Destructive Thermal Technology (DTT) is used in the management of various waste streams. DTT includes Destructive Distillation, Pyrolysis and Classical Incineration. Recent work has more clearly defined the differences in these technologies based upon a more rigorous thermochemical approach. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has chosen Classical Incineration as the Best Developed Available Technology (BDAT) for the management of hazardous organic wastes. Municipal Solid Wastes (MSW) and Sewage Sludges (SS) are also managed using Classical Incineration. Three environmental problems plague the use of Classical Incineration. Destructive Distillation, on the other hand, avoids these problems. It is an environmentally benign DTT for managing a wide variety of organic waste streams, including hazardous wastes. Thermochemical analysis of the available data on the performance of three types of DTT will be discussed.

"In 2006, a Canadian steel maker embarked on an ambitious initiative to become “Best in Class in Energy Management”. This initiative provides the framework for this paper, with some augmentation from other energy management projects carried out by Hatch. The initiative focused on identifying energy/GHG management improvements leading to low-cost implementation of energy savings or GHG emission reduction. The key components of the approach were:• Review site energy management practices and benchmark internationally.• Review best technical practices and benchmark against public energy intensity data.• Conducted a site-wide Energy Assessment and physical review of operating areas.• Facilitation of on site-workshops with staff to prioritize savings opportunities, as well as identify and remove implementation barriers.• Development of an Energy Management Action Plan for implementation of improvements.Most organizations can produce, with relative ease, a list of ideas for saving energy, implementing them is the challenge. This paper addresses these issues as well as the profitability of the energy efficiency improvements and the consequences for GHG emissions.IntroductionWhen one of the authors was an undergraduate engineering student at the University of Cape Town in South Africa, the technical drawing instructor made a statement that was both humorous, and mildly profound. He claimed that the most successful engineer is one who is both lazy and diligent. Lazy, in the sense that the engineer is constantly on the lookout for an easier, more efficient, way to do something. Diligent, in the sense that the engineer will work tirelessly to come up with a good technical solution for the easier way. This paper, somewhat of an anomaly in a compilation of technical proceedings, hopes to break the mould a little, and to show a “lazy-diligent” way of reducing the carbon emissions from an industrial facility, using a steel plant as an example."

The high pressure acid leaching of laterite was modelled and simulated using a combination of two commercially available software packages, namely Aspen Plus 11.1 and the OLI Stream Analyzer. New kinetic parameters for the acid-controlled metal dissolution and precipitation reactions at temperature were first determined from previous experimental data on the leaching of limonite. A grain model with cylindrical pellets was used to model the solid-liquid dissolution reactions. Precipitation reactions were modeled via aqueous equilibrium chemistry. A dedicated thermodynamic database previously developed at the University of Toronto was used in conjunction with the OLI software to model the solution chemistry and calculate the concentration of hydrogen ions in solution at the leaching temperature. Mass balances were handled by Aspen Plus. The simulation gave good predictions of nickel dissolution under industrial and laboratory conditions, for the dissolution of limonite and limonite/saprolite blends. Computational

Minerals in coals cause operational problems in various coal utilization technology as well as act as diluents towards its heat value. Indian coals contain higher percentage of mineral matter compared to foreign coals due to its formation through drift origin. Efficient utilization of high ash coal in environment friendly manner is the driving force for the development of clean coal technology. Coal gasification offers practical means meeting stringent environment controlled parameters for producing power, chemicals, liquid fuels and clean energy on a single platform. It is well accepted that gasification technology has sufficient potential for sustainable development of clean coal technology. Gasification reactivity depends on the coal properties and operational parameters as well as minerals present in coal. Minerals not only create operational problems but on the other side also catalyze the gasification and combustion reaction. Therefore to understand the effect of minerals on the gasification reactivity, present paper proposes to study the variation of gasification reactivity with various gravity cuts such as, 1.4-1.5; 1.6-1.7; and 1.8-1.9 of a selected coal. Gasification reactivity has been studied by thermo gravimetric analyzer (TGA) using CO2 as gasifying agent. Surface properties such as, true density, apparent density, porosity, surface area of different gravity cut samples have also been measured to find out the effect of gravity separation on gasification reactivity. "In response to an increasing demand of anchored structures for underground space and transportation infrastructure in China, an innovative underreamed ground anchorage system was created. The novel anchorage system has provided more efficient functions with higher capacity at lower cost, because of the enlarged cylindrical body (known as ECB) sealed in capsule at bottom of anchorage. This paper presents the detailed structure of innovative anchorage system and its special features. To investigate the bearing mechanism of new anchorage, we evaluate its performance and failure mode based on the experimental results, and also indicate its strain-hardening load-displacement relationship. Unlike the shaft anchorages, it is identified no overall failure to be found in soil surrounding the underreamed anchorage. More importantly, the anchorage capacity is governed by the base resistance, which takes more than 80% of total pullout capacity resulting from the contribution of ECB. Finally a case history of anti-floating project introduces the new combined construction approach and procedure, which has provided the contribution to the quality control and cost efficiency.INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUNDThe construction boom over two decades in China has resulted in an increasing demand for underground space and slope stability. The infrastructures market requires the more efficient anchorage systems for retaining structures, resisting uplift forces and slope protection. The major concern focuses on gaining higher capacity and lower cost resulted from perfecting anchorage systems. There are three main anchorage systems designed to achieve the above objectives: ? single bore multiple anchorage system (Barley 1997), ? regroutable anchorage system (Smoltczyk 1991), ? underreamed anchorage systems (Xanthakos 1991). Generally, the concept ? comparing with the other two, can be more competitive due to its distinct advantages. To improve the performance and durability of ground anchorages under the complex geological conditions and diversified engineering requirements, a number of different underreamed anchorage technologies had been used, which included cone - shape anchorage described by Liao, Wu and Shu (1997) in Taiwan, Soilex anchorage developed in Sweden (Massarsch et al. 1997), Soletanche anchorage proposed in France, blasting anchorage used in Czechoslovakia (Hobst and Zajic 1986), jet-grouting anchorage innovated in Europe (Anon 1988), as well as deep mixing anchorage created in Japan (Cheng et al. 2000).The underreamed anchorage systems have the remarkable advantages compared to the shaft anchorage system. However, there are also some weaknesses inherent in the underreamed systems. For instance, the mechanical underreamed anchorage is unsuitable in sand or waterbearing ground, because the enlarged hole is easy to collapse, and it is hard to ensure the quality of anchorages. On the other hand, relying on the blasting in deep hole, the geometrical space and dimension of enlarged hole is uncontrollable, meanwhile, the continuous blasting operations may easily cause the serious ground deformation and the negative effects to the completed anchorages."

ONE Of the most significant developments in the iron industry in recent years has been the discovery and opening of enormous reserves of low-grade ore in eastern and northeastern Cuba. The two principal fields are the Mayari and the Moa, situated on Nipe bay, in the Province of Oriente. A less well-known district of the same type is that of Baracoa, at the east of the island, and another is in Camaguey province in central Cuba. In the comprehensive estimates of the iron-ore reserves of the world, published during the summer of 1910 by the International Geological Congress in Sweden,' these Cuban deposits are estimated at about 2,000,000,000 tons. Certain it is that the reserve is a large one. The Spanish-American Iron Co., the Juragua Iron Co. (Bethlehem Steel Co.), the U. S. Steel Corporation, and others have been active in this exploration.. The Spanish-American Iron Co. has established a port for the handling of these ores at Felton, has built a railway 16 miles to the ore-fields, and has opened up deposits for steam-shovel mining. Its expenditures have reached an aggregate of about $6,000,000 in preparation for the handling of these ores. Shipment of the ore to Sparrow's Point, Md., has begun and may be expected to rise to a considerable amount in the near future. The ore reaches this point at a cost per unit of iron considerably lower than Lake Superior ores, and the presence of a low percentage of nickel gives a desirable steel. It is not the purpose of this article to consider these ores from a commercial stand-point, but rather to discuss their-origin. THE motive for merging or consolidation today is conspicuously different from that actuating business men in the late eighties and early nine- ties. Then they combined to secure added productive capacity and to monopolize their respective industries with a view to exploiting the consumer. So flagrant were some of these cases that they brought about their own correctives via retaliation on the part of the public and the subsequent restrictive legislation and legal curbs. The objective of the present-day merger, writes W. R. Hill in Printers' Ink, December, 1927, is summarized as follows : "In the golden days when an industry was being cut to pieces, the prevailing cure was to combine. The reason for such trusts was to strangle competition and by creating a monopoly, dominate the market, raise prices, regardless of economic business methods, and simply force larger profits.

As the resources sector becomes tougher with rising costs and cyclical metal prices, mining companies need to continue to reduce their costs and do more with less. Many new resource projects fail to come in under or on budget based on Feasibility Studies. Particularly, capital expenditure (CAPEX) proves difficult to achieve for resource projects. A number of resource projects have failed because of aggressive plant CAPEX cost cutting resulting in projects with no surge capacity and are unable to achieve design throughput. In addition, the plants are not operable because of the omissions. In recent times many businesses have also experienced the "costs" of simply implementing aggressive operating "cost cutting” measures as a strategy for solving business performance problems. This paper looks at technology driven, employment related, luxury cuts, department cuts and restructuring cuts. In the past companies used an incremental approach based on the use of past budget information as an integral part of the budget construction process going forward. The use of performance reports and Management Information Systems (MIS) is examined along with the role of continuous improvement in achieving sensible cost cutting.

"A major part of Melbourne’s central business district is underlain by a very soft silty clay deposit known as Coode Island Silt (CIS). Due to the low strength of CIS, most construction in the region is based on pile foundation systems. Traditionally, the design of pile foundations is mostly based on empirical and analytical methods. However, numerical methods such as Finite Element Methods (FEM) can be utilised for more accurate estimation of the bearing capacity and deformation of pile foundation systems, especially in complex loading scenarios. Unfortunately, no systematic effort is made yet to calibrate a realistic nonlinear constitutive model to describe the geomechanical behaviour of CIS in a numerically based solution. Among the nonlinear constitutive models, the Hardening Soil (HS) model is an advanced hyperbolic model which accounts for the nonlinearity of stress-strain relationship as well as the stress dependency of the soil stiffness. In this study, the HS model is calibrated based on laboratory tests performed on CIS. Also, to validate the accuracy of the calibration, the wellknown cavity expansion theory is employed to model the CPT cone tip resistance (qc) in CIS, and results are compared against the measured CPT qc profile at the field.INTRODUCTIONA large percentage of world’s coastal areas are covered with soft marine clay deposits. Having very low shear strength and high compressibility, the alluvial deposits are known as one of the most problematic soil layers for the design and construction of infrastructure facilities. A major part of Melbourne’s central business district is underlain by a very soft silty clay deposit known as Coode Island Silt (CIS). Basically, there are two main solutions for construction in such weak soil conditions. One is the use of pile foundations transferring the applied load to deeper and stronger soil layers, and the second one is to employ ground improvement techniques such as using deep soil mixing columns to improve the bearing capacity of the soil. In both cases, a practical geotechnical design should incorporate both stability analysis and deformation analysis to achieve a cost-effective and reliable solution. Most of the classic solutions for stability analyses such as limit equilibrium analysis disregard the stress-strain relationship of the soil for the sake of the simplicity (Chen, 2007; Sokoloviskii, 1965). In a similar simple approach, most of the past studies of deformation analysis have been established on the basis of linear elasticity. However, it is well recognised that the soil stress-strain behaviour is highly nonlinear even at very small strains (Burland, 1989). Hence, for a precise deformation analysis of the foundation of important geotechnical structures, the application of advanced nonlinear constitutive models is extremely beneficial. Precise deformation analysis is essential as geotechnical designers have to predict the displacement of geotechnical structure and the adjacent soil as well as the induced displacement and forces to adjacent structures. This issue is more highlighted recently in the analysis, and design of highly important infrastructures as geotechnical engineers are facing new challenges in the analysis and design of infrastructures in congested areas. Rapid population growth, especially in the major cities all around the world necessitates the design and construction of more integrated infrastructure facilities. Consequently, geotechnical engineers should employ more advanced design approaches to address the new challenges in geotechnical engineering practice. Complicated geometries, different loading scenarios and the application of nonlinear deformation models which is believed to be essential for a precise deformation analysis, necessitate the application of numerical methods to satisfy most of the design requirements."

The Richmond San Rafael Bridge (Figure 1) is a 4.3 mile long major toll bridge span across northern San Francisco Bay. Tutor-Saliba/Koch/Tidewater (TSKT) conducted a comprehensive seismic retrofit, which was at the time Caltrans? largest-ever construction contract at $484 million. The robust foundation retrofit design of 11 bridge piers included the installation of 26 new, large diameter (126 to 162 inch OD, wall thickness 1.5 to 2.25 inches) CIDH and CISS piles, with steel pipe piles installed to tip elevations of Elev. ?140 to -220 ft, in water depths up to 70 feet. The open-ended steel pipe piles had initial sections ranging from 71 to 172 feet long, with full lengths that extended to the bay bottom and then through 100 to 130 feet of marine sediments to top of bedrock. The marine soils of most interest consisted mainly of soft to firm Young Bay Mud (YBM), a silty, moderately-sensitive clay common to SF Bay. A key constructability issue was the prediction of pipe piles ?running? under self weight (198 to 625 kips in air) and pile driving hammer weight (IHC S-500 with total assembly weight of 322 kips). The term "pile running" is used to describe the penetration of the pile into the soil due to the self-weight of the pile only. This issue was critical because 1) there was limited head room under the bridge deck, and 2) if piles run too deep, the pile splicing on several piles would be problematic (the lowest desirable pile top elevation after running was +10 ft). While running measurements are sometimes made during marine/nearshore construction, there is little published data on predicted vs. actual running. This paper discusses the running prediction under self weight for 26 piles, and the methodology used in developing the predictions, which ranged from 15 to 94 ft of penetration below mudline. Pile running was recorded and compared with predicted values. The prediction methodology was quite good, and no significant constructability problems were encountered. The authors ?tweaked? the model to provide a slightly improved prediction method. The paper presents the model, predictions, observations, and discusses important lessons learned.

In metallurgical applications, coal fulfills dual roles as a chemical feed stock and as a fuel source. These applications range from cokemaking, ironrnaking (including pulverized coal injection), foundry, basic oxygen furnace / electric arc furnace coal additions, direct ironrnaking, Corex, and the futuristic direct steelmaking. In all steelmaking related processes, chemical reactions are simultaneously temperature and chemical dependent. Therefore, coals used in these processes must consistently comply with specific quality parameters in order to promote efficient operations. This paper limits discussion of Metallurgical Coal Quality to cokemaking and ironmaking applications. Its purpose is to present the customer's perspective on the control of critical coal and coke properties.

The development of transportation systems for mined materials has historically been characterized by steadily increasing sizes in basic hauling units. This is especially true for open pit mines for which success is dependent upon the economical transportation of vast quantities of material. The depletion of high grade ore reserves has mandated a tremendous increase in the size and complexity of the ore haulage systems necessary for open pit mines, These increased demands were served by rail haulage systems in the early large open pit copper mines while later developed properties opted for the flexibility and lower initial costs of truck haulage. Now, we find the trucks being displaced as large overland belt conveyors tackle the problem of handling these ever larger quantities of low-grade ores with accompanying overburden ratios that can run as high as 10:1 or even 15:1. The basic development of large conveyors with shiftable sections and modular belts has generally taken place overseas, during the last few decades. The coal fields of central Europe proved an ideal testing ground for conveyor innovation because the low density and natural friability of the material created an ideal medium for transporting by belt conveyor. Now these proven ideas are being considered for and implemented into both the soft and hard rock mining industries of the United States.

"Syncrude Canada Ltd. operates one of the largest surface mines in the world. The mining operation has two distinct phases: (1) the removal of the overburden, utilizing trucks and shovels; and (2) the mining of oilsand with drag lines and bucketwheels. Both phases combined move approximately 330 000 BCM per day.In support of current production demands and to provide a contingent oi/sand source, Syncrude has developed an Auxiliary Production System (APS) supported by the truck and shovel operation. This system utilizes oilsand sources within the existing mine area on an as-needed basis.The recent increased capabilities of the processing plant to handle a larger volume of oilsand has increased the reliance of the APS system. To facilitate the increased capacity, an auxiliary mine was developed external to the Base Mine operation with a production capacity of4.7 MBCM of oilsand per year.Development of the Northwest Auxiliary Pit began in January 1990, with the first cubic metre of oilsand taken to the plant in June, 1990. The Auxiliary Pit, as designed, has a total ore reserve of 68 MBCM of oi/sand."

Most cyclic plasticity models used in multiaxial fatigue life predictions are based on a concept of a yield surface, which divides the elastic and plastic domains. Plastic straining occurs when the stress state reaches the surface and tries to move outward. Subsequent plastic straining causes the stress state to remain on the yield surface, which will translate to prevent the stress point from moving outside it according to a kinematic hardening rule that models the Bauschinger effect. The accurate modeling of the yield surface shape is fundamental to predict stress-strain relations. In this work, the main yield surface equations for isotropic materials are compared. Even though most materials can be modeled using Mises and Tresca surfaces, other need to consider the effect on the yield strength of the hydrostatic stress or the normal stress acting on a critical plane. It is shown that pressure-sensitive models originally devised for concrete can be applied to predict yielding in some materials, and even fatigue life for metallic structures with short cracks.

The thermomechanical response of thermally-activated (TA) piles under monotonic thermal loads is quite well understood and the remaining uncertainties relate to the effect of long-term, cyclic loading of individual TA piles and pile groups. Recent studies undertaken by the authors have provided insights into the behaviour of TA pile foundations undergoing cyclic thermal loading. Despite their simplicity, the analyses show that key aspects of the observed response of piles in sand, under cyclic thermal loading can be reproduced, providing confidence in the outcomes of the analyses. The studies examined isolated piles and pile groups, and concluded that irrecoverable thermally-induced settlement may be mitigated through the choice of an appropriate margin of safety on the pile shaft resistance under service mechanical load conditions, and the maximum thermal stress can also be readily estimated. This paper consolidates these works and provides guidance regarding the safe geotechnical and structural design of the piles, then looks towards the remaining issues around the safe provision of thermally-activated pile foundations.

A new framework that collates and interprets pre-existing data to assess vulnerability and ultimately plan to avoid or minimise flood-related risk to infrastructure, people, downtime, environment and revenue has been developed. The æClimate Related Adaptation from Terrain Evaluation ResultsÆ (CRATER) method tested at a coal mine in Queensland, provides semi-quantitative information to assist decision makers when designating investment for minimising vulnerability of mining operations to climate. Here we present the processes involved in this three-step approach that uses pre-existing spatial data of the mine site and local knowledge to build a set of visual tools to assist decision-making. The first step of the process is performing multi-criteria evaluation (MCE) within a geographic information system (GIS) on ranked natural conditions at the mine, such as elevation, slope, drainage, soil and vegetation, which is performed to identify critical flood areas. Secondly, a fault-tree analysis identifies how impact can occur and what options there are for impact reduction. Finally, a resource assessment of the mineÆs capacity to adapt reduces the adaptation options to those most suited to the mine. The results are confidential, but for the purpose of introducing the methodology, we present simplified results, particularly of steps 2 and 3. CRATER can also be used for future æwhat-ifÆ flooding scenarios to identify the most suitable locations for roads, buildings or other critical infrastructure. The methodology is transferable to any mine, series of mines or locations along the mining value chain that have sufficient data, providing a practical decision-making tool to identify æno-regretsÆ actions that not only could reduce downtime after or during an event, but in some cases may enhance production between extreme events. It is my great pleasure as mayor of the city of Amsterdam to welcome you today to Amsterdam, and to the 10th International Conference on Piling and Deep Foundations. The history of Amsterdam has been connected intimately with your professions of geo-engineering and geotechnology, since its very first days. It is good to be aware that you are part of a very old tradition. The knowledge that we need today to build and renew the city has been gathered over a century long process so that we fortunately can stand on the shoulders of the giants before us. During the centuries people living in this part of the Netherlands have always struggled against the water. The same waters that brought the opportunity for a seafaring country to discover the world and to build an empire in the 17th century were a threat to the low lying Netherlands.
