"INTRODUCTION The Bureau of Mines Synthetic Liquid Fuels Program again forged ahead during 1952, and important technical advances led the way to improved methods of converting coal and oil shale into liquid fuels. Marking the eighth year of activities under this program, the pact 32 months brought a new domestic industry nearer realization.The increasing demand for gasoline and oil and the rising cost of finding new petroleum, coupled with America's growing dependence on imports and the unsettled international situation, have continued to emphasize the importance of the Bureau's Synthetic Liquid Fuels Program. Oil, the indispensable material of wartime, likewise has critical importance in peacetime, touching as it does the life of every individual. Supplementing petroleum with synthetic liquid fuels will not only conserve this Nation's petroleum reserves but also will bring into greater use its tremendous reserves of coal, as well as the vast deposits of oil shale for which no other practical use has yet been found.The Bureau of Mines Synthetic Liquid Fuels Program is one of the most important and far-reaching of the Government's research projects. Through development of commercial synthetic liquid fuels, the United States can obtain oil products from its great inland reserves of coal and oil shale to supplement petroleum in any quantity that may be necessary, consistent with economic and other requirements, such as national defense. The use of raw materials from such deposits would be of highest importance in wartime, when shipping lanes are menaced by the enemy. The Synthetic Liquid Fuels Program of the Bureau of Mines and research efforts of industry have advanced. American technology to the point where it is now possible to begin the design and construction of prototype plants. Certainly, significant improvements will be made as the program continues, but this prospect in no way alters the fact that the start of prototype plants should be encouraged. These plants, as the first step in the development of a synthetic fuels industry, would serve a threefold purpose:"

The Spraberry Trend Field of West Texas was discovered in January, 1949. Drilling of 2.234 wells and production of some 45 million bbl of oil by January, 1953, indicated this to be an important field which will ultimately cover more than 400,000 acres. In addition to being the world's largest field in areal extent, the Spraberry has presented many problems in well completion and operation and has demonstrated unique reservoir performance characteristics. The pay section consists primarily of a few fine grained sandstone or siltstone members in a thousand-ft thick section of shale, limestone. and siltstone. Since porosity averages only 10 per cent and nearly all permeabilities are less than 1 md, conventional core analysis does not delineate the "pay" section. Mercury injection was used as a capillary pressure test adaptable to rapid routine use to select those intervals having low enough connate water saturation to contain commercially significant oil saturation. In the central area of the field this "pay" amounts to 16 ft of Upper Spraberry and 15 ft of Lower Spraberry sands. An interconnected system of vertical fractures, observed in cores, provides the flow channels for oil to drain into the wells hut most of the oil is stored in the matrix since the void volume of fractures is estimated to be less than 1 per cent of that in the sand. Initial potentials of wells range up to 1.000 B/D after fracture treatment which should be compared with estimated capacity of 5 to 10 B/D if oil had to flow into the wells through the sand itself. Without exception initial pressures of later drilled wells were significantly lower than initial pressures of earlier drilled nearby wells in a large area some 6 miles long. This means the earlier drilled wells had drained fluids from areas much greater than their 40-acre proration units. Since most of this performance occurred while the reservoir pressure was above the. saturation pressure it was analyzed by the compressible fluid flow theory. This analysis gave calculated initial presrilres which agreed within 30 psi of measured pressures of 60 per cent of wells in the area using 16-md permeabilitv corresponding to a fracture system substantially that indicated by cores and using combined compressibility of rock and its contained oil and water corresponding to the core analysis data. The most important feature of this analysis was the very close agreement between effective compressibility of the rock and its contained oil and water from the field performance and that from the core tests, because it meant there are no "islands" of low permeability reservoir rock left untapped in the inter-well area and thus no additional wells are necessary to insure that at least one well penetrates each "reservoir." Twenty-five of forty-four 40-acre spaced wells on three contiguous sections were wed in a four-month inteference test. Six shut-in well. were tested monthly for oil production. productivity index. gas-oil ratio and pressure buildup, and seven shut-in wells were tested for decline in reservoir pressure. Tests on 12 regularly producing wells gave comparative data for interpretation of shut-in test wells. Reduction in reservoir pressure, decline in productivity index. and increase in gas-oil ratio were found to be substantially the same in the shut-in test wells as those in the comparative regularly producing wells, meaning that the producing wells were depleting the

ACCORDING to the traditional definition,1 re-x crystallization is a process taking place upon annealing of cold worked metals, characterized by the appearance of new strain-free grains, growing at the expense of the cold worked grains until ultimately the new crystals completely replace the cold worked structure. In metals like brass this process was observed long ago to take place simultaneously with the return of the mechanical properties to those characteristic of well annealed material. The above definition implicitly assumes that the matrix in which the new grains are growing is essentially still in the cold worked condition at the time it is absorbed by the new grains, i.e., that the energy stored in the metal during cold working is not greatly decreased by recovery, prior to recrystallization. Accordingly, the bulk of this energy is assumed to serve as the driving force for the process of recrystallization. Recently, a great deal of evidence accumulated, indicating that the traditional concept may be considerably in error. Suzuki' found that by far the largest portion of the stored energy of cold work in compressed polycrystalline copper is released in the early stages of annealing, well in advance of recrystallization. Thus, the new recrystallized grains are undoubtedly growing in a matrix which is, at least energetically, no longer in the cold worked condition, but has nearly returned to the annealed state. It is true that in Suzuki's experiments the major hardness changes due to annealing were observed to take place concurrently with the formation and growth of the new grains, but this process apparently involved the release of only a minor residual fraction of the stored energy of cold work. Confirming in this respect the views of Wood," several recent investigations by various techniques lead to the conclusion that the grains of many, if not all, metals in the cold worked condition consist of small, slightly disoriented "crystallites" or "sub-grains".* (After appreciable deformation at room temperature, the subgrain size in copper appears to be about 7.104 cm and in high purity aluminum about 2.10-4 cm.) Recent investigations which demonstrated this phenomenon most convincingly are those of Heidenreich8 with hammered high purity aluminum, of P. B. Hirsch and collaborators7,8 with cold worked polycrystalline aluminum, copper, nickel, iron, gold, etc., and of Warren and Averbach9 with a rolled copper plus 2 pct Si single crystal. In addition to the existence of slightly disoriented sub-grains, the cumulative evidence from these investigations also shows that in the cold worked condition the subgrains themselves are severely strained. With regard to the early stages of annealing, Heiden-reich's results indicate that within the subarains of hammered high purity aluminum the strain gradually disappears, without discernible migration of the subboundaries. This recovery process presumably accounts for the major portion of the energy release

THERE has been a running discussion over the-past several years with respect to the life and adequacy of our natural gas reserves.. Some of the experts agree on one phase of the subject at least--that eventually it will be necessary to augment deliveries of natural gas in the northern markets by the development of a more or less comparable synthetic gas made from coal. The purpose of this paper is to point out: 1. It may be later than a good many people think-the demand for additional domestic and commercial pipeline gas in at least one section of the North will probably be felt rather keenly before an adequate synthetic pipeline-gas project, developed on economic lines, could be completed, even if ' initiated in the near future. 2. The evidence is considerable that such a project would be technically sound and economically self-supporting, although the margin of profit at first might be so small and the magnitude of an economic enterprise so great that financing would be impossible without Government aid in some form or other. The part of the country referred to is the heavily populated section in the northeast of the United States. To simplify an examination of the situation, let us take the potential marketing areas within range to the north and east of the three pipelines: 1. Tennessee Gas Transmission Co. as it enters Erie County, New York state. 2. Texas Eastern Transmission Corporation just before the tap that supplies the general Philadelphia area. 3. Transcontinental G& Pipe Line Corporation as it enters the state of New Jersey The sources of gas for these three pipelines are in Texas and Louisiana. The ultimate maximum combined capacity of the three lines at the points stated is approximately 1,200,000,000 cu ft per 24 hr at the maximum load factor probable of attainment in normal operation. The areas supplied by the three lines north and east of the points stated, or assumed as eventual markets, are: 1. Central New York state, from Buffalo to Albany (both inclusive).

This report presents experimental work conducted on a number of coals found within the boundaries of the Missouri River Basin, which were, to an extent, a selection of coals typical of that region. In the min, the laboratory work falls into three general classifications: (1) Laboratory distillation assay of coal to establish yields on carbonization; (2) chemical analyses of the coal samples before drying or carbonization; and (3) chemical analyses of the products of carbonization. It will be seen in the following discussion that these data derived from the small-scale laboratory apparatus are useful in predicting yields from pilot plants or industrial units. Coal is produced in about 48 general areas or mining fields in the Western States, of which approximately 18 fall within the limits of the Missouri Basin.3/ Beginning with the Northern Colorado field, through the Central and Western Wyoming fields, the coal is principally bituminous and subbituminous rank. The western Montana coals are also of these ranks. Progressing northeast from central Wyoming the coal decreases in rank, as shown by the subbituminous C coals of the Gillette field in northern Wyoming and the lignites of eastern Montana and North Dakota.

THIS REPORT gives results of an investigation of the carbonizing properties of two Tennessee coals, one from the Jellico bed in Campbell County and the other from the Sewanee bed in Marion County. Jellico coal and blends with 20 and 30 percent Pocahontas No. 3 coal were carbonized at 800° and 900° C. by the BM-AGA method. Sewanee coal was carbonized by the same method at 800°, 900°, and 1,000° C.; blends with coals of similar and different ranks were carbonized at 800° and 900° C. The coals were subjected to various physical and chemical tests, including complete chemical analyses, low-temperature assays, and agglutinating, free-swelling, friability, plasticity, and expansion tests. The Tennessee coal field is a part of the Appalachian field, which extends from northern Pennsylvania to central Alabama. The Jelico bed, one of the most important in the State, is part of the Jellico formation, which is above the Lee formation of the Lower Pottsville. Sewanee coal bed belongs to the Sewanee conglomerate and is stratigraphically lower than the Jellico bed.

The conditions under which the researches of the Bureau of Mines on petroleum and natural gas were conducted in 1952 were little changed from those indicated in the last report,2/ which dealt with activities during 1951, immediately after crossing of the 38th Parallel by the North Korean Army. Although only a small part of the program was classified in the military sense, there was a feeling of the clash of world forces which called for even cheer scrutiny of the research problems so that the emphasis could be placed without delay where the greatest needs for na¬tional defense seemed to be. The reports of the work accomplished were so directed as to have the greatest immediate value to persons charged with supply planning for the military forces and included information on the availability and characteristics of a wide variety of crude oils, fuels, and other petroleum products. Actually, the approach, direction, and conduct of the work do not differ greatly under the two circumstances, as has been pointed out in earlier reports; only the tempo changes.

"SINCE the .Canadian Chemical Company has no direct connection with mining operations, and I have had no experience with mining, there is little I can tell you that you do not already know. However, we have had considerable experience with certain types of metallurgical problems and I would like to discuss with you some of these problems and their solutions by our metallurgists.In order to acquaint you with the type of plant and processes to be employed at Edmonton, I would like first to take a few .minutes to trace briefly the history -of the Canadian Chemical Company's affiliate, The Celanese Corporation of America. In the early •part of the twentieth century, two young Swiss brothers, Camille and Henri Dreyfus, received their P.h.D. degrees in chemistry. They were extremely interested in work which was being carried on at that time to find a suitable synthetic fiber that could compete with natural fibers, both quality and price-wise. Early man-made fibers were both coarse and hard to dye. The Doctors Dreyfus• poured all their earnings into research and ultimately developed cellulose acetate filament. During World War I, the Dreyfus brothers were invited to the United States to produce cellulose acetate 'dope' for airplane wing coverings. Dr. Camille Dreyfus built the first American plant for fiber production at Cumberland, Maryland, in 1924.Due to resistance of textile mills to the new fibers, Celanese was forced to set up its own dying, weaving, and finishing mills to prove the new materials. Through the years, however, this operation has •been retained primarily for fabric development purposes,.. with the majority of the acetate being sold to other textile mills."

The Brewer mine, near Jefferson, Chesterfield County, S. C., was originally operated as a gold mine. As late as 1890 this mine was reported to have been one of the large gold producers in the southeast. Occurrence of topaz on the Brewer property was not reported until 1935, when it was discovered, by Parks3/ and Parks of the Federal Geological Survey while they were investigating gold deposits in the Piedmont province.

This report is the first substantial description of the carbonizing process and the details of experimental work conducted at the Denver laboratories under a coopeative agreement between the Bureau of Mines and the Texas Power & Light Co. It presents the results of tests on several Texas lignites and other typical western coals that have been processed in the first pilot plant operated at Denver. Investigations on drying fine coal in the entrained and fluidized state have been under way at Bureau of Mines Denver laboratories for several years. Reports on this work were published in 1949 and 19505/ describing the theory and practice of re-moving inherent moisture from the lower -rank coals. The investigation did not include a study of the removal of surface moisture from fine fuel. Private industry in Canada became interested in the possibilities of drying fine coal, employing the closed-circuit system and techniques recommended by the Bureau. Large, commercial-scale drying units were built by a Canadian company, which successfully demonstrated that surface moisture could be removed from fine coal at high efficiency and capacity ill drying units similar in design to those developed by the Bureau.

THIS PAPER gives results of an investigation of the composition and carbonizing properties of coals from the Beckley bed, Caretta No. 5 mine, Susanna, McDowell County, and Glen Rogers No. 2 mine, Glen Rogers, Wyoming County, W. Va. The investigation included BM-AGA carbonization tests at. 800° and 900° C. and various chemical and physical tests designed to evaluate agglutinating, plastic, and expanding properties of coal. Both coals were of low-volatile bituminous rank, and each was blended with 70 and 80 percent high-volatile A coal from the Pittsburgh bed, Warden mine, Allegheny County, Pa. The Beckley bed was 39 to 58 inches thick at three points in the Caretta No. 5 mine, and the coal was 39 to 49 inches thick. The carbonizing sample contained 83.0 percent fixed carbon on the dry, mineral-matter-free basis. It contained 3.1 percent moisture, 15.8 percent volatile matter, 72.4 percent fixed carbon, 0.7 percent sulfur, and 8.7 percent ash, as carbonized. The ash softened at 2,680° F. The free-swelling index was 7;i, and the agglutinating value was 7.7. This sample fused weakly in the Gieseler plastometer; its blends with 70 and 80 percent Pittsburgh coal attained maximum fluidities of 830 and 600 dial divisions per minute, respectively. The single coal yielded 83.0 percent coke at 900° C. Yields of other carbonization products per ton of coal at 900° C. were: Gas, 9,950 cubic feet; tar, 3.5 gallons; light oil, 1.36 gallons; and ammonium sulfate, 16.3 pounds. Blending with Pittsburgh coal lowered the yield of coke and raised the yields of other products significantly. Caretta coal yielded strong, blocky coke at 900° C., 89 percent of which was plus-2-inch size. Strength indexes of 900° C. coke from 30:70 blends of Caretta No. 5 and Pittsburgh and of Pocahontas No. 3 and Pittsburgh coals were, respectively: 2-inch shatter, 68 and 53; 1%-inch shatter, 90 and 85; 1-inch tumbler, 50 and 53; and %-inch tumbler, 62 and 65. The specific gravity of the 900° C. gas from Caretta No. 5 coal was 0.272, and the heating values were 491 B. t. u. per cubic foot and 2,440 B. t. u. per pound of coal. The blends yielded much richer gas. Yields of tar acids and bases (0.09 and 0.04 gallon per ton, respectively) were within the normal ranges for low-volatile coals. Caretta No. 5 coal expanded 7.5 percent in the sole-heated oven at a charge density of 55.5 pounds per cubic foot. The blends containing 70 and 80 percent Pittsburgh coal contracted 4.8 and 7.5 percent, respectively.

Disasters such as occurred at Oppau, Germany, in 1921, at Tessenderloo, Belgium, in 1942, and in this country at Texas City, Tex., in 1947 clearly indicate the explosive hazard associated with the manufacture, storage, and transport at ion of ammonium nit rate The importance and extent of the hazard may be Judged from the large amount of ammonium nitrate produced and transported annually in this country. Between July 1, 1947, and June 30, 1948, it was estimated that the United States produced 461,528 tons of ammonium nitrate commercially for agricultural purposes alone .5/ In addition, U. S. Army Ordnance plants have manufactured and shipped 779,730 tons of ammonium nitrate fertilizer to Germany, Japan, and Korea.6/

This progress report summarizes operating results on the gasification of natural lignite from five runs of the commercial-scale pilot plant at Grand Forks, N. Dak., during December 1946 and calendar years 1947 and 1948, when the plant was operated for 1,996 hours. A primary specific objective was to determine the useful life of the outer metal retort tube as it is influenced by corrosion and other factors under a wide range of operating conditions. A secondary objective was to develop the technology of production when generating gas with a high ratio of hydrogen to carbon monoxide in both the divided and continuous annuli. Results are summarized in graphs and tables that show hydrogen-carbon monoxide ratios from 2.3 to 9 at gas-production rates from 6 to 12 M cu. St. per hr. (thousand cubic feet per hour), or approximately 30 to 60 cu, ft. per square foot of heated retort-wall surface per hour. Gas yields ranged from 36 to 54 M cu, ft. per ton of natural lignite or 63 to 91 M cu. ft. per ton of moisture- and ash-free lignite, Production rates were higher in the divided annulus, but these represent the maximum capacity of the plant only at high hydrogen-carbon monoxide ratios when the high concentration of excess steam and low furnace temperature limit gas production. A ratio of 6 was the highest produced in the continuous annulus because mechanical Limitations of the auxiliary equipment prevented attainment of higher ratios. The lignite feed rate appears to influence the production rate more than any other individual operating variable. Heat balances for four periods when gas with ratios from 2.3 to 7.2 was produced with a lignite feed rate of about 325 pounds per hour suggest that the potential heat in the gas is lower at higher ratios, owing to increased heat losses in the excess steam. Heat-transfer rates through the retort tube in these four tests were between 1,500 and 3,000 B.t.u. per square foot per hour. These rates are much lower than those reached in many earlier tests, but no attempt was made to achieve maximum rates of heat transfer.

THE terms surface tension and surface energy are well known when applied to liquids and are generally described by referring to the excess energy of the air: liquid interface as a result of unsaturated molecular forces surrounding the surface molecules of the liquid due to the presence of the air phase on one side. Such unbalanced forces produce the familiar water droplet of spherical form and are generally summed up as a surface tension measured in dynes per centimeter which can be shown mathematically to be equal numerically to a corresponding surface energy expressed in ergs per square centimeter. A specific surface energy, however, is best thought of as the energy necessary to produce one unit, of new surface on a substance. Hence, in producing a bubble in a flotation cell the impeller must supply surface energy corresponding to the air: liquid interfacial area on the interior of the bubble. Inasmuch as it is relatively easy to extend or contract the surface of a liquid, there are a number of successful methods for liquid surface tension, or energy, measurement based upon surface deformation. This happy state of affairs does not, however, extend to solids, which are considered to possess surface energies for the same reasons as do liquids, i.e. because of unsaturated ionic bonds at the solid: gas interface. As in the case of the flotation cell producing surface on liquids as new bubbles, it takes energy to produce new surface on solids as new particles. As every mill man knows, this surface is produced on mineral solids in a grinding mill by the action of a tumbling mass of iron balls. But here so much energy usually is wasted by the inefficient action of these balls that a large amount of heat is generated, and the surface energy production may be easily confused with the energy necessary to produce this ineffective heat. The tumbling balls and fracturing minerals ultimately take their energy from a rather large electric motor. It has been variously estimated that from 10 to 20 pct'" only of this energy from the motor does not appear as heat and may be presumed to appear as surface energy on the min- erals present. Such a production of new surface on the mineral phases is accompanied, of course, by a size reduction that is inevitable as more and more mineral interior molecules become surface molecules by the fracture exposure. This size reduction of mineral particles, although the most obvious feature and perhaps the sole object of the milling operation, is from this energy viewpoint the outward manifestation of the production of surface energy only. Measurement of the characteristic surface energies of pure minerals and their various mixtures in ores would be a step towards understanding of the energetics of the commercial grinding operation. In addition, the characteristic surface energy of a mineral is probably a physical property specific for that mineral, and therefore, from a scientific standpoint, should be measured. It is interesting to note that, in contrast to the large body of work on the surface tensions of liquid systems and biological systems, the field of solid surface energies has been neglected. Prior to 1920 it is difficult to find more than one or two references to work on solid surface energies in Chemical Abstracts. Since 1920 such references number somewhat less than 100, while those on liquid systems are numbered in the thousands. Much of this apparent neglect of the field of solid surface energies (the term is intended to be somewhat inclusive at this point and refers both to the solid: gas, and the solid:liquid interface) is because of the lack of a reliable method of measurement rather than any lack of scientific curiosity. It was, and still is, difficult to produce new surface on a solid without the simultaneous production of interior changes in the same solid which may consume part of the energy used. A LOW-TEMPERATURE carbonization assay test is described, and factual data derived from this test are presented. The test procedure outlined in this report incorporates a mild-steel retort of improved design, an accurately controlled method of heating, and a complete collection and condensation system for the solid, liquid, and gaseous products of carbonization. The test described establishes, under closely controlled conditions, the relationship of temperature to yields of products on carbonization. Noncoking or weakly coking coals and other carbonaceous material are particularly amenable to testing by the assay. Mass balances of 100 percent± 0.3 are obtainable by this test. It is believed that the efficiency of the test and the accuracy of the type data obtained have been materially increased.

SEVERAL years ago Zener and Hollomon1 suggested that the flow stress of metals might be related to the temperature and strain rate in accord with the functional equation: s=s(eeh/rt) [1] at the same state. The Zener-Hollomon relation also contains the significant tacit implication that the energy for activation, AH, is substantially independent of the state of the material. The utility of this method for correlating creep data with tensile data was illustrated in a preliminary reportL on the effect of alloying additions on the secondary creep rates of binary a solid solutions in aluminum as shown for Al-Mg alloys in Fig. 1. Not only do the secondary creep and ultimate tensile properties for each alloy correlate well on this plot but in addition the activation energy, AH = 17,900 R cal per mol. is identical for the various compositions. Similar types of curves correlating the secondary creep rates at 422°K (300°F) with ultimate tensile data were also obtained for a series of dilute a solid solutions of copper, germanium, zinc, and silver in aluminum. In all cases the activation energy for creep, AH, was found to be equal to about 17,900 R cal per mol independent of the type of alloying element or its concentration. The coincidence of the activation energies for these alloys is probably due to the fact that the activation energies for creep are rather insensitive to small composition changes. Alloying additions, as shown in Fig. 1, however, increased the stress necessary to obtain equivalent values of ee?H/RT. Thus the stress level in curves of the type represented by Fig. 1 gives the relative creep strengths of the various alloys. Inasmuch as these correlations between creep and tensile data were obtained for creep tests at 422°K, it appeared advisable to ascertain the range of secondary creep rates and temperatures over which correlations between creep and tensile data could be made on the basis of the Zener-Hollomon relationship. If, for example, the activation energy changes with different ranges of creep temperatures, the utility of the proposed analysis would be severely weakened. But if AH is constant not only for all dilute alloys, but also over wide ranges of temperature and secondary creep rates, confidence will be developed not only in the broad utility of the Zener- Table I. The following investigation was instituted in order to ascertain the range of validity of the Zener-Hollomon relationship when it is applied to creep and tension data. Materials, Equipment, Technique In view of rather extensive correlatable data now available on the plastic properties of a series of binary a solid solutions of magnesium, copper, germanium, zinc, and silver in aluminum, these alloys were again selected for the present investigation. Previous reports have already covered the tensile properties of these alloys at subatmospheric temperatures," and at elevated temperature," as well as their fatigue properties at atmospheric temperatures, nd their creep properties at 422°K.' Resistivity measurementsa as well as precision lattice constant determinations? evealed that these alloys are a solid solutions. After homogenization. 0.100 in. thick sheets were rolled to 0.070 in. in thickness and recrystallized to about the same grain size. Since the details of these treatments were reported previously," they will not be repeated here. In order to appropriately reduce the scope of creep tests in this investigation only the typical alloys shown in Table I were investigated. All creep specimens were machined such that their tensile axes were in the rolling direction of the 0.070 in. sheet stock. The gage section was 2 in. long and 0.500 in. wide with a reduced section of 3.50 in. THE MAGNITUDE of the anthracite industry's drainage problem in the Northern field of Pennsylvania is realized when it is known that, for the 8-year period 1944-51, all pumping plants in this region pumped an average volume of 112.5 billion gallons of water from the mines to the surface each year. This is over 214,000 gallons per minute pumped against an average hydrostatic head of 400 feet each year for that period (12).4 By comparison, Lake Wallenpaupack, the largest artificial body of water lying wholly in Pennsylvania, contains 71 billion gallons of water in its 24-square-mile area; the average volume of water pumped from the mines in the Northern field each year during the 8-year period was 58 percent more than the volume impounded in Lake Wallenpaupack. The natural configuration of the drainage area overlying the Northern field subdivides the total area into two major drainage areas-the Lackawanna River drainage area and the Susquehanna River drainage area overlying the Wyoming Basin. Although the 169-square-mile drainage area overlying the Wyoming Basin is slightly less than half that of the Lackawanna River drainage area (10), the total volume of water pumped to the surface from mines in the Wyoming Basin is 21 percent more than the total volume pumped to the surface from mines in the Lackawanna Basin. From this, it is apparent that the Susquehanna River and the pervious deposits in the buried valley over which it flows in its course across the coal measures of Wyoming Valley is the greatest single source of mine water affecting mines in this area. Because of its relatively flat terrain, the wide flood plain of Wyoming Valley does not facilitate rapid runoff; consequently, much of the surface water seeps directly into the buried-valley deposits and eventually into the mine workings.

Very encouraging progress has been made ill the develop-ment of the permanent-type well completion which decreases considerable the cost of completions and workovers and aid-in the acquisition of reliable reservoir information at low cost. Completion and remedial operations are performed with tool,; which pass through the well tubing. Perforating and plug-hack operations can be done with the tubing in place and do not require pipe-handling equipment. Because of the many advantages afforded by this method, development work is going forward in anticipation of ultimately being able 10 use it to perform all usual well completion and workover operations. Effort is also being directed to the development of a more permanent type of lift equipment suitable for use with the permanent-type well completion. INTRODUCTION The permanent-type well completion in one in which the tubing and well-head are set in place only once in the life of the well and the completion or remedial work is performed through the tubing with a tubing-type perforator. a retrievable tubing extension. and other wire-line tools. This new type completion has made possible the saving of one to two days' rig time in the completion of each of several hundred wells During the last two years, and use of equipment developed for this type of completion has resulted in a 75 per cent reduction in cost. of certain types of workovers. In addition. the more reliable indication of the commercial value of a reservoir and the more accurate general reservoir information made Possible promise to be of even greater value in oil recovery than the reduction of costs for completions and workovers Recently. several well.. were worked over by using the retrievable tubing extension suspended on a swab line to plug back with cement and then perforating a higher producing interval with the tubing-type perforator, thus opening the way for complete through-the-tubing workovers which may be performed without pipe-handling equipment or mud. Those items attendant to the use of pipe-handling equipment and mud. such as hoard matting rig substructure. and pits. were also eliminated. There are indications that the elimination of drilling mud during completion and workover operations will frequently give increased well productivity, as plugging of the perforation. will not occur. It ii now possible to perforate selectively small sections of the producing interval and to test a well through these sections prior to perforating more interval. The perforating of additional interval will not entail the costly operations of killing the well and pulling tubing, nor will the old or the new perforations be plugged. The productivity of .mall sections of a reservoir and the actual gas-oil or oil-water contacts may now be determined economically under flowing condition.. Selective completions can be made in this manner to delay gas and water problems and bring about maximum oil recovery. At the present time, gas lift appears to offer the greatest potentialities for artificial lift in the permanent-type well com"letion since it can provide full-open tubing to accommodate the through-the-tubing tools and it may be ultimately developed into a fairly permanent type of lift. With precent-day pas-lift equipment. valve or mandrel failure necessitates occacio11al removal of the tubing. thereby reducing to some extent the permanence of the completion. "Demonstrations of Automatic Coal Burning EquipmentAT THE 1951 and 1952 Annual Coal Research Conferences sponsored by the Dominion Coal Board and attended by delegates from the Dominion and Provincial governments as well as industry, the importance ,of encouraging the co-operative interest of Canadian coal and equipment industries in •promoting the use of equipment types best suited to burn given Canadian coals was emphasized. It. was suggested that this idea •be enlarged upon at forthcoming C.I.M. meetings that would be .attended largely by coal mining engineers.With this in view, a Domestic Heating Forum (1) was featured in the Coal Division programme at the 1951 Annual Western Meeting of the Institute in Calgary, and a much more ambitious programme, highlighted by live demonstrations, was •staged at the combined Annual Western Meeting and Fourth Meeting of District 4 held in Winnipeg in October 1952.With the excellent co-operation of a number of equipment manufacturers and coal companies, and with facilities kindly provided •by the University •of Manitoba authorities, burning demonstrations were• arranged in the Agricultural Engineering Building, on October l 7th. These demonstrations were a fitting sequel to the Coal Division sessions held in the Royal Alexandra Hotel on October 16th, at which the combustion of coal was specially featured in a series of papers by prominent Canadian and United States specialists.The primary purpose of the demonstrations was to •show that all coal, regardless •of rank, can be satisfactorily used provided that proper application is made with equipment suited to its purpose."

THE MAGNITUDE of the drainage problem of the anthracite industry in Pennsylvania's Western Middle field is realized when it is known that in 1951 nine pumping plants in this field pumped nearly 36 billion gallons of water to the surface. This is almost 68,000 gallons per minute pumped against an average hydrostatic head of 350 feet for that year alone. In 1948 over 20,000 gallons per minute was pumped by relay pumps against an average hydrostatic head of 265 feet. In addition to the water pumped to the surface, it is estimated that 15,000 gallons per minute overflows to the surface from underground pools in idle mines. The volume (second-feet) of water pumped and overflow water is almost 1;z times the, average mean flow of the Schuylkill River at Pottsville for the 8-year period 1944--51 (7, 13).4 Mahanov and Shamokin Creeks drain an area of 99 square miles in the Western Middle field, and all surface drainage in this area must traverse some part, of the coal measures before entering these streams. On the basis of 46.03 inches of rainfall (the weighted average of 6 recording stations for 1948), the runoff from the drainage area during that period was 51 billion gallons, approximately 1 times the volume of water pumped by all mine-pumping plants in the Western Middle field. In other words, because of the pervious strata overlying the mine workings, approximately two-thirds of the total runoff in the drainage, area becomes mine water tributary to the pumping plants.
