This report presents the results of a 7-year Bureau of Mines program to review, revise, and make an effective engineering tool of the microseismic method of determining the stability of rock structures. The program consisted of developing new microseismic equipment and data analysis techniques and extensive field investigations to demonstrate the effectiveness and potential of the broad-band microseismic method. The guidelines for choosing the components of a microseismic system are presented along with approximate cost figures. Different microseismic systems are discussed, including completely automated systems. Procedures for conducting microseismic investigations and analyzing microseismic data are discussed in detail. Field situations which show the full value of the microseismic technique as an engineering tool are described.

The social economy, or public interest, and national defense require wise development and efficient use of the oil and gas resources of the United States. In this development and use, and in the prevention of economic and physical waste of oil and gas, the objectives of the petroleum and natural-gas industries, the Government (Federal, State, and local), and the public are the same. Differences of viewpoint generally have originated in the failure of one of the triad to have a clear or complete understanding of the motives behind the activities of the other component groups or full knowledge of what each is trying to accomplish. The Unites States Bureau of Mines through its petroleum and natural-gas division makes technologic and scientific investigations pertaining to recovery,3 preparation, refining, and use of oil and natural gas with the view of reducing waste, increasing safety and efficiency and aiding economic development.

The Bureau of Mines has evaluated the potential availability of silver from 436 mines and deposits in 41 market economy countries (MEC?s) comprising five major economic categories of deposits: predominantly silver deposits and predominantly zinc, lead, copper, and gold deposits. This study evaluated the long-term cost and availability of primary silver production from 53 producing and 13 nonproducing predominantly silver properties in 11 MEC's and estimated the total recoverable silver from 370 properties as a coproduct or byproduct of zinc, lead, copper, or gold production. This study resulted in estimates of a demonstrated resource of 5.99 billion tr oz of recoverable silver as of January 1984. Of this total, 23.5 pet is in the 66 mines and deposits classified as predominantly silver properties. The largest quantity of recoverable silver, 43.9 pct, lies in the 121 properties classified as predominantly zinc, with 26.5 pct in 120 properties classified as predominantly copper, 4.1 pet in 21 predominantly lead properties, and 2.0 pct in 108 predominantly gold properties. At current silver prices, the economics of silver production favor silver that is a byproduct or coproduct of zinc, lead, copper, or gold, and much of the silver production in the United States from the predominantly silver mines is at an economic disadvantage in comparison with silver production in other countries.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the mineral resources of the Upper Missouri River Basin as a part of a comprehensive water and related land resources study by six Bureaus of the Department of the Interior, coordinated by the Department's Missouri River Basin Field Committee. The mineral resource study covers an area of about 18,000 square miles within the Great Plains physiographic province of central Montana. Exposed Formations in the plains are chiefly flat-lying Cretaceous sediments. Plutonic rocks crop out in the central parts of the mountain uplifts, with steeply tilted Paleozoic sediments exposed around the margins. Oil and gas have been produced from several fields in the study area; total value exceeds $45 million. Coal-bearing formations of Upper Jurassic and Cretaceous age cover approximately 45 percent of the study area. Total production of coal since 1880 has been between 40 and 50 million tons, exceeding $75 million in value. Total metal production has been about $52.5 million. Industrial mineral production from 1925 through 1960, is valued at $24 million.

This report summarizes the results from the first year of an anticipated multiphase program to develop improved coal mining equipment which utilize the CAVIJET? cavitating water jet method. This laboratory parametric study demonstrated the advantages of cavitating jets over non­cavitating jets in cutting coal, by producing comparable slot depths at one-fifth of the operating pressure, at better than one-half of the spe­cific energy. These results suggest that CAVIJET-augmented mining devices can be developed with compact, low-pressure pumps. Thus, CAVIJET should be capable of operating with safer, lighter support equipment, while providing all of the advantages (reduction of dust and sparks, reduced damage to cutters) of conventional hydraulic mining methods.

The XVIth International Conference on Coal Mine Safety Research was divided into eight half-day technical sessions. In accord with the established practice of these conferences, at each session, presentation of the papers was followed by a discussion period. Questions and comments submitted in writing to the session chairman were answered or discussed by the authors of the relevant papers or by their representatives. These discussions were tape-recorded in the original language of the speaker and subsequently translated into English when necessary. Questions to which no answer was available at the time and a few comments that exceeded the scope of the session have been omitted.

WITH the movement of American capital into foreign investment, a new field of specialization for the American mining engineer is gradually opening a field hitherto entered almost wholly by chance and without full appreciation of its possibilities. Our age has been fitly called the "Age of Specialization." The special application of one's knowledge and ability to a definite and restricted branch of .his profession is purely a modern condition. Any profession, or branch of a profession or, industry, in which the problems may be segregated into definite types, calls for specializa-tion. Modern industry demands efficiency and that, reduction and ultimate annihilation of waste. Effort and time wasted by workers' on a problem with which they are not familiar is as flagrant a waste of money -the final standard-as any waste of materials. One of the subdivisions of mining engineering which is beginning to be recognized is of engineers who are clearly conversant with the particular and peculiar problems obtaining under foreign operating conditions. The need is as yet obscured, however, by the domestic prosperity of our American mining industry. The opportunity here lies more with the American engineer than with other nationals. The foreign en-gineer now in that service is not there through a realiza-tion of the special opportunities that exist, but through necessity, whereas, with the American engineer, more especially ,the recent graduate or those who will soon graduate, this is a new field to be entered wholly by choice. As a matter of fact, many engineering students will find it necessary to seek foreign service if they wish to remain in mining. Although the scope of the domes-tic industry is tremendous and there are many positions open to the junior engineer, there are not enough for the great number of graduates turned out yearly from our, mining schools. Educators tell us that less than 40 per cent. of the students in engineering schools gradu-ate; and of these but a minority continue in engineering. Even this minority is too great for our domestic. In-dustry, and although the young engineer realizes that condition after a few years he rarely seeks foreign work. A. perusal of the directory of the American Institute of Mining Engineers indicates that, but about one-half of one per cent of the Junior Associates are in positions outside of North America. Granting that most of them are still in school, the figure is surpris-ingly small.

LITTLE new oil was found in West Virginia, during 1923, but there were important discoveries of gas. Most of the large oil producers have contented themselves with pumping old wells or in drilling only enough new wells in defined territory to maintain a fairly constant production, the attitude being that no, profit is made in producing high-grade oil at a low price and that an eventual loss is sustained by draining the reserves of a limited commodity that, at some more favorable time, will be of much value. The representative of one large company said: "We have done nothing but pump old wells during 1923 and we have made no plans for 1924." Careful attention to producing wells has been the rule, there having been few abandonments; the belief is prevalent that small wells will eventually become profitable under more favorable marketing conditions. In natural gas, the opposite point of view prevails. Because of the vast capabilities of the state for producing gas, its output being ahead of all others, great systems of transportation and distribution into the markets of four adjoining states have been built and a demand has been created that no present, or apparently potential, production can satisfy. This demand has become so great that large distributing companies not only discourage new applications for service but advise old customers to install coal furnaces for auxiliary fuel; some have requested public-service commissions to grant higher 'rates against large industrial consumers than those allowed for domestic heating. The response to this known market has been a rapid increase in price, both at the well mouth and at the door of the ultimate consumer, and the industry has become so stable that the only uncertainty, or hazard, appears to be the question of the presence of gas in fair quantity in a given territory under consideration. Several oil companies have now forsaken their policy of selling gas, wells outright when drilled and ;have organized gas departments to drill for gas and to dispose of the daily output by meter to distributing corporations. With such companies and with other producers whose interest is chiefly gas, the year has been busy and profitable. Some new territory of apparently large value has been proved and deeper producing sands in old fields have been tapped.

In many fields edge water is one of the most important factors governing the production of oil. Possibly this fact is not appreciated by many producers except in so far as it may bring about a loss in production from wells drilled on the flanks of structures. In the light of artificial flooding as practiced in New York and Pennsylvania, and of the beneficial effect of natural water-flooding on many wells and leases in the Mid-Continent and elsewhere, it seems reasonable to suppose that very few phases of the petroleum industry hold greater promise for future benefit than the study and control of the natural water drive. Rate of Water Encroachment The rate of movement of water in artificially flooded areas has been referred to as so many feet per unit of time, usually from an injection well toward surrounding producing wells. This definition is vague when used in reference to the movement of natural edge water, inasmuch as such factors as sand thickness, steepness of dip and horizontal extent arc not considered. In the ultimate analysis, only the vertical component of movement affects the production of oil in the natural drive, and in order to define the rate of water encroachment more exactly, such a term as acre-fect per unit time might be used. Thus, where one well is located to each 10 acres a vertical movement of 5 ft. in the water level in a year would be defined as an encroachment of 50 acre-feet per year, and where one well is located to each 20 acres, as 100 acre-feet per year. Such a definition as this is entirely arbitrary, but it takes into consideration to a certain extent the influence of well spacing, and consequent sand drainage, on the rate of water movement. The rate of movement is considered to be an important function of water encroachment, for it is believed that the efficiency of recovery by natural water flood depends a good deal upon the rate of movement. In general, rapid encroachment is thought to effect a poor recovery because of the differential in favor of the movement of water through a sand body and the consequent tendency to trap oil in the sand. In 1953, Dr N Fisher of the Bureau of Mineral Resources, acting on behalf of the Society of Economic Geologists, which is considering the sponsoring of a uniform system of nomenclature for ore reserves, enquired from The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy whether it had ever considered this subject and particularly whether it had ever set up any standard definitions or specifications with regard to ore reserves.As this had not been done, but was thought to be desirable, the Council of The Institute appointed a Committee consisting of H H Dunkin, Associate Professor of Mining Engineering, University of Melbourne (Convenor); E A Rudd, Professor of Economic Geology, University of Adelaide; J D Campbell, Chief Geologist of Western Mining Corporation; and the writer, to consider the report on this subject.In December 1953, the Committee submitted its frrst report to the Council and this report (reproduced here as an Appendix) was widely circulated among member companies and engineers, with an invitation to comment on the proposals. A large number of replies was received and studied.After studying the replies the Committee issued a second report, in part as follows:From these replies we have learned that the suggestions made in the frrst report of the Committee are unacceptable to most of those interested, on one or all of the following grounds:a. number of categoriesb. defmition of categoriesc. nomenclature.It is also apparent that all alternatives suggested in the various replies would likewise be unacceptable to the majority of those replying.As a result, we have come to the conclusion that neither this Committee nor any other could at present and in the present state of opinion on the subject make recommendations regarding classification and nomenclature of ore reserves which would be acceptable to a sufficiently large proportion of members.It seems to us now that the objective of a widely applicable and acceptable system of classification and nomenclature, one that could be endorsed by The Institute and ultimately become standard practice in the industry, requires more than compromise between present conflicting views... it requires first a foundation of substantial agreement on the essential facts, implications and range of ore reserve estimation. This does not yet exist and it is evident that much additional analysis of present practice and opinion must be undertaken before any further systhesis is attempted.

It is an outstanding fact of Nature that many of the practical properties of substances are dependent, not on their ultimate chemical composition, but on the kind and degree of aggregation of their constituent particles. Thus, a granite boulder is unmoved by wind or water, but if reduced to a fine dust it will be blown about by the wind and washed away by the rain. Carbon in one crystalline state of aggregation (diamond) is the hardest known substance, whereas in another crystalline state (graphite) it is so soft that it is used as a lubricant. Laying too much stress on the mere chemical analysis of substances is apt to obscure the fact that the nature of the aggregation of their particles is always a factor of importance, and sometimes the most important factor. Colloid chemistry deals with matter in a very fine state of subdivision; its sphere begins with particles just a little smaller than a wave length of light and extends down until they blend into molecular dimensions. With particles of this size, such phenomena as surface tension and adsorption, which depend on the development of free surface, become enormously magnified. Thus a cube of 1 cm. edge has a surface of only 6 sq. cm.; but if it is reduced to colloidal dimensions by being cut up into cubes each having an edge of 0.01 µ (0.00003 mm.), it will yield one million, million, million (1,000,000,000,000,000,O~) such cubes, having a combined area of 600 sq. m., or 21,274 sq. ft. The tiny force with which a drop of rain clings to the window pane becomes a factor to be reckoned with, if the surface involved is increased millions of times. From the colloid-chemical viewpoint, metals and alloys may be regarded as jellies or sponge-like structures,. the viscosity or stiffness of which at ordinary temperatures is exceedingly great; and like all jellies their properties are dependent on the composition and degree of dispersion of their constituent phases. These, in turn, depend on chemical composition, mutual solubility, speed of chilling, subsequent mechanical and heat treatment, etc. In fact, in preparing metals and alloys for practical use, we remove undesirable constituents (as in the conversion of pig iron into steel), add desirable constituents (as in

Particle-size Distribution Specifications for Particulates. Feed to and finished products from size-reduction operations are defined in terms of the particulate sizes involved. It is also well to know whether the ultimate individual particle is being measured, or, if any aggregation or agglomeration of particles exists, whether this has been created by the size-reduction operation. The most complete description of a powder is given by its particle¬size distribution. This can be plotted in terms of cumulative percent oversize or undersize in relation to the diameters of particles, or it can be plotted as a distribution of the amounts present in each unit of diameter against the several diameters. It is common to employ a weight basis for percentage, but there are some data in the literature where frequency, or number of particles, is used. The basis of percent¬age, whether weight, frequency, or some less commonly used factor, should be specified, as also should be stated the diameter, its units, and preferably whether determined by sieve, settling velocity, or other¬wise. Fig. I presents two sets of distributions-ore cumulative and the other in unit intervals. The slopes of the 5-µ intervals of the cumulative curves are converted to percent per micron and plotted as a block, or histogram, from which smooth curves are derived. Powder A has a narrower, or tighter, size range for the bulk of its weight than powder B. Both materials have the same weights below and above the size marked by the arrow. Simpler treatments of distribution are possible. In some cases the significant value is the top size. Since the 100% point is dubious, some amount, as 95 or 98%, so specified, can be called top size. In other cases the percent on some sieve helps define coarseness. Merely stating that all, or all but a small percentage, passes a given sieve is inadequate for defining the true fineness or a material. Complete parti¬cle-size analysis to show the distribution is essential for most compari¬sons and calculations. Particle-Size Equations. A number of equations have been pro¬posed to correlate the quantity of a particulate material with its parti¬cle size to obtain a distribution relationship. "The effect of current reversal on two commercially manufactured electrodes (RuO2-TiO2 and IrO2-Ta2O5 coated Ti) in a chloride bearing electrolyte was evaluated. Accelerated lifetimes were found to decrease with increasing current density and increasing reversal frequency. Ru: Ti coated electrodes exhibited longer lifetimes than Ir: Ta coated electrodes even though they had one-third as much precious metal content. Chloride concentration did not affect lifetime in the range examined. Using energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), the failure mode of the electrodes was determined to be coating dissolution leading ultimately to passivation by the presumed growth of a highly resistive oxide at the coating/substrate interface.INTRODUCTIONCatalytic titanium anodes (CTAs) were developed in the 1960’s to replace graphite anodes in chlor-alkali cells. CTAs exhibited much better dimensional stability than graphite leading to lower operating potentials by promoting smaller electrode gaps and better operational efficiencies as they had to be replaced less often. CTAs are simply Ti substrates coated with precious metal oxides (such as IrO2 and RuO2) mixed with other components (such as TiO2 and TasO5) (Trasatti, 2000).CTAs are used in many other electrochemical industries, including water disinfection, wastewater treatment, cathodic protection and metal plating. RuO2 based coatings are typically used for chlorine evolution. IrO2 based coatings are for the most part utilized for oxygen evolution (Comninellis & Nerini, 1991; Forti, Olive, & De Andrade, 2001; Kotz, Stucki & Carcer, 1991; Trasatti & Lodi, 1981)"

Recognizing the dynamic nature and possible range of toxic concentrations in the impending fume cloud prior to undertaking explosive blasting can reduce potential hazards and mitigate related incidents. The scaled cloud model was formulated to predict the relevant (major) toxic components in fume clouds released by nonideal mining explosives used for surface blasting. Natural turbulence unceasingly disperses the toxic molecules, widening (inflating) the fume cloud while diluting the concentrations, ultimately rendering nonhazardous conditions. The threshold cloud size depends upon the type and quantity of total explosives used and the cloud's thermodynamic condition. Though the scaled theory works for fume clouds with irregular (odd) shape, an equivalent upright cylindrical form is useful for rendering simple riskhazard scenarios. The cylinder's projection downward on the underlying terrain yields a circular 'shadow' marking the region threatened, thereby permitting a rough estimation of the potential hazards, were the cloud to settle down there. Wind causes the cloud to drift while it expands, so the shadow travels while it grows, until the risk hazard process is truncated at the nonhazardous threshold. The overall relative fume toxicity (RFT) is taken from the traditional Russian RFT rule, which utilizes only the two fume components that tend to dominate the resultant toxicity: carbon monoxide (CO) and total nitrogen oxides (NOx). Tabulated constants that characterize the fume spectrum in the cloud model were resolved for ammonium nitrate (94%) with fuel oil (6%), ANFO-94/6, using a refined thermodynamic work-principle. Comparable results were found with the reduction factor technique, when test results from the underground fume chamber were readjusted to reflect nominal field shooting conditions.

Mount Isa Mines has four mining operations in Mt Isa with the X41 and Enterprise Mines producing copper and the Lead Mine and George Fisher producing lead zinc and silver. Each stream contributes ore to their respective concentrator at a feed rate and therefore metal ratio set out by the monthly schedule. Mine Planning and scheduling lead to a sales and operating plan (S&OP) and revenue projections which ultimately derives actual revenue /tonne and therefore cost/tonne. At Mount Isa, both the copper and lead/zinc streams produce ore from relatively new operations to be blended with material from more mature operations. It is critical to accurately predict the metal contribution from each operation in order to gauge the relative performance of each mine. Development mining ore contributions are estimated and reconciled, as are stope and bench sources. Performance is continually measured and assessed during extraction and grade adjustments are made to account for underbreak, overbreak and design modifications. It is critical to not understate or overstate the contribution from one operation relative to the other as this can produce a false picture of operational performance. Identifying process improvements are key to improving the business overall. Ore from the lead stream passes 17 measurement stations and two midstream reconciliation points before delivery to the heavy media plant (HMP), where the metallurgical circuit begins. From this point two concentrates are produced. A zinc concentrate for treatment off site and a lead concentrate for further on site processing. The lead smelter takes 100 per cent of Isa concentrates as well as a contribution from BHP-BillitonÆs Cannington Mine.

"The ecological costs related to the various optimized production schemes were calculated based on the designed ultimate pit. Moreover, the influence of the ecological costs on the selection of production schemes was discussed. In one designed pit, a series of geologically optimum pushbacks with sufficiently small increment were produced using the floating cone method founded on the principle of the highest metal content. Then all the pushbacks were reordered by the dynamic network diagram. The production scheme with the maximum NPV route was considered as the optimum one. The ecological impacts produced by mining were quantified and the ecological cost calculation models, which contain the direct eco-value loss, the indirect eco-value loss, the eco-restoration cost and the carbon emission cost were proposed. In one big open pit mine case, various production schemes were optimized and the one with maximum NPV was selected without taking into account the eco-costs. The scheme with the maximum comprehensive profit was obtained by calculating the eco-cost of each scheme. The results showed that the best scheme considered with the eco-cost was not the scheme with the maximum NPV. Therefore, the eco-cost presents the effect on the selection of the best production scheme.Introduction Optimizing production scheme is to determine the mining quantities of ore and rock, the pushing position of stope each year, and maximize the NPV of mine. In the theory, production scheming optimization has gone through trial and error (Pana and Carlson 1966), linear programming method (Johnson 1968), mixed integer programming (Gershon 1983), integer mapping (Kim and Cai 1990), dynamic programming et al (Gu et al 2014). In recent years, the study on production scheduling optimization has been focused on two aspects. On the one hand, the study is to solve the investment risk caused by the uncertainties of economic and geological environment (Ramazan and Dimitrakopoulos 2013, Marcotte and Caron 2010, Lamghari and Dimitrakopoulos 2012, Godoy and Dimitrakopoulos 2004, Benndorf and Shishvan 2014). On the other hand, the emphasis of the study was on reducing the problems for the optimization algorithm, to make it more efficient and practical (Cullenbine et al 2011, Shishvan and Sattarvand 2015, Askari-Nasab et al 2011, Nasab et al 2010). However, different production schemes cause different damage of mine land and pollutant emission, thus triggering environment problem. With the improvement of people’s consciousness of environment protection, the environmental issue of mining has been attracting more and more attention."

Introduction The urgency of further development of our domestic energy resources becomes more apparent every day. The production capability of existing facilities, taken in the aggregate, declines perhaps 10% per year; imported energy is expensive if available at all; conservation helps reduce demand but eventually will reach a point of diminishing return; new energy sources are promising but past experience, as with nuclear power, teaches us lead times are long and success is not assured. To approach the energy future rationally, it is essential to have some idea of the size of the nation's remaining energy resources, their characteristics, and the degree of uncertainty involved in their estimates. Resources are, of course, only one end of a long chain leading to energy supply to the ultimate consumer. They are an essential element, however, and the only one not under society's control. Given that the resources and a national will to produce the energy exist, it is possible to convert the resources to supply in, generally, an environmentally reasonable manner. However, the process of developing supply takes time. Government must permit access to the resource, and remunerative prices and further evolution of technlogy are required. This paper does not deal with these essentials, but they must not be forgotten. This discussion is limited to coal, oil, natural gas and gas liquids, uranium, and oil shale. Other energy sources are discussed elsewhere in this issue. Crude Oil Conventional crude oil resources are of greatest concern today, given our dependence on imported oil and its rapidly rising price. Estimates of oil originally in place (OOIP) range from 619 billion bbl to 1,094 billion bbl, differing by almost a factor of two (Table 1). This is surprising because the U.S. is a mature petroleum province with over 120 billion bbl produced and over 400 billion bbl OOIP discovered. Differences in the estimates involve differences in the experience of the various estimators, the interpretation of present geologic information and historical statistics, the methodology, and probably the extent (i.e., water depths) for which offshore resources are included. The range shown for the estimate of a given estimator appears to be primarily due to geologic uncertainty. This uncertainty can be measured by taking the ratio of the low and of the high estimate to the expected estimate for that information source. The low estimates range from 0.85 to 0.87 of their respective values. The high estimates range from 1.18 to 1.27 of the expected values. In all cases the high estimate is further from the expected value than the low,
