Samples of raw oil shale and kerogen concentrates were oxidized by alkaline potassium permanganate, air, nitric acid, oxygen, and ozone to obtain information about the chemical structure of organic kerogen in oil shale. In one test, oil shale and oil-shale products were oxidized exhaustively with alkaline potassium permanganate, and the distribution of the organic carbon in the final oxidation products was determined. Comparing results of this oxidation with those obtained from other carbonaceous materials and known compounds gave information about the structure of kerogen. Alkaline potassium permanganate oxidation also was used partly to degrade kerogen into soluble products for characterization purposes. Structures present in these degradation products were indicative of type structures originally present in the kerogen. Nitric acid, oxygen, and ozone were used also for partly degrading kerogen to soluble oxidation products. Carbon-balance oxidation tests using alkaline potassium permanganate showed that Colorado oil-shale kerogen differs from many other carbonaceous materials such as coal and kerogens from other areas. Composition of the degradation products indicated that Colorado oil-shale kerogen is predominantly cycloparaffinic and saturated heterocyclic structures with some long-chain paraffinic and aromatic structures present. The ring systems may be connected through short carbon chains or bridges containing oxygen, nitrogen, and sulfur.

Specifications for coal at the Grand Lake thermal electric station read in part: "Coal will be Rom Minto Bituminous (strip operation). Maximum lump 3x3x4 ft. Very corrosive, abrasive and when damp, sticky. Coal may consist of frozen lumps of coal, snow and ice." To maintain quality control it was necessary to develop an automatic sampling system capable of: 1) sampling from one 10-ton truckload every 1½ min; 2) permitting an operator to automatically take a sample from each truckload; 3) depositing the sample in a pre-selected container, one of a possible 10; and 4) performing the sampling operations in accordance with latest ASTM specifications for sampling coal with an ash content of 35%. This paper tells how these and other problems were resolved and describes the equipment used. The New Brunswick Electric Power Commission issued detailed specification No. 5351-5009 outlining the scope of work and general requirements for a mechanical coal handling system to be installed at the Commissions Grand Lake Generating Station. The thermal station is located at Newcastle Creek, some 40 miles east of Fredericton, N.B. Canada, on the shore of Grand Lake. This particular location is immediately adjacent to the Minto strip mining coal area of New Brunswick. Contained in the specifications, but not detailed specifically was an automatic coal sampling system. The system outlined, was to be designed and specified by the individual equipment tenderers. In conjunction with the Hardinge Co., the Barber-Greene Co. designed a sampling system which was contained in the general contract proposal. The system as designed originally, however, presented certain limitations to a continuous coal handling system and was ultimately changed. However, it was only through preliminary study and design that problems created by the specifications were determined, and these problems discussed and finally negotiated with the NBEPC engineering staff created the subsequent sampling system now being installed by Barber-Greene. It must be considered that where the original specifications did not detail the mechanical equipment, it was necessary to present a system which would correspond to the intent of specification and for which Barber-Greene would be responsible as to function, but remain in a competitive position with regard to the tender considered primarily on a price basis. The system now being installed, contains basically all the components which were detailed originally, with the exception of the holding bin arrangement, which was changed to allow a continuous operation of the entire coal handling system. SPECIFICATIONS The specifications covering the sampling system follow. 4.5 Sampler: An automatic sampling system shall be installed capable of sampling one-truck load of coal every 1½ min. When the coal is dumped into the receiving hopper, the operator shall push a button and the sampler shall automatically take a sample of that particular coal when it reaches the sampler. Then the sample taken shall be crushed and reduced in quantity to a workable sample and deposited in a pre-selected container, one of a possible ten. All samples and sampling operations shall be in accordance with the latest edition of ASTM designation 492 for sampling coal with an ash content of 35%. The coal for the initial sample shall have maximum sized lumps of about 3/4 in. and the final sample shall be adjustable from 2 to 5 lb per sample and capable of passing through a sieve with 1/8-in. diam openings. It should be noted that, because of the time delay between the time the sample is requested and when it is actually taken, the operator may call for one or two additional samples from different coal before the first sample is completely refined and in the final sample can. Coal is received from a number of different suppliers on the same day, therefore, the system shall be designed so that there is no possibility of mixing or contaminating the coal from the different suppliers. Medium and low carbon steels, modified with uranium, were studied in order to evaluate the influence of uranium on forge ability, mechanical 11roperties, response to heat treatment and microstructure. Uranium contents ranged up to 0.70 per cent. The medium carbon steels are hot short if the uranium content exceeds about 0.35 per cent. More uranium can be tolerated in low carbon steels. The hot shortness is caused by the formation of intergranular phase UFe2. Critical transformation temperatures, Jominy hardenability, and resistance to tempering are not significantly affected by the 11resence of uranium. Similarly, uranium has little or no effect on the tensile properties of carbon steels. The addition of uranium has a favourable effect 11n the stress-rupture characteristics and some beneficial effect on fatigue properties. However, more results are required for verification. In the steels investigated, it seems that most of the uranium carbide combines to form complex inclusions of U (0, C, N) or (C, N), rich in oxygen or nitrogen or both.

This Bureau of Mines report presents a discussion of the statistical approach to the design of experiments and indicates, by concrete examples, how and when statistical design is essential for obtaining meaningful data with a minimum number of experiments. Every research worker plans his work and designs his experiments in a manner which, based on his experience, seems most rational to him and which he believes will produce the information essential for resolving the problems. If the results obtained are open to multiple interpretations and are not of definitive reliability, the failure of the experiment design to produce the desired information may be due to several causes, These include faulty judgment in selecting the factors to be tested, ignoring the importance of interaction between factors, failure to adequately control test variables, and assuming that meaningful trends in the results can be identified without comparison to a predetermined experimental error. An experienced researcher probably will deduce from the nature of the data obtained that the design is faulty and may by trial and error ultimately arrive at the correct solution to the problem. Statistical methods of planning research minimize the chance of faulty experiment design, embody concrete procedures for testing the validity and reliability of the test data and for indicating mandatory changes in the design, and enable the researcher to obtain meaningful information with the least number of tests.

Some countries are infinitely poorer than others in mineral resources-despite the perfect equality of their political leaders ambitions. Compare the mineral poverty of Kenya and Tanganyika with the riches of Katanga Province and Northern Rhodesia. Compare Paraguay with Chile, There never has been any equality in the distribution of nature's wealth. Minerals cannot play any role at all in economic development where they don't exist, and there are bound to be differential rates of economic development where there are basic differences in the wealth of mineral resources available. Africa is my principal area of interest and I know that there is an unfortunate but widespread misconception about Africa's "vast mineral resources, "its "untapped mineral wealth." Why is it untapped? Why is it undeveloped?

The responsibility and scope of the Industrial Engineering Department, as organized at the Jeffrey mine, has been broadened to include any study, project or report that could result in more effective use of men, materials and equipment. Although still emphasizing wage incentives and co t reduction, much more varied work is now done, consistent with the in-.creased complexity of industry. Additional activities now include production, maintenance and inventory control improved job evaluation, packaging, labour utilization studies, technical sales liaison, mining, milling and service department n1ethods, plant layout, and specialized project analysis. Additional techniques include the extensive use of work .sampling and standard data. A recent trend has been toward increased emphasis on industrial relations, both in introducing change to the men and in providing requested explanations to Union stewards and officers. These new responsibilities have resulted in the development of specialists in some rather narrow industrial engineering fields, as well as the necessity for industrial engineering assistance in supervisory and job training.

RECENTLY, a new type of superalloy material called TD Nickel* has been marketed.' It is a sim- ple, two-phased alloy, consisting of thoria particles dispersed in nickel of rather high purity (Ni-2 pct Thoz). Its mechanical properties appear relatively superior to previous experimental material attempting to use the oxide nonmetallic dispersion concept (except SAP), and superior to conventional nickel-base alloys at high homologous temperatures. This is derived from an interesting method of creating the dispersion, arising during chemical processing of the nickel and thorium salts in solution while reducing the nickel to metal. An evaluation of the thoria phase was conducted at this laboratory. Material and Procedure. TD Nickel was made available, consisting of several inches of 0.470-in. rod, extruded at a ratio of 64: 1, straightened, and centerless ground. Property determinations on this rod by the supplier at 1800°F showed an ultimate tensile strength of 11,400 psi, yield strength of 9600 psi, and 6 pct elongation. Specimens were removed from the rod for as-extruded metallography, and two 1/2-in. lengths supported on high-purity Al2O9 bricks were placed in a laboratory muffle furnace for exposure at 2000° F. The furnace door was left cracked to allow a slight amount of circulation. One specimen was removed at 200 hr for examination; the other was left for 2000 hr. Metallography. The micro structures obtained for the three conditions of exposure are shown in Fig. 1. Elongation of the grain structure in the extrusion direction is readily evident. The grains appear to be up to 0.001 in. (0.003 cm) long, with a length/width ratio of about 10: 1. Allowing for modest local in-homogeneities in structure, no significant change in thoria particle size or nickel alloy grain size occurred during the 2000°F exposure. However, etching depth varies slightly from one specimen to another, changing the number of particles visible. The thoria dispersion appears to be in the order of 0.01 (min) to 0.5 (max) p diam. The minimum diameter is difficult to estimate at X10,000, and may be less. Interparticle spacing appears to be about 0.1 p. Etching effects can be seen, depending upon grain orientation. A cubic etch-pit pattern appears in certain grains, apparently when etching is started by an anodic particle of thoria, Fig. l(c). The cubic pattern appears related to crystallographic orientation, and is prominent when the [ l00 ] direction is perpendicular to the plane of polish. The grains which present a ridged appearance in the photograph appear to be oriented with the [110} direction perpendicular to the plane of polish. Analysis. The thoria particle size was measured by a line intercept method perpendicular to the extrusion direction. Only particle sizes measuring 0.001 in. at X10,000 or larger could be extimated. Within limits of experimental error, particle size distribution appears to be unaffected by exposure, Fig. 2. To check structural stability further, a grain-growth evaluation was made. The number of grain-boundary intersections was counted at X500 on each of several traces normal to the extrusion direction for each condition. It can be seen from Table I that grain diameter appears unchanged by the 2000°F exposure. The slightly finer grain diameter after 200 hr may be attributed to variations in grain size from area to area in the original extrusion. From the present rather limited study of Ni-2 Th on, it appears that: 1) for time-temperature exposure up to 2000 hr at 2000°F (Larsen-Miller parameter = 57, homologous temperature = 0.8) thoria particles of the size studied are highly thermally stable; they do not significantly react, agglomerate, or diffuse; and

Industrial shale-oil operations in North America and Europe predated the Drake discovery, but, since then, most have succumbed to competition from petroleum. However, the existence of enormous oil-shale resources in the Green River formation of Colorado, Utah and Wyoming [estimated at over a trillion bbl of shale oil in place] and the advancement of United States oil- shale technology by research and development programs of government and industry during the past 15 years point to a natural partnership of petroleum and oil shale to meet the accelerating energy demands of the future. The utilization of oil shale is not a question of limited petroleum supplies, but one of economics. Two factors are expected to improve the economic outlook for industrial shale oil production -- a rise in petroleum replacement cost and further advances in oil-shale technology.

The four basic types of electric motors -squirrel-cage, wound rotor, synchronous and D.C. -are de-scribed, with particular reference to speed-torque characteristics. The three classifications of squirrel-cage motors, C.E.M.A. B, C and D, are compared, and methods of selection for specific drives are outlined. Wound rotor and synchronous motors are covered from the viewpoint of construction details, methods of operation and control required. The application of these motors to crushers, conveyors and ball mills is described and reasons for their selection are given. The application of D.C. motors to haulage equipment and mine hoist drives is included, and the basic principles of a variable voltage drive are illustrated. Efforts have been made through-out to provide specific examples of motor selection, with particular reference to the mining industry. THIS paper will attempt to answer the question -"which motor should be used for a specific drive?" Although it is impossible to cover the complete subject of electric motor application here, we hope to give some idea of the types of motors available and why certain types are used on specific applications.

Air compressor explosions that are caused by the ignition of combustible vapor mixtures cannot be explained by a single reaction mechanism or sequence of events. Explosions have been caused by the sudden release of large quantities of lubricating oil, by the rapid vaporization of oil that had accumulated slowly in high-pressure piping, and by the production of decomposition products from carbonaceous deposits. Ignitions can be caused by the heat produced in a catalytic reaction, in a compression process, or when a shock wave is propagated through a combustible vapor-air mixture. The frequency of these ignitions can be minimized by establishing proper maintenance and cleaning schedules. Further study is needed to satisfactorily correlate the various factors involved in compressor explosions.

While the brief discussion in each section of the report presents only the highlights of Bureau work during the year, details of many investigations can be found in publications cited in this text. Other work, reported here for the first time, will be covered in greater detail in later publications. Recent trends in coal research and technology both at home and abroad were reviewed in several publications2. Bureau research, as in the past3, continued to stress improved methods of mining, preparing, processing, and using coal. The program included a wide variety of applied and basic studies for developing information useful to the coal mining industry and the coal consumer while promoting wise conservation and utilization of our coal resources.

Consequently, under a cooperative agreement with the Alabama Power Co., Bureau engineers directed a series of experiments that were carried out on the property of the Alabama Power Co. at Gorgas, Ala. The purpose of underground gasification of coal, regardless of method used, is to obtain the energy contained in the fuel for use on the surface, without mining in the usual sense of the term. Underground gasification can be described as (1) a process where coal, in place, is consumed by partial combustion with air, oxygen, steam, or any combination of these to produce a low calorific value gas (80 to 300 Btu per cu ft) or (2) a complete combustion process in which air is used to produce a gas containing carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and considerable thermal energy.

The prevention of fires and explosions involving the combustibles and oxidants likely to be found in flight vehicles requires a knowledge of the flammability and related characteristics of these materials. This circular is a compilation of the available charactersilics data for a series of combustibles and oxidants of current interest. Vapor pressure data are presented for fluorine, oxygen, chlorine trifluoride, nitrogen tetroxide, nitric acid, hydrogen peroxide, ethylene oxide, hydrogen, ammonia, pentaborane, unsymmetrical dimethylhydrazine, monomethylhydrazine, hydrazine, and a series of hydro-carbons including decalin, tetralin, bicyclohexyl and other high-density fuels. In addition, flammability characteristics diagrams are included for each of the fuels in contact with air and, where available, other oxidants (for example, oxygen and nitrogen tetroxide). To assist in understanding these data, sections on definitions and theory and applications have been included. Each section is complete in itself and can be used separately. For example, a reader who is familiar with the general theory of combustion and detonation may find the data sections more useful than the definitions and theory and the application sections. However, since pertinent data are included in these sections, they should also prove useful to the experienced engineer interested in preventing fires and explosions.

In 1960, the Secretary of the Interior, acting under the provisions of Public Law 454, 80th Congress, appointed a Lignite Advisory Committee to aid in programming research on coal (lignite) of the north-central area. The chairman of this committee is the Secretary of the Interior or his delegated representative, and in all meetings held during 1960 and 1961, the Director of the Bureau of Mines, Marling J. The purpose of the investigation was to describe and appraise tungsten deposits in Montana . The work supplements previous investigations made by Pattee ( 10 ) and Walker ( 17 ) in selected areas of the State . Scheelite deposits in tactite are the most numerous and most important economically , having accounted for nearly all of the State's tungsten production . Of the 64 deposits examined during the current study , 50 contained scheelite , 11 hubnerite , 2 wolframite , and 1 ferberite . The State's major tungsten production has been from scheelite deposits in Beaverhead County . The report lists , by counties , the type and grade of each deposit . The more important occurrences are accompanied by geological and assay maps .

The Bureau of Mines studied coking rates of a special Columbia - Geneva six - coal blend to establish the effect of the coking rate on coke properties . The tests were conducted in a 500 - lb , 14 - in experimental slot oven at essentially constant conditions of blend composition , size distribution , surface moisture content , and bulk density . The coking rate was varied as a function of oven flue temperature . Coking rates within the range of 0.56 to 1.35 in/hr were achieved . Increase in the coking rate decreased the size of the coke . The stability factor of the coke showed no significant change with coking rate until coking rates greater than 1.0 in/hr were reached , after which a decrease in the stability factor was observed . The apparent specific gravity increased to a maximum value at coking rates approaching 1.1 in/hr and decreased sharply with further increase in the coking rate . Coke parameters correlated well with the coking rate .

The Bureau of Mines has been active in promoting the purchase of coal for Government use under specifications that define the requirements in terms of heating value of the coal , expressed in British thermal units , and the composition as shown by proximate analyses . To these , when required , are added the ash- softening temperature , the free - swelling index , and the Hardgrove grindability index . Under most of these specification contracts the bidders guarantee the quality of the coal , and that guaranteed by the successful bidder becomes the standard of his contract . The deliveries are sampled in accordance with instructions 4/ issued by the Bureau of Mines ; the samples are analyzed in the Bureau laboratory to determine whether the coal is of the quality guaranteed by the contractor and , if it is not , a price adjustment is made . Analyses of the delivered coal and tipple samples ( samples collected at mine tipples as coal is being loaded into railroad cars or trucks ) provide valuable data for use in evaluating future bids . In addition , the continuous sampling of coal as delivered is a check on the practical results obtained in burning the coal . The Government purchased approximately 5 million tons of coal in fiscal year 1962. In connection with these purchases , the Bureau analyzed 7,114 samples . These are published ( table 1 ) for the use of Government officials and the public . A series of publications has been completed on coal analyses by States or , where production is small in any one State , by groups of adjacent States . The Bureau of Mines made a laboratory study of the amenability of anorthosite rock ( from the San Gabriel Mountains , Los Angeles County , Calif . ) to treatment by the lime soda sinter process for the extraction of alumina . The study was done under a cooperative agreement with the California Division of Mines and Geology . This report presents the results of the investigation , and it includes a review of the geology of the deposit ( 7 ) by Dr. Gordon B. Oakeshott . Interest in the recovery of alumina from submarginal aluminum silicate ores is stimulated by the fact that the domestic aluminum industry depends on imports of bauxite for its alumina requirements . Of the 8.0 million long dry tons of high - grade bauxite consumed in 1961 for producing metallurgicalgrade alumina , only 0.9 million long tons , or 11 percent , was mined in this country . During past years many organizations have carried out research programs to determine if alumina could be extracted economically from such domestic ores as clays ( 3 , 4 ) , anorthosite ( 8 ) , and other silicate sources . Successful alumina extraction is the ultimate objective of the Bureau of Mines program.
