This paper is a study of the application of the science of coal petrology to the use of coal in the iron and steel industry. The petrography of coal is given the most attention, with some mention of coal palynology. The history of the petrographical analysis of coal is first out-lined, with a description of the various coal entities, and then the apparatus and experimental techniques employed for coal evaluation are discussed. The coke stability factor and the relation of coke strength to petrographical data are also covered, and some space is given to the new science of coke microscopy, in particular its use in following the oxidation of coals.

High-quality sheet of electrowon molybdenum was attained by a sequence of procedure on pressed and arc-melted crystalline powders. The procedures included high-temperature, high-vacuum sintering treatments and the use of metal deoxidizers instead of carbon to improve the mechanical properties of the molybdenum sheet. Rolled sheet 60 mils thick was evaluated by tensile and bend tests, hardness measurements, microstructures, and recrystallization treatments. After stress relieving, yield strength ranged from 85,000 to 110,500 psi (0.2- percent offset) and ultimate strength ranged from 87,200 to 117,250 psi with 4.5- to 25-percent elongation observed for arc-melted sheet, and 5.0- to 23- percent elongation observed for powder metallurgy sheet. In room temperature bend tests the sheet yielded plastically, indicating that the ductile-brittle transition point was below room temperature. The diamond pyramid hardness (DPH) of the molybdenum sheet changed from 214 to 293 DPH for the stress-relieved condition to 177 to 185 DPH for the fully recrystallized condition. The brittleness of recrystallized molybdenum, reported by other investigators as characteristic of sheet prepared from commercial-grade hydrogen-reduced powders, was not in evidence. Recrystallized tensile specimens pulled at room temperature had an average elongation of 31 percent.

This paper presents a correlation for predicting the behavior of a water cone as it builds from the static water-oil contact to breakthrough conditions. The correlation is partly empirical and involves dimensionless groups of reservoir and fluid properties and of production and well characteristics. The groups were deduced from the scaling criteria for the immiscible displacement of oil by water. The correlation is based on a limited amount of experimenfal data from a laboratory sand-packed model and on results from a computer program for a two-dimensional, incompressible system. Because the correlating groups are dimensionless, they can be used to estimate the performance of water coning cases not specifically considered in the correlation. However, despite its dimensionless nature, the correlation is not completely general and will not provide meaningful estimates of cone behavior in many situations. INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND The production of water from oil wells is a common occurrence which increases the cost of producing operations and may reduce the efficiency of the depletion mechanism and the recovery of reserves. We will deal with one cause of this water production, namely, coning. The coning of water into a producing well is caused by pressure gradients established around the wellbore by the production of fluids from the well. These pressure gradients can raise the water-oil contact near the well where gradients are most severe. Gravity forces that arise from fluid density differences counterbalance the flowing pressure gradients and tend to keep the water out of the oil zone. Therefore, at any given time, there is a balance between gravitational and viscous forces at points on and away from the completion interval. When the dynamic forces at the wellbore exceed gravitational forces, a cone of water will ultimately break into the well to produce water along with the oil. We can expand on this basic visualization of coning by introducing the concepts of stable cone, unstable cone and critical production rate. For instance, if a well is produced at a constant rate and the pressure gradients in the drainage system have become constant, a steady-state condition is reached. If, at this condition, the dynamic forces at the well are less than the gravity forces, then the water or gas cone that has formed will not extend to the well. Moreover, the cone will neither advance nor recede, thus establishing what is known as a stable cone. Conversely, if the pressure in the system is in an unsteady-state condition, then an unstable cone will continue to advance until steady-state conditions prevail. If the flowing pressure drop at the well is suffcient to overcome the gravity forces, the unstable cone will grow and ultimately break into the well. It is important to note that in a realistic sense, stable cones may only be "pseudostable" because the drainage system and pressure distribution generally change. For example, with reservoir depletion, the water-oil contact may advance toward the completion interval, thereby increasing chances for coning. As another example, reduced productivity due to well damage requires a corresponding increase in the flowing pressure drop LO maintain a given production rate. This increase in pressure drop may force an otherwise stable cone into a well. The critical production rate, well known in the literature, is the rate above which the flowing pressure gradient at the well causes water (or gas) to cone into the well. It is, therefore, the maximum rate of oil production without concurrent production of the displacing phase by coning. At the critical rate, a built-up cone is stable but is at a position of incipient breakthrough. Numerous papers have been published on critical rates. Some of the better known of these include the work of (1) Muskat and Wyckoff,' who first dealt with the coning problem; (2) Chaney, et al,' who developed expressions similar to those of Muskat but who presented results in a conven ient-to-use graphical form (the "Sun" method); and (3) Meyer and Garder,b hose analysis is based on radial-flow formulas. One assumption in critical production rate analyses is that the cone has built-up to just before its breakthrough into the well. But, these analyses reveal nothing directly about the time it takes for the cone to build up to this incipient breakthrough position. Thus, water-free oil can be produced from a well for prolonged periods at rates above the critical rate before the well reaches the condition to which the critical rate applies. The published literature contains little on the rate of growth of a cone. Experimentally, Meyer and Searcy studied the rate of rise of a cone in a Hele-Shaw model.' Additional related work on water breakthrough and produced water-oil ratios in water driven reservoirs was reported by Muskat," Hutchinson and Kemp," Henley, et al,' and Stevens, et a1.B Theoretically, the basic coning equations for a water-oil system can be developed by applying the conservation of mass to each of the phases, relating flow velocities with pressure by Darcy's law, and relating pressures across water-oil interfaces by capillary pressure. With the usual boundaries at the well and reservoir limits, the solution of the resulting equations for the time behavior of a water-oil interface constitutes a free-surface, boundary-value problem. Reducibility tests were run by the Bureau of Mines on an open hearth lump ore and four groups of pellets whose smelting characteristics had been deter-mined previously in the Bureau's experimental blast furnace. When reduction data from various tests were plotted on specially prepared paper l-(l-percent reduction/100)1/3 against time, the plots were linear. The iron-wustite inter-face therefore advances at a constant rate. The rate of the interface advance in mm/min was used as a reducibility index. The reducibility index measured at 900° C, using 0.45 cu ft hydrogen per minute varied inversely with the surface area of the sample. Even with carefully controlled surface areas, how-ever, duplicate reducibility indices varied considerably. When enough tests were run to give a stable mean, the mean reducibility index did correlate with blast furnace production for the four pellet groups. Results indicated that if the interface speed itself were to be used for correlation with blast furnace production, a sample size of about 180 grams of minus 0.742-plus 0.525-inch particles should be used with a test temperature of 900° C and a flow of 0.45 cu ft hydrogen per minute.

The method used by J & L to arrive at an economically sound open-pit boundary its outlined fully. Physical limitations to open-pit boundaries are mentioned briefly. The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory and small--scale continuous tests of weathered mica pegmatite ores from Hart County, Ga., to determine the technical feasibility of recovering commercial-grade mica concentrates by flotation. Two modifications of the Bureau-developed anionic-cationic method were used. In one method, sodium carbonate and calcium lignin sulfonate were used for pH control and quartz depression; this method yielded mica concentrates containing 98.5 percent mica with a recovery of 91.4 percent. In the other modification, lime and sodium silicate were used with the calcium lignin sulfonate; concentrates containing 98.9 percent mica with a recovery of 86 percent were obtained.

The Bureau of Mines evaluated equipment and procedures for drop-weight testing of explosive liquids as prescribed by Test 4) a widely used method. It was demonstrated that partial ignitions, originally designated as negative results, should be designated positives; it was also shown that wear or erosion of the sample cups and the type of mount used for the apparatus had important effects on the results. Relative sensitivity as measured by Test 4 was found to vary slightly with temperature. The Bureau also designed a fixed 2-kg weight and associated electromagnetic release, which subsequently were incorporated as standard in a revision of Test 4. The original concept that the test involves only adiabatic compression was found to be an oversimplification; an alternate mechanism for the initiation process is proposed in which due consideration is given to the effects of cavitation and microjets.

An attempt has been made in this investigation to define the conditions under which ammonium nitrate (AN) might detonate as a result of involvement in fire. The initiation of detonation by shocks derived from explosives or from projectile impact was investigated as a function of temperature and charge diameter. A new technique was devised to investigate the burning of raw and contaminated AN under pressure. No transition, to detonation in AN was obtained in the burning experiments. The critical diameter for detonation of fertilizer-grade AN was found to be quite small when the AN was at temperatures just below melting point; this indicates that initiation of detonation may be less difficult at elevated temperatures but such initiation by gas-phase detonation was shown to be unlikely. Transition from burning to detonation was obtained with AN intimately mixed with fuels that included polyethyl-ene, paper, and fuel oil when these were contained in vessels with restricted vents. However, the experimental results supported by an analytical study indicate that the initiation of detonation in AN from fire exposure in normal storage and from transportation incidents is quite improbable. The detonation of AN in recent incidents more likely may have resulted from the effects of adjacent explosions.

A computer program is presented to calculate the shape factors and volumes of cells from a potentiometric model, using coordinates of the inter-sections of the stream lines and equal potentials and a few additional coordinates. Shape factors are used in flow computations when the geometry is complicated. The program also includes computer instructions to divide the channels into cells of equal volume and to obtain the shape factor for each of these equal volume cells. An illustrated example using the potentiometric model for the waterflood of a seven-spot well-spacing pattern is presented. The information contained in the report is of value not only to those allied to the subject but also to others, because many of the techniques can be conveniently used in formulating other computer programs.

Gas-oil relative permeability ratio is an important relationship in oil reservoir predictive calculations. A correlation has been developed from 107 gas-flood k/k tests on Venezuelan core samples. The correlating parameter is based on restored-state water saturation tests and' is applicable to both consolidated and poorly consolidated sandstone reservoirs. Data of the correlation show that there are no distinguishah1e differences between the mass-data groupings for the two c1assifications A procedure is recommended for running .sufficient relative. permeability analyses to compute a geometric mean of the sample group. The geometric mean is more representative of the total core, and probably the entire reservoir. For example, while only one in four of the k,,/k,., test curves agreed closely with the resultant correlation of this report, the geometric mean curves of the 16 suites (three samples or more). showed good agreetment ill three cases out of four. INTRODUCTION The gas-oil relative permeability ratio is an important, fundamental relationship in most oil reservoir predictive calculations. Predictive calculations are made to estimate future reservoir production characteristics and ultimate oil recovery. The k1,/k2, relationship is specifically needed to relate the surface gas-oil ratio to the reservoir oil and gas saturation, and to calculate the relative movement of these phases within the reservoir whenever some of the more complex driving mechanisms are present. Laboratory k1/k2, tests are not generally run as a routine analysis. Consequently, k1/k2 data often are not available when needed because the cost of laboratory work could not be justified or the need for such data had not been properly anticipated. When laboratory k1/k2, data are available, they are often very difficult to interpret. For example, wide divergence is sometimes shown in a family of k1,/k1, tests representative of the producing horizon in a single well. With these considerations in mind, a study was made to determine if a relationship might exist between the k1,/k2, curve and some other simple laboratory test criteria. The most probable k1/k2, curve correlation for Venezuela described in this paper is the result of the investigation. The presented correlation defines the most probable gas-flood k,,/k,, curve through the medium of air-water capillary displacement and centrifuge water saturation tests. The laboratory procedures of these tests are. relatively simple, and inexpensive; test data should be. widely available- from routine analysis. DATA AVAILABLE, LABORATORY METHODS The report correlation utilized 107 gas-Hood k1/k2, tests run on sandstone cores of Venezuelan reservoirs. Table 1 is a general tabulation of data pertinent to the tests, while Table 2 summarizes the data. Thetests include 96 from Western Venezuela and 11 from Eastern Venezuela. Eighty-two- of the 107 test samples were sandstones that varied from poorly consolidated to-unconsolidated; 25 were consolidated. The average sample porosity was 26.7 per cent and the average permeability was 1,121 md; these values typify the better sandstone reservoirs of' Venezuela. The Welge gas-flood technique,' based on fundamental Buckley-Leverett frontal displacement theory, was introduced in about 1952 and is widely accepted in the industry. The laboratory procedure is relatively simple, rapid, and can be performed on small core samples. While there have been some minor variations in sample preparation and laboratory procedure in the tests used for the correlation, these tests can be generally summarized as follows. The core sample was first sol vent-extracted and dried. Connate-water saturation was restored by the oil-flushing or evaporation-blow down methods. At the beginning of gas flood the hydrocarbon pore volume was completeiy saturated with the test oil phase. Unsteady-state gas-oil displacement then began with the injection of nitrogen or helium. while the displaced oil and gas phases were incrementally metered at the out-flow face. From the test data, the k,,/k,, curve was calculated by the Welge method.' The individual oil and gas relative permeabilities were also calculated." CORRELATING PROCEDURES In attempting to establish a basis of correlation, we found that broad mid-range sections of 105 of the 107 k,,/k,, test curves could be closely duplicated by a straight line. Only two curves did not show a degree of linearity in this region. Correlation-curve definition parameters were subsequently developed from this observation of consistent mid-range linearity. Possible correlating variables were limited to the physical properties measured on core samples that (1) were widely available as common test data and (2) could be easily and cheaply obtained through future laboratory work. The Bureau of Mines developed hypereutectic aluminum-silicon alloys which 11.7.d better mechanical properties than the unmodified hypereutectic alloy. A commercial aluminum-20 weight-percent silicon LIr alloy was selected as a ary base for improvement. The primary silicon. grains were reduced from ASTM 4-5 to ASTM 8.5 by the use of phosphorus and phosphorus compounds. The remaining eutectic matrix was refined by sodium metal additions of 0.2 weight-percent. Solid solution strengthening of the alpha aluminum was obtained by adding 2 percent copper and 0.5 percent magnesium. Also, 1 percent nickel was added to harden the alloy. Optimum thermal treatment consisted of a solution treatment for 10 hour:, at 480° C with hot water quench, followed by aging for 6 hours at 175° C. The final alloy exhibited a Rockwell B hardness of 75 ±2 in the heat-treated condition. The ultimate tensile strength was 39,5O0 psi with no recordable elongation. The coefficient of linear thermal expansion was 20.4 x 10-6 per °C in the temperature range 20° to 300° C. No wear resistance data were collected.

"This paper charts, briefly, the :salient facts of international trade in minerals and their products and Canada's place in it. It also reviews inter-national agreements, economic groupings and national measures to channel and regulate production and trade in minerals. Canada's mineral industry now produces raw materials worth $3.7 billion per year, making this country a giant among mineral producers. Two-thirds of this production is exported, chiefly to the United States, accounting for about 30 per cent of Canada's merchandise exports and topping all other classes.However, several other nations are also pressing the development of their mineral resources and markets. The Soviet Bloc, China and principally Australia and Africa are becoming important suppliers of basic raw materials to some traditional markets of Canada in Europe and Japan.The outlook for Canadian mineral exports to the countries of the Common Market, Great Britain and Japan is good, although some tariff barriers remain troublesome.Concerning the United States, our most important market, Canada is seeking to have that country lift import quotas on lead and zinc, and re-cent statements by U.S. authorities give hope that this may be achieved soon. Moreover, Canada wishes to obtain easier access to the American market for several of its metals and minerals.Canada is now participating in the Kennedy Round of tariff talks under the auspices of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT), and is seeking to open wider doors for its exports of products.In summary, Canada has done reasonably well in some mineral commodities on world markets, but has lost ground in others. Any slackening of Canada's efforts in the development and marketing of mineral resources would soon lead to the decline of its role in the world miueral economy."

Simulation as a mathematical technique is not new. However, recent increases in digital computer speeds and the ease of programming with languages such as Fortran have centered a good deal of attention around simulation in the last few years, Many sophistications of the method have been developed during this time. However, the ability to simulate mathematically still hinges on the ability to ignore unimportant details which would complicate the mathematics and make simulation impractical, Thus, with this attitude in mind, it becomes very easy to design a pseudo- simulator which will predict average conditions very well, but can not truly allow a detailed study of the system being simulated. Most simulations fall into this category, along with the case mentioned here. This paper is not intended to be a critical treatise of the simulator used to study a particular mining system. Instead, it will be used to illustrate the aspects of simulator development. The steps in the development of any simulator are described, along with same detail of the phosphate mine simulator itself.

"THE Canadian Advisory Committee on Coal Research, which is commonly known as CACCR, has been in existence for the past five years and has held annual meetings during that period. This Committee is comprised of representatives from: the Mines Branch, Fuels and Mining Practice Division, Ottawa; the Geological Survey of Canada; the Dominion Coal Board; and the Provincial Research Councils and Foundations. It embraces all coal research in Canada that is sponsored, for the most part, by Government funds.To bring the country's coal research activities to the notice of the Canadian coal industry, the Coal Research Committee of the Coal Division, C.I.M., passed a resolution at the 1964 business meeting in favour of recommending the publication of an annual research report prepared by the CACCR. The first such report was published in the September, 1964, issue of the C.I.M. Bulletin; the second appeared in the November, 1965, issue of the same publication."

Fly ash from four sources and in certain proportions was shown to assist chemical coagulation of turbid water and settling of chemically induced floc. Fly ash reduced the time required to form the first visible floc, promoted more uniform flocs about 2 mm in diameter, and increased the mean settling rate of floc particles. Also, the addition of fly ash produced denser sludges than those obtained with alum alone. Final turbidities were independent of fly ash particle size and carbon content. Optimum proportions of fly ash additive are given.

Part 5, the last of this series, deals with the theoretical confirmation and application of results developed in parts 1 and 2. The bulk-sampling variances of Hassialis and Kassel and Guy are compared with those in part 2, both as to formulation and as applied to ores and coal. The results provide confirmation for much of the development in part 2. Examples are presented for determining the reliability of bulk samples with respect to various measurable characteristics. These characteristics include, for example, assays for elements or compounds and particle surface area. The bulk samples considered consist either of a given weight, a given volume, or a given number of particles. In addition to problems of sample reliability, some of these examples may also be applicable to quality control. Several possible applications of results developed in parts 1 and 2 are outlined. These include tests for random data, degree-of-mixing indices, and particle-fineness indices.

The Bureau of Mines explored the use of air or natural gas for recovering additional oil from natural water-drive reservoirs with little or no original gas saturation. Engineering and production data for a field in the Mid-Continent area, results of limited laboratory experiments, and data shown in the literature were considered. Injecting air into a water-coned well could seriously damage the well. Injecting natural gas into the watered-out zone could improve the producing water-oil ratio. In the reservoir studied, oil recovery can be increased by injecting natural gas to decrease water-oil ratios. Laboratory tests on a core from the field show an increase in oil recovery of 7.6 percent of the original oil in place as a result of increasing the free gas saturation. This recovery could amount to as much as an additional 6 million barrels of oil from this field.

The 1965 Lignite Symposium, the Louth in a series and the third sponsored by the University of North Dakota and the Bureau of Mines, was held at Bismarck, N. Dak., on April 29-30, 1963. These symposia provide a forum for those interested in the technology and utilization of solid fuels, especially lignitic coals. As part of the meeting, a 200-mile field trip was taken including; inspection of (1) the 200-megawatt, pulverized lignit-fired Leland Olds plant of Basin Electric Power Cooperative, under construction near Stanton, N. Dak.; (2) the site of the Glunharold mine of the Truax-Traer Coal Co., Division of Consolidation Coal Co., where a wheel excavator was being assembled; (3) the operating Beulah mine of Knife River Coal Mining Co., subsidiary of Montana-Dakota Utilities Co., near Beulah, N. Dak.; and (4) the 400-megawatt, hydroelectric Garrison Dam powerplant, near Garrison, N. Dak.
