"Arsenic released from the lithosphere by mining and metallurgical activities is a growing global environmental concern. Dundee sustainable technologies (“DST”) has developed a processing technology to sequester arsenic by means of vitrification. This method can effectively sequester arsenic trioxide without the need to oxidize from As (III) to As (V). Arsenic oxide is incorporated within a silica glass matrix that is stable as per the Toxicity Leaching Characteristic Procedure (“TCLP”) or EPA Method 1311. In this paper, the conventional treatment of arsenopyrite, commonly referred to as “two-stage roasting”, is discussed along with the options traditionally available for the remediation of the arsenic trioxide by-product. The drawbacks limiting the adoption of this processing flowsheet are discussed and a new processing route is presented for the treatment of arsenopyrite. This new flowsheet outputs an auriferous aluminosilicate highly amenable to gold extraction (> 96%) while eliminating the sulfur dioxide production associated with the second-stage roasting of pyrrhotite and ultimately uses vitrification as a definitive sequestration solution to arsenic trioxide.INTRODUCTION Faced with the depletion of conventional gold ores, the gold industry has witnessed a trend towards the exploitation of arsenical deposits. Arsenic is a naturally occurring metalloid often found in mineralogical association with gold. Many northern Canadian regions, from the Northwest Territories to Northern Manitoba, Northern Ontario and the Abitibi region are facing significant arsenic challenges. Projects are deemed uneconomic or prevented from going into operations due to the costs associated with handling arsenic material and there are penalties imposed to complex concentrates by smelters. In addition, Canadian mining operations have left an environmental legacy of gold tailings with grades typically of up to 9 grams per tonne with no processing solution as they also contain significant arsenic contamination at grades of up to 20%. Table 1 presents a list of Canadian deposits known to contain arsenic."

The competition between various options for the use of land is ever increasing. Commonly in Australia large tracts of land were un-encumbered by sweeping land use option limitations, but this situation has been rapidly altering in recent decades as governments are obliged to maximise the utility of the land for a broad range of competing interests. While the interests of miners have always been considered, the effects on limiting access to land for exploration and possible mining have not always been effectively incorporated into decision-making processes. As a result the challenge for national and state organisations representing these interests has been to develop a transparent process to allow for the mineral potential of an area to be systematically assessed and for information to be presented for use by specialists and non-specialists. Government agencies are called upon to implement government policy but also to provide accurate and meaningful advice which can assist in policy and land use decisions. Commonly timeframes are short and information can be less than complete. Nevertheless on-going decisions are made based upon the best available understanding. It is in this operational framework that the methods described in this paper are set. The paper describes a process for quickly and systematically providing advice on mineral potential for use by government agencies and ultimately the community within tight time and resource constraints. It is a method of combining the accumulated knowledge about mineral resources and their potential and presenting this information in an easily accessible form which can be used in a negotiation and policy development environment. Development of the method was undertaken to meet the needs of the Regional Forestry Agreement process in Australia. The method has been applied to study areas in New South Wales, Tasmania, Western Australia and elsewhere. Examples in this paper are taken from north eastern New South Wales.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has been conducting research related to unconventional gas wells positioned in abutment pillars associated with active longwall mining in Southwestern PA. The Ventilation and Explosion Prevention Team at NIOSH is working toward predicting and characterizing a hypothetical casing breach and its effect on the safety and health of mine workers, gas well workers, and the general public. An important aspect of this research is to distinguish coalbed gas from shale gas in the mine environment as an indicator of a casing breach. Another noncoal gas source exists in the region in the form of underground gas storage fields which also have the potential to migrate towards mine workings. During a potential gas breach, the addition of excess natural gas to coal mine environments will exceed the anticipated ventilation loading and can create a mine explosion hazard. A methodology has been developed to distinguish these gas sources. Gas samples from the three sources were analyzed by gas chromatography, and interpretive methods were applied to distinguish the populations graphically and statistically. Bivariate plots using the hydrocarbon index and the normalized molecular ratios showed that the sources occupy different regions of the graphs. All samples of non-coal gas contained under 2% CO2, and all coal samples included greater than this amount. A multivariate T-squared (T2) test analysis relating comparing data in pairs showed a low p-value (dimensionality parameter) and a high T2 test statistic for all comparisons, indicating that these sources are different and distinct gas populations. Ultimately, stakeholders from the mining and gas production industries can utilize this method to identify gas sources and a potential casing breach.

Iron ore screening plant productivity is strongly affected by the performance of the shuttle operation, with the control system robustness and associated strategies having a direct impact on utilisation and throughput rates. A number of aspects intrinsic to the methods and technologies traditionally applied on the motion control of shuttles are often observed to decrease the efficiency of the ore distribution process across multiple screening modules, which ultimately impacts the plant’s production. Those include the number of operational scenarios that are unmanaged by conventional discrete control logics which may intermittently lead to undesired events, such as ‘high level alarms’ and ‘low level interlocks’ in the screening bins. This outcome usually demands excessive manual intervention by Control Room Operators. A Reinforcement Learning (RL) Artificial Intelligence (AI) solution was deployed to control the motion operation of the scalping and products screening shuttles in an iron ore handling plant. The RL algorithm was trained in advance to handle multiple operational scenarios and generate optimised outputs. In nominal operation, the shuttles are moved in a modulating and highly predictive fashion over the whole range of safely reachable bins. When the need occurs, the AI control agent deviates from that modulation behaviour, limiting its travel range or moving to other groups or clusters of available bins by employing ‘bin jumping’ or ‘ore break’ strategies. The RL platform capabilities include the ability to learn in real time to account for and auto-adapt to new operational patterns and process changes whilst applying improved strategies for shuttle dwelling times, target setting and speed control. The deployed Reinforcement Learning AI solution has better managed the existing challenges associated with the shuttle operation and control, and resulted in a more efficient ore delivery process, superior operations stability and increased production rates.

"A microscope-based spectrophotometer has been developed to measure superoxide release from single pulmonary alveolar macrophages (PAM) or other phagocytes in culture. Results indicate that PAM respond to stimulation by phorbol myristate acetate (PMA). It appears that some PAM do not release 02 upon stimulation by PMA; however, those that do release 0, show differences in: (I) the total amount of 0, released, (2) the rate of release of 02 and (3) the time delay for release of 02. The significance of measuring 02 release from single cells is two-fold. It allows the simultaneous study of 02 release and electrical potential changes across the membrane of PAM and it allows the study of differences in 02 release among cells. Thus, the function of Normal PAM and the dysfunction of PAM exposed to coal dusts can be more closely studied on single cells.Pulmonary alveolar macrophages (PAM), free cells found in the lungs, protect the lungs by removing inhaled foreign debris and bacteria. The macrophages do this by engulfing and then internalizing the foreign matter (phagocytosis). Stimulation of PAM causes the release of super-oxide radical (02) which has been shown to be the primary metabolite involved in the killing of bacteria by phagocytes (3,8,12). The super-oxide radical is highly reactive and is spontaneously or enzymatically converted to other antibacterial oxidants, including hydrogen peroxide (H202), singlette oxygen ( 02), hydroxyl radical toil'), and hypochlorous acid (HOCl) (2, 3,8,11,12).Exposure of PAM to dusts may lead to dysfunction of this cell-type and to a greater risk of lung damage or infection upon subsequent exposure to toxic dusts. To date, much of the research with this cell-type has used cytotoxicity (cell death) as a measure of dysfunction. Although this is an important end point, PAM dysfunction may occur at doses below those which lead to cell death. In addition, dysfunction has been measured using large numbers of cells. In order to obtain a clear understanding of the mechanisms involved in dysfunction, measurements should be made on single cells. As mentioned earlier, one of the major roles of this cell type is its anti-bacterial actions. Therefore, asessment of release of superoxide radical in single cells is important in determining the functional behavior of PAM before and after exposure to dusts. Since measurements of 02 production have not been made on single cells the purpose of this study is to develop the methodology needed to study release of 02 from single cells.Recent studies have suggested that a relationship exists between the release of 02 and changes in the electrical properties of phagocytes. The change in membrane potential is thought to be the initial step in superoxide production (6,9). Stimulants which cause 02 release also cause changes in the transmembrane potential of phagocytes (9) and in the permeability of the cell membrane to ions (6). For example, stimulants which cause the release of 0, from neutrophils have also been shown to increase the membrane transport of Na+ , K+ and Ca+2 and stimulation of macrophages leads to increases in Na and perhaps Ca permeability with a subsequent change in membrane potential. In some cases, phagocytic activity has been shown to depend upon the extracellular concentrations of these ions (6). Holian and Daniele (7) have shown evidence that the redistribution ofcellular Ca in alveolar macrophages is an initial step leading to 0, release. In order to provide direct evidence that 02- production is related to electrical changes across the plasma membrane of phagocytes, these two phenomena must be analyzed simultaneously on single cells. Ultimately, measurements of 0, release using the methodology developed in this study will be combined with electrophysiological tech¬niques to study both superoxide release and membrane potential changes simultaneiously on single PAM, and to examine the effects of coal and mineral dusts on their physiological fu"

It has been estimated that 30% of the United States coal reserves occur in the Western States at depths which would preclude exploitation by surface techniques. Much of this coal occurs in seams considerably thicker than those presently mined in other parts of the country. Recognizing the lack of technology and experience in exploiting the thicker seam range the Interior Department's Bureau of Mines is implementing a major "Mining System for Western Coal," research program which has as its ultimate objective the development and demonstration of underground mining methods and technology for extracting these seams. One investigation, being carried out by D'Appolonia Consulting engieers, under contract to the Bureau of Mines, is concerned with design of an entry system for longwall top slicing of thick western coal seams. This presentation presents an overview of some of the problems which have to be faced in designing such layouts.

The phosphate ores mined in middle Tennessee typically consist of granular rock phosphate particles disseminated in a clayey matrix. In the TVA plant near Columbia, Tenn., the phosphate ore is mined, made into a slurry with the addition of a small amount of sodium hydroxide as dispersant, and treated in a hydroseparator to remove minus 10 micron material. The hydro-separator underflow, comprising a rough concentrate, is transported by pipeline to the plant; the hydro-separator overflow, comprising a tailing, is flocculated by addition of calcium sulphate and is discharged to settling ponds at a rate of about 1400 gpm. Sedimentation in the ponds produces a clarified effluent, which may be recycled for use as process water or discharged to surface drainage. This method of tailing treatment is not entirely satisfactory since poor sedimentation characteristics of the tailing result in poor ultimate utilization of pond storage volume.

Most coal being used in the United States has been subjected to one or' more processes of coal preparation. The physical and chemical characteristics of a coal have a marked influence on the ultimate uses that coal may have. The selection of the proper preparation processes may similarly be important in producing the best practical coal product for any particular use. The physical composition and distribution of physical constituents in the coal will partially determine the efficiency of the preparation process chosen and conversely distribution and concentration of coal macerals will, to a degree, be controlled by the preparation process. A number of preparation processes have been evaluated to determine this interrelation. If a coal having' certain specifications is desired, these evaluations trill assist in providing information needed for the production of this coal.

"Freeport-McMoRan Inc. (FMI) commissioned the expansion of the Morenci Metcalf concentrator in 2014. The concentrator included many design and equipment innovations, including the first-of-its-kind Metso Hydraulic Roll Crusher (HRC), variable speed ball mills and variable speed crushers. In addition to the innovative design, FMI commissioned the Metso APC team to design a realistic process simulator and the plant APC. The process simulator was utilized to train operators before commissioning, which led to a smoother plant start up. The plant APC utilized the concept of dynamic constraint control, which controls the feed to the primary ball mills by “pulling” the tons from crushed rock storage bins, which then automatically are filled by the upstream HRC and secondary crushing circuits. The primary ball-mill control also adjusts the water addition to the cyclone clusters to avoid overload and achieve sufficient grind size. The constraints include in-circuit constraints for feeder capacity, screen-deck capacity, ball mill power, cyclone mass flow, pump capacity and pump motor capacity. The APC system was implemented shortly after the start of commissioning and immediately demonstrated increased throughput and an ability to highlight and quantify process constraints and bottlenecks. The following paper outlines the control strategy, discusses system implementation, results and challenges.INTRODUCTION The FMI Metcalf Concentrator is located in Morenci Arizona on the site of the old original Concentrator. The new Metcalf concentrator started operation in May of 2014. This plant was designed for an average of 63,500 tpd (70,000 stpd), increasing the total Morenci concentrator complex production to a nominal 113,400 tpd (125,000 stpd). The process flow diagram is shown below in Figure 1.The process consists of primary crushing feeding a coarse ore stockpile followed by secondary crushing operating in closed circuit with vibrating screen decks. The screen undersize feeds the first of its kind Metso hydraulic roll crusher (HRC) operating in a closed circuit with vibrating screens. The primary crusher is a Metso 60x110 gyratory crusher. Secondary crushers are Metso MP1250 Crushers with variable speed drives. Secondary crusher discharge is recycled to the dry screen feed bin and screened with oversize returning to secondary crushing and undersize feeding the Metso HRC3000. The product from the 3.0 meter X 2.0 meter roll crusher is wet screened with the undersize feeding the grinding circuit, which is comprised of two each 24-foot diameter by 40- foot-long variable speed ball mills running in parallel with each in closed circuit with a cyclone bank of 12 cyclones. The wet screen oversize is recycled to the HRC feed bin."

Minerals Engineering Company (MECO) is a relatively small, promotionally oriented mineral exploration company founded in Colorado in 1948 during the height of the uranium boom. The company has been: 1. in uranium exploration and production 2. a drilling company 3. a manufacturer of Geiger counters 4. a major tungsten producer 5. then dormat for several years and 6. now we are back into exploration on a broad scale. We have been in underground lead and zinc production in the 1970's but we are now involved primarily in "wheeling and dealing" in mineral exploration. The company has had diverse interests in the past and we are presently diversifying to some extent into oil and gas ventures.

Compania Minera Disputada de las Condes (CMD), an Exxon Affiliate stewarded by Exxon Coal and Minerals Company, operates two' copper mines and concentrators in Chile. Pilot plant studies were initiated in 1984 using a 0.46 meter and a 0.91 meter diameter column for the cleaning of copper concentrate. This eventually resulted in the design and operation of a rectangular column with an area of 6.8 m2, increasing the final copper concentrate grade from about 30% to almost 32'1. Cu without any loss in copper recovery. Evaluation studies of a commercial bubble generator as against the previously used filter cloth air sparger are now in progress.

Newmont Mining Corporation owns and operates the Phoenix Mine near Battle Mountain, Nevada, USA. The existing milling facility has operated since 2006. Following the startup of the milling operation, and coupled with the upswing in the copper market, Newmont realized that Phoenix needed a process option to treat lowgrade transition and oxide copper ores. This meant that potentially revenue generating ore was being mined as waste. With no system in place to treat the transition and oxide copper, work began to determine the most feasible approach. After evaluating multiple options, the flow sheet was set for a run-of-mine (ROM) heap leach pad and solvent extraction/electrowinning plant (L-SX/EW). This paper will discuss the synergies and challenges of developing a copper L-SX/EW plant at the Phoenix copper-gold mill.

The Blue Cube Mineral Quantifier Inline (MQi) instrument uses reflective light spectroscopy and advanced chemometrics to measure mineral or elemental grade in a slurry line. The instrument takes scans continuously and sends data to the DCS or PLC control system.Controlling the concentrate grades on a flotation circuit using low-frequency measurements can be difficult or impossible, especially on a circuit that has fast process dynamics. The ability to rapidly measure changes in grade makes it possible to continuously manipulate the flotation circuit operating parameters such as level, airflow and reagent addition set points to optimise plant performance throughout changing conditions.At Barrick’s Porgera mine in Papua New Guinea the flotation circuit feeds sulfide concentrate slurry to a pressure oxidation circuit. In order to maximise gold recovery in the flotation plant and increase performance in the pressure oxidation process, there is a stringent requirement to maintain a stable and optimum sulfur grade. The gold recovery is directly affected by the sulfur grade as most of the gold at Porgera is submicroscopic and associated with the sulfides (disseminated?pyrite).Porgera considered various points in the flotation circuit for installing Blue Cube analysers. This was part of a plant upgrade to improve process control. Due to budget constraints it was decided to initially only install one Blue Cube analyser on the final concentrate stream of the flotation circuit measuring sulfur, sulfides, gold and particle size. The accuracy of the calibration results were very good for all these properties. The sulfur measurement was used in an advanced control system to optimise and stabilise the grade. The paper presents comparisons between mineral grades determined using analytical laboratory analyses and the online Blue Cube data measurements, as well as benefits achieved by measuring grade online. An analysis of the plant data before and after installation of the Blue Cube and the advanced process control upgrade indicate that the flotation recovery increased by 1.98 per cent.CITATION:Kewe, T, Moffatt, N, Strobos, P, van der Spuy, D, Paine, A P and Keet, K, 2014. The technical feasibility of using energy from explosive ignitions of coal dust to pump water was .demonstrated in an exploratory investigation. Ignition of small amounts of pulverized coal that were dispersed in air over columns of water pumped up to 5.3 gallons of water per cycle when operated against a head of 30.75 feet. Water displacement was accomplished by either manual or automatic operation through a single cycle, and by automatic operation through a continuous series of cycles of I-minute duration. Operating through single cycles, slurries containing up to 3 pounds of coal and 4.6 gallons of water were also pumped. Possible uses of an efficient coal-fired pump would include pumping water for irrigation purposes, removing water from mines, transporting coal from mines in the form of a slurry, and pumping water to elevated reservoirs at electric powerplants so that it could be used to generate electricity during peak periods of demand.

"In view of the decade long decline in worldwide mine equipment productivity and with heavy economic pressures and survival at risk, improvements for those remaining in the game are essential. The latest Multifactor Productivity data for the US mining industry indicates a continuing descent with Australia on a similar course. The world’s mining industry has a fleet of over 400 large draglines moving billions of tons of material annually. The most efficient use of this equipment resource will provide a competitive advantage to those companies who are committed to improving performance. A dragline monitoring system is a requirement for optimum operations. The monitor reports the facts. Focused actions can change the facts and create improved performance. Analyzing monitor data to build knowledge and create understanding is a beginning. Understanding the key productivity indicators for dragline operations and an effective benchmarking process are the basis for improvement. There is overwhelming evidence that adopting new technologies and concepts including AC drive technology can and will bring about a step change in dragline operating cost with improved production performance.STATE OF THE MINING INDUSTRY A high altitude review of the state of the mining industry provided by a study of multifactor productivity shows a continuation of lower and lower output year on year for the capital and labor inputs applied. The story is sadly similar for both U.S. mining and the Australian mining sector. In fact, according to PwC analysts the worlds mining equipment productivity has declined 20% over the past seven years. (Lumley, 2014) Although the reasons for the continuing decline in mining productivity are varied, the need for improvement is clear. The world’s mining industry fleet of well over 400 large draglines moves billions of tons of overburden and ore (phosphate, limestone, etc.) annually.This discussion will review a few of the tools available for improved productivity in dragline operations."

"In this paper, the life cycle assessment models for automobile lightweight materials including high-strength steel, aluminum alloy and magnesium alloy are developed by Gabi software. The evaluation models and evaluation indicators such as acidification effects, rich eutrophication effect, ozone layer depletion effects, global warming, resource consumption and formation of ozone potential were taken into account. It is shown that the effects of acidification and ozone formation are mainly derived from the run phase of high-strength steel and they have strong environmental impact load. While considering the entire life cycle with materials production phase and resource consumption, the aluminum and magnesium alloy appe art o have large r environmental load than high-strength steel. Base d on the evaluation, some optimization tips are proposed.IntroductionAs the increasing of car ownership, automobile has its two sides. As an environmental management tool of product-oriented, it becomes increasingly popular in industry. An integrated copper production complex includes mining, milling and smelting facilities which are usually at or near a common site, and sized to complement one another in capacity. There may also be an electrolytic retlnery serving the complex, but not always totally dedicated to its production. Mines and mills without co-owned smelters are not usually considered integrated. The first marketable product of an integrated complex is blister, or in some cases electrolytically refined copper. The nature of integrated operation brings together all of the environmental issues associated with copper production, but currently operating and newly planned facilities are required to anticipate these issues and meet stringent regulations. Older complexes, however, may have legacies of 50 or more years of operation unencumbered by current levels of environmental strictures: nevertheless, they must be remediated. Using examples from closure and remediation of the mining and mineral processing facilities in the Upper Clark Fork River Basin of Montana, the authors review some of the problems encountered since CERCLA's1 enactment in 1980, and the solutions to those problems, bearing in mind that not all of the problems and solutions were technical. Much has been written about the mines of Butte -the "Richest Hill on Earth" as it was known in its day and the mills, smelters and refineries they spawned. These facilities comprised an archetype of the integrated copper complex: from ore to metal in facilities serving and depending on one another. Many great stories of technological innovations and business triumphs have been told about Butte and Anaconda's mining history and the place The Anaconda Company occupies in that history. However, relatively little has been written about the final days: 25 years during which the once-great complex was closed, and the remnants of past glories were remediated after nearly a century of operation. This paper offers some insights from the real world affecting similar complexes still operating, and, hopefully, lessons for others just starting down the path to final closure.

"THERE HAS BEEN a marked growth in the petroleum industry in Canada since the end of the war. The rate of growth in the demand for oil products has exceeded that in United States, although the per capita consumption is still less. Estimates of the consumption of petroleum and petroleum products in Canada in 1951 are approximately 154,000,000 barrels, which is slightly more than 11 •barrels per capita, whereas the estimated consumption in United States for the same period, according to World Petroleum, is placed at 2,619,- 970,000 barrels. This, on the basis of a population of 154,000,000, would be equivalent to 17 barrels per capita. The increase in consumption of the petroleum and products is world wide. World production in 1951 has been estimated (Oil and Gas Journal) at 11,700,000 barrels a day or more than 41;4, billion barrels for the year. United States production increased 13.7 per cent to 6,143,000 •barrels a day and Canada'.s ,, total production increased about 65 per cent from a total of 29,091,235 •barrels in 1950 to an estimated (Dominion Bureau of Statistics) 48,096,800 barrels in 1951.The trend to use increased amounts of petroleum and petroleum products, particularly in the United States and Canada, has also been supplemented by increased use of natural gas. "A study has been made of the surface properties of coals of differing ranks, in their natural state and as modified by the addition of collectors. The evaluation of their surface properties has been done by captive bubble contact angles, water and methylene iodide sessile drop contact angles, zeta potential, point-of-zero charge (PZC) shift, and flotation. .changes in the hydrophobicity of coal is a function of both the rank of the coal and the collecting reagent.INTRODUCTIONThe chemical and physical properties of a raw coal will determine its response to a given beneficiation process. .For such processes as flotation, filtration, flocculation, dispersion, handling, dust supression and agglomeration, however, it is also necessary to consider the surface properties of the coal and mineral matter constitutents of the raw coal. In the case of a specific particle to be floated, it is also necessary to consider the properties of the coal as modified by the addition of some reagent designed to modify (usually increase) the hydrophobicity of the coal surface. General properties of the coal have been well summarized by Van Krevelen (1) and Elliott (2), while the data for the surface properties of coal are much more scattered in the literature (see, e.g.: Parekh and Aplan (3), Gutierrez-Rodrigues et al. (4), Aplan (5), Arnold and Aplan (6), Hogg and Chander (7) and Rosenbaum and Fuerstenau (8)). While a knowledge of the inherent surface properties of a sample are important, of much greater practical significance are the properties of the particle in the presence of a reagent, such as a collector, designed to enhance the hydrophobicity of the particle. This study will focus on the surface properties of coals of various ranks in the presence of a variety of collectors."

The purpose of this paper is to translate a mining company's "Corporate Objectives" into usable and practical guidelines for long term mine design and production scheduling. These guidelines are required to ensure that both operating and development properties are designed and economically ranked on the same basis, and with the "current" Corporate Objectives in mind. Secondly, if both management and mining engineers have a better understanding of the cause and effect of corporate policies, then penalties and risks associated with various Corporate Objectives can be put into better perspective for management. Corporate Objectives, relative to usable guidelines for either short and/or long term mine planning, could be defined as one or more of the following four objectives: 1) Maximize the recovery of the economic portion of the defined geologic resources, and hence, maximize total non-discounted project cash flows and profits (most common approach in mine design), 2) Maximize the Net Present Value (NPV) of the after-tax cash flows from each existing or proposed project, either on an individual basis or in concert with other projects, including downstream processing facilities (primary method used to judge relative investment merit of a proposed development or operating concept), 3) Limit short and long term capital expenditures to a defined ceiling, 4) Maximize product output for the existing facilities in the short term, or conversely, keep commodity production at a constant level for a series of years.
