Several high-temperature eutectics of cobalt and nickel alloys were modified by small additions of selected elements. Thes-e alloys were compared to unmodified melts for microstructural variations. A few modified compositions were selected on the basis of structure and their tensile and stress-rupture behavior determined. The results of stress-rupture tests in air at 1800 F and room-temperature tensile tests of four high-temperature eutectics showed modification capable of producing substantial improvements in properties. The microstructures were altered and mechanical properties improved by: a.) dispersing a subordinate phase more uniformly throughout the matrix; b) replacing large continuous -network or platelike constituents with small equiaxed discontinuous phases; and c) by forming new, finely divided phases. tHE term "modification" is most commonly used to describe the refinement in microstructure of the Al-Si eutectic that occurs as a result of rapid cooling from the melt or on slow cooling after treatment with small amounts of sodium.1 "Modification" has also been used to describe the change from flake to spheroidal graphite in the austenite-graphite eutectic of cast iron.2 This change of graphite shape is accomplished by small additions of cerium or magnesium.3 Other systems have also been shown to be capable of modification, for example: Pb-Sn by copper;4 Al-Cu by sodium;5 Al-Mn by sodium;5 and Pb-Sb by aluminum.5 Although modification of Al-Si alloys and cast irons is usually accompanied by improved mechanical properties, a general definition of modification has been suggested to include the effect of small quantities of impurity elements on the microstructures of all eutectic alloys, regardless of the effect on the mechanical properties.6 In this paper, the term "modification" is employed in a broad sense to include the formation of third phases or even the supplanting of one of the binary eutectic phases by a third phase. The mechanism of modification, as for any solidification phenomenon, must be considered primarily in terms of nucleation and growth. Although both nuclea-tion and growth mechanisms are required to explain all the phenomena observed in connection with the solidification of modified eutectics, various investigators have usually favored one or the other.7"16 It has been shown that modification of a binary eutectic can be effected by addition of a solute element that has greatly different distribution coefficients or k values in the two phases of the eutectic. Under these conditions, differences in the temperatures at the solid-liquid interfaces of the two phases retard the growth of one phase with respect to the other.4 It has also been shown that increased undercooling favors a transition from a rodlike eutectic to a globular eutectic.17 A mechanism proposed for the transition from lamellar to rodlike eutectics depends on the concept of constitutional super cooling.18 The modification of eutectic alloys may be of interest for high-temperature service as well as at room temperature. Although "high-temperature eutectic alloys" may appear to be a contradiction in terms, many eutectic systems, including those studied in this work, have melting points in excess of 2400°F. One of the mechanisms by which high-temperature alloys are strengthened is dispersion of a relatively brittle phase such as an oxide, carbide, or an inter-metallic compound throughout a ductile matrix. For a given volume fraction of dispersed phase, strength is increased by decreasing the size and spacing of the dispersed particles.19'20 Furthermore, room-temperature ductility may also be increased by changing the shape of a brittle dispersed phase from platelike to equiaxed or spheroidal.8 Overaging and redissolving of the secondary phase limit the maximum temperature to which precipitation-hardened alloys can be used. However, in a binary eutectic system, both phases coexist up to the melting point. Although all eutectic structures are not completely stable,21 a dispersion-hardened cast high-temperature alloy might result if a fine distribution of one of the eutectic phases could be obtained during solidification. An additional reason for interest in eutectic alloys is their excellent castability.22 Since eutectic alloys, like pure metals, freeze at a single temperature rather than over a range of temperatures, their castability is superior to solid-solution alloys with long liquidus to solidus ranges. The purpose of this research was to study the effects of small solute additions on the microstructure and mechanical properties of a number of high-melting-point eutectic compositions.

"Aerial surveys of the open pits have been conducted regularly at Lake Asbestos of Quebec, Ltd. -a subsidiary of American Smelting and Re-fining Company -since 1958. Ground controls are supplied by Lake Asbestos, and a topographic map of the pits at a scale of 1 in. to 50 ft., with 2-foot contour intervals, is obtained by aerial photography. The information from the topographic map is then transferred by the Lake Asbestos engineering staff to sections from which the volumes removed are calculated. Considering the size and complexity of the operation, this system has proved to be the cheapest, fastest and most accurate way of determining the quantities of rock and overburden removed. More than 11,000,000 tons of ore and waste are mined each year in three different pits. Further-more, the nature, shape and extent of the orebodies make it necessary to mine on many (up to eight) benches of a pit during a single year. In addition, there are sections of the pits where it is impossible or un-safe to survey the crest of some benches by standard ground methods. For these reasons, the tonnages obtained by truck count are checked and adjusted by aerial survey. These surveys are now taking place every six months. With this system, it is possible for a two-man surveying crew to look after all field work in the mine area."

Experirmental bonds of Ag-In SLID to gold, copper, nickel, Kovar, Dumet, nickel-plated molybdenum, ALL-Pt vrzetallizing on ceramic, and nickel-plated Mo-Ti metallizing on Al2O3 ceramic have been made and exalnined. Metallographic taper sections were made of all bonds for Phase identification. In addition, failuve temperatltres were determined for bonds heated undev shear load. Sowe bonds were subjected to electvon-probe microanalysis. The ternary SLID system Ag-In-Sn was similarly evaluated. Plwtonticrogaphs and electron-probe data are discussed and related to over-all phase diagrams , diffusion effects, and wetting properties of the liquid. The rates of diffusion andor compound formation of gold, silver, and copper in indium and In-Sn liquids are found to descend in that order, as measured by the relatzve thickness of phase layers in the interfaces of bonds made at 200to 400°C. It is concluded that the SLID process enables one to produce bonds which are stable at high temperatures, after having been fabricated at low temperatures, and meet most requirements for application in interconnection, silicon bonding, or hermetic sealing of electronic devices. In a previous publication by one of the authors, the theory and principle of SLID bonding in simple binary systems was discussed. SLID bonding can be defined as a joining process using a preform with a laminated structure: a low-melting material clad on a high-melting core. During the bonding cycle a metallurgical transformation occurs such that the resultant structure can withstand, without reliquefying, temperatures higher than those at which the bond was made. The phases present in the joint interface region are high-melting compounds or, if equilibrium is reached, solid solution. Properties will depend on the phases present, ultimately approaching those of the solid substrate core of the SLID preform. The high-temperature strength of bonds made in these systems was correlated to phase identification in the interfacial bond regions from metallographic cross sections and electron-probe X-ray microanalysis data. When complex electronic components are assembled, multiphase systems result at the interfaces of bond regions. In these ternary and higher-order systems very little diffusion and phase-diagram data is available with which to predict the nature of the interfacia1 region that will result from conventional fabrication processes and subsequent field use of the component. Clarke and Rhines did early work in the field using the Al-Mg-Zn system as a vehicle. Guy and co-workers studied a portion of the Cu-Zn-Ni system and some mathematical4 and general5 aspects of multiphase diffusion. irkald' and coworkerse recently studied diffusion in the Cu-Zn-Sn system. No diffusion studies have been made on ternary systems directly applicable to this investigation but some phase diagrams are available: g-u-n, u-i-n, and CU-i-n. I) DESCRIPTION AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The elements Au, Ag, Cu, Ni, In, and Sn are found in alloy systems commonly used in fabricating and assembling electronic components. Reference to the appropriate phase diagrams9 and the previous publication will indicate that the binary systems of any of the two low-melting elements, indium and tin, with any one of the other four higher-melting elements are capable of producing SLID bonds. It is not unreasonable to assume that any ternary or higher-order alloy system containing at least one of the elements gold, silver, copper, or nickel and one or both of the elements indium and tin could be used to produce bonds which are stable at high temperatures, after having been fabricated at low temperatures. Indeed, the liquidus contours and isothermal sections of those phase diagrams available7 do so indicate. A description of the geometrical characteristics of spherical reservoir systems, a discussion of unsteady-state flow of such systems and examples of engineering applications are presented as backgmund material. The fundamental differential equation, a description of average spherical permeability and the introduction of the Laplace transformation serve as theoretical foundations. Engineering concepts are investigated to indicate particular solutions of interest, which are analytically obtained with the aid of the Laplace transform. These are numerically evaluated by computer, and presented in tabular form. INTRODUCTION A tractable mathematical analysis of unsteady fluid flow through porous media generally requires incorporation of a geometrical symmetry. The simplest forms include the linear, cylindrical (radial) and spherical. Most analytical endeavors have concentrated on cylindrical symmetry because it occurs more often in petroleum reservoirs. Nevertheless, some reservoir systems do exist that are better approximated by spherical geometry. Review of technical literature revealed but a single reference to unsteady spherical flow in petroleum reservoirs.l The motive and purpose of the present work was to remove this gap in technical information, and to provide the practicing engineer with some useful analytical tools. The mathematical details associated with the particular solutions of interest involved use of the Laplace transformation. Hurst and van Everdingen previously demonstrated the efficacy of this operational technique, and in many respects the present treatment was patterned after their earlier work.2 PRELIMINARY CONSIDERATIONS GEOMETRICAL CHARACTERISTICS Geometrically, a spherical reservoir system is defined at any instant of time by two concentric hemispheres whose physical properties of interest vary only with the radial distance. Every physical property is thus restricted to be a space function of only one variable: the distance along a radius vector emanating from the center. Such a system is composed of an outer region and an inner region, separated by a defined internal boundary. The inner region simply extends inward from this boundary, whereas the outer region extends outward from it to an external boundary. The position of the internal boundary is presumed fixed, so that the size of the inner region remains constant. On the other hand, the position of the external boundary at any given instant of time is determined by the distance into the system that a sensible pressure reaction has occurred, Thus, the external boundary may change position with time. It initially emerges from the inner region and advances outward to its ultimate position. When this ultimate position coincides with a geometric limit, the reservoir system is said to be limited. When it coincides with points subject to pressure gradients furthest removed from the internal boundary, yet short of a geometric limit, the system is said to be unlimited. In this investigation two different boundary conditions are imposed at the ultimate boundaries of limited systems. The first requires that no fluid flow occur across this boundary; the second that the pressure remain fixed at this boundary.3-5 UNSTEADY-STATE FLOW In a strict sense virtually all flow phenomena associated with a reservoir system are unsteady-state. The transient behavior of these phenomena requires accounting, however, only when time must be introduced as an explicit variable. Otherwise, steady-state mechanics may be used. Analytically, steady-state conditions prevail in a reservoir system only over that portion of its history when this relation is satisfied:

A prediction for oil recovery from a pilot waterflood in the Kane oil- field, located in Elk, Forest, and McKean Counties, Pa., was made and compared to actual field performance. Water-injection and production histories, well logs, other field data, and results from laboratory tests of core material were used in this analysis. Performance of the pilot waterflood, initiated in January 1963, was predicted using a modified Craig, Geffen, and Morse calculation technique. Maximum recovery from this low permeable, preferentially oil-wet formation was predicted to be about 22,500 barrels of oil after 300,000 barrels of water had been injected into the pilot waterflood area. After additional field data were collected it became necessary to reevaluate the pilot waterflood area. The gas saturation prior to the waterflood was estimated to have been 20 percent, based on an assumption regarding the required volume of water injected to initiate oil production. In view of the actual field performance, a gas saturation of 13 percent is indicated. When this gas saturation and the method originally proposed by Craig and others are used) the predicted results are more representative. In December 1965, field performance was further analyzed using a hyperbolic-decline curve as presented by Arps. Based upon this evaluation method, the pilot water flood in the Kane sand should produce 37,000 to 42,000 barrels of oil with the injection of 300,000 barrels of water into the pattern. By continuing this secondary-recovery project to a reasonable economic limit, ultimate oil recovery may be as much as 50,000 to 55,000 barrels, or 129 to 142 barrels per acre-foot from 36.5 acres.

The Bureau of Mines evaluated 42 composite samples from selected Michigan-Wisconsin iron formations by reductive roasting-magnetic separation and flotation at minus 325 mesh. Samples having poor to marginal response on initial examination by conventional methods were reevaluated by finer grinding, by reagent suite modifications, and by selective flocculation-desliming techniques. Results ranged from excellent on Menominee Range samples to relatively on Gogebic Range ores. Marquette Range samples ranged from responsive to nonresponsive, depending upon grain size and mineral association.

The INPUT electromagnetic prospecting system was originally developed by Dr. A. R. Barringer in an effort to increase the sensitivity and penetration of airborne EM methods. Although brought to an operational state some several years ago, it is only through relatively re-cent modifications and testing that some of the potential of the system has been fully realised. This is brought into perspective by some recent results over known ore deposits and geologic environments.

Some typical thiacyclopentanes and thiacyclohexanes were synthesized to provide reference compounds needed for the identification of sulfur compounds in crude oils. Two general methods of synthesis were employed: (1) cleavage of 2-alkyltetrahydropyrans with hydrogen bromide followed by the reaction of the resulting dibromoalkanes with sodium sulfide and (2) the catlyzed reaction of cyclic ethers or 1)4-or 1)5-alkanediols with hydrogen sulfide. Both methods produced mixtures of 2-alkylthiacyclopentanes and 2-alkylthiacyclohexanes with 2-alkyltetrahydropyran as the starting material. The structures of the reaction products were established by analysis for sulfur; desulfurization; gas-liquid chromatography (GLC); mass, infrared, and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra; and an alternate synthesis. The synthesis of the cyclic sulfides contributed substantially to the identification of 10 members of this class of sulfur compounds in crude oil.

QUITE generally an increase in the temperature tends to bring a system closer to ideality. It is reasonable as a first approximation to consider that the excess free energy will vary linearly with the temperature, or: where t may be defined as the "characteristic temperature" of the solution, or the temperature at which the system would become ideal if the results at T were linearly extrapolated. It must be emphasized that consideration of this hypothetical property is an appeal to intuition rather than an established physical concept. The order of magnitude of 7 for dilute solutions will depend on the nature of the solvent; a value of 3000° + 1000°K may be suggested for ordinary metallic solutions. In terms of free energy, entropy, and enthalpy first-order interaction coefficients, differentiation of the above equations with respect to composition leads to The concept of t offers a simple and plausible interpretation of Chipman and corrigan's3 recent empirical correlation between and a for a number of groups of ternary systems 1-24. Externally generated foam was injected continuously into short porous media. Both flow rate and pressure drop were measured. Liquid saturation was determined by electrical conductivity. Foam yuality I, expressed as the ratio of gas volume to total volume, was varied from 0.70 to 0.96. As measured with a modified fann VG Meter, apparent viscosity of this foam µa decreases with increasing shear rate but usually falls within the range of 50 to 500 cp. At a given shear rate, µa increases almost linearly with I-. When measured with a Bendix Ultraviscoson, kinematic pa is independent of V but absolute pa increases with T from about 3 to 8 cp. The effective permeability -apparent viscosity ratio ke/µa decreases almost linearly with V for porous media of high permeability, but the rate of decrease becomes less for tighter ones. The relative permeability-apparent viscosity ratio kr/µa us V data does not fall on a single line. The kr/µa ratio increases with liquid saturation in the porous medium and with surfactant concentration. Estimates of pa for foam in porous media vary from 30 to 100 cp. INTRODUCTION Although research on the development of a foam-drive, oil recovery process has been going on for almost a decade, most of the significant publications have appeared within the last several years. This illustrates well the rate at which interest in this process is accelerating. Bond and Holbrook 1 were the first to describe the use of foam to improve oil recovery in their patent of 1958. They proposed that an aqueous foaming agent slug be injected into the formation and that this be followed by gas to produce a foam in situ. Fried 2 studied the injection of foam into porous media which had already been subjected to conventional gas or water drives and found that gas could be used to drive a foam bank which would, in turn, displace additional oil in the form of an oil bank. He attributed the increased oil recovery to the high effective viscosity of foam flowing in porous media. His microscopic observations showed the importance of foam generation and regeneration within the porous medium. By injecting both air and aqueous surfactant solution, Bernard3 generated foams within the porous medium in which oil displacement was being studied. In a separate empirical test, he also measured the dynamic foaming characteristics of the same surfactants in water and/or oil. With some exceptions and for the seyen surfactants studied, there seems to be a qualitative relationship between the efficiency of liquid rlisplacrment and the dynamic foaming testtsed. This relationship was not consistent enough to eliminate the necessity of actual foam flood tests in porous media for surfactant selection. In a study basic to gas storage in aquifers, Bennett4 described the displacement of brine by foam in consolidated porous media. Among other things, he stated that the ability of a surfactant solution to foam is more important than the stability of its foam. The presence of a foam bank between the displacing air and the displaced brine improved both breakthrough and ultimate recovery. In a continuation of this work Kolb5 attributed the great reduction in surfactant solution production rate as displacement by air progressed to a decrease in relative permeability to gas. These several effects reported by both Bennett and Kolb can all be attributed to the high apparent viscosity of foam which was obviously flowing in the porous media. Bernard and Holm6 observed that gas permeability in the presence of foam was much less than in the absence of foam when both were measured at the same gas saturations. This reduction in permeability was proportionately greater for more permeable sands and sandstones than for the less permeable. Viscosities of the surfactant solution and air were used for their calculations rather than apparent foam viscosities. The foam stability increased with decreasing permeability, which was probably due to the natural regenerative properties of porous media, and the permeability reduction increased

The reduction zone of the iron blast furnace is represented by a mathematical model of the chemical reactions and heat transfer that occurs between gas and solids during the deoxidation of iron oxide. The model consists of a set of equations and an algorithm whereby the equations may be solved to give the temperature and composition of gas and solids at any position in the reaction zone and at any time after a specified initial state. The model is applied to the special case in which ferric oxide is reduced by graphitic carbon and carbon monoxide produced by burning carbon in dry air. The rate of reduction, carbon consumption and maximum temperature are shown as functions of the temperature and rate of flow of the incoming reducing gas and external heat loss. The model of the reduction zone is the essential part of a general mathematical model for simulation of the iron blast furnace. The simulation model will serve as a research tool to be used in conjunction with an experimental or operating furnace. After the simulation model has been correlated with the real furnace, it is proposed that further experimentation be done mostly with the model. The real furnace will then be operated primarily to test and confirm the model.

Seven samples were analyzed from the major reserves of the Bottom Red Ash bed, Northern anthracite field. The data show variations in thickness and geo-logic structure and in the amount of coal that can be recovered. Recovery of market-grade (less than 17 percent ash) coal is high for all samples, ranging from 76 tp 95 percent in the 3-1/4-by 9/16-inch sizes. The occurrence of coal containing less than 5 percent ash varies from 19.5 to as much as 57.5 percent. Crushing the coarse sizes to minus 9/16 inch increased recovery of market-grade coal in six of seven bed samples. Crushing released sufficient impurities to cause substantial increases in yield of coal containing less than 5 percent ash for all samples. Analyses of the float coal indicate that the quality of coal is comparable for all samples.

An analytical method is developed to determine the variation of the ultimate lateral resistance of a plate in a cohesionless soil with depth. This analysis is based on a modification of Rankine's classical earth pressure theory and the theory of plasticity as applied to soils. The ultimate resistance is defined as the product of the effective stress at the midpoint of the plate, the area of the plate and a dimensionless variable termed the ultimate resistance factor. This variable has been plotted us the depth ratio: i.e., the ratio of of the depth of embedment us the height of the plate. The resistance of a plate may then be calculated using the values af the ultimate resistance factor from the chart provided or the equation may be programmed for use in an analysis of anchor systems in cohesionless soils. It is emphasized that the analysis is semitheoretical. The theory has been compared with experimental results reported in the literature and results indicate general agreement. Actual field tests are necessary to further verify this theory. INTRODUCTION With the exploration for oil offshore in waters all over the world, it is of importance to determine the behavior of the various soils in relation to their ultimate resistance to deformation. Examples of such problems are the holding capacity of anchors and the lateral resistance of piles. Very little information is available in the published literature on the design and performance of anchors, in either cohesive or cohesionless soils. The analysis developed in this report is the first step in obtaining a solution for the determination of anchor holding capacity in a cohesionless material. DISCUSSION The theory used in the analysis is based on the ultimate strength of the soil and is the maximum resistance developed by the plate against further movement. In such a state the elastic deformations are disregarded in comparison with the plastic deformations. Hence, the plate can be considered as completely rigid. The theory of plasticity determines the three unknown stresses at any point by means of two equilibrium conditions for a small earth element in combination with the failure condition. However, the exact solutions can only be carried out in a few simple cases such as, for example, when the rupture or failure lines are straight (Rankine theory) or with spiral and straight rupture lines (Prandtl theory).l Kiitter 2 derived a single equation expressing the variation of the stress in any given rupture line. To utilize this equation, it is necessary to know the stress in the rupture line at a certain point. Unfortunately, this is difficult to obtain unless the rupture line intersects the free surface at a certain angle or when the earth is cohesion-less and unloaded. A method to overcome this is to consider only the boundary conditions at both ends of a rupture line without investigating the equilibrium of the earth above the rupture line. This assumes that the rupture lines meet the surface at statically correct angles, so that boundary stresses may be determined. As Kiitter's equation furnished a relation between these stresses, the unit earth pressure may be calculated at the point where the rupture line meets the wall. Another way in which Kotter's equation may be applied is in investigating the equilibrium of a soil mass above a rupture line. This method assumes that the failure or rupture line is known and that the boundary stresses in the rupture line at the ground surface can be determined. In this case it is possible to determine the earth pressure from the equations of equilibrium.

To evaluate the potential use of battery-powered vehicles, the Bureau of Mines studied the performance of a battery-powered truck propelled by a 9.6 kw dc motor in considerable detail under various driving conditions. Some of the factors investigated were: Gear ratios, payload (1,468 lb maximum), road grade, stops made per mile, and charging time. With the exception of some difficulty with brush wear, operation and maintenance of the truck was generally trouble-free. On range tests carrying an 868-lb payload a distance of about 50 miles at an average speed of about 19 mph in normal driving, the Bureau's battery-powered truck averaged 1.6 to 1.9 miles per ac kwhr input. Stop-and-go tests indicated that prospects for the use of battery-powered trucks in house delivery service within city limits are good; performance of the Bureau truck was sufficiently high for that type of service. The estimated power cost of 2.65 cents per mile while making 10 stops per mile was attractively low from the standpoint of fuel costs.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the effects of tungsten and chromium, separately and combined, on improving the mechanical properties and oxidation resistance of vanadium. Binary and ternary vanadium-base alloys were prepared and tested for oxidation resistance and tensile strength. Softening occurred with less than 1 weight-percent of either tungsten or chromium, followed by strengthening with higher alloying contents. Vanadium alloys containing up to 9.8 weight-percent chromium or 14.1 weight-percent tungsten were more resistant to oxidation in air at 600° C than unalloyed vanadium. For the alloys with 12.20 weight-percent chromium or 14.56 weight-percent: tungsten, the maximum concentrations used, the lower yield strengths were about twice that of 38,600 psi for the unalloyed vanadium. Recrystallization temperatures for these alloys were 100 and 150° C higher, respectively. Alloys containing both chromium and tungsten had properties similar to those of the vanadium-tungsten alloys.

The Bureau of Mines carbonized 35 coal samples from Logan and Mingo Counties) W. Va., at 900° C using the Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association method, and determined yields of products and physical properties of cokes. Twenty samples represented the No.5 Block, Stockton, Chilton, Cedar Grove, Lower Cedar Grove, Alma, No. 2 Gas, and Eagle beds in Logan County, and 15 samples represented the Coalburg, Buffalo Creek, Winifrede, Cedar Grove, Lower Cedar Grove, Alma, and No.2 Gas beds in Mingo County, W. Va, Chemical analyses were determined for all coals. All coals in both counties rank as high-volatile A bituminous. Most of the coals are chemically suitable for metallurgical coals. Coals with accept-able ash and sulfur contents can be used as major constituents in coking blends with higher rank coal to yield coke with satisfactory properties for blast furnace use.

A special short-term research project was initiated to develop plant design parameters for treating mine waters to yield an effluent acceptable for discharge into streams and a sludge amenable to effective and economic disposal. Neutralization was investigated to provide simple and direct treatment of ferruginous acid waters using lime; coarse limestone, and limestone followed by lime. Limestone treatment was accomplished using a small cement mixer as a simple reactor to provide abrasive agitation of limestone and mine water. Results from tests with nine mine waters encompassing a wide range of iron and acid concentrations showed that coarse limestone, one of the cheapest neutralizing agents known, is potentially useful for treating mine water discharges. However, process variables must be defined more completely before the practical applications and limitations of the process can be fully established. In all the tests a pH of >7.2 was obtained ultimately with limestone. Reaction time to reduce the iron content below 7 ppm in the water was dependent on the original ferrous iron concentration. For waters with high ferrous iron content, treatment with limestone followed by lime rapidly produced an acceptable treated water, Sludges with good settling and handling characteristics resulted when limestone was used for neutralization either alone or with subsequent treatment. Reaction rates are expressed graphically as pH change and iron depletion curves; characteristic solids settling curves are shown. The temperature dependency of ferrous iron oxidation was verified.

Fourteen 50-lb laboratory melts were investigated to determine the effect of uranium on the tenpering characteristics of loo-carbon (0.06 to 0.1 pct C) steels. It was found that uranium additions, particularly in the range 0.30 to 0.45 pct, enhanced the hardness and both ultimate and yield strength of the experivzental steels in the quenched and tempered condition. The structural and morphological chazges indicated that uranium retarded tempering of the tnartensite, thereby hindering the normal formation of polygonal ferrite formed in the late stages of tempering. The effect of this was to make possible the re-tension of the acicilar ferritic structure in the uranium-bearing' steels. The iraniuin-bearing steels also showed IVidnzanstatten-type growth of ferrite plates and had large prior austenite grains containing assenzblies of fine ferrite grains, mainly acicular in geometry. The fine-grained ferrite structure and the presence of more numerous and apparently smaller precipitates in the uranium-bearing steels are thought to he principally responsible for the itnproved tensile strength and hardness of the experinzental uranium-bearing steels. At ternperirzg temperatures above 455% (850'F) the ferrite in the higher-uraniun steels nzaintained acicularity and, hence, its strength and resistance to tempering. Uranium did not produce a secondary hardening peak. However, it retarded softening during the third stage of tempering because of its effect of inhibiting the grouth of cementite particles and of retaining the acicularity of ferrite plates. The resistance to coalescence accounted for the slow grocth of the ferrite grains in the uranium-modified steels and, hence, fov the persistence of the acicular ferrite structure. IT had been found previously1 that uranium additions up to about 0.45 pct had no significant effect on the tensile properties of low-carbon steel (0.06 to 0.10 pct C) in the as-rolled and normalized conditions, Fig. 1. On the other hand, it was observed that uranium in excess of about 0.30 pct had an embrittling effect as revealed by Charpy V-notch impact results. It was also noted that, as the uranium content increased, the morphology of pearlite changed from lamellar to feathery and the ferrite grains showed an etching effect resembling striated or dashed markings, suggestive of precipitation. The sharp drop in the impact properties shown in Fig. 2 warranted an assumption that the uranium content of about 0.30 to 0.45 pct may produce some secondary hardening reaction on tempering, analogous to that associated with a Cr-Mo-V steel, which shows very poor CVN toughness at the secondary hardness peak in the tempering curve.1' With this background and the reported findings of Hasegawa and noda that low-carbon uranium-treated steel showed signs of secondary hardening, the present investigation was undertaken to determine the effect of uranium additions on the mechanical properties of 0.10 pct C steels. No attempts were made to investigate in detail the mechanisms of hardening, although some suggestions based on the experiments are made. MATERIALS AND PROCEDURES A series of 50-lb induction-furnace melts was made using AISI 1008 rimming steel billets as the melting stock. The melting, forging, and rolling techniques proven satisfactory in previous projects'-3 were employed as a guide for this investigation. The steel was deoxidized with aluminum (2 lb per ton) prior to the addition of high-purity uranium. The analysis of each melt is given in Table I. Properties were evaluated as a function of heat treatment and are presented in terms of hardness and tensile strength vs tempering temperatures. The variation of hardness with the tempering temperature was studied on the quenched and tempered specimens, some of which measured 0.50 by 0.25 in. diam and the others 0.40-in. cubes. Before quenching, the specimens were vacuum-sealed in glass tubes and normalized at 900°C (1650°F) for 20 min. Following this treatment, the sealed specimens were hardened by austenitizing at 955°C (1750°F) for 20 min and water quenching, and then tempered for 1 hr in the range 150 to 730°C

There are five logical stages in the search for orebodies in virgin territory, namely: (1) reconnaissance inventory of geology, and related investigations; (2) development of broad concepts as a basis for selecting regions of potential mineral deposits; (3) assessment of criteria leading to specific localities within these regions; (4) geo-physical and geochemical studies that will delineate small anomalous areas; and (5) stripping, drilling or other means of locating ore. In addition, the development of new means of extracting mineral resources and the finding of new uses play a vital role in our mineral industry. The continued growth of this industry will be largely governed by our ability to develop or to adapt new concepts and techniques, and to produce a greater number of scientists and engineers. It should always be remembered that more than one-third of Canada's exports are dependent upon our ability to find, develop and economic-ally exploit new orebodies.
