Laboratory investigations have produced flotation concentrates contain- ing 91 to more than 92 percent titania, with fair recoveries, from the Christy property, Hot Spring County, Ark. The titanium-bearing ore on the Christy property occurs in a quartz-clay- iron oxide mineralization, which contains, on the average, about 6.0 percent TiO2, chiefly as the mineral brockite; brookite and rutile are different crys- talline forms of titanium dioxide. Recent work by the Bureau of Mines has shown that titanium chloride can be produced readily from the rutile-type mineral by reduction with coke fol- lowed by low-temperature chlorination. Metallic titanium is in turn derived etallic from the chloride by the Kroll process .

THIS-report gives results of in investigation of the carbonizing properties of 18 coals, including 2 from Alaska, 12 from British Columbia, 3 from Washington, and 1 from Utah. Each coal was carbonized in the standard 13-inch Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association (BM-AGA) retort at 900° C. Plastic properties were determined by the Gieseler and Davis methods, and agglutinating and free-swelling properties were determined by standard methods. Expanding properties were measured in the Bureau of Mines sole-heated oven. From the results of the tests on these single coals, three coals from the Crowsnest area in British Columbia, representing Elk River Nos. 4, 9, and 10, were selected for blending with the Utah coal, which was from the Lower Sunnyside bed, Horse Canyon mine, Emery County. Lower Sunnyside also was blended with Wilkeson -Nos. 2 and 3 (Washington) coals, Pocahontas No. 3 from McDowell County, W. Va., and the Oklahoma low-volatile coal used in the blend carbonized at, the Provo, (Utah) coke plant at the time this investigation was started. Most of the blends contained 3 percent hard pitch, which is the proportion used at the Provo plant. The blends were also carbonized in 13-inch BM AGA retorts at 900° C. High-volatile B coal from the No. 3 bed, Evan-Jones mine, Lower Matanuska, Valley, Alaska, yielded poorly fused coke or char. M-bed coal from the Chickaloon mine, Upper Matanuska. Valley, Alaska, ranked as medium-volatile bituminous and coked strongly. It expanded 39.6 percent in the sole-heated oven at a. charge density of 55.5 pounds per cubic foot..

The peacetime activities of the Bureau's petroleum and natural-gas program have been reoriented to serve the needs of a national-defense program. When the United Nations sent troops to Korea after the North Korean Army crossed the 38th parallel in the latter part of June 1950, the Bureau's coordinated national program on petroleum and natural gas, with each major project forming an essential member of its framework, was carefully reviewed by those in charge of the work. As a matter of fact, the era of normalcy in which the petroleum and natural-gas research of the Bureau of Mines prospered during the fiscal year 19502/ was no sedative to the need for alertness on a national-defense front. The program, although conducted along peacetime lines in general, was scanned critically and repeatedly during that period to see where - if the need should arise -the emphasis could be shifted from peace to defense or war. Judging from the experience of two wars, it would not be long before the Bureau would be asked to use its trained technical personnel in applying techniques already learned in peacetime research to the requirements of munition and fuel needs of national defense. Near the end of January 1951, petroleum and natural-gas engineers of the Bureau of Mines began a comprehensive study of reservoir conditions in the Canyon Reef fields of Scurry, Borden, and Kent Counties, Tex. This work was preceded by published analyses of crude oils from Scurry County as early as April 1950. Well-informed persons in industry have estimated that these fields hold reserves that will yield 3 to 6 billion barrels of stock-tank oil. Although generally accepted good operating practices have been followed, engineering tests have shown that the natural energy, except in some favorable parts of the reservoir, will not be adequate for obtaining a high percentage of recovery. Correct information regarding the extent and availability of this vast reservoir of hydrocarbons is therefore of great concern to the Petroleum Administration for Defense in carrying out its responsibilities under the Defense Production Act.

"IntroductionGENERALLY, the necessity for mining coals of higher impurity content, the drive for lower costs by intensive mine mechanization, changing market requirements, and the increasing competition of oil and natural gas, have continued to result in an upward rise in coal preparation, and have necessitated a more intensive study of coal preparation problems.Increasing adoption of •continuous mining equipment, for example, is introducing new problems in coal preparation. Limited experimental work in the United States (1) shows that the effect of the continuous miner on size distribution varies with the characteristics of the seam. In some seams, the fines problem is lessened, in others it is greatly aggravated. Generally there is a decrease in the relative amount of the top sizes (plus 2 in.) and a substantial increase in the intermediate sizes (down to about 1/8 in.). Contrary to expected results•, where continuous miners with vertical-moving cutting heads are used, an increase in impurities in the slack sizes does not necessarily occur where draw-slate is taken. This is because the draw-slate tends to be kicked out in lump form. However, if a seam contains bands •and lenses of impurities they are bound to be in the mined product."

Use of two-way radio communication at the Santa Rita open pit of the Kennecott Copper Corp. has furnished a satisfactory answer to the problem of communications for an operation covering an extended area. Coordination of operations has resulted, with little loss of time in making changes during the shift. Repairs are facilitated, and safety of operations is increased through better control of blasting and hazardous conditions. INTRODUCTION Expansion of mining operations brings increasing needs of improved communications to coordinate the mechanized operations that contribute to the efficiency of present-day open-pit methods. Equipment found satisfactory when first installed becomes inadequate as distances and demands increase. It is the, purpose of this paper to record the progress being made by one mine in meeting this problem.

Data obtained from on-the-site observations have been compiled to describe the equipment and installation methods used for satisfactory suspension roof support in a large-diameter tunnel. Experimental roof bolting was undertaken from June 1950 until May 8, 1951, in the East Delaware tunnel, which is part of the Delaware aqueduct in Delaware and Sullivan Counties, N. Y. Revised suspension-roof-support plans and specifications were prepared during the spring of 1951 by the City of New York Board of Water Supply; these were approved by the State of New York Department of Labor April 13, 1951, and adopted by the City of New York Board of Water Supply on May 8, 1951.

Introduction This paper will describe the mining plant and underground operations at Quemont. Details of geology and milling are beyond its scope. Papers on these subjects will be prepared and presented separately. A detailed account of the exploration and development, 1944 to 1947, has been given by W. L. Brown (1). Location The mining concessions of Quemont Mining Corporation, Limited, are in Rouyn township, Rouyn-Noranda county, northwestern Quebec. These concessions total about 640 acres in area. They lie within the limits of the City of Noranda, contiguous to, and directly north of, the Horne mine of Noranda Mines, Limited. A large area in the southern part of the property is covered by the north arm of Osisko lake. Production The present operating rate is about 2,100 tons per day. Three flotation concentrates are produced: copper, containing a large proportion of the gold and silver in the ore; zinc; and pyrite, which carries an appreciable additional proportion of gold. The copper and zinc concentrates are shipped to smelters as produced. The pyrite concentrate is cyanided to recover additional gold, after which it is filtered, dried, and shipped for the manufacture of sulphuric acid. The principal revenue metals are copper, gold, and zinc. Silver and pyrite are important by-products.

This DaoerAA calls to attention for the first time, to the writer's knowledge, a purported recovery of oil by substantially horizontal gas cycling that is considerably in excess of 50 per cent of the oil originally in place. The average angle of dip along the path of travel of the gas is less than one degree of arc. The best recovery by gas cycling previously brought to the writer's attention1 occurred in the case of the Mile Six Field in Peru, where about 68 per cent of the original oil in place has so far been recovered. In this case, however. the recovery was greatly aided 1)y the high dip angle of about 17.5". An approximate estimate of recovery was made by the method developed by the writer' for the case of the Cook Ranch Field, using an average relative permeability ratio function dictated by past experience with a number of good quality sandstones. A result of about 40 per cent recovery of the original oil in place wa* obtained after the 8.5 pore volumes of cumulative gas cycling undergone by the Cook Ranch Field. Tile writer desires to emphasize what appears to him as the sound engineering practiced at Cook Ranch, and also the care attending the taking of data and the high quality of the calculations made. It is impossible to take issue on factual grounds with any of the conclusions drawn in the paper. It is, however, desired to point out the difficulty of explaining the unexpectedly favorable oil recovery on ordinary theoretical grounds. It would be of interest to know whether relative permeability ratios have been measured on the Cook sand. The operator is inclined to attribute some of the excess benefit to settling of the oil across the bedding planes into the lower part of the sand. It is difficult for the writer to appreciate the importance of such an effect, inasmuch as the concomitant opening of excessive vacated pore space in the upper part of the sand would he expected to cause excessive bypassing of the gas. WELGE Welge has poined out clearly the difficulty of applying material-balance procedures in calculating the Performance of low-pressure, dispersed gas injection operations. There can be no argument that even with the most favorable assumptions of K,/K,, and with cumulative gas cycling in excess of normal expectations, the calculated oil recovery will be considerably less than the 72.5 per cent recovery realized from this project to Jan. 1, 1951. There probably are at least two reasons for the unusually high recovery from this reservoir, the effects of which would be difficult or impossible to calculate by known methods: 1. The operator did not use the same injection wells for the entire operation, and exercised considerable control over producing GOR by changing the locations of injection wells whenever well performance indicated excessive bypassing. Fifty-six wells were used for injection, not over 29 of which were in use simultaneously. This procedure resulted in frequent shifting of the fluid movement patterns in the reservoir and undoubtedly increased the ultimate recovery. The writer knows of no satisfactory procedure for calculating the effect of this practice. 2. Vertical movement of oil across the bedding planes of the reservoir rock hy gravity drainage tended to maintain a relatively high oil saturation, and hence a favorable K,/K, ratio, in the lower sections of the reservoir. As pointed out by Welge, this condition has aggravated the tendency for high producing GOR, but at the same time it has resulted in increased oil recovery. As may be seen from the performance charts for the various battery areas, operating (GOR'S have been quite high for the last several years of reported history.

"IntroductionTHE PINCHER CREEK gas condensate field, in Township 3, Range 28, and Townships 3 and 4, Range 29, West of the Fourth Meridian, was discovered in 1947 by the Canadian Gulf Oil Company with the completion of Pincher Creek No. 1 well in the Madison lime-stone of Mississippian age.This discovery was the result of a great deal of detailed seismic work in the area and is a credit to the geophysical personnel of the Company. The depth of the reservoir varies from 7,400 feet to 8,200 feet subsea, with the established water level at -8,200 feet. The predicted depth was but a scant 100 feet from that found in the discovery well, at 11, 705 feet. Since the discovery of the reservoir, three additional wells have penetrated the Madison limestone and have further verified the original •seismic interpretation of the limits of this reservoir.To date, •only a very small amount of gas has been produced from this field. Consequently, the reservoir studies that have been made so far are predominantly based on investigations of the phase behaviour of the fluid and physical characteristics of the reservoir rock. In view of the above limitations, it has been necessary to set up and perform model reservoir studies with the fluids and to recover as much core from the productive Madison limestone as possible in order that it might be analysed by conventional laboratory technique and be subjected to detailed microscopic geological examination."

The use of activated carbon for extracting gold and silver from pregnant cyanide solution and pulp has been investigated many times. The primary advantage of this use of activated carbon is that .the dissolved values can be recovered from slimy ore pulps or from slime portions of ore without settling and thickening or filtering. The loaded carbon is removed from the barren pulp, and the pulp can then be discarded. Activated carbon has been used recently in treating gold ores containing very little soluble silver. When the carbon was loaded with a suitable amount of gold, the silver load was negligible. The remaining problems concerned the removal of the gold from the carbon, the recovery of the gold as bullion, and the reuse of the unloaded carbon. As described in a recent report, a method that solved these problems was developed. The gold-laden carbon was leached with caustic sodium sulfide solution and the gold simultaneously recovered by electrolysis. Both the carbon and the spent solution can be reused. That process was applicable to gold-laden carbon only. It was not applicable to carbon carrying silver, because sodium sulfide does not leach silver from carbon but "fixes" it. It has been necessary, therefore, to develop a modified process for the removal or desorption of both gold and silver from loaded carbon. This modi¬fied process permits the use of activated carbon for extracting both gold and silver from gold ores carrying enough silver to have economical interest or in which silver may be the predominating value.

IN 1925 the writer undertook a detailed statistical study of all producing areas in the Joplin district as a basis for evaluating programs and measuring objectives. For this purpose, the published figures in the yearly volumes of Mineral Resources were used, supplemented for earlier years by publications of the Missouri Geological Survey and other local and less official sources. When all else failed, the available data were projected backward to hazard a reasonable guess as to the unrecorded early output of important areas. Fortunately, the proportion of such prehistory production is not a large factor in any of the totals. These results were used during the next few years to measure the relative importance of various producing areas and to predict the peak period of development of the all-important Picher field. For the purpose of this review, the charts have been completed to the end of 1950. During World War 11, the U. S. Bureau of Mines became interested in a similar study and issued comprehensive statistical tabulations of data up to 1945 ( Info. Circular 7383), which have been checked against the figures used herein. This tabulation, however, does not include all the earlier data used by the writer nor does it offer any estimates of the wholly unrecorded era in the beginnings of the earlier camps. The area covered in this study is shown in Fig. 1 on which are indicated the relative location and approximate outlines of the principal producing camps. This also shows the approximate yield to date of each major camp in terms of combined lead and zinc concentrates. The output of zinc concentrates is roughly seven times that of lead. Hence, the economy of the district has depended primarily on the price of zinc, with lead as an important byproduct. Over much of the productive period, lead concentrates averaged about twice the value of zinc concentrates per ton, and in certain mines or areas the proportion of lead to zinc was substantially above average. The Joplin district is largely flat prairie but is partly moderately dissected, partially wooded land with a relief generally less than 100 ft. The rocks are almost flat-lying, nearly parallel to the surface, and the chief ore formation is the Mississippian Boone limestone, including its cherty phases. This formation either outcrops in the producing areas or is covered by a thin veneer of Pennsylvanian shales. Virtually all the ore occurs within 400 ft of the surface, and a large part at less than 300 ft in depth. Most of the land was divided into small farms or town lots before mineral development; tracts seldom exceeded 160 acres, and averaged considerably less. Mineral rights followed the surface ownership, segregation was rare, and a system of leasing for mineral development became well established early in the region's history, many landowners deriving small to sizable fortunes from royalties. Because of the shal-lowness of the ore and other factors, prospecting and mining was cheaper than in almost any comparable mining district in the United States. This situation, coupled with the widely divided land ownership, offered a fertile field for promoters and speculators and led to the rise of many small mining concerns. Only in its later history, under stern economic compulsion, has control tended to centralize in a few companies. Under these conditions, any important new discovery or successful development had much the effect of a gold rush or an oil boom. Every property in the area was leased quickly, promptly drilled, and, if ore was found, it was soon on the market. Many companies and individuals participated, and the average producing lease-hold probably was about 40 acres in extent. Any important field thus was attacked by anywhere from 10 to 100 or more producers. Production zoomed, eventually steadied or wavered, and ultimately subsided, leaving a desolation of tailings mountains, cave-ins, empty housing, and wreckage. The object of this paper is to depict the pattern of this process, so far as metal production is concerned, and to note the way in which it reacted to economic and political pressures. Production Charts In Fig. 2 is charted the production record, in tons of lead and zinc concentrates combined, of eight of the principal camps, which together account for approximately 99 pct of the total district production, over the years from 1870 to 1950. This period covers all but the very minor beginning of mining history. Two important camps are divided by state lines; hence, it has been necessary to combine production records for the two portions, based on estimates that may be slightly in error. Certain camps are sub-dividable into important units for which separate figures are available in whole or in part and have been charted as fractions of the major unit. The corresponding price of zinc is shown above all the charts. Three camps, Aurora, Neck City, and Galena, show a remarkably symmetrical graphic pattern, which is interpreted as the norm. The curves rise steeply to a peak, level off for an irregular interval, and then drop sharply to zero on a slope corresponding roughly to that covered by the initial rise. The three portions of these charts seem appropriately characterized by the designations of youth, maturity, and decline. On the whole, with some irregularities, the production in each of the three periods seems to be almost equal. A fourth camp, Granby, fails to conform to the normal pattern. It exhibits a very long period of reasonably uniform, stabilized production corresponding to maturity, followed by a rather precipitate decline. Its youth is hidden in the era of prehistory. This habit of steady, long-continued production at an even keel is attributable to the fact that this camp, more than any other, was controlled largely by a single principal owner at any given period over most of its history and this permitted the imposition

THE past year has been of unusual interest for industrial minerals. It is increasingly evident that requirements for these raw materials move with general economic trends. Thus, with a peak year in the construction, chemical and petroleum industries, the nonmetallic mineral industries have been brought into the complex maze of an economy in which military spending is in the billions and in which the national income and wholesale commodity prices reached new levels. Many industrial minerals are of first rank essentiality in the defense effort and its supporting industries, and since some of these are of limited supply and others dependent on imports, the problems of procurement, distribution and conservation of available supplies make a complicated pattern. Despite some drawbacks and weak spots, the industrial mineral industries have, in general, met the national situation with great credit and many new production records have been set. The general accomplishment in 1951 should be one of satisfaction with confidence for the future. Difficulties, unsolved problems and uncertainties should not obscure the general trend which many consider optimistic. Prices in the main have been upward, in line with the inflation spiral, but nonmetallics appear with some exceptions to be behind the general increases. Labor difficulties have not been serious throughout the year. Retarding influences in expansions and planning have been the uncertainty of the Korean and international situations and a lack of confidence by many in the government economic program and its ultimate impact on the economic structure. It must also be kept in mind that stockpiling, unless all-out war develops, reaches a level and then ceases to be a major sustaining factor in the mineral markets. In accordance with the Defense Production Act of 1950 various control agencies have been set up to establish the desired rate of stockpile acquisitions. The objectives are subject to change depending on availabilities and needs-military, industrial, and civilian. In some minerals there has been disagreement on actual stockpile requirements, and there is some feeling that the needs of defense might be better met if more funds went into the development of new sources of supply of scarce raw materials and more materials were released to industry at this time. Nonmetallic minerals on the strategic and critical list of the Munitions Board as of July 1951 were: Group I; asbestos, some types; bauxite, refractory grade; beryl; celestite; chromite, chemical and refractory grades; columbite; corundum; diamonds, industrial; fluorspar, acid grade; graphite, some types; kyanite; manganese ore, battery and chemical grades; mica, some types; quartz crystals; rare earths; sapphire and ruby; talc, steatite, block; and Group II; bauxite, abrasive; cryolite, natural; diamond dies; graphite, crystalline fines; iodine; mica, muscovite block, stained and lower; rutile; selenium; talc, steatite, ground; zirconium ore, zircon. Details on the current status of stockpiling inventories are not available. The Defense Minerals Exploration Administration has, since April, executed 39 contracts for the exploration of nonmetallic minerals, including twenty for mica, seven for beryl-mica, six for asbestos, three for sulphur and one each for monazite, steatite talc and fluorspar. Total value of these contracts came to $892,059, of which the Government's participation amounts to $689,247. An improved centrifugal-testing apparatus has been designed and built in the Bureau of Mines laboratory at College Park, Md., which is unique in that it incorporates the use of resistance gages to measure directly the strains in a rotating model without testing it to failure. Owing to this feature, a more rapid testing method can be used; furthermore, model materials need not be restricted to those of the prototype. The behavior of any structure in which strains of significant magnitude are produced by its own weight may be studied in a small model subjected to simulated gravity loading. The model is rotated in a centrifuge to induce in it centrifugal forces, which, like the gravitational forces in the full-size structure, act on the volume elements and are proportional to the masses thereof. Centrifugal testing is, therefore, applicable to the design of mine openings and to the study of similar ground-control problems. It constitutes an experimental method for determining the state of strain in a structure for which analytical methods are excessively laborious or even impossible. In previous applications of centrifugal testing by other investigators, the models usually were tested to failure, and the analysis was made from-the type of break produced. The models were made of the same materials as the proto-type, and the test results were applied only to the particular prototype represented by the model. Beam deflections were measured from photographs of the rotating model, but no means was employed either to determine the actual distribution of stress in the model or to determine quantitatively the degree of restraint imposed on the ends of the loaded model beam, that is, to determine whether the loaded model behaved as a beam with rigidly fixed ends or as some other type of beam. With the apparatus described, it is possible to determine the state of strain, and thus the boundary conditions, in a rotating test model weighing up to 90 lb., which can be subjected to centrifugal forces up to about 2,600 times the force of gravity. The load-strain relationship, applicable directly to the prototype, can be determined from a Single model test. The test results can be presented as quantitative relations between the loads, strains, and dimensions and mechanical proper-ties of the structural members and can be applied to any prototype, whatever its component materials, that satisfies the similarity requirements.

The Mineral Industry of Canada in 1951 Continuance of the remarkable, successive increases in the value -of Canada's mineral production, chief basis of the nation's post-war expansion, was one of the highlights of Canadian development in 1951, when, according to the preliminary estimate is-sued by the Dominion Bureau of Statistics and reported in the BULLETIN for February, 1952, mineral output for the year reached a new high of $1,228 millions. This marked an increase of 17.5 percent over the previous year, which was the first in which the billion dollar mark had been reached, and an increase of 143.7 per cent over 1946, when production was valued at approximately $503 millions. While higher prices for the principal base metals accounted for a large part of the 1951 increase, quantity gains were made by copper, nickel, zinc, asbestos. lead, cement, and strikingly important. by petroleum, the value of which exceeded for the first time that of coal production. Gold was an exception to the general trend, being lower in both quantity and value than in 1950. For the first time nickel .came within $9 millions of surpassing-gold as the leading mineral product. Metals and Fuels The value of all metals, estimated at $733 millions, was 18.7 per cent more than in the previous year. Nickel advanced 11 per cent in volume and 34 per cent in value. Copper was up 2.4 per cent in quantity and 21 per cent in value, zinc rose 6.6 per cent in quantity and 35 per cent in value, and although the volume of lead produced was lower by 8 per cent, its value increased by 17 per cent. The tonnage of iron ore was 31 per cent higher than in 1950.

Abstract Golden Manitou Mines, Limited, nine miles east of the town of Val d'Or in northwestern Quebec, are presently milling, at the rate of 1,000 tons daily, a relatively complex 3.11-phide ore and producing, in decreasing order of value, zinc, silver, gold, lead, and copper. The products are a zinc concentrate, a silver-lead-copper concentrate, and a silver-gold precipitate from cyanidation. Although several independent pre-production metallurgical investigations into the treatment of the ore were carried out, current practice is different from any of the recommended methods and, while still leaving room for improvement, is considerably more effective than earlier performance. Flow-sheet developments from the commencement of operations in 1942 are dealt with briefly, showing the reasons for making numerous changes, the shortcomings of the various schemes tried, and, finally, covering data pertinent to present-day practice. From the recovery standpoint, silver has presented the greatest difficulty. The writer's association with the Company coincided with the start of production. Characteristics of the Ore The predominant metallic minerals present in the ore, in decreasing order of their abundance, are: pyrite, sphalerite, galena and chalcopyrite, with lesser amounts of argentiferous tennantite-tetrahedrite, arsenopyrite, covellite, bornite, and chalcocite. The sphalerite is mostly light in colour, sometimes colourless, and practically free from combined iron. Some of the sphalerite is very closely associated with minor amounts of pyrite, chalcopyrite, and galena. Pyrie is abundantly disseminated as medium to fine grains; more rarely it is massive and contains occasional grains of sphalerite, galena, and chalcopyrite.

THIS report gives results of an investigation of the carbonizing properties of the following eastern Kentucky coals: Elkhorn No. I bed, No. 28 mine, Wayland, Floyd County; Elkhorn No. 2 bed, Turner No. 5 mine, Drift, Flood County; Leatherwood (Haddix No. 5) bed, Leatherwood mine, Leatherwood. Perry County; and Harlan bed, Path Fork mine, Path Fork, Harlan County. The carbonizing properties were determined by Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association (BM-AGA) tests at 800° and 900° C. and by expansion tests in the sole-heated oven. Plastic properties were determined by tests in the Gieseler and Davis plastometers. The coals were tested singly and as blends with 20- and 30-percent low-volatile Pocahontas No. 3 coal. The dry, mineral-matter-free, fixed-carbon content of the carbonizing samples ranged from 56.7 percent for Elkhorn No. 2 to 59.7 percent for Leatherwood, and the heating values on the moist, mineral-matter-free basis ranged from 14,420 B. t. u. per pound for Elkhorn No. 2 to 14,720 for Harlan. The percentage of ash ranged from 2.9 to 6.1. The fluidity of three coals, measurer. In the Gieseler plastometer, ranged from 230 to 670 dial divisions; the fluidity of Elkhorn No. 2 could not be determined by this method. Blending lowered the fluidity of each coal; the fluidity of the blends containing 20 and 30 percent Pocahontas No. 3 ranged from 16 to 53 and from 8 to 17 dial divisions, respectively. Agglutinating values determined on silicon carbide-coal mixtures in the ratio 15:1 ranged from 3.8 to 6.3.

"AbstractProduction from the Excelsior Reservoir has amounted to approximately one million barrels. This production has caused a 'Pressure •drop of 10 p.s.i. from the original pressure of 1,245 p.s.i.g. Volumetric balance calculations indicate that the pool as being produced by a water drive whose strength is •probably unsurpassed in Western Canada. It has also been shown by 'unsteady state' calculations that the reservoir will still be above the saturation pressure of 915 p.s.i.g. at the time of depletion. The average permeability of the producing formation is approximately 1,000 millidarcys and, consequently, well draw-downs are very low. The field is essentially a bottom-water drive and calculations have shown that gravity drainage will greatly assist the recovery of oil. Water flooding data on several cores •have placed the flushing efficiency at •approximately 50 per cent, which indicates a recoverable oil-in-place of 17.7 million stock tank barrels. Calculations and field data indicate that the MER for the early life of this field is probably as high as 8,000 to 10,000 stock tank barrels per day.IntroductionTHE EXCELSIOR NISKU oil reservoir is located about twenty miles northeast of Edmonton. The field was discovered in November, 1949, by Imperial Excelsior N.o.1 well, in Lsd. 13, Sec. 3, Twp. 56, R. 22, W. 4, at a depth of 3,850 feet.Since discovery, development has continued on a 40~acre spacing pattern. At the end of 1951, drilling over approximately 80 per cent of the estimated productive area of 1,680 acres had established 32 we1ls capable •of production. THE continual improvements in. the two extremes of the drilling, unit, the drill and bit, have prompted critical examination of the drill steel, the weak link of this drilling unit. Obviously, little is to be gained from the betterment of the drill and bit if the drill steel which transmits the force needed for drilling from the machine to the bit cannot stand long hard service. The technology of the bit has advanced from the integral type to steel detachables, thence to the tungsten carbide insert. The carbide insert is the most significant advance in the bit, bringing it to the level of a machine tool with its performance records under constant surveillance. Long steel changes have become advantageous because the carbide bit will drill greater footages without replacement than did the steel bit: The development of the tungsten carbide insert opened new fields of endeavor in drilling with percussion drills here- to fore known, but limited by the steel bit. After the introduction of the tungsten carbide bit, drill manufacturers began promotion of long feed shells, lighter drifters and stopers, and easily handled auxiliary equipment. Ultimately this promotion of better equipment was intended to increase the bit-against-rock time of the drill shift. BECAUSE of the earthquakes that occur at Chuquicamata, the design of the smelter stacks constituted the most difficult structural problem of the entire sulphide ore project. Slight tremors occur almost daily and shocks of moderate magnitude are not uncommon. Naturally, the operation of the smelter depends upon the safety of these stacks, and their resistance to earthquakes was the critical feature of their design. Adequate data of the magnitudes of past shocks at Chuquicamata were not available. However, considering the information that was obtained from experiences in other parts of Chile, a period of one to two seconds was adopted as a basis for the design. To complicate the problem further, the stacks had to provide for operations under a wide variety of conditions ranging from the possibility of running one reverberatory furnace and two converters initially to perhaps five or six furnaces and eight or ten converters simultaneously in the completed plant. No one could tell for certain just what the ultimate capacity might have to be because the plans permitted a large extension beyond the first installation if this became necessary. Studies of the stacks were made for many conditions. At first it was thought that one stack 600 or 650 ft high should be used initially for both the furnaces and converters, with a second similar stack to be built for the future extension. This height would provide adequate draft in the rarified atmosphere at the plant's elevation of 10,000 ft. It would also disperse the gases high in the air. Preliminary studies of this large stack showed that such a structure was possible if made of steel but it would be exceedingly costly. Furthermore, the effects of the tendency for the top to whip under the action of earthquakes might be serious, and the design had to be based upon assumptions which might not be trustworthy. Such a tall stack was finally abandoned in favor of a larger number of smaller ones. Initially, one stack will service the first three or four furnaces. Another will handle the gases from four or five converters. The smelter has been located in such a position that the prevailing winds carry the fumes away from the remainder of the plant. A height of 300 ft for the stacks was finally selected. The top diameter is approximately 24 ft 9 in. clear inside of the lining. The converter stack is located upon a hill alongside the smelter. This provides an effective increase in height because its base is approximately 66 ft above the yard level. The base of the reverberatory stack is at the latter elevation. Stacks made of reinforced concrete or of steel were investigated, and so were many shapes for them. As these studies progressed, the lightness of a steel structure, and the ductility of the metal itself, led to the decision to use steel for the main part of the stacks. The fact that serious damage to one of the stacks would cause the plant to shut down, caused special studies to be made of the stress conditions that might exist around the breeching which had to be nearly 15 ft wide and 40 ft or more high where it joined the stack. This height was necessary in order to provide adequate transition from the horizontal flow of the gases to the vertical direction without undue eddies. This opening constituted a serious source of weakness in the structure. If made with sufficiently strong reinforcement around its edges, there would be a hard spot in the structure that might cause trouble because of shaft vibrations.

"THERE HAS BEEN a marked growth in the petroleum industry in Canada since the end of the war. The rate of growth in the demand for oil products has exceeded that in United States, although the per capita consumption is still less. Estimates of the consumption of petroleum and petroleum products in Canada in 1951 are approximately 154,000,000 barrels, which is slightly more than 11 •barrels per capita, whereas the estimated consumption in United States for the same period, according to World Petroleum, is placed at 2,619,- 970,000 barrels. This, on the basis of a population of 154,000,000, would be equivalent to 17 barrels per capita. The increase in consumption of the petroleum and products is world wide. World production in 1951 has been estimated (Oil and Gas Journal) at 11,700,000 barrels a day or more than 41;4, billion barrels for the year. United States production increased 13.7 per cent to 6,143,000 •barrels a day and Canada'.s ,, total production increased about 65 per cent from a total of 29,091,235 •barrels in 1950 to an estimated (Dominion Bureau of Statistics) 48,096,800 barrels in 1951.The trend to use increased amounts of petroleum and petroleum products, particularly in the United States and Canada, has also been supplemented by increased use of natural gas. The rate of expansion of the consumption of natural gas in United States in the past few years has been very rapid, increasing from 2,600 billion cubic feet in 1940 to 5,975 billion in 1950, with the proven reserves in the same period increasing from 85,000 billion to 186,000 billion cubic feet."
