BauxsolTM, prepared by treating bauxite refinery residues with Mg2+ and Ca2+, has an excellent ability to remove arsenic from acidic waters. The addition of BauxsolTM to sulphidic waste rock at the Gilt Edge Mine, South Dakota, reduced As concentrations in leachate water from 35 mg/L to < 0.005 mg/L; the concentrations have remained below 0.005 mg/L for the five years since the treatment was initiated. However, ordinary BauxsolTM does not effectively remove As from near-neutral water and it needs to be acid-treated or blended with small amounts of reagents, such as jarosite or ferrous sulphate, to increase the proportion of positively charged binding sites on the particles. The use of a jarosite/BauxsolTM blend can effectively treat ponded water, and As(V) concentrations can easily be reduced from over 1 mg/L to < 0.001 mg/L; As(III) has to be oxidised to As(V) for effective removal. Metal contaminants in the jarosite are trapped by the BauxsolTM and only very small amounts of the As, or other elements bound during treatment, are liberated using a TCLP leaching test. The exhausted treatment reagents meet the criteria for classification as an inert solid and do not need to be disposed of in a secure repository.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated the magnetic susceptibility of minerals as a function of mag-netic field strength to determine how it might affect the potential for high-field magnetic separation as an alternative to other separation technologies. Single-mineral concentrates were prepared from specimens from the same deposit to compare magnetic susceptibilities of minerals that occur together and from specimens from different deposits to compare magnetic susceptibilities of like minerals. A vibrating-sample magnetometer with a superconducting magnet capable of producing a magnetic field of 7.16 x 106 Aim (90 kOe) was used to measure the magnetic moment of the samples. The data were then converted to specific magnetic susceptibility data and plotted as a function of magnetic field strength. Cursory studies were also completed on the effects of iron content and oxidation roasts on magnetic susceptibility in high fields. The results showed that magnetic susceptibility is essentially constant in magnetic fields above those needed to saturate ferromagnetic constituents. Although magnetic susceptibility is influenced by iron content and by thermal treatment, the changes are not large enough to influence separations in fields above 1.59 x 106 Aim (20 kOe).

The past few years have produced a rash of demands for changes in America&apos;s way of doing things. From manufacturer to consumer, the rules have been changed. Some of the demands were needed and, when legislated to requirements, did manage some good for all concerned. Other demands made by zealots and taken up by regulatory agencies have forced costly changes on our way of life. No segment of industry has been exposed to more new rules and regulations than the deep coal mining industry in the United States. There is no denying that some good has evolved, but most mining men know that the effects have done more to reduce production and increase cost than they were ever intended to do.

WITH the great increase in the use of power-driven machinery in industry, and consequent large-scale operations, the hazards to which , workmen are exposed have become much more numerous than at the beginning of the century. This is especially noticeable in mining. In the past thirty years or so, improvements in methods of excavation and metallurgy have made possible the exploitation of deposits which would have failed to make ore in previous years. This improvement, together with the in-creased use of machinery, has facilitated the mining of tremendously greater tonnages with a marked decrease in unit cost of production. This &apos;speed up&apos; in mining creates numerous problems demanding close attention of operators and necessitates careful prep;tratory planning, as well as diligent supervision of actual operations. Underground openings increase in size so fast, and all phases of mining, mucking, and transportation proceed at such a rate, that a short period of reduced vigilance on the part of operators . results in disaster, both from the standpoint of safety and economies. Happily, the challenge of increased hazards has been successfully met by a general application of the slogan &apos;Safety First&apos;. Today, we have large manufacturing concerns devoted entirely to the development and production of safety equipment for the protection of workmen in various branches of industry. Machinery manufacturers, in co-operation with their mining customers, have included the best possible in foolproof devices in the manufacture of hoists, compressors, boilers, electric motors, and equipment of all kinds. Mining companies and private individuals spend thousands of dollars and devote a great deal of time to research with the single object of preventing accidents and combating miners? diseases. Governments throughout the world have written regulations into their statures for the protection of miners and operators. Staffs are appointed to enforce these laws and investigate accidents to ascertain means of preventing them for the future benefit of the industry.

"To minimise mine shaft maintenance over the long-term, some potash mine shaft sinking projects have required the provision of a continuous fully welded waterproof steel liner over a substantial depth to achieve zero water ingress. This brings many challenges, including the implementation of a bottom-up construction sequence incorporating extensive waterproof welding and how to ensure the integrity of the welded liner when subject to substantial temperature fluctuations that are likely to occur with a composite steel-concrete liner placed within an artificially frozen shaft excavation. This paper highlights the key challenges and discusses multiple mitigation measures including vertical shaft movement joints and a combined structural-thermal analysis approach. INTRODUCTION Whilst the application of combined steel and concrete shaft liners using a fully welded steel liner is not new and has been used in several previous projects, most notably at Lanigan (Storck, 1968 & Roesner, 1980), recently the need to provide a continuously welded steel waterproof liner for over 800 m length of shaft for a potash mine has been considered. The need for a fully continuous welded steel liner arises from the perceived benefits of providing a fully dry shaft environment to; increase the life expectancy of the shaft; reduce routine maintenance particularly combatting salt accretion and minimising wash down practices; and improve long-term ground stability by preventing salt dissolution. Whereas previous projects have employed discontinuous sections of steel liner, when a fully continuous liner is employed longitudinal shaft strains from thermal changes result in significant deformations that must be either explicitly accommodated or resisted. Note, these thermal vertical expansion forces are more than capable of lifting the shaft collar and head frame structures should they be fixed in place. Typically, shafts are designed to resist vertical forces (collar loads and self-weight) by creating mechanical interlock with the adjacent ground. In competent rock this occurs incrementally with the construction of the shaft liner, and occasional hitch/crib structures are constructed as intermediate foundations to guarantee the transfer of vertical forces at distinct horizons. Usually this means cribs are constructed at first rock head, above the station level, and at the sump, although sometimes additional cribs are formed when entering and exiting weak strata or when a change in shaft liner construction is required."

The Bureau of Mines has devised technology to recover cobalt, nickel, and byproduct copper from domestic lateritic material using an oxidative, ammoniacal ammonium sulfate leach. Nickel, cobalt, and copper were recovered by solvent extraction and electrowinning. To reduce the cost and complexity of cobalt recovery, an alternate method using lig-nite to extract Co3+ was investigated as reported herein. In the first 25 BV (bed volumes) of solution contacted with lignite, 97 wt pct of the Co3+ was extracted in & downflow column at pH 9.3. After 85 BV, the lignite was loaded to 1.5 wt pct Co3+ and further ex-traction was minimal. The lignite extracted cobaltic ammine complexes rather than cobalt ions and was nonselective as to other -metal cations and ammonium ions. Deleterious cations and 80 wt pct of the nonammine ammonium ions were removed prior to acid elution of the lignite. The removal of the ammines prior to elution to produce an ammonium-ion-freeCo3+ eluate was only partially successful. Thus Co3+ removal from ammoniacal solutions by lignite is technically difficult and economically unfeasible. It was also determined that reduction of Co3+ to Co2+ occurred during the extraction-elution process.

The Phelps Dodge Corporation&apos;s Morenci Concentrator includes facilities for coarse crushing, fine crushing, grinding, flotation, tailing, disposal, concentrate filtering, and drying. The Morenci Concentrator daily throughput is in excess of 60, 000 tons. The ore milled is mainly a medium-hard monzonite porphyry in which the principal sulfide minerals are chalcocite and pyrite. The ore is transported by rail from the Open Pit Mine to the primary crushing plant located at the concentrator site. Ore is side-dumped from 80¬ton railroad cars into a sixty-inch gyratory crusher. The ore is then conveyed to a. 12, 000 ton coarse ore storage bin. Fine crushing is accomplished by four parallel lines of conventionally stacked crushers in open circuit. Each unit consists of one seven-foot standard cone followed by two seven-foot shortheads. Ti% product of the fine crushing plant is distributed by two tripper cars across a fine ore storage bin. The crushed ore is then fed by variable speed belt feeders into thirty parallel, single stage, closed circuit grinding units. Each of the 30 grinding units consists of one 6&apos; x 23&apos; conditioning drum, one 10&apos; x 10&apos; ha l mill and two 54" duplex spiral classifiers as principal equipment. The dry ore is fed into the conditioning drum with water to dilute the ore to a slurry of approximately 78% solids by weight. An aqueous solution of ammonium sulfide is also added to the conditioning drum. The ammonium sulfide primarily acts as a sulfidizing agent. The ore slurry containing the naturally occurring sulfide copper minerals and the sulfidized copper minerals discharges into the feed scoop box of the ball mill, where milk of lime, collector and-.dilution water are added. With the goal of reducing injuries and fatalities related to haul truck accidents, this research investigates technologies and intervention strategies for improving worker training using a virtual environment (VE). Funded by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), this research specifically focuses on training workers in preshift inspections of haul trucks to avoid preventable defects from causing worker injuries and expensive equipment damage. Improved training in these inspections is expected to increase uptime. The VE developed to train workers for preshift inspections consists of three phases: the virtual tour, the virtual inspection and the shift simulation. The virtual tour introduces information necessary to conduct a preshift inspection by guiding the worker around a haul truck, identifying parts to be inspected and explaining defects to look for. The virtual inspection assesses retention as the worker navigates around a haul truck and identifies defects. During the shift simulation, the worker is shown a simulation of the work shift, which animates severe consequences of any overlooked defects to emphasise the importance of preshift inspections. To provide multiple training platforms, desktop and CAVEÖ versions of the training VE were created. Flux Studio was used to model the environment and to produce Virtual Reality Modelling Language (VRML) files for the desktop version. DIVERSE, an application programming interface, was then used to implement a more realistic version of the VE in a CAVEÖ, a room-sized visualisation system. Initial feedback from mining colleagues indicates that the training VE may replace normal classroom training for preshift inspections in the future. As opposed to PowerPoint presentations and instructional videos, the training VE provides better spatial understanding of the location of parts and incorporates interactive features to actively engage drivers in the learning process, which may result in better retention. Initial feedback also indicates that minor improvements can be made to the virtual tour and virtual inspection phases.

In order to analyze and control the transport of harmful trace-element impurities in various smelting processes, it is necessary to have fundamental information about the chemical thermodynamic properties of the pertinent condensed and vapor phases. This paper describes recent thermodynamic studies of the gaseous arsenic sulfides and of the activity of arsenic in a copper-iron sulfide matte phase. These studies were carried out by high temperature mass spectrometry and by effusion vaporization techniques, which permitted clear identification of the molecular species involved, a decided advantage in such complex systems. The nature of the results obtained and comparisons with previous interpretations will be described.

The Sunrise deposit is one of AustraliaÆs largest and most profitable gold deposits. It has consistently and spectacularly outperformed every resource model created. Currently over the life of the Sunrise pit there has been a 50 per cent under estimation of ounces mined. Without a solid basis for predicting the tonnes and grade or the spatial location of mineralisation, mine planning becomes problematic. Recently, through a better understanding of the mineralising processes the reconciliation of the resource model has improved to be in the order of ten per cent under on ounces mined. This paper will describe how the mine geologists at Placer Granny Smith have implemented the changes required to improve the resource model. Work began with the development of a three-dimensional lithological and structural model based on historical drilling and pit mapping. Continual updating of the geological model with grade control logging, assays and in pit face mapping, now allows for the on-going improvement of the resource model and the planning of mine development drilling.

Activation analysis for copper and manganese in 10 mg samples machined from aluminum-base diffusion couples has been used in the study of ternary diffusion in the Al-Cu-Mn system. The accuracy, economy and convenience of the method are considered to be very competitive with other methods for analysis of such small samples. Neutron-activated aluminum-zinc alloys in the range from 10 per cent to 100 per cent zinc have been equilibrated with a known volume and the vapors subsequently condensed and collected. The vapor pressures relative to pure zinc (the thermodynamic activities) have been determined at 550°C' by recording the relative count of /'-rays from zn65 in the collected samples. The method is a sensitive one, although subject to serious obstacles to experimental accuracy.

The profitability of individual ore blocks can be classed as clearly profitable, clearly not profitable, and those in between which are by nature quite sensitive to their major cost and revenue drivers. It is often the case that the most effort goes into the least profitable ore blocks to ensure that these will in fact not generate a loss. In these cases a cut-off grade policy is often not sufficiently live to separate individual sources given the volatility of financial markets and individual circumstances of some sources particularly in remnant operations such as Mount Isa MinesÆ Lead Mine. Standard sensitivity analysis can determine which factors stope profitability is most sensitive to. However, this does not usually indicate the likelihood of any input change, nor the combined effect of multiple inputs changing. The author attempted to modify the Lead Stream financial model that determines cash margin by inserting probability distribution functions and then using Monte Carlo simulations to determine the probability of any particular ore block making a profit. This effectively demonstrates the combined effect of varying a number of inputs simultaneously to provide a probability of making a profit. The limitations of this analysis lie in the accuracy that individual probability distributions can be specified. Attempts to generate valid functions from first principles have proved difficult for a number of reasons and these are discussed along with some practical alternatives.

"The Stockman base metals project is situated in State Forest in the alpine area of East Gippsland, Victoria, adjacent to a National Park and within the headwaters of a major Ramsar-listed wetland catchment and the Murray-Darling River system. Site topography is steep, and elevated (650 m – 1200 m above sea level), and subject to circa 1 m annual rainfall, with occasional winter snowfall. The project consists of two volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits to be mined by underground methods and treated in a 1.0 Mt/a central concentrator to produce copper and zinc concentrates for export over a ten year operational life. New resource projects are rare in Victoria. Recognising the sensitive setting, planning for the Stockman Project, which is now in the advanced permitting stage, has focused on balancing economic, environmental and social outcomes to ensure social licence to operate is secured and can be maintained. This has involved close attention to triple bottom line (TBL) risks and outcomes. Stockman has successfully gained State and Federal approvals via the Environmental Effects Statement process. The process of obtaining these approvals has required close attention to effective stakeholder involvement, and management of a lengthy and difficult approvals process, which is still to be finally concluded. This paper is a case study of the process of that permitting and the issues encountered to date. Key learnings from the experience have included: successful approvals require close attention to much more than just the project and its technical aspects and physical setting – effective stakeholder involvement and endorsement is critical the differing consultation requirements for local, regional and government stakeholders, to design and plan implementation of a project to meet TBL objectives, and to gain social licence to operate within the Victorian approvals process, the need for an effective lead government agency with policy authority dealing with material policy change requiring post-closure financial sureties estimating realistic permitting time and cost during the project evaluation phase. Previous studies have reported that inorganic electrolytes can enhance floatability of coal. The research has shown that the enhancement, if any, is highly dependent on changes in solution pH, type of electrolyte, and electrolyte concentration. The reasons for this are still not clear. In this study the floatability of coal particles in mono and divalent salt solutions was investigated. The zeta potential and hydrophobicity of the coal was measured experimentally, and a modified Hallimond tube was used to determine the floatability of coal particles by single bubbles, where the collision efficiency was equal to unity. The experimental information was used in conjunction with the Hogg-Healy-Fuerstenau equation to quantify the electrical double layer interaction. It was found that for low electrolyte concentration (less than 0.1 M) solutions the flotation recovery of coal particles was less than that for distilled water, and decreased with increase in concentration. Conversely, at electrolyte concentrations above 0.1 M, flotation recovery increased with increasing concentration. Both of these results are consistent with previous observations, but are inconsistent with expectations when considering the possible influence of electrical double layer interaction. A possible mechanism, based on the existence of the pre-existing submicron-sized gas bubbles, known as bubstons (i.e. bubbles stabilized by ions), present in water in close proximity to the hydrophobic coal surfaces is discussed in line with the early observation of flotation improvements by microbubbles “nucleating” on hydrophobic surfaces. In particular, the dependence of the bubble-particle attachment efficiency on electrolyte concentrations supports hypothesis on the salt-dependent and ion-specific existence of bubstons. However, a theoretical explanation of the transition salt concentration (at about 0.1M) is deficient at present. The existence of these submicrobubbles in close proximity to hydrophobic surfaces is not trivial. They can (as can individual gas molecules or other solutes) mediate and extend the range and magnitude of the attraction between hydrophobic macroscopic surfaces. These bubbstons may explain the curious phenomena of the socalled long-ranged hydrophobic attraction measured with the Surface Force Apparatus and Atomic Force Microscopy, and the slippage at hydrophobic surfaces. Finally, the coalescence of bubbstons affects the rupture of liquid films at a very large thickness (over 100 nm), observed, but unexpected, by flotation chemists.

The application of gob-side entry retaining (GER) in steeply pitching seam longwall mining with a hard roof has always been a difficult problem. Based on the simplified roof beam mechanical model, the traditional gob-side entry retaining by packing (GERP) roof structure evolution process and its problems with use in steeply pitching seams are analyzed. Therefore, based on the unique characteristics of the gangue rolling and accumulating in the steeply pitching seam, this contribution proposes an innovative method of gob-side entry retaining by roof cutting (GERRC) in steeply pitching seam and details its technical process. The roof structures of the GERRC and the GERP are compared. Taking the Chang Gouyu Coal Mine as a case study, field experiments were carried out. This research finds that the GERRC can both overcome the impact of rolling gangue on roadside support and make the rolling and stacking gangue become a roadside support. The roof structure of the GERRC is in a one-time statically indeterminate state, which is conducive to the stability of the roadway. In the field test, the total displacement of the roadway roof and floor is 97 mm, the supporting pressure of the serried single props is less than 28 MPa, and the props have no obvious bending phenomenon.

Room-and-pillar mining is a mining method used in the United States to extract coal from underground, and pillar recovery is widely practiced for maximizing coal recovery and mining economics. Under certain conditions, room-and-pillar mining can create high stresses in coal pillars resulting in a coal outburst. These outbursts represent one of the more severe safety hazards in underground coal mines, potentially causing injuries and fatalities. Over the past ten years, coal outbursts have resulted in three fatalities in U.S. room-and-pillar mines. Though coal outbursts generally occur under deep cover, they are more likely to occur during pillar recovery and under multiple-seam mining conditions. Coal outbursts are generally associated with strong roof and floor and heavy loading of coal pillars, but it is difficult to predict whether, where, and when they will occur. In this respect, risk management provides a proactive tool to prevent coal outbursts in room-and-pillar mining by identifying mining areas with high risk of outburst and mitigating the risk accordingly.

Although mining companies have made broad corporate-level commitments to adopt sustainability, there continue to be problems when attempts are made to adopt higher-level sustainability aspirations and translate them into appropriate targets and methods at the more-specific operational level. The integration of sustainability principles into minerals processing operational decision-making processes has unique challenges that are not addressed adequately by current tools and methodologies, yet impacts from operational decisions can have longer-term effects realised at closure and rehabilitation.This paper describes a proposed methodology to achieve the integration of sustainability at the operational level through a systematic and rigorous process of identifying and qualifying sustainability issues and opportunities in an operation. The methodology, starting from a sustainability point of view rather than an operational one, guides the identification of process issues and opportunities by examining the operation, unit-by-unit, similar to a Hazard and Operability (HAZOP) process. Each issue or opportunity is qualified according to its measurability, scopes of impact and consequences so that it may be understood fully and the correct engineering problems are formed. Through improved decision-making to account for broader sustainability factors, operations can better address environmental and social expectations and pressures (both corporate and community, as well as immediate and in the longer-term), whilst still delivering on operational and business goals.The methodology has been tested with two case studies at minerals processing operations. At one site, the methodology identified a dust issue which had considerable business risks (loss of valuable product) compared to conventional engineering analysis processes. The other site also benefited from using the methodology as an opportunity to improve the operation of the milling and flotation circuits was identified. The opportunity not only showed a potential to improve operational efficiency, but also potential improvements in water and energy efficiency and a resulting increased resilience against water and energy supply risks. It was important to utilise the holistic approach of the methodology in the identification of opportunities at this site; the goals of the operation showed a strong coupling between water and energy issues which would be difficult to overcome using the operationÆs current organisational model, which deals with such issues separately of each other.CITATION:Tuazon, D, Corder, G D, Powell, M and Ziemski, M, 2012. Firm control of the production rate was maintained under State and Federal laws and aided by the&apos; Interstate Compact. During the first ten months," crude oil prices were stable, except for a slight increase early in the year. Toward the end of the year, uncertainty of price structure be-came evident and a sharp reduction in allowable production was under way. Exploration for new pools and development of .pools already discovered continued active throughout the year. Production control agencies in Texas, and to a less extent in New Mexico and Louisiana, appear to have had increasing difficulty in holding crude oil output to allowable limits. The situation elsewhere is less well known but probably the same condition exists in other important producing States whether control is by State commissions or by unofficial bodies.

PHOSPHATE ROCK is a low- priced commodity. This fact has influenced the choice of mining and beneficiating methods to a greater degree, perhaps, than in most other low-grade mining operations. The fact that many yards of everburden and matrix must be stripped and mined per ton of salable "rock" produced and sold has necessitated he development of relatively simple btneficiating plants having high capacity and low capital and operating costs. The law of diminishing returns must always be reckoned with in phosphate mining and washing, and often recovery must be sacrificed in favor of costs in order to achieve the highest over-all economic efficiency. The phosphate-bearing formation, known as "matrix," is composed of (1) phosphate pebbles, which are somewhat rounded in shape and which vary in size from 1-in, to micron sizes, (2) rounded quartz grains usually smaller than 10 mesh, and (3) clay, of varying "stiffness," which is the binder of the matrix. The phosphate pebbles vary in hardness. Their color, which varies from white to black, is not a reliable indicator of the Bone Phosphate of Lime (B.P.L.) content of the

SCRIPTURE, statistics and imagination all were drawn upon by the speakers who acclaimed Daniel C. Jackling as recipient of the William Lawrence Saunders Gold Medal for 1930. The award was made at a special dinner at the Ritz-Carlton, in New York, on Oct. 31. Lafayette Hanchett, old friend and associate, said that if it were his task to compress the life story of Daniel Jackling into a single sentence, he could find noth¬ing so appropriate as these words from the 22nd Chapter of Proverbs, "See&apos;st thou a man diligent in his business, he shall stand before Kings." Mr. Jackling&apos;s diligence, according to the speaker, his love for his task, have been outstanding in his career. W. S. Boyd, now ranking official in the Jackling organization, cited amazing statistics as to the quantity of copper supplied to industry by the four "porphyry". coppers that are under Mr. Jackling&apos;s immediate direc¬tion, as well as by those that, in a sense, owe their existence to the pioneer work at Utah Copper. In the aggregate- 16,000,000,000 lb. of copper having an approximate value of $2,700,000,000 have been produced from disseminated ores since 1905; and of this total 42 per cent came from Utah and the Nevada group. Newcomb Carlton, president of the Western Union Telegraph Co., long an admirer of Mr. Jackling, adroitly drew a picture of a similar occasion in some &apos;foreign country.
