Almost a quarter of a century since Bridges (1993) documented techniques for the assessment of ground conditions in a seminal paper in the Proceedings Second International Mining Geology Conference, the necessary role of the geologist in recording geotechnical data on exploration properties and in mines remains. Typically, the geologist is the first professional on the exploration property. Of course, most exploration properties don’t become mines. However, when a property does start to come together and form a coherent mineral deposit and professionals from across the minerals industry spectrum, including specialist geotechnical engineers, become increasingly involved, it remains the geologist who has the most intimate knowledge of the deposit. By association, that knowledge extends to the character of the rock mass.Throughout the various phases of prefeasibility, feasibility, construction and production, culminating in the mature mine, the knowledge of the rock mass held by the geologists continues to grow. In the current era of minimising cost and optimising profit, meeting the requirements and expectations of stakeholders ranging from fellow employees to investors, industry and financial regulators and the broader public, in a social environment where occupational health and safety concerns are of uppermost concern in every endeavour, the value of the geologists’ observations cannot be understated. Mines nowadays employ more geotechnical engineers than they did in the early 1990s when Bridges (1993) wrote his paper. More funds are available for specific geotechnical investigations of exploration properties and mines; none-the-less, those programs remain limited in their extent and there is a wealth of additional data available for collection with the appropriate training, at little additional effort. Fundamentally it is all about the numbers. Any hole not geotechnically logged is a hole that will need to be drilled again if the data is required. Any face, surface or underground, not geotechnically mapped is one that may need to be mapped a second time. That doesn’t mean every hole or every face. However, it is the proposition of this paper that the opportunity for additional geotechnical data to be gathered during traditional geological investigations is an opportunity that cannot be ignored. Occupational health and safety requirements demand that the geotechnical risks associated with mining are appropriately managed. Mining regulations in most Australian and overseas jurisdictions requires the consideration of geotechnical risk through formalised management plans. The Joint Ore Reserves Committee (JORC) Code requires the consideration of modifying factors more than ever before. The benefit to be realised through improved geotechnical understanding by geologists on the ground leads to improved occupational health and safety, optimised reporting compliance, and improved financial and social outcomes for the exploration property and ultimately for the mine that follows.CITATION:Hills, P B, 2017. "The City of Ottawa’s Combined Sewage Storage Tunnel consists of two interconnected tunnels totaling 6.2 km with a diameter of 3m including access shafts and hydraulic structures which connect to the City’s most critical sewers. This tunnel will be built 15m to 30m below ground in the downtown core adjacent to, and crossing below, the Light Rail Tunnel, which introduces additional considerations in terms of sequencing and risk mitigation. The City embarked on a unique Procurement Process to address the risks involved with a large tunnel project and those associated with tunneling below downtown, underneath and adjacent to UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and connecting to live critical sewers. This paper describes the unique procurement approach employed and the contractual risk mitigation measures developed to provide the best value while minimizing risk. Specific features include Market Sounding, using a Fairness Commissioner, Contractor Prequalification and Risk Mitigation Measures in the Tender documents. INTRODUCTION This paper describes how the City of Ottawa (the City) and the project design team developed a strategic Procurement Process and Tender that incorporated industry best practices for technical and contractual risk management for the Combined Sewage Storage Tunnel (CSST) project. The process was unique in that, while it employed a systematic review of project risks, it also solicited input from industry, stakeholders and provincial and federal partners to develop the request for Tender for this traditional design-bid-build project. Key drivers for this approach were initiated from the City’s concerns for cost control, cost certainty and overall project risk mitigation. To address these concerns, the City implemented the risk review and mitigation process right from the project design team selection. It was critical that the project design team embraced this risk management philosophy and carried it through each phase of the project. This paper serves as an excellent resource for municipalities or other owners embarking on a similar tunnel project, on how to properly apply industry best practices and the benefits of using them."

Investment decision for large mining projects imply an enormous financial risk and therefore, require a more complex risk evaluation methodology taking into account all sources of uncertainty from each process in the project value chain. Generally, the main sources of risk are those related to uncertainty on grade and other techical variables of the orebody. In this study, conditional simulation is applied to develop a risk management model to quantify and to manage financial risk associated to uncertainty on the grade of the orebody. The model was validated in case study on a real porphyry copper orebody in Chile.

As open pit mining of a deposit deepens, the cost of extraction may increase up to a threshold where transitioning to mining through underground methods is more profitable. This paper provides an approach to identifying an optimal depth at which a mine should transition from open pit to underground mining. The value of a set of candidate transition depths is investigated by optimising the production schedules for each depth’s unique open pit and underground operations. By considering the sum of the open pit and underground mining portions’ value along with the cost of transitioning corresponding to each candidate transition depth, the optimal transition depth can be identified. The optimisation model presented is based on a stochastic integer program that integrates geological uncertainty. As an input, the stochastic integer program utilises a set of several stochastic simulations that represent equally probable scenarios of the mineral resource. This group of simulations describes the uncertainty in the deposit, while the optimiser aims to maximise value based on discounted profits of both the open pit and underground components of the deposit.CITATION:MacNeil, J and Dimitrakopoulos, R, 2014. Silver consumption in the arts and industries of the United States during 1930 and 1931 has remained remarkably near the high level established in 1929. Undoubtedly the sharp drop in the price of silver has been an important factor in supporting consumption, but silver's peculiar properties and uses probably have been an even more compelling reason for its sustained utilization. In its most important use - sterling silverware - it seemingly has most serious competition, but well established tradition protects the demand for sterling ware and the law forbids the term "sterling" to be applied to any material not containing at least 92.5 per cent silver. The photographic industry is dependent upon properties of certain silver salts possessed by no other material. Consequently silver is indispensable to all photography, including the huge motion picture industry. Other uses for silver could be listed which, because of special features, likewise have tended to maintain the consumption of silver in the arts and industries of the United States. The figures which this report makes available for the first time are the detailed silver consumption figures for the arts and industries of the United States for 1930 and 1931. These figures have been tabulated with the previously published(3) figures for 1928 and 1929 thus presenting a 4-year statistical record of silver consumption. All quantities are given in troy ounces, 1,000 fine.

The effect of blast loads on beams is one of the main issues in the analysis of steel structure. In this study, experimental tests on steel beam under blast loading, and also numerical simulation by the Autodyn software to analyse these structures, is discussed. Experiments on steel beam size of 12 by Emulite4 explosive with 30 mm diameter and cortex is done. Nickel smelting and converting can be viewed as processes in which iron is either partitioned or transported between matte and slag. Metal recovery depends on the mass of iron transported to slag, the thermodynamic environment in which the transport is made, and the extent to which the slag, once formed, is left in contact with the matte. The importance of these effects is discussed with reference to a new equation which describes metal recovery in terms of a mass balance and a thermodynamically related parameter which is easily measured in practice.

As the global mining industry continues to grapple with ‘black swans’ (high consequence / low frequency events) for health, safety and environmental losses, the focus is shifting from risk assessment of these events to risk management using selected purposeful controls that reduce the risk.Fundamental to critical control management (CCM) is a soundly based rationale for selecting the right controls for each and every risk. The approach should be based on a thorough understanding of the dynamics of the event: What causes it? How frequently will it occur? How likely is the consequence to be realised? This is typically done through a bowtie and methodical numerical risk analysis. Core to this step, then, is the structure and content of the bowtie; specifically, the analytic architecture that is used to construct the bowtie. Different architectures yield different constructions, and bowties are no different.Although bowties for operational health and safety (OHS) hazards appear to have a common architecture, they are not generic. It is important to stress that they contain site specific information, are prepared by site based operational teams, and vary from site to site to reflect each site’s operational conditions. They are often a product of the knowledge and understanding of the operational teams involved, may be prone to human error, and potentially miss latent hazards that may have been embedded early in the planning, design or construction phase of a mine or facility, or within the mining equipment. Overcoming these deficiencies through constant re-evaluation of the risks, and challenging the content on the bowtie will help to minimise the chance that something will be missed.This paper will cover key themes in bowtie architecture, introduce the concept of barrier models for high consequence event (HCE) bowties and present a relevant case study to illustrate the issues that determine quality in bowtie construction and critical control (barrier) selection and management.CITATION:Mills, R, Andrew, M and Reynolds, H, 2016. Mine design and selection of ore processing capacity depend upon a correct estimate of the grade-tonnage distribution. The estimate must reflect what can be recovered and processed. The McCoy/Cove operation in central Nevada, USA, is a gold and silver mine. Case studies of recoverable reserve estimation for gold and silver were made using multiple indicator kriging and the log-affine variance correction. From this model, the grade-tonnage distribution was constructed. Optimal pits were generated by utilizing the distribution, and the results were compared with the pit generated by ordinary kriging. Studies indicate that the proposed method for multi-metal recoverable reserve estimation is more accurate than ordinary kriging in terms of both tons and the grade. Using recoverable reserves for mine design will maximize global recovery of mineral resources.

ERAMET, through its subsidiary COMILOG, have rights to a rich niobium and rare earth deposit inGabon. The Mabounié deposit, is located 50 kmfromthe town of Lambaréné, in a fairly remote location. ERAMET has been developing a process to recover value metals for several years, and approached Hatch Ltd. to design a sizeable Demonstration Plant to help them further optimize the process, and prove the flowsheet is technically viable. The process employs concentration techniques to recover an upgraded Nb/REE feed material for processing in the subsequent leach step. Rare earths and niobium are selectively leached, and subsequently precipitated. Following precipitation, rare earths undergo bulk separation and are purified to produce LRE and mixed MRE/HRE products, which will be further processed by Third Parties. This paper provides a high-level overview of the process, summarizes the motivation for a Demonstration Plant in the vicinity of the deposit, and discusses technical challenges faced during the flowsheet definition and design phase. Key challenges are focused on and summaries of the methodologies used to address each challenge, as well as the solutions to overcome the challenges, are discussed. The paper provides motivation for further process simplification and concludes with a project update.

A new waterfront park was developed on Long Island in close proximity to the East River and Newtown Creek. The existing ground consisted of fill over soft organic clay, medium dense silty sand, glacial till and schist bedrock. The ground was initially raised to preload the underlying soft soils to stabilize the ground in preparation for site development. The ground was subsequently cut down to temporary grades for installation of foundation piles for the overlook structures and construction of reinforced concrete cantilever retaining walls forming pathways located adjacent to the water bodies. The retaining walls were located in two rows at different elevations along the sides of a steep embankment. Where the pathways converge, some of the walls were too close to each other, and were redesigned as a combined U-wall with a common base slab. The individual retaining walls were designed for adequate bearing, sliding and overturning resistance. Ground anchors were installed to enhance global stability of the retaining walls. This paper presents the design considerations for the retaining walls for various loading conditions, and evaluation of the trial and proof tests for the anchors. INTRODUCTION The New York City Master Plan included the transformation of an approximately 30-acre parcel of land in Long Island City, Queens, New York from a former manufacturing zone into a residential, commercial and recreational zone for middle-income community. The site was located at Hunters Point South along the eastern shoreline of the East River and Newtown Creek (Figure 1). The development included low to high- rise residential buildings, a public school, and retail structures. Open spaces were provided along the East River and Newtown Creek waterfronts in the form of a continuous park providing for recreational and community-related activities. Waterfront structures included small park buildings, walkways and viewing platforms. The shoreline was surrounded by revetments as part of the flood mitigation strategy. The project involved extensive site re-grading and several retaining walls were constructed. The earthwork volume amounted to approximately 47,000 cubic yard of imported fill and 93,000 cubic yard of cut. The exposed height of the retaining walls ranged from 3 to 15 feet. This paper focuses on the design and construction of the retaining walls for the project.

"Driven piles were selected to support the Fraser Heights Bridge bents. Piles were a key component of the top-down construction approach, which was adopted for minimizing potential impacts on an environmentally sensitive wetland. Project requirements mandated verification of pile capacities using dynamic methods. More than 40 Pile Driving Analyzer (PDA) tests were performed. The subsurface conditions were highly variable. On the east side, piles extended through loose sands, soft silts/clays, and two peat layers and were founded in glacial till-like soils at about 45 m depth. However, on the west side, till-like materials were so shallow that it was difficult to drive the piles sufficiently deep to obtain the necessary lateral support. This paper provides an overview of the geotechnical considerations of the bridge design and top-down construction approach, and expands on the presentation of PDA results and how they compared to pile capacity estimation methods and parameters recommended in the applicable design codes.INTRODUCTIONThe Fraser Heights Bridge (FHB) was a component of the Fraser Heights Connector (FHC), a 2 km section of the South Fraser Perimeter Road (SFPR), constructed as part of the Port Mann/Highway 1 (PMH1) Improvement Project. The FHC is located in northeast Surrey BC (Fig. 1).Two major design and construction determinants were: 1) a mandated tight schedule to provide a non-tolled alternative to a new toll bridge; and, 2) an obligation that construction had to occur with minimal impact on the environmentally sensitive wetland the FHB crossed, including limiting the footprint of the permanent and temporary works to less than 45 m2, and prohibiting construction access onto the wetland. Construction equipment was only allowed on the wetland on temporary trestles or on the finished structure. This latter requirement resulted in the bridge being constructed span by span, using a top-down approach."

The safe and optimal installation of roof support remains one of the biggest challenges in underground mining today. Traditional hand-held, roofbolt installation in conventional mining has been replaced, in a lot of mining operations, by mechanized equipment. This was a first step to moving the operators out of the unsafe working environment and a start on the trend toward a changed support regime in mechanized mining. However, the challenge of handling of the drill steel itself, as well as inserting resin cartridges and bolts, remains a major hazard and the cause of many lost-time injuries. The paper describes and discusses developments in this area, of mechanized bolting and on-board automation, presenting solutions to known problems, achievements to date, and future developments. The solutions presented will identify with addressing customer needs while touching on possibilities for further technology changes, keeping focus on the safety aspect for operators and the need to bring the operators even further away from the unsafe working environment. The-state-of-the-art technology in mechanized bolting equipment is presented and a brief outlook on the past, current, and future developments is given.

The Second Narrows Water Supply Tunnel, Burrard Inlet Crossing project for the Greater Vancouver Water District entails deep shaft construction, subway sized pressurized face tunneling through highly variable ground conditions, installation of three permanent steel water mains and construction of elaborate valve chambers adjacent to either shaft. The paper discusses key elements of the planning and implementation of 6.69 m Ø slurry mixshield tunnel boring machine (TBM) assembly in a small diameter deep shaft including incorporation of a fully pressurized launch lock, preparations for saturation diving, surface support infrastructure and initial mining sequence.

This paper explores the capacity effects of a square steel plate welded at the ground surface on a driven open-ended steel pile (i.e. the plate would touch the ground surface after the pile achieves the required penetration). A series of strain-controlled, 1-g laboratory tests were undertaken on piles with and without a square steel plate attached. The piles were driven in dry, loosely packed, uniform sand. Two plates were used, one with a breadth equal to two times the diameter of the pile (2D) and the other with a breadth equal to three times the diameter of the piles (3D). A 20% increase in capacity was recorded for the 2D plate, and a 110% increase in capacity was recorded for the 3D plate when compared to the pile without an attached steel plate. The back-analysis of the results allowed the derivation of a new expression to calculate the capacity of bearing plates, which accounted for the effects of sands compaction and dilation. By extrapolating the findings of these tests to a hypothetical scenario, a model design problem was described where the length of a pile can be reduced by 20% to 60% (depending on the load) by using a plate attached to the pile. The results of this study can help designers to minimise penetration depth; thus, achieving a more economical and sustainable design.

Scouring of soil is the major concern forthe various hydraulic structures built in the flowing rivers since scouring impacts the bearing capacity of foundations. Hence, consideration of scouring in the design of foundations for hydraulic structures is crucial. Pile groups in bridges are subjected to combined vertical and horizontal loading due to self-weight, live loads, vehicular impacts, wind load, earth pressure, and current. Hence, an assessment of the combined bearing capacity of pile groups subjected to scour is essential for the safety of the structure. This paper aims to analyze the bearing capacity of pile group supporting the bridge under combined loading i.e., Vertical (V) and Horizontal (H) loading subjected to local scour. Three-dimensional finite element model (3D-FEM) of a 3 x 3 pile group embedded in homogeneous sandy soil is established in Abaqus (2018). Mohr-Coulomb plasticity model is used for the soil domain. The pile group is modelled as linear elastic. Finally, V-H yield envelopes are obtained with and without scour. The potential impact of different parameters, such as angle of attack, flow velocity, depth of flow, and different pile length-to-diameter ratios (L/D) and spacing-to-diameter ratios (S/D) of pile group on V-H yield envelopes is studied.

Oil-shale kerogen was processed into oil and oil products before the first oil well was completed by Drake in 1859. However, because of economic and other advantages, natural petroleum has been the principal source of liquid fuels and lubricants since 1859 and is a convenient root of many [organic] chemicals in common use today. In recent years the difference has narrowed between the cost of producing liquid fuels from well petroleum and other sources. This narrowing of cost difference has resulted both from the increased cost of finding new sources of petroleum in the United States and the experimental demonstration of lowered costs for synthetic liquid fuels by the Federal Bureau of Mines and by industry. Available petroleum resources of this country are being reduced and eventually may be inadequate to meet the demand. Alternate means of assuring an adequate supply of liquid fuels for this country include the development of processes for utilizing other carbonaceous materials such as oil shale and coal.

This bulletin, which discusses open-cut mining at the metal mines of the United States, is the last of a series of such papers by the Bureau of Mines describing the principal methods of mining.4 Open-cut mining is applicable to flat-lying mineral deposits relatively near the surface. Vein deposits seldom are amenable to this method, although outcrops of veins sometimes are worked as open pits. Most of the iron ore of the country is mined from open pits; according to the Minerals Yearbook, 67.4 percent was mined from open pits and 32.6 percent from underground mines in 1937. Open-cut mining is relatively new in the copper industry but yields more copper than any other method; in 1937 about 52 percent of the copper ore mined in the United States was taken from open pits. Lead-zinc ore has been produced from open pits in the Joplin (Mo.) district, but most of the deposits in this area, although flat-lying, are too deep to be mined economically by the open-cut method. In 1937 one company at Oronogo, Mo., was stripping overburden and mining mixed oxidized and sulfide ores by this method.
