The mechanical properties of 300-series stainless steels were investigated in both high-pressure hydrogen and helium environments at ambient temperatures. An auslenitic steel which is unstable with respect to formation of strain-induced a (bee) and € (hcp) mar-tensile is embrittled when plastically strained in a hydrogen environment. A stable austenitic steel is not embriltled when tested under the same conditions. The presence of hydrogen causes embrittlement at the mar-lensitic structure and a definite change in the general fracture mode from a ductile to a quasicleavage type. The embrittled martensitic facets are surrounded by a more ductile type fracture which suggests that the presence of hydrogen initiates microcracks at the martensitic structure. If a steel is unstable with respecl to fortnation of strain induced martensile, plastic deformation in a hydrogen environment will produce rapid embrittlement of a notched specimen in comparison to an unnotched one. FERRITIC and martensitic steels can be embrittled by hydrogen that has been introduced into the alloys, either by thermal or cathodic charging prior to testing.1-5 However, conflicting reports exist as to whether austenitic steels that are stable or unstable with respect to formation of strain-induced martensite can be embrittled by hydrogen.8-12 A recent investigation has shown that cathodically-charged thin foils of a stable austenitic steel can be embrittled.13 An earlier investigation of a thermally charged 18-10 stainless steel revealed a significant decrease in the ductility only at the lowest test temperature of -78°C, although strain-induced bee martensite was shown to be present in one specimen tested at ambient temperatures.' When martensitic steels are tested in a hydrogen atmosphere, they are embrittled.'4-'7 It has been observed in this Laboratory that 304L steel, which is unstable with respect to formation of strain induced martensite, forms surface cracks when plastically strained in a high-pressure hydrogen environment. Work in progress elsewhere concurrent with this investigation has also established that 304L is embrittled when tested in a high-pressure hydrogen atmosphere." The objective of this investigation was to study the effect of a high-pressure hydrogen environment on the tensile properties of a stainless steel that contained strain-induced martensite (304L) and one that did not (310). EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES Notched and unnotched cylindrical specimens were machined from 304L* and 310 rods that were heat- treated at 1000°C in argon for 1 hr followed by a water quench. The chemical analyses of these steels are given in Table I. The unnotched specimens had a reduced section diameter of 0.184 & 0.001 in., a gage length of 0.7 in., and were threaded with a 0.5-in.-diam. thread on each end. The notched specimens had a reduced section diameter of 0.260 * 0.001 in. and a 0.75-in. gage length, with a 30 pct 60 deg v-notch at the center. The notch had a maximum root radius of 0.002 in. The tensile bars were fractured in a hydrogen or helium atmosphere of 104 psi at ambient temperatures. The system used for mechanically testing the specimens is to be described in detail elsewhere.19 Several specimens of each type were tested in air using an Instron testing machine. The same yield strength and ultimate tensile strength were obtained in 104 psi helium with the above system as with the conventional testing machine. Magnetic analysis was employed to determine that there was a (bee) martensite in plastically deformed 304L and that it was not present in plastically deformed 310. The magnetic technique depended on allowing the material being studied to serve as the core between a primary and secondary coil. Thus, any change in the amount of magnetic material present between the annealed and plastically deformed steels will be indicated by corresponding changes in the induced voltage in the secondary circuit." The ratio of the output signal of a nonmagnetic stainless steel to a completely magnetic maraging steel was 2000 to I. Several unnotched 304L bars tested in hydrogen were analyzed for hydrogen by vacuum fusion analysis. There was an increase in the hydrogen content to approximately 2 ppm for the specimens tested in hydrogen, as compared to less than 1 ppm for the as-received material. Several thin sections cut from notched areas of 304L specimens tested in hydrogen and containing the fracture surface contained approximately 1.5 ppm H. The accuracy of these determinations was estimated to be ± 50 pct.

Results are presented of a study on the combined influences of ingot dendrite am spacing and thermo-mechanical treatments on the fracture behavior and mechanical properties of high purity 7075 aluminum alloy. The most important single variable influencing mechanical properties was found to be undissolved alloy second Phase (microsegregation inherited from the original ingot). Ultimate and yield strengths were found to increase linearly with decreasing amount of alloy second phase while ductility increased markedly. At low amounts of second phase, transverse properties were approximately equal to longitudinal properties. In tensile testing, microcracks and holes were invariably found to originate in or around second phase particles. Fracture occurred both by propagation of cracks and coalescence of holes, depending on the distribution and amount of second phase. IN most commercial wrought alloys, second phase particles are present that are inherited from the original cast ingot. These include, for example, non-equilibrium alloy second phases such as CuAl2 and impurity second phases such as FeA13 and Cr2A1, in aluminum alloys. A previous paper1 has dealt with the morphology of these second phases in cast and wrought aluminum 7075 alloy, and with their behavior during various thermomechanical treatments. In this paper we discuss the influence of the particles on mechanical properties and fracture behavior of the alloy. Previous experimental work indicating a direct and major effect of second phase particles on mechanical properties (especially on ductility) includes the work of Edelson and Baldwin on pure copper.' Also relevant are the many studies demonstrating the important effect of nonmetallic inclusions on the fracture of. steel.3'4 Work on aluminum includes that of Antes, Lipson, and Rosenthal5 who showed that a dramatic improvement in ductility of wrought aluminum alloys of the 7000 series is achieved by eliminating second phases. It now seems well established that included second phases play a dominant role in controlling ductility (as measured, for example, by reduction in area in a tensile test) of a variety of materials. There is, therefore, considerable current interest in the mechanisms by which second phase particles affect ductile fracture. Experiments done by various workers have shown that second phase particles or discontinuities in the microstructure are potential sites for nuclea-tion of microcracks and of holes,6-l3 which then grow and cause premature fracture and the loss of ductility. Theoretical attempts have been made to explain the observed phenomena; most are able to explain observations qualitatively, but lack quantitative agreement. Much experimental work needs to be done to aid extension of theoretical models. A recent review article by Rosenfield summarizes work in this general area.14 PROCEDURE Material used in the previously described study on solution kinetics of cast and wrought 7075 alloy1 was also used in this study. Procedures for ingot casting, solution treating, and working were described in detail in that paper. Test bars were obtained for material of 76 initial dendrite arm spacing (11/2 in. from the ingot base) and 95 µ initial dendrite arm spacing (51/2 in. from the ingot base) for the following thermomechanical treatments (solution temperature 860°F; reduction by cold rolling). a) Solution treated 12 hr, reduced 2/1, 4/1, and 16/1. b) Solution treated 12 hr, reduced 16/1, solution treated approximately 5 hr after reduction. c) Same as a) except solution treated 24 hr prior to reduction. d) Same as b) except solution treated 24 hr prior to reduction. e) Same as d) except solution treated 20 hr after reduction. Test bars were taken both longitudinally and transverse to the rolling direction. Transverse properties are in the long transverse direction; since the final product was sheet (0.030 in. thick), properties in the short transverse direction could not be obtained. Test bars were flat specimens, of gage cross section1/-| in. by 0.030 in. and 1/2 in. gage length. After machining the test bars, they were given an additional 1/2 hr solution treatment of 860°F and aged 24 hr at 250°F. Three bars were tested for each location and thermomechanical treatment, after rejection of mechanically flawed bars. The average results of these three bars are reported. Elongation was measured using a $ in. extensometer and reduction in area was determined using a profilometer to measure the area after fracture. INFLUENCE OF THERMOMECHANICAL TREATMENTS AND SECOND PHASE ON MECHANICAL PROPERTIES Results of mechanical testing are presented in Figs. 1 to 4 and in tabular form in the Appendix. A general conclusion from results obtained is that details of the thermomechanical treatments studied were important only insofar as they influenced the amount of residual second phase. "While thiocyanate (SCN-) is used in a number of industrial processes (production of polyacrylonitrile filaments, synthesis of agricultural chemicals and certain metallurgical solvent extraction and flotation circuits) it is recognized more as an undesirable by-product associated with ' the metallurgical industry. Thiocyanate is present at low concentrations in some waste streams from the iron and steel industry. Of particular significance is the formation of thiocyanate during cyanidation of gold and silver ores, concentrates, tailing s and residues. The thiocyanate levels present in the resulting effluents may range from a few mg/I to several thousand mg/I.At present, thiocyanate does not appear to be as hazardous in the environment as cyanide (CN-) at the same concentration although its interaction with other species and resulting decomposition of products may be unacceptable. Of course the presence of thiocyanate in the leaching circuit and ultimately in the effluent streams may add considerably to the oxidative requirments of any non-selective treatment process for cyanidation wastes.With respect to the thiocyanate as it relates to the cyanidation process, two aspects are evident. Thiocyanate forms and persists in the cyanidation circuit resulting in a ""fouling"" condition with subsequent loss of leaching activity. In order to reduce or control this problem, it is common practice for some mills to discharge daily as much as 20% of the barren leach liquor. Besides contributing to fouling of the leach liquor the formation of thiocyanate represents an irreversible loss of reagent cyanide. It is noteworthy that in some present or proposed mill practice reagent cyanide loss through thiocyanate formation may reach 50%(1). The purpose of this paper is to discus s the application of controlled electrooxidation of thiocyanate with the view of suggesting a process for regenerating cyanide from waste thiocyanate(2). The paper describes the important theoretical aspects and presents experimental data obtained for thiocyanate electrooxidation using both small and large scale electrochemical reactors. Some economic conclusions are presented."

The Central Victorian Goldfield is a world-class field located in Victoria, Australia. It is currently undergoing a revival through activities in the Bendigo, Ballarat, Tarnagulla, Maldon, Castlemaine and other fields. Sediment-hosted auriferous gold-quartz reefs that are structurally and geometrically complex dominate the region. To date, no remote methods have been developed to assist in the targeting of the discrete high-grade oreshoots that characterise the mineralisation. An understanding of the structural setting and controls, and thus likely frequency of repetition of oreshoots remains the main exploration tool. Gold within the reefs is generally characterised by both its coarse nature (>100 up to 10 000 microns) and erratic distribution; as a result, most of the Victorian deposits are classed as high- to extreme-nugget effect systems. This characteristic ensures that mineralisation is very challenging to explore, evaluate and exploit. The key issues facing the explorer and miner are related to effective sampling, and definition of geological and grade continuity, and ultimately grade and tonnage. Tonnage can often be estimated to a reasonable level of confidence, whereas the grade estimate generally carries a medium- to high-level of uncertainty. In these deposits, surface diamond drilling alone is generally only able to define an Inferred Mineral Resource, with underground development, closely spaced in-fill drilling and bulk sampling/trial mining required to define Ore Reserves. The extraction of gold from ores is relatively simple, based on the coarse nature and hence amenability to gravity recovery. Ground conditions and the need for in-stope grade control (eg mapping, sampling etc), generally point toward mechanised cut-and-fill as the primary stoping method in the region. To potential investors this style of mineralisation has been viewed as high risk, because of the associated low confidence in the grade estimate, general paucity of Ore Reserves at mining start-up and need for underground development at the Feasibility Stage.

Mineral raw materials, because they are essential to our industrial prosperity and military strength, must be made available in substantial quantities regardless of cost. Variations in the cost of procuring minerals, as compared with the cost of obtaining other commodities, and changes in the cost of production of different minerals relative to one another, will naturally influence the quantities of a given mineral item that can be marketed readily. However, in the last analysis, the cost of winning minerals from the ground usually constitutes only a small fraction of the value of the end-use products and services derived from them. The miner's share of the cost of a typewriter, telephone circuit, or even a modem office building, is almost insignificant. Far more important to the ultimate consumer, therefore, than any minor saving in cost is the assurance of ample supplies of the minerals needed to aliment our expanding economy. To create a successful metal mining operation involves (1 ) the discovery and systematic development of a mineral deposit, (2) extraction of the ore, (3) the mechanical and metallurgical processing to eliminate worthless or harmful impurities, and (4) the profitable disposal of the product. The fist step of the technological process belongs chiefly in the realm of the geologist, the second is a mining engineer's job, the third is mainly up to the millmen and extractive metallurgists; whereas the fourth and equally important step poses a commercial problem that has aspects in common with the marketing of other products. Ore finding is far from being an exact science. There is no mathematical criterion for evaluating the efficiency of prospecting and exploration. Lady Luck shares the honors or assumes part of the blame along with the prospector and geologist. Marketing like- wise involves factors that seemingly defy engineering analysis. Although the other steps can be measured with some degree of mathematical accuracy, even they tend to vary so widely in basic principle, as well as in

In many ways a government could be regarded as a macro business enterprise. Its shareholders are its peoples, the productivity of the nation depends on them, and, indeed, the profits or losses of a nation's balance sheet can be linked to the surplus or deficit in its balance of payments. International loans need to be repaid, and in most developing nations the noose is tied so tightly that one wonders if such debts will ever be repaid. In their endeavour to meet such obligations, their currencies may be devalued [sometimes in frightening proportions], in the hope of boosting the export potential. However, this is a vicious circle, since exports will not be achievable unless sufficient technical expertise and infrastructure exist to address the opportunities which may have been created through devaluation. Many of the poorer countries have exportable resources of minerals, which are supplied on the international market. This may be the good news, but, unhappily, steps were seldom taken to enhance the value of the mineral products through further beneficiation and the production of high-value sophisticated products. That is where the vicious circle comes in: inadequate infrastructure is created, competent and well-trained manpower is not generated, and the result has inevitably been that the GDP slips backwards, and the nation becomes progressively impoverished. To exacerbate the problem, it is unfortunate that the more impoverished a nation becomes, the greater is its birthrate, and hence the greater the need to create wealth at the very time that the nation is becoming poorer and poorer. Within this scenario, one may well reflect that this is exactly what nations on the African Continent are experiencing, namely exploding populations, although most of the poorest nations in the world are found on this continent. Yet they often possess a superior mineral production potential. Africa still suffers from what may be called the colonial influence, in that the developed world has regarded this continent as a source of raw materials to feed its own factories. The colonial powers gave only secondary attention to developing the nation's peoples and its infrastructure, such as railways, roads, harbours, and other services. These problems all naturally fall within the ambit of government interest, and it is therefore obvious that the state should play a dominant role in addressing them. The reasons for governmental involvement in mineral-related research and development differ considerably, depending on the state of industrial development of that country. Thus, in the highly industrialised world, government's interest will lie mostly in the fields of strategic minerals, which may not be economically exploitable. An example would be the exploitation of American low-grade chromites during the Second World War, or minerals which need to be imported from unfriendly or unreliable sources, such that disruption would not be in the national interest. Colonial powers like the United Kingdom and France established R&D facilities to assist, inter alia, in the exploitation of mineral resources in their colonies. The approach of developing countries would differ from that of the industrialised nations, in that their primary quest would be to promote, support and encourage the development of infrastructure, and the establishment of major industries in order to create and provide employment opportunities, as well as to support small operators who cannot afford to undertake their own research and development. On the debit side, it is a sad fact that, however good their intentions may be, underdeveloped countries are invariably unable to provide the requisite financial support to sustain their own research-and-development laboratories. In a high-tech world, the cost of sophisticated equipment is steep and cannot be afforded. Again, the proverbial vicious circle comes into play. The competent researchers find themselves without rewarding employment and would therefore shun such institutions. Recent trends in the developed world have been to privatise research-and-development institutions, the argument being that they should draw closer to the industry they serve, and that the provision of taxpayers' money for strategic purposes is no longer as important as it may have been once. Complete state withdrawal has had its negative effect in that long-range, high-calibre research has tended to be replaced by short-term problem-solving projects. Industries engaged in the minerals business differ somewhat from major ones, like motor, computer or pharmaceutical industries, which are large enough to support their own internal research and development, and whose work is highly confidential, so that any leakage could have disastrous consequences. Furthermore, private companies are answerable to their shareholders and costly long-range, 'blue-sky' research would be difficult to justify. Since mineral research has become of lesser importance in the sophisticated First World, this trend has persisted. On the positive side, R&D institutions which are totally financed by government, suffer because they tend to forget the reason for their existence. They have often become a form of auxiliary to an academic institution where higher degrees are collected by scientific boffins who, in their quest for academic excellence, tend to disregard the benefits that industry may ultimately gain from this research endeavour. The trend in recent years - and South Africa is no exception - has been for the state to progressively reduce its subsidy, whilst at the same time encouraging research organisations [for their ongoing survival] to interact closely with industry, and to conduct work directly for them on a contract basis. Organisations such as CSIRO in Australia, CANMET in Canada, the USBM in the United States and Mintek in South Africa all generate income from the private sector. K. F. TROMP*—In dealing with the question of the most suitable kind of solid media for heavy density suspension processes Walker and Allen point out that the particle size of the solid media should not be taken too fine, as the viscosity increases with the area of the solid media and a low viscosity is essential lor high tonnage and accurate separation. A coarser particle size of the solid media will, in their opinion, of necessity give rise to a differential density in the bath (higher gravity at the bottom of the bath than at the top) but they advocate acceptance of the differential density rather than a higher viscosity. Though I fully agree with the choice the authors have made, I cannot subscribe to their view that only by accepting a differential density in the bath a coarse particle size of the solid media can be used. There certainly is another alternative: stronger agitation. Applying sufficiently strong vertical currents, a uniform gravity can be obtained quite well in a suspension of a coarse solid media. Of course, this is not a very attractive solution, for it means a degradation of the true gravity separation and a step backwards to hydraulic classification, which makes the washing dependent on size and shape of the particles. However, to a greater or lesser extent, this is what actually takes place in all the heavy density suspension processes relying on a uniform gravity in the bath. The so-called "stable" suspension processes make no exception. They all "stabilize" their suspensions by introducing or creating vertical currents, be it upwards or downwards or both, be it by hydraulic or by mechanical means. In fact, there is no such thing as a "stable" suspension in gravity separation, as the very reason for the use of suspensions in this field is the property that the solid media is able to settle and so facilitate the recovery. I have been enlarging on this point because the characteristics of the various processes can only be well understood and viewed from the same angle (from Bar-voys up to Chance) when the fact is recognized that mechanical or hydraulic agitation is a condition sine qua non for obtaining a uniform density from top to bottom in a suspension. Is a Cone-slraped Vessel Essenlial? Of the two alternatives for getting a low viscosity Walker and Allen have preferred correctly the sacrifice of uniform gravity in the bath instead of increasing further their vertical current arid agitation. The resulting differential density of the bath brings the problem of bow to prevent accumulation of intermediate gravity products in the bath, an accumulation which, if not prevented, would ultimately plug their cone. According to the authors an open-top cone combined with a downdraft current of the bath liquid would he the only suitable way to cope with such suspensions and they assume as a fact that "in any vessel other than a cone, such a differential density could not be tolerated." My experience is quilt: different. In my process, which has been in successful operation for more than a decade, differ-ential density of the suspension is applied ranging from values below 0.1 up to differentials above 0.5, according to the prevailing requirements of the individual plant. In this process, which is charac-terized by the use of horizontal currents in a suspension of differential density, the form of the vessel is of secondary importance and different types are in operation. It so happens that none of these are in the, form of a cone. The fact that 24 washboxes on my process have been installed and 12 others are under construction may constitute sufficient proof against the opinion that only a cone-shaped separator would be suited for differential density separation. Horizontal Currents in Differentia1 Den-sity Sepparation I myself have some doubts as to the suitability of a cone with downdraft for dealing with differential density (or, for that matter, any other washbox relying on vertical currents for removing the intermediate gravity products). It ap-pears to me that it is restricted to feed of small size only and even then with watch-fulness. If we take, for example, a piece of 2 in., the draft necessary to pull such a piece down to a zone wherein the den-sity of the suspension is, say, 0.03 higher, is quite considerable. For a suspension of, say, 1.6 sp gr the downdraft will have to be in the region of 3 in. per second. Unfortunately. most of the differential in density is in the part immediately below the reach of the top current which transports the floats. Consequently, we need the downdraft where we like it least: in the upper part of the cone. This entails the risk that light float particles are carried away with the downward current. This current of, say again, 3 in. per second would carry particles up to 1.3 sp gr and 3/8 in. size into the 1.6 gravity zone. This is prohibitive. It is also prohibitive because a downdraft of 3 in. per second in the upper part of the cone would require a tremendous circulation of medium. IIalf way up a 20 ft diam cone, a downdraft of 3 in. per second would correspond with 8500 gpm. With the downward current following the way of least resistance, the strength of the downdraft will not be exactly the same at different places of a cross area. If, as I anticipate, the center of the cone is favored, the strength of the downdraft will fall below the critical value near the

INTRODUCTION Union Carbide is currently operating an in-situ leach project on the Palangana Dome area in Duval county. This deposit meets all the requirements for in-situ leach in that the ore (1) is below the water table, (2) is in a permeable horizon, (3) is amenable to chemical leaching, and (4) is confined by impervious layers. This project has been under commercial production since 1976, and its capacity has been expanded on three occasions since going on-stream. Recently, additional uranium reserves were discovered on the Rogers-Cardenas (R-C) property about 32 km north of the Palangana operation. The ore is located within the Oakville sands and its characteristics are quite similar to those of the ore at Palangana. Both are an unconsolidated Arkosic sand high in clay and calcium carbonate. The R-C ore, however, is somewhat coarser with a mean particle size of 0.15 mm as compared to a mean particle size of 0.07 mm for the Palangana ore. In all respects it would appear that this ore would be a candidate for in-situ leach as a satellite operation to Palangana. Unfortunately, R-C ore is above the water table and, therefore, not amenable to the Palangana practice. Because of the limited known reserves in this deposit, it is readily apparent that conventional mining and milling are out of the question. However, because of its proximity to our Palangana operation, it seemed worthwhile to consider other options. The most viable route based on our past experience was to heap leach the ore. Our recent success at our Gas Hills facility and our Maybell operation, in employing a heap leach practice to our marginal reserves seemed to be a logical approach for processing this ore. Our experiences at both locations are described in "Heap Leaching - A Case History" by R. G. Woolery et al., Mining Engineering, March 1978. In both instances the process is an acid leach circuit and acid consumption averages 20 kg/t H2SO4. A preliminary feasibility study showed that because of the high strip ratio required for the R-C project to be successful, additional ore reserves must be located and that a method of heap leaching with an alkaline circuit would have to be developed. As a result of this paper study, the decision was made to proceed with a program of additional exploration drilling to determine the total ore reserves that could be mined economically. The Mining Department will evaluate each ore zone for cutoff grade, strip ratio, and expected mining cost. At the same time, a laboratory program to evaluate the available core samples for amenability to heap leaching with respect to an estimate of uranium recovery and processing costs was developed. This program is currently in progress, and at this time, we are just completing our process amenability study. BENCH-SCALE EVALUATION OF THE R-C ORE The initial bench-scale slurry leach tests on the R-C ore showed an acid consumption in excess of 200 kg/t H2SO4. These data, of course, discouraged us from considering this process route. Not only would the acid cost be prohibitive, but the gypsum generated by the reaction of the sulfuric acid with the calcium carbonate of the ore would severely effect the percolation of the lixivant. For this reason, the laboratory program was directed toward an alkaline circuit compatible with heap leaching. Because of the proximity of the R-C property to our Palangana operation, it seemed advisable to integrate the processing of this ore into the production at Palangana. Doing so would enable us to bring the R-C property into production by merely enlarging our present facilities at Palangana; otherwise, construction of a grass roots plant would be necessary. Ideally, the simplest method would be to construct the heaps at Palangana and employ an ammonium carbonate/bicarbonate leachant compatible with the in-situ production liquor. The product liquors could then be co-mingled or processed separately as desired. To determine if this goal was practical, samples of the R-C ore were obtained, and a laboratory program initiated. Heap leach amenability testing consisted of preliminary bench-scale evaluation to determine optimum solution strength and ultimate uranium recovery, followed by small column tests to confirm the bench-scale metallurgy and to determine percolation characteristics. These bench-scale tests are being followed by pilot-scale testing approximating field conditions. As expected, the bench-scale tests showed that the dissolution rate is considerably slower for alkaline leach than has been our experience in acid leaching. Because of the slower reaction rates, product liquor grades will be lower than for acid, as greater volumes of solution are required for satisfactory uranium extractions. The greatest influence on reaction times found in the laboratory was the carbonate/bicarbonate strength and oxidant addition. However, the higher salt concentration reduced the efficiency of the IX resin circuit and about 25g/L salt proved to an upper limit compatible with subsequent IX treatment. The oxidant contributed significantly to the early extraction rate but seemed to have only minimal effect on the total practical U308 extracted or the time required to achieve it. This variable will require larger scale testing to determine if the added cost of the oxidant is actually justifiable. Thus, the small-scale laboratory slurry tests, based on the 0.088% U308 sample available, indicate that leaching at 25g/L ammonium carbonate/bicarbonate, with or without oxidant, we might expect an 80-85% U308 extraction on this ore.

The Lakeview Pool of Kern County, California, was discovered in 1910 with the drilling of Lakeview No. 1 which blew out and produced an estimated 8,250,000 bbl of oil in 544 days of uncontrolled flow. The well has since been known as the Lakeview Gusher. Full exploitation of the pool did not take place until about 25 years later. A total of 112 producing wells were completed in the Lakeview sand through April 30, 1949. As of that date, about 30 per cent of the total wells drilled were still producing, with an average pool production rate of approximately 2000 bbl per day. The cumulative oil production was about 41 million bbl of oil, or 55.3 per cent of the tank oil originally in place. The pool is bordered on its down-structure side by a body of inactive edgewater and water production where present has been principally the result of coning. Since the depletion of the greater portion of the gas energy by the Lake-view Gusher, the pool has operated under gravity drive. Relatively high angle dips, good permeabilities and favorable fluid characteristics have made gravity drainage particularly effective. Since January, 1942, the oil recovery -has been relatively constant at about 53,000 bbl per ft drop in fluid level. Correlations between the volume of reservoir space drained and the cumulative oil produced indicate that an ultimate recovery of 63.3 per cent of the tank oil originally in place is attainable. INTRODUCTION The Lakeview Pool is an outstanding example of gravity drainage. It is one of many productive reservoirs of the Midway-Sunset Field, and is located in Kern County, approximately five miles southeast of Taft and two miles north of Maricopa, California. Its position rel- ative to surrounding pools and to the Thirty-Five anticline is shown on Fig. 1. The northern portion of the pool lies in sections 32 and 33, Township 32 South, Range 24 East, Mt. Diablo Base and Meridian, while the southern portion lies in sections 25, 26, 35 and 36, Township 12 North, Range 24 West, San Bernardino Base and Meridian. As no two sections bear the same number, they will hereafter be referred to by section number alone. The purpose of this paper is to review the performance of the Lakeview Pool in an effort to evaluate the effectiveness of gravity drive as a recovery mechanism. REGIONAL STRATIGRAPHY AND STRUCTURE The oustanding structural feature is this area is the Thirty-Five anticline, the axis of which plunges South 75" East through the center of Section 35. As shown on Fig. 2, the following zones are oil and gas bearing in the Thirty-Five anticline area: Pleistocene Basal Tulare Tar Sands Pliocene San Joaquin Mya Sands Top Oil or Scalez Zone Etchegoin Kinsey Sand Wilhelm Zone Gusher Sand Calitroleum Sand Miocene Reef Ridge Lakeview Sand Sub-Lakeview Miocene Sands Monarch Sands or fractured shale equivalent Maricopa Webster Sand or fractured shale equivalent Fractured Shale-Uvigerina Zone C Obispo Sand and fractured shale equivalent Pacific Shale Zone The productive interval of the Lakeview Pool is limited to Upper Miocene and Lower Pliocene deposition. In this general area, the most prevalent type of accumulation results from stratigraphic traps or permeability pinchouts. As is the case of the Lakeview Pool, strati-graphic traps resulting from angular unconformities are present. The structure within the Miocene does not parallel that of the Etchegoin (Pliocene), as the Miocene beds were folded, and in places faulted, and subjected to erosion prior to Pliocene deposition. The Lakeview horizon consists of truncated sands which occur on the northeast flank of the Thirty-Five anticline. The direction of strike is west and northwesterly through sections 25 and 36 and continues northwesterly through sections 26 and 33, to the approximate center of section 32. At this point the strike swings to the northeast and the horizon re-enters section 33. in the northwest corner. The change in strike in section 32 affords synclinal accumulation at that point. The Lake-view sand is truncated updip by the Etchegoin overlap. To the southeast, the sand shales out, while to the northwest, the productive interval appears to be limited by a combination of stratigraphic pinchout and permeability barrier. Structurally, the Lakeview reservoir presents three areas of interest, as shown on Fig. 3. Area I in section 32 is a region in which a productive Sub-Lakeview Miocene sand is present. It occurs from 10 feet to 30 feet below the base of the Lakeview sand and attains a maximum thickness of 25 feet in Well No. 21, section 32. The producing characteristics of the Sub-Lakeview Miocene sand differ radically from those of the Lakeview sand. Water production at high structural locations and abnormally high fluid levels indicate that there was no communication with the Lakeview sand. Wells in Area I penetrated this sand and produced it in conjunction with the Lakeview sand. In Area 11, the Lakeview sand is a

MUCH descriptive matter has appeared on the subject of suspension roof supports, or roof bolting, as it is more commonly called. The widespread introduction of roof bolting into coal mines and metal mines is truly phenomenal. Mine operators were quick to recognize the advantages of supporting wide openings without hindrance to machine maneuverability and ventilation. Although suspension roof support has long been installed at St. Joseph Lead Co. mines in southeast Missouri,'" its application to coal mining presented new problems, such as proper anchorage and bearing for the bolts, bolt diameter, and spacing of bolts. After continuous testing and experimenting at the mines, standard roof-bolting materials were determined.'!' The study reported in this paper is not concerned with such details as bolt diameter, which may be considered already solved in practice. In the tests discussed here, small models patterned on actual bolts were found to function in the same way and as satisfactorily as their prototypes. The aim of these tests was rather to investigate the influence of roof-bolting systems on the stress distribution around mine openings and to study the fracture patterns obtained in actual testing. Little was found about this in the literature, as testing of suspension roof methods and quantitative measurements are only now coming to the fore. Several suggestions and actual measurements have been made to evaluate critically the functioning of roof bolting systems, single roof bolts, and parts thereof. Outstanding among them is Bucky's outline of structural model tests.'" Since none of the suggested testing equipment was available, however, for the experiments discussed below, a different approach was chosen. The response of a mine roof under stress has often been compared to that of a beam. The slow coming down and bending through of beam or plate-like banks of shale, sandstone, or top coal is a familiar occurrence, extensively cited in the literature." It was felt that testing of roof-bolt systems installed in a concrete beam which was loaded in bending would be a fair approximation of the behavior of a mine roof underground. Another school of thought considers the roof behavior over an underground opening in connection with the stress distribution all around a circular or rectangular opening. This is more accurate, and leads to the concept of a dome-shaped zone of material destroyed under tensile stress. This is likewise a common sight in unsupported roadways where the continuous fall of roof results in what has been called the natural outline of roof fracture. This theory could not be tested and is treated separately in Appendix B. It is important to note that according to both assumptions the immediate roof fails in tension; the use of a beam in these tests, therefore, should give information valid for either of the two theories. With the testing equipment at hand it was possible to load concrete beams 6xlx0.5 ft under two-point loading, giving an equal bending moment over the center part in which the model bolts were installed. A comparison was made of the ultimate loads needed to break plain beams and beams in which roof bolts were installed. Arrangements were made with: 1—plain beams; 2—bolts with plate washers, some with holes drilled at 90" angles and others with holes drilled at 45" angles; 3—bolts with channel irons underneath; 4—bolts in holes filled afterward with cement; and 5—bolts anchored in a stronger stratum. The foregoing arrangement is made in order of increasing strength, as assumed from the theory of reinforced concrete. Likewise, laminated beams with wooden model bolts and with combinations of the foregoing set-ups were tested. All in all, 21 experiments were made out of the much greater number of combinations possible. There were, too, some trial tests. Enough observations from this limited number were made to interpret the behavior of mine roof, supported by various types of suspension bolts, at fracture. In present-day concepts, which have been proved by mathematical derivations and stress analyses, any opening driven underground will change the distribution and magnitude of the stresses existing around it. It does not matter whether the stresses become visible, as in rocks whose strength is less than the forces acting upon them, or whether they are invisible, as in the gangways lacking evidence of rock pressure. In this latter case the rocks can withstand changes in stress-distribution. To consider the mine roof as a beam, there are, with transversal loading, tensile stresses in the lower fiber and compressive stresses in the upper layers above the neutral axis of the beam. Beams of brittle material such as rock and concrete fail exactly as shown in Fig. 1. Nearly all model beams showed the same fracture pattern as that of a tension crack. This study was prepared in response to the need for a series of data that reflect the basic flow pattern of energy resources in the United States. To effectively measure and analyze energy,2 it is necessary to prepare balances that reflect both production and consumption, and the various forms energy resources take at different stages of utilization. Before energy can be measured it must also be put into a common unit. In this study the common unit used is the British Thermal Unit (Btu). The ideal point to survey energy is at the stage of final ultimate use, representing the useful work derived from the interaction of energy inputs and the prime mover. Unfortunately this concept of efficient or useful work from energy output cannot readily be measured in the aggregate. With the present available official data, energy measurement can be carried to the point of calculation of net inputs of energy3 into the economy at various stages of utilization. However, preparation of energy balances, on a net basis is hampered by the fact that this can only be done for years when the censuses of Mineral Industries and Manufactures are taken, usually at 5-year interval.

Since April, 1962, Shell Oil Co. has operated a peripheral line-drive waterflood of the 10.750-ft lower Tuscaloosa (Cretaceous) Denkman sand in the Little Creek field. Located in southwestern Mississippi in the lower Tuscaloosa trend, the field was discovered by Shell in Jan., 1958. Among the largest in the trend, the accumulation is controlled stratigraphically and occurs in an extensive series of alluvial-point bar deposits across a nose that dips gently to the south. The crude oil is 39" API gravity and was highly undersaturated at initial conditions. Early production behavior indicated a depletion drive with slight water influx; primary recovery wm estimated to be 25 million bbl, or 24.5 percent of stock-tank oil originally in place. A.s a result of a favorable mobility ratio and remarkably uniform rock properties, the volumetric sweep eficiency in the waterflood has exceeded 90 percent. Despite the high connate water saturation (56 percent), the displacement efficiency by water injection has been quite efficient, contrary to traditional concepts. Based on observed field flood-out performance, ultimate recovery is calculated to be 46 million bbl. As anticipated, the production rate began declining during 1964 due to a continu ing reducrion in the number of producing wells as flood fronts advanced across the field. Cumulative recovery as of Jan., 1968, was 44.8 million bbl; waterflood operations ~hould be complete by 1970. Introduction Most waterfloods described in reservoir engineering literature involve pattern operations, the most common of which is the five-spot pattern. Only occasiona'lly are linear drives described, even though there probably are increasing numbers being put into operation. Increasing use of linear floods may reflect the accelerating trend towards early application of fluid-injection programs when linear drives are more efficient, as was the case at Little Creek. However. the Little Creek operation is unusual in several respects. It is one of a few successful waterfloods conducted in sands with connate water saturations approaching 60 percent, and it is among the deepest successful water-floods being operated anywhere. Development The Little Creek field was discovered in Jan., 1958, in the lower Tuscaloosa trend in southwestern Mississippi (Fig. 1). The discovery well, Shell-Lemann No. 1, was drilled on a seismic closure about 2 miles southeast of lower Tuscaloosa production at Sweetwater. The well was completed in the Denkman sand at 10,752 ft, and on initial potential it flowed 588 BOPD of 39" API crude on a %+-in. choke; psi was 730 and GOR was 442:l. Development proceeded rapidly on 40-acre spacing, and by the end of 1958 the field was producing approximately 9,100 B/D from 56 wells. Almost all this production came from the northern half of the field. The southern part was discovered in Nov., 1958, at a location almost 2 miles from previously established production. Subsequent drilling established an apparent conneotion about half a mile wide between the twd areas. Development of the field was practically complete by 1961 with the drilling of 155 producers and 35 dry holes. Some early wells were completed open hole but moslt are completed with casing cemented through the productive interval and perforated for production. Geology The lower Tuscaloosa structure in this area is a north-south nose with maximum dips of about 2" on the flanks. There is no discernible faulting at the producing horizon. Productive limits of the field are shown in Fig. 2, which is contoured on a marker just above the main productive zone. A common water level at 10,415 ft subsea was logged at both the northwest and southeast ends of the field. There is a gross oil column of nearly 100 ft (Fig. 2). Since there is less than 40 ft of closure, it is apparent that bhe accumubtion is controlled stratigraphically, being limited by a sand pinch-out across the creslt of the nose. The total produc-

BASIC U. S. Patent 1,487,145 on ammonia leaching of nickel ores was issued to the author on March 18, 1924. Equivalent patents in other countries were obtained later. The Dutch Syndicate Brikcarbo became interested in the process in 1935; and a couple of years later the late Dr. H. Foster Bain sent samples of Surigao laterite iron ore to Delft and witnessed tests made there on this material for the Philippines Commonwealth. As a result, the author was asked in April 1940 by Dr. Bain to go to the Philippines to erect and take charge of a pilot plant for the process. The World War prevented carrying out this proposal. The Dorr Co. also became interested in the process at about the same period. The investigations by the Freeport Sulphur Co. on the process as applied to the Cuban nickeliferous laterites, which resulted in the Nicaro enterprise, and the results of this operation have been well described elsewhere.1,²,³,4,5 This Nicaro plant was, in operation for almost two years, and during this period produced about 10 pct of the world nickel production from laterites containing 1.35 pct nickel. This plant and its operation were war measures and, in view of this, activities were suspended in April 1947. The results obtained fully demonstrated the technical feasibility of the process and its economical aspects on a commercial scale. In this respect, it should be understood that it is probable that improvements may be made by further development, and that there are possibilities for advantageous application of the process to garnierite and similar ores with higher values in nickel than the laterite iron ores at Nicaro. While the articles cited above have given a certain amount of information, no general article containing all the important process data has been pub- lished. Since the process is of more than local interest, a fuller knowledge of the fundamental and practical factors of the method may be welcome to those interested in this new field of metals technology. The author, accordingly, takes pleasure in submitting this article to the AIME as it represents in a condensed form the results of many years of research. The brief outlines of the fundamental and other factors and the explanation of observed phenomena are presented with as little discussion of details as possible, consistent with clarity. It is a special satisfaction to the author to make some contribution of his own in return for the benefits of the many valuable publications issued by the Institute during his thirty years of membership. Ores Adapted for Ammonia Leaching: All nickel and cobalt ores which originate from weathering of peridotites or similar basic rocks having sufficient values are suitable for treatment by the ammonia leaching process after a preliminary reduction under proper conditions. The formation of these deposits was probably as follows: In the course of time the basic rocks were attacked by atmospheric agencies; MgO and SiO2 were gradually leached out, and secondary nickel minerals formed, such as garnierite, a hydrated silicate of nickel and magnesia. These secondary products are, however, not stable. They decompose in a further stage of weathering and ultimately only a relatively small residue of insoluble oxides remains, known as laterite iron ore with a small nickel content and very little cobalt. Under these mantles of laterite, richer nickel values may be found, usually indicated by the occurrence of garnierite. The more the ore is disintegrated by nature, the higher the iron content and the better the nickel extractions that may be expected therefrom. Table I shows extractions that may be expected from different types of ores, assuming treatment of -200 mesh products and that all precautions have been taken for obtaining maximum extractions. As for the distribution of the various nickel minerals and compounds that may be present, great variations may occur from locality to locality as well as vertically in a deposit. From such "run of

Data bases are, however, historical, which is a problem to be overcome in a computerized truck management information system, especially in regards to a truck dispatch system as loading sites / loading conditions and some dump site conditions continually change. As these changes occur, data base s must change as well, and thus the need for the continual update of data bases that the computer uses for a Truck MIS.For a truck dispatch system to achieve reliability / viability, dispatch decisions need to revolve around real time data gathered in an automated way. Integration of all truck management function s through automated data gathering lead s to the best over-all system.An integrated system is a combination of many different factors and is only as good as each factor / building block put in the system. With the proper building blocks, an integrated Truck MIS is very feasible - an MIS System that includes weighing, time and motion study, truck maintenance and maintenance management, as well as truck dispatch.Truck MISAn integrated Truck MIS provides for truck dispatch as the ultimate end result, a truly automated /integrated truck dispatch system (to function non-operator-dependent). A lead-zinc orebody, in fairly strong quartzite and with a dip of 35" to 60°, is block-caved by use of scrams in a stair-step pattern up the ore footwall. Scram linings to handle coarse muck and permit the use of folding scrapers are developed by the use of end-grain wooden blocks to reduce maintenance and keep operating cost to a minimum. THE Bunker Hill mine, since its discovery in 1885, has steadily produced a high grade of lead-silver-zinc ore. By the end of 1952 over 21,000,000 tons of this high-grade ore had been produced by square-set mining, and reserves in the mine continue to be very satisfactory both as to quantity and grade. For many years prior to 1941, mine production and mill capacity had been 1200 tons of feed per day. Closely adjacent to the mill, and stored behind dikes, coarse jig tailings had been impounded during the time preceding the advent of fine grinding and selective flotation. When manpower became short in 1941 and sink-and-float preconcentration was proved successful, mill capacity was increased to 1800 tons per day to treat these jig tailings economically. By 1946, because the supply of jig tailings was limited, underground exploration was started to discover and prove ore reserves of low-grade material which could be mined by an appropriate bulk mining method. During the years of square-set mining many possible areas of low-grade mineralization had been observed. One chosen for the first exploration work was sufficiently remote from active mining areas so that subsidence, if an ore-body were proved, would cause no problem. Also, old adits and workings were still open and in good enough condition so that exploration in the mineralized zone could be started with a minimum of preparatory work. In 1948 an orebody was proved of sufficient tonnage, of a grade about 2 pct Zn, 0.5 oz Ag, and 1.0 pct Pb. It was decided to use block-caving, the only appropriate mining method by which this grade of ore could be economically recovered. Exploration for additional reserves in other areas of the mine is continuing, but ultimate results are not known at this time. With more sink-and-float capacity, larger ball mills, and more flotation machines, mill capacity was increased to 3000 tons per day, permitting the mining of ore in the square-set area at a maximum rate not usually achieved, because of the scarcity of labor. Increased mill capacity also permits block caving and the mining of jig tailings at variable rates to keep mill feed up to 3000 tons per day. Fortunately the three types of feed are amenable to the same mill circuit and reagents for recovery of Pb and Zn. For example, during the first 10 months of 1952 square sets produced 827 tons per day, block-caving 1421 tons per day, and jig tailings 643 tons per day, an average daily production of 2891 tons for all three products. Exploration had proved the existence of an ore-body 1000 ft long and 165 ft wide in horizontal section, see Fig. 1. Company engineers were concerned only with the vertical extension, about 300 ft, from an old level to the surface. Much of this almost outcropped, Fig. 2. The ore lies in the hanging wall of a major fault of the Bunker Hill mine, standing at 65" in one end of the zone and separated from the fault by a wedge of waste, see Fig. 3. This wedge pinches out near the center of the zone, at which point the ore dips 45", lying nearly on the fault, Fig. 4. The remaining portion lies on the fault and conforms to the fault dip of 35", Fig. 5. Open-pit mining for the top of the ore was considered, but since the ore zone dipped into and under the mountains, adverse waste-to-ore ratios precluded use of this method. The ore occurs in massive quartzite of sufficient strength to support untimbered drifts, crosscuts, and raises. Zones of weakness in the quartzite are bedding, jointing, and small faults or slips. The mineralization, which occurs as small stringers of sphalerite and galena as well as pyrite, creates another line of weakness. The mineral veins or veinlets in themselves are high-grade. Their size and regularity and the amount of barren quartzite by which they are separated determined the limits of mineable ore, which are all assay limits except for the one determined by the major fault. Block 1 Without any background of caving in this type of quartzite, engineers selected the first block on the very steep end of the zone. Compelling reasons prompted this decision. The steep portion of the ore in Block 1 was of the lowest grade, so that if difficulties were encountered no very valuable ore would be lost, while the experience gained might be applied in mining the remaining blocks. A block 200x200 ft was laid out, with four scrams spaced 50 ft apart for drawing and placed at a right angle to the strike. Finger raises were placed in a 25-ft interval grid pattern, with flat undercutting done by crosscuts at the undercut level 25 ft above

The following analysis was stimulated by a previous article on evaluation of the water problem at Eureka, Nev., which describes a method using formulas especially devised to calculate flow potential of extensive aquifers characterized by relatively even porosity and permeability throughout. The present discussion submits that the method was unsuitable for solving the kind of problem occurring at Eureka, where the amount of water available, rather than the flow potential, may have been the vital factor. IN an interesting article on evaluation of the water problem at Eureka, Nev.,1 W. T. Stuart describes how a difficult water problem, or one phase of it, may be evaluated by means of a small scale test. Test data are plotted by a method rendering, under certain conditions, a straight-line graph that can be projected to show how much the water table will be lowered by pumping at any specified rate for a given time. A formula is then used to determine the size of opening, or extent of workings, necessary to provide sufficient inflow to enable pumping to be maintained at that rate. At first glance this might seem the answer to a miner's prayer, but a word of caution is in order. It may not be the whole answer. Moreover, results obtained by the method described are reliable only for conditions approximating those assumed. Even where conditions do not meet this requirement, however, it may be possible to draw helpful inferences from the results, perhaps enough to facilitate another approach to evaluation of a problem. The two formulas Mr. Stuart used, the Theis formula and the one developed from it by Cooper and Jacob, were given field checks a number of years ago in valley alluvials by the Water Supply Div. of the U. S. Geological Survey and found to be reliable when the aquifer is very large in horizontal extent and sufficiently isotropic for the test well and observation wells to be in material of the same average permeability as the saturated part of the aquifer as a whole." Extensive valley alluvials, sands, and gravels can be evaluated in this way, and there are even cases in which the method could apply to porous limestones, such as flat beds of very large areal extent that have been submerged below the water table after extensive weathering. These are sometimes prolific sources of water for towns and industries. It is necessary for them to have been above the water table for some geologically long period of time in a fairly humid climate before submergence because the necessary high porosity and permeability, and large reservoir capacity, are the result of weathering, that is, of solution by the carbonic acid (H,CO3) in rainwater formed by the absorption of CO, from the air by raindrops, and this dissolving action must cease when all the H2CO3 has been consumed by re- action with the carbonate to form the more soluble bicarbonate. Consequently this weathering process is largely restricted to a zone that does not extend much below the water level, and submergence is necessary after the weathering to provide large reservoir capacity and good hydraulic continuity. On the other hand, water courses tend to form along faults and fractures in limestone, and to become enlarged by solution, well below water level when, as often happens, fresh meteoric water is circulated rapidly through them to considerable depth by hydrostatic pressure, as through an inverted syphon. Although the reservoir capacity of such water courses is relatively small they may extend far enough to tap more prolific sources. Cavities, and sometimes caves of considerable size, are found in limestones where the acid formed by the oxidation of sulphides has attacked them. This action can take place as deep below water level as surface water is carried by syphonic or artesian circulation, because the oxygen it carries in solution will not be consumed until it reacts with some reducing agent, such as a sulphide. Moreover, the formation of acid and solution of limestone in this way is not confined to the immediate vicinity of the sulphide. Oxidation of pyrite, for example, results in formation of acid in several successive stages, each taking place as more oxygen becomes available, as by the accession of fresh water into the circulation at some place beyond the sulphides. When the acid thus formed attacks the limestone, CO, is liberated and the ultimate effect of the complete oxidation of one unit of pyrite will be the removal of six times its volume of limestone as the sulphate and bicarbonate, both of which are relatively soluble. The reaction may be continued or renewed along a water course far from the site of the sulphides, where the small electric potential produced by contact with the limestone helped to start the reaction. Mr. Stuart refers2 0 caves in the old mining area in the block of Eldorado limestone southwest of the Ruby Hill fault at Eureka, Nev., and to the cavities encountered in drillholes in the downthrown block on the other side of the fault. Although he interprets these cavities as evidence that this formation was sufficiently isotropic (evenly porous and permeable) to give reliable results by the method he describes, they may, in fact, be entirely local conditions. HIS investigation originated as a result of a pre-vious experimental study' of the magnetic properties of Fe-Co alloys fabricated by the powder metallurgy technique. Densities of powder compacts prepared for the magnetics investigation varied from 7.45 to 7.70 g per cu cm or from 93 to 95 pct of the experimental value of 8.08 g per cu cm for a fused alloy of the same composition.' While this range of density is considered sufficiently high for most applications, the highest possible density is to be desired for maximum magnetic properties. By applying a technique similar to the one described above to a pure electrolytic iron powder, Rostoker³ was able to achieve a density of 7.895 g per cu cm, which is the highest density ever reported for sintered iron. While Rostoker's work involved the sintering of an elemental powder rather than a mixture, it was believed that higher densities should also have been obtained for alloys using the above technique because of the recoining operation and the high sintering temperature. Consequently, it was decided to investigate the various factors affecting the density of this alloy with the idea that such a study might lead to higher densities and, as a result, powder alloys having magnetic properties identical with those of the fused alloys. It was believed that the principal reason that near-theoretical densities for the powdered alloy were not obtained was the interference of gases with the normal sintering mechanism. When present during the sintering operation, gases can exert several harmful effects: they can remain on the particle surface and interfere with surface diffusion and plastic flow; they can be released and, under certain conditions, expand the void spaces through gas pressure; or they can remain trapped in the pores and exert a hydrostatic pressure that retards elimination of the pores. Jones,4 Rhines,5 Goetzel," and others have given the effect of gases in the sintering of powder compacts an extensive treatment. Among the more important sources of gases in the sintering process are dissolved gases, adsorbed gases, air entrapped during pressing, and gaseous products of chemical reactions. During sintering adsorbed gases are partly released at a relatively low temperature, while those gases entrapped during pressing cannot escape until their pressure is increased sufficiently through increasing temperature to expand the interpartjcle openings. The remaining adsorbed gases, gaseous reduction products, and dissolved gases produce a similar effect at the higher temperatures. If, in the sintering process, gas evolution occurs after the interpore channels have been sealed, an exaggerated expansion of the void spaces results. This is particularly true if the temperature is high enough for extensive plastic flow. In his fabrication of powder bars from tantalum, Balke7 had to consider the effect of adsorbed hydrogen and provide for its escape during sintering by limiting the compacting pressure to a maximum of 50 tons per sq in. The effect of gases entrapped during pressing was first noted by Trzebiatowski8 when he found that gold and silver powders decrease in density with increasing sintering temperature if pressed at 200 tsi, while they exhibit the usual increase when pressed at 40 tsi. Recent investigators9-11 have also noted that entrapped gases have an effect on the expansion of copper compacts during sintering. Proper provision for the escape of gaseous products of reduction must be made in order to avoid deleterious effects. Myers" states that in the sintering of electrolytic tantalum powder, the temperature was gradually raised to 2600°F with a pause at 2000°F to permit reduction of the oxides. Experimental Details For the present study, 50 pct Co-50 pct Fe compacts in the form of circular disks 1½ in. in diam and 0.15 in. thick were fabricated by the pressing and sintering of a mixture of the elemental powders. It was decided to follow the sintering process by means of liquid permeability measurements, because it was thought that such measurements might serve as a measure of relative pore sizes, as well as a possible indication of the point at which most of the interpore channels become sealed. However, since the permeability as measured by the flow of a liquid, such as ethylene glycol, does not give an absolute indication of the point where the pores have become isolated, a method for determining the percentage of pores connected to the surface was set up. As an additional cross check on the permeability measurements, metallographic methods were used to study the relative pore size. Finally, the property of ultimate interest, the density, was measured. Raw Materials: The powders used consisted of an annealed, 99.9 pct pure, —150 mesh grade of electrolytic iron powder, and a 98 pct pure, —200 mesh grade of reduced and comminuted cobalt powder. The cobalt powder was not further processed either by hydrogen reduction or annealing. The screen analyses for the iron and cobalt powders are given in Table I, while the chemical analyses for each type of powder are listed in Table 11. Table 111 gives the hydrogen loss measurements for the powders according to the M.P.A. Standard Method and for a higher temperature as well. Preparation of Compacts: Equal amounts of the elemental powders were mixed by rotation for 1 hr and then pressed into compacts approximately 0.15

Boron has been used to produce nonaging low-carbon sheet steel. Retention of the necessary minimum amount of about 0.006 pet partially killed the steel. Amounts exceeding about 0.012 pet increased the degree of deoxidotion, piping tendencies, and possibility of hot tearing in primary rolling. Semikilled practice resulted in good ingot yields and satisfactory surface quality. Aluminum added with the boron provided a protective de-oxidizer. Good drawobility was indicated by performances of the steel in a limited number of deep-drawing trials. Some problems with hot-tearing and boron-analysis procedures were overcome. Metal lographically, the boron semikilled steels revealed some structures not usually found in plain low-carbon steels. IN 1943 Low and Gensamer1 reported that strain aging, which hardens and embrittles ordinary low-carbon rimmed steel, was due to nitrogen and carbon, and that oxygen played a relatively unimportant role. Since then, many investigators have substantiated their findings and indicated that nitrogen is particularly potent. Commercially, today's most widely produced non-aging sheet steels for deep drawing are either aluminum killed or vanadium rimmed types. The difference in deoxidation practice, alone, is evidence that oxygen is apparently not an important consideration in control of strain aging. The fact that nitrogen is important is apparent in the consideration that has been given, knowingly or unknowingly, to the amount combined with aluminum and vanadium. Patents were granted to Hayes and Griffis2 for the processing of aluminum-killed steel, and to Epstein" for the manufacture of vanadium rimmed material. Certain prescribed steps in producing these steels can be correlated with the formation of the respective nitrides within certain temperature ranges below the usual hot-finishing temperatures. The potential nonaging properties of either type can be reduced or suppressed by cooling too rapidly to permit the aluminum or vanadium to combine with nitrogen. Subsequent suberitical annealing of the cold-rolled strip, however, normally forms the nitrides and produces the resistance to strain aging. Titanium-killed nonaging steel, described by Comstock,1 forms a nitride in the molten state and is essentially nonaging throughout its processing. Zirconium-killed steel, which was investigated briefly by the author,* appeared to have similar nitride- forming characteristics. It is known" that chromium can produce nonaging rimmed steel, but relatively little is known of the potentialities of some of the other nitride-forming elements such as boron, silicon, columbium, and cerium. In attempting to develop a new nonaging cold-rolled sheet steel with good drawability, the following factors were considered pertinent. Such a steel would necessarily have a low carbon content and therefore have a relatively high degree of oxidation when made in a basic open-hearth furnace. If the denitriding element were also a deoxidizer, a part of the addition would be lost as oxide. The degree of deoxidation would determine whether the steel is rimmed, semikilled or killed, and also could be expected to have an important bearing on ingot yields and ultimate surface quality. Assuming that the pattern for the production of cold-rolled sheets would not be changed to any great extent, the nitride must form in the molten steel, in hot rolling, in subsequent cooling, or in annealing. The nitride, once formed, should resist dissociation and be stable in the final product. Usually an excess of the nitride-forming element is required to combine with sufficient nitrogen. If the element used is a strong ferrite strengthener, a small excess may markedly decrease drawability. With aluminum and vanadium, about 0.03 to 0.05 pct in the steel is preferred. Epstein has said" that about 0.30 pct chromium is required. Titanium nonaging steels are hard unless a sufficient amount (about 0.30 pct) is added also to combine with the carbon. The cost of the necessary amounts of these latter two elements discourages commercial acceptance. Silicon was considered as a possible nitride former, but since amounts up to 0.10 pct in rimmed and semikilled steels do not induce marked resistance to strain aging, larger amounts are apparently required, which would tend to harden and strengthen the ferrite. Of the other elements mentioned, all but boron are expensive heavy-metal elements. Stoichi-ometrically, almost an equal weight of boron would be required to combine with the nitrogen—-ordinarily about 0.003 to 0.006 pct in scrap-practice open-hearth steels. Boron is a slightly stronger deoxidizer than carbon but is less powerful than zirconium, aluminum, or titanium. Thus a rimmed-steel practice might be possible. There is much in the technical literature concerning the hardenability effects of minute amounts of boron in killed steels but very little about its behavior in low-carbon material—particularly as a ferrite strengthener. The available data indicated a need for better information concerning the effects of boron in low-carbon strip steels. Experimental Work Development of a Boron-Treated Nonaging Strip Steel—Initial attempts to produce a boron-rimmed strip steel employed 3-ton basic open-hearth heats which could be teemed into molds large enough to sustain a normal rimming action. Boron as ferro-boron was added to the ladle in small amounts because of the reported hot-short character of aluminum-killed heat-treating grades containing more than about 0.005 pct boron. The Helen Mine, of the Algoma Steel Corporation, in the Michipicoten district, Ontario, Canada, has produced more than 6,240,290 tons of iron ore. Prior to and during World War I, 2,823,369 gross tons of brown ore were shipped, and from 1939 to the end of the 1944 season, 3,416,921 gross tons of siderite ore were produced from open-pit operations. Brief descriptions are given of the nature of the ore, the mining methods employed and the manner of treatment of the ore. Shipment of the finished product, known as Algoma sinter, is made to blast furnaces in both Canada and the United States. The iron-ore bodies—i.e., the oxide ores of the Old Helen and the siderite of the New Helen—are a part of a tabular shaped area of iron formation that extends over a length of more than 100,000 ft. and has a maximum width of 1000 ft. The ores are considered to be a product of introduction of iron-bearing material accompanied by replacement of the rocks already present. It is shown that introduction took place subsequent to the development of the major folded structures. It is believed the iron-bearing material emanated from an igneous source. Introduction The Michipicoten mining district derives its name from the Indian word1 meaning "place of bold promontories" or "region of big places," and anyone who has visited this part of Canada will agree that the district is well named. In 1897, there was active prospecting for gold in the district and the Ontario Bureau of Mines2 opened a recording office at the Hudson's Bay post at Michipicoten River. In the summer of 1897, Ben Boyer, probably searching for gold, discovered an outcrop of brown iron ore at the east end of a small lake, less than 8 miles, in an air line, northeast of the nearest point on Michipicoten Harbour. In the following year, extensive surface exploration and diamond drilling disclosed a commercial body of nonbessemer brown ore, possibly 700 ft. long and 200 ft. wide, of about the following analysis:3 Fe (natural), 57.15 per cent; S, dried at 212°F.. 0.113; SiO2, dried at 212°F., 4.00; P, dried at 212°F., 0.125. The property (Figs. 1-3) was taken over by E. V. Clergue and ultimately was transferred to the Algoma Steel Corporation. The Algoma Central Railway shortly afterward built its line from Michipicoten Harbour to the mine, together with an ore dock at the Harbour. Thus, within three years of its discovery, the mine had adequate shipping facilities and a market for its ore. Production of Brown Ore and Pyrite The first shipment of brown ore was made in July 1930. By 1939, the mine was shipping at the rate of 170,000 long tons

The use of wooden supports, supplementary to the primary method of roof control using roof bolts in mines, consumes over 3 million cubic meters of hardwood in the U.S. annually. These supports arc primarily used in the form of cribs and posts. Along with a rapid depletion of high quality timber resources, supplies fluctuate seasonally, costs are escalating rapidly, and product quality is highly variable. Environmental considerations of global climate change put additional pressure on deforestation for utilization of timber for artificial supports. On the other hand, management of coal combustion byproducts (GCBs) from power plants has become a major issue to maintaining a healthy coal industry. The USA currently produces over 100 million tons of CCBs annually and the average cost for their management in the US is about $20/ton. This cost is expected to escalate rapidly with tougher environmental regulations. The principal author has been directing research, development, and demonstration studies for CCBs-based artificial supports and lightweight structural materials in mines for the past seven years and has made significant progress toward commercially viable products. More specifically, first and second generation crib elements and post elements have been developed, characterized analytically, and demonstrated in the field. It is estimated that about 2.5 x 10" tons of fly ash could be utilized for artificial supports in U.S coal mines and this would double if these materials were utilized in non-coal mines as well. The author believes that CCBs-based artificial supports have the potential to replace wooden supports and blocks with better performance and cost competitiveness while managing CCBs in an environmentally sound manner. This paper focuses on the development and field demonstration of CCBs-based artificial supports for use in underground mines, and its pilot scale fabrication facility. Recent analysis results on engineering performance evaluation of the developed crib under various loading conditions using finite element method are presented. The following comments highlight the developments: I ). Engineered artificial supports, crib and post elements, using CCBs as a major constituent, have significant potential for application in mines because their structural performance is significantly better than wooden cribs counterparts. 21. Engineered crib elements provide about 50% larger area for air-flow than a conventional wooden crib. 3). Engineered crib elements are not flammable. 4). Each engineered crib element utilizes about 10 kg of fly ash, about 40 % of the weight of crib element- Therefore, a typical crib 2.0 m high utilizes about 200 kg of fly ash. 5). Each 16.5 cm diameter engineered post utilizes 50 kg of fly ash. 6). Assuming 3.0 million cu. meter of wood consumed for post and crib support systems, it is estimated that about 4 - 5 million tons of fly ash may be utilized for supports fabrication in the USA. 7). An engineered post has excellent post-failure characteristics similar to wood. In addition, the engineered post also has excellent loading and unloading characteristics close to the yield point of about 75% of the ultimate load carrying capacity.
