INTERNAL friction measurements, carried out as functions of temperature, have been used extensively to obtain data on the mobility of interstitial impurities in the Group V metals, vanadium, colum-bium, and tantalum. For a given frequency of vibration, the internal friction peaks at a temperature which depends principally on the particular metal and interstitial impurity. Relaxation times and corresponding activation energies are determined from a knowledge of such peak temperatures for various vibration frequencies. These experimentally determined relaxation times are related to the average jump frequencies of the interstitial impurity atoms using the model of Snoek1 and can be related to macroscopic diffusion coefficients as shown by Polder.2 In these Group V elements, the impurity whose diffusion rate has been the hardest to pin down by the internal friction technique has been carbon. The experimental difficulties associated with carbon in these metals were not evident in the earliest investigation carried out by Ke on tantalum.3 The carbon peak was thought to occur near 140°C at 1 cps on the basis of the enhancement of the height of this peak measured on specimens which had been coated with colloidal carbon and heated in vacuo at 1200°C. Presumably on the basis of similar evidence, Wert identified a peak also near 140°C at 1 cps in columbium with the diffusion of carbon in that element." Later, the difficulties of admitting carbon into these metals without simultaneously introducing oxygen were pointed out by Ang and Wert- nd by Marx, Baker, and Sivertsen.6 The latter suggested that the peaks attributed to carbon in tantalum and columbium might arise from the presence of traces of oxygen, adventitiously absorbed during the carburization. Such suspicion was confirmed, at least in tantalum, when it was found possible to prepare C-Ta specimens without contamination by oxygen. Specimens sci prepared, aitnough high in carbon content, gave no evidence of a damping peak near 140°C.7 Recently, the authors were able to Show that carbon diffuses in tantalum at a rate only slightly slower than that for nitrogen.8 At 1 cps, the carbon peak lies at 34g °C, only a few degrees above the nitrogen peak at 341 °C. However, the two could be distinguished by a different stability with respect to aging at 400 °C and by a different dependence of peak height on solute concentration. On the basis of this experience with tantalum, it appeared worthwhile to search also for a carbon peak in columbium in the vicinity of the nitrogen peak." In this report, the location of the carbon peak in columbium is made known and its position relative to the nitrogen peak is compared with the authors' previous findings in tantalum. In addition, a second source of internal friction seen only in specimens of very high purity is discussed. Columbium was obtained from the Fansteel Metallurgical Corp. as either 30 or 40 mil diam stock. The manufacturer gives the following analysis as typical of this material: 99.4 pct minimum Cb, 0.10 pct maximum C, 0.5 pct Ta, 0.04 pct Ti, 0.02 pct maximum Si, and 0.01 pct maximum Fe. Wires 13 in. long were degassed near 2200°C for 4 to 16 hr in an ultimate vacuum better than 2.10" mm Hg in an apparatus described previously.8 This treatment reduced the oxygen and nitrogen damping peaks observed in the as-received material to less than 0.0001 in Q-1 above background. The latter value varied somewhat from specimen to specimen in the range 0.0004 to 0.0008, depending chiefly on the wire diameter and the frequency of vibration. The high temperature evacuation left the specimen in a rather soft condition, the Vhn being reduced to 40 from a value near 121 in the as-received conGi~iur~. The gram size was about the diameter of the specimen. After outgassing, specimens were loaded with carbon by absorption of such hydracarbons as methane or ethylene. The original manuscript of section 2 of this series of miners' circulars devoted to accident prevention in bituminous-coal mines was completed in September 1944. At that time roof bolting had been tried with some success in the lead-mining district of south-eastern Missouri, but information on the subject was so fragmentary that it was not included as a method of roof support. References to roof support in bituminous-coal mines, therefore, were confined almost entirely to conventional timbering methods. In 1947 the Bureau instituted a research program and intensive study of the general problem of roof control, which emphasized roof-bolt application. The rapid increase in mechanized mining following the close of World War II provided the impetus for the Bureau's roof-control investigations, because the vertical supports used with conventional timber restricted the maneuverability of mechanical face equipment, and the industry wanted to explore every possible method of eliminating interference with the production cycle to gain full advantage of mechanized mining. Moreover, the accidental dislodgment of vertical supports greatly increased the roof-fall hazard. As roof falls have killed and seriously injured more mine workmen every year than any other cause or classification of injury since records have been kept, the Bureau assumed this investigative leadership with the prime objective of substantially reducing the annual toll from falls of roof, including falls of rib and face.

RIGHT NOW the Canadian oil business is suffering from growing pains brought on by developments outside our borders. I would like, therefore, to place our industry in perspective for you in two ways. I would like first to describe it briefly and let you see it in relation to the world oil industry. Then I would like to bring it back and place it into perspective against a strictly Canadian background. Naturally, in such a discussion, it is necessary to use a certain amount of statistical material. I'll endeavour, however, to keep it to a minimum. Eleven years ago, before the discovery of Leduc, Alberta could boast of having 21,000,000 barrels of crude oil reserves. Five years ago we had 1,810,000,000 barrels. At year end, 1957, our remaining recoverable reserves totalled more than 3,000,000,000 barrels. In 1957, our potential production in Alberta reached an all-time high of 756,000 barrels a day. Unfortunately, our actual average daily production dropped from 393,000 barrels per day in 1956 to 376,000 barrels per day in 1957. And in 1958, to date, it has dropped sharply to around 300,000 barrels per day.

This paper , which describes the mining methods and practices at the Hayden Creek lead mine of St. Joseph Lead Co. in southeast Missouri , is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining methods , practices , and costs in various mining districts of the United States . The Hayden Creek mine is in the W 1/2 sec . 7 , T. 36 N. , R. 4 E. , St. Francois County , Mo. , about 1 mile southwest of the town of Frankclay ( fig . 1) . The mine is on the west edge of the mining district known as the Lead Belt . However , neither the ore body nor the underground workings are connected with those of any other mine in the district . In contrast with most operations in the district , underground haulage is entirely trackless , and nearly complete delineation of the large , well -defined ore body by drilling permitted comprehensive planning of development and mining in advance of shaft sinking . The ore differs in character and occurrence from that of the main ore deposits in the Lead Belt in that the lead mineral , galena , occurs in the dolomitic matrix enclosing granite boulders instead of in dolomite limestone .

THE St. Lawrence Seaway Project ranks with the greatest engineering undertakings of all time. A summary of major materials going into the construction of this project, shown in Table I, will assist in an appreciation -of this fact. These data relate to Seaway construction only, and it should be remembered that two large-scale power projects are in the construction stage on the St. Lawrence river concurrently with construction of the Seaway. A project of such magnitude as the Seaway would attract widespread interest even if it were being constructed in a remote area. The fact that it is located in a heavily populated and developed section of both Canada and the United States has done much to enhance this interest, and in many ways complicates the problems confronting the engineer in the design and construction phases. Many consider the St. Lawrence Seaway to be a new idea that has developed within the past decade - such is far from the fact, because the St. Lawrence River canal systems have existed for more than a century, and the Seaway Project is but a new, larger, and more efficient version of a continually expanding facility.

THE Ontario Research Foundation has developed a process for producing low-density steel shapes by direct reduction of iron oxide powders. The process is a combination of reduction, sintering (without compaction), and carburizing, and has been described by Cavanagh (1). Iron oxide powder, in the form of mill scale or highly concentrated iron ore, carefully sized, is poured into a porous mould. A reducing agent, generally coke breeze, is placed around this mould in a heat resistant sagger which is sealed off and heated to 2,000°F. for a number of hours. The coke/ ore ratio, the particle size distribution, the temperature and time of soaking, and the size and shape of the reduced product, determine the densities and carbon contents attained. The Defence Research Board sponsored a programme of research into some of the mechanical properties of the material (which was named Controlled Density Steel) and this paper is an account of various factors which govern the tensile strength of the steel. The ?practically attainable range of density is from 1.5 to 5.5 gm./ cc. but higher densities are obtained on hot working. This paper, however, is restricted to discussion of results for moulded products.

This report presents low-temperature tar data from studies by the Bureau of Mines of tars produced in an externally heated (entrained state) pilot-plant-scale retort. Analytical data covering 20 low-temperature tars, derived from the. carbonization of various ranks of foreign and domestic coals, are tabulated. The character of the tar is discussed in relationship to carbonizing conditions and the rank of coal. It is seen that in carbonization techniques that employ entrainment or fluidization of the coal particle, carbonization conditions are secondary to coal rank with respect to tar-oil yields and composition. The influence of distillation conditions on recoverable yields of tar products is presented. The probable yield of commercially important chemical products, based on a ton of pure (moisture- and ash-free) coal, are predicted. INTRODUCTION Low-temperature tars produced by entrainment or fluidized carbonization techniques that employ internally heated reactors represent the most nearly primary tart produced by industrial processes. In brief, such a process involves the application of a heat gradient to the coal particle "boiling" or suspended in a turbulent state in the reactor chamber. Conditions are observed so that the coal particle remains suspended within the reaction zone by a gas stream for a time interval commensurate with maximum tar-oil yield. The heat necessary for the carbonization reaction may be obtained entirely from the hot (preheated) gas stream, or it may be derived partly from the combustion of the volatile products and char by the transport gases, usually air. The volatile material moves out of the carbonizing zone at a rate that approaches the velocity of the transport gas. Carbonizing conditions are ideal when a minimum particle residence time is obtained within the reactor at a given temperature and a maximum yield of condensable volatile matter is released. In industrial practice this objective is a compromise.

THE CRACKING AND POPPING of rock, often heard by men working underground, for years has been interpreted as a warning of danger and unstable ground. However, not until 1939 was it discovered that rock under stress generates subaudible and sometimes audible seismic disturbances (referred to as "micro-seismims" 4), which can be detected with the use of a suitable seismic apparatus. Since that date laboratory and field investigations have been in progress to ascertain to what extent this phenomenon can be utilized to detect, localize, and determine the magnitude of areas of instability in and around mine openings and to predict if and when failure will occur. These investigations have included a determination of the types of problems to which the method is applicable and the effect of rock type, geological defects, such as joints, fractures, faults, and other uncontrollable factors, on the reliability of results. Six reports have been prepared covering the investigations conducted between 1940 and 1952 (4-9). 5 These reports describe some of the characteristics of micro-seismims, as determined from both laboratory and field tests; the equipment used to pick up and record micro-seismims; the general test procedure and method of analyzing results; and applications of the method to specific mining problems.

The simultaneous solution of the volumerric balance and the unsteady-state equation has been used for several years to make performance calculations for combination drive reservoirs. This method makes possible the calculation of volumetric changes of fluids in the gas cap, oil zone, and aquifer which occur as a result of withdrawals and reservoir pressure changes. It does not provide a means for the determination of reservoir fluid distribution changes corresponding to these vollrmetric changes. A knowledge of the fluid saturation distribution in the reservoir at various stages of depletion is important for the determination of the efficiency of gas and water as oil-displacement media and, therefore, for the reliable predicrion of ultimate oil recovery. To provide this knowledge, the displacement equations are solved simultaneously with the volumetric balance and unsteady-state equations. The described calculation procedure has been used satisfactorily to analyze the past performance and to predict the future behavior of combination drive reservoirs under both primary and pressure-maintenance operations. INTRODUCTION The three basic mechanisms by which oil is displaced from a reservoir are: (1) dissolved gas drive—the displacement of oil by the expansion of liberated solution gas, (2) water drive—the displacement of oil by water which enters the oil zone from the aquifer, and (3) gas cap drive—the displacement of oil by gas which ex- pands into the oil zone from the gas cap. The action of gravitational forces may be effective in increasing the efficiency of the basic drive mechanisms. Gravitational forces favor the segregation both of gas and oil and of oil and water, thus tending to shorten the transition zone between oil and displacing fluids. Most reservoirs produce under the influence of a combination of these drives and are designated "combination drive reservoirs". Fig. 1 is a cross section of a typical combination drive reservoir. A calculation procedure for analyzing the performance of combination drive reservoirs has been developed by combining the displacement equations' with the volumetric balance equation' and the unsteady-state equations. The pressure-production performance and the positions of the gas-oil and oil-water contacts are calculated for several stages of reservoir depletion by solving these equations simultaneously, thus affording a basis for: 1. Determining instantaneous and ultimate oil, gas, and water production under various operating conditions. 2. 'Establishing a maximum efficient rate of production, 3. Determining the advantages of pressure maintenance and unitization, and 4. Designing surface installations necessary for primarv and pressure-maintenance operations. This report develops equations for decline curve analysis based upon the premise that the rate of change of the reciprocal of decline for succeeding time intervals is constant when the reservoir is produced under a fixed set of conditions. A method is shown for predicting maximum production rate against cumulative production for any reservoir. A method is also presented for predicting future production rate by an analysis of past production performance after decline has been esrahlished. INTRODUCTION No significant contribution to the analysis of decline curves by the loss-ratio method has been made since J. J. Arps paper1. The concept of loss-ratio that was developed by Arps and his contemporaries has been redefined in another way and the concept of instantaneous loss-ratio at time zero has been added. In the mathematical developmerit by Arps, production rate was related as a continuous function with time and his equatlons were developed on that basis. In this paper, production is considered to be a series of segments for equal time intervals and equations have been developed based upon these finite differences. It is realized that decline curve analysis is not the answer to all predictions of reservoir behavior. However, as production must decline from an initial maximum rate to zero in any reservoir, if such decline can be expressed as an infinite series, this series should accurately predict production. Decline curve analysis should be considered a valuable tool that may be used in conjunction with predictions of future recoveries by other methods. Various uses of the decline curve method will be discussed in this paper. Equations predicting production rate at any time and cumulative production by exponential and hyperbolic decline will be developed. Characteristic values of b related to various types of drive will be discussed. After that a hypothetical reservoir will be studied and ultimate recovery by natural depletion and pressure maintenance compared, then actual field examples will be shown and discussed. The rate-cumulative curve introduced by H. N. Marshs in 1928 is an important one for use in estimating future production rate and ultimate recovery. This graphical method is the one that is used in conjunction with the equations to be developed for predicting production behavior. EXPONENTIAL DECLINE In exponential decline each succeeding production rate per unit of time is a constant percentage of the production rate just before it. Mercury was produced originally at the Idaho Almaden mine from 1939 to 1942. When the ;.nine was shut down, more than 100,000 tons of ore, containing from 2.5 to 3 pounds of mercury per ton, was known to be adjacent to old workings but had been considered too low grade for commercial operation. Later, detailed, systematic exploration by Rare Metals Corporation of America increased and delimited enough minable reserves for further operation to be foreseen for several years. The average grade of the ore is estimated at slightly more than 3.5 pounds of mercury per ton. Open-pit mining and installation of the largest rotary kiln in the United States furnacing mercury ore have made possible profitable exploitation of these reserves (fig. 1). The bulk of the exploration was by percussion drilling, although some diamond drilling was done to check the results. When enough reserves were indicated to assure a successful operation, stripping and plant construction were started simultaneously. Figure 2 is a general view of the plant. The ore bodies, although irregular in size, shape, and grade and covered by essentially barren cap rock, are amenable to low-cost, trackless, open-pit mining. Development consists of stripping the overburden and removing, barren cap rock. Ore is being mined at approximately [5],000 tons per month and treated in a 175-ton-per-day furnacing plant.

This is the first of a series of reports on the relation between microscopic composition and chemical and physical properties of banded bituminous coals. It describes the relation between microscopic composition and behavior during thermal decomposition of a heterogeneous, high-volatile A bituminous coal from the Chilton bed in West Virginia. The standard free-swelling test was used as a simple means of studying the effect of heat on the coal. Although swelling indexes are not precise indicators of coal behavior in the coke oven and have limited value in caking investigations, they are reliable for predicting expansion of coal in a fuel bed and have practical value in the study of fuels. The swelling test also supplements other useful laboratory tests for determining the plastic and expansion properties of coal.

THE EXCUSE for producing still another paper dealing with the oilfields of the Middle East is the overwhelming importance of this area to everyone, both inside and out of the oil industry. Figure 1 shows the area defined as the Middle East for the purpose of this paper. No description of what constitutes the Middle East is generally acceptable to everyone and, in fact, in many parts of the world it is referred to as "Western Asia". At the time ?the writer went to work as a geologist in the Middle East -this was in 1926 -there were just three known oilfields, namely, Hurghada in Egypt, Naft Khaneh in the Transferred Territories of Iraq, and Masjid-i-Sulai-man in Persia. Their combined producing rate at that time was around 100,000 barrels per day. Toda y, just thirty years later, some forty-two fields have been proven to exist, and a recent discovery in Syria -if commercial -may add one more to the list. Producing rates at the end of last year ( 1956) were approaching four million barrels per day. This sizable figure re presents nearly 23 per cent of the total Free World's production. What is more important still, something over 70 per cent of the Free World's proven oil reserves are known to exist in the subsoil of the Middle East.

The object of this report is to present certain pertinent data on the physical and chemical properties of South Arcot lignite and to present the results of several special tests to show how the raw lignite can be upgraded to superior fuels for certain special uses. The Bureau of Mines Branch of Coal Technology laboratories at Denver have advocated the drying and carbonization of all low-rank fuels for special uses and have introduced and developed new techniques for upgrading and refining noncoking coals. Application of these techniques to the South Arcot lignites was the object of the investigation, and this report presents significant data necessary for planning a fuel program based on utilization of dried and carbonized dusts. In general, the South Arcot lignite is similar in chemical properties to the high-moisture lignites found in the United States and has some physical properties similar to Australian brown coals. The samples submitted for test had lost moisture before delivery to the laboratory, and it has been necessary to estimate the analysis of the lignite in place in the mine. Various observations made in India by qualified technicians indicate that the bed moisture content of the entire seam is in the range of 54 to 56 percent. For estimating purposes in this report, the bed moisture content has been taken as 56 percent and the ash content of the fresh coal as 2.5 percent. This report presents the results of laboratory mineral-dressing investigations by the Bureau of Mines of 14 individual or composite character samples from deposits in the Batesville manganese district. It will be noted that some concentrates have met or approached analytical specifications for metallurgical manganese ore although great variations in both physical and chemical composition from once deposit to another make each a new problem. In most cases it is evident that a substantial loss of manganese has occurred in the various slime and tailing products. An important aspect of this work is the research being conducted on manganese-bearing limestones. Recent reconnaissance indicates that this resource constitutes one of the major domestic reserves of manganese. Laboratory study has shown that ferrograde concentrates can be recovered from samples of manganese-bearing limestones from two properties. Research on samples from other areas is still underway.

The Korean crisis and the cessation of Russian manganese-ore shipments to the United States in 1950 reemphasized the almost total dependence of the domestic steel industry on foreign supplies for metallurgical-grade manganese ore. In this emergency, Congress authorized the Bureau of Mines to undertake experimental mine and process development work on the known large reserves of low-grade manganese ore in the Artillery Mountains region in Mohave County, Ariz. The objective of the work was to obtain the basic mining and metallurgical data needed to make specific plans for initiating exploitation of the deposits within 3 years if high-grade foreign ore could not be obtained during the emergency. The manganese deposits of the Artillery Mountains region are in an area of about 25 square miles on the north side of the Bill Williams River in southern Mohave County. Lasky, of the Federal Geological Survey, has estimated reserves at 175 million tons of manganiferous material assaying 3.5 to 4 percent Mn. Although the man¬ganese occurs in various Tertiary and Quaternary formations as both bedded and fissure vein deposits, the more important syngenetic deposits are found in upper and lower manganiferous zones in the sedimentary beds of playa and alluvial fan origin that constitute the Chapin Wash formation.

A consumable-electrode arc-melting furnace was constructed at the Bureau of Mines Physical Metallurgy Laboratory, College Park, Md., for the production of uncontaminated titanium and titanium-alloy ingots. The furnace was designed to allow for evacuating to very low pressures and back filling with helium and argon mixtures for melting at or near atmospheric pressure. Vacuum melting at a few millimeters pressure was also used with a mixture of helium and argon gas sweeping the crucible. For research purposes a 25- to 30-pound ingot, 4 inches in diameter by 15 inches in length, was selected to provide, enough 1/2-inch plate for extensive tensile and impact testing of standard size specimens. Enough plate was also provided for testing by other Government laboratories. The homogeneity of several alloy ingots was determined, and excellent results were obtained. By using a large electrode-to-ingot-area ratio and high currents or power inputs to the arc furnace rather uniform ingots were routinely prepared.

This paper on methods and costs of mining and milling iron ore at the Iron Mountain mine of Ozark Ore Co., St, Francois County, Mo., is one of a series of Bureau of Mines reports on methods, practices, and costs of mining and milling throughout the United States. The Iron Mountain operation is notable for its successful transition from open-pit to underground mining, for use underground of large earth-moving equipment, and for development of a multilevel room-and-pillar mining method. Milling methods also have undergone transitions - from hand sorting and log washing in the early days to gravity concentration.
