been investigated. The heats of formation at 273°K of several alloys after two different thermal treatments were measured by liquid metal solution calorimetry. Their electrical resistivities were measured at temperatures ranging from 4° to 773°k. Tensile tests and microhard-ness measurements were carried out at room temperature. An effective short-range order parameter and an effective interaction energy are defined. The measured changes in the properties are interpreted in terms of these quantities. The short-range order parameter is evaluated separately from calorimetric and X-ray data; the results are in fair agreement. Increasing short-range order lowers the resistivity of- the silver-rich Ag-Mg alloys but does not measurably affect the temperature dependence of the resistivity. Short-range order increases the yield stress of these alloys but does not affect the ultimate tensile stress. Changes in the effective short-range order parameter independently obtained from measured changes in the heat of formation, resistivity, and yield stress are in fair agreement. THE thermodynamic, electrical, and mechanical properties of solid solutions have been investigated as functions of composition in many alloy systems, but the effects of configurational variables, such as short-range or long-range order, on these properties have received much less attention. The silver-rich terminal solid solutions in the system Ag-Mg are well-suited for the investigation of the effects of order. The composition of these solid solutions may be varied over a range extending to about 27 at. pct Mg.1 Appreciable short-range ordering is likely to take place in these solid solutions; the degree of short-range order can be varied by suitable thermal treatments. In the alloy Ag3Mg long-range ordering is possible.2 This paper is primarily concerned with the effects of short-range order on some thermodynamic, electrical, and mechanical properties of the silver-rich Ag-Mg solid solutions.-The long-range ordering transition is the subject of a concurrent paper.3 1) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES 1.1) Preparation of Specimens. Ag-Mg alloys containing up to 26.4 at. pct Mg were prepared by melting 99.99 pct pure Ag (obtained from Baker Chemical Co.) and 99.99 pct pure Mg (obtained from Eastman Chemi- cal Co. or Johnson Mathey & Co.) in graphite crucibles under molten potassium chloride. The solidified ingots were homogenized at 823°K for 10 days in evacuated Vycor capsules. A surface layer 6 in. thick was then removed by machining. The ingots were swaged into rods (2.5 mm diam) which were drawn into wires (1.0 mm diam). The wire specimens were annealed at 773°K for 24 hr in vacuum and either quenched into iced brine or cooled to room temperature over a period of 15 days. The average grain diameter (obtained from the linear intercepts) was about 0.1 mm. 1.2) Calorimetry. The heats of formation of the alloys were measured in a tin solution calorimeter as the difference in the heat effects of alternate additions of samples of an alloy and the mechanical mixture of its component elements. The additions were made from 273°K to the bath at about 623°K. The heat effect on addition of the alloys was approximately 5.5 kcal per g-atom. The procedure and the method of calculation have been described.4 1.3) X-Ray Diffraction. Short-range order parameters of two alloys were calculated from diffuse scattering intensities,' obtained with briquettes made from powdered specimens. A GE-XRD 5 diffractometer with filtered copper radiation was used. The absolute intensities were based on calibrations with paraffin. 1.4) Resistivity Measurements. The electrical resistivities were measured by a potentiometric method in which the potential drop across the specimen was compared with that across a standard resistance. For measurements below room temperature, the specimens were immersed in liquid helium (4°K), liquid nitrogen (78°K), dry ice and trichloroethylene (195°K), or ice and water (273°K). Measurements above room temperature were made on specimens held in a furnace under helium or in vacuum. The resistivity measurements were reproducible to ±0.5 pct or less. 1.5) Mechanical Tests. Tensile tests were carried out at room temperature with a Tinius-Olsen XY elec-tromatic Universal testing machine. Wire specimens (nominal gage length 1 in.) were used. The strain was measured with an extensometer, which had a sensitivity of 4 x 10-5; the strain rate was 10-3 min-1. Microhard-ness measurements were made with a square-pyramid indenter and a 100-g load.11 2) RESULTS AND DISCUSSION All measurements were made on two parallel sets of specimens, one quenched and the other slowly cooled from 773°K. The reported values are the averages of at least three measurements. In the range of magnesium concentration substantially below that of the composition Ag3Mg, quenched alloys have less short-range order than slowly cooled alloys. The West Kentucky Division of Island Creek Coal Company, which is a wholly owned subsidiary of Occidental Petroleum Corporation, operates the new Hamilton Mine. It is located six miles West of Morganfield, Kentucky, in the Northwest section of Union County, adjacent to the Ohio River in Lock 50. On July 15, 1968, a unique new coal conveying system was put in operation. This system consists of eight conveyor units carrying coal from the bottom of the mine slope ultimately to barges on the Ohio River. It is over two miles in length and has a total of 3175 connected horsepower. The river loading conveyor is the longest 72" wide conveyor in operation in this country.

The effects of hydrostatic pressure up to 400 ksi at 25" to 300°C on the mechanical properties of three forms of commercial beryllium (hot-pressed block, extruded rod and cross-rolled sheet) were investigated. Three effects of pressure were studied: mechanical beharior under pressure, the effect of pressure-cycling, and the effect of tensile prestraining under hydrostatic pressure on the subsequent tensile properties at atmospheric pressure. For all three materials the ductility increased with pressure whereas the flow stress did not appear to be significantly influenced by pressure. An increase in the subsequent atmospheric pressure yield strength generally occurred as a result of pressure-cycling or prestraining under pressure, whereas either no change or a decrease in ductility occurred. The only exception to this was sheet material, which exhibited some improvement in ductility following a pressure-cycle treatment of 304 ksi pressure. The effects of pressure-cycling and prestraining were relatively independent of the temperature at which they were conducted. Stabilized cracks of the (0001) type were found in hot-pressed specimens and {1120) type in extruded and sheet specimens following straining under pressure. Also, pyramidal slip with a vector out of the basal plane, presumably c + a, was identified by electron transmission microscopy for extruded rod and for sheet strained under pressure. Small loops similar to those previously reported were found after straining at pressures of the order of 300 ksi. THE use of beryllium in structures is limited because of its poor ductility under certain conditions. Therefore, one objective of the present research was to determine if the ductility of beryllium at atmospheric pressure could be improved by prior pressure-cycling or prestraining under hydrostatic pressure. Another objective was to study the mechanisms associated with the plastic flow and fracture of the polycrystalline form of this metal with pressure as an additional variable. Since the early work of Bridgman,1 it has been recognized that many materials which are brittle at atmospheric pressure exhibit appreciable ductility when strained under high hydrostatic pressure. This effect has been reported for beryllium by Stack and Bob-rowsky2 and by Carpentier et al.3 and has been attributed to the operation of pyramidal slip systems with slip vectors inclined to the basal plane while cleavage or fracture is suppressed.4 That such slip may occur simply by the application of pressure alone without external straining (pressure-cycling) is suggested by the results on polycrystalline zinc5 and polycrystalline beryllium,6 where nonbasal dislocations with a vector (1123) were reported. A significant improvement in the ductility of the bee metal chromium by pressure-cycling has been reported.7 On the other hand, limited studies on the pressure-cycling of the hcp metals zinc67819 and beryllium6 indicated no improvement in ductility; there only occurred an increase in the yield and ultimate strengths. The study on beryllium was limited to hot-pressed material. Consequently, additional studies on the effects of pressure-cycling on other forms of beryllium seemed desirable, especially since for chromium some authors10 have been unable to detect any improvement in ductility while others find a large improvement.7 That the ductility of polycrystalline beryllium at atmospheric pressure might be improved by prior straining under hydrostatic pressure was suggested by the known beneficial effects of cold work on the ductile-to-brittle transition temperature in the bee metals. It was reasoned that, by straining under hydrostatic pressure, fracture would be suppressed, and during the propagation of slip from one grain to its neighbor dislocations with a vector inclined to the basal plane"-'4 would operate. Upon subsequent straining at atmospheric pressure, these dislocations with a nonbasal vector would continue to operate and thereby reduce the tendency for fracture to occur, by assisting in the propagation of slip across grain boundaries and by interacting with any cracks that may develop. It was recognized that maximum improvement in ductility would probably occur at some optimum amount of prestrain under hydrostatic pressure. If the pre-strain was too small, an insufficient number of dislocations with a nonbasal vector would be activated; if it was too large, internal stresses (work hardening) might increase the flow stress more than the fracture stress, or incipient cracks or other damage could develop. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE 1) Materials and Specimen Preparation. The materials employed in this investigation consisted of hot-pressed block (General Astrometals, CR grade), extruded rod (General Astrometals, GB-2 grade with a reduction ratio of 8:1), and cross-rolled sheet (Brush S200, 0.065 in. thick). The analyses of these materials and mechanical properties at room temperature and atmospheric pressure are given in Table I. The grain size of the hot-pressed block was 15 to 16 µ, that of the extruded rod 10 to 11 µ, and that of the sheet 7 to 10 µ in the rolling plane and 5 to 6 µ in the thickness, all determined by the linear intercept method. Bureau of Mines investigated the progressive impact that petroleum (crude oil and condensate) operations in the Gulf of Mexico have had on onshore operations and the expected effect of increasing activities in this area on future petroleum supplies from domestic sources. The data analyzed include capital expenditures, number of wells drilled, success ratio for exploratory wells, daily production per completion, annual producing rates, and oil reserves. The report compares offshore and onshore data and ascertains trends in petroleum industry operations. Observed data and trends indicate that in the near future Gulf of Mexico development and production will continue to increase relative to total U.S. petroleum activity. By 1975 annual oil and condensate production from the Gulf of Mexico is expected to be in the range of 750 million bbl to 1,150 million bbl, and account for approximately 20 to 30 pct of the estimated total domestic production.

In any event, powder metallurgy is expanding at high speed and making an important impact on the production of iron and steel products. Some indication of the faith in the future market may be indicated by the commencement of three new powder production plants in Canada with a total capacity of 136,000 tons annually."

With increased stripping ratios and with dwindling ore content, the mining fraternity is increasingly turning to larger and larger equipment for profitable open pit operations. The availability of higher horsepower prime movers and increased capacity electric transmissions using either wheel mounted or axle mounted traction motors makes a reality of single axle, rear dump trucks having 150 to 250 ton capacity. The size of electric loading shovels is inherently geared to the size of haulage equipment. To work effectively with this new generation of trucks, the Harnischfeger Corporation has introduced its P&H Model 2800 with a capacity of 20 to 25 cubic yards and a working weight of nearly 1,500,000 pounds. The Model 2800, depicted in Figure 1 loading a 200 ton truck, has many new electric and mechanical features designed to give excellent production and low cost operation. Chief among the new features is the ELECTRO TORQUE* control system. ELECTROTORQUE is a completely static, solid state electronic system supplying controlled power both to the armature and to the fields of the d.c. shovel drive motors. It eliminates many major electrical rotating machines and their attendant maintenance. The system was developed jointly by ASEA of Sweden and Harnischfeger Corporation.

RECENT work by the authors1 has demonstrated that the crystals constituting the equiaxed zone in small ingots originate, on quenching, in the chilled liquid. Whether any partial remelting2 takes place of the den-drites nucleated in the chilled region was not examined. However, the claim3 that this normally occurs, leading to crystal multiplication, has been disputed.4 Thus, for an equiaxed zone to form in the central region of an otherwise columnar ingot, it is necessary to transport crystallites from the chill zone to this region. In view of the work of Uhlmann et al.,5 it was considered desirable to examine the transport process further. Experimental Technique and Results. In the earlier experiments by the authors.1 a stainless-steel crucible 17/8 in. diam, 41/2 in. high, ad containing an alloy of A1-4 wt pct Cu, was quenched from 660°C into a bath of Wood's metal maintained at 100°C. Under these conditions a central zone of equiaxed crystals was obtained. However, if a 2250-G unidirectional magnetic field was applied for 2 sec immediately following the instant of quenching, or subsequently, the equiaxed zone did not appear. Careful thermal analysis showed that the short application of the field had virtually no effect on the thermal conditions of the melt. It thus appeared that the crystallites which were ultimately to grow large enough to form the equiaxed zone existed in the liquid immediately ahead of the interface, occlusion being prevented by the convective fluid flow induced by freezing from the walls of the cylinder. When this relative movement was prevented by the Lorenz forces induced by the application of the magnetic field, the crystallites were caught up in the rapidly advancing dendrite solid-liquid interface. To test this assumption, a small ingot of super-purity aluminum was partially melted and poured into a heated stainless-steel mold which was then immediately quenched into molten Wood's alloy. The resulting structure is shown in Fig. 1, and consists of columnar grains with a central fine-grained zone. Thus the unmelted solid present at the beginning of solidification had been transported ahead of the columnar interface. Discussion. There appears to be little or no information available on the interaction of suspended particles with a metallic solid/liquid interface. Excessive injection pressures in water injection wells may create deeply penetrating fractures, or may open up existing reservoir fractures. If these fractures are oriented toward offset producing wells, oil recovery at injected water breakthrough and ultimate recovery will be impaired. A method of calculating fracture lengths from pressure fall-off test data is presented. The method is based on a linear flow model that simulates conditions present during the early-time period after shutting in an injection well. Fracture lengths can be calculated directly if formation permeability is known. A graphical technique is presented that provides fracture lengths based on permeabilities calculated from normal fall-off tests, where those permeabilities are adjusted for flow geometry. Test data from four injection wells and results obtained from applying the method to these wells are discussed. Introduction Rates of water injection into nonstimulated wells in low permeability reservoirs frequently fall below economically desirable levels. Therefore, some form of stimulation such as hydraulic fracturing often is performed on these wells. Usually these fractures penetrate a short distance from the well — short as compared with interwell spacing — and therefore should not create problems of water channeling to offset producing wells. In the past, some operators have been tempted to increase injection pressures continually to maintain a specified injection rate. But pressures cannot be increased indefinitely. Field data indicate that continued injection above fracture opening pressure can cause excessively long fractures to approach between well distances. If these long fractures intersect or closely approach offset producing wells, premature water breakthrough can result. It is difficult to seal effectively these fractures by various workover procedures after premature water breakthrough has occurred. This paper describes testing procedures that are potentially capable of detecting premature water breakthrough before it occurs. Knowledge of fracture lengths and fracture opening pressures can assist field engineers in selecting optimum operating conditions for water injection wells. Fracture lengths should be calculated from pressure fall-off tests on injection wells, and maximum permissible iniection pressures should be determined from step-rate injectivity tests. Equipped with this information, the field engineer is in a better position to recommend for a particular injection well the optimum operating conditions that will lessen the chances of channeling to offset producers. Historically, pressure transient tests have been conducted primarily on producing wells and analysis procedures have been based on radial flow concepts. Several authors have suggested that these same procedures be applied to tests conducted on water injection wells. This application is justified for wells that are not connected to extensive fracture systems. However, if the formation is severely fractured, the interpretation methods must be modified. Several authors have presented the pressure response of various systems that are intended to simulate reservoir conditions. A paper by Russell and Truitt* on vertically fractured svstems is probablv the most useful from the standpoint bf the fieid engineer. Russell and Truitt presented the pressure-vs-time behavior of a well connected to vertical fractures with various fixed lengths. Their permeability adjustment technique is used in this paper to refine methods of calculating fracture length and interwell permeability. Theory and Definitions Three flow-system geometries are considered in analyzing injection well test data. These various geometries are applicable during specific time intervals of transient pressure tests. Schematic drawings of the flow models, and the time intervals over which they are applicable, are shown in Fig. 1 in the chronological order that they are applied to the pressure response of water injection wells in fractured formations. The very early response is simulated by an infinite linear system as shown in Fig. 1A. This representation permits the calculation of matrix surface area exposed to the fracture. The model shown in Fig. 1B is identical with the one studied by Russell and Truitt. They evaluated the transient pressure response of this vertically fractured system by finite difference techniques. The results were presented as tabulations of dimensionless pressure drop functions for a range of fracture lengths. A semilog plot of these data shows that the apparent matrix permeability can be related to the true matrix permeability by a simple exponential function. Their adjustment factor is used in this paper to improve the accuracy of matrix-permeability and fracture-length calculations.
