This paper highlights the position of coal supply in regard to the requirements for electric-utility operations. The text and the appended tables outline the trend of thermal power development and fuel use in the electric-utility industry. While new jobs and taxes are major incentives for support of mining, stakeholders must also be assured that current jobs, resources and environment will be protected. Mining companies can help achieve stakeholder support by frankly addressing Acid Rock Drainage CARD) issues. To prevent ARD, miners must begin early in the mine life-cycle to develop an ARD management plan and integrate it into the mining operation. As this proactive preventative program is initiated, mining companies also need to engage and collaborate with stakeholders to insure that their expectations and needs are met. Stakeholder engagement is enhanced as mining companies emphasizes the value of clean and available water for current and future generations.

It has been established that significant time-dependent stope convergence may occur over time periods of hours and days in certain hard-rock gold and platinum mines. The source of this time-dependent behaviour appears to be associated with both pre-existing discontinuities and with mining-induced fractures that form near the stope face. These induced fractures may be associated with blasting processes and may also be formed in response to high stress concentrations in the unmined regions immediately ahead of the stope face. In shallower platinum mining operations, time-dependent behaviour is, however, observed to be much less marked unless some form of specific mining-induced fracturing occurs. One particular case of considerable interest is the time-dependent behaviour that is found to be associated with the formation and deployment of crush pillars. The purpose of the paper is to present a simple limit-equilibrium computational model of this behaviour that is sensitive to both the formation sequence and the size of planned crush pillars in a mine layout. This model provides a useful means to optimize the sizing of crush pillars, and at the same time may be used to identify potentially hazardous circumstances in which pillars may not crush in a stable manner.

This paper outlines the journey of cultural maturation and management system development at the Mt Rawdon (MRO) gold mine from its acquisition by Evolution Mining Limited (Evolution) in late 2011 to 2016.Evolution embarked upon a series of projects that aimed to improve the operational consistency and implementation of change on-site, while leveraging off the existing strengths of the operation. This document describes the gaps that were identified, the processes used to close them, and the resulting cultural change and production outcomes, with a specific focus on how to optimise the culture at any mining operation.MRO had a history of four owners in less than three years when it became a key asset of Evolution. The site leadership team (SLT) decided to influence the culture at MRO by reviewing and upgrading the existing management processes.The first priority was to improve transparency and collaboration at the SLT level, followed by improving competency in project management. The next phase was to strengthen the internal communication using a deliberately designed network of meetings, communication screens and other initiatives. Once there was some traction, the focus moved toward increasing production volume and decreasing cost per unit by improving short-term planning and execution capability. Together with other initiatives, this resulted in improved collaboration between all functions, which in turn netted over 37 per cent mining production uplift.Following solid success, a process of prioritisation and alignment management was implemented. This supported the ‘Mine to Mill one operation’ ideal and allowed the SLT to decide month-by-month what actions were to be prioritised. These priorities incorporated production realities and longer term imperatives of the balanced business plan.Much of this work was completed during a period of declining gold prices and a relentlessly strong Australian dollar, making it difficult to justify spending money on improvement projects. "A long-term mine production schedule optimization based on stochastic integer programming is presented that manages the risk due to geological variability and uncertainty while jointly considering mine profitability, truck fleet requirements and waste management. The evolution of the pit is controlled so that space within the mined-out pit is continuously provided to allow for tailings and waste rock to be replaced, thus minimizing the project’s environmental footprint. The method is applied at a taconite iron ore deposit and has a project net present value that is 16.9 percent higher than that of a conventional schedule and has a higher chance of meeting production forecasts. The stochastic schedule reduces equipment requirements by delaying waste mining and by mining selectively in order to meet plant ore feed requirements without stockpiling material, resulting in 23.7 and 26.2 percent lower mining capital and operating costs, respectively. IntroductionThe LabMag iron ore deposit is part of the Millennium Iron Range, a 210-km (130-mile) belt of taconite in northern Quebec and Labrador, Canada. LabMag has significant economic potential. It contains more than 3.3 Gt (3.6 billion st) of proven reserves at an average total iron content of 29.8 percent and is very low in impurities. However, on a project basis of 23 Mt/a (25 million stpy) of product, the required capital expenditure is estimated at more than $5 billion (SNC-Lavalin, 2014), which necessitates careful evaluation of all sources of risk. Resource estimation is one of the main sources of risk in a mining project as knowledge of the orebody is primarily based on drilling, which is often sparse because it is expensive. If the expected ore tonnages and qualities are not obtained when mining, the project cash flows are directly affected. The expected quantities and qualities of ore and waste are defined by the mine production schedule, which specifies the sequence of extraction and is dependent on the resource estimation. The goal of mine production scheduling is thus to maximize the expected profit, while also meeting all production targets and constraints, by creating an extraction schedule that is robust in the face of geological risk and has the highest chance possible of actually being realized."

"In 2005, after nearly a decade of process development and feasibility work, the commercialization of the Falconbridge Nickel Smelting Technology (NST) began in earnest with the design and construction of a grassroots ferronickel plant at Koniambo Nickel in New Caledonia. The NST process was developed as an alternative to the conventional Rotary Kiln-Electric Furnace (RKEF) process for production of ferronickel from saprolitic nickel laterite ores. The NST process promised environmental and energy efficiency advantages over the conventional route. A key step of the NST process involves fluidized bed pre-reduction of calcined laterite ore using direct injection of pulverized coal as the reductant. Two parallel fluidized bed reduction roasters (FBRs) were installed at Koniambo Nickel, each designed for a maximum capacity of 4,200 MTPD of calcined nickel laterite ore. This paper describes the process development and scale-up of the fluidized bed pre-reduction process, the design challenges associated with the prototype commercial units, and the current status of the FBR operation at Konaimbo.INTRODUCTION In the mid-1990s, Falconbridge began to develop a new flowsheet for production of ferronickel from nickel laterite ores. The process that developed came to be known as the Falconbridge Nickel Smelting Technology (NST). The flowsheet, which is particularly appropriate for saprolitic ores, involves several major unit operations, including: drying in a hammer mill-flash dryer, calcination and preheating in a flash calciner, pre-reduction in a fluidized bed reactor, and smelting in a DC arc furnace to produce the ferronickel product. This paper focuses on the fluidized bed pre-reduction step of the process and provides an overview of the process chemistry, laboratory and pilot plant development work, scale-up and commercialization of the pre-reduction step, and the results obtained in the prototype commercial units."

Soil cover systems are routinely used to reduce acid rock drainage (ARD) from mine waste rock dumps and tailings impoundments. A technology for the analysis, design, instrumentation and monitoring of barrier-type (oxygen limiting) and store/release-type covers has rapidly developed and the number of covers under construction has grown extensively during the past ten years. Mine operators are currently investing in this relatively new technology with the expectation that these covers will reduce long-term liability with respect to acid generation, drainage and treatment costs. While the design life for cover systems may extend into hundreds of years, we have less than ten years of construction experience and proven performance. Some cover designs appear to be functioning well; however, the performance of many more is now being called into question. The paper presented herein evaluates the integrity of cover systems from a global perspective. Soil cover systems for the control of ARD are being constructed at mine sites located within high rainfall equatorial regions, deserts ranging from low to high latitude, humid temperate regions, and cold-continental climates. While the technology for analysis and design of soil cover systems is well developed, factors that compromise the performance of cover systems (in addition to the paramount issue of climate) relate to material selection and availability, cost and construction practices. Long-term performance is also strongly affected by physical stability (ie erosion), volume change (ie cracking, desiccation, settlement and freeze/thaw cycling), vegetation, soil evolution and ecological stability. This paper provides a review of the application of soil cover systems for the control of ARD. Cases where cover systems have been constructed with both success and failure are illustrated. General criteria and recommendations for cover selection, design, construction, and maintenance are provided.

"INTRODUCTION The Denver region coal field, covering an area of approximately 7,640 square miles, extends from the Wyoming State line to the middle of El Paso County, Colo. The coal in this region is subbituminous in rank. Much of it is used as domestic fuel. During the last decade the production of coal in this field has remained fairly constant at an average of 2,600,000 tons per year. This production has come from 50 to 60 mines, 88 to 90 percent of the production being from the section of the field north of Denver.According to the Standard Specifications for Classification of Coal by Bank of the American Society for Testing Materials 4/ the coals in this region are classified in the Subbituminous B and C group. On the as—mined basis, they contain about 22 percent moisture and average 9,600 B.t.u. per pound. They are noncoking and slack to a variable extent when exposed to the weather. This is characteristic of subbituminous coals."

"Although South Africa possesses more than 80% of the world’s platinum reserves, its reputation for reliability in supplying platinum to global markets is under threat. This is due to the 49% decrease in output per worker (1999–2014), while the domestic costs have risen by more than 10% annually for the past 5 years. In addition, the continued decline in the commodity price by 38.3% (2012–2016) has resulted in a significant portion of the sector producing at a loss in 2015. The Chamber of Mines (now the Minerals Councilof South Africa) has suggested that solutions to improve productivity and reduce cost pressures are required. This research aims to provide operational excellence through the application of event chain project management (ECPM) to improve productivity and reduce operational costs. A case study was used to carry out research in platinum mines, with data collected using a motion-time study to measure the current efficiency of operations in each mining stope through actual activity durations. The results indicate that through the application of the event chain project management methodology, risks affecting the mining stope schedule can be managed, the efficiency of operations was improved by reducing the time spent on each activity, productivity was increased by shortening the project duration, and operational costs were reduced in the process. IntroductionSouth Africa’s total mining industry production was 4.9% lower in 2016 than in 2015; it decreased by 1.9% year-on-year in December 2016, with the main contributor to this negative trend being the platinum group metals (PGMs) with a drop of 15.1% and contributing -3.8% percentage points (Statistics South Africa, 2016). Although South Africa possesses more than 80% of the world’s platinum reserves, the 8% drop in production output since 2008 has put the platinum mining industry under the threat of being seen as an unreliable supplier to global markets. This decline in production is caused by the 49% decrease in output per worker between 1999 and 2014. In addition, the continued decline in the commodity price by 38.3% from 2012 to 2016 and an increase in operational costs during the same period resulted in a significant portion of the sector producing at a loss in 2015. A turnaround strategy is required to overcome these challenges. The Chamber of Mines has suggested, among others, the need for solutions to improve productivity and reduce cost pressures. The implementation of these solutions will ensure that the PGM industry thrives and reaches its potential of growing production to more than 322 t by 2020 (Baxter, 2016)."

A long-term production schedule for the LabMag iron ore deposit in northern Quebec, Canada is derived using stochastic integer programming. The optimisation formulation maximises the schedule’s net present value while simultaneously managing the risk of deviations in production tonnages and qualities by considering stochastic simulations of the orebody instead of a single deterministic model. The formulation also smooths and minimises haul truck requirements and ensures that as mining progresses, space is created within the mined out pit for the return of waste material.CITATION:Spleit, M, 2014. ROASTING is usually thought of as a process in which finely crushed or ground ore is heated with air in a suitable furnace in which the ore is rabbled or agitated in such a way as to insure complete reaction between the oxygen of the air and the oxidisable constituents of the ore. Roasting in this sense is used only to a very limited extent in the iron and steel industry. This is because, in most iron ore deposits mined today, the ore is of a type that does not require roasting. Where this process is used, it is usually because of some special circumstance, such as a peculiar economic condition, that warrants it. If roasting is looked upon in the broader sense as a gas-solid chemical reaction carried out at an elevated temperature in which both gaseous and solid products are formed, then the process is used in the iron and steel industry to a greater extent

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) investigated the use of seismic refraction tomography (SRT) for identifying changes in pillar loading at the Foidel Creek coal mine near Steamboat Springs, CO. The inherent three-dimensional problem of directly imaging coal pillar conditions is reduced to a single plane by considering only the load transmitted from the pillar to the adjacent floor rock. Floor strata velocity tomograms (at two pillar locations) illustrate that loading conditions are non-uniform and non-unique. Also, time sequence monitoring, as the longwall face advanced, demonstrated that SRT can be used to image spatial changes in loading conditions. SRT offers the mining engineer a simple and flexible technique for evaluating pillar conditions, and thus, both present and alternative mine designs.

Urban quarries offer one of the greatest opportunities for profit in non-metallic mining with limited financial risk IF properly evaluated, planned and developed to meet market needs. Location, with respect to market, is the prime consideration. Geologic considerations and quality of rock are nearly as important. Cost factors and return on investment (ROI) are the principal financial considerations. Risk of capital is determined by weighing all factors that should be considered and how well judgements are based on information acquired. It is a simple, true axiom of business that an investment must be founded on amount of capital required with its expected return plus profit, expertise required to operate and time involved. Urban quarries generally offer excellent stone product market opportunities. Costs of land with mineral containment and processing operations are much greater than in rural areas. Environmental problems have become increasingly severe. Competition from other quarries in the market area is usually directly proportional to the profit attractiveness. Risk of capital (initial, developmental and operational) can be evaluated and reduced only by thorough analysis of the entire situation. Time and money expended on planning and preliminary investigations probably represent the most productive investment of available company resources.

Simulation modelling is a practice commonly used in the mining industry to evaluate alternative process designs. Such modelling is typically undertaken as an optimisation study to increase the efficiencies, productivity and product quality of operating mines. In this situation, real short-term grade variability data of extracted ore are available from production records as input data into the simulation.There is also a need for simulation modelling to be performed before mines are approved for construction to clarify the grade variability characteristics that can be expected from the operating mine and assist in the optimisation of the process design. In this situation no historical short-term grade variability data are available. To achieve meaningful and reliable results from a simulation it is necessary to have input data for the ore to be extracted from the pits, representative of the short-term grade variability that would be expected for the operating mine.This paper describes an example of a path taken to generate realistic input data.A method described as composite cut-off criterion was used to distinguish ore from waste, which gave substantially greater recovered tonnage at target grade compared to the conventional quadrant cut-off grade criteria.The only data available for the project was resource model data in the form of kriged block models, which are known to underestimate true ore grade variability. To achieve realistic results from the simulation it was essential to increase this variability while maintaining the accurate average grades. Areas of certain deposits that were modelled using both kriging and conditional simulation estimation techniques were quantitatively compared to establish the comparative variance and the kriged data was modified to match the conditionally simulated variance.A realistic mining model was generated via a process of discretisation and regularisation of the resource blocks. Quantitative assessment demonstrated that this method adequately compensated for ore dilution and that adjustment for ore loss was not required due to an ore skin surrounding the edge blocks.The conditioned data was then used to generate a schedule of daily mine extraction, considering grade variability, tonnage, equipment constraints and extensive blended-in-blended-out precrusher stockpiles to feed into the process design simulations.For the precrusher stockpiles a number of alternative allocation criteria were examined for ore being extracted from the pits to identify the best method in achieving reduced variability through the daily scheduling system. The study concluded that a single analyte separation criterion produced acceptable variability with minimal complexity.The blending efficiency of manually stacked and reclaimed precrusher stockpiles was studied to determine a realistic blending efficiency within the pile. A recommended method of building and reclaiming was determined to give maximum blending efficiency.Finally, the data was used as input into process design simulation models; simulation from crusher feed to shiploading demonstrating that control of shipment grade variability was achievable and that the conditioning of the data delivered realistic results.CITATION:Jupp, K, Howard, T J and Everett, J E, 2013. Recoflo® ion exchange technology utilizes fine mesh resin beads, a fully packed resin bed, and counter-current regeneration. These unique features help to improve exchange kinetics, reduce regenerant consumption, and increase the concentration of strip solutions. Commercially, Recoflo technology has been extensively used in the following areas: the separation of strong mineral acids from dissolved metal salts, the purification, removal and recycle of dissolved metals in the surface finishing industries, and the production of high purity water. In the mining and metallurgical industries Recoflo ion exchange systems have been installed to treat a copper refinery bleed stream at Falconbridge's Kidd Creek plant and to treat a nickel and cobalt bearing ammonium sulfate effluent stream at another primary metal producer's facility. In the first application an APU® Recoflo system is used to separate the sulfuric acid at 200g/L from the dissolved copper and nickel sulfate salts at 80 g/L. The absorbed sulfuric acid is recovered from the resin by elution with water and is then returned to the refinery electrolyte circuit. In the second application a chelating ion exchange resin is used to remove nickel and cobalt at 0.01 - 3.0 g/L from process streams containing 120 - 240 g/L ammonium sulfate. This Recoflo system has been designed to reduce the nickel and cobalt levels to 0.001 - 0.002 g/L while recovering cobalt and nickel at concentrations up to 30 g/L and 15 g/L respectively. Case studies for both these metallurgical applications and other Recoflo processes are presented in this paper.

Calgary, your meeting place today, is the birthplace of this economic revolution, one that has already sharply altered the economy .of the middle half of Canada, particularly that of Alberta; is increasingly making its weight felt on the economy of all Canada; and is helping re-shape world thinking on sources of vital petroleum supply for both peace and war. Calgary is today the 'operation headquarters' for the great bulk of a huge exploration and development programme that now extends over a quarter of a million square miles of Canada's West. "Bull Mountains No. 1 mine of Signal Peak Energy made another success in its 4 Right pre-developed recovery entry on March 23 and 24, 2015, after the first successful cut-through and shield retrieval of 3 Right pre-developed longwall recovery entry in 2014[1]. Under the same geological conditions, the major difference of 4 Right and 3 Right is the 600 psi Unconfined Compressive Strength (UCS) value of light-weight concrete in 4 Right versus 800 psi in 3 Right. In addition, one more recovery chute was added in 4 Right. The unique geological conditions in this mine include: (1) the low overburden of approximately 200-260 ft, (2) prevalence of roof joints parallel to the face in the sandstone/siltstone dominated overburden, (3) proximity of the Rehder rider seam to the bench Mammoth coal seam, and (4) prompt surface subsidence with the face advancement. The 4 Right recovery entry was 42 ft wide and developed in two stages, 20 ft wide in the inby Phase I, and 22 ft wide in the outby Phase II. The entry roof was reinforced with steel wire mesh/non-metallic recovery mesh, primary bolts, and high-capacity supplemental SUMO cables. After all the support was installed, the entry was completely backfilled with specially designed, cuttable, low-density cement. It took approximately half time to easily cut through the concrete with less dust in 4 Right as compared to the concrete-cut-through time in the 3 Right. The updated study further explored the nature and mechanism of effective roof control approaches in the pre-developed recovery entry of this unique geology mine, aiming at providing the safest working environment for protecting the miners. GEOLOGICAL AND MINING CONDITIONS OF THE RECOVERY ENTRIES Bull Mountains No. 1 mine is located 30 miles north of Billings, Montana, and currently mines bituminous coal from the Mammoth coal seam. The mine employed a conventional recovery face in Panel #1 and pre-developed recovery entries in Panels #2, #3, and #4 (Figure 1). The typical mining and geological conditions are as follows:Overburden Depth The overburden above the Mammoth coal seam in the #1-#4 Right recovery areas is approximately 200-260 ft. This low cover, in combination with specific roof geological features (especially the prevalent roof joints and proximity of rider seam), constitute unique ground movement characteristics when the longwall face advances into the recovery entry if no sufficient roof support is installed."

A primary, function of the Bureau of Mines is to encourage elimination of waste and the most profitable use of mineral raw materials. In line with this objective the Bureau has frequently stressed the importance of waste utilization at stone quarries. From time to tine studies both technical and economic in character have been made of problems pertaining to the most efficient use of natural, stone, particularly that which may be classed as a by-product of the higher grades of dimension stone. Every quarry producing ornamental or building stone yields large quantities of material that for one reason or another is unsuited for high-grade products, even though a great deal of work has been expended upon it more or less unavoidably. It is obviously good judgment to sell this odd-sized or off-grade stone at whatever price can be obtained rather than to spend more money to place it on the waste dump. In many cases, however, a really profitable side line has been developed.

Pitch from low-temperature carbonization of bituminous coal was hydrogenated at cracking conditions in a continuous bench-scale unit to produce low-molecular-weight oils and tar acids. The pitch contained 15.6 pct benzene-insoluble material, 4.0 pct hexane-soluble oil, and 80.4 pct asphaltene by weight. At 475° C, 7,500 psig, and 1.5 hours residence time, hydrogenation products, based on the weight of pitch, were about 36 pct oil boiling below 325° C, 24 pct hexane-soluble heavy oil, 17 pct asphaltene, 1 pct benzene insolubles, and 12 pct hydrocarbon gases. The yield of tar acids boiling below 250° C was 4.3 pct, and the yields of C6 to C8 paraffins, naphthenes, and aromatics were each less than 1.0 pct. The yield of tar acids was within the range of yields obtained by hydrogenation or high-temperature carbonization of bituminous coal (2 to 5 wt pct). Yields of oil boiling below 325° C increased with increased residence time or temperature. There was little or no effect of residence time on yields of alkali- soluble material which contained tar acids. Yields of hydro-carbon gases increased markedly with an increase in temperature from 475° to 500° C. Lowering the hydrogen pressure to 4,500 psig resulted in yields similar to those obtained at 7,500 psig.

"NioCorp is developing the niobium/scandium/titanium Elk Creek carbonatite resource deposit. The carbonatite phase contains significant niobium (0.71% Nb2O5), titanium (2.68% TiO2) and scandium (72 g/t) and is composed predominantly of calcite, dolomite and ankerite. Niobium is mostly (80%) contained in the pyrochlore and the balance in various Fe-Nb-Ti oxides, which also host most of the titanium. Scandium is distributed homogeneously throughout the ore mineral assemblage. The process flowsheet recovers separate niobium, titanium and scandium products. Scandium is extracted from whole ore hydrochloric acid leach solutions through solvent extraction, and is further refined through a re-leach and precipitation process. Scandium leach residues are treated with sulphuric acid to recover separate niobium and titanium precipitates. Both hydrochloric acid and sulphuric acid reagents are recycled within the flowsheet. This paper will discuss key bench and pilot test results (focusing on the scandium flowsheet) and will present a conceptual flowsheet developed by the project team for NioCorp at SGS Minerals.INTRODUCTION NioCorp is developing North America's only niobium/scandium/titanium project. The Elk Creek project is located near Elk Creek, Nebraska, and is the highest grade niobium project in North America and the largest prospective producer of scandium in the world. These elements are unique and valuable superalloy materials that are strategic and critical to many industries and national defense technologies. The project includes the Elk Creek Carbonatite (the Carbonatite) that intruded older Precambrian granitic and low to medium grade metamorphic basement rocks. Both the carbonatite and Precambrian rocks are interpreted to be unconformably overlain by approximately 200 meters (m) of Paleozoic marine sedimentary rocks of Pennsylvanian age. As a result of this thick cover, there is no surface outcrop within the Project area of the carbonatite, which was identified and targeted through magnetic surveys and confirmed through subsequent drilling. The available magnetic data indicate dominant northeast, west-northwest striking lineaments, and secondary northwest and north oriented features that mimic the position of regional faults parallel and/or perpendicular to the Nemaha Uplift."
