This paper supplements and brings up to date a report prepared earlier this year and presented at the Eleventh Pan American Railway Congress in Mexico City. Most of the original report is contained in this paper in order to acquaint the reader with the project background. On December 1, 1961, construction of this locomotive was completed. Stationary testing started immediately, and a host of problems in various areas were uncovered. Many of these had no relation to the use of coal in a direct fired gas turbine. All of them emphasized the problems which plagued previous projects of this kind. In 1944 the Locomotive Development Committee of Bituminous Coal Research, Inc., was formed to study the problems of combustion, coal handling, and fly ash removal which would have to be solved before coal could be used to fire a gas turbine. By 1947 this committee was composed of the chief executive officers of nine eastern railroads and five eastern coal companies. All of the members of this committee were vitally concerned in a coal fired gas turbine because coal cost only one-fourth as much per heat unit as fuel oil. A number of research projects were started to develop and test components on a small scale. This included work at John Hopkins University, Battelle Memorial Institute, Institute of Gas Technology at Chicago, Purdue University, and Southern Research Institute. By 1946 a pilot plant had been installed at the Dunkirk, New York plant of Alco Products Div. of American Locomotive Co. The U. S. Bureau of Mines made available to the Locomotive Development Committee (hereafter called LDC) a Houdry process gas turbine plant, originally destined for a Russian oil refinery. The full scale pilot plant was used to evaluate the results obtained from the small scale studies under actual gas turbine conditions. Operation of this plant disclosed a number of problems which had not been discovered in the small scale tests. By 1951 four 250 hr tests had been conducted with the Houdry gas turbine to test out a variety of equipment. The major problem concerned the removal of abrasive fly ash from the products of combustion so that wear on turbine blades would not be excessive. The first 250 hr test showed that the original fly ash separating equipment was inadequate. Large ash particles passing through the turbine blading were nicking the leading edges of the first row blades. At the conclusion of the second 250 hr test, erosion was so severe that the first row of stator and the first row of rotor blades were replaced. At the end of the third 250 hr test, it was necessary to replace the first three rows of stator blading. The fourth test was used to test out a new design fly ash separator developed by LDC and named the Dunlab tube. This device gave more encouraging results than any of the others tested. Early enthusiasm for overcoming major difficulties had resulted in placing an order in 1946 with Allis-Chalmers Mfg. Co. for a 3750 hp regenerative gas turbine. The gas turbine, together with associated combustion and ash removal equipment, coal handling equipment, generators and gear reduction unit was installed at Dunkirk by 1951. A 750 hr test was made in 1952 with the LDC-Allis Chalmers gas turbine power plant. At the end of this test it was necessary to replace the first four rows of both rotor and stator blading. Rows 5 and 6 did not require replacement. In 1953 the American Locomotive Co. joined with LDC and assumed an active role in equipment development and manufacture. During 1954 LDC-Alco operated the rebladed gas turbine 300 hr to determine if a new fly ash separator was adequate. Performance of the improved separator was considerably better, but trouble was experienced with clogged blowdown lines from the Dunlab tubes. When these lines clogged it permitted the passage of abrasive particles. In 1955 a total of 1421 hr was run. This included 243 hr of cycle operation on Union Pacific coal from the D. O. Clark mine at Superior, Wyoming. During the 243 hr a total of 370 tons of coal was consumed. The purpose of this test was to determine if U.P. coal was suitable for use in a coal fired turbine. It was the unofficial opinion that it was as good or better than the eastern coals that had been tested.

The shear continuity conditions under which one mechanical twin may cross another are considered. Twin intersections usually involve various types of slip deformation in addition to twinning. Because the shear of the crossing twin may be partly transmitted through the crossed twin by slip mechanisms, continuity of the twinning shear vectors is not required at a twin intersection. It is concluded that analyses based on twin intersections should not he used as an independent method for deducing twinning elements in newly observed twinning modes. WHEN one mechanical twin passes through another, a twin intersection is said to occur. In the simplest form of intersection, Fig. 1, the crossing of one twin by another is accomplished with the aid of a second-order twin induced, in the twin that is crossed, by the crossing twin. The subject of twin intersections is significant to the field of deformation studies because it has been postulated by cahn1 that twin intersections should occur only under the following continuity conditions: 1) the traces of the primary and second-order twin must be parallel to each other in the plane of the crossed twin; 2) the direction 771 and magnitude, S, of the twinning shear must be identical in the crossing and second-order twins; also, the sense of shear must be the same. If these postulates are valid they constitute a valuable tool for determining twinning elements of newly observed twinning modes in metals. In his classic paper in 1953 on the plastic deformation of a uranium, Cahn1 used these continuity conditions to deduce twinning elements for several uranium modes. However, in the same year, pratt2 showed that both of Cahn's continuity equations were violated for (1012) twin intersections in zinc. Later, Kiho and Maruyama3, 4 showed that Cahn's second postulate was violated in {301) and (101) twinning in tin and (101) twinning in bismuth. In spite of this documentation that Cahn's second postulate is often violated, several recent papers5'6 have been published which have attempted to use the condition of continuity of twinning shear vectors for the evaluation of twinning elements. The primary purpose of this paper is to call attention to the possible ambiguity inherent in applications of Cahn's postulate, and to present additional information concerning the nature of twin intersections.

A process was developed on a laboratory scale in which iron contained in galvanizers ' zinc dross and aluminum contained in scrap zinc die - cast alloy were removed simultaneously . Melting both types of scrap together in the proper proportions resulted in formation of solid intermetallic Fe₂ Alg , which was readily removed from the melt by filtration and centrifugation . Recovery was 87 to 92 percent of the available zinc . Refined filtrate contained 0.02 percent iron and 0.20 percent aluminum. Aluminum content was further reduced to less than 0.01 percent by fluxing with zinc chloride . Low temperatures employed and inexpensive equipment requirements make the process commercially attractive .

The conduct of work at elevated air pressures , such as in caissons and in tunnel - driving in subaqueous strata , poses safety problems not encountered in mining and tunneling operations at ordinary atmospheric pressure . This publication discusses some of the problems involved and presents information on the following subjects : ( 1 ) Physiological effects of gases at elevated pressure . ( 2 ) Use of respiratory protective equipment in rescue or recovery operations in event of fire or other emergency in pressurized tunnels . ( 3 ) Effect of elevated pressure on performance of some gasdetecting instruments ; interpretation of the results . Various types of respiratory protective devices are discussed in relation to their possible use at elevated pressures , especially the 2 - hour , selfcontained , recirculating - oxygen - breathing apparatus , which has had wide use in the United States during rescue and recovery work in the mining industry . A modified procedure that eliminates the hazard of oxygen poisoning enabling the safe use of this apparatus at elevated pressures , up to 45 pounds per square inch , gage , and tests to verify its practicability are described . procedure involves control of the partial pressure of oxygen in the breathing

The results of a preliminary investigation of compressive strength versus length-diameter (L/D) ratios of potash specimens and the statistical treatment of the data are summarized in this report. The purpose of the study was to evaluate a laboratory method for obtaining estimates of the strength of potash pillars during robbing operations. The specific objectives of this preliminary investigation were to test the method and the reliability (confidence limits) of the data, and to determine the number of additional specimens necessary for given confidence limits. The specimens were taken from three sites at two mines in New Mexico. The statistical analyses included the determination of the confidence limits for the data and the number of additional specimens necessary to obtain confidence limits of ±500 and 100 psi. The testing method was found acceptable, and estimates of the comprehensive strength, within 1500 psi, could be obtained by testing about 110 additional specimens from the three sites. This report presents a detailed lithologic description of the Big Lime, Keener, Big Injun, Weir, and Berea horizons from a well cored in the Spruce Creek oilfield, Ritchie County, W. Va. Well logs and results of core analysis are also included. The information was obtained during the Bureau of Mines continuing technical evaluation of selected Appalachian area oil reservoirs for increased ultimate recovery. The lithologic study of these important West Virginia oil and gas producing horizons was made on a 4-inch-diameter core. Commercial oil production was obtained by the well owner after the Big Injun horizon was successfully hydraulically fractured.

Operating properties of Bancroft Mines Ltd. are in the Western Province of Northern Rhodesia, just south of the Katanga border and at the north- western end of the Rhodesian Copperbelt. The concentrator, above, was commissioned in January 1957 to treat 150,000 tons per month of ore derived from the nearby Kirila Bomwe South orebody, and the Konkola orebody eight miles away. The Konkola orebody is comparatively low grade and mining was discontinued there in early 1958. Development work on the new mine at the Kirila Bomwe North orebody commenced in 1959. Today, the plant treats approximately 150,000 tons of ore per month from the Kirila Bomwe South orebody and development ore from the north orebody. Ultimately, 100,000 tons of ore per month will be produced from the north orebody.

Forecasters, in estimating long-term energy requirements and supplies, have predicted a bright outlook for coal. Some predictions have annual coal output reaching 800 million tons by 1980, almost twice the average of the last five years. These projections assume that ultimate consumer energy products will be supplied adequately not only in volume but also by kind and type. The consumer energy schedule shifts continually as it reflects the changing demands for numerous uses. Its appearance, expressed generally in proportions of solids, liquids, gases and electricity, is quite different today from what it was in 1940. It may change even more by 1980. Thus, the shares that coal and the other energy sources will have In total supply will depend upon how well each source can be processed into products that will be accepted by consumers.

With over one year experience, Western Deep Levels Ltd., reports satisfactory operation with new features of its 200,000 ton per month gold reduction plant. Western Deep is Anglo American group's newest gold mine. It is situated 43 miles west of Johannesburg on the West Wits Line and will ultimately be extracting ore from a depth of 13,000 ft. Although the plant was put in production in March 1962, after a three month break-in period, construction of the fifth milling section was not completed until last month.

In Tasmania a tailrace tunnel to handle water discharged from a turbine generator has been successfully driven by a machine tunneling method similar to that described in the July 1962 issue of Civil Engineering. The Hydro-Electric Commission, Tasmania, is constructing a high- head (2750 ft) power project that will utilize the storage in the Great Lake (1,150,000 acre-ft) at an elevation of 3380 ft. The underground power station will house six vertical shaft turbo-generators, each rated at 50,000 kw. The tailrace tunnel, 16 ft diam and 14,600 ft long, was driven through a reasonably homogeneous hard mudstone. It was decided to excavate this mechanically in the hope of saving some money on excavation and a considerable sum on the ultimate lining of the tunnel. Mechanical engineers from Tasmania worked with the firm of James S. Robbins and Associates of Seattle, Wash., which designed and supplied the "mole."

This article is a progress report of a program designed to quantitatively evaluate geological parameters to predict stable slope angles. The author feels that, although there does not appear to be any one technique or characteristics that will suffice as an index to the determination of stable slope angles, a combination of seismic methods as outlined here, detailed geological mapping and logging of core, and a better understanding of the angle of internal friction in rock types will permit accurate estimation. A mining engineer friend once remarked, "If we don't have pit slope failures, the slopes are too flat." Since economic justification of an open pit project is based upon ultimate pit slopes, we cannot wait until the pit is developed and slopes established by trial and error. Some combination of geological and/or geophysical techniques must be developed to permit accurate prediction of stable slope angles and to suggest modification of pit outlines to result in slopes enabling maximum economic yield. This presentation is a progress report of a program designed to quantitatively evaluate geological parameters to predict stable slope angles. The principle of the weakest link applies to any slope stability evaluation and necessitates detailed geological examination and recording of observations. Physical failure will occur along any surface where shearing stress exceeds shearing resistance. Rock conditions are seldom uniform even within a single cut or pit face, so stability conditions will vary. Consequently, both plan outline and ultimate slope limits must be tailored to the specific situation. Economic advantages to be gained by slight increases in slope angles in deep pits are well recognized and stimulate efforts to obtain maximum permissible slope angles. MECHANICS OF SLOPE FAILURE Excellent reviews on the nature of slope failure have been presented+2,6,8,11 For the purpose of this study, the writer considers failure to take place by one or more of three processes: 1) ravelling, 2) translation or slope failure, and 3) rotation or base failure (Fig. 1). The effects of increased pore water pressure in soils were recognized in 1923 by Terzaghi in his development of the concept of effective stress, and he has applied the same principle to jointed rocks designating water pressure as cleft-water pressure.8 Cleft-water pressure in a rock slope reduces normal pressure on the plane of failure, thus reducing shearing resistance and resulting in slope failure. In the following discussion it is assumed that adequate drainage is supplied to prevent any build-up of water pressure. This is the first step in any program to establish maximum slopes. Ravelling: Ravelling occurs in rocks with low cohesion and entails the free movement of individual fragments ranging from single rock falls to running ground. Together with an earlier publication of the Bureau2 it provides information on all the known major coal-he disasters (disasters causing five or more deaths) in this Nation's history. Sources of each account are given individually. In each account the actual words of the original publication are used unchanged, but sentences or paragraphs referring to details that are not significant have been omitted. In those few cases where conflicting data were reported in different publications the selected version is the one that appears most logical and which in general is in agreement with most of the other accounts.

This report, based on information made available by four uranium-producing companies, describes the geology, exploration, open-pit development and mining, and shaft sinking in the Gas Hills uranium district of Wyoming. Open-pit stripping features motor-scrapers push-loaded by crawler or rubber-tired tractors. The ground generally can be ripped, and little blasting is necessary. Detailed data are given on grouting for ground stabilization in sinking a small-diameter shaft in the relatively unconsolidated sandstone and siltstone, Cost and performance data are presented as made available by the companies.

ASARC09s continuous tapper for lead blast furnace is described. Its use throughout the company's plants has resulted in higher production rates, lower labor costs, and better working conditions. It has also permitted wide latitude in blast pressures, as well as in charge and slag compositions. The practice of tapping a lead blast furnace has remained essentially unchanged for many years. In principle, it is a batch operation discharging the products from the continuous smelting of lead-bearing materials. As such, it imposes certain restrictions on the proper functioning of the smelting operation. First, it calls for a highly developed sense of timing, and a considerable amount of physical effort on the part of the operator. Dirty and hot working conditions, as well as the hazards of flying metal and slag, usually prevail. These conditions have resulted in higher labor costs, both in rate and in amount. Labor turnover has also been high. Secondly, rigid control of mechanical and metallurgical factors must be maintained. Frequent oxygen lancing of the tap hole is needed to permit tapping, thereby increasing operating costs. Rapid increases in smelting rate, plugged tap holes, or forgetfulness on the part of the operator may permit the molten material to rise above the tuyeies and freeze the furnace. Also, the operator will often blow out the tap hole after draining, filling the area with fume. Composition of charge also vitally affects the tapping. The type of lead-bearing material being smelted will naturally affect the smelting rate, and thus the frequency of tapping. The amounts and types of fluxing materials, which determine the ultimate fluidity of the slag, must be regidly controlled. Finally, the batch tapping of a continuous smelting operation of this type appears to be wrong in principle. The molten material drains into the crucible at the bottom of the furnace where it starts cooling immediately and continues to cool until tapped out. While keeping the lead molten is no particular problem, maintaining a fluid slag at all times is often difficult, and sometimes impossible. These factors all point to the desirability of a method for the continuous tapping of a lead blast furnace. The expected advantages would be more desirable working conditions, lower labor costs, increased production, and a much wider latitude in both blast pressure and charge composition. CONTINUOUS TAPPING Historical. A number of devices, e.g., mechanical tappers, siphons, and lead wells, have been tried in the past in attempting to effect continuous tapping. None proved to be entirely satisfactory for tapping lead and slag simultaneously. It was not until 1955, however, that ASARCO designed and put into operation a successful tapping unit at its East Helena, Mont. lead smelter. This unit is described in detail in U.S. Patent NO. 2,890,951. Continuous Tapping Unit—See Figs. 1 and 2. Fig. 1 is a schematic drawing of the unit in place, showing front and side views. The component parts are identified in the caption. Fig. 2 is an actual photograph, front view, of the tapping unit attached to the base of the blast furnace. Operation. The operation of the tapping unit is quite simple. Essentially it consists of a narrow tapping bay surrounding the furnace tap hole, with a deep notch in the front wall. When the blast furnace is started this notch is open down to the level of the tap hole. Starting the furnace may be accomplished in several ways but the most satisfactory method is to plug the tap hole with clay, permitting metal and slag to build up inside the furnace. Before the liquid reaches the tuyeres, the plug is removed and the furnace is drained to the settler. The blast is then stopped momentarily while the notch in the front wall of the tapping bay is dammed with chrome brick and plastic chrome ore. The blast is again started, and the height of the dam is adjusted so that the liquid in the bay will counterbalance the internal pressure of the furnace. When the desired level is reached the slag and metal will overflow to the settler. It should be noted that the molten material ,is not siphoned from the furnace and that the metal 'acts as a liquid valve controlling the flow of slag through the tap hole. During normal operations the tapping bay is filled primarily with lead, covered with a thin layer of slag. Thus, the heavier lead plays the major role in compensating for variations in furnace pressures. Due to the high specific gravity of lead, changes in the liquid level in the tapping bay will never exceed a few inches. For this reason it is seldom necessary to change the height of the dam due to minor variations in operating conditions. Some turbulence of the liquid in the bay is essential at all times. The Bureau of Nines at Morgantown, W. Va., has been investigating, on a pilot plant scale, various methods of gasifying bituminous coal with oxygen and superheated steam to produce synthesis gas, as part of the broader program of finding new uses for coal. Differences in the pressure gasification methods used have depended on differences in the manner in which the pulverized coal is fed to the gasifier. One of the methods of feeding the coal that was investigated was the continuous, integrated coal-water slurry system. Goal and water were first mixed to produce a slurry; then the slurry was pumped through a heated coil. to evaporate the water fraction; the resulting steam was superheated, and some of it was separated so as to adjust the ratio of the residual steam to the coal fraction and make the resulting mixture suitable for partial combustion with oxygen in a pressure gasifier. Both before and during this reported3 developmental work it was necessary to make an extensive literature search into the technology of aqueous slurries in order to establish design criteria for the pilot plant and to correlate results of various phases of the work with that of other investigators, The pilot work coincided with the commercial development of a long-distance pipe- line for the transportation of coal as a coal-water slurry, and this fact tended to broaden the scope of the pilot plant work and the extent of the literature search. This bibliography is the compilation of the material that was collected.

With modern exploration techniques, it seems likely that an increasing number of the orebodies to be found in the future will be under alluvial fans or valley fill. As a result, a larger proportion of open pit mines will be confronted with the necessity for removal of substantial quantities of alluvial overburden; whereas in the past, for the most part, the open pit mine operator has dealt mainly with hard rock. If this proves to be the case, methods, equipment, and costs for alluvium stripping will become an increasingly important factor in open pit mine planning. Several operations are now faced with this situation, and various methods and equipment are used. At Pima Mining Company's operation the stripping ratio is in the range of 6/1 Well over half of the stripping volume is alluvium. The alluvium is removed almost entirely by carryalls hauling direct to a waste dump. Some removal has been accomplished by shovel and truck operation; more will be done by this means in the future. At American Smelting and Refining Company's neighboring .Mission Mine, nearly all alluvium removal is by large shovels and, trucks. U. S. Borax's Boron operation is accomplishing alluvium removal with carryalls but has been investigating other methods and equipment. The various operations in the Gas Hills Uranium District in Wyoming are stripping mainly with carryalls, although some small draglines are employed. The M. A. Hanna Company in the Mesabi Range employs large draglines and conveyor systems for removal of glacial fill. Nchanga Consolidated Copper Mines in Northern Rhodesia strips overburden with a large excavating wheel and conveyor system. There are no doubt other open pit operations with which the writer is not familiar, that are handling large quantities of alluvial overburden.

During the past year personnel of the Roof Control Research Group of the Bureau of Mines designed and developed encapsulated hydraulic cells for measuring pressure changes in coal in situ. Preliminary results from feasibility tests in progress in the laboratory and field indicate that the cells respond favorably to changes in pressures associated with a coal-mining environment. The ultimate objective is to use these cells to obtain engineering information relating to coal bump or coal outburst phenomena. Mining research has experienced a remarkable growth during the past decade and from all indications should surge forward at even a greater pace in the future. This increased interest in mining research has been brought about by the ever-multiplying number of technical problems being encountered by the mining industry in its effort to produce pay-dirt tonnages safely and economically from greater underground and surface pit depths. Among the various divisions in the field of mining research, the study of ground stress has received a large part of the overall attention. Numerous technical papers have been written with regard to ground stress conditions around mine openings and yet the total usable knowledge concerning this subject is extremely limited. Research teams around the world are endeavoring to bridge the gap between theoretical and laboratory approaches and the solution to design problems in the field. The problem of ground stress is not a new one for the coal mining industry. Operators in both eastern and western coal fields of the United States as well as in many foreign countries have long been plagued with a number of ground stress problems, one of which is commonly referred to as the coal-mine bump. This term or phenomenon has been aptly defined by earlier investigators as the violent and sudden failure of coal and adjacent rock. Direct results of such failures have been the loss of human lives and thou- sands upon thousands of dollars of sustained mine damages. In an effort to alleviate the magnitude and frequency of these failures, mine operators have employed and are presently employing various corrective techniques. These include: Inducing failure in heavily stressed areas by augering large-diameter holes into stressed pillars, using extensively yield-able steel arches in both long-term haulage and short-term face entries, backfilling unused or abandoned entries with mine waste to gain additional support, and using systematic pillar coal panel extraction techniques including mechanized longwall mining. The Health and Safety Activity of the Bureau of Mines has for a number of years contributed considerable time, funds, and talent in an effort to define better the ground stress problems associated with coal-mine bumps. As a part of this investigative program, in situ ground pressures are presently being studied in coal mines located in West Virginia and Utah. The description and development of the device being used to measure these pressures is the specific topic of this paper. CHOICE OF INSTRUMENTATION After consideration and evaluation of the various instruments and techniques that are being used by researchers in the field of rock mechanics to detetmine in situ stresses, a simple hydraulic system was selected for detailed investigation. Aside from simplicity, a hydraulic system is relatively inexpensive and also eliminates the need for electricity in its installation and operation. The hydraulic device referred to is, in essence, a simple unidirectional pressure-measuring cell. Hydraulic cells, which had been used for measurement of pressures in hard rock, were investigated but found not entirely suitable for use in coal, particularly since they involved (1) preparation and emplacement of cement grout at the test site, and (2) a waiting period before the cells became operational. At the outset, it was decided that certain design parameters be established. The cell should be simple and inexpensive, constructed of materials readily obtainable and easily built in the laboratory or field by unskilled labor. This report summarizes the results and conclusions reached by various investigators who have attempted to determine the extent to which hydraulic fracturing will affect the secondary recovery of crude oil by waterflooding. It also discusses the most advantageous use of this well-stimulation method in waterflood projects. A thorough search of the literature was made, and pertinent information was abstracted from appropriate reports. A carefully designed and controlled program of formation fracturing is an effective aid in waterflooding because it increases water-injection and oil-production rates. Generally, fracturing has resulted in little or no reduction in ultimate oil recovery, but under certain circumstances recovery has been substantially increased.

Lignite tar made by low-temperature Lurgi-Spülgas carbonization of North Dakota lignite was hydrocracked in single-pass, fixed-bed operation at 3,000 pounds per square inch over cobalt molybdate catalyst to produce gasoline, and at the same pressure, over zinc chromite catalyst to crack the high-boiling phenolic compounds to low-boiling phenolics. Hydrocracking the raw tar or the creosote-oil fraction from the tar over cobalt molybdate removed most of the oxygen, sulfur, and nitrogen in the forms of water, hydrogen sulfide, and ammonia, and produced gasoline yields from 31 to 59 volume-percent. The gasoline fractions contained from 0.1 to 7.7 volume-percent tar acids, but tar-base percentages were too low for reliable measurement; removal of these materials with dilute caustic and acid solutions also reduced the sulfur and nitrogen to 0.01 weight-percent or less.

Values for interaction parameters in nonferrous systems, as calculated from published data, are tabulated and discussed. The influence of temperature on the parameter is derived and compared with the results of the literature study. Wagner's relationship between the interaction parameter and the self interaction coefficients is compared with the tabulated data. A problem which has been of considerable interest in the field of metallurgy is the prediction of the effect of one alloying element present in dilute concentration on the thermodynamic properties of another dilute alloying element. Ultimately, the prediction may be accomplished entirely from statistical mechanical considerations. At the present, however, the problem remains unsolved since liquid solution models which are simple enough for analytical treatment are inadequate for such purposes. Thus, we desire some means of organizing the information on dilute systems which will serve as a guide for further study on interactions in dilute alloys, and also provide a basis for the utilization of thermodynamic data in the engineering design of alloys.
