The die pressing of brass may be described as a method of producing irregularly shaped parts of brass and other copper alloys by hot deformation in a die under pressure. Die pressing of brass was first developed as an improvement on sand castings in order to obtain irregularly shaped articles of brass with superior surfaces, a closer tolerance in dimensions, a denser structure, freedom from porosity and elimination of the relatively large amount of scrap invariably attached to sand castings. The freedom from sandy surfaces with consequent greater tool life in machining operations was also recognized as well as elimination of losses due to the uncovering of blowholes in machining operations. Die pressing also gave alloys of superior strength. Die pressings today are made from extruded rod or shapes, according to design of the part to be made. The greater number of pressings are made from round rod, because of its relatively lower cost and ease of handling. The rod is first sheared or sawed into desired lengths, the diameter of rod used and length of "slug" or "rivet" depending upon ultimate weight and shape of the die-pressed part to be made and design of die. The dimensions of the slug are figured so as to give the minimum amount of scrap to be sheared from the pressing as it comes from the die. Extruded shapes having I, T or X sections are often used when the finished part is to have a similar shape or heavy sections are joined by relatively light sections of considerable length. A rod bent in the shape of a U is also used on occasion, for similar reasons. Proper shearing of the slugs is of considerable importance. The sheared ends of the slugs should be as flat and straight as possible. Improperly sheared ends having an angle to the axis of the bar or a rough, uneven surface are liable to give folds or laps in the finished pressing and proportionately high rejections. The property of shearing varies considerably with different alloys and should be considered in the selection of a material for a given part. I HAVE now the duty—the very pleasant duty—to perform, of presenting to the Hon. Abram S. Hewitt the Bessemer gold medal for distinguished services to the iron and steel trade. When this matter was brought under consideration in London it was well known that, as Mr. Hewitt would be the first to acknowledge, there is more than one man in America upon whom we would gladly have cm ferred this distinction, and to whom this merit might be justly at tributed ; but Mr. Hewitt has been long known to our distinguished members on the other side of the Atlantic as one of the most active minds in the investigation of new methods of manufacture, and one of the most enterprising metallurgists on this side of the Atlantic. Well, gentlemen, we proposed to Mr. Hewitt that he should receive this gold medal, but I think it is quite right, and is his due, that I should state that he at once declined to receive it; and he declined in a manner which rendered it impossible to any one but very per sistent friends and very obstinate Englishmen to refuse. When we heard that our American friends had conferred once more upon Mr. Hewitt the distinction of President of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, and particularly with reference to our contem plated visit, and when we heard that he had been elected unani mously to that position, we felt that we had received the stamp of approval from this side. Gentlemen, as I said before, Mr. Hewitt has long been known to many of us in England as an advocate of scientific education. A report which he made of the metallurgical products at the Paris Exposition in 1867 was one of the matters which drew very clearly and distinctly the attention of the English iron and steel trade to the necessity of further improvement in our technical education as to iron and steel; and it was one of those beginnings which led ultimately to the foundation of the Iron and Steel Institute. Oil and gas and their derivatives continue to be stable products in West Virginia. In the midst of the cataclysmic happenings of 1930 to 1934, which have swept away banks and practically destroyed many other enterprises of presumably nonspeculative character, the possession of a royalty or working interest in a few old oil or gas wells has prevented disaster in literally thousands of homes. These old wells yield their daily quotas of basic commodities, which the public must have. Fortunately, the facilities of disposal in the Appalachian Province are so ample and well managed that the owner of such equities may be reasonably certain that his proportionate share of existing markets will be afforded him without much effort on his part. In most cases these investments are free from encumbrance or hypothecation, therefore the main uncertainty is the date of ultimate exhaustion at the source. Generally, this is known to be fairly remote. The net result has been that individual owners part with such investments only as a last resort. In sharp contrast to the action of the small owner of wells or royalties who has prudently refrained from jeopardizing his rather certain income by drilling new wells that may be failures, or of which the product may not be needed for the moment, has been the plight of various promotional enterprises in natural gas. Many of these ventures have been operated by amateurish remote control and practically all have been overloaded from the start with bonds and debentures, which could only be satisfied in a rising and expanding market; and with operating costs that have been exceedingly high because of widely scattered producing units and large overheads. Many of these promotions are now in receivership or bankruptcy and in various instances the original units have been recaptured by former owners and have again become profitable by reason of personal operation and elimination of all forms of overhead expense. New Development In 1934, the State issued 524 permits for drilling. According to the trade journals, 553 wells were completed, with 184 oil wells, 274 gas wells and 95 dry holes (Table 3).

Diagnosis of the surface chemical factors playing a part in flotation separation of a value sulfide phase requires measurement of the hydrophobic and hydrophilic species that are statistically different between the concentrate and tail streams. Statistical methods, based on the monolayer-sensitive time of flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) technique, have been developed towards this ultimate aim by measuring hydrophobic species (collector ions, dimers and metal complexes, polysulfides) as well as hydrophobic metal ions, precipitates and added depressant species. Reliable identification of specific mineral particles is central to this statistical analysis. A chalcopyrite/pyrite/ sphalerite mineral mixture conditioned at pH 9 for 20 minutes to study transfer of Cu from chalcopyrite via solution to the other two mineral surfaces, since this mechanism can be responsible for their inadvertent flotation in copper recovery, showed no statistical difference in the copper intensities on pyrite and sphalerite (selected from Fe and Zn images) after this conditioning. Principal component analysis (PCA) identifies combinations of factors strongly correlated (positively or negatively) in images or spectra from sets of data. In images, PCA selects these correlations from the mass spectra recorded at each of 256 ¦ 256 pixels in a selected area of particles. In the image mode, PCA has proved to be a much better method of selecting particles by mineral phase with clearer definition of particle boundaries due to multi-variable recognition. It has clearly separated a statistical difference in copper intensities between the sphalerite and pyrite phases. The PCA method has been applied to concentrate and tails samples collected from the Inco Matte Concentrator demonstrating extensive CuOH and NiOH transfer between the chalcocite (Cc) and heazlewoodite (Hz) minerals. Statistical differences illustrate the important discriminating depressant action of NiOH in flotation despite the activation of Hz by Cu transfer. The adsorption of the collector at specifically-identified Cu sites has been elucidated by the study. Importantly, the statistical analysis has been able to confirm some mechanisms and deny others proposed to control recovery and selectivity giving more focus on the control factors.

Any information that will increase the accuracy of our knowledge of the conditions prevailing in petroleum reservoirs should be of direct value in the determination of the proper operating technique as well as in the estimation of reserves and of ultimate production. The obvious method of obtaining this information is by studying a sample of the reservoir rock and its contents. In any such study, the problem of primary importance and maximum difficulty is that of getting the core to the surface in such a manner that its original fluid content is undisturbed, which has so far proved to be an impossible task. Though it might be rash to say this will never be done, it is certainly safe to assume that a, method for the recovery of a core at the surface in its undisturbed original state may not be developed in the immediate future, and certainly will not be forthcoming without a great deal of costly experimentation. Therefore any information that may be obtained that will help to correlate the state of a core (its fluid saturation) at the surface with its condition at the time it was drilled should be of value to the petroleum industry. The experiments described in this paper were undertaken with the purpose of determining, if possible, any relationship that might exist between the saturation of a core at the surface and its original fluid content. No consideration has been given to the question of contamination by penetration of drilling water, since this problem has been extensively studied by other investigators.1-3 Furthermore, it was regarded as outside the scope of these experiments, which were concerned only with the effect of pressure reduction upon the liquid content of cores. In an experimental study of this sort involving a large number of variables, accurate control of all factors is very important. The essential and obvious procedure is to vary systematically one factor or condition while keeping all the others constant, which necessarily involves a rather protracted and sometimes tedious experimental program. Owing to the nature of the die-casting process, fresllly cast alloys are undoubtedly not at equilibrium from the standpoint of alloy phase relationships. After casting, therefore, they tend to undergo phase changes, with the ultimate effeet of reaching a state of equilibrium at the aging temperature, beyond which no fnrther change takes place. This phase alteration undoubtedly is one of the primary causes of the changes in dimensions and physical properties that zinc-alloy die castings undergo during aging. It is planned to report on this problem in a series of papers of which this is the first. The writers have made a study of commercial zinc die-casting alloys over a period of several years, utilizing the X-ray diffraction technic of determining the phase composition changes in the alloys. Up to the present, two principal phase changes have been observed which are capable of causing dimensional changes: (I) the segregation of secondary constituents from the zinc-base solid solution and (2) the beta aluminum-zinc decomposition. The latter is the subject of the present paper and studies on the former will be reported upon at a future time. Scope of Study In the present investigation a special technic for the study of the beta phase in zinc-alloy die castings has been developed, making possible the determination of the period of existence of the beta phase after casting. The pure beta constituent and its decomposition have been studied in detail. The effect of magnesium and copper on the velocity of the decomposition is reported. The heat of decomposition, the eutectoid temperature arid the accompanying density change have been measured. The density change lias been calculated from data on crystal structure and the result thus obtained has been compared with the actual change.

In determining what kind of pourer should be adopted for the works of the Moctezuma Copper Co. at Nacozari, Sonora, Mexico, certain considerations imposed by local conditions had to be taken into account. Water.—During most of the year the water-supply is abundant for all purposes, but it dwindles rapidly when the dry season sets in, reaching a minimum flow which is entirely undergrouad. It was evident, that with the greatest care in keeping down the unavoidable loss of water in milling and smelting, these operations and hence the capacity of the works mould ultimately be limited for about two months of the year by the small watersupply available at the period of minimum flow. Transportation.—The nearest railway terminus was in Arizona, at the international boundary-line; and the price of supplies at that point would be enhanced at Nacozari by the additional cost of a 90-mile wagon-haul. During the rainy season, transport to Nacozari was much impeded, and at times made impossible, by the condition of the roads. Hence, to insure continuous operation at the works, it would be necessary to provide for hauling the year's supplies, including fuel for power and coke for smelting, in less than eleven months. In other words, the average freight delivered daily at the works should be at least 10 per cent. more than the average daily consumption. For moderate quantities of freight, pack-carriage by burros is astonishingly cheap. But it has a capacity-limit which is generally very soon reached. A 200-lb. load, and 10 miles a day, 5 with and 5 without load, is the full capacity of a burro. This means one burro per ton-mile of the round trip; and,

This paper describes successful application of driven tapered-steel-pipe piles for two large-scale projects in the New York metropolitan area: Rego Park Mall, Rego Park, N.Y. and 164 Kent Avenue, Brooklyn, N.Y. The combination of side friction and end bearing resistance produced by tapered-steel-pipe piles has been well-recognized as greater than the side friction and end bearing resistance by pipe piles. Forty-four tapered piles were driven and tested at these two sites. Design pile load for the two sites was 260 kips for Rego Park Mall and 400 kips and 300 kips for 164 Kent Avenue. To measure the pile-drive hammer efficiency, the compressive stress in the pile, and to estimate the ultimate bearing capacity of the pile, dynamic load testing using a Pile Driving Analyzer (PDA) was conducted on index piles at the sites. Subsequent to the field testing, data analysis using the Case Pile Wave Analysis Program (CAPWAP) was conducted. Restrike PDA analysis and full-scale static load tests were performed on the selected test piles. Test piles at the project sites exhibited significant time-dependent increases in bearing capacity caused by the effects of "set-up" or "soil freeze." The dissipation of excess pore-water pressure in the soil, which had been disturbed and remolded by driven pile, was generally considered the primary cause of set-up. The increase at the subject sites ranged from 100 to 300 percent of the capacity measured at the initial driving. This paper discusses the results of various types of load testing on tapered piles and the set-up effects by comparing PDA test results acquired during and after pile driving. Finally, an empirical relationship for the New York metropolitan area has been offered for quantifying set-up.

With the advent of the First World Conference on Sampling and Blending (WCSB1) in Denmark in 2003 and the subsequent biannual meetings, together with other sampling conferences held on a regular basis, the central tenets of sound sampling practice and theory are spreading throughout the minerals industry. End-users and project houses, or groups who execute the projects, are all now better-informed about the principles of ?correct? sampling and preparation. To support this, many large mining companies now have their own in-house champion who will advise and ensure that the supply of sampling equipment is correct in terms of design and application, which further contributes to improved metallurgical accounting. The presence of a sampling champion also ensures that consistent and acceptable standards in regard to sampling practice are maintained throughout the group. This has, in turn, placed a greater degree of responsibility on the shoulders of sampling equipment suppliers, in terms of their equipment designs and product offerings, as well as applications knowledge for effective installation of equipment on client plants. This paper attempts to highlight the significant challenges that sampling equipment manufacturers often face with regard to complying with the newly understood requirements of best practice and sampling equipment design. Manufacturers invariably face issues with end-users or project houses, including project cost control, restricted headroom for samplers in plant layouts, and a lack of knowledge in certain quarters. These all have a potentially negative effect on the final outcome of a proposed sampling solution or implemented project. In reality, what is intended by all parties and what is ultimately installed are at times very different, with undesirable consequences for all concerned. Against this challenging background, there are, however, a number of instances where intent and implementation are complementary, with very satisfactory results. Expansive soil formations can be found throughout the United States. When subjected to wetting, many of these formations have the potential to swell and exert large uplift forces which can significantly damage lightly-loaded structures. Designing an economical foundation that can resist uplift forces is critical to prevent damage to these structures. The current solutions to control uplift due to swelling soils, such as over-excavation and replacement of the expansive material, or drilled shafts, can be costly and problematic. Piles made from recycled polymer materials may provide a solution. Due to a lower coefficient of friction along the interface than piles made from traditional materials, solid recycled plastic piles can allow expansive soils to move nearly independently from the pile when wetted. This results in a much smaller magnitude of uplift force being transferred to the structure which minimizes the risk of significant structural damage. This paper presents the preliminary results of research conducted on the use of recycled plastic piles in an expansive shale environment. The preliminary phase of the project involved the installation of six 13 in. (330 mm) diameter recycled plastic piles at a test site on the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology campus. The piles varied in length from 15 ft. to 25 ft. (4.6m to 7.6 m). Two of the piles were subjected to a full-scale compression load test in order to determine ultimate capacity, while the additional four piles are being subjected to long-term monitoring of uplift movement. A cast-in-place concrete pile, with a diameter of 6 in. (152 mm) and length of 15 ft. (4.6 m), was also installed at the test site for monitoring. The preliminary results indicate that the use of solid recycled plastic piles is a viable alternative for support of lightly-loaded structures in expansive soil environments.

The monitoring of rock slopes is a common procedure in the management of hazards associated with slope instability. Slope stability radar has become widely accepted as the state-of-the-art method for management of hazards associated with unstable slopes in open pit mines. This is confirmed by the rapid adoption of the technology since inception in mid 2003, with over 70 GroundProbe slope stability radars now in use at open pit operations throughout the World. The use of a monitoring system such as slope radar to identify slope hazards is only part of the solution to minimise the consequences associated with slope instability. The presence of the hazard must also be effectively communicated to the mine personnel, so that the correct response to the hazard can be enacted, and the risk mitigated to an acceptable level. In some surface mines, due to the geotechnical characteristics of the rock mass, hazards can develop rapidly; with slopes progressing from stability to ultimate collapse in just hours. In these situations, it is vital that efficient systems are developed to evacuate the area of the pit affected. Such a system has been developed by GroundProbe in South Africa, with the vital driving force for the project being provided by the Anglo Platinum Mogalakwena mine operation based at Mokopane. The mine based development of the system was perceived as an essential aspect in the development of the successful system. From an early stage, the mine provided essential input on both hardware and software developments to allow the system to be rapidly integrated into the mining operation. This paper describes the pit evacuation alarm system that was developed and discussed the benefits obtained from a mine based development program.

This paper was written in conjunction with the work being undertaken by the Technical Committees on Classification of Coal, and an effort has been made to compile information relative to the use of coal for stationary steam generation in order to use this information to assist the Committee on Classification of Coal for the ultimate purpose of elimination of losses both by the reduction of individual effort and waste in the consumption of material. Under the auspices of the National Association of Purchasing Agents, a questionnaire was drawn up to develop this information from stationary steam plants throughout the United States in order to consolidate the information developed from the many hundreds of boiler tests on coals consumed by various coal-burning equipment. These questionnaires covered: 1. The company reporting, location and method of delivery to the plant. 2. Complete coal data, including description of coals used (with sufficient space to include first, second and third preference) on source of coal used, complete analysis and factors affecting choice of coal used. 3. Plant data, divided into: (a,) hand-fired, (b) overfeed stokers, (c) underfeed stokers, (d) traveling grate stokers, (e) pulverized coal; and included complete description of furnace data, draft data, coal-burning rate, type of stoker, type of pulverizer, efficiency data and remarks. The questionnaire was drawn up by consultation with various combllstion engineers, including B. J. Cross, Test Engineer of the Combustion Engineering Co., W. H. Fulweiler, of the United Gas Improvement Co. and the U. S. Bureau of Mines. In all, 11,538 copies of the questionnaire have been distributed, of which 4369 were sent in duplicate. COAL EXPLORATION Coal exploration may be defined as the acquisition of data necessary to define and acquire a block of coal which can be mined at a profit. Unlike ore minerals, coal resources are widespread and relatively abundant with supply exceeding demand in almost every case. Thus simple discovery of coal is generally not enough. The chemical and physical variability of individual coal seams, the capital intensive nature of coal mine development, and the changing patterns of utilization require that a multiphase, three-dimensional evaluation be made of each potential reserve. Factors which must be investigated include not only the quantity and quality of the coal but also the geologic, hydrologic, and engineering characteristics of the seam and its surrounding strata. Acquisition of property to provide a secure base for exploration and mine development is equal in importance to the geologic and engineering programs. The successful development of a coal reserve requires that control of coal and, in the case of a strip mine, the surface be in the form of contiguous blocks of sufficient size to support mining. PHASES OF EXPLORATION The high capital risks of coal exploration and land acquisition dictate that a multiphase program be utilized to minimize initial risk. In such a program, phased development of the data insures that each increase in capital expenditures will be justified by a corresponding increase in the level of confidence in the ultimate success of the project. Each phase is designed to provide sufficient data and property control to facilitate the decision whether to proceed to the next phase of development or to discontinue the program (Table 1). "Washwater 'Finger' sprays were installed and tested in the copper/nickel separation circuit at Strathcona Mill to improve flotation capacities and related metallurgical performances. The new spray design features submerged sideways introduction of wash water into the flotation froth through nozzles at the end of vertical pipes which are suspended from a header above the froth. This maximizes the effective cross sectional area of flotation vessels while maintaining effective froth cleaning and a desirably high density of the concentrate slurry. The plant tests gave increases of copper concentrate production rates of 17% to 20% for conventional cells and 16% to 20% in column flotation at target grades of 29% to 30% copper and of less than 0.5% nickel. Basic considerations and concepts of tests and evaluation procedures are described.IntroductionMeeting flotation concentrate grade targets at maximum production rates and recoveries is a challenge all too familiar to operators of base metal ore concentrators. Frothwashing is an option to improve grade/recovery performance by minimizing entrainment of impurities into the concentrate, which is commonly known since the sixties (Kaya & Laplante, 1989). It has been recommended for the flotation of sulphides and industrial minerals alike (Kaya & Laplante, 1989; Miller, 1969; Heinrich, 1989) and has found its ultimate application in flotation columns (Finch & Dobby, 1990). The washwater addition in a flotation column is most evenly distributed over the column's cross-sectional area thus ensuring almost complete displacement of feed water from the froth by a countercurrent washwater flow -provided, a positive bias is maintained. Therefore, flotation columns are ideal for cleaning flotation. However, there is usually less room for boosting the concentrate production capacity by increasing airflow or slurry level then with conventional cells because of the smaller cross-sectional area available."

MR. Theodore D. Rand has made some interesting observations on the serpentines of Chester and Delaware counties, Penna., in which he suggests that the outcrops of this rock are detached from each other, and that while a comparatively narrow belt, running nearly east and west, mill include them all, the strike of each outcrop differs considerably from the direction of this narrow belt; and that it results that these isolated exposures exist on the map, as it were, in echelon, the easternmost end of each lying northwest of the western extremity of its neighbor. As he elsewhere remarks, this is important, if established, and the writer spent a day or two recently on the ground in the study of this phenomenon. One thing would seem to follow from such a state of facts, viz., that this serpentine at least must have been of secondary origin, for it is difficult to conceive of a rock which occurs intercalated in numerous horizons of a different formation, and agreeing with the latter in bedding, unless the former were an altered product of the latter. It is true that one might account for it by the supposition of an original unconformable deposit, which had been broken by a number of faults and distorted by throws to the northwest; but this hypothesis would do violence to the observed facts relating to the measures along with which the serpentine occurs, and in which no such distortion has been observed. * Thus for determining, by evaporative test, the calorific power of a coal, the ultimate constitution of which is known, it is requisite, that, besides the quantity of coal consumed and the weight of the water evaporated, the temperature and chemical composition of the escaping gases, or gaseous residue, shall be quantitatively determined, the same as solid residues of ash and unconsumed fuel. In observance of such requirements, the Heizversuchstation of Munich has been in operation since 1879. This consists of a permanent boiler plant, constructed on the principle of the calorimeter, with special provision for avoiding errors from loss of heat—snch, namely, as arise from radiation and conduction, and from the varying proportions of water in steam.—Muck. "Two recent occurrences in Western metal mines in each of which 3 men were killed due to breathing fumes from explosives, have aroused keen interest among mining men not only as to the exact cause of such accidents, but also as to possible preventive measures.In sinking the forty five degree incline Marsh *haft near Burke, Idaho, on May 13, 1920, a round of holes containing about sixty pounds of 40 per cent gelatin explosive was blasted by the night shift upon leaving at 11:30 P.M. It was customary for the night shift to leave compressed air blowers open at bottom of abaft until the compressor was shut down slightly before midnight. Presumably this was not done on the night of the lath as the fumes were so heavy in the shaft bottom on the morning of the 14th that at about 8 o'clock, Superintendent Bergen and one of the shaft men, on reaching the shaft bottom, were overcome and fell from the bucket into the sump containing about six feet of water; and when two other men went down in the bucket a few minutes later to investigate, one also fell into the sump and the other was barely able to roach the shaft collar. The three bodies were later on recovered from the sump.At 400 P.M., June 10, 1920, at the Dominion Mine, Colville, Washington, a round of 11 holes containing about fifteen pounds of 60 per cent nitro¬glycerine explosive was blasted in a fifty degree raise about fifty feet above the main tunnel level by the shift going off for the night. in this mine it was the practice not to try to blow out the fumes until just before the shift went to work the next morning, Although no work was being done on the night shift, one of the raise men, curious to ascertain the effect of the shots, about 7:45 P.M., wandered into the mine (which was a tunnel only a few hundred feet in length), and was missed by one of his companions about an hour later. When three men tried to remove the body of the inquisitive miner, two of them were also overcome; ultimately these two and the first man were removed from the point at which all were asphyxiated, which was practically at the foot of themaise."

Activated carbon is proven to be able to catalyze arsenic oxidation in aqueous solution under acidic conditions. A commercially available granular coconut shell based activated carbon (AC) has been evaluated for catalysis of arsenic oxidation in this study. The rapid small-scale column test (RSSCT) has been developed to simulate and predict the performance of a carbon-based arsenic treatment system in a pilot scale reactor. Effects of residence time, aeration rate, and initial arsenic concentration in the influent solution on the AC catalysis of arsenic oxidation under dynamic and continuous conditions were studied by manipulating these parameters during RSSCTs. The effectiveness of the AC on arsenic oxidation was examined over the course of constant diffusivity based RSSCT operation. Residence time and initial arsenite concentration are proven to be the most effective impacting parameters on the arsenic oxidation process. For the 218 min residence time, the highest steady-state arsenic oxidation efficiency achieved was 98% with 1 g/L As(III) being treated at pH=1 under 0.05 L/min oxygen aeration. In a long-running RSSCT, the oxidation efficiency did not seem to deteriorate over a course of 666 hours operation, corresponding to 13986 mL total influent throughput volume. INTRODUCTION Arsenic is toxic to both animals and plants and inorganic arsenicals are proven carcinogens in humans. The increased extraction of low grade and complex mineral resources has introduced high ratios of arsenic into metallurgical processes. Discharge of arsenic by acid mine drainage resulting from mining activities has added intensive pressure on the need for proper treatment (Lawrence & Higgs, 1999). Since trivalent arsenite is more toxic and has lower affinity to solid surfaces for adsorption, many treatment systems initiate with an oxidation step to convert arsenite to arsenate and reach the ultimate immobilization of arsenic by the following precipitation of arsenate (Nazari, Radzinski, & Ghahreman, 2016). Scorodite precipitation has been studied extensively as a means of arsenic immobilization due to its high stability and negligible potential of releasing arsenic (Filippou & Demopoulos, 1997). As a stable ferric arsenate mineral, crystalline scorodite can contain up to 30 wt% arsenic (Paktunc, Dutrizac, & Gertsman, 2008). Arsenic must be in its pentavalent oxidation state in order for scorodite to be precipitated via oxidizing ferrous ions (Clancy, Hayes, & Raskin, 2013).

Various estimates have been made as 60 the percentage of oil left in a field after the wells have become so small that it is no longer practical to produce them. Engineers have given the matter much study and can substantiate their figures by data taken from fields from the Appalachians to California. The average oil sand has a porosity of about 20 per cent., which gives a capacity per acre-foot of approximately 1500 bbl. The sand thickness in Oklahoma pools averages 20 ft. With 20 per cent, porosity and a 20-ft. sand thickness, the capacity per acre is 30,000 bbl., yet these pools will seldom yield more than 5000 bbl. to the acre. These figures gupport the theory that at least 50 per cent. of the oil remains in a sand after all known methods to recover it have been used. Certainly we can never recover all the oil, unless in years to come oil becomes so rare and yet so necessary that the price will justify sinking shafts into the abandoned fields and regular mining methods of drifting and stoping. However, with improved methods of production and conservation of the natural agencies of expulsion, we should be able to increase recovery. It is with this in mind that this paper, relating to the effect of back pressure on wells, is presented. Except in the fields where production is caused by hydrostatic pressure, the chief agency for getting oil out of the sand into the hole is the gas that occurs with the oil. After the pressure has declined, probably gravity also is a factor, but not an important one. With a given amount of oil in a sand and a given amount of gas occurring with the oil, the ratio of gas volume per barrel of oil is the key to the ultimate recovery from that sand. Our efforts should be along lines that will lower this ratio and make the gas, the agency given us by nature, do its work better and yield more of the oil, of which it is a part. T. E. I BELIEVE that my work would surely be host a seed without fit and that I would fail in that cause which disposed me to satisfy your request to write and form this work [75] if while laboring on it I did not tell you of the art of casting, since it is a necessary means to very many ends. I realize even more that I must tell as much as seems necessary since I have already demonstrated the methods of recognizing the natures and locations of the metals, of smelting and reducing them to their ultimate perfection, and finally have taught you to make their associations and alloys. It is especially necessary since this art and work is not well known, so that no one can practice it who is not, so to speak, born to it, or who does not have much talent and good judgment. For this reason and also because it is closely related to sculpture, whose arms are the support of its life, it is very highly esteemed. In order to describe the whole art in every part, I say that the greatest labors of both mind and body are required for its operations in the beginning, middle, and end. It is indeed true that these labors are endured with pleasure because they are associated with a certain expectation of novelty, produced by the greatness of art and awaited with desire, particularly since the artificer sees that it is an art pleasing and delightful even to ignorant men. As a result, as if ensnared, he is often unable to leave the place of work. To conclude: The outcome of this art is dependent upon and subject to many operations which, if they are not all carried out with great care and diligence and well observed throughout, convert the whole into nothing, and the result becomes like its name [cast away]. Therefore, having considered this work many times, with its extraordinary obstacles and the bodily labors heavy as a stevedore's, instead of exalting it with praise, I wish to say that it is such that a man of noble birth, even though he be gifted or be drawn to it by pleasure, should not practice it and could not unless he is accustomed to the sweat and many discomforts which it brings.
