INTRODUCTION AND PREVIOUS WORK THE determination of the low temperature tensile properties of tin and tin-lead alloys was initiated as part of an extensive research program on the phasial equilibria of tin binary systems below 13.2°C and the property changes associated therewith. A survey of the literature revealed that, although some room temperature tensile data were available for tin and a few tin-lead alloys, there existed no survey report of the low temperature tensile properties of these alloys. Accordingly, the tensile data for tin and a series of pure tin alloys containing from 0.01 to 50 pct lead were measured at eleven temperatures from -196 to +20°C and are presented here in survey form. In addition to the importance of these tensile data as a preliminary to certain fundamental research, this information promises also to be of commercial importance because of the 'extensive use now being made of tin-lead solders in refrigeration and gas liquefaction equipment. Occasional failures of the solders in low temperature service have been attributed by some metallurgists to low temperature mbrittlement, while others hold that failure results from the transformation of the tin-rich phase of the solder from the solid white (beta) to the powdered gray (alpha) form. From the data previously available in the literature, neither of these explanations can be completely corroborated. Cohen and van Lieshout1 have established the beta to alpha tin transformation at 13.2°C and have shown that strain accelerates the transformation. Further, they showed that although I pct lead retarded the transformation, it was not eliminated. It will be pertinent, then, to note whether the beta to alpha transformation of the tin-rich phase will occur in a short-time tensile test. Polanyi and Schmid2 studied the tensile . properties of tin single crystals at -185°C and report that tin is brittle at-this temperature. In 1946, Kostenets3 reported that pure tin was brittle at -196 and -253°C, while lead remained ductile at both these temperatures. He also studied the tensile properties of tin-lead alloys containing from 10 to 75 pct lead at -253, -196 and +17°C. The ultimate tensile strength increased more than two times in going from room temperature to -196°C and about three times that value on further cooling to -253°C. All the alloys were brittle at -6°C except those containing more than 75 pct lead. Even at -253°C, the 75 pct lead alloy retained 36 pct elonga¬tion in a 30 mm-ga. length. Introduction Research concerning all phases of hoisting practice, but more particularly the causes and prevention of hoisting rope deterioration and the improvement of safety dogs 158 for shaft conveyances, has been carried on intensively for the past three years in the Province of Ontario. Prior to the hoisting accident at the Paymaster mine on February 2nd, 1945, there had been no fatalities in the Province due to a hoisting rope failure. It was probably on this account that little original research on hoisting problems had been undertaken here and that the mining industry had been content to look to British, South African, and United States investigators for new developments in this field. Except for the Paymaster accident this might still be the case since, in any industry, it is apparently necessary for a serious accident to occur before any extensive programme of preventive research is launched. When this accident occurred, the Government of Ontario, with the close co-operation of the Paymaster officials and the mining industry as a whole, took immediate steps to determine the cause. A five-man, non-industry committee, selected from the Faculty of the University of Toronto with Dean C. R. Young as Chairman, was appointed by the Government, and a three-man Committee consisting of R. D. Parker, General Superintendent of the International Nickel Company of Canada, Limited, R. L. Healy, General Manager of Wright Hargreaves Mines, Limited, and R. E. Dye, General Manager of Dome Mines, Limited, with the latter acting as Chairman, was appointed by the Ontario Mining Association.

INTRODUCTION How often has the thoughtful observer pondered the apparent contradictions experienced in the weather? One can take records of two days, one in the winter and one in the summer. The "degree days" indicate that space heating and domestic load were present in one case and not in the other. The Business Index may be about the same, indicating that the industrial activity of the area and its concomitant use of fuel were about the same. Thus the volume of the products of combustion released to the atmosphere varied only as related to the space heating demand. Yet on one day in winter the atmosphere may be clear and bracing, while on a summer's day the air is thick and murky and the visibility sharply reduced. The situation may be reversed. What are some of the factors that contribute to the creation of these conditions? These few notes have been prepared to indicate some of the influences that are exerted on the problem. THE SOURCES OF ATMOSPHERIC POLLUTION The industrial area of Pittsburgh, Pa., has been a dominant center for the production of iron and steel for over one hundred years. In fact, with the growth of the numerous auxiliary processes Allegheny County which contains Pittsburgh is probably the most industrialized county in the world. In addition, the type of manufacture carried out in this area is predominant dependent on thermal energy (heat). That energy is supplied from coke and coal produced in the vicinity of Pittsburgh. Indicative of the stupendous quantities of fuel that are employed in this industrial area's economy, the following (Table No. taken from the U. S. Census (1940) may I of interest. An influence that has never been fully appreciated by many individuals is the fact that no matter what adventures the gases of combustion experience as they pass through the various processes, ulti¬mately the spent gases are discharged through chimneys to the atmosphere.

In a previous paper in these Proceedings(l) it was shown from a study of the bore'logs and analyses then available, that the brown coal seams of the Latrobe Valley areas show progressive changes in composition with increase of stratigraphic depth, equivalent to a rise in rank: These changes appear as:(i) An increase in ultimate carbon and hydrogen, calculated on a dry, ash-free basis, and(ii) An increase in calorific value, calculated on the, same basis, each of the order of 1% per 100 ft. of depth, and(iii) A decrease in moisture content of the order of 0.5% to 1.0% per 100 ft. of depth. The decrease in moisture content was found to be less regular than the other changes. In some bores the moisture content remained more or less constant throughout a single seam, or fluctuated slightly, decreasing stepwise on passage to the seam below.It was noted that individual analyses within a bore showed irregular fluctuations, tending to mask the general trend in composition change. This was particularly so for the moisture content, which had been determined for 10 ft. lengths of core, whereas the other components were determined for 50 ft. lengths of core. Averaging of the moisture contents over 50 ft. lengths reduced the masking effects of these irregularities. The suggestion was made that these irregularities arose from variations in the relative proportions of pollen, resin, wood (lignite) and woody attritus composing the core. The fuel requirements for industrial and domestic consumers in New England, in normal times, are supplied almost entirely by fuel oil, anthracite, and bituminous coal. A shortage of these fuels occurred during the war. This shortage was caused by: (1) The diversion of oil to military uses; (2) the use of railroad and boat facilities that ordinarily would transport coal for the transportation of war material; (3) the inability of coal mines to apply the increased demand for coal which resulted from the conversion from oil to coal by domestic and industrial consumers; and (4) the increased demand of war industries for coal. Because of this Critical fuel situation, an investigation was made of possible sources of fuel nearer to points of consumption in New England.

Canadian steel foundry practice has made marked progress during the past decade. Equipment suppliers, development engineers, and foundry personnel have focussed their attention on every phase of the foundry operation, with a resulting lower demand on manpower and materials. Also, more rigid specification requirements as to dimensional tolerances and quality have necessitated improvement and increased control at every stage from the pattern shop to the cleaning room. The growing trend toward mechanization is clearly evident. Equipment such as sand mixers, sand reclamation systems, material handling devices, moulding machines, core blowers, etc., is being increasingly employed by the steel foundryman. This equipment not only increases production but also tends to lessen the human variable so prevalent and disconcerting in the early days of steel founding. The result has been an improved and more reliable steel casting, which is gradually obtaining wider acceptance by design engineers. The purpose of this paper is to discuss briefly some of the practices being used, and also the direction of development that is being pursued by Canadian steel foundrymen.

Introduction Lithium has been known since 1817, when it was discovered by the Swedish chemist, Arfvedson, while working in the laboratory of Berzelius on the chemical analysis of the mineral petalite, LiAl(Si205)2. Development of the chemistry of lithium proceeded slowly, following the early work of Davy, Gmelin, Bunsen, and Matthiessen. Approximately seventy years elapsed before lithium products assumed any commercial importance, and for a considerable period it was a' very minor industry. Their chief early use seems to have been in medicine, and in the production of lithiated water. Other more important uses were gradually discovered, and the industry has had a slow but steady growth. Chemistry Lithium is classified as an alkali metal, along with sodium, potassium, rubidium, and cæsium. Like these, it is a silvery-white metal, which can be cut with a knife; it is harder than sodium, but softer than lead" It is remarkable in having a density of only 0.53 gram per cubic centimeter, which makes it the lightest metal. On ignition in air, it burns intensely to form chiefly lithium monoxide, Li2O. Like the other alkali metals, lithium reacts vigorously with water to form hydrogen and lithium hydroxide. The later is a strong base, and reacts with acids to form salts. The salts of lithium are in general analogous to those of the -other alkalies, but many of them have unique properties. For example, lithium chloride and bromide are extremely hygroscopic, and have a very high water solubility. Lithium fluoride, phosphate, and carbonate, on the other hand, are all relatively insoluble, unlike the corresponding sodium and potassium compounds. In this instance, lithium exhibits its frequent tendency to resemble the alkaline-earth group of elements (calcium, strontium, and barium). Many of the special and valuable properties of lithium are related to the extremely small size of the lithium ion.

With the post-war expansion of mmmg activities on its Western group of mines, the management of Lake View and Star Limited has commenced a project for the improvement of underground ventilation.The major part of this project is to provide adequate return airways for the ventilation of the deep levels. To this end, the Ivanhoe South Extended shaft is being enlarged, and ultimately an exhaust fan with a capacity of 180,000 cu. ft. of air per minute will be installed at the shaft collar.Prior to 1932, the shaft was used exclusively for baling water from the 800 and 2,000 ft. levels. These two levels are the only ones connected to workings from the Horseshoe lease. After the installation of pumping plant at the Horseshoe Main Shaft, baling was discontinued, and the water was graVitated from dams to the pumps on the 1,000 and 2,000 ft. levels.Water makes into the shaft, through a series of fault planes, between the 600 and 1,500 ft. horizons. The total flow is 16 gal. per minute, of which approximately 7 gal. per minute graVitates to the 800 ft. level. As a big proportion of the water dropped uncontrolled through the shaft, a downcast current of air approximating 20,000 c.f.m. was induced. This air ventilated a limited area of workings in the Horseshoe lease, between the 2,000 and 2,360 ft. levels.In 1938, it was decided to reverse the direction of the airflow in the shaft. The application of Muskat's differential equations for predicting the performance of a solution gas-drive reservoir to the Fullerton field indicates that a recovery may be expected of 14,030 bbl per acre under primary depletion, and 15,910 and I7,190 bbl per acre, respectively, under the two pressure-maintenance programs analyzed. In this analysis it is assumed that fluid properties are the same throughout the reservoir, that the core data used are typical of the Clear Fork limestone in the locality, and that injected gas is completely diffused through the pay zones. The economic study of the three recovery programs considered indicates that the one in which 60 pct of the produced gas is returned to the formation is the most profitable. Introduction The purpose of this paper is to consider the effect of pressure maintenance by gas injection on the ultimate recovery of oil from a solution gas-drive reservoir. This prediction of reservoir behavior is the result of calculations based on the equations presented by M. Muskat in the Journal of Applied Physics, March 1945. Reservoir The reservoir analyzed is the Fullerton field in Andrews County, West Texas. It is situated on a broad anticlinal structure with approximately 330 ft of closure, and extends approximately eight miles north and south and five miles east and west. The areal extent is taken as 16,642 acres. The producing horizon is the Lower Clear Fork limestone of Permian age, occurring at depths from 6650 to 7350 ft. It is divided into four zones. For the purposes of this study, the fluid characteristics in all zones are assumed to be the same. Therefore an equivalent zone is assumed of thickness equal to the sum of the thicknesses of the four zones, or an average of 216 ft. The reservoir contains 3,586,991 acre feet of producing limestone, with an initial volume of stock tank oil in place of 918,-403,100 bbl. The average connate water saturation is 24.0 pct. The permeability ranges from 6.7 md. to 12.6 md., and the porosity ranges from 7.7 pct to 11.4 pct, except for occasional cavernous streaks. Based on these values, the limestone may be considered intergranu1ar.l Production histories and material-balance studies have indicated that the driving mechanism is solution gas. Water levels have been established. Theory It is possible to express mathematically the change in residual oil saturation with pressure decline in a solution gas-drive reservoir as being equal to the change in the physical properties of the fluids present in the reservoir as this pressure decline occurs. THe answer to the title question will be found by considering the ultimate influence of the petroleum engineers on industry and by considering the tools with which petroleum engineers must be equipped. Some 2000 to 3000 petroleum engineers are being absorbed by the industry yearly, indicating the magnitude of influence which they may exert on the industry. The petroleum industry is a highly technical one and it is inevitable that management be entrusted more and more to executives with technical training. The industry, therefore, expects the petroleum engineering schools to provide a broad basic training and a social and economic orientation which goes beyond merely supplying the minimum technical qualifications necessary to discharge responsibilities for a particular job. Because of the many branches of industry, emphasis must be placed on the Student's being trained in fundamentals, as well as grounded in other engineering branches, such as mechanical, civil and electrical engineering. The petroleum engineering graduate must know how to outline and organize the material for an engineering report and should be thoroughly grounded in English, both written and spoken. Even to the end that a five-year course may be required, they should receive instructions in auxiliary cultural and social science courses, industrial relations, and public speaking. Training in the method of approach to an engineering problem is something in which industry is deeply interested. A standard of ethics, a desire to arrive at the truth, and leadership training should be stressed. Introduction The basis of an an to any ques- tion concerning the petroleum engineering schools' responsibility to the industry will be found by considering the ultimate influence of the petroleum engineers on the industry and by considering also the tools with which petroleum engineers must be equipped in order to achieve success and happiness in the role in which their training, individual talents and choice of a profession ultimately will cast them. The problem must always be considered as it relates to a large group and not as it relates to a particular individual possessing strong natural talents and destined, by virtue of them, to pursue a certain course. The question implies that petroleum engineering schools have a responsibility, and indeed they do, not only to the industry but also to the students and even to the public. Because the responsibility is concentrated in a relatively few schools whose graduates are absorbed largely by the one industry, the responsibility is more apparent and the effect of failure to discharge the responsibility fully is more serious than the effect of similar failure on the part of schools supplying a smaller portion of the industry's intake of engineering graduates. This fact is especially true with respect to an industry such as the petroleum industry whose ratio of technical to nontechnical employees is relatively high and is increasing.

"INTRODUCTION During the war period the Bureau of Mines expanded its investigations on western coals principally in connection with Investigations of raw material resources for western steel production. Owing to the expansion of the steel industry, there was some concern regarding the availability of suitable coking coals; end because of the potential steel shortage, the production of sponge iron, using the lower-rank fuels, was considered. Work was conducted by the Bureau of Mines on exploration projects and on testing of coals both at the Central Experiment. Station at Pittsburgh, Pa., and at the Bureau of Mines Station at Golden, Cole.The results of these investigations are being published by the Bureau in several reports of investigations and technical papers. In making this resume of coal investigations, the work done by the Bureau of Mines at Pittsburgh in the Mining and Coal Carbonization Sections will be discussed and the investigations at Golden described in greater detail.INVESTIGATIONS OF WESTERN COALSThe Mining and Coal Carbonization Sections of the Coal Division, Bureau of Mines, under the supervision of A. L. Teeny es and J. D. Davis, respec¬tively, conducted many field investigations to locate and evaluate new sources of coking coals. Drilling explorations were made in Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, New Mexico, and Washington and revealed two important new reserves of coking coal. The first one studied was the Willow Creek bed at Kemmerer, Wyo., which was reported in 1945.3/ A recoverable reserve estimated at 11,200,000 tons was blocked out, and samples of coal were extracted for coking tests. The coking properties of the coal were not quite equal to those of Sunnyside coal, but it was indicated that a 50-percent blend of the Willow Creek with Lower Sunnyside will produce a satisfactory metallurgical coke based on Columbia steel standards."

A simplification of the method of Hurst and McCarty for conducting potentiometric model studies by the single probe method is presented along with experimentally determined invasion patterns for certain idealized flow problems. The analytical solution for one class of these problems is given. Finally, a general description is given of a newly developed instrument which permits direct mapping of flow lines and determination of transit times in potentiometric-model studies. Introduction The object of this paper is to present: I. A simplification of the method of Hurst and McCarty for conducting poten-tiometric-model studies of oil and gas reservoirs by the single probe method. 2. Results of a series of studies of certain idealized flow problems and the general conclusions to be drawn therefrom. 3. A description of a new instrument, the Chronocartograph, which greatly reduces the labor and time required for conducting potentiometric-model studies. Certain general conclusions may be drawn as results of the investigation of the idealized flow problems. They are: I. Injection and extraction areas should be separated by as great a distance as conditions permit since, in general, the recovery prior to first breakthrough tends to vary as the square of this distance. 2. Little advantage is to be gained by use of more than eight injection wells or groups of injection wells for the case of circular productive limits. 3. Elongated shapes of productive limits are best exploited by injection on the extended major axis only, with a line of extraction wells lying on the major axis. 4. The use of peripheral injection wells for elongated shapes is permissible, if necessary, but requires extension of the line of extraction wells. The exploitation of an oil or gas field is effected either by the expansion of the gas and oil, or by their displacement by another fluid. Both methods may be used simultaneously. When the displacement of the oil or gas is the controlling factor there arises the problem of mapping the progress of the boundary between the fluid in place and the displacing fluid. This problem is of particular interest in the operation of a cycling project in a gas-condensate field, where the wet gas is produced from one or more wells, commonly called "extraction wells.'' This wet gas is taken into a processing plant where the condensate is removed. The remaining "dry" gas is injected back into the field through one or more wells, called "injection wells," both to conserve the gas for future use and also to maintain the pressure in the field. Early in 1944 the Chilean Government expressed a desire for assistance from the Bureau of Mines in a study of the coal deposits, coal-mining methods, and preparation and benefication of coals in Chile. A Memorandum of Understanding setting forth the purpose of the work was executed by the United States Government and the Government of Chile. Parts of this agreement are quoted: On February 4, 1944, the Ambassador of Chile in Washington expressed the interest of his Government in obtaining the loan of a mission of experts to assist in the conduct of a survey looking toward the utilization of the low-grade coals of Chile and the application of such technology as may be developed for the distillation of these coals and the use of oil shales. The matter has since been the subject of correspondence between the Secretary of State and the United States Department of the Interior, and the latter Department has agreed to cooperate with the Government of Chile, through the Bureau of Mines, subject to the following understanding:

For many years the Federal Bureau of Mines has been investigating fires and explosions in mines, tunnels, buildings, and hazardous processes of various kinds. Means and methods for controlling and extinguishing mine fires and preventing explosions and other accidents in many hazardous processes require the collection and analysis of samples of the atmospheres surrounding the sources of ignition. Complex mixtures of gases often encountered in mines, tunnels, and industrial processes may well presage imminent danger from explosions. This report discusses some practicable methods of utilizing the analyses of samples of complex mixtures of gases in their application to the many problems that arise from their presence.

The investigation described in this report was begun as part of the Bureau of Mines progress to develop acid processes for the extraction of alumina from low-grade bauxite and. clays. A domestic shortage of high-grade bauxite sui table for treatment by the Bayer process became acute as a result of' World War II; an intensive search for a practical acid process using lower-grade alumina-bearing raw materials was therefore warranted. The laboratory development was described in a preceding Bureau of Mines publication wherein the basic theory for the design and erection of a pilot plant maybe found. A 2-ton-per-day continuous pilot plant was constructed and successfully operated at College Park, Md., which demonstrated conclusively the chemical and mechanical feasibility of a solvent purification process for aluminum sulfate. The estimated production cost of $38.64 indicates that under present market conditions the process would not be economically feasible.

WHAT are the reasons for the present public interest in the synthetic fuel industry, an interest which has culminated in the recommendation of the Secretary of the Interior that we start at once on a nine billion dollar program of construction? Three separate factors seem to have combined to create this pressure. First are recurrent seasonal and spot shortages of gasoline, fuel oil, and natural gas. Second is the international outlook, which forces us to face the possibility of war, with all that means in the way of increased call on our domestic resources and interference with our foreign commerce. The shortages we have experienced are superficially the result of lack of transportation, but basically they reflect a rapidly rising demand which has outstripped the expansion of productive facilities of all kinds. Not only oil and gas, but steel, coal, automobiles, and meat are temporarily in short supply for much the same reasons. The military problem has both long-range and short-range aspects, but the immediate necessity is to create reserve capacity in the United States to supply perhaps 2,000,000 barrels daily additional liquid fuel in time of war.

A STURDY and consistent expansion of the metal industry occurred in 1947 exemplified by an increase of approximately 30 per cent in steel consumption over 1946. For this major reason, ferroalloy metals have seen their most useful and important peace-time year. The current domestic rate of consumption of high-grade ferroalloy ores, together with added consumption of new foreign producers as well as for eign nationals' restrictions on high-grade exports, makes very evident the increasing difficulties of obtaining sufficient high-grade ores. This accentuates the need for new and less expensive methods of production of ferro-alloy metals of higher purity from lower-grade domestic resources. As an important factor in preparedness, procurement of these high-grade, -critical ferroalloy minerals and metals for our nation's stock piles is a most important task. Also, this stock-piling can be the means of supplying incentive for the industrial development of the new metallurgical processes and plants necessary for the recovery of ferroalloy metals from our domestic low-grade deposits.

NOW that the dust of World War II has settled and we and our allies are faced with extravagant losses of men, money, and materials, virtually the only hope that the United States and Britain have in the way of reparations lies in the capture of industrial, technical, and scientific secrets. Even during the war American and British scientists and technicians gained access to German factories, questioned German personnel, studied German documents, and endeavored generally to keep pace with new discoveries in science, industrial technology, and process development. Under various agencies this work continued for two years after the war. Altogether at least 600 American scientists and industrialists have gone to Germany and brought back reports and several times as many British, Canadian, and. Australian investigators have been similarly engaged under co-operative arrangements designed to assure the maximum of coverage with a minimum duplication of effort. As a result of these investigations and document studies, about 500 or 600 reports have been prepared on metallurgical and allied subjects. Those by American authors or joint teams have been listed in the annotated Bibliography of Scientific and Industrial Reports, issued by the Office of Technical Services in the U. S. Department of Commerce. Many of the British reports are also available in this country through the same office or through a British representative in New York. IN 1947 the steel industry rebounded from its wartime effort and produced a record-breaking peacetime tonnage of steel ingots. During the first six months of the year the industry produced 42,000,000 tons of ingots and expected to produce 85,000,000 tons for the year. With a rated capacity of some 91,000,000 tons, production was at a rate of about 93 per cent of capacity. Credit must be extended to the steel producers who have maintained this steady state of operations while faced with many problems, not the least of which was a continued shortage of satisfactory scrap. Furthermore, the steel industry started a record-breaking peacetime expansion program at a total cost of more than $1,000,000,000. This program will increase the ingot-making capacity of the country by 2,500,000 tons and should be completed in 1948.
