The paper addresses five questions concerning the economic of gold exploration in the western Canadian shield. Can historical footprints be used to project future gold prices for exploration planning? Experience suggests that gold price forecast are too clo ely tied to current market events to provide meaningful guidelines. What range of breakeven gold price will typically be required to ju tify gold exploration in Canada? Minimum price requirements. initially asses ed at $540 to $1080 per ounce, probably lie in the range of $480 to $760 per ounce (expressed in 1985 Canadian dollar). Within Canada, what role do regional conditions and taxation policies play in determining the viability of prospective gold exploration targets? Striking interprovincial differences are found to exist, given the same geological circum tance -Nova Scotia, ew Brunswick, and Quebec rank towards the top in term of motivating exploration, Briti h Columbia provides the least investment incentive, while Saskatchewan and Manitoba place around the middle of the Canadian league. How can minimum acceptable tonnage-grade conditions for gold targets in the western shield be established and, then, constructively applied to provide exploration planning guidelines? Minimum target conditions, realis tically defined in terms of a broad band of doubt, can be used judiciously to help balance the direct costs of uneconomic exploration with the opportunity costs associated with rejecting economic deposits. How does the average cost per ounce of gold discovered in the western shield compare with the overall Canadian experience? Average discovery costs for the we tern shield, apprai ed at $100 per ounce, are shown to compare favourably with the Canada-wide record.

A common casualty of modern open-pit mine optimization is the assurance that the resulting design is actually achievable. Optimized mine plans that consider value and a bare minimum of precedence constraints do not, in general, translate into practical, operational mine designs that can be used in the field. Ultimate pits may come to a sharp point at the bottom. Schedules may require taking small parcels of material from many disparate areas of the pit in a single period, and grade control polygons may be ragged, narrow, and not minable with realistic equipment. In this paper, all of these problems are addressed by encoding these three fundamental open-pit mine optimization problems as maximum satisfiability problems. Maximum satisfiability provides a useful framework for problems that are non-linear and may guarantee the optimality that metaheuristics cannot.

Evaluation and measurement of the influence of changes in conditions and electrolyte composition during early stages of a growing metal electrodeposit are crucial to predict changes in developing morphology. A galvanodynamic polarization technique was developed to reliably measure overpotentials for nickel electrodeposition from sulfate electrolyte. The validity of these polarization parameters as indicators of the relationships between changes in the electrolyte and resulting deposit morphology was evaluated for electrolytes of varying composition. Findings indicate that nucleation and plating overpotentials measured by the described technique can be used as indicative tools for monitoring, evaluating and ultimately improving control of the electrodeposition of nickel from sulfate electrolytes. The results predict that nickel deposits of desirable quality and morphology are obtained when plating overpotentials are higher than 700 mV vs. Ag/AgCl and nucleation overpotential is less negative than plating overpotential.

TAKING into consideration the present state of geologic knowledge and present economic status of the oil industry, we have attempted to outline the six principal districts in which oil occurs and new pools may be expected. The map, Fig. 1, also shows the location of the present productive pools-about 100 in number. The unshaded areas represent territory where drilling depths to known sands are prohibitive with present development and pumping methods, or such sands are absent or give promise of such small production that deep wildcat tests are unwarranted. They include, also, territory where the oil-source materials are absent or not of the right type; and where shales are insufficient in the stratigraphic section to prevent the escape of oil and gas. Some doubtful districts are also included, such as the Pecos Valley, where the percentage of rigid beds, sandstones and limestones may be too great; and the Nacogdoches oil field, where small shallow production is obtained but where deep or large production is unlikely. The map is not offered as final but in the hope that it may prevent the expenditure of large sums in attempted development of unlikely territory and as the warning that those who drill in the unshaded territory do so at great risk. Those who drill in such territory should have large sums available for pioneering and experimenting and only attempt it if they can well afford to lose the money expended. Search in the shaded or cross-hatched areas is hazardous enough and should only be undertaken after detailed geologic surveys. Out of a total area of 256,000 sq. mi., the oil and gas districts comprise about 80,000 sq. mi.; the territory embraced in these districts is shown in the shaded portions. This may ultimately be increased somewhat by the addition of some minor districts, but such additions will be offset by territory probably now included in the unshaded areas. The shaded areas probably contain 98 per cent. or more of the ultimate production of the state, despite the fact that they represent only 31 per cent. of the total area.

TheRe are many factors which control the ultimate production of oil and gas from a producing formation and the rate at which this production is obtained from any of the producing wells in the formation. The most important of these, and the one over which the greatest control can be exercised, is the differential pressure existing between the formation and the well bore. In producing any well by means of the gas-lift, it may be possible to change the flow tubing in a number of ways or vary the volume of circulating gas or air used for flowing the well, but if these operations, regardless of their magnitude, do not change the differential pressure between the producing sand and the well bore, they will in no way change the production of the well. If this statement is accepted as a fact, then all gas-lift or air-lift installations should be designed with but one object in view; namely, a means by which we can economically control very wide ranges of differential pressures between the formation and the well bore. Factors of Production In gas-lift production from any given formation, there are four major factors which govern the magnitude of the differential: (I) the depth of the well; (2) type and size of flow tubing; (3) volume of the circulating air or gas, and (4) physical properties of the oil-gas mixture after it has reached the well. The first of these factors is uncontrollable and does not vary. The other three are controllable within certain limits. The degree to which the last three factors can be controlled will cntircly govern the length of life of the well while on the lift, the lifting cost, and the daily production. It will also govern to some extent the ultimate production from the wells or leases producing by this method. These four factors will be discussed in detail in another part of this paper. Before proceeding further, a review of the present general practice in Texas, elsewhere than in the Gulf Coast region, will be given.

The object of all classification is to group together things which are alike, and separate those which are unlike. This object is essentially a practical one, enabling us to apply past experience to new conditions. Many costly large-scale experiments lose half their importance for want of proper description of the coal used, and the consequent impossibility of predicting that other coals will behave in the same way. I do not, therefore, make a fundamental distinction between "scientific'' and "use" classifications, except in so far as use depends on conditions, such as size or impurities which are not related to the nature of the coal substance itself. The characters chosen to define the classes of coal must be such as are accompanied by as many other properties as possible. It is not to be expected that any system of classification will enable us to predict every property of coal, since all specimens have an individuality of their own. But specimens can be grouped by a number of resemblances into species. Further, species which resemble each other can be grouped into genera. Elementary Composition as a Basis of Classification There can be little doubt that the ultimate or elementary composition of "pure coal" is the best basis of classification. It was soon after the perfection of the method of elementary analysis of organic substances by Liebig that Regnault, the distinguished chemist and physicist, laid down the principle that coals of the same kind vary only between narrow limits of elementary composition. This is still the widest generalization that can be made about coal. Upon it the metallurgist Gruner based his classification. In some quarters the value of the ultimate composition was denied, Stein going so far as to say that it teaches us nothing of importance about coal. One still hears statements that it is like crushing a work of art in a mortar and analyzing the powder, or like counting the number of times a given letter occurs in a sentence. The Role of the Operator The ultimate objective of any installation is to be able to accomplish the useful work that it was originally designed for. The operator needs a tool that he can both operate effectively and maintain efficiently. The overall design and subsequent installation of a comminution circuit should be a marriage of good engineering practice and practicality. Since the operator must operate and maintain his equipment, his input into the design and installation is vital to its ultimate success. The design of a crushing or grinding circuit is dependent upon many factors including flowsheet design, equipment selection, physical layout, space restrictions, climatic restrictions and considerations for future expansion. The operator must live on a day-to-day basis with the results of the final design and installation. The most satisfactory operation will result when the operator has a major input into each of the criteria that are used to define the final design and installation. The operator referred to is not only the mining company or organization that is having the installation built for its specific use but, more specifically, the person or persons that will actually be responsible for its daily operation and maintenance. Future references to the "operator" will include those individuals with that daily reponsibility. The operator's input into the installation of the circuit is of equal importance to his input into the design. The engineering organization which puts together all of the various design drawings for circuit installation is generally restricted to trying to get all of the details onto a multitude of 24" x 36" two dimensional drawings with a few isometric drawings thrown in. It's almost impossible to get all of the details of a final installation onto all of the drawings, and field modifications are necessary to make everything fit properly. In a multilevel installation, such as a grinding or crushing circuit, it is difficult to envision space requirements to adequately operate and maintain the various pieces of equipment simply by looking at a set o£ drawings. For some designs it is helpful to build a scale model so that a more realistic view of what the installation will look like can be seen. In recent years, there has been a heightened interest in the hydrometallurgical processing of sulfide ores and concentrates (especially copper sulfide ores and concentrates) mostly in the USA and Chile. Currently, hydrometallurgical operations account for about 30% of the primary copper production. In the present research, the leaching phenomena of IOCG (iron-oxide hosted copper-gold) ores and concentrates were studied. The IOCG ore, which is characterized as having a predominant amount of magnetite with fine chalcopyrite, is currently the center of attention for new copper resources. Heap leaching of IOCG ore is desirable because of its low cost. However, the leaching characteristics of the ores and concentrates and the mechanisms of copper leaching require investigation. This study defines the factors, which affect the leaching operation, such as the ORP, pH and oxidizing agents. Based on these results, the optimal leaching conditions are provided for pilot column leaching test and ultimately, commercial operations.

Virtually from the date of its discovery in December 1928 the Oklahoma City oil and gas field, Oklahoma County, Okla., has attracted national and international attention. The history of the field has been associated closely with rules and regulations pertaining to production control and proration practices. Early development was rapid, and Oklahoma City soon attained the distinction of being the first major field in which the producing wells were over a mile in depth. Before the structural features of the reservoir had been disclosed every outpost well was considered a "wildcat", so complex appeared the underground geology, The wells not only were deep and the reservoir pressures high, but the production from the early wells was a high A.P.I. gravity oil, accompanied by large volumes of gas. Several "blow-outs" and fired occurred during the early development, and the close proximity of these now unusual events to a large city gave the field much publicity, both local and national. Later, when its production threatened to demoralize the market for oil and its products, the Oklahoma City field again attracted wide publicity. The then little understood geology of the underground reservoir and the diversity of ownership of the land overlying the producing structure made orderly development and production difficult to enforce. Proration was enforced with difficulty., and the, rate of production from the field continued to increase until, on August 4, 1931, martial law was declared in all prorated fields of the State, and most of the wells in the Oklahoma City field wore shut n. On October 9, 1931, permission was granted t o reopen and prod e the wells in the Oklahoma City field. The order permitting production of the wells provided that during the period beginning October 10 and extending to October 20, 1931, all wells in the field that hid not produced more oil than specified under the earlier proration orders and that had been shut in for the required 55-day period were permitted to produce 5 percent of their last potential during that 10-day period. On November 7, 1931, the Corporation Commission of Oklahoma issued an order which divided the Oklahoma City field into the Wilcox, Arbuckle, and Lower Simpson zones for proration purposes. Wells producing from the Wilcox zone were allowed to produce 4 1/2 percent of their potential5/ from November 1, 1931, to January 1, 1932; Arbuckle limestone wells were allowed to produce 250 barrels of oil daily; and Simpson sandstone wells which had a potential of over 2,000 barrels per day or which made 3 percent or more water were allowed to produce 200 barrels of oil per day.

Pressure control of oil wells may be defined as the adjustment of pressures within a well to obtain the most efficient and economic utilization of the natural gas energy with a minimum of sand troubles or irregular water encroachment. The purpose of this paper is to present the methods used by the writers in applying pressure control and a discussion of the various effects occurring within the wells affected. The benefits to be derived from the conservation of natural gas energy have been so adequately discussed and demonstrated in prior papers by various engineers that the effects on ultimate production will not be discussed other than to mention a few representative cases. The detrimental effects of irregular edge-water encroachment and of sanding up arc of general knowledge to the industry. Effect on Ultimate Production One of the strongest objections voiced against pressure control is that of the danger or inadvisability of deferring oil production by cutting the rate of production. It has been our experience that such deferred product'ion is returned within a few weeks or months rather than years and that an increased cumulative oil production is obtained in the early life of the well by conserving the natural energy. In many cases the rate of production is increased rather than decreased by the adjustment of pressures to obtain the minimum gas factor. Fig. 1 shows the history of a Wilcox sand well in northern Oklahoma, which was pressure-controlled from completion. It is noted that during the early months while flowing naturally through the casing the gas factor was decreased rather than allowed to follow its natural tendency to increase. A string of 21/2-in. tubing was run to restrict the flow and resulted in a decreased gas factor with a more sustained rate of production. When first placed on gas-lift the gas factor again tended to increase, but after the proper pressure adjustments were made, remained approximately steady. How to interpret the composition of rocks has been a question which has caused a great deal of discussion and investigation among geologists and chemists. It is evident that that analysis will give the clearest results, which will give the relative proportion of the different minerals composing the rock as well as the weight of their different constituents. This, however, is a very difficult matter, and in those rocks which seem to the naked eye entirely compact, like obsidian and other rocks of that class, appears to be impossible. Cordier, in the early part of the century, invented a process which is known as the " mechanical analysis of rocks," which is really a method of mechanical preparation, and consists in crushing the rock to a certain fineness, and then, by virtue of their density, washing out the different minerals, so as to make a mineralogical analysis, separating completely the different constituents of the rocks. In the hands of so skilful a man, this was a comparatively easy matter, and Cordier found no difficulty in ascertaining the mineralogical composition of a rock. The ultimate chemical composition was ascertained from the sum of the elements contained in the different materials. In the light of to-day, it is very easy to see that the complete chemical analysis of the rock does not necessarily lead to the explanation of its character. It has been so difficult, however, to have any other kind of analysis made that most chemical examinations have been made as ultimate, and not as mineralogical analyses. The panning out of the different minerals composing the rock, which are often very nearly of the same specific gravity, is so difficult that a person of ordinary mechanical skill is scarcely able to do it; consequently the mechanical analysis which Cordier proposed, and was able himself so skilfully to effect, has never been practiced to any extent. A school was formed in France consisting of a very small number of Cordier's followers, which, in face of the difficulty of acquiring the method, very soon died out as a school, though some of his most skilful followers are still living. Solid EnergyÆs project evaluation process utilises a standard staged gate approach, with five levels leading ultimately to project execution (level 6). For a project to progress through each level, specific financial criteria need to be satisfied. Solid Energy primarily use value based (discounted cash flow) metrics to support investment decisions. Within this approach Solid Energy utilise a number risk-based techniques to quantify project uncertainty. This includes the use of risk-based probabilistic analysis using Monte Carlo simulation and probability-based scenario analysis. Figure 1 shows the net present value (NPV) cumulative probability. Project risks are identified through comprehensive risk workshops. The output of these workshops (list of key risks, ranges of uncertainty and probability of occurrence), is quantified within the financial models. Incorporating this risk information on a probabilistic basis allows an investment decision to be made with a robust knowledge of the range of possible project outcomes along with the likelihood (probability) of those outcomes occurring, for example 80 per cent confidence that the project value will be greater than NZ$10 M, 50 per cent confident it will be greater than NZ$50 M and ten per cent confident it will be greater than NZ$70 M. Incorporating risk implicitly into the financial analysis allows the business to easily evaluate/measure projects with different risk profiles. The detailed risk analysis does away with the complexity of arbitrary risk-based hurdle (discount) rates, as projects can be evaluated based on their specific risk characteristics. Whether a project will progress to the next level of investment and ultimately into implementation depends firstly on the value assessment in comparison with the associated risk/uncertainty, and secondly matching this with the businesses appetite for risk. At Solid Energy standard criteria are used for specific project evaluations, but in addition projects are considered on a portfolio or strategic basis also. Solid Energy attempts to maintain a mix of low risk (low value) projects with some high risk (high value) opportunities. The mix of projects must remain in line with the shareholdersÆ risk appetite. One of the keys to a successful investment decision is ensuring that the appropriate information is available to decision-makers so that they may proceed with a comprehensive understanding of the risks and impacts associated with the decision.

ThE Youngstown Sheet & Tube Co. has produced a large tonnage of 0.35 to 0.45 carbon forging steel, the acceptance of which was based on the physical properties of test specimens obtained by forging the original 5 3/4-in. (14.5 cm.) square bloom to a 3/4-in. (1.9 cm.) round. Annealed and tempered specimens were required. The test bars were annealed by heating from 900" to 950' C. and cooling slowly in mica. The test bars were tempered by heating to 825' to 875" C., quenching in water, and drawing to 515" to 535" C. Immediately after heat treatment, the test pieces were machined to a diameter of 0.534 in. (1.38 cm.) and tested. Very good physical properties were obtained and no difficulty was experienced in meeting the specifications called for. UlTimate Strength.. Elongation, Lb. pER Sq. In. PEE Cent.. in 4 In. The method of testing this material required that test blooms be either normalized or annealed. The normalizing consisted in heating to 850" to 900" C. and cooling in still air; the annealing, in heating to 850" to 900" C. and cooling in the furnace or in mica. From the treated bloom, the test pieces were taken either by core drilling or by sawing from points midway between the edges and the intersection of the diagonals. The cores or blocks were turned to a standard 2-in. test piece with a diameter of 0.564 in. and tested without further treatment. The physical requirements of the test pieces were: yield point, pounds per square inch minimum, 44,800; ultimate strength, pounds per square inch, 89,600 to 112,000; elongation, per cent. in 2 in. not less than 17. Difficulty was encountered as soon as work on this material was started. Many precautions and refinements were instituted but it was found very difficult to secure the required elongation.

Prior to the actual development of an oil property it is difficult to determine the quantity of oil under the property and the rate at which this oil can be brought to the surface-factors that determine the ultimate value of the property. Consequently, there has been much confusion in devising accounting systems that, during the entire life of a property, will show costs and profits from which the producer can determine whether his property is being worked at a profit or otherwise. The Bureau of Mines publishes this report in recognition of a distinct need for a simple treatise on accounting methods adapted to the peculiarities of the petroleum industry. Probably many companies operating oil wells are not fully acquainted with details important to the welfare of their business, because their account books fail to furnish them with exact and adequate data. With the accountant rests the responsibility of providing the management with reports setting forth the details of the business expressed in fitting terms as well as in dollars and cents. These reports are a means whereby efficiency may be maintained, waste prevented, oil obtained and sold, and money suitably reinvested. They also enable a concern to study the progress of its business in order to conserve to the utmost the possible benefits from an exhaustible deposit of mineral wealth. When managements realize the extent of the waste at their properties more attention will be given to the character of the accountancy records. Herein are presented descriptions and discussions of balance sheets, profit-and-loss statements, and bookkeeping methods peculiarly adapted to the oil business. As far as possible, technical phrases have been omitted in order that those not familiar with accounting terms may be able to follow the subject matter. The systems of keeping books outlined in Chapter X have all been found practical. For brevity as well as clearness the major part of the work refers to the company operating only one property.

"Pb-based alloys with Pr and Ag were prepared in vacuum electromagnetic induction furnace. The tensile strength, corrosion rate and anodic potential in sulfate solution were measured, and the experimental data were analyzed according to the metallographic phases of alloys, the micromorphology and composition of their oxide films. The results show that, with the addition of Pr, the ultimate tensile strength and corrosion rate of pure lead were increased, and the anodic potential decreased. The extra addition of Ag can improve the properties of alloy further. Comparing with Pb-Ag0.8 alloy which is widely used in zinc electrowinning industry, the ultimate tensile strength of Pb-Ag0.6-Pr2.0 alloy was increased by 31.75%, the anodic potential under 50mA/cm2 was decreased by 30m V.IntroductionIn zinc electrowinning industry, the Pb-Ag (0.5-1.0 wt.%, 0.8wt.% normally) anode is widely used as an insoluble anode['l. It can meet the basic requirements, but still has several problems such as high oxygen evolution over-potential (about 860mV), unsatisfactory corrosion resistance, lead contamination of the cathode product and high consumption of Ag etc.In order to reduce the energy consumption, enhance the corrosion resistance, improve the product quality and reduce the consumption of Ag (or even dispense with it), much research has been done, mainly focusing on Pb-based alloy anodes and Ti-based coated anodes. Detailed investigations have already been carried out on binary alloys (Pb-Ca and Pb-Co), ternary alloys (Pb-Ag-Ca, Pb-Ag-Ti, Pb-Ag-Sn, Pb-Sr-Sn, and Pb-Ca-Sn) and quaternary alloys (Pb-Ca-Sr-Ag, Pb-Ca-Ce-Ag, and Pb-Ag-Sn-Co)[Z-4l, Although these anodes can effectively reduce the consumption of Ag, only the Pb-Co and Pb-Ag-Sn-Co anodes perform well with regard to reducing the anodic potential. However, their complicated manufacturing conditions restrict further commercial use.Besides its application in nonferrous metal electro-winning industry, Pb-based alloy is also used as grid alloy for lead-acid battery, serving as active materials supporter and current collector. In order to enhance the corrosion resistance and deep-cycling performance, reduce the impedance of the corrosion film, the addition of appropriate rare earth elements into anodic grid alloys has become a research focus. Studies proved that RE can enhance the mechanical strength of grids, inhibit the formation of anodic Pb(II) film on the surface of grids and then reduce the impedance of the film[ 10-12l."

The modem open pit-heap leach operation by Pegasus Gold Ltd. at Zortman and Landusky in Phillips County, Montana, is a new chapter in the mining of gold in these districts. The discovery of bulk tonnage ore bodies and their development and ultimate production was based on a long history of mining and exploration in that part of Montana. Gold was originally discovered in the Little Rocky Mountains as placer deposits by Pike Landusky and Lou Myers. This discovery in the 1880s was not significant, but Pike Landusky continued prospecting for lode deposits, and he eventually located the Gold Bug and Little Ben, two of the larger Au-Ag producers in the district. Eventually two camps, Landusky and Zortman, grew in the LittleRocky Mountains. By the time Landusky was killed in 1894 by Kid Curry, the district was still a discontinuous small producer. Steady production commenced in 1907 with the organization of the August Gold Mining Co. Eventually high grade ores on specific veins were exhausted by selective underground mining and the district was idle by May 1942. After World War II in the early 1950s. E.A. Scholz tried to continue selective underground mining, but he realized the stockworks surrounding the larger veins constituted bulk tonnage targets. Ultimately in the 1976- 1979 period he organized two exploration efforts, one each for the Landusky and Zortman areas, and brought these into production as the Argo and Pegasus gold mines. By the time of his death, Apr. 8, 1980, both operations were producing gold. Later the two companies were merged as Pegasus Gold Ltd. Upon the death of Scholz, V.F. Hollister continued as the geological consultant, Ed Roper was engaged as general manager, and J. J. Crowhurst was given the responsibility of executive vice president. The discovery of open pittable ores and the application of heap leach technology was important in the development of mining. Both contributed to the low cost operation that continues to this day. The attached article by L.M. Rogers, then chief geologist, and M.S. Enders, his assistant, describes the geology of the deposit. It was presented at the Northwest Mining Association meeting in 1982.

Middle and Late Cenozoic fluvial conglomerates and gravel in northeastern Southland record the transport of alluvial gold from Central Otago into Southland, and subsequent reworking and concentration of this gold into economic placer deposits. A corridor of geochemically distinctive, Hg-free gold derived ultimately from veins in Torlesse Terrane schist in Otago extends through the Caples Terrane and into Southland. The initial repository in Southland was fluvial sediment of the East Southland Group, specifically weakly auriferous, quartzose delta plain strata of the Gore Lignite Measures (GLM), a downstream equivalent of Dunstan Formation in Central Otago. Miocene uplift along the northwest trending Old Man Range beheaded the parent river system, isolating GLM from its Central Otago source area and establishing the proto-Waikaia River system. Rising topography between Otago and Southland increased fluvial gradients, and initiated erosion of cover strata and a sequence of tectonically induced gold recycling events. Auriferous GLM were recycled from the hinterland into broad braided fluvial channel and floodplain deposits of the Waikaia Group (new), specifically the highly auriferous Waikaka Quartz Gravels and equivalent Waimumu Quartz Gravels downstream (WQG), superimposing more proximal depositional environments over parts of the former GLM delta plain. WQG were deformed, and locally cannibalised during the later stages of their deposition by reverse movement on north-northeast trending faults of the Dunsdale System (NW side up). Increased tempo of uplift in the hinterland (Old Man, Garvie, Umbrella, and Blue Mountain Ranges) in the Pliocene and early Quaternary resulted in further reworking of GLM and WkQG from the hinterland as well as basement erosion. Progressively more basement-rich detritus was deposited as a locally auriferous piedmont (Gore Piedmont Gravels - GPG) over earlier channel and delta plain (GLM, WQG) strata, extending from the Blue Mountains to Waikaia, and southward through the Gore Gap to beyond Mataura. Southward propagation of the north-northeast trending ranges, local warping, and uplift of the Murihiku Terrane in Pliocene and Quaternary progressively deflected GPG fluvial systems and ultimately constrained them to the present valleys. Pre-existing auriferous strata (GLM, WQG, GPG) were reworked and deposited with or without basement detritus as these fluvial systems migrated toward their present positions. Auriferous remnants of these transitional deposits are preserved in local structural depressions on the uplifted blocks that deflected the systems (eg King Solomon Mine), and on locally abandoned floodplain segments on the lowlands (Pebbly Hills-Gore Gap). The present drainage has continued to incise and cannibalise its own and earlier deposits during late Pleistocene-Recent uplift to form confined channel placers within the present valleys.
