"Morro do Ouro Mine is a high tonnage/low-grade mine located in Paracatu, Minas Gerais State, Brazil. The mines move around 55 Mt of ore per year at an average grade of 0.4 g/t. The auriferous mineralisation of Morro do Ouro is related to hydrothermal fluids rich in arsenic (As), gold (Au), lead (Pb) and zinc (Zn). These percolated along favourable structures contained within phyllites of Upper Proterozoic age and defined a mineralised megaboudin which outcropped with 4 km extension and up to 2 km in width. The litologies in the interior of this structure are typically more deformed, sericitised and sulfidised, and exhibit the development of quartz boudins in the centre of the more deformed zones where are found the higher Au grades and the coarser sulfide crystals. Gold is preferentially associated with arsenopyrite, mainly occurring in fractures or aggregations of crystals and is rarely in solid solution or refractory. Over 90 per cent of the gold contained in the sulfide ore is free or extractable by cyanidisation. The current mineral reserve is 17.9 Mt at 0.403 g/t published at the end of 2012.In order to get a good grade estimation that represents the orebody more accurately a solids methodology was used to distinguish the different orebodies. Before 2011 the orebodies were worked with two domains relating to the weathered mantle. The B1 ore, which is oxidised, is located at the top of mineralisation, and is used to feed Plant 1. Underneath B2 ore, which is fresh sulfide bearing, represents over 30 years of production in Plant 2.In order to improve the predictability of gold grade estimation in geological modelling and to get a better predicting behaviour of each domain on the deposit, studies were carried out in which it was possible to show a correlation between elements and the mineralisation. One strong correlation and spatial distribution between Au and As, As and sulfur (S), Au and Pb, Au and Zn were found.Based on geochemistry, mineral correlations, amount of sulfide, structural deformation, texture of sulfides and the daily experience of the mine, it was possible to create solids that individualised bodies with similar mineralogical and chemical characteristics using the parameters listed above.After 2011, a new modelling concept was proposed and built with 11 different domains, compared with the previous, and with two more parameters: recovery acid neutralised capacity (ANC).Each of these bodies have different behaviours in mineral processing, like flotation and metallurgy. For example, bodies with pyrrhotite bring problems in the flotation, bodies with high arsenic do not recover well, bodies with high As with coarse texture have good recovery, bodies with fine texture do not have good adherence in production.In the present state of knowledge, protocols are being developed for bench testing to predict the recovery of each geochemical domain aiming to include these in the geological model for the parameter recovery. Differing thermal histories in and around a weld can lead to differences in grain size, phase composition and morphology of precipitates; mechanical properties will vary accordingly. Hardness testing gives limited information and the machining and testing of tensile and/or impact specimens that would reveal these variations (which may occur over very small distances) is not practical. Therefore, in this investigation, shear punch testing was applied to measure the variation in the room temperature mechanical properties of a welded pipeline steel.

The concept of vertical pit mining has been developed as an alternative mining method for the exploitation from surface of small, vertical or near-vertical, massive orebodies down to depths of some 200 m, where ore extraction from conventional open pit excavations is rendered uneconomic due to high associated waste:ore mining ratio. Systematic lateral support maintains vertical pit sides, thereby minimising waste mining volumes. Stability analysis techniques have been developed for design of this lateral support, with the support quantum, primarily comprising long cable anchors, dependent upon country rock strength characteristics and pit configuration. Where the cost of support is less than the cost of the comparable conventional pit waste excavation, vertical pit mining becomes an economically viable alternative, additionally providing the benefit of reduced environmental impact and rehabilitation requirements for the mining area. The technique has been successfully applied for the mining of a chrome deposit in Zimbabwe to an 80 m depth, believed to be unique in the world, and a full feasibilty study for a 3000 m2 diamond pipe has been carried out for mining to 200 m depth.

To determine the torque-load relationship for SIB-inch (nominal)-diameter roof bolts, the Bureau of Mines tested 5 makes of expansion shells and 2 types of bolts (regular and high-strength) in 2 sandstone and 2 shale mine roofs. Unused flat-steel bearing plates in as-received condition were used in these tests. The relationship between torque and load was found to be approximately 50 pounds of load per foot-pound of torque for both the regular and high-strength bolts. This relationship is valid up to 130 foot-pounds for the regular bolts and up to 175 foot-pounds for the high-strength bolts. A torque of 130 foot-pounds on a regular bolt will produce a load of 6,150 ± 1,910 pounds 90 percent of the time, and a torque of 175 foot-pounds on a high-strength bolt will produce 8,050 ± 2,750 pounds 90 percent of the time. Above these values, the torque-load relationship tends to be erratic due to binding between the bolt and plug threads. Binding causes excessive torque to be expended in producing torsion in the bolt rather than tension. This torsion adversely affects the yield load of the bolt. Therefore, the installed torques should not exceed the 130-and l75-foot-pound values. A statistical analysis of the data showed that the torque-load relationship was not significantly affected by the type of bolt or expansion shell unit but might have been affected by the type of rock.

The solubility of carbon in electrorefined vanadium was determined to be approximately 0.27 wt pct at the eutectic temperature 1,650° C and 0.03 wt pct at 700° C. The tensile strength and hardness of vanadium increased with car-bon content to the solubility limit, but this effect was small, probably because of the narrow solubility range. Between the solubility limit and 0.3 weight-percent carbon, the second phase had essentially no strengthening effect in vanadium. The second phase, observed metallographically at the grain boundaries and within the grains, was shown by autoradiography to contain high-carbon concentrations. This second phase was identified as VgC by X-ray analysis. The VgC in the grain boundaries contributed largely to the poor cold-and-hot workability of vanadium-carbon alloys. Increased concentrations of V2C occurred at the grain boundaries of the high-carbon alloy ingots as a result of homogenization at 1,600° C for 1 hour. Alloy ingots containing more than 0.36 wt pet carbon (a calculated 2.9 wt pct VaC) following homogenization, cracked severely and failed by intergranular fracture upon swaging at 900° C.

The effect of alloying elements on the mechanical properties and thermal expansion of 336 casting alloy usually used as piston alloy which has low thermal expansion and very good high-temperature mechanical properties and good wear resistance was investigated. The mechanical properties and thermal expansion characteristic of samples with different combination of alloying elements, which enhance to reduce the cost of products, have been studies, The results show remarkable increase in the mechanical properties with increasing the amount of Cu and Mg, while are reduced with increasing amount of Ni, On the other hand, the use of eutectic aluminum alloy as 336 alloy with higher percent of Cu and Mg and lower percent of Ni are recommended for industry, due to economical viewpoint and satisfactory properties.

The long-term mine scheduling is the optimal decision on how to extract and process the mining reserves. The resulting plan is mainly driven by economic, metallurgical, and geological factors. Accounting for their uncertainties leads to a robust solution and the feasibility for economic-risk quantification. In this work, we model the spatial uncertainty of grade distributions of multiple correlated elements, by using a multivariate morphing transformation. The result is a set of multivariate geostatistical realizations of the grades, which honor the conditioning data, the direct and cross variograms, and the multivariate statistical distribution, inferred from a set of samples. These models are the input in a reinforcement learning framework, adopted to train a deep neural network that considers the grade uncertainty and leads to an optimum mine plan after training using deep Q-Learning. Mining and processing capacities, as well as economic parameters and metallurgical constraints, are incorporated as the reinforcement learning environment rules. The method is validated on a real deposit, providing insights for future applications.

Silicon Smelters consumes more than 80000 t/a of wood-derived charcoal as carbonaceous reductant in the production of silicon metal. More than 10% of this material is discarded as fines (<6 mm) generated due to abrasion during processing. Charcoal fine residues (<650 μm) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) binder were used in this study to produce mechanically strong charcoal briquettes for metallurgical application as carbonaceous reductant. The PVA binder was added in mass percentages of 1, 3, and 5 wt% to the charcoal fines. The compressive strength, abrasion resistance index (ARI), drop shatter resistance (SRI), and water resistance index (WRI) were measured as functions of curing for up to 7 days under atmospheric conditions, and the results compared with metallurgical grade coarse charcoal. The ash content of the produced briquettes was found to be high (6.6–8.0%) compared with the coarse charcoal (1–3%). The 3 and 5 wt% PVA-bound briquettes were found to be the strongest, with compressive strengths of 40 and 115 kg/cm2 respectively, with WRI values of 75 and 73% respectively. The produced briquettes were found to have lower ARI and SRI values compared to the coarse charcoal. Future work should include beneficiation of the fine charcoal discards prior to briquetting, and an increase in binder addition to above 6 wt% to improve the ARI and SRIn.

"CANADA'S ECONOMY TODAY is about two-fifths larger than it was six years ago, as measured by the total volume of production of goods and services. Such an achievement has been a rare phenomenon in Canada's first one hundred years. Excluding the forced-draft expansions which took place under war-time conditions, perhaps only the first decade of this century recorded a performance of greater dimensions, when, with massive immigration, the opening up of the West and a powerful array of well-de-signed development policies, the country was looking forward confidently to a great future of nation-building in the twentieth century.What makes Canada's over-all economic advance since 1961 all the more remarkable is that six years ago there was virtually no one in this country who anticipated an expansion of such dimensions. Back in the buoyant conditions of 1956-57, perhaps such an achievement would not have seemed beyond our grasp. After 1957, however, Canada stumbled through an extended period of slow economic growth, high unemployment and substantial and widespread under-utilization of its productive capacity. By the early 1960's, conditioned by the emergence of substantial, persistent and pervasive slack in the economy, t h e r e were few Canadians bold enough to anticipate that their economy was about to embark on a Great Expansion. However, this •is, in fact, what occurred. Beginning early in 1961, Canada moved forward into a sweeping advance which grew into the longest and largest peacetime business expansion in Canada's first century as a nation -a truly great expansion by any standard of measurement. This strong thrust has moved Canada into the front ranks of over-all economic expansion among the industrially advanced nations in the 1960's."

This report, consisting mostly of float-and-sink data and washability curves, has been prepared in connection with an exhaustive study of coal preparation in Alabama conducted, by the U, S. Bureau of Mines and the University of Alabama with the cooperation of the different coal operators On the basis of the float-and-sink data, an attempt has been made to determine approximately the extent of ash and sulphur reduction obtainable under given conditions on coal from the mines which were sampled, In the coal-producing districts of Alabama a great deaf of attention has been given in recent years to the problem of improving preparation methods so as to obtain from various coal beds the best possible grade of washed coal. This is especially so where the washed coal is used for the making of metallurgical coke in by-product plants or where there are possibilities of using the coal for this purpose. In the manufacture of metallurgical coke, the sulphur content of the coal is a very important consideration. It is quite often the determining factor as to whether or not a certain coal can be used for coke making. In the studies which form the basis for this report, all samples have been analyzed for sulphur in order to obtain information regarding the possibilities of sulphur elimination as well as ash reduction, and the samples on which reports are made were obtained from beds that are characterized by rather high percentages of sulphur. In connection with the present investigations of coal preparation in Alabama a standardized method of interpreting float-and-sink data has been used extensively for predicting the ash and sulphur reduction and yields obtainable in a commercial washing plant from various sizes of raw coal and from the raw coal as a whole after a certain degree of crushing. This method, which will be explained in subsequent chapters, was used in interpreting the data contained in this report. The samples used for these washability studies were obtained from the following mines in the Warrior field of Alabama: Beltona mine on the Jefferson bed; Dolomite and Mulga mines on the Pratt bed; Coal Valley No. 163 and Coal Valley No. 11 mines on the Corona bed; Cedar Cove mine on the Carter bed.

Synthetic water with a calcium concentration of 80 ppm and 500 ppm was prepared and the flotation results obtained compared to a simple electrolyte in order to determine the effect water quality has on pentlandite and pyroxene surface alteration and, ultimately, floatability. During the study, the possible effect of interactions between the minerals investigated and Ca2+ ions in the presence of sodium isobutyl xanthate was studied at pH 6 and pH 9 by means of zeta potential determinations, microflotation tests and ToF-SIMS analysis. The results obtained have demonstrated that water quality does play a significant role in flotation recovery at the experimental conditions used.

"Three arc- melted ingots, two of a t itanium-7 percent manganese all oy and the third of unalloyed titanium, were forged and rolled into 3/ 4-inch plate; comparative data were obtained on these processes. The finished plate, part of which was used by the Naval Bureau of Ordnance, was tested for mechanical and other properties.These properties were correlated with sponge purity, forging technique, rolling temperature, and cooling rate from the rolling temperature. For the alloy material, transformation data were obtained, and their age-hardening characteristics were studied. The temperature-impact relationship was established for rolled sections from all three ingots.INTRODUCTIONArc -melted ingots of unalloyed titanium and a titanium-manganese alloy were fabricated into plate under closely controlled conditions by personnel of the Metals and Alloys Section, Physical Metallurgy Branch, Bureau of Mines, College Perk, Md. This program was cosponsored by the Naval Bureau of Ordnance. Bureau of Mines interest lay in correlating the processing procedures with the mechanical properties of the finished plate.Considerable data have been published recently on constitution diagrams and properties of titanium-manganese alloys in genera1. 3/ 4/5/6/ However, little if any correlation between processing schedules and end results has been published, particularly with respect to the present commercial production of the proprietary titanium manganese alloys . Several factors in the production of titanium and titanium alloys have a pronounced influence on the physical and mechanical properties of the finished product: (1) The degree and nature of impurities in the base materials, ( 2) the amount of impurities introduced during the melting cycle and their distribution, (3) the homogeneity of the alloy, (4) forging, (5) rolling, and ( 6) final heat-treating cycles. All of these item£ are important from a metallurgical standpoint in producing the desired end properties in the metal."

Planned tunnel projects with advanced geotechnical investigations are more frequently being suspended because of changes in funding, politics, or local priorities. Some of these projects are ultimately canceled, some decelerate and stall, some resume after a short pause, and some restart after being mothballed for several years. The restarted project often differs at least slightly from the predecessor project in terms of alignment and design concept. This paper describes approaches to evaluating the quality and completeness of previous geotechnical investigations for a re-activated project, considering technological advances as well as changes in regulatory requirements, contracting approach, and site conditions which may have taken place in the time since the project was suspended.

The principles of three-dimensional geological modelling are well understood and routinely used. Sample data is collated and geostatistical tools used to ensure that sample data is suitable for its end use, which is typically a block model that is appropriate for mine planning. What has become increasingly apparent is that physical rock properties and geotechnical parameters need to be incorporated into the three-dimensional geological model to create an integrated mine model.The approach to the collection of geotechnical information is not as highly prescribed and controlled as collection of geological data. Commonly, the geotechnical data set is incomplete and inconsistent, with little consideration of what the end use will be by those collecting the data, or how the geotechnical data might relate to the geological data. In some cases, specific geotechnical investigation programs are completed, yet correlation between those programs and previously collected data is rarely undertaken to the same level of diligence as found in the geology field.There are some obstacles that need to be considered when attempting to incorporate geological parameters, such as grade, lithology, and geological domains with geotechnical information such as rock quality designation (RQD), rock mass rating (RMR), rock strength, and geotechnical domains into the same three-dimensional block model. Interpolation or geostatistical estimation methods used for grade estimates might not be appropriate for many components in rock characterisation, particularly search geometries. A number of examples are provided to illustrate issues underlying some of the data collection procedures, and their effects on three-dimensional geotechnical modelling.The example presented attempts to highlight generally observed shortcomings in the collection of geotechnical information, parameters which need to be considered when combining geological and geotechnical data into the same model, and the benefits of having a combined block model from the beginning of a project.CITATION:Zunica, K and Penney, A R, 2014. Mine planning processes are continuously evolving, increasing in complexity, and are required to be developed in shorter timeframes, often missing important steps in the process. Underground coal mines are also moving into more challenging environments, with the more favourable resources having been exhausted. In addition to traditional mine planning processes there is an increasing level of complexities associated with parallel systems including the preparation of Joint Ore Reserves Committee (JORC) compliant estimates (JORC, 2012 and Guidelines Review Committee, 2014) or seeking critical regulatory development consent to undertake mining. There is a clear link between geotechnical considerations and success of mining operations, and therefore it is essential that such considerations are elevated in both status and priority. It is obvious that geotechnical considerations are paramount in any mine, however it is imperative to accept that such considerations, and the collection of information relating to such, are undertaken from the onset of any mining project. Operating uranium mill tailings containment and mill decommissioning activities are regulated by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) through numerous regulatory mechanisms. Reduction of radon emissions from tailings disposal areas, remedial actions to return groundwater to baseline constituent concentrations, and 200-to 1,000-year stabilization of tailings are major focus areas of regulation. The cumulative economic impact and uncertainty associated with regulation are very significant and will hinder future development of uranium milling facilities.

"Bridge abutments supported on pile foundations are often constructed over weak and compressible soils. The consolidation settlements induced by the embankment loads are known to result in downdrag and lateral forces on the piles supporting the bridge abutments. The performance of a pile group including inclined piles embedded in consolidating soils was investigated numerically considering surcharge loads from approach embankment construction. A two-dimensional numerical model was constructed using commercial finite element software PLAXIS and calibrated against field measurements of the abutment movements observed on Brookdale Avenue Underpass Structure located on the Macdonald-Cartier Freeway in Ontario between Cornwall and the Quebec border. The soft soil model (SSM) was used to simulate the constitutive behavior of the compressible soil deposit. The SSM model parameters were determined based on the laboratory tests. Subsequently, time dependant development of downdrag effects was comparatively evaluated for vertical and inclined single piles as well as a pile group that included both vertical and inclined piles.Results showed that drag loads increased with the consolidation time. However, majority of accumulation of drag loads took place within first 120 days after installation of piles. The results also indicated that the shear forces and bending moments are controlled by the lateral spreading of foundation soil and their accumulation is proportional to consolidation time. The large axial strains caused by large downdrag forces are considered to have yielded the piles and this is a possible reason for unusual abutment movements. The results presented in this study are considered to be of interest to researchers and practitioners.1. IntroductionDeep foundation units are widely used for supporting bridge piers and abutments, where weaker surficial soils preclude shallow foundations. Particularly in Ontario, semi-integral and integral abutment bridges are typically supported on end-bearing steel driven piles. The construction of approach embankments over weaker, compressible soils results in significant vertical and lateral soil movements, which induce additional loads on piles supporting the abutments. In order to minimize such effects, preloading and surcharging are commonly employed approaches to avoid unanticipated settlements prior to the installation of piles. Other alternatives such as aggregate pier supported approach embankment are also being studied as the schedule restrictions imposed by preloading and surcharging becomes cost prohibitive (Turan et al. 2012)."
