Very encouraging progress has been made ill the develop-ment of the permanent-type well completion which decreases considerable the cost of completions and workovers and aid-in the acquisition of reliable reservoir information at low cost. Completion and remedial operations are performed with tool,; which pass through the well tubing. Perforating and plug-hack operations can be done with the tubing in place and do not require pipe-handling equipment. Because of the many advantages afforded by this method, development work is going forward in anticipation of ultimately being able 10 use it to perform all usual well completion and workover operations. Effort is also being directed to the development of a more permanent type of lift equipment suitable for use with the permanent-type well completion. INTRODUCTION The permanent-type well completion in one in which the tubing and well-head are set in place only once in the life of the well and the completion or remedial work is performed through the tubing with a tubing-type perforator. a retrievable tubing extension. and other wire-line tools. Those items attendant to the use of pipe-handling equipment and mud. such as hoard matting rig substructure. and pits. were also eliminated. There are indications that the elimination of drilling mud during completion and workover operations will frequently give increased well productivity, as plugging of the perforation. will not occur. It ii now possible to perforate selectively small sections of the producing interval and to test a well through these sections prior to perforating more interval. The perforating of additional interval will not entail the costly operations of killing the well and pulling tubing, nor will the old or the new perforations be plugged. The productivity of .mall sections of a reservoir and the actual gas-oil or oil-water contacts may now be determined economically under flowing condition.. Selective completions can be made in this manner to delay gas and water problems and bring about maximum oil recovery. At the present time, gas lift appears to offer the greatest potentialities for artificial lift in the permanent-type well com"letion since it can provide full-open tubing to accommodate the through-the-tubing tools and it may be ultimately developed into a fairly permanent type of lift. The beach at the resort city of Virginia Beach, Virginia has been and increasingly will be dependent upon artificial nourishment for maintenance and for hurricane protection. Both existing base-level maintenance operations and planned substantial enhancement programs out strip the capabilities of traditional terrestrial resources to provide the required quantities of sand. Our research program, an amalgam of projects from several funding sources, has located and defined suitable quantities of beach quality sand for use on the city's beaches. The work also has furthered our understanding of the region's Quaternary history. Initially, reconnaissance level, high-resolution, sub-bottom profiles and surficial grab samples taken on the basis of sub- marine geomorphology identified two geographically and geologically separate areas worthy of further exploration. Further profiling supplemented with some cores further defined the potential sand reserves. The Sandbridge Shoal site is a large and discrete Holocene sandbody atop late Pleistocene strata. The sands in region offshore of the commercial area known as the Resort Strip appear to be recent fill within fluvial(?) channels cut into the older subsurface. Each of these resources is within roughly 5 km of major sites targeted for beach nourishment and/or hurricane protection and contains sand with appropriate geotechnical properties. Ongoing work will better define the dimensions and limits of the sand bodies and provide data to enable determinations to be made concerning exploitation. Ultimately decisions concerning the overall beach enhancement-hurricane protection projects will involve economic, environmental, technical, and social considerations.

Within New Zealand?s extended EEZ there exists a vast submarine hydrothermal mineral resource associated with the Kermadec intra-oceanic arc. Along this arc more than thirty submarine volcanoes have been explored by GNS-lead researchers and, of these, c. 60% are known to be hydrothermally active and a site of active seafloor mineralisation. Assessment of whether this mineralisation is economically viable in terms of grade and tonnage is now underway. A key aspect of these investigations is determining the age of the mineralization which will have a direct bearing on its mode of formation, the time elapsed to amass an economic deposit and, ultimately, its capacity for sustainable extraction. Intact barite-rich ?black-smoker? chimneys similar to that depicted here (86 cm long) have been recovered from Brothers volcano in the southern part of the arc. These and other hydrothermal deposits provide evidence of active volcanic massive sulphide (VMS) mineralisation along the arc, the age of which can be determined from the disequilibrium between isotopes within the thorium or uranium decay chains. A chimney from Mariana arc has also been dated using these radiometric methods. The principle dating technique for chimneys up to 15,000 years old uses the decrease in 226Ra/Ba due to radioactive decay after the VMS was deposited. An initial ratio is obtained from chimneys that are proven to be less than 100 years old and this involves dating with 210Pb, 228Ra and 228Th that have short half-lives compared with 226Ra.

The request for proposal from the U.S. Bureau of Mines outlined the purpose of this study in the following terms. "High grade near surface deposits are largely a matter of history. Most of the current mineral production in the united States is from large low grade ore deposits mined by large scale methods. It appears likely that exhaustion of near surface deposits and public resistance to open pit mining will tend to reverse the present trend toward open pit mining and lead to increased reliance on large scale underground mining. In view of the long lead time needed to improve basic technology, an in-depth study of the major underground mining methods is needed. "This study is intended to provide a systematic review and analysis of large scale non-coal underground mining technology with particular emphasis on current practices and problems, needed technological improvements, existing or potential environmental conflicts, and possible modifications or innovations that will assist in the satisfaction of projected national mineral supply requirements."

This paper presents a discussion of the pressure maintenance operations which were begun in the New Hope Field. Franklin County. Texas. in 1944. The project has required the injection of extraneous waters at depths from 7.300 to 8.000 ft with intake well-head pressures up to 4.000 psi in three different reservoirs — the Bacon. Hill. and Pittsburg. Records of oil and water production. water injection and the GOR have been kept for each reservoir and reservoir pressures were taken at regular intervals. These data indicate that the Bacon Reservoir had no apparent water encroachment up to the time of water injection. However. the Pittsburg and Hill reservoirs had some natural water influx hut not sufficient to prevent pressures from declining below the bubble point. The Bacon and Hill reservoirs responded almost immediately to water injection. while the Pittsburg which is the least permeable. has shown good pressure response only since .August, 1948. The principle objective of the project has been to increase ultimate recovery. Success of the project to date also has resulted in reduced lifting costs. Esti- mates based on the initial water breakthrough patterns indicate that the primary objective of substantial additional recovery will he accomplished, and there is a possibility that the original estimates elf oil recovery with pres-sure maintenance will he exceeded. INTRODUCTION This pressure maintenance project was one of the earliest primary pressure maintenance programs to he attempted on a multiple zone field. There are three producing reservoirs into which water is being injected for the purpose of maintaining pressure and increasing the ultimate recovery- from each. This paper is limited in scope to al1 account of the development of the project. the pressure production relationship prior to the injection of water and the effect of water injection on the producing reservoirs. Also discussed are the nature of the injection system and the indicated results on initial water break-through in the Bacon Reservoir. FIELD CONDITIONS The New Hope Field, which is located about 12 miles northeast of Winusboro, Franklin County, Texas, is an elongated symmetrical anticline containing four known oil reservoirs. The reservoirs are of the Trinity group of the Comanchean or Lower Cretaceous period and are found in Table I. The oil productive portion of each reservoir is not present in all of the producing wells because their areas and positions vary with respect to one another. Fig. 1 shows the relative position of the four reservoirs and illusIrate? how some wells could penetrate all four, while others are restricted to three. two. or perhaps one. depending on structural location. The first three reservoirs contain undersaturated oil. The deepest. the Elledge, has a primary gas cap. Although this reservoir covers a considerable area of the field. it has a very thin section and a low order of permeability. Elledge producing wells have generally been characterized by an early increase in GOR, making it necessary to recomplete them in other reservoirs. (At present. one well is completed in the Elledge. which is still producing.) Because of the difficulties en-countered in producing oil from this reservoir. and the small quantity of oil actually present. future attempts at producing it will probably be on a salvage basis during the later life of the program. For this reason, the remainder of this report will be confined to a discussion of the Bacon, Hill and pius-burg reservoirs.

Alfred Stansfield, Montreal, Canada:—In Professor Howe's paper on the position of Ae3, he shows its industrial importance in determining the temperature to which steel should be heated for " grain refining." Several years ago I carried out a research on the " burning " of steel and found that while hypo-eutectoid steel should be heated to Ae3, hyper-eutectoid steel that has been very much overheated must be reheated to the curve Sa on the carbon-iron diagram, in order to redissolve the pro-eutectoid cementite and thus to obtain recrystallization and grain-refining. This treatment was necessarily only partly successful, and I should like to ask whether the conditions of heat treatment for refining overheated high-carbon steels have been ascertained. Speaking of the &'Persistence of Solidificational Segregation " Professor Howe quotes an experiment made by Mr. Stead in which a bar of 1.2 per cent. carbon steel was immersed in a large mass of molten blast-furnace slag and allowed to cool with it. The steel was heated ; above the solidus (curve An on the carbon-iron diagram), but below the liquidus (curve AB). A drop of eutectic carbon-iron alloy, rich in carbon, had liquated out and hung below the bar. This agrees exactly with my own observations on the burning of steel, but my interpretation differs somewhat from that of Professor Howe. Professor Howe considers that the fusion of a part of the metal (rich in carbon) shows that the solidificational irregularities of composition had persisted through the rolling and heat treatment of the steel, as otherwise no part of the steel would have been sufficiently fusible to melt. It does not appear to me that such an explanation is necessary. A piece of steel represented in temperature and composition by any point within the area ABa will ultimately resolve itself into a solid phase and a liquid phase in equilibrium with each other. It may appear that if the steel were absolutely uniform no fusion could take place, but, the smallest nucleus of high-carbon, fusible alloy would ultimately bring about this separation into liquid and solid phases, by diffusion of the carbon from the solid to the liquid areas. The effectiveness of 0.01 pct. molybdenum, as ammonium molybdate impregnated on coal, on the hydrogenation of a high-volatile bituminous C coal at 8,000 p.s.i.g. and 460° to 480° C. has been studied in a pilot plant by the Federal Bureau of Mines. Under these conditions, the Bureau obtained 98 to 99 pct. conversion5/ of coal to liquids and gases at throughputs of 29 to 101 lb. of m.a.f. coal per cubic foot of reaction space per hour. At 460° C. the indicated yield of oil ranged from 63 pct. (based on m.a.f. coal) at a throughput of 35 lb./c.f.h. (pounds per cubic foot per hour) to 68.5 pct. at a throughput of 58 lb./c.f.h., and the yield of gaseous hydro-carbons ranged from 25.5 to 19 pct. at the same throughputs. The maximum measured yield of oil boiling under 325° C. was 47 pct.

On May 15, 1936, Congress authorized the Bureau of Mines to conduct certain studies, experiments, and investigations of subbituminous coal and lignite .4/ Appropriations were made in July 1937, and since that date an active investigation has been underway to complete the provisions of the act. Part of the investigation has included a comprehensive survey of the known properties of the lower-rank non-coking coals, and provisions were made to obtain more data on certain varieties. In line with this plan, a typically subbituminous coal was selected for an extended series o tests in the standard Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association unit,5/ at the Central Experiment Station. This particular noncaking coal was the first one of its rank that ha& been tested in the apparatus; for this reason the results are of particular interest because the testing apparatus was originally designed for use in studying the coke- and gas-making properties of coking coals. The test as described below has been developed by the Bureau of Mines since 1927 through a cooperative agreement with the American Gas Association.6/ Ninety to 180 pounds of coal is heated in a circular retort, 13 to 18 inches in diameter, at wall. temperatures ranging from 540°C. to 1,110°C. in 100°C. steps. All products axe collected and measured; their physical and chemical properties axe then carefully determined to ascertain the gas- and coke-making properties of the coal.

An improved centrifugal-testing apparatus has been designed and built in the Bureau of Mines laboratory at College Park, Md., which is unique in that it incorporates the use of resistance gages to measure directly the strains in a rotating model without testing it to failure. Owing to this feature, a more rapid testing method can be used; furthermore, model materials need not be restricted to those of the prototype. The behavior of any structure in which strains of significant magnitude are produced by its own weight may be studied in a small model subjected to simulated gravity loading. The model is rotated in a centrifuge to induce in it centrifugal forces, which, like the gravitational forces in the full-size structure, act on the volume elements and are proportional to the masses thereof. Centrifugal testing is, therefore, applicable to the design of mine openings and to the study of similar ground-control problems. It constitutes an experimental method for determining the state of strain in a structure for which analytical methods are excessively laborious or even impossible. In previous applications of centrifugal testing by other investigators, the models usually were tested to failure, and the analysis was made from-the type of break produced. The models were made of the same materials as the proto-type, and the test results were applied only to the particular prototype represented by the model. Beam deflections were measured from photographs of the rotating model, but no means was employed either to determine the actual distribution of stress in the model or to determine quantitatively the degree of restraint imposed on the ends of the loaded model beam, that is, to determine whether the loaded model behaved as a beam with rigidly fixed ends or as some other type of beam. With the apparatus described, it is possible to determine the state of strain, and thus the boundary conditions, in a rotating test model weighing up to 90 lb., which can be subjected to centrifugal forces up to about 2,600 times the force of gravity. The load-strain relationship, applicable directly to the prototype, can be determined from a Single model test. The test results can be presented as quantitative relations between the loads, strains, and dimensions and mechanical proper-ties of the structural members and can be applied to any prototype, whatever its component materials, that satisfies the similarity requirements.

This year of 1926 marks the 40th. anniversary of nickel mining in Canada. Although the first nickel mine of the Sudbury basin was discovered in 1883, it was not until 1886 that the Canadian Copper Company was organized and actually began to mine copper-nickel ore from the Lady McDonald, Stobie and Evans mines. The intervening years have witnessed some exceedingly interesting nickel history, particularly interesting and gratifying as well to Canadians. Forty years ago, at the inception of Canadian nickel mining, the world's consumption of that metal was about 1000 tons per annum and this was supplied largely from New Caledonia ores refined in France. This nickel was used principally for the production of nickel-silver, coinage alloys, and for nickel-plating. No processes were then known for refining the Sudbury ores nor for the separation of copper from nickel. Consequently, the pioneers in Canadian nickel mining faced the double problem of finding a method of treating their ores, and of finding a market for the nickel when and if they could extract it.

The purpose of the panel's examination of coal mining research and development is to explore how the various groups that make up this research community might work together more efficiently and be more productive. The community, as defined here, includes federal and state governments, coal producers, manufacturers, unions, universities, and industry sponsored research organizations. The framework chosen for these discussions consists of brief presentations by the panel members on their views of the proper role and function of the group they represent. The panel members were also asked to highlight the economic, technical and institutional constraints that affect the performance of research and development and the use of the results. Following these presentations, a number of prepared questions will be discussed by the panel, and audience participation is invited. These questions were given several weeks ago to the panel members for their study. Before proceeding with the panel member reports, a brief review of the importance of R&D to the coal mining industry would be helpful to setting the stage for a constructive dialogue. It is appropriate to begin this review by mentioning that there is complete agreement among the research community that the major goals are: Improve health and safety Protect the environment Increase capital and labor productivity Increase resource recovery Since the basic functions of the academic, industrial and government sectors are different, we should expect that the research and development objectives and priorities, roles and responsibilities under each major goal will be different for each research group. The differences do not represent problem areas. However, problems will arise if the objectives are not properly interfaced at the appropriate time. The consequences of railing to understand the need for integrated programs will be the classic result, best described by the phrase --"a technical success but a commercial failure."

Sherritt Gordon and Cominco, with financial assistance from the Canadian Government through PAIT, have developed a hydrometallurgical process for refining copper from sulphide concentrates. The main objective of the project was to develop a process applicable to a wide range of concentrates with respect to copper content, other metals content and impurities, within the economic parameters set by present smelting and refining practice. Other important objectives were to recover sulphur in its elemental form and not as sulphur dioxide to assure improved hygienic conditions and a negligible impact on the environment. For the most abundant and relatively refractory chalcopyrite concentrates, the first step of the process is thermal activation with hydrogen to decompose chalcopyrite and pyrite, commonly associated with it, into more reactive sulphides more amenable to leaching. The iron is then selectively extracted by sulphuric acid leaching and subsequently rejected as jarosite. High-bornite concentrates do not require thermal activation and acid leaching; they are subjected to another hydrometallurgical iron removal step. The high-grade copper sulphide resulting from iron removal, and containing all of the initial precious metals, is then leached under oxygen pressure to produce elemental sulphur and copper sulphate solution . After suitable solution purification, the copper is recovered by high-current-density electrowinning as wire-grade product. Precious metals remain in the leach residue and are recovered after separation of the gangue materials and elemental sulphur. The laboratory and pre-piloting test work had indicated copper and precious metals recoveries comparable to those achieved in current practice. The process was shown to be suitable for handling relatively low-grade concentrates and, in addition, it was capable of high recoveries of associated zinc, molybdenum, nickel and cobalt in saleable form.

INTRODUCTION After a mining company has discovered a mineral deposit, the problem is then how to mine and process that deposit the best way. The principal problem facing managers or engineers who must decide on mine plant size, equipment selection, and long-range scheduling is how one can optimize a property not only in terms of efficiency but also as to project duration. Mine opti¬mization is dependent upon the interaction of con¬tributing parameters which leads to maximizing the net present value (NPV) Realistic mine planning is the key, to the analysis. The process is to be used when evaluating undeveloped properties or when a complete revamping of existing facilities is scheduled The proc¬ess is not intended for detailed mine design but rather for property evaluation and feasibility studies. The derivation of the various input parameters will only be discussed to the point where a meaningful correlation can be made with the overall analysis. The interrelationship of the parameters will be the central point because most company guidelines and financial analysts have their own standards when deriving the various inputs. Assume that the data is totally acceptable and pro¬vides at least the following categories of information and guidelines- (1) mineral and waste inventory; (2) geologic, hydrologic, and geotechnical criteria; (3) topographic layout including property boundaries; (4) metallurgical flowsheet, recovery and design criteria; (5) access, water, power, and environmental base-line study; and (6) financial constraints (minimum rate of return, payback period, etc).

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is investigating surfactants added to water sprays to enhance the control of dust during coal mining operations. The objective of the present work was to establish the general applicability of adding sulfate ion to anionic surfactant solutions in order to improve wetting action. This was pursued through laboratory wettability testing of four anionic surfactants and one nonionic surfactant in combination with various concentrations of sulfate ion. The experimental results demonstrated that the addition of sulfate ion enhanced the wetting characteristics of all the anionic surfactants when applied to hard-to-wet coals, while easy-to-wet coal showed more complex wetting behavior. Sulfate ion in the presence of nonionic surfactant enhanced wetting only slightly or not at all. Surface tension measurements of the dilute aqueous surfactant-sulfate anion solutions indicated this property was not important in coal-wetting phenomena, as long as the value was below the critical value for coal. Sulfate ion helps surfactant reduce surface tension but primarily appears to affect wetting action by altering the adsorption characteristics of surfactant on the coal surface.

The two principal attributes of a thickener pulp are its settling rate and the ultimate pulp density of the thickened mud. Testing for evaluation of thickening attributes of a pulp has usually been done batch-wise by placing the pulp in a one-liter glass graduated cylinder and noting the position of the boundary between clear liquor and mud as a function of time. Refinements in testing have included repulping a thickened mud to various dilutions and evaluating the settling rate on these various repulped muds. This is considered to make possible an estimate of the settling rate as a function of pulp density and therefore to pinpoint the slowest settling pulp which ought to be critical from the standpoint of thickener plant design. Finally, tests are sometimes made with model-size continuous thickeners of arbitrary size. In batch tests it is generally accepted that the behavior of a pulp is described by a curve such as the one shown in Fig. 1, in which the position of the boundary between clear liquor and mud (the mudline) is plotted against time. It has also been assumed that the initial settling rate (the slope of the line segment AB) is descriptive of the pulp and independent of the size and shape of the container. Where the settling rate is slower and clearly a function of time (portion CD of the settling curve), it has been assumed that the data are not of much use because of the intrusion of compacting phenomena. The next important datum is the height. PE, which is a measure of the so-called ultimate pulp density. This quantity is assumed to be characteristic of the pulp and independent of the container. When actual data are recorded, results are rarely exactly according to this theory and numerous deviations may be noted. For example, some pulps seem to require an appreciable delay before beginning to settle, as in line AF. This is spoken of as representing the need for an induction time for flocculation. It has seemed desirable to explore thickener data with a more sensitive charting tool than is afforded by the coordinates of Fig. 1. Instead of relating the position of the mudline to time, it has seemed desirable to relate the rate of descent of the mudline to time. This, in effect, amounts to charting the slope of the line in Fig. 1, or the derivative of its ordinates, against the same abscissas. Fig. 2 shows the new chart for the curve ABCDE of Fig. 1. When this new tool was applied to data obtained, for example, with sized clay pulps, astonishing differences appeared. Apparently the traditional tool conceals differences instead of revealing them, whereas the new method emphasizes them. It seems, also, that both charting methods have their uses. In this article attention is focused on the effects of pulp density and container height as they affect the settling behavior of flocculated suspensions of a sized kaolin. The thesis by M. C. Fuerstenau' gives more details than this summary, as well as some information about the effect of other variables. Sized fractions of kaolin were used, supplied through the courtesy of S. C. Lyons of the Georgia Kaolin Co. Large batches were made by agitation in a flotation machine and in a glass jar equipped with a mixer. The settling vessels were 2, 4, and 6-in. diam glass cylinders of various heights. Pulp Dilution: The effects of pulp dilution on sedimentation behavior are shown in Figs. 3, 4, and 5. Fig. 3 shows data on pulps ranging from 2.44 to 16.7 pct solids initial pulp density, flocculated with Separan and charted in the traditional manner. FROM the first days on the Norman beaches to the last days on the Elbe the Army Engineers of World War II lived off the countryside for the great bulk of the construction supplies needed for the fulfillment of their ultimate mission-to keep the army moving. To accomplish this end, vast tonnages of rock, timber, and steel were required in the construction of roads, railroads, and bridges. Combat Engineer battalions operated quarries under shell fire as a routine matter. An Engineer forestry company was decimated while cutting bridge timber on the Siegfried line. Oneof the more spectacular feats of the Army Engineers in obtaining construction materials was the operation of the Hadir Steel Works during the fall and winter o f 1944.

In order to understand (and ultimately to predict) the friction reduction resulting from the use of polymer solutions, the rheological properties of model polymer solutions have been measured over a wide range of shear rates. Both temporary and permanent shear thinning have been observed. By using base fluids of different viscosities it has been shown that permanent shear thinning depends more closely on the shear stress experienced by the fluid than on the strain rate. Hydrodynamic measurements have been made on the polymer solutions using a compliant ball on flat lubricated contact that operates in isoviscous-elastic conditions. The measured friction values can only be predicted with reasonable accuracy if the measured shear thinning properties of the lubricant are taken into account in the hydrodynamic model.

Mr. Shepard's paper was unfortunately delivered extemperaneously so no record is at hand. He spoke most interestingly and at length on the oil shales of Colorado, giving his opinion as to the ultimate outcome of the oil shale industry. He explained his idea that it would be built up of comparatively small plants, each of which would make the crudes, or more exactly would roughly divide the crude into its fractions, piping or shipping the fractions to a Central Refinery, using the residue for fertilizer, as it runs very high in fertilizer salts. He recommended that this plan be taken up by Coal Producers, that they consider the possibility of breaking up coal and selling its more refined products in place of selling raw coal. He spoke at length of the various outlets for products of distillation. Mr. McDermott gave a very interesting talk later on work that is being done in the Northern Colorado field along these lines. Mr. McDermott mentioned the strange fact that coaly materials such as mother of coal appeared to give just as good or better results under distillation than did lignite coal. Messrs. Randall, Howe, Goddard, Danford, and Nash added interesting data covering the use of pulverized fuel, and this data will be collected and offered to the Institute later in the form of a paper. Mr. Young spoke of the use of powdered coal in small units for small plants, mentioning the system now being offered by an Eastern Iron Works for small heating plants.

The leaching behavior of platinum powder in .iodide solutions under oxygen pressure in an autoclave was investigated. Ammonium salts were added to the leaching solution at neutral pH as a key lixiviant for platinum. The effect of temperature, partial pressure of oxygen, concentration of iodide and of arttmonium salts on the dissolution rate of platinum was examined. Under experimental conditions, the leaching behavior of platinum powder exhibited a complex reaction mechanism. A precipitate was found during the leaching process and was identified to be platinum ammine iodide, Pt(NH3hI4. The dissolution rate was controlled by a series of chemical reactions, the equilibrium concentration of the platinum ammine iodide being responsible for the ultimate limit to the recovery.
