A simplified method of assessing the characteristics of a cleaning unit, including washability curves, yield figures, ash error, separating gravities, and error curve. FOR more than 25 years evaluations of coal cleaning units have appeared in many publications, and during this time considerable progress has been made in developing the theory and techniques of calculating washery results. A variety of characteristics have been defined over the years, many receiving general recognition during the first post-war Coal Preparation Conference in Paris in 1950. Coal preparation has become a science, and the approach to preparation problems is being revolutionized. Formerly, for example, if a coal operator wanted to know the performance of a given cleaning unit for a particular grade of his run-of-mine, he either shipped a carload to the manufacturer for a test run or relied on a report of a test carried out on a coal similar to the one he intended to clean. In modern practice the expensive, time-consuming test work generally can be avoided if the washability curves of the coal in question and the error curve of the cleaner are known. Normally a guarantee can be given on the strength of this information. General acceptance of modern standards has thus reduced the need for pilot-scale models of existing types of coal cleaners. Needless to say, the method requires exhaustive and accurate information on the cleaning unit and on all the additional circumstances affecting its results, information that ultimately can be secured only from actual tests made in the laboratory or in the washery. It is not the purpose of the present discussion to compare the merits of various characteristics, but to describe the general method of calculation, including a method of obtaining data with a minimum of laboratory work. All data presented here were derived from tests made at the plant with portable field equipment, using small quantities of varsol, carbon tetrachloride, and bromoform. It will be explained later that the use of standard fractional ash contents designated normalized ash contents aids considerably in reducing the routine testing of coal cleaners. Like any other statistical procedure, this method has limitations, and it is not recommended for any work in connection with guarantees. Even a varying commodity such as coal, however, will follow the law of large numbers, which is the basic law of statistics, thus allowing simplification of test work without appreciable loss of accuracy. The characteristics needed for evaluating cleaner performance are normally derived from a float-sink analysis of samples of the clean coal and the refuse, followed by ash determinations of the various fractions. THE fact that coals of different ranks and even of the same rank differ greatly in their amenability to iroth flotation is well known. In recognition of the need for an explanation of this phenomenon, two hypotheses have been suggested. Wilkinsl reported that the floatability of coals increased with an increase of the carbon content or rank. This postulate is handicapped by the fact that bituminous coals that possess moderate carbon contents are actually more floatable than anthracite coals that have high carbon contents, as shown in columns 6 and 9 of Table I. Taggart and his associates' implied that the difference of floatability between bituminous and anthracite coal was caused by the variation of carbon-hydrogen ratio. This is not applicable to the relative floatability of other coals and carbons. For example, column 11 of Table I shows that the carbon-hydrogen ratios of low-floating lignitic coal and non-floating animal charcoal are not only smaller than the moderate-floating anthracite coal, but are also similar to the high-floating bituminous coal. Furthermore, according to this hypothesis, high temperature coke-A (464), Ceylon graphite (1238), and lamp-black (357), all possessing extremely high carbon-hydrogen ratios, should be less floatable than other substances having much lower carbon-hydrogen ratios such as high volatile-B bituminous coal (11.9 to 22), anthracite coal (35.7 to 60.5), lignitic coal (15.6 to 33.6), and charcoal (13 to 26.2). However the former group is actually more floatable than the latter group. In this paper, a surface components hypothesis is Proposed to explain the different floatabilities of coals, carbons, and hydrocarbon minerals. The validity of the hypothesis is experimentally supported by the actual floatability, natural floatability, wettability, and adsorbability for neutral oils of coals, carbons, and hydrocarbon minerals tested. The combustible recovery of the flotation results, as used in this paper. was calculated from Eq. 1: P (100-Ep) 100 RWCP Rc= [1] F (100-E,) C, where R, is the percent combustible recovery; F and P are, respectively, the weight of feed and the weight of concentrate or product; E, and Ep are, respectively, the total percent of ash plus moisture in feed and in concentrate; Ru. is the percent weight recovery: and C, and C, are, respectively, the percent of combustible in feed and in concentrate. Except for ash and moisture content, all chemical components of a coal are assumed combustible. The experimental work included studies on flotation, ultimate and proximate analyses, contact angle tests, extractions of bitumen-A with benzene, adsorptions for liquid hydrocarbons, and wetting tests. Most of the flotation experiments were performed in a laboratory Fagergren machine; others were tested in a small Denver machine. The solid feed for the former was 300 g and for the latter was 30 g. The solid materials used for flotation were crushed to —48 mesh. After the mineral pulp in the flotation cell was agitated for 6 min and the pH was adjusted to 7.5 & 0.2 with sodium hydroxide or hydrochloric acid, a petroleum light oil having a viscosity of 5.73 centipoises at 77 °F was added and conditioned for 2 min. Finally, pine oil was introduced and the froth was collected for exactly 3 min. The weight ratio of petroleum light oil to pine oil was kept constant at 1.5 to 1. Tap water was used for all flotation tests. Contact angles were measured with a captive bubble machine. For each coal sample, three specimens were mounted in transoptic mounts and polished with levigated alumina, first on a sheet glass, then on a cloth-covered metal polishing wheel. The polished specimen was first washed with distilled water and wiped thoroughly on a cleaned linen pad, then transferred into the pyrex cell of the captive bubble machine and conditioned for 6 min., and finally measured for contact angles at three or more points. Except where otherwise stated, the induction time for each measurement was 1 min. The contact angle representing each material was obtained by averaging the measurements of three specimens. The linen pad was first washed with warm distilled water, then boiled 30 min in a 2N sodium hydroxide solution, and finally washed with distilled water until no trace of sodium hydroxide could be detected in the decanted solution. The cleaned linen pad was stored under distilled water. Immediately before using, the pad was rewashed and transferred into a clean pyrex petri dish partly filled with distilled water. The glassware and rubber gloves used were cleaned by soaking in sulphuric acid-potassium dichromate cleaning solution, followed by rinsing with distilled water. The polished specimens were handled only by glass forceps. The ultimate and proximate analyses were made in accordance with the ASTM standard procedures for coal and coke. The extractable bitumen-A was determined by weighing 1 g of —100 mesh sample and placing it in a desiccated and weighed ASTM aluminum-extraction thimble. The thimble was placed in condenser hooks and inserted into an extraction flask containing 100 cu cm of benzene. The flask was heated and the benzene vapor was condensed by water coils. At the end of 24 hr of percolation, the thimble was removed, desiccated, and weighed. Loss in weight of sample was taken as bitumen-A and calculated to dry and ash-free basis.

In the fall of 1953 the Philippine Bureau of Mines, under a Foreign Operations Administration Technical Assistance (FOA-TA) program, began a systematic investigation of the nickel content of the well-known Surigao laterite areas, on the island of Nonoc northeast of Mindanao, to determine the occurrence, distribution, and grade of nickel contained in the laterite and in the subjacent serpentine. At the same time, a technical review of the possibility of producing commercial ferronickel from the nickeliferous materials in the Philippine Islands was made, and a smelting process was suggested. The proposed process would be similar to that developed by the Federal Bureau of Mines for the reduction of the nickeliferous serpentine occurring in the Nickel Mountain ?deposit at Riddle, Oreg. The potential avail-ability of electric power from the Maria Cristina facilities at 3 mils per kw.-hr. would enhance the economic possibility of this program. Development of an economically feasible process for recovering nickel from the nickeliferous serpentines and laterites should lead to the establishment of a new industry in the Philippines, to the development of a source of nickel in the Far East, of which at present there is none, and to partial solution of the problem of supplying the free world with nickel. Enough preliminary reconnaissance had been completed by early 1954 to permit sampling of the deposit for metallurgical investigations. The FOA then requested the Federal Bureau of Mines Northwest Electrodevelopment Laboratory, Albany, Oreg., to conduct preliminary electric smelting studies on nickeliferous serpentine and laterite samples.

NINE-TENTHS of the total anthracite deposits of North America are in Pennsylvania. Corrosion of pumping equipment by acid mine waters has been experienced at tremendous cost by mining companies in the anthracite region of Pennsylvania, for many years in many ways. The design and specifications of the large centrifugal pumps as provided in the proposed mine-drainage system (7-35, 45, 46, 48, 54, 64, 70, 71)° make it imperative that a metal or alloy be recommended that has the highest corrosion resistance and, at the same time, acceptable properties suitable for general workability (welding and machining). This report presents data on the corrosive and erosive effects of acid mine waters in the anthracite region on metals and alloys for pumping equipment and drainage facilities necessary to remove or control this water.

This is particularly true of the eastern portion of Canada and especially so of the ( authors') province of Nova Scotia. Much has been said about the trying economic straits of the coal industry in Nova Scotia ( 1), faced, as it is, with difficult mining problems, with considerable distance from large markets, and with •competition from other (and usually foreign) fuels. One of the important problems confronting oil producers in appraising the possibilities of secondary recovery in many California fields is the effect of viscosity on oil recovery by water flooding. In January 1954 there were 554 fields and/or pools, in the State, that produced 1 million barrels daily, and 138 of these pools produced approximately 267 thousand barrels daily of heavy crude oil having gravities below 200 API. Many of these fields are nearing the end of their primary economic life and still have high residual-oil saturations, a favorable factor in water flooding. The crux of the problem is whether or not enough oil can be recovered from these fields by water flooding to make the operation economically successful. Some experiments on the relationship between viscosity and oil recovery have been made by other investigators, but in most instances the viscosity of the oils used in the experiments was lower than the viscosity of the oils found in many of the heavy-oil fields in California. A study was undertaken, therefore, to determine the relationship between oil viscosity and recovery over a wider range of viscosities and to compare the experimental results with those predicted by theoretical calculations.

1. This investigation shows that the Sewanee bed is the only coal bed being mined in Sequatchie County. Other coal beds are present, but as they do not contain known recoverable reserves, estimates of reserves were made only for the Sewanee bed. 2. Known measured and indicated reserves in the Sewanee bed, based on a minimum thickness of 14 inches and on 1,800 short tons per acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated to be 76 million short tons as of January 1, 1953. Of this total 62 million short tons represent coal 28 inches and more thick. Areas in the bed were omitted from the estimate because available data relative to the bed characteristics were insufficient to permit making an estimate conforming with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these areas, such reserves should be added to the total estimated reserves determined by this investigation.

THIS REPORT covers the third in a series of five projects into which the Conowingo tunnel system has been divided for geographical and practical reasons. It outlines the work constituting Project No.3 that consists principally of the following: (a) To sink the No. 15 shaft and extend the Alden, Sugar Notch, Baltimore No.2, and Laflin shafts from their present depths to tunnel level; (b) to drive a tunnel off these shafts to connect with the western end of the tunnel in Project No.1 (Lackawanna) and to a point 1 mile south of the No. 15 shaft; (c) to construct an emergency pumping plant at the No. 15 shaft, complete with 3 centrifugal pumps of 200-cubic-foot-per-second (c. f. s.) capacity each, and a discharge-water shaft and a discharge tunnel for conducting the water from the pumping plant into the Susquehanna River; and (d) to construct a lateral tunnel 1 mile long off the main tunnel in the vicinity of the No. 15 shaft, to be known as the Wyoming lateral. The project, as outlined, is a self-contained drainage unit that will permit unwatering inundated mines and safeguarding active mines in the Wyoming Basin of the Northern field and also will handle the water in the Lackawanna Basin, thus permitting the temporary pumping plant provided in Project No.1 to be discontinued. The pumps installed in the temporary pumping plant provided in Project No.1 can then be moved to the emergency pumping plants recommended in Projects Nos. 2 and 3, to be installed as the third or standby unit.

The Black Mesa coal field is part of the Hopi and Navajo Indian Reservation in Apache, Navajo, and Coconino Counties, Ariz. The field is in an isolated area with the nearest railroad 70 to 90 miles to the south. Travel is restricted by roads that become impassable during inclement weather. The area is a mesa and rises from 500 to 2,000 feet above the surrounding territory. Water is very scarce, and the nearest stream of any consequence is the Colorado River about 90 miles northwest from the center of the field. Coal beds are found in the Mesaverde formation of the Cretaceous age, but they are uncorrelated and range from subbituminous to bituminous in rank. Huddle2/ estimates the reserves of subbituminous coal in Arizona at about 15 billion tons, most of which is in the Black Mesa field. The geology of the field has been reported by Campbell and Gregory.3/ Coal production is small, and the output is used almost exclusively for domestic fuel in the Indian schools, missions, and trading posts.

THIS REPORT covers the second in a series of five projects into which the Conowingo tunnel system has been divided for geographical and practical reasons. It outlines the construction work contemplated-to sink two shafts on the line of the main tunnel that are designated the Nos. 9A and 11 shafts, to turn off from the No. 9A shaft the Lansford and Lykens laterals, and to drive portions of the main tunnel. An emergency pumping plant, consisting of 2 separate pumprooms, each containing 3 horizontal-type centrifugal pumps of 100,000-gallons-per-minute (g. p. m.) capacity, will be constructed at the No. 9A shaft. From the No. 11 shaft will be turned off the Trevorton lateral and portions of the main tunnel, which will connect with the section driven from the No. 9A shaft. Under the proposed project, the Lansford lateral will be driven for a distance of 2 miles, the Lykens lateral for a distance of 10.56 miles, and the Trevorton lateral for a distance of 20 miles. To drive the Lykens and Trevorton laterals for the distance indicated, several construction shafts and slopes must be sunk to permit efficient and safe construction.

The major industrial uses of char or semicoke produced by low-temperature carbonization of coal4/ are as fuel for generating electric power, for blending with metallurgical coking coal as a substitute for low-volatile coals, and for gasification to produce synthesis gas for chemical purposes. This paper discusses various methods for carbonizing coal, emphasizing processing of the noncoking coals to produce char for thermal power-plant fuel and for blending with metallurgical coking coals and tar for chemical use. Low-temperature carbonization is a relatively simple processing step involving heating coal to about 900° to 1,200° F. to decompose the coal into 4 main products: (1) Semicoke or char; (2) complex, partly oxygenated liquid hydrocarbons or tar; (3) fixed gases; and (4) water. If the coal is heated rapidly under conditions that prevent decomposition of the primary products, 68 to 87 percent of the net heat in the raw coal is left in the char and 10 to 23 percent of the potential heat appears in the primary tar. Fixed gases represent approximately 7 percent of the heat and approximately 2 percent is lost or dissipated in the reactions of decomposition. Considering the different ranks of coal in the United States, the yield of tar will vary from about 9 to 44 gallons per ton, therefore it is important that each coal be carefully considered if it is to be carbonized for industrial use.

This report presents the results of washability examinations of seven coals from the principal coal-producing fields of Montana. A complete performance test of the Baum-type jig operated at one of the mines is included, as are the results of cleaning tests made on two of the coals in a dense-medium pilot plant. The coals examined from the Red Lodge, Bull Mountain, and Forsyth fields are comparatively easy to clean. Ash contents of 5 to 10 percent can be obtained at yields of washed coal ranging from 90 to 95 percent. The coal from the Great Falls field, however, could not be cleaned readily to less than 14 percent ash, and the rejection of impurity would amount to over 25 percent. The two coals treated in the dense-medium pilot plant were characterized by sharp separation of impurity, high recovery efficiency, and satisfactory reduction in ash content.

'"THE Federal Coal Mine Safety Act (public Law T. 552. 82nd Congress) was approved oil July 16, 1952. It incorporates, as Title I, the Coal Mine Inspectio1.1 and Investigation Act of May 7. 1941 (Public Law 49, 77th Congress), which gave Federal inspectors only the right to enter. coal mines for inspection and investigation purposes but no power to require compliance with their recommendations. Title 11 contains the enforcement provisions of the act; its purpose is to prevent major disasters in coal mines from explosions, fires. inundations. and man-trip 01. man-hoist accidents. At this point a brief account of events that preceded the enactment of the Federal Coal Mine Safety Act seems appropriate. The hazardous nature of coal mining was recognized by the Federal Govermment as long ago as 1865, when a bill to create a Federal Mining Bureau was introduced in Congress. Little was done, however, until a series of appalling coalmine disasters during the first decade of this century provoked a demand for Federal action. As a result an act of Congress established a Bureau of Mines in the Department of the Interior on July 1, 1910. The act made it clear that one of the foremost activities of the Bureau should be to improve health and safety in the mineral industries. One of the first projects selected by the small folce of engineers and technicians then employed was to determine the causes of coal-mine explosions and the means to prevent them. By investigations aftel mine disasters the fundamental causes and means of prevention were soon discovered, and the coal mining industry was informed accordingly. However, despite this knowledge and the enactment of State laws and the Federal Coal Mine Inspection and Investigation Act of 1941, mine disasters continued to occur with disheartening frequency and staggering loss of life. The devastating explosion at the Orient No. 2 mine on December 21, 1951, resulted in the death of 119 men. The Orient disaster rekindled the memory of the Centralia. Ill., disaster of March 25. 1947, which caused the death of 111 coal miners. These two tragedies ultimately brought about enactment of the Federal Coal Mine Safety Act. The act is a compromise measure. Senator Matthew M. Neely of West Virginia and Congressman Melvin Priec of Illinois introduced almost identical versions in the 82nd Congress, but they were considered too drastic. The final version was introduced by Congressman Samuel K. McConnel, Jr., of Pennsylvania, after considerable discussion and amendment in committee hearings. It was passed by the Congress and became effective when signed by the President on July 16, 1952. The act is somewhat limited in scope because it applies only to approximately 2000 coal mines in the United States and Alaska that employ regularly 15 or more individuals underground. It exempts approximately 5300 mines employing regularly fewer than 15 individuals underground and all strip mines, of which there are about 800. Moreover, it covers only conditions and practices that may lead to major disasters from explosion, fire, inundation, or man-trip or man-hoist accidents. According to Bureau records, such accidents have resulted in less than 10 pct of all the fatalities in coal mines. It is important to mention that the law is not designed to prevent the day-to-day type of accidents that have caused the remaining 90 pct or more of the fatalities, because it was the specific intention of the Congress to reserve the hazards which caused them to the jurisdiction of the coal-producing states. Many who opposed any Federal legislation that would give the Federal inspectors authority to require compliance with mine safety regulations claimed that such legislation would usurp or infringe upon States' rights. To assure that the principle of States' rights would be preserved, the act provides for joint Federal-State inspections when a state desires to cooperate in such activities. The Director of the Bureau of Mines is required by the act to cooperate with the official mine-inspection or safety agencies of the coal-producing states. The act provides further that any state desiring to cooperate in making joint inspections may submit a State plan for carrying out the purposes of this part of the act. Certain requirements are listed: these must be met by a state before the plan can be accepted. The Director of the Bureau of Mines, however, is required to approve any State plan which complies with the specified provisions. The Director may withdraw his approval and declare such a plan inoperative if he finds that the State agency is not complying with the spirit and intent of any provision of the State plan. When this paper was prepared, agreements for joint Federal-State inspections had been entered into with Wyoming and Washington. A few other states have indicated their desire to submit a State plan and negotiations toward that end are now under way. Reluctance to enter into such agreements may be due to the mine operators' knowledge that in the states that adopt a cooperative plan they are prohibited from applying to the Director of the Bureau of Mines for annulment or revision of an order issued by a Federal inspector and must appeal directly to the Federal Coal Mine Safety Board of Review for such action. Experience has proved that review by the Director as provided in the act is a less expensive and time-consuming procedure to all concerned than applying to the Board. Reluctance also may stem from the fact that joint Federal-State inspections somewhat restrict the movements of the State mine inspectors and tend to reduce the number of inspections of mines. Where a State plan is not adopted, the Federal coal mine inspector is responsible under the law to take one of two courses of action if he finds certain hazardous conditions during his inspections. The first action involves imminent danger. If a Federal inspector finds danger that a mine explosion, mine fire, mine inundation, or man-trip or man-hoist accident will occur in a mine immediately or before the imminence of such danger can be elim-

The production operation of a Kerpely gas producer at Louisiana, Mo., is described. This unit, originally designed for airblown operation was modified to permit using oxygen in the blast in place of air. The first runs J for test purposes, were made in June 1950. After this, seven production runs were made and these are the subject of this report. Total gasification time was 245 days. In each run, Nut or Pea coke or mixtures of both at a rate varying from 1,700 to 2,300 pounds per hour was converted with oxygen and saturated steam to produce synthesis gas - primarily carbon monoxide and hydrogen -approximating a predetermined rate of 80,000 to 95,000 cu. ft. per hour and a predetermined hydrogen-carbon monoxide ratio, The requirements per 1,000 std. cu. ft. of (CO + H2) were 21.6 to 30 pounds of coke, 213 to 267 std. cu. ft. of oxygen, and 3L4 to 47.B pounds of steam.

The accurate evaluation of reservoir-performance characteristics in the secondary recovery of petroleum by water flooding requires use of a water tracer that may be injected into water-input wells and detected at oil-production wells to supplement data obtained from core analyses, wellhead tests, and subsurface measurements. Radioactive iodine has been used successfully as a water tracer in field tests to determine: (I) relative rates and patterns of flow of injected water between water-input and oil-production wells and (2) zones of excessive water entry into oil-production wells. Laboratory evaluations of potential water tracers, previous tracer studies, the value of using a radioactive tracer, general field procedures, and the use of surface and subsurface instruments for the detection of the emitted gamma radiation, are summarized. Data from the field tests are presented graphically and discussed in detail. It is concluded that the radioactive-tracer method, using radioactive iodine, may be used successfully to measure either the relative rates and patterns of flow or zones of excessive water entry into wells under conditions of comparatively rapid transit time between wells. INTRODUCTION Extensive use is made of data obtained from core analyses, wellhead tests, fluid characteristics, and subsurface measurements in evaluating the sweep efficiency of water injected into oil sands for the recovery of oil. Theoretical flow rates and patterns may be calculated from those data using radial-flow formulas, if it is assumed that the physical conditions in the productive formation are homogeneous. Unfortunately, homogeneous conditions rarely, if ever, exist in oil-productive formations. The use of a tracer that may be injected into an oil sand and detected quantitatively, or even qualitatively, at offsetting oil-production wells provides basic data that may be used in determining more accurately the subsurface rates and patterns of flow of injected water between wells than is possible by theoretical calculations based on assumed conditions. Consideration of the data obtained by using a water tracer assists in the application of remedial measures to water-input wells, such as plugging of channels, or selective plugging of highly permeable zones, thereby effecting a more uniform flood and a greater ultimate oil recovery. A water tracer should have the following characteristics: (1) low adsorption on solid reservoir material; (2) high solubility in water; (3) low or negligible solubility in crude petroleum; (4) a wide range of solubility of compounds that may be formed by chemical reactions with ions present in reservoir rocks or waters; (5) high detectability in low concentrations by portable apparatus; and (6) general availability at low cost. Additional desirable characteristics are that the tracer should be nonhazardous in nature under normal working conditions and quantitatively detectable in the well bore, as well as at the surface. Review of Previous Tracer Studies The need for a water tracer has been recognized for many years. As far back as 1906, Dole1 described the use of fluorescein in flow-rate studies made in France in 1901. Any explanation of the nature of multiphase fluid flow through porous media must ultimately involve a knowledge of the mechanism of such flow through the individual pores of the medium. To provide quantitative information of the latter type, a study was made of gas-liquid and liquid-liquid displacements in single uniform Pyrex capillaries with diameters as small as 4 microns. Quantitative observation of air-liquid displacements with zero contact. angle indicates the adequacy of a model based on Poiseuille's Law and the independence of capillary pressure and interfacial velocity. Consequently, this work discounts previous claims that flow is abnormally retarded in very small capillaries. For the displacement of a very viscous oil by water in a capillary initially filled with water, flow is faster than predicted by the above model. This behavior is probably due to the existence of a thin annular film of water between the oil column and the capi1lary wall as postulated by Yuster. INTRODUCTION The need for experimental observation of the microscopic nature of multiphase fluid flow, to further the understanding of the results of macroscopic flow investigations, has been previously recognized. Chatenever and Calhoun1 in connection with the API Project 47B have extensively studied the flow of fluids through layers of glass or lucite spheres between glass or lucite plates. Lowman2 prepared an interesting film concerning flow in a single capillary, using an apparatus which made a moving interface appear stationary in the field of a microscope. The purpose of the present investigation was to deter- mine what contribution might be made to this field by comprehensive quantitative observation of gas-liquid and liquid-liquid displacements in single capillaries of uniform, very small diameter. The techniques used are similar to those of Lowman but incorporate improvements necessary for quantitative work. Quantitative observations must begin with fluids of simple chemical composition to provide a basis for analyzing the more complex behavior that may be expected with natural reservoir fluids. However, some qualitative observations on systems involving crude oils are presented. Experiments of this sort involve the observation of the velocity of the interface separating two fluids, and have been performed in horizontal or vertical capillaries by several investigators.3,4,5,6,7,8 The most general treatment of their mechanics, by Brittin,9 involves forces due to capillarity, viscous resistance, gravity, an "end-drag" effect, and the rate of change of momentum of the capillary contents. Since the range of pore diameters of interest in petroleum reservoirs is about 0.1 to 100 microns, it was desired to perform these experiments in the smallest capillaries possible, to ascertain whether capillary diameter had any effect on the existing theory based on data from larger capillaries.* It was also important to be able more systematically to vary the direction and rate of displacement than was done by previous investigators. Finally, to concentrate attention on viscous and capillary forces by eliminating gravity as a parameter, this study involves only horizontal capillaries. The work of Eley and Pepper' with a "large" (0.766-mm diameter) horizontal capillary is the previous investigation which is most similar to the present method of quantitative observation. Here capillaries with diameters as small as 4 microns will be studied.

"AbstractIn this paper a new type of durable 'spiral-rolled' drill set is introduced and its performance discussed. Efficient and economical mine drilling-depends to a great extent on durability of the drill-set employed. Premature failure of this element damages the drill bit and is costly when tungsten carbide bits are used.Time of drilling of 'spiral-rolled' drill sets introduced at present in Canada is considerably larger than for the presently used drill steel, but laboratory simulated service tests and practical field tests show that the 'drilling life' of the spiral-rolled drill set is several times that of ordinary drill steel.Some features of differential plastic deformation and differential surface rolling, so called 'spiral-rolling', are given.Relations between the drilling machine drill set and characteristics of the ore are discussed. The effect of shims on conical drill rod attachments, the mechanism of failure of drill steel, .and stresses during mine drilling, are analysed.IntroductionIN MINE DRILLING operations, the main interests are: the drilling machines as a source of working energy, the drill set as the tool transferring the working energy to the cutting edges of the bit, and, finally, the drilling characteristic of the .ore or waste rock.This paper includes a review of the possibilities of metallurgical and mechanical improvements in the drill set, with particular attention to drill steel and the attachments.For economical and efficient mine drilling operations, a durable drill rod, attachment, and drill bit are essential. TEST gravity surveys were made in the Washington County barite district of Missouri on properly owned by the Baroid Sales Division of the National Lead Co. This property is located just northeast of Richwoods in the northeastern corner of Washington County, Fig. 1. The area to which the surveys were confined comprised approximately 5000 acres, of which some 525 acres were surveyed gravitationally. Gravity observations were made at 2600 points within the area, observations being confined to relatively clear and gently sloping ground. Part of the area was heavily wooded, and the terrain too rugged for either the occurrence of a commercial barite deposit or a feasible gravity survey. The relief along the central drainage, Ditch Creek, was about 140 ft, the maximum difference in elevation being 400 ft in a distance of 3½ miles. The purpose of the test gravity survey was to determine whether the gravity method of geophysical prospecting might be applied in the exploration for barite deposits in the Washington County barite district, since a satisfactory systematic procedure had not been devised to explore and ultimately determine barite ore reserves with desired accuracy. No previous geophysical work with respect to barite is known to have been done in this area. Stratigraphy: The formations over which the barite deposits occur' are Paleozoic in age, representing rocks involving sandstones and dolomites unconformably underlain by pre-Cambrain granites and rhyolite porphyries. Systematic practices for protecting crops from frost damage began in the United Metes more then 40 years ago when the Weather Bureau Fruit-Frost Warning Service was organized; however, various practices employed in frost protection are centuries old. Although there are areas where little doubt exists as to whether protection is needed, there are also circumstances where there is some doubt as to the need for frost protection. Many factors influence this, including not only critical temperatures but also the maturity dates of the crops relative to marketing. Critical temperatures for frost damage to trees, plants, blossoms, and fruits very with weather, plant variety and nutrition, and stage of growth. In the case of truck crops, a single night of protection from frost injury might yield big dividends with a variety of sweet corn or tomato that matures early while price is high yet be worth very little with a midseason or late-maturing variety. Consequently, it is the individual grower who must decide whether to use frost-protective measures on the basis of his returns, the quantity and quality of his crop, the marketing situation, the sensitivity of his crops to frost damage, and the frequency of damaging frost in his area.

Dexter H. Reynolds (Chapman and Wood, Mining Engineers and Consulting Geologists, Albuquerque, N. M.)—A number of questions are raised by conclusions and inferences made in the above-mentioned paper. The more troublesome of these concern use of the various pozzolans to combat the deleterious effects of the alkali-aggregate reaction. The most alkali-reactive materials listed are opal and rocks containing opaline silica. The pozzolans mentioned specifically for use as amelioratives are opaline shales and cherts. These are stated to retard the expansion caused by the alkali-aggregate reaction. Another well-recognized pozzolan is diatomaceous earth, which consists principally of opaline silica. A pozzolan presumably owes its effectiveness to its high reactivity with the alkaline liquid phase of the concrete mix. It appears reasonable to expect that finely divided opaline silica added as a pozzolan would be more susceptible to reaction with the alkalies present than would larger particles of the same material. The authors report that work with high and low alkali cements indicates that in the presence of alkali-reactive materials, deleterious expansion depends upon the alkali content of the cement. The total effect, therefore, should be more or less independent of the amount of reactive aggregate present, and still more independent of its state of subdivision. The deleterious effects should, if anything, be aggravated by the addition of a finely divided, highly reactive pozzolan. Further, if the alkali-aggregate reaction is of great importance in the long-term soundness of concrete structures, the addition of a pozzolan to a concrete made with aggregate free from known deleterious materials would be a questionable procedure. The benefits reportedly accruing from such use of pozzolans are greater ultimate strength for a given cement content, increased resistance to deterioration by exposure to sulphate solutions and other mineral waters, and greater resistance to damage by wetting and drying and freezing and thawing. In view of the deleterious effects of highly reactive materials are these benefits ephemeral? The same considerations apply to another alkali-reactive material, chalcedony, which appears to consist of ultrafine-grained quartz, with opal absent in detectable amounts. Quartz flour is notably reactive chemically and physiologically (cf. Ref. 11 of Holland and Cook's paper), a fact borne out by its effectiveness as a pozzolan, which presumably might be expected to offset the deleterious effects of the presence of chalcedony in the aggregate. A second question of some importance concerns the reportedly highly deleterious reactivity of acidic and intermediate volcanic glasses, such as rhyolite, perlite, and pumice. Air entrainment is listed as one of the ameliorative measures to combat the deleterious effects of the alkali-aggregate reaction. The alkalic-silica gel formed by the reaction may expand into air bubbles and thus not cause appreciable expansion of the concrete mass. It would appear then that pumice and perlite, particularly perlites of the pumiceous types and other types after expansion, would also tend to counteract the expansion, since these materials consist largely of voids and air bubbles. Certainly this would be expected of structural concrete in which pumice or perlite is used as total aggregate. Finely ground pumice, perlite, and volcanic ash have been demonstrated to be active pozzolans (cf. Pumice as Aggregate for Lightweight Structural Concrete by Wagner, Gay, and Reynolds, Univ. of New Mexico Publications in Engineering No. 5, Albuquerque, 1950). In fact, the term pozzolan was first associated with finely divided pumice or volcanic ash. Such materials were used with hydrated lime as the sole cementitious agent in constructing public buildings, roads, and aqueducts by the ancient Romans. The deleterious alkali reactivity of the volcanic glass, itself containing several percent of the alkalies, apparently did not contribute to the remarkable state of preservation of those ancient structures, as exemplified by the Appian Way and the Pantheon Dome. Still a third question involves .the reactivity of constituents of concrete when exposed to various salt solutions. Resistance to. deleterious expansion and cracking as a result of contact with mineral waters and its relationship to the mineral content of the aggregate are not mentioned by the authors. Yet the phenomena pictured in Fig. 1, and especially in Fig. 2, appear very much like those caused by exposure to mineral waters. The deterioration of concretes exposed to sulphate waters is generally considered related to the chemical constituency of the cement itself, particularly to the relative amount of tricalcium alum-inate contained. Could not many of the ill effects presently blamed on alkali-aggregate reaction really have been caused by contact with sulphate or other salt-containing mineral waters? Or perhaps their use as mixing waters? May not the deleterious expansion be as much a function of the chemical makeup of the cement as it is of the mineral constituency of the aggregate? Would it not be just as important to use alkali-free mixing water as it is to use a low-alkali cement? It appears obvious that resistance of cements and concretes to sulphate and other salt solutions cannot be left out of account in discussion of deterioration of concrete structures with time. This factor may be of equal or even greater importance than the alkali-aggregate reaction, particularly for concrete subjected to wetting and drying cycles, such as airstrip paving, water-retaining dams, and highway structures. Another very important factor is called to attention on page 1022 of the article in Mining Engineering, October 1953, in that failure of concrete structures may result from poor construction practices and use of too high water-cement ratios. Both of these can contribute remarkably to decreased resistance to attack by sulphate waters, and presumably could have an equally remarkable effect upon extent of damage resulting from the alkali-aggregate reaction. From the above remarks it appears that while alkali-aggregate reaction may be an important factor in decreasing the useful. life of a concrete structure, it is not the only factor involved, and it may not be even a controlling factor. Likewise, many of the phenomena apparently associated with the alkali-aggregate reaction may have resulted from cond'itions which had little relationship to the alkali-reactivity of a constituent of the aggregate. Certainly if alkali-aggregate reactivity is a major factor in bringing about early failure, one cannot help feeling anxiety concerning the future of the many concrete structures in this country and abroad in which pumice and perlite were used as total or partial aggregates. This anxiety can only be dispelled by calling to mind that among the best-preserved relics coming down to us from ancient times are structures made with mortars containing highly alkali-reactive aggregates.
