Nautilus Minerals, the world?s leader in exploration and development of deep ocean seafloor resources, is today focused on the recovery of high-grade copper and gold in seafloor massive-sulphide mineralization. These targeted mineralized belts, analogous to land-based volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits, are located near plate boundaries in the back arc basins of the Western Pacific. The first deposit to be developed by the company is located at a depth of 1,600 meters at Solwara 1, in the benign waters of the Bismarck Sea. This location lies within the territorial waters of Papua New Guinea. From 2006 to 2009 the company completed detailed environmental and geological studies at Solwara 1, culminating in a number of world firsts, including the first Environmental Permit granted for the extraction of seafloor massive sulphide deposits and the first NI 43-101 compliant seafloor massive sulphide deposit resource statement. Nautilus has relied heavily on proven deepwater technologies from the oil and gas industry in the design of its production system. Pipeline trenching units, workclass ROVs, deepwater production risers and drill cuttings removal systems will be adapted to initiate this new and exciting industry. Key contractors used by Nautilus on this innovative project have all been selected for their deepwater experience (gained in the oil and gas industry), creativity and determination to launch this new industry successfully. Innovation is at the forefront of Nautilus? success to date. This paper summarizes the progress to date of this development which will provide a new source of minerals for the world and which will contribute to sustainable growth for the future.

Introduction and Historical Background The office and mining operations of Pacific Asbestos Corporation are located near Copperopolis, California in the foothills of the Sierras about fifty miles east of Stockton. This is historic country in the heart of the old Mother Lode gold district. Mark Twain's famous story of the jumping frog, written here, is still commemorated in an annual contest in Calaveras County,' and the camp at Poker Flats, described by Bret Harte, was only a few miles from the present mine.2 Joaquin Murrieta, the famous Mexican bandit started his three year reign of terror in this vicinity,3 and Black Bart, the P08 laureate of the stagecoach robbers, held up his first stage at Funk Hill, just three miles north of the mine. His last robbery was at almost the place, on the top of the hill overlooking the Stanislaus River ferry crossing. Although this was his favorite country, and he traveled extensively through it, he was not a credit to his acclaimed profession of Mining Engineer because there is no evidence that he ever recognized the asbestos, and he was finally caught as a consequence of the robbery at the ferry.4 One of the old stagecoach roads crossed the Stanislaus River at the mine site, and the ferry landing may still be seen from the main haul road into the pit. The road itself is partly buried under the rock dumps. In spite of its location and apparently prominent exposure, the first work on the asbestos deposit was not recorded until 1904.5 Development of the present operations was started in 1959 by Jefferson Lake Asbestos Corporation, a subsidiary of Jefferson Lake Sulphur Company. Management control of the company changed hands several times and it was later reorganized under the name of Pacific Asbestos Corporation. In December, 1968, a controlling interest was acquired by H. K. Porter Company, Inc. Figure (1) shows the mill and office buildings as seen from a site near the entry road. The offices are at the left with the mill warehouse in the foreground. The conveyor at left center carrys mine concentrates up the hill from the crusher. In the background are the dry rock storage building and mill tailings piles. Since the beginning of mining operations in 1962, seven and three-quarter million tons of ore and fifteen million tons of waste have been removed from the open pit which now measures about 1400 x 1800 feet at its widest points. The lowest operating level is at an elevation of 726 feet about 325 feet below the original surface. Figure (2) shows the open pit looking toward the west end. The main haul road can be seen along the side of the pit. A shovel is operating at the bottom of the pit while a front end loader on the level above provides ore for blending. In the background are rock dumps for waste stripping. The company markets an annual production of 30-35,000 tons of chrysotile fibre in groups 4 through 7, under the Mother Lode Brand

The LaModel program (Heasley, 1998) is a displacement discontinuity, boundary element model (BEM) for analyzing stresses and displacements in single and multiple-seam coal mines. After the Crandall Canyon mine collapse, the need for better design guidelines for LaModel was observed and a new calibration method for deep cover pillar retreat was developed (Heasley et al., 2010). However, the scope of this initial calibration was limited to single-seam mines deeper than 750 ft. This limited application of the initial calibration method lead directly to the research presented in this paper, which attempts to define appropriate LaModel calibration guidelines for pillar design where shallow cover and/ or multiple-seam mining scenarios are encountered. As part of this research, a database of shallow cover case histories has been developed, and this database is used to help validate the shallow cover calibration method. By adding the shallow cover database to the previous deep cover database, the LaModel calibration method has now been extended to the complete range of mining depths, as well as to multiple-seam cases. With this shallow cover calibration, the utility of the LaModel program continues to increase.

Toughness testing of fibre reinforced concrete (FRC) at 28 days age is typically undertaken as part of quality control for the many applications where fibres are used in concrete, including shotcrete, tunnel segments, and cast-in-place tunnel linings. The performance achieved at 28 days is usually assumed to be retained with increasing age. However, as the average strength grade of concrete used in most tunnelling applications, including tunnel segments, has steadily increased over the last 20 years, this assumption is becoming increasingly unviable. This is because for some types of fibre the mode of post-crack fibre behaviour depends on the strength of the concrete and can change from a desirable high-energy pull-out mode to a low-energy rupture mode as the strength and age of concrete increases. This paper describes a series of trials performed over two years in which the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) C1609/C1609M beam tests were used to assess the performance of FRC reinforced with two widely used brands of steel and macro-synthetic fibre. The hooked-end steel fibres used for half the beams exhibited a dramatic fall in performance beyond 56 days age as the mode of failure changed from pull-out to rupture. The other fibre did not exhibit a fall in performance with age. This phenomenon highlights the need to quantify performance of FRC at much later ages when long-term performance is required, for example, to resist seismic events or changes in ground stress due to nearby excavations. As an alternative, a reduction factor may be applied to the performance of FRC mixes for which evidence of satisfactory long-term performance is not?available.CITATION:Bernard, E S, 2014. The Syncrude open pit mine, located near Fort McMurray in northeastern Alberta, produces approximately 410 000 tonnes of oil sand feed daily, which, after undergoing a bitumen extraction phase, generates approximately 315000 tonnes of tailings solids daily. The tailings are used to hydraulically construct containment dykes and supporting beaches of the storage facilities. Tailings deposition commenced in May 1978 with the commissioning of the Mildred Lake Settling Basin which is currently composed of approximately 600M m3of solid sand approximately 300M m3of contained fluids with fine tailings in suspension for consolidation. Two other storage facilities, commissioned over the past six years, have been developed to store sand and consolidated fine tailings referred to as mature fine tailings. Fine tailings reduction initiatives being developed will be successful in reducing future production of fine tailings volume by 20%. These initiatives include spiking (addition of fine tailings to coarse tailings lines for deposition), composite tailings (addition of gypsum to promote consolidation) and freeze/thaw dewatering, also to promote consolidation. The mandate of research efforts is to enhance tailings disposal and to develop economical and technically feasible reclamation initiatives. Final tailings landscapes will be geotechnically stable and ecologically productive to minimize or eliminate long-term liability. This technical paper will review the design philosophies of the current facilities and provide an overview of the areas of continuous improvement in the field of tailings management practices through the concerted research efforts and their implementation.

The design of hydrostatic liner for a deep potash mine shaft in Saskatchewan poses tremendous technological challenges. Technology has evolved to a point where one could consider a new innovative approach to hydrostatic liner design. But there is still a place for conventional technologies such as cast iron tubbings. As will be discussed in this paper, improvement to manufacturing process, installation procedures and even new materials can bring this technology to an excellent level of performance. With the spur of new projects in the potash industry of Saskatchewan, the authors worked in various shaft liner designs from the conceptual stage through to the construction phase. They were either directly leading the design work on some of these projects or acting as an external reviewer on others. Most of these shaft liner designs involved cast iron tubbing technology and ground freezing. The major challenge in sinking potash shafts in Saskatchewan is to go through a water-bearing ground formation under high pressure, known as the Blairmore or Manville fm. The only proven stabilizing technology for these formations is ground freezing. For a potash shaft, dry shaft conditions are highly desired, so a fully waterproof hydrostatic liner is required. All the existing potash mine shafts in Saskatchewan, except for two with composite steelconcrete lining, used the cast iron tubbing technology. Two new shaft tubbing liners have been constructed recently, one in the Athabasca Basin and one for a potash mine in Saskatchewan. When the authors began working on these new projects, what became quickly evident is that the technological knowhow for designing and constructing tubbing liners was no longer available within Canada and that the past construction methods used to sink tubbing lined shafts was obsolete. The tubbing liner for the shafts sunk in the sixties were designed either by German or British companies. In both of these countries only few tubbing lined shafts were sunk in last 40 years and the technology used in the sixties was not improved. There are only few countries where tubbing is routinely produced and installed: China, Russia, Ukraine and Poland. Out of these countries Poland is the one where this technology is the most advanced. The authors, working in close collaboration with engineers from Poland, attempted to rebuild this knowledge for the mining industry in Canada. This process involved thorough analysis of old technical reports, literature review and study of current polish design and construction practices as well as site visits of existing shafts. Through actual construction experience, some lessons were learned as well as ideas for improvements. In this paper, the authors will present a succinct review of design and procurement process. But, the practical aspects of the construction and installation methodology will be treated with more emphasis, more specifically the practice leading to good liner performance. Some of the poorly understood technical aspects of tubbing installation will be discussed more thoroughly and some currently accepted myths dispelled.

Throughout the 2016/2017 financial year, the NSW Resources Regulator conducted an assessment of each underground metalliferous operation across the state to assess how each operation managed the principal mining hazard of ground and strata control. The assessment considered all aspects of the mining process, including all aspects of managing geotechnical risk within drawpoints. This assessment is ongoing and, therefore, this paper is limited to the first six mines assessed in the program.In 2015 there were three fatalities in and around underground drawpoints in Australian metalliferous mines. Whilst many of the systems of work around underground development are consistent across the industry, there are large discrepancies around how each underground mining operation manage the risks associated with drawpoints.For drawpoints to be effectively managed, their management needs to be considered at the earliest stages of the mine planning process. By using downholes and adopting remote systems of work – systems that are continuing to improve with technology – the risks drawpoints posed can be greatly reduced.The assessment by the NSW Resources Regulator revealed a number of common failings across the state in the management of the risks that drawpoints pose. The assessment also observed a number of innovative practices that particular operations have adopted in the wake of serious incidents occurring within drawpoints at their operation; however, these practices have not been communicated to other operations.It is hoped the learnings from the assessment can be considered by industry and reduce the risks drawpoints pose in underground metalliferous mines.CITATION:Hill, X, 2017. "IntroductionDynamic failure events in an underground coal mine, or “bumps,” are defined as “the sudden, violent bursts of coal from a pillar or pillars or a block of coal, resulting in a section, the whole pillars, or the solid block of coal being thrown into an open entry” (Peng, 2008). Reports of disastrous and often fatal dynamic failure events date back over one hundred years in the United States. Mining practices and technologies have significantly evolved over the course of the last century, yet these events continue to occur. The events at Crandall Canyon, Utah (Gates et al., 2007) and Brody No. 1 Mine in West Virginia (Barker and McNeely, 2014) are two recent failure events that resulted in a total of eleven fatalities. These events testify to the fact that dynamic failure remains an imperative safety concern. Furthermore, their continued occurrences indicate that engineering controls have proven inadequate at wholly mitigating the problem.Multiple conditions have been associated with the occurrence of dynamic failure phenomena, including• thick, competent strata that can create a bridging effect, resulting in high abutment stresses (Rice, 1935; Holland and Thomas, 1954; Iannacchione and Zelanko, 1995; Agapito and Goodrich, 2000; Peng, 2008; Whyatt, 2008; Whyatt and Varley, 2010)• overburden thicknesses greater than 500–700 ft. (Rice, 1935; Peng, 2008)• a strong coal that is resistant to crushing (Rice, 1935; Peng,2008) or that is “uncleated or poorly cleated, strong…sustains high stress and tends to fail suddenly” (Agapito and Goodrich, 2000)• the presence of sandstone channels or rolls that can serve to concentrate stresses (Iannachione and Zelanko, 1995; Agapito and Goodrich, 2000)• fracturing of strong units above or below the coal seam (Whyatt and Varley, 2010)• slip along pre-existing discontinuities (Peperakis, 1958; Whyatt and Varley, 2010)• multiple seam mining interactions (Campoli, Kertis, and Goode, 1987; Iannachione and Zelanko, 1995; Newman, 2002; Peng, 2008)• mining sequences that can cause anomalously high stress concentrations (Campoli, Kertis, and Goode, 1987; Iannachione and Zelanko, 1995)"

"The mining operation at Namdeb’s Southern Coastal Mine (SCM) is unique. It targets gravel layers up to 30 m below sea level, which continue to dip deeper, further west, under the Atlantic Ocean. On this storm-dominated coastline, severe water seepage into mining areas, rugged orebody footwall characteristics, and highly variable resource grades all contribute to a challenging operational environment. Namdeb has a proud history of innovation, and as the mine progresses further westwards and associated technical and economic challenges increase, this innovative culture has become essential to the future of the mine. The Theory of Constraints (ToC) has been widely used at SCM, and across the mining discipline, to focus efforts on improving overall business profitability. Through analysis of the mining processes, opportunities were identified, solutions developed, and initiatives implemented with staggering results across all three mining disciplines, i.e. stripping, load and haul, and bedrock bulking and cleaning. This paper outlines the solutions adopted and the results of the ToC analysis. IntroductionSouthern Coastal Mine (SCM) is one of three Namdeb operations located in the southwestern corner of Namibia, between the Orange River in the south, the Namib Desert to the east and the Atlantic Ocean to the west (Figure 1). These three geographical features set the backdrop for the world’s greatest marine diamond mining placer (Badenhorst, 2003). SCM is situated along the coastline extending from the mouth of the Orange River to Chameis Bay approximately 120 km to the north. The active mining area, called Mining Area 1 (MA1) is, however, limited to very narrow strip, 30 km in length, in the south of the licence area, close to the town of Oranjemund.Namdeb, a wholly owned subsidiary of Namdeb Holdings, is a 50/50 joint venture between De Beers and the Government of Namibia. Diamonds were first discovered along the Namibian coastline in April 1908, close to the town of Luderitz, but mining operations started in the SCM mining area only in February 1929 (Schneider, 2009). Initially all Namdeb mining operations exploited massive land-based deposits, producing nearly 40 million carats from MA1 between 1920 and 1977 (Schneider, 2009) when mining targeted onshore raised beaches west of the high water line. Since 1977 however, SCM and Namdeb have developed a unique mining method to economically extract the resource which extends westward under the Atlantic Ocean."

Technologies developed within the field of extractive metallurgy to recover, concentrate, and purify metals and industrial minerals from ores, have served as the foundation for all of the subsequent environmental remediation, materials recycling, and waste management technologies. This paper discusses the application of classical extractive engineering principles to the development of a thermal process for the recovery of mercury from solid wastes. Process development is presented as a series of logical stages, which begin with a thorough characterization of the site-specific waste, move on to bench and pilot scale testing of the process options, and end with a functional process flowsheet. This paper also presents thermodynamic data on many mercury species of interest to the minerals, power, and chemical industries. These data can be used to model the speciation and recovery of the mercury as a function of various process parameters.

At a time when water resource planning is proceeding on a continental scale, such as the proposed $100 billion North American Water and Power Alliance, which would redistribute water among three nations, including seven provinces of Canada, 35 of the United States, and three States of Mexico, the selection of a single river basin for study may seem to require an apologia. None is offered because of ( 1) the magnitude of the Indus , itself a part of the great Indo-Gangetic Plain drainage system, with Himalayan sources, upon which the thickly populated northern sub-continent of Indo-Pakistan depends for agriculture and hydroelectic power; (2) the extraordinary problems created by dismemberment of the world?s largest irrigation system through legal beheading of the Eastern Waters under the Indus Waters Treaty of 1960; and (3) the herculean effort to contain the twin encroachments of waterlogging and salinization in a basin which faces a shortage of fresh water. The British irrigation system of barrages and canals on the Indus was a venture admirable in conception. Unfortunately, it is now a legacy burdened with unwanted consequences, due to interference with the hydrological regimen, particularly the rise of water table occasioned by leakage.

The expansion in gold production in the Carlin 'Trend over the last few years has been one of staggering proportion. To increase gold production while minimizing capital requirements and providing for the safe and efficient mining and processing of ores has required a tremendous effort by the Mine Engineering group at Newmont Gold. This paper discusses the organizational changes implemented to effectively deal with a full range of engineering problems and how the Newmont Gold Mine Engineering group dealt with these problems. Specially developed computer software and their applications will be explained. Improvements in the techniques used in converting geologic resources into reserves, and in scheduling the mining of multiple pits to feed multiple processing facilities, as well as ore control procedures are presented. Current mine engineering practices are discussed.

The Cerro Matoso S.A. mine and smelter, in the Cordoba lowlands of northwestern Colombia, consist of a dedicated laterite nickel mine, ore blending, drying and an RKEF process to produce high-quality ferronickel. At a project investment of $400M, first production of ferronickel was in September 1982, and in its inaugural year CMSA produced 6,150 tons of contained Ni from a mined ore grade of 3.2% Ni. Initial operational difficulties resulted in a number of furnace run-outs, which impacted ramp up to design ore throughput of 128 dry t/h Since then CMSA has steadily incorporated process improvements and initiatives to take the single line operation to an ore throughput of 175 dry t/h. A second 175 dry t/h line was added in 2001 (investment of US$ 300M) to consolidate CMSA as one of the world's lowest cost Ni producers with an installed annual production capacity of 50-55,000 tons Ni. The most recent addition is commissioning of Phase I of an ore-upgrading project to counteract the effect of declining ore grades. Keywords: Laterite, ferronickel, pyrometallurgy, smelter.

Anglo American Platinum practices fine grinding in its processing plants to enhance the liberation of valuable minerals. If the fine particles of valuable minerals generated during fine grinding are not recovered during the flotation process, this could significantly contribute to the overall losses. This study examines the flotability of fine moncheite (PGE mineral) particles in a controlled environment (moncheite size distribution, concentration and liberation). A barren Norite ore ground to 40% and 80% passing 53µm was spiked, with four different size fractions of moncheite (-5, -10+5, -25+10 and -53+25µm) in order to evaluate the effect of particle size on flotation. The investigation also included the effect of energy input and collector dosage on the flotation of two moncheite size fractions, namely -5µm and -10+5µm. The results showed that the moncheite particle size has a significant impact on flotation. Coarse particles (-53+25µm) showed the highest Pt flotation kinetics and overall recoveries. The -5µm size fraction of moncheite could also be recovered by flotation, however, at a lower rate compared to the other size classes investigated. The increased collector dosage of 300g/t at the finer Norite grind of 80% passing 53µm enhanced the flotation rate of the -5µm size fraction of moncheite when compared to the lower collector dosage of 150g/t. The higher energy input during laboratory flotation, at an impeller speed of 1000rpm also increased the flotation rate of the -5µm size range, however, at a lower concentrate grade, when compared to the lower impeller speed of 700rpm. More favourable Pt flotation kinetics data was obtained for the -53 +25µm size fraction of moncheite at the fine Norite grind when compared to the coarse Norite grind. Pluess-Staufer (California) Inc. Lucerne Valley California operation is one of the largest producers of high brightness high purity fme grind limestone products in western North America. The San Bernardino Mountains area of southern California contains the largest high brightness, high purity limestone mining operations and undeveloped reserves in western North America (Fig. 1, Brown 1987). Combined annual production of high brightness limestone products from several operations is approximately 1.5 million tons, with an estimated gross value of $75 million dollars per year (Fig. 2). An additional 5.0 million tons of cement grade limestone is mined by several large cement producers in the nearby Mojave area (Brown, in press). The purpose of this paper is to summarize the geologic setting, genesis and mining of white, high purity crystalline limestone by Pluess-Staufer (California) Inc.

"The adoption of a significant pile testing regime, the use of Eurocode 7 as the design standard, the development of lean construction techniques, and lateral thinking in overcoming some considerable construction challenges allowed Stent Foundations to construct the foundations for the new Wembley Stadium, London, on time and within budget. In addition to the piling works for the main stadium, and after significant design development, a large number of extra piles were required to raise the new iconic roof Arch to its final position some 133 metres above the ground. A 1,400m long contiguous bored pile wall was also constructed to allow for excavation and formation of the new pitch. As long ago as the 1880's, Wembley Park leisure grounds had football pitches and running tracks.In 1918 the British Government began planning a British Empire Exhibition with a stadium as its centrepiece. The Exhibition area covered 219 acres and the area on which a former abandoned tower called Watkins Folly had stood was chosen as the site for the new stadium (http://www.wembleystadium.com).The Empire Stadium, as it was originally known, was designed by architects Sir John Simpson and Maxwell Ayerton and the engineer Sir Owen Williams. It took just 300 days to complete at a cost of £750,000 ($1.4m), and was built using 25,000 tons of ferro concrete, 1,000 tons of steel, and over half a million rivets.The Empire Exhibition was a remarkable event, containing fountains, lakes, gardens, and many pavilions, each representing the architectural style of the countries exhibiting. It was opened on 23rd April 1924 and the final attendance was over 27 million, with 4.5 million admissions to the Empire Stadium alone."

A couple of years ago, one of the major television networks produced a series on the environment. One episode in the series dealt with the nation's solid waste problem and some of the research being done to solve it. It was interesting to listen to one researcher who was attempting to develop a glass that when broken would dissolve in water. It was said that using this glass would eliminate over 100 million tons of solid wastes each year. At first glance, it would appear that this research-effort would make a significant contribution to environmental pollution control; however, if one pauses to consider the water, he can see that this solution to the solid waste problem may well contribute to a water pollution problem. The dissolved material must either end up in our surface streams or be removed in waste treatment systems. Either alternative may have a more adverse effect on the environment than the original problem. With today's emphasis on the environment, it is important that the effects of our activities be studied in depth. Then, by properly planning the activity, the adverse effects can be minimized. The coal mining industry 100 years ago was in the same boat, as our glass maker, is today. Unfortunately, it too failed to consider all the effects of its activities and as a result, in Pennsylvania, there are over 5000 miles of streams adversely affected by coal mine drainage. The situation is improving, however, because mine operators are beginning to recognize and accept the methods for controlling coal mine drainage. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the measures for the control of coal mine drainage and to set forth the factors that affect these controls.

I. INTRODUCTION. THOSE who deem the subject of this paper an old and super¬seded one may recall with advantage the words of the great proverb-maker, bidding us to seek the new in the ashes of the old. The manufacture of wrought-iron began with the small hearth built upon an eminence, and relying on the wind for blast. Next came, either the hearth about 12 in. in diameter by 2 ft. in height, blown by a man operating two goat-skins for bellows, or, a hearth of greatly varying diameter and about 10 ft. high, depending for its blast upon natural draft. The former appeared in India, the latter in Burmah; and both were in operation until quite recently, though their origin is lost in prehistoric times. The Catalan forge was the evolutionary descendant of the foregoing, and the parent of the Blase-ofen, which in turn led to the high bloomary or " Stückofen," the father of the blast-furnace, as a producer of cast-iron. The production of cast-iron checked the growth of the direct processes; and led to the introduction of various hearths, such as the Walloon, for low-silicon irons; and the South Wales process, combining the run-out fire with the finery, for higher-silicon irons. Some of these are still in operation in localities possessing the necessary raw materials; and their product is used for purposes requiring wrought-iron of exceptional quality, the supply of which is still smaller than the demand. IT is highly significant that engineers should seriously consider the interrelations of technology, economics, and government. It is indicative of the emergence of maladjustments and problems that perplex our thinking and frustrate our activities. Instead of a world in which scientific discoveries and their applications through engineering to the processes of wealth production are regarded as the royal road to progress, we now find science and engineering being made responsible, in no small degree, for our economic and social troubles; and the powers of government are even being invoked to stem the tidal wave of technology. Indeed, there is a deep-seated fear, manifested in the writings of some of our greatest scientists as well as in popular discussions, that science may destroy our civilization.
