This study presents a method for the determination of intra-particle diffusivities in ion-exchange resins for the purposes of evaluating the state of resin degradation during service. The method uses a zero length column (ZLC) in a closed circuit with variable speed pump and reservoir. The intra-particle diffusion is determined from absorption data by using the Nernst-Plank approximation along with the ‘mass transfer factor’ - which is a product of the mass transfer coefficient (kf )and the concentration of the adsorbing ion in the liquid at the surface of the resin - in a computer algorithm fitting simulated curves to experimental data.. Through this approach the changed intra-particle diffusivity, of a gel-type acid resin, over a 1000 loading and elution cycles, is shown.

Since the initial discovery of phosphate rock resources in North West Queensland in 1966, significant changes in ownership and development direction have occurred. Initially development of the resource involved beneficiation to produce a more saleable grade of phosphate rock. However more recently development has focused on the production of a high analysis fertilizer product on the minesite. These changes have been influenced by economics, industry/government cooperation and a changing phosphate industry.

Paste tailings disposal was successfully implemented at the New Jersey mill in Kellogg, ID with two different types of ore feed, a gold ore and a silver ore. The purpose of this paper is to describe the production of paste tailings, including operational problems during commissioning, and also highlight the environmental and economic benefits that were realized versus conventional tailings disposal such as the recycling of process water, increased shear strength and reduced permeability of the tailings mass, and reduced environmental permitting.

Virtual Reality (VR) is a concept in which the human experience of perceiving and interacting with a computer-modeled environment is achieved through the use of sensors and effectors. It is an advanced fonn of computer graphics where the images are generated based upon where the user looks and how the user moves. As personal-computer-based (PC-based) instruction gains acceptance as an innovative approach to providing safety training, VR offers the capability of providing a multisensory, rather than merely a multimedia, mode of presentation. VR has been effectively used by the military for training tank commanders and by hospitals for training surgeons. However, these applications have been limited to small numbers of highly skilled participants. The purpose of this paper is to examine VR's potential for enhancing the hazard awareness of larger numbers of individuals in a broad-based approach to mine safety training, such as new-miner, annual-refresher, and independent-contractor training.

Permanent rock bolts used to support rock tunnels are required to perform for the design life of the structure as a minimum. Quality of installation is critical to the performance over the life of the rock bolt.This paper will present the findings from an in investigation into the integrity of rock bolts installed in an underground hydroelectric power station cavern and access tunnel. The 25?mm diameter rock bolts were installed 50 years ago, tensioned and post cement grouted. Due to a major machine upgrade the whole facility was subject to an asset survey. The owners are responsible for managing the risks associated with the failure of these rock bolts and ensuring the structural integrity of the tunnels and caverns is maintained to continue operations, protect machinery, assure production and more importantly maintain a safe working environment for all employees and visitors.To help manage risk a proactive approach is desired. To this end a test schedule using a non-destructive testing (NDT) system was carried out by Independent Integrity Testing Pty Ltd (i2t). The system used in this application was RokTel™. The system operates by applying a small axial impact to the rock bolt end and measuring the resultant acceleration response. The rock bolt characteristics affect the acceleration response.The data output from the system is analysed principally using Fourier Analysis (FFT) and sinusoidal waves. The energy generated in the bar, the rate of damping and changes in frequency are all assessed. Testing was carried out on 70 rock bolts within the tunnel and cavern. A selection were then over cored, photographed and documented. The data gathered from the testing is then correlated with physical evidence to establish a calibration for the remainder of the rock bolts and assess if this is a viable method for identifying defective elements, and what degree of accuracy can be achieved. The Synthetic Rock Mass (SRM) approach has the potential to capture the mechanical behavior of large rock samples. In order for the method to be used with confidence it is necessary to gain a good understanding of the factors that influences its analysis. This paper reports on a series of numerical experiments, based on field data from a large underground mine, to investigate the influence of intact rock mass strength of a constructed (SRM). A jointed rock mass defined by three fracture sets was simulated by a Discrete Fracture Network (DFN) model. The generated fracture network was subsequently embedded into six different intact rock samples, simulated by a bonded particle model in PFC3D, generating six SRM samples. Each intact rock sample was 7 m × 7 m × 14 m and assigned different mechanical properties. The first intact rock sample was assigned a uniaxial compressive strength of 205 MPa and an elastic modulus of 104 GPa with the UCS and elastic modulus values of the other samples downgraded by 10% until the weakest sample had a UCS value of 121 MPa and an elastic modulus value of 61 GPa. All SRM samples were loaded under uniaxial compression to obtain the complete stress strain curve. It was observed that the compressive strength of the rock mass samples decreased by 10% following the same trend as the rock material strength. However, the elastic modulus of the rock mass samples decreased non-linearly with reduction of the elastic modulus of the rock material. The Poisson's ratio of rock mass samples does not change with decrease of rock material properties. For the post-peak behaviour the results show that both the brittleness index and the residual strength of rock mass samples decreased as the rock material properties degrades.

"The Sheppard East Light Rail Transit (SELRT) project comprises approximately 13 km of new light rail, which will be constructed along Sheppard Avenue East in Toronto. There is a 380 metre long section of the route that will be constructed as tunnel below Highway 404, which is owned by the Ministry of Transportation Ontario (MTO). MTO has published guidelines for tunneling under its highways. An impact analysis was undertaken to predict the surface settlement and angular distortion of Highway 404 resulting from the construction of the twin tunnels. The results were then compared to the performance criteria defined in MTO’s guidelines. As a result of this analysis, it was necessary to request an adjustment to MTO’s current performance criteria. This paper presents details and results of the impact assessment, approaches taken to satisfy the requirements defined by MTO, and provides details of the adjustment permitted by MTO. INTRODUCTION Several major rapid transit projects are planned for the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) located in southern Ontario, Canada. These projects are part of The Big Move (Metrolinx 2008) initiative, a 25-year, and $50 billion plan aimed at improving regional transportation. Metrolinx, an agency of the Government of Ontario, is now working collaboratively across the region to deliver major Toronto rapid transit projects to the GTHA. One such project is the SELRT. The line will largely run along Sheppard Avenue East on the surface, except for a crossing of Highway 404 where it will be constructed using a combination of open cut and bored tunneling methods. AECOM has been retained by Metrolinx as the Technical Advisor (TA) to develop the Reference Conceptual Design (RCD) and Project Specific Output Specifications (PSOS) for the project. Also, Infrastructure Ontario (IO) is the Co-Sponsor and CH2M HILL is Metrolinx’s Owner’s Engineer (OE) & Project Management Support (PMS) for the new LRT lines. This paper presents information on the tunneling settlement analysis and further work undertaken to satisfy the MTO’s requirements."

Shortage of natural gas is reviving interest in low-Btu fuel gas made by gasifying coal in fixed-bed producers. The Bureau of Mines gasified strongly caking Pittsburgh bed coal over test periods lasting four days in an experimental gas producer located at Morgantown, W. Va, Mechanical stirring throughout the fuel bed was effective for keeping the fuel moving and this stirring made the operation successful; hence, the gas producer was named the stirred-bed producer. Nuclear density gages were applied as control instruments to indicate coal flow and fuel level, and to record the frequency and location of void spaces in the bed, The gas, of nominal 140 to 165 Btu/scf calorific value, could be burned in a boiler for generating steam.

The west central upper Peninsula of Michigan contains a large resource of graphitic slate. The slate has potential industrial use as a substitute for shale currently used in the production of portland cement. Some of the unweathered slate, however, has a high concentration of pyritic sulfur which can create emission problems when processed in a kiln. A low cost method to reduce the sulfur content of the slate through the optimization of pyrite oxidation in a bio-heap leaching operation was investigated.

"Experiments in conjunction with finite element analysis (FEA) are used to better predict crack propagation in ductile/brittle graded composites. Cu/W graded composites were fabricated by stacking discrete layers of powders and hot pressing. Crack propagation was studied by loading a notched beam in four point bending and examining the subsequent crack deflection. The notch was placed within a particular composition of material, oriented in a direction perpendicular to the gradient direction. Elastic and plastic mismatch between different constituents in the graded composite induce shifts in the phase angle of loading, thereby causing the crack to deflect. FEA indicates that thermal residual stress has a negligible ""influence on the crack path. The combined FEA and experimental results suggest that elastic mismatch is the single most important material property-related factor in controlling crack deflection.IntroductionMany 'applications would benefit or may even require materials whose performance or functionality must vary spatially. While the concept of functionally graded materials has existed for nearly one hundred years, it is only within the last fifteen years, that research efforts have focused on generic issues in processing, properties and performance of functionally graded materials. This generic research effort has brought together scientists and engineers from traditionally different disciplines to address common issues with graded composites. The current work focuses on issues in structural joining. A wide variety of applications require some type of joining between dissimilar materials. Examples include thermal barrier coatings for turbine engines, wear resistant coatings for tools, ceramic engine parts, and microeiectronic devices, as well as many traditional applications involving metallic welding. The joints may either be discrete, involving a single interface, or they may· be spatially graded in composition. Extensive theoretical and experimental information exists on discrete bimaterial and trimaterial joints, but relatively little exists for graded joints or composites"

Soil mixing and jet grouting have been widely used to support heavy structures such as tanks, cement silos, and storage buildings. Although the installation methods vary between soil mixing and jet grouting, the end product of soil-cement columns behaves similarly in supporting structure loads. In many cases, soil-cement mass treatment offers the owner savings over driven/drilled piles. This paper discusses the design methodology, production work, and quality control, with supporting figures, of a recent large complex tank farm project. The project consisted of constructing six above-ground steel storage tanks and an approximately 700-foot-long fill slope. The tank farm site is located in an industrial area of southern California, with highly variable subsurface conditions consisting of compressible soils and buried construction debris. The compressible soils necessitated that the new tanks be supported on deep foundations. A test pile program performed previously at the site showed that conventional driven concrete piles were not feasible because of buried construction debris, therefore a soilcrete system was proposed. Site design included evaluating the total and differential settlement and column group bearing capacity under both static and seismic loads. Extensive field and laboratory testing confirmed the design soil-cement strength and modulus of both the soil mixed and jet grouted soil-cement columns. The project operation and quality control programs are also included in this paper.

Cyanide management practices on modern gold plants are becoming more onerous, due to environmental pressures, particularly for signatories to the International Cyanide Management Code. Operations are therefore seeking to reduce levels of weak-acid dissociable (WAD) cyanide reporting to spigot discharge as well as to any eventual discharges from the tailings storage facility (TSF). Current gold industry standard processes primarily include the oxidation of cyanide by means of sodium meta-bisulfite (SMBS, or SO2) with air, Caro&apos;s acid (H2SO5) or hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). These processes require the transport and usage of expensive oxidizing reagents, along with the safety and environmental issues associated with these corrosive and toxic chemicals. Maelgwyn Mineral Services (MMS) has developed the MMS CN-DTM process, which utilizes the Aachen ReactorTM, a high-energy mass-transfer superoxygenation system, in conjunction with an activated carbon-based catalyst and no additional reagents, to increase the rate of cyanide oxidation to cyanate, the thermodynamically more stable form. Testwork conducted at the Maelgwyn Australia testwork facility in Perth Australia is described, at both pilot scale and continuous bench-scale, on a sample of tailings effluent obtained from an Australian gold plant. WAD cyanide is demonstrated to be lowered using the MMS CN-DTM process from an influent of 130 mg/L to the required levels for discharge to TSF (<50 mg/L). The continuous test results showed stable operation over three residence time turnovers. The pilot-scale results demonstrated the efficiency of the process at the reasonably large scales required for engineering cost estimation.

"By the year 2000, the steel industry, not only in the United States but in the rest of the world, will undergo significant changes. On the other hand, there will be a number of areas in which change will be minimal.The current capacity of the industry worldwide is approximately 800-810 million metric tons. This may grow to some extent, as Third World countries install capacity. However, much of it will be neutralized as the industrialized countries shrink their current capacities.There will be several breakthroughs in terms of technology, some of which deal with the production of iron outside of the blast furnace. However, these processes will not be far enough advanced by that time to replace the blast furnace, rather they will supplement it.In terms of steelmaking and the subsequent rolling process, there should be a number of basic improvements. The strip mills will roll sheets with a very slight variance in gauge, which will give the customers a better product for automatic stamping machines. Ordinary carbon steel, in a number of instances, will be replaced by high-strength, low-alloy steel, which will reduce the tonnage necessary for present-day applications, such as construction.The corporate organization will be significantly changed as joint ventures and mergers will reduce the number of companies, as well as facilities in operation. This will enable the industry to reduce its capital investment and improve operating costs, so that it will be able more effectively to compete with other materials, such as plastics, cement, aluminum, etc."

Adaptive mineral processing has to rely on spatially predicted information on primary geometallurgical parameters, like phase composition, size and shape distributions of grains from various phases, portions of value elements in different grain types. Naively, one would predict these parameters geostatistically and select an optimal processing for the predicted structure. This is suboptimal, due to various kinds of non-linearities in the problem. First, some primary geometallurgical quantities themselves are measured in non-real scales, like compositional or stereologically distorted geometric information. Standard geostatistics has to be replaced by compositional and geometric geostatistics, involving complex transforms and restrictions. Further, only partial and uncertain information is available, introducing a stochastic character to the optimisation problem. Moreover, many response variables leading to costs, outcomes and eventual effects of later processing depend non-linearly on the primary geometallurgical parameters, which implies that the final monetary value is not estimated unbiasedly by kriging. Finally unbiased linear prediction (such as kriging) is not the best method of prediction for decision making. The conditional expectation of the monetary values is needed instead. The impact of these problems is explained in this paper, with simplified examples, and a first approach to a general solution is proposed. General: National Asbestos Mines Limited has operated an asbestos mine and mill near Thetford Mines, Quebec, since 1958. As a result of additional exploration of the orebody in 1962-63, it became apparent that long-range mining plans would have to be revised to allow for a large increase in both ore and waste tonnages. It was decided that the task of checking out possible mine designs could best be analyzed by a computer to obtain data from which an optimum open-pit configuration could be plotted. Object: It was desired to arrive at an optimum open-pit configuration with an over-all pit slope of 45 degrees and a minimum operational width of 200 ft. at the bottom. Calculations were based on assay values from diamond drill holes in cross sections of the mine. The computer&apos;s assignment was to select and describe, by coordinates, the optimum cross section for the mine. Mine engineers then assembled the various optimum sections to produce the pit outline. As this would not necessarily result in a practical mining arrangement, the computer also provided alternate solutions,

Mines today use various methods of mining to extract ore. Because of the dangerous nature of many of these processes, remotely controlled LHD machines are being used to extract the ore from the draw point. The remote control system, although being made safer all the time, has remained virtually unchanged for many years. The basic functionality is an operator switching the machine to remote control, getting out of the cab, walking up a stand, operating remotely, returning to the cab, switching to manual, driving manually, switching to remote, and switching to manual. It seems repetitive, and time consuming, does it not? Networking, convergence, video, voice, and data infrastructures, and other technologies are growing by leaps and bounds in virtually every industry and region, except for mining. From the comfort of the living room couch, a Canadian can play hockey online with full voice conversations over the Internet with someone in Russia in real time. Yet, a mine superintendent must jump through hoops to have a private conversation with the front line supervisor underground. "Is Joe around anywhere?" If Joe hears the message, he will respond. If not, who knows? Maybe he&apos;s hurt. Maybe he&apos;s not. Where is Joe? Nobody really knows, and that is scary. Today, surface knows that the workers disappeared into the cage at 7:00 a.m. They also know that the workers will probably and hopefully return at 3:00 p.m. Is there not a better way to handle this? With such a complex industry, it seems as if, for the most part, the introduction of new technology into mining has either been overlooked or has been met with some resistance. It is time to step back, look at the process, and see how it can be improved. Key areas of focus will be safety, productivity, dependability, and cost-effectiveness.

Installation of flotation equipment is a lengthy and intricate process involving conceptual design, detailed design and layout, equipment installation, equipment commissioning and handover prior to the plant commencing operation. During these steps, mistakes are often made that lead to increased costs and/or schedule delays in bringing the new equipment online.This paper presents a series of recommendations for the installation and commissioning of flotation equipment to minimise mistakes and ensure that plant production commences efficiently with a minimum of resources. The advice herein is based on lessons learnt from recent flotation equipment commissioning. ACCORDING to the records, Phelps Dodge made its original entry into the production of copper in the oldest copper mines of Arizona at Morenci in 1881. The ore body now being mined as the Morenci open-pit, as outlined by churn-drill holes, diamond-drill holes, and underground workings, is estimated to yield 230,000,000 tons of ore averaging 1.06 per cent copper. This development will add 2,500,000 tons of copper to the 900,000 tons already produced in the district. Some five years ago preliminary development of the ore body began, with big-scale production planned including the erection of a new treatment plant to be built near the mine. Inasmuch as the Morenci open-pit was an entirely new project this required the grading of roads, establishment of mining benches, construction of railroad grades, building of railroad tracks, erection of shops, as well as the purchase of the necessary equipment to satisfactorily and economically maintain the schedules of production forecast. Along with the preparation of the main ore body it was also desirable to mine and deliver to an experimental mill a relatively small daily tonnage of typical ore.

Project delivery in our current market is not as efficient as it could be. Industry at large (both client and consultant), is diligently following the engineer, procure, construct, manage (EPCM) or engineer, procure, construct (EPC) delivery models and not necessarily appreciating the underlying principles that make them the effective tools they were to start with. We often misinterpret project management with EPCM and end up with a literal and superficial interpretation instead of the disciplined risk reduction and business value capture exercise it is intended to be. One of these underlying principles is the project team as resource or commodity depending on which perspective we follow. Some of us understand this principle only too well and succumb to the temptation to take advantage of the imbalance in the understanding of EPCM by selling bodies and hours. Value and return on investment do not always come into the equation. The latecomers and aspirants are struggling with this as a barrier of entry into this lucrative market, since as we all know - people as commodity was becoming and still is a scarce resource. Clients are also waking up and asking why 1000 engineers on the floor are better than 100, when engineering design in all aspects of industry, new technology aside, is mature. Why is it that we start with a clean sheet of paper with every project or that neighbours in the same industry segment and location just happen to have completely unique conditions and circumstances that require totally original design (Local conditions aside)? The answers to this question appear when we explore the role of the project team and how it is structured. We will need to investigate team culture and levers for success. Then we will formulate a business case for a team to be able to follow traditional project management practices with EPCM delivery models but yet end up with an alternative look, feel and result. An outcome where more input is not necessarily better and the client and consultant both are aligned with success measured in dollars and a win-win outcome for both parties.

"IntroductionAgrium’s history in fertilizer production and marketing goes back to 1931. Today, Agrium Inc. is a world leader in the production, distribution, and marketing of fertilizers and related products to the agricultural industry. Agrium is the largest North American producer of nitrogen fertilizers, a major producer of phosphate and potash fertilizers, and a world leader in fertilizer wholesale distribution and retail marketing. The mine at Kapuskasing is located some 40 km southwest of Kapuskasing, Ontario (Fig. 1). It has been developed to supply high-quality, low-cost phosphate rock to the company’s Redwater, Alberta facility, where it is an ingredient in ammonium phosphate fertilizer production. The Kapuskasing mine is the only phosphate mine in Canada and will rank as one of the highest-grade phosphate mines in the world (Clark and Duncan, 1999). Apatite is the principal ore mineral mined at the Kapuskasing Phosphate Operations.GeologyThe first record of exploration in the area was from a program executed by Continental Copper Mines in 1955 which evaluated the magnetic anomaly located in the Cargill and Cumming townships for its base metal potential. Intermittent exploration of the base metal potential of this magnetic anomaly continued in the following years, until the phosphate potential of the area was first examined in 1974 by International Minerals Corporation which recognized the presence of a layer of apatite sands overlying the carbonatite host rocks.The local geology consists of a core complex of multi-phased carbonatite rocks which are surrounded by a ring of pyroxenite, and have provided a U-Pb age date of 1907 Ma ± 4 (Sage, 1988). These two rock types are in turn situated within quartz diorite gneisses that form a large portion of the Kapuskasing Structural Zone (Fig. 2). The carbonatite host rock is sub-divided into two sub-types: sovite and rauhaugite. The sovite is a medium- to coarse-grained, white, banded rock in which calcite is the dominant carbonate species and it includes accessory minerals such as phlogopite, magnetite, clinohumite, apatite, olivine, pyrrhotite, and amphibole. Apatite can reach 15% abundance in this rock type (Sage, 1988). In sharp contrast to the sovite, the rauhaugite appears as a massive, fine-grained, dense, beige to tan-coloured rock in which dolomite is the dominant carbonate species. Phosphate values can range to 14% P2O5 in the rauhaugite."
