Electronic detonators have been used on a trial basis for over a decade, and found more recent application in production blasting as well. The relative merits of these detonators and their applicability are outlined through examples from actual blasting operations. They offer unprecedented flexibility in the design of mass blasts and in control of vibration and blast-induced damage. However, the drive towards replacing the pyrotechnic detonators by electronic ones in general could prove to be counter productive without a re-examination of prevailing blasting practices. In fact, such an approach tends to blur the tremendous potential of the electronic detonators in redefining many standard blast designs and practices.

In order to overcome drilling and tapping of high hardness wear resistent material in slurry pumps, most of time mild steel inserts are mounted in the mold and after pouring they become an integrated part of the casting. This process is limiting the size and design possibilities of slurry pumps and efforts were made to drill and tap the hard iron itself. The paper will present practical results obtained in drilling and tapping Cr-Mo wear resistent material with hardness in excess of 700 HBN. The life time of the slurry pump parts used in hazardous waste fuel transportation with high slurry velocity and 15% solid loading some of it being quartz, increased 2.5 to 6 times.

There are five logical stages in the search for orebodies in virgin territory, namely: (1) reconnaissance inventory of geology, and related investigations; (2) development of broad concepts as a basis for selecting regions of potential mineral deposits; (3) assessment of criteria leading to specific localities within these regions; (4) geo-physical and geochemical studies that will delineate small anomalous areas; and (5) stripping, drilling or other means of locating ore. In addition, the development of new means of extracting mineral resources and the finding of new uses play a vital role in our mineral industry. The continued growth of this industry will be largely governed by our ability to develop or to adapt new concepts and techniques, and to produce a greater number of scientists and engineers. It should always be remembered that more than one-third of Canada's exports are dependent upon our ability to find, develop and economic-ally exploit new orebodies.

For large mining sites in the west, the traditional method for performing an ecological risk assessment (ERA) provides little useful information for risk managers faced with selecting and designing sound remedial options. Current U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) risk assessment guidance largely supports quantitative risk characterization of individual species as surrogates for population and ecosystem-level effects. Developing a work plan for investigating and remediating ecosystem-level changes potentially caused by large-scale historic mining/smelting contaminant release requires a decision process that incorporates a more holistic ecosystem management approach. Some of the most wasteful efforts associated with mine site ecological risk assessments arise when the risk analysis and data collection programs are not specifically linked up-front to the risk manager's decision needs. The following paper discusses the importance of employing a decision-based, ecosystem management framework when conducting ecological risk assessments at large mining sites. A case study of an ecological risk assessment currently being performed at a large New Mexico copper mine site is presented.

This mine is situated at Point Aconi, Cape Breton , Nova Scotia, and is a replacement for the 100-year-old Princess Collie ry. It is a slope mine which is the continuation of a s trip mine operation. There are fives lopes from the surface driven with Dosco Dintheaders - this marks the first time these machines were used in North America. There are four room -and-pillar sections, each equipped with a Lee Norse HH106 continuous miner, a "Top Dog" roof bolter and two Wagner diesel Teletrams. There are also two Eimco 913 diesel LHD's , which are used for clean-up in the mines. This paper describes the mining operations of this 800,000-tpy mine which, in less than a year and a half , has been developed to the stage where four sections are producing coal at the desired rate.

This paper is a brief review of the recent history, and the present status of, of the program designed to develop practical new processes for producing pipeline quality gas from coal. Clean synthetic pipeline-quality gas from coal became a major objective during 1971. Agreement was reached with the American Gas Association, Inc., to cosponsor a $120 million, 4-year program to be funded $80 million by Government and $40 million by American Gas Association. The program was first announced by President Nixon in his Energy Message on June 4, 1971, and a portion of the additional funds needed for the program was approved by the Congress in the December 1971 supplemental budget action. A natural gas shortage has developed in the United States and every indication is that it will worsen. Many transmission and distribution companies have already been forced to curtail sales because of the shortage. Large sums are being committed to systems needed to bring liquefied natural gas from abroad and to plants to manufacture synthetic natural gas from petroleum--also largely imported. On the other hand, there is sufficient domestic coal to supply all of the needed gas through the next century. This accelerated program is designed to provide processes for making gas from coal at costs, including security costs, below the imported alternates. As outlined in the President's Energy Message, OCR and A.G.A. have accelerated the coal gasification program to make it possible to construct and operate a "demonstration plant" (semicommercial size) after 1975. Several processes, in various stages of development as will be described later, are being supported. Concurrently, the overall program will be constantly monitored and evaluated with the assistance of an independent, unbiased contractor. C F Braun of Alhambra, California, was selected for this task and has been actively engaged in it for the last several months. Full-scale rupture tests were conducted on 508 mm (20 in) diameter API X-60 5.7 mm wall thickness pipes containing either axial semi-elliptical cracks or simulated corrosion defects with equivalent depths ranging from 20 to 60 percent thickness. In the case of the cracks, the failure pressures were predicted with reasonable accuracy when considering a level 3 failure assessment diagram (FAD) procedure based on API 579, as compared to level 2 FAD, since the mechanical properties were known. In both cases, the accuracy improved for shallower cracks. Considering simulated corrosion defects, the RSTRENG approach provided more reliable results on predicting the collapse pressure. For a similar depth and profile, the cracked pipes failed at a lower pressure than those containing simulated corrosion defects of equivalent depth.

"THE TOPIC on which I am speaking this afternoon is ""The Future of the Canadian Oil Industry.'' At the time of C + 100, we should take a searching look at ourselves, an honest appraisal of our achievements and a forthright accounting of our shortcomings as well as the uniquely Canadian aspects of this industry. I would like to put before you some of my views on the direction we are taking in the exploration field and in the production field. I would also like to speak briefly on some of our problems and the role of the various segments of our industry in solving these problems.First of all, let us look at the exploration picture. We are in the midst of an exploration boom. There were 133 seismic crews active in Western Canada this winter, the highest since 1957, land prices are appreciating rapidly, Canadian oil reserves increased + 16 per cent during 1966, there is a great demand for technical personnel of every kind and the whole industry, except the drilling segment, seems to be prospering. This surge of activity has its roots in two major occurrences. The first of these was the change in the pro-ration system in Alberta, the major producing province, accompanied by the change in spacing pat-terns. The proration change was designed primarily to encourage in-creased exploration and it has certainly had this effect. It has also had the unforeseen effect of put-ting everyone into what we, in the oil business, call ""elephant hunting."" In other words, the days of the development of barely economic, marginal fields are over. Oil companies today are only interested in high-reserve, high-productivity, high-quality reservoirs."

Introduction The purpose of this paper is to interest mining men in the economic possibilities of sand deposits suitable for modern foundry work. Many members of the profession are constantly travelling over the country and it is felt that some knowledge of the necessary properties of foundry sands will enable these men t0 recognize such deposits. It is the experience of the writer that good sands suitable for the varied work of a foundry, such as that of the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company, at Trail, are almost impossible to obtain from western Canadian sources. It is hoped that the following discussion may arouse some interest in the search for such sands. Sands are used in foundries for two purposes. The main use is for making moulds suitable for receiving hot metal. The mould must retain the? required shape until the metal has solidified. The second use of sand in the foundry is as an abrasive in sand blasting. This is a relatively minor use, and consequently will not be dealt with in detail. Any coarse sand with a high content of quartz will serve this purpose, but round-grained sands are superior to angular types, because they have not the same tendency to shatter on impact with the casting. Sand plays an extremely important part in the successful production of sound castings. This is more evident today than ever before, due to the greater variety of castings and alloys, each of which requires special sand characteristics. Poor sand is responsible for a great many foundry troubles which formerly were attributed to bad? metal; in fact, one investigator goes so far as to say that ninety per cent of bad castings can be traced directly to the sand. Very little of the vast amount of sand distributed over the earth's surface is suitable for moulding. It is the purpose of this paper to describe briefly the properties which are essential in good moulding sand. Sand for this work must be able to withstand the wash and hydrostatic pressure of molten metal, and yet be sufficiently porous to allow the gases generated in the mould to escape.

"A mechanistic model of axial charge segregation in rotating drums is presented. We show that granular material composed of different frictional properties diffuse into axial bands as a consequence of concentration fluctuations in the free surface layer that is caused by friction-limited mobility. A Bagnoldian stress assumption ensures an asymmetric free surface profile thereby providing the essential ingredients for the evolution of axial bands and the subsequent band coarsening observed in the literature. The formulation is sensitive to the boundary conditions of tumbling mills, including particle size and density, mill speed, inter-particle bulk friction, end wall friction and drum geometry (length and diameter).INTRODUCTIONA mechanism to fully describe the axial segregation of charge in a rotating drum remains elusive to the mineral processing industry. With regard to low aspect ratio mills (like ball mills), current thinking favours the use of closed circuit mills with correspondingly low residence times to offset the completely random contact probabilities between particles and balls (Wills & Napier-Munn, 2006). Conical end caps are argued to exploit the centrifugal force to achieve a regular gradation of ball size along the mill with larger sizes at the feed end and smaller ones closer to the discharge. However; segregation along the length has been observed in the absence of conical end caps (Oyama, 1939; Levine, 1999): In these investigations, sufficient differences in the particle’s mechanical properties (particle size, density, shape, surface roughness) was enough to successfully achieve axial segregation. Figure 1 shows the segregation of a bimodal distribution (by size) into bands of larger (darker colour) and smaller (lighter colour) particles."

Compania Minera Disputada de las Condes S.A. (Disputada) is proactively implementing closure and reclamation planning activities at its mining and beneficiation facilities (mining facilities) in Chile where regulations governing mine reclamation are not yet fully in place. These activities are being implemented to improve currently employed measures to protect human health and the environment and to enhance reclamation and facilitate future closure with regard to these areas when mining is completed. As part of this process, Disputada, with the assistance of Shepherd Miller, Inc., developed recommendations and guidelines for future closure and reclamation of the Disputada sites. These recommendations and guidance incorporate planning and operational and post-operational design considerations and practices, and standards used by the mining industry and regulatory agencies around the world. The criteria presented in the guidance are based on achieving conditions that will be suitable for the anticipated post-mining land use. This paper discusses the process and approach taken, and the results.

"A high altitude review of the state of the mining industry provided by a study of multifactor productivity shows a continuation of lower output year on year for the capital and labor inputs applied. The story is sadly similar for both U.S. mining and the Australian mining sector. In fact, according to PwC analysts, the world’s mining equipment productivity has declined 20 percent during the past seven years (Lumley, 2014). Although the reasons for the continuing decline in mining productivity are varied, the need for improvement is clear.The world’s mining industry fleet of more than 400 large draglines moves billions of tons of overburden and ore (phosphate, limestone, etc.) annually. This discussion will review a few of the tools available for improved productivity in dragline operations.Benchmarking equipment performance exposes the possibilitiesIn the September 2013 Mining Engineering cover story Graham Lumley and R. Adsero suggested that analyzing best practice equipment performance from an industrywide database for specific equipment performance improvement goals would be beneficial (Adsero, 2013). Benchmarking equipment performance by normalizing differences and then comparing specific measures of performance will provide a road map to improvement for those following the leaders. For those already performing at best practice levels, a benchmark confirms and bolsters what has already been achieved. As described in the SME February 2014 paper by this author, best practice is the average of the top 10 percent in annual output. Filling performance gaps identified by a comparison to best practice by investigating the details of the why and taking action to change, makes all the difference. This is true for all major mining equipment. Given the large gap between average performance and best practice performance most mining operations can benefit. Best practice performance provides a view of what is possible to the 90 percent majority of mining operations that are performing below the top 10 percent.For dragline mining operations, identifying specific characteristics and practices of leading dragline performance will provide a reference for comparison."

The paper concludes with a look at future trends in powder metallurgy.INTRODUCTION TO POWDERSTHE IRON POWDER INDUSTRY is enjoying a very rapid growth. The annual consumption of iron powder is now at the 100,000-ton level, twenty times higher than it was at the end of World War II, and the yearly in-crease bas been almost consistent at 20 per cent. This is expected to increase, bringing the tonnage to 200,-000, or even (according to some experts) to 270,000, in 1970. In any event, powder metallurgy is expanding at high speed and making an important impact on the production of iron and steel products. Some indication of the faith in the future market may be indicated by the commencement of three new powder production plants in Canada with a total capacity of 136,000 tons annually."

In Victoria’s onshore Gippsland Basin, geology is driving brown coal developments, and geologists are key decision-makers. Prompted by volatile energy prices and the likelihood of a carbon constrained future, significant work has been carried out on the next generation of technologies to be applied to this giant resource. These include new-generation gasification technologies, coal conversion processes yielding products as diverse as diesel and fertiliser, drying technologies producing thermal and metallurgical coals and in situ conversion processes. However, coals aren’t coals, and brown coal available for new projects will have different quality parameters and mining economics from that currently mined.New projects are likely to be developed on coals with moisture contents averaging 60 per cent and corresponding low energy values. Whilst ash values will be low, averaging just 5 per cent (dry basis), this will at times approach 10 per cent, which is a level that would challenge the installed-generation technologies. Sulfur values will average 0.4 per cent (dry basis), but at times exceed 0.6 per cent, requiring technologies that address the potential for sulfur dioxide emissions. Whilst localised high levels of the fluxes iron (>1 per cent dry basis) and sodium (>0.3 per cent dry basis) would increase fouling of installed technologies, they may be suitable for selected next-generation technologies.Project viability for this next generation of technologies will be strongly influenced by mining cost, and geologists are playing a role in identifying higher-value coal. At its simplest, this is being achieved for open cut mines through regional, vertical strip ratio assessments, which are considered a first-order proxy for mining cost. Follow up assessments are incorporating mining and processing cost, coal quality penalties and product revenues. At a regional scale, it is informing the likely location and relative timing of future mine developments, as well as thinking around rehabilitation strategies, infrastructure and land-use planning.For deeper coal, factors like macro permeability, the ability to isolate seams from aquifers, groundwater chemistry, pressure temperature conditions, connection with groundwater recharge and in situ biota are being used as vectors to in situ coal conversion opportunities.Matching coal to the next generation of technologies has benefited from regional-scale geological studies of coal quality and mining economics, and has benefited from early engagement between geologists, technology developers and project proponents.CITATION:Maher, S and Love, G, 2014. It is the purpose of this paper to point out conditions as they exist in the merchandizing of coal, to compare these conditions with methods in use by competitive producers of coal substitutes, and to present briefly some suggestions which may help the individual operator to market more coal in the immediate future, while we are waiting for the scientist and research worker, who are now busy on coal betterment , to produce in a practical way the results which they now write about in such glowing terms. While it may be unnecessary to call the attention of coal operators to the present deplorable condition of the industry, it might be well to impress upon our members in other branches of mining, as well as upon the public at large, the seriousness of the situation. Emerging from the war and the period of reconstruction that followed, the coal industry found itself with too many mines and too many men for normal conditions. To make matters worse, the interruptions in deliveries caused by strikes, the unfavourable publicity caused by socialistic propaganda, and the repeated governmental investigations, made the market a fertile field for coal substitutes which were not so handicapped. These substitutes were well advertised, and were marketed in an up-to-date manner, furnishing an example from which the coal operator could well profit. Now, whether or not there is agreement as to the cause or causes of this condition, there can be no doubt that we are today face to face with the fact that the sale of coal has not kept pace with the sale and use of other commodities. Had it done so, we would ere this have been able to take care of the surplus labour and work our mines at least approximately full time.

A good understanding of the behavior of broken rock helps to make more informed decisions regarding slope stability and waste dump issues in mines. The cohesion coefficient of rock has little influence on the strength of broken rock; therefore, a criterion based on friction and cohesion of intact materials does not provide an accurate analysis for the strength of broken rock. This paper illustrates the effective strength of broken rock through a brief literature review about failure of intact rock and rock masses. The complete stress- strain curve and some important points of residual strength of rock are summarized in this paper.

The advantage of using a clean coal as a feedstock in a direct liquefaction plant is improved performance of the plant by several factors e.g., increased throughput of coal; reduced wear and tear of valves, pipes, and pumps; increased liquid yields, etc. This paper examines the technical feasibility for cleaning Illinois #6 coal as a feedstock to a direct coal liquefaction plant via selective agglomeration using a coal-derived heavy distillate, Wilsonville V-1074 as agglomerant. Effects of addition of Kerosene or coal-derived Naphtha as conditioner, coal particle size, slurry pH, oil to coal ratio, and operating temperature on ash reduction and clean coal weight recovery have been studied. Results show that about 70% of the ash can be removed from this coal and the clean coal weight recovery over 85% can be achieved by using this technique with suitable selection of coal particle size, slurry pH, mixing intensity and oil to coal ratio.

The research conducted previously on Shock-Tunnel Waveform Analysis gave a brief insight into the propagation of a shockwave within a shock-tunnel compared to that of an open air arena test. As a refresher, a shock-tunnel is an energy channeling device used to simulate the effects of a large scale detonation with significantly smaller charge weights; having the ability to conduct tests in this fashion can greatly reduce the costs of testing products.

A two level factorial study was undertaken to investigate the relative impacts of factors affecting the kinetics of polytetrafluoroethylene, PTFE, assisted pressure oxidation of chalcopyrite. A copper flotation concentrate, principally composed of chalcopyrite, was leached in 850 mL of leach solution under conditions similar to those of the CESL process. The factors manipulated were: the amount of 1/8" PTFE beads added (100 g or 650 g), oxygen pressure (690 kPa or 1030 kPa), and concentrate addition (10 grams or 65 grams). Copper extraction data, which indicated complete leaching under certain conditions, were fit using a shrinking core model from which rate constants were estimated and further used to generate a statistical model containing only the factors of significance and their interactions. Results indicated a strong positive effect of PTFE addition and a strong negative effect of increasing pulp density. A weak negative interaction between increasing PTFE addition and pulp density was attributed to PTFE/concentrate agglomeration.

Highwall Mining has been recently introduced in India. The first Continuous Highwall Mining extraction in India started operating at Ramagundem Opencast Project-II (OC-II) of Singareni Collieries Company Ltd. (SCCL) in December 2010. A new hybrid empirical and numerical modelling approach has been devised to design web pillars for the initial Highwall Mining sites in India, considering the complex geology, such as existence of thick seams and multiple seams in close proximity. This paper gives the scientific elucidation of a comprehensive design methodology adopted for the above mentioned Indian Highwall Mining sites. The design technology includes web pillar design for multiple seams using hybrid empirical and numerical methods, slope stability assessment, ground movement monitoring, and recommendations for conducting blasting operations in the vicinity of Highwall Mining extractions.
