When the Organic Act of 1910 established the Bureau of Mines within the Department of the Interior, the Bureau's programs involved only health and safety research and education, and fuels testing. As the Federal Government's primary agency for research in minerals, the Bureau has expanded its scientific and technological investigations to mining, processing mineral substances, eliminating occupational health and safety hazards in the mineral industries, economic development, and resource conservation. Today, Bureau activities cover a broad spectrum of programs for meeting the diverse (and sometimes conflicting) needs of mineral industries, government, and the public. In the 1960's, the Bureau initiated programs to resolve environmental problems associated with past mining and mineral processing. Dependence on foreign sources of raw materials critical to our national economy and competition from other countries for these world supplies stimulated the need to conserve and use with intelligence the Nation's minerals, metals, and materials.

Exxon Minerals Company, a division of Exxon Corporation, has been exploring for base metal deposits in the Precambrian volcanic rocks in northern Wisconsin since 1970. Aerial electromagnetic surveys of the area, conducted in 1974, reported an anomaly, near Crandon, in Forest County. In the summer of 1975, the first diamond drill entered the anomaly, representing the 25th prospect Exxon had drilled in Wisconsin. This first hole revealed significant mineralization containing zinc and copper. Subsequent drilling confirmed the discovery of a sizeable zinc-copper massive sulfide are body. 1.1.2 Location The deposit is located in northeastern Wisconsin within a topographical high called the Northern Highlands region. The deposit lies about 5 miles directly south of Crandon and about 2 miles east of State Highway 55 on Sand Lake Road (see fig. 1). Other local communities include Rhinelander 28 miles west, Antigo 45 miles south, and Iron River and Iron Mountain, in Michigan, 75 and 44 miles east and north of Crandon respectively. In relation to the lakes and streams, the deposit lies 0.25 miles north of Little Sand Lake, and about 1 mile south of Swamp Creek.

Shock tubes are used to simulate large-scale arena explosions without the use of full-scale arena sites that utilize large quantities of explosives. Instead, small explosive charges can be used to drive shock tubes. When this is done, the geometries of the explosive charges can alter the resulting pressure time curve. A common geometry chosen for the explosive charge is a sphere in order to be congruent with the spherical shockwave that emanates symmetrically in three dimensions from the detonation point. This paper reports on the findings from experiments that study the effects of altering the charge geometries and explosive types while keeping the TNT equivalency constant. Peak pressures and durations were affected by these changes. Directional phenomena are exaggerated by the use of certain charge shapes and detonation points. The speed of the detonation front in the explosive being greater than the speed of the shockwave in air played a critical role in the resulting pressure time waveforms. Waveform manipulation can be used to generate job specific waveforms that ultimately benefit the shock tube operators and their clients.

Although the first published optimum pit limit design algorithm by Lerchs-Grossmann dates back to 1965, the majority of the open-pit mines in the U.S. has not as yet adopted such a rigorous optimization algorithm. Instead, the floating cone approach initially developed by Kennecott Copper in 1961 is still used today for various reasons. However, shortcomings with the floating cone algorithm, particularly for precious metal deposits with erratic mineral distributions, have provided a renewed interest in optimizing algorithms.

"The mechanical behavior and the fracture characteristics of composites with DGEBA/TETA epoxy matrix reinforced with up to 40% in volume of continuous and thinner ramie fibers were evaluated by tensile tests. Specimens with selected thin fibers aligned along the tensile axis were room temperature tested to rupture. The fracture surface was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy. The results showed significant increase in both the ultimate tensile strength and the elastic modulus. The fracture analysis indicated the possible mechanism for the fiber/matrix interaction, which could be responsible for the composite performance.IntroductionThe fiber reinforced polymer composite emerged in the middle of last century as a versatile engineering material for applications requiring mechanical resistance in association with lightness. Its most commonly used example is ""fiberglass'', i.e., a thermoset polymer matrix composite reinforced with glass fiber. Indeed, ""fiberglass"" has a specific strength of the order of 500 MPa.cm3/g, which is the double of the strongest steels like the maraging. This motivated, at earlier times, ""fiberglass"" to replace many conventional materials including wood and natural fiber composites. Today, ""fiberglass"" has a wide range of uses from aerospace systems and appliances to sport and leisure components. However, its fabrication as well as those of any synthetic fiber such as carbon and aramid composites, requires a relatively large amount of energy. Presently, a growing concern exists regarding the consequences to the environmental by gases like C02 associated with both the energy consumption and the processing of synthetic fibers and their composites. These gases are well known responsible for global warming [1]."

The probability of making an exploration discovery in Canada can be calculated from Derry's (1970) data on exploration expenditures and number of discoveries over the last nineteen years. Considering an average exploration "try" to be $30,000, the probability of a discovery with one try has decreased tenfold from about 0.01 in 1951 to 0.001 in 1969. A plot of these probabilities can be extrapolated to the future, giving a 1969-71 three-year average probability of 0.00096 with 90 per cent confidence limits of 0.00042 and 0.00153. Using this probability, various calculations can be made, such as (1) the probability of making at least one discovery for any given exploration expenditure, (2) the probability of ultimate ruin or survival of the exploration investment process and (3) the expected value of an exploration investment. There is a critical minimum amount per discovery that must be re-invested in exploration, no matter how large the original investment is, for exploration to survive at all in the long run. Currently, this critical minimum is $31,200,000 with 90 per cent confidence limits of $19,600,000 and $71,400,000.

The Bureau of Mines made a laboratory study of the amenability of anorthosite rock ( from the San Gabriel Mountains , Los Angeles County , Calif . ) to treatment by the lime soda sinter process for the extraction of alumina . The study was done under a cooperative agreement with the California Division of Mines and Geology . This report presents the results of the investigation , and it includes a review of the geology of the deposit ( 7 ) by Dr. Gordon B. Oakeshott . Interest in the recovery of alumina from submarginal aluminum silicate ores is stimulated by the fact that the domestic aluminum industry depends on imports of bauxite for its alumina requirements . Of the 8.0 million long dry tons of high - grade bauxite consumed in 1961 for producing metallurgicalgrade alumina , only 0.9 million long tons , or 11 percent , was mined in this country . During past years many organizations have carried out research programs to determine if alumina could be extracted economically from such domestic ores as clays ( 3 , 4 ) , anorthosite ( 8 ) , and other silicate sources . Successful alumina extraction is the ultimate objective of the Bureau of Mines program.

Shotcrete is a versatile and widely utilized rock support material in mining and civil engineering projects due to its adaptability, strength, and efficient application. It immediately stabilizes rock surfaces, effectively controlling loose materials and preventing rockfalls in underground excavations. This paper focuses on assessing and analyzing data from observations of nozzlemen (shotcrete sprayers) during primary ground support activities in an underground mine. The study highlights the importance of nozzlemen’s skills in ensuring the quality of shotcrete application, which is critical for underground mining operations’ structural integrity and safety. A comprehensive training program and field support were implemented to enhance the nozzlemen’s proficiency. The training set covered theoretical knowledge and practical techniques to improve shotcrete application daily. Proficiency improvement was assessed using quantitative metrics, with rebound percentages decreasing by 5–14% as nozzleman competency increased. The results of this initiative showed significant improvements in shotcrete quality, including increased efficiency, reduced waste, and fewer reworks or rehabilitations. The findings aim to contribute to a broader understanding of best practices in shotcrete application and nozzlemen training, ultimately enhancing ground support application measures in the mining industry.

In open pit mining every effort is made to maintain as steep a pit slope as possible. Pi t slope angles are influenced by numerous factors some natural that are amenable to limited or no control at all and other mining technology related where a greater degree of influence can be exerted by the engineer. One such area where control is possible is the method of drilling and blasting in the pit. This paper discusses the influence of blasting techniques on the economics of pit slopes and demonstrates how balanced blasting can be used with advantage to pit wall control and improve fragmentation (thus reducing material handling costs). Microprocessor based instrumentation to monitor drill and blast performance has also been described.

The Institute of Gas Technology (IGT), under sponsorship of the U. S. Department of the Interior, Office of Coal Research (OCR), and the American Gas Association (A. G. A. ), has been undertaking the development of one of several processes to convert coal to high-Btu gas as a means of supplementing natural gas supplies. It is anticipated that there will be a significant need for such gas in the foreseeable future in order to meet the ever increasing demands for this preferred fuel form. HISTORY The development of the HYGAS® Process is based on various studies conducted at IGT starting back as far as 1945. Initial work was directed toward production of synthesis gas with subsequent catalytic methanation. By 1964 the concept of the direct hydrogenation of coal to produce methane noncatalytically was well-founded and the chemistry was reasonably well established. Work up until this point in time was financed by the American Gas Association. In 1964 the U. S. Department of the Interior, Office of Coal Research joined with A. G. A. to support the program. The objective at that time was to develop the necessary know-how to enable the design of a pilot plant, a necessary step in the ultimate commercialization of the process. Work for the next three years (1964-1967) emphasized investigation of fluidized-bed technology in the hydrogasification step, where moving-bed technology had been previously employed, as well as identification of commercially available catalysts acceptable for catalytic methanation of the CO and hydrogen in the hydrogasifier effluent under operating conditions in the system. By 1967, the preliminary design of a 3 ton/hr pilot plant had been finalized, and IGT received authorization from OCR to proceed with the detailed design and construction of that facility. There has been a trend in recent years in performing the initial formation freezing using liquid nitrogen (LIN) and then converting the system to circulating refrigerated brine. While proponents of this method state it decreases freezing time, it can also be considered an alternative to inadequate refrigeration capacity. This method was used on several small projects in the 1980s. Problems such as broken pipes, frozen brine, and unsafe work conditions caused contractors to re-think the method. This paper discusses these problems and also presents work schedules showing no schedule reduction. In fact, this method can lead to longer time as well as significantly higher costs. BACKGROUND Ground freezing as a method to provide groundwater control and temporary earth support for excavations is completed using a relatively simple process: drilling and installing refrigeration pipes around the perimeter of the excavation and introducing a coolant into these pipes. The coolant extracts heat from the ground, converting the pore water to ice and forming a strong, impermeable material. A typical ground freezing system is illustrated in Fig. 1. SYSTEMS There are two basic types of coolant systems: circulating and direct expansion. The circulating coolant system is made of two separate, closed systems. The medium circulating is the secondary coolant. It is cooled at a central refrigeration plant, circulated through the pipes, and warms as it extracts heat from the ground. It then circulates back to the plant where it is cooled. This coolant is chilled in a heat exchanger by the primary refrigeration system where a compressor system is charged with a refrigeration gas. The heat is ultimately extracted from the ground and expelled into the atmosphere by an evaporative condenser. Secondary coolants are usually a brine or glycol chemical while the primary refrigeration gas is anhydrous ammonia or another commercially available gas.

This study thesis was motivated by the fact that it is of fundamental importance for open pit mining that the slopes initially have a geometry in accordance with what is proposed in the mining planning. This occurs because an inconsistency in this design can impact the operational safety and economic solutions of the mining project. These consequences can be explained by the fact that rock blasting close to mining limits requires specific study due to the attention required. Because, when this operation is not carried out properly, the mining plan in the mine may not be respected and may create risks to the operation due to the presence of unstable blocks on the slopes (Mackenzie). In this sense, Mackenzie (2004) cites pre-split, trim blasting and buffer as commonly used explosive blasting techniques that aim to limit damage beyond the projected wall. Therefore, Enaex Brazil realized the need to better understand the pre-split method. To do this, it is necessary to understand how the energy released during detonation is perpetuated in the rock mass when this technique is used and when it is absent. Thus, this analysis is based on a seismic study that allows the creation of vibration attenuation laws and an elementary wave damage model, which allows the local characterization of the rock. With this model it is possible to relate the peak levels of vibration during blasting and the extent of damage, but a critical level of vibration (PPVc) and its relationship with the Uniaxial Comprehension Resistance (UCS) are also defined for the start of fracturing and its level (McKenzie et al, 1995). And, mainly, this work aims to address a way to measure the pre-split filter potential by comparing the attenuation law with and without pre-split, ultimately knowing whether this finishing blasting is being effective, to understand the pre-split filter capacity.

In order to better understand the tribological behavior of self-lubricating materials, Fe-Si-C matrix composites containing solid lubricants added during the mixing step were studied. The samples were produced by conventional powder metallurgy route, presenting total contents of 5%, 7.5% and 10% in volume of h-BN and graphite mixtures as solid lubricants. The composites were evaluated in terms of tribological properties, under reciprocating sliding conditions, and mechanical properties by using tensile tests. Additionally, the wear scars were characterized by Raman spectroscopy and scanning electronic microscopy. Higher total contents of solid lubricants greatly increased scuffing resistance however decreased mechanical properties. Furthermore, increasing h-BN contents reduces both properties. These results confirmed the applicability of such sintered composites as self-lubricating parts, reaching values up to 7000 N.m for scuffing resistance combined with ultimate tensile strength of 220 MPa.

Environmental laws and regulations have proliferated over the last two decades. 1/ Within the last year, Congress has dramatically expanded the scope of the Superfund program 2/ and has enacted significant new amendments to the Clean Water Act.3/ In addition, EPA has shown no signs of slackening the pace at which it promulgates new regulations to implement statutory programs. Placer Dome is learning from experience in Latin America, Asia and Africa, as well as in North America, that contributing effectively to sustainable human progress in the areas of its operations presents unending challenges to think creatively, communicate effectively and remain culturally sensitive. People must be better off in terms of their economic circumstances, their social conditions and the quality of their natural environment not only during the life of the mines, but after mines close. Stakeholders, all those who are directly or indirectly affected by a mining project, should be able to participate in decisions which affect them. The development of sustainability strategies, the monitoring of sustainability performance and the implementation of sustainability programs are best done in partnerships with governments, communities, nongovernmental organizations and multilateral development institutions. Ultimately, the success, if not the survival of mining, will depend on our ability to get the sustainability equation correct.
