The ever-increasing need to guard against stream pollution has intensified interest in the problems of handling and disposing of flotation tailing. Therefore, the Bureau of Mines investigated the possibility of using crushed washery refuse to adsorb the free water in thickened flotation tailings on a bench scale and then in a pilot plant because the conventional methods of disposing of coal flotation tailings--impounding them or filtering them so they are dry enough to be conveyed to the refuse dump--are sometimes either impractical because of space limitations or costly because of low filter capacity. Most of the refuse samples tested were of similar mineralogical composition and exhibited similar water retention capability. The amount of crushed refuse required to adsorb the water in a particular tailing was influenced greatly by the fineness of the solids in the tailing and hence the percentage of solids to which it could be thickened. The ratio of crushed refuse to tailing solids required to provide a mixture dry enough to be carried on an inclined conveyor belt varied from 2.4 to 6.4. Several chemical agents that were tested were very effective in turning the free water in tailings into a stable gel. Fly ash also was very effective in adsorbing water.

The metallic ore deposits vary widely in age and type and their geologic settings are similarly diverse. A brief resume of the region's physiographic characteristics and geology sets the framework for the selected ore districts that are described in following papers and makes it possible to place these ore deposits in their proper reference to space and time.

INTRODUCTION * The United States is fortunate in having enormous reserves of metallurgical-grade coals. Although these coals are better in quality and more accessible than most coals found throughout the rest of the world, the best grades of these coals are being depleted. Consequently, more efficient exploration tools and techniques, such as advanced methods of core drilling and logging, correlation by palynology,** stratigraphy, paleontology and petrography are being used to help assess the extent and quality of the remaining coal reserves. Exploration and assessment of new and existing coal properties become of utmost importance in determining (1) the economic justification for mining the coal, (2) the optimum design of the preparation plant and (3) the most effective use of the coal. Fortunately, the cost of mining coal has remained stable because of better mine planning, more efficient operations and increased mechanization of mining operations. However, increased mechanization raises the amount of impurities in the coal mined, and this requires more and better coal beneficiation to meet the more stringent quality requirements set by the market. Besides, mechanical miners also produce relatively fine coal and, to ensure maximum liberation of impurities, much of the coal presently being used must be crushed to a finer size prior to preparation. The bulk of all coals presently used in this country is mechanically cleaned, much of it at a lower specific gravity than in the past. This necessitates the use of new and improved processes and equipment for coal washing and recovery, such as heavy-medium cyclones and vessels, and froth flotation cells. However, because wet-cleaning processes are pre- dominant in the United States and fine coal retains large amounts of moisture, the increased production of cleaned fine coal accentuates the need for new or improved methods and equipment for dewatering and drying this coal. The larger amounts of coal being beneficiated and the use of new and improved beneficiation processes will aid in controlling and ultimately eliminating sources of pollution. Modem coal markets demand coals that meet rigid specifications. Most coals are purchased under contracts that specify moisture, ash, and sulfur contents, or heating value, depending upon the end use. There has also been a growing trend toward specifying other properties, including particle size and coking capability. For many years it has been considered that an average of 50 percent of the coal in the deposits exploited has been recovered. Owing to many changes in mining methods during the past two decades, this study was initiated to obtain an up-to-date measurement of recovery percentage and thus establish part of the basis from which presently recoverable reserves may be estimated. Recovery percentages were determined within mined areas of 200 underground coal mines. These comprised a statistical sample selected to be representative of operating mines in relation to their significance to depletion of reserves. The results ranged from 29 to 91 percent and averaged 57.0 ± 1.7 percent (95-percent confidence limit). Six factors were identified mathematically as significantly affecting recovery percentages: (1) Pillaring system, (2) top rock and conditions, (3) bottom rock and conditions, (4) marketability, (5) coalbed thickness, and (6) productivity. Skill and attitude of mine operators toward recovery, although not measured, were probable factors. Five other variables that were tested did not show any significant relationship with recovery percentages. Also, five mining equipment features were identified, through discussions with mine officials, as affecting adversely recovery percentage at some mines.

This report gives the result of investigations of coals of different rank, coal com¬ponents, chemically and thermally treated and irradiated coals, and sedimented organic matter. In most studies the arbitrary parameters obtained from the usual quantitative profile analyses are not given largely because they lack physical meaning. Instead comp interpretations are offered. X-ray patterns of high-volatile bituminous and lower rank coals are not self¬-sufficient for structural interpretation by the methods of analysis developed to date. The patterns of hydrogenated and dehydrogenated coals indicate that the basic change in the structure of bituminous coals with increase in rank is the conversion of alicyclic structures into aromatic layers. In low-rank anthracites the aromatic layers are about 10 A in size. The increase in rank is the result of coalescence of layers. High-rank anthracites have layer sizes of 25 to 40 A and exhibit the development of three-dimensional (hkl) reflections of graphite, indicating ordering of adjacent layers. In meta-anthracites the layers are > 1000 A and the basic structure is that of defective crystalline graphite. The well-known petrographic components in low-rank coals have different structures; the differences dissappear in low-volatile bituminous and higher rank coals. The patterns of sedimented organic matter, except impsonites, differ from those of coal hydrogen contents are high, and their X-ray patterns are consistent with those of structures. In contrast to normal coals, the patterns of uranium-bearing coals show increased diffuseness with decrease in hydrogen content. The diffuseness is accompanied by increase in the uranium content of the coal. It is very likely that high uranium-bearing coals have predominantly tetrahedral structures.

A series of studies of emissions from large coal-fired steam generators have included measurements of the concentrations of oxides of sulfur and oxides of notrogen. The sampling equipment, method of sampling, and analytical techniques used for processing of these samples are detailed. A method based on the precipitation of benzidine sulfate was developed for determining both SO3 and total oxides of sulfur in the presence of interfering acidic components in the stack gases. In addition, difficulties encountered with sampling and analytical techniques are also described.

The effects of adding boron and boron plus carbon to electrorefined vanadium were evaluated with respect to mechanical properties at low temperatures and response to heat treatment. Grain size was significantly decreased with the addition of 0.05 percent boron, the decreases ranging from 30 percent at 800° C to 75 percent at 1,100° C. Increasing the boron content resulted in only a small increase in strength at room temperature, but at 77° K, boron contents of 0.005 to 0.076 percent increased the yield strength of vanadium over 50 percent, from 70,000 psi to 110,000 psi. When boron and carbon were present together, the individual grain-refining effects obtained with either element were retained. Approximately a twofold increase in strength was obtained by age-hardening the alloys containing both boron and carbon. Alloys with only boron additions did not age-harden.

The copper deposit at White Pine, Michigan, from which a little more than 5 per cent of United States primary copper currently is produced, is a large stratiform orebody, 4 to 25 feet thick and several miles across. The present ore column, containing about 1.2 per cent copper as chalcocite and native copper, is confined to the basal beds of the Nonesuch Shale. This upper Keweenawan (Upper Precambrian) formation is a distinctive gray siltstone unit, about 600 feet thick, overlying and overlain by thick red-bed sequences. All these rocks contain abundant volcanic debris, but the latest known igneous activity within 50 miles antedated the Nonesuch Shale. The rocks are unmetamorphosed and only moderately deformed, mainly by tilting and faults. Pyrite, presumably syngenetic, is the only prominent sulfide throughout most of the Nonesuch Shale. The basal beds of the formation, however, contain disseminated copper minerals instead of pyrite and constitute the cupriferous zone. On a regional scale, the top of the cupriferous zone cuts across bedding, and ranges from an inch or so above the base of the formation in some areas to more than 50 feet in others. However, within the cupriferous zone the distribution of copper shows remarkable stratigraphic control. Certain beds are copper-rich compared to the beds that lie between them and the differences persist throughout the White Pine region. Several darkgray thinly laminated beds in the lower 10 to 25 feet of the Nonesuch Shale are rich enough and sufficiently close enough together to constitute a mineable thickness where they lie within the cupriferous zone. Pyrite is the characteristic sulfide of the Nonesuch Shale as a whole. The principal sulfide mineral of the cupriferous zone at the base of the formation is chalcocite. The succession of minerals outward and upward from the center of the cupriferous zone is native copper-chalcocite-bornite-chalcopyrite- pyrite. The bornite and chalcopyrite are confined to a narrow fringe at the margin of the cupriferous zone. This pattern of mineral zones is believed to represent reaction between syngenetic pyrite and introduced copper. The main copper mineralization is independent of structure and apparently antedates deformation. Details of the geometry of the cupriferous zone indicate the possibility that copper was introduced from the underlying sandstone prior to lithification. The source of the mineralizing solutions and their copper is not known.

In terms of present metal prices, analysis of extant records of the Eureka district indicate past production of the magnitude of $200,000,000 in recovered silver, lead, and gold. Production to date has been thoroughly oxidized ore from massive replacements, fissures, manta, and pipe-like bodies-in large part from the massive Eldorado (middle Cambrian) and Hamburg (middle to late Cambrian) dolomite horizons. In the productive area of about 6 square miles carbonate rocks comprise 80 per cent of the section, which includes early Cambrian to late Ordovician horizons. Four-fifths or more of the district's production came from a block of Eldorado dolomite in Ruby Hill that was moved in over younger horizons on strands of a regional thrust fault. The lower 500 to 600 feet of the block was much fractured and brecciated and became host to the ores. The Ruby Hill fault, a late normal fault, limits the Ruby Hill block of dolomite on the north for its entire length of nearly a mile and terminates the downward extent and exploitation of its ores. It introduced an hiatus of some 40 years in the district's development. Drilling of the past 20-odd years, followed by underground work, has now exposed the down-faulted extension of the Ruby Hill block of Eldorado dolomite and its contained ores, dropped 1800 feet in a dip shift to depths beneath the surface of 2000 to 3000 feet. The ores at depth are the sulfide counterpart of those mined in early years on the footwall side of the fault. The ores of the district may be attributed to the same source as the intrusive quartz diorite outcropping in a limited way south of Ruby Hill but found at depth elsewhere in drill holes. The long north-south axis of the district, its anticlinal structure, its major faults, and the distribution of the intrusives and, in their relation to the surface, the ores themselves, all suggest that erosion has not cut deep enough to expose the extent of intrusives and the ores consequent upon them.

The Bureau of Mines has been active in promoting the purchase of coal for Government use under specifications that define the requirements in terms of heating value of the coal, expressed in British thermal units, and the composition as shown by proximate analyses. To these, when required, are added the ash-softening temperature, the free-swelling index, and the Hardgrove grindability index. Under most of these specification contracts the bidders guarantee the quality of the coal, and that guaranteed by the successful bidder becomes the standard of his contract. The deliveries are sampled in accordance with instructions3 issued by the Bureau of Mines; the samples are analyzed in the Bureau laboratory to determine whether the coal is of the quality guaranteed by the contractor; if it is not, a price adjustment is made. Analyses of the delivered coal and tipple samples (samples collected at mine tipples as coal is being loaded into railroad cars or trucks) provide valuable data for use in evaluating future bids. In addition, the continuous sampling of coal as delivered is a check on the practical results obtained in burning the coal.

The uranium-producing areas near Marysvale, Utah provide an unusual group of veins and replacement deposits associated with a Pliocene-Oligocene intrusive and extrusive igneous complex. Aside from several scattered occurrences in older volcanics, uranium-bearing veins occur in intrusive quartz monzonite or granite and in nearby rhyolite. The veins in general trend within a few degrees of N55-65°E, are more or less vertical, and are found along the western margins of a quartz monzonite intrusive. The replacement deposits are found in rhyolite intrusives and also in the lower portions of rhyolite flows close to places where veins forming solutions rising through quartz monzonite came into contact with the rhyolite. At least 14 veins have been mined since uranium mining operations began at Marysvale some 16 years ago, while ore has been extracted through about 10 miles of underground workings. The active mmmg area is approximately 3000 feet long and in the central portion 1500 feet wide. Ores have been found over a vertical spread of almost 2000 feet, between the highest occurrence on Jungfrau Hill ( ca. 7200 feet) and the deepest discovery of ore in a drill hole near the Prospector Mine (ca. 5200 feet). Under existing mining and marketing conditions, mining along the veins in the main area appears to have reached an economic limit at about 500-600 feet below the surface. However, orebodies in the rhyolite and in the upper portions of veins close to the rhyolite are subject to active mining. Isotopic dates indicate that the uraninitebearing veins and replacements are late Miocene or Pliocene (ca. 10-13 m.y.), the rhyolite is Miocene (avg. 17.5 m.y.), and the quartz monzonite and granite intrusives are late Oligocene (23.6 to 26.0 m.y.). The older Bullion Canyon Volcanic Series which encircles the area is Oligocene (28 to 31.1 m.y.). Two generations of alteration occur: ( 1) Earlier alunitic veins and replacement bodies are found in the Bullion Canyon Volcanic Series, none of which have produced uranium; (2) Later argillic alteration associated with the introduction of uranium is found along veins, replacing glassy rhyolite dikes and replacing phases of the rhyolite.

According to the 1966 Bureau of Mines Mineral Year Book only three states reported production of lignite in that year. These state: were North Dakota, Montana, and South Dakota; although it is known that there is production of lignite in Texas, California and, perhaps, Arkansas. In the year 1966 North Dakota produced 3,543,000 tons of lignite, Montana produced 328,000 tons of lignite, and South Dakota produced 10,000 tons of lignite. In view of the fact that North Dakota produces approximately 95 per cent of all the lignite reported in the United States, in discussing lignite mining, my remarks will be confined to lignite mining as conducted in North Dakota and will be confined to the production of lignite by stripping methods, as this is the predominate method used today. The first lignite mining in Worth Dakota, undoubtedly, was done by people settling in the western part of the state where wood was scarce and where lignite is exposed in the banks of creeks and ravines. The first production records were kept in 1884 and indicate that 35,000 tons of lignite were mined that year. The growth of the lignite industry has been very slow during the intervening period, but in 1966 production started to increase, and it is now indicated that production in the next few years may approach 6,000,000 tons per year. Ninety-seven per cent of the lignite produced in the lignite area of the Midwest is utilized in the generation of electric power, and it is anticipated that this use will predominate during the next two decades.

This report presents prediction equations for eleven factors indicative of metallurgical coal quality which have been developed from data obtainable during exploration. Five coke strength parameters and six carbonization product yields have been predicted for coking coals having volatile matter contents in the range 16.3 to 42.1 percent, dry basis. The prediction models developed contain information from the proximate and ultimate analyses, the size consist, and the petrographic composition of coking coals carbonized in BM-AGA retorts at 800°, 900°, and 1,000°C. The equations reported have been evaluated with independent data derived from the 900°C carbonization of 33 binary blends. Present results show that metallurgical coal quality can be predicted ahead of mining. Capability to forecast coal quality is useful in mine planning and should provide basic information for optimization of blending and crushing techniques, leading to the production of uniform coke.

An acceptable source of concrete aggregate is available in Kansas City in a continuous, medium bedded, slightly dipping limestone unit. Removal is accomplished in shallow depth, 12 feet to 17 feet high, room and pillar mines. The accepted empirical design spaces 20 foot pillars 60 feet on center. A portion of the 20 foot unit is left in place for roof support. Rock and soil cover is variable to 100± feet maximum. Long-term stability of these mines is affected by numerous factors, including the above mine-rock profile, ground water conditions and mining practice. Crusher-run aggregate sells at the mine for $2.20 per ton, yielding a gross income of $2.00 to $2.80 per square foot of mine. Use of mine space for real estate development requires a new perspective in mine development. Mining practices to obtain long term stabile structures can become an over-riding factor as compared with minimum production costs and maximum extraction ratios. Poorly mined areas are unusuable for secondary purposes. Development cost for lease space in less desirable mines is substantially greater than those planned for a secondary use. Real estate development in mine space involves unique engineering problems. Properly engineered developments offer singular advantages. Warehouse lease space sells for $.50 to $1.00 per square foot per year; fully developed office areas may double these values.

An experimental technique has been developed for carrying out a dynamic tensile stress-strain test in which plastic strain is measured continuously throughout the microstrain region extending through the macroflow region to total deformations of 5 pet. The tests were carried out on niobium, samples having interstitial impurity levels of 160 and -800 ppm at temperatures ranging from room temperature down to 100°K. A band spectrum of activation energies was obtained from calculations based on the measured activation volumes and temperature dependence of flow stress. The inability of a single rate-controlling process to predict such a phenomenon has led to the proposal that several sequential rate-controlling dislocation mechanisms are operative in the preyield micro-strain region. These are thought to be: the motion of geometrical kinks, the formation of double kinks in edges, and finally in the macrostrain region the formation of double kinks in screws. In less pure niobium the effect of interstitial impurities is shown to be dominant in the microstrain region, suggesting that a fourth probable mechanism is overcoming interstitial barriers instead of geometrical kink motion and the formation of double kinks in edge dislocations. THE principal fundamental aim of most mechanical properties studies of crystalline solids is to determine the dislocation mechanisms responsible for the plastic behavior. The extension of such studies to the region of preyield microstrain behavior has received renewed attention in the past few years as the details of macroscopic flow behavior have become better understood. For the most part, microstrain studies have been carried out using one of two variations of a single experimental technique.1 The first method involves loading the sample at a constant extension rate to a predetermined stress level (less than the macroscopic yield stress), instantaneously unloading, and then determining the extent of plastic deformation to a sensitivity of 10"6. The microscopic stress-strain curve is then constructed from the results of a repeated series of such individual measurements, each of which involves loading to an incrementally higher stress level, by relating the accumulated plastic microstrain for each step to the maximum applied stress in that step. The second variation, also carried out by step-wise increases in stress, measures the total strain to a sensitivity of ~10"6 and relates the maximum stress to the area of closed hysteresis loops that are generated under certain conditions (namely, prestrained samples). The foregoing methods have yielded interesting information about the nature of preyield deformation and plastic response to stresses below the yield stress, but they offer certain disadvantages for studying the dynamic behavior of dislocations. In the first method it is physically impossible to specify a plastic strain rate inasmuch as the test sample is reexposed, as it is loaded to its maximum stress in a particular step, to lower stresses at which flow will take place. The strain corresponding to a given stress level on the stress-microstrain curve thus generated will then always be greater than that at the corresponding stress level of a truly dynamic test carried out at the same extension rate. The second method has been used to obtain correlations with dynamic macroscopic flow parameters by applying dislocation damping theory to the hysteresis loop areas.2 The approach has had some success but suffers in that only samples that have been prestrained a few percent can be studied. Most brittle solids are relatively weak in tension and this weakness can be very significant in determining their performance in structures and excavations. Consequently, accurate knowledge of the tensile strength of brittle materials has long been recognized as important. In the past, measurements of the tensile strength of materials such as concrete, ceramics, and particularly rock have been hindered by problems encountered in fabricating test specimens and in accurately loading them. These difficulties have resulted in a scarcity of published tensile strength data. This can be readily seen in tabulations such as Wuerker's "Annotated Tables of Strength and Elastic Properties of Rocks.

Calculations are presented for the design of a silicon photodiode in which the incident light beam makes multiple passes between the detector surfaces. Total internal reflection is used for this "light-trapping" effect. By this means, the optical path length can be extended to several millimeters, while the electrode separation remains less than 102 cm, as required for nanosecond response time. Data are presented for a Schottky barrier photodiode constructed on a multiply reflecting silicon base wafer. It is shown that the long-wavelength response is considerably extended in such structures without a corresponding sacrifice in high-speed response. The development of efficient and powerful lasers at 1.06 p has stimulated interest in detectors which operate at this wavelength. In typical silicon photodiodes, for detecting 1.06 p radiation, the requirements for high speed and high sensitivity are mutually exclusive. Since the absorption coefficient is only 25 cm-', a lo-'-cm path length is required to absorb 92 pct of the incident 1.06 p radiation. If the electrode separation is greater than 10 cm, however, the carrier transit time will be greater than 1 nsec. This problem can be solved by allowing the incident light beam to make multiple passes between the electrodes. The optical path length can then be extended to several millimeters, as required for complete absorption, while the electrode separation remains less than 10' cm, as required for nanosecond response time. In a typical photodiode geometry, one ohmic contact and one rectifying contact are formed on the two opposite surfaces of a base wafer, and the wafer thickness determines the electrode separation. The objective of the multiple reflection design is to allow all 1.06 p radiation to enter the detector front surface and to form the back detector surface so that no 1.06 radiation can exit. Total internal reflection at the back detector surface is well-suited for light trapping of 1.06 p radiation because the relatively large dielectric constant of silicon leads to a critical angle of 16.5 deg for total internal reflection. LIGHT TRAPPING It is well-known that, as light passes from one medium such as air into another medium such as glass or silicon, the angle of refraction is always less than the angle of incidence. In the limiting case, where the incident rays approach an angle of 90 deg with the normal, the refracted rays approach a fixed angle +, beyond which no refraction is possible: this is called the critical angle. It follows from Snell's law that where = critical angle, n - index of refraction of air, n' - index of refraction of the medium. Applying the principle of reversibility of light rays, all internal angles of incidence greater than +, will produce total internal reflection and "light trapping". The index of refraction of silicon at 1.06 p is 3.5,' and the critical angle is thus 16.5 deg. Fig. 1 shows these relationships for silicon. This very small critical angle in silicon is significant because all incident angles between 16.5 and 90 deg will produce total internal reflection and "light trapping". This effect can be implemented with a "prismlike" geometry, so that incident light can be introduced into the sample without loss and "trapped". PHOTOSIGNALS A precise knowledge of the absorption coefficient at 1.06 in silicon is of critical importance to the design of fast and efficient silicon photodiodes for 1.06 radiation. Dash and newman2 show a value of 25 cm-l, and our measurements have corroborated this value. Assuming that the collection of photoinduced minority carriers is perfect, the quantum efficiency of a photodiode is dependent only on the absorption coefficient. It then follows from Lambert's law that where QE is the quantum efficiency in pct, a is the absorption coefficient, d is the optical path length, and the reflectivity at the surface is assumed to be completely suppressed by an optical interference layer. Fig. 2 gives the maximum quantum efficiency for 1.06p radiation of a silicon photodiode with optical path length d, using Eq. [2]. The ultimate response time of a fully depleted photodiode to an incident light pulse can be considered to be the arrival times of all photoinduced carriers at the contacts, i.e., the minority carriers at the junction interface and the majority carriers at the oppo-

A pilot plant for treating mine drainage by neutralization with limestone was designed, fabricated, and operated by the Bureau of Mines. The process consists of (1) producing a very fine (minus 400-mesh) limestone slurry, (2) mixing the slurry with the mine water, (3) aerating the resulting mixture to remove carbon dioxide and precipitate iron, and (4) separating the solids from the liquid by sedimentation. A mine discharge of pH 2.8, containing 1,700 ppm total acidity, 36 ppm ferrous iron, and 360 ppm total iron, was treated at rates from 300 to 400 gpm. The treated water ultimately reached a pH of 7.4 and contained no detectable iron. The resulting sludge compacted to approximately one-third the volume of sludge from mine water neutralized with lime. The advantages of the limestone process, compared with the conventional lime process are as follows: Widespread distribution and lower cost of run-of-mine, indigenous limestone; simplicity of plant design; reduced hazards and plant operating and maintenance costs accruing from the use of a less reactive chemical agent; higher solids concentration of the precipitated sludge; and no deleterious effect caused by accidental overtreatment. While total process costs could not be determined, it is conservatively estimated that the cost of treating mine water by the limestone process is one-third to one-half the cost of the lime process, depending on the characteristics of the water to be treated and the availability and quality of limestone used.
