The high temperature hydrochloric acid leaching of titanium slag in the QIT upgraded slag process (UGS) creates a harsh environment for materials of construction. Because of their excellent chemical and heat resistance, furan mortars are a key component in the lining system of the UGS pressure leach reactors. Similar products coming from different manufacturers have however shown unequal performances in service. In some cases, cracking of the brick lining has occurred during curing of the mortar. This study was initiated to investigate the impact of the curing conditions on the properties of carbon filled furan mortars. Laboratory tests were conducted to assess the effects of temperature and exposure to water and HCl solutions on mortar shrinkage and mechanical properties (tensile, compressive and bond strength). Three commercial furan mortars that have been used in the UGS leach reactors were thus characterized. Mortar properties were found to vary significantly among the products tested. Moreover, the curing conditions were shown to have a significant impact on mortar shrinkage and mechanical strength. The experimental findings provide explanations for the unequal performances of the mortars in service and for the problems of brick lining cracking that occurred in the UGS leach reactors. This study demonstrates that excessive mortar shrinkage compromises the integrity of a brick lining system.

The creation of an accurate and precise enough database requires the collection of many representative samples, subsampling and assaying them without destroying their integrity. The selection and implementation of sampling protocols often lead to severe difficulties, making the unaware practitioner vulnerable to massive exploration, feasibility and operating failures. Therefore, there is no substitute for a good understanding of the Theory of Sampling (TOS). Either because of ignorance, or because of short-term economic reasons, failure to comply with many stringent conditions can be devastating for the validity of a feasibility study, leading to false evaluations, to the abandonment of a viable property, or to the exploitation of one that is not profitable. All these failures have something in common: insufficient duplicate sampling, subsampling and assaying were performed; very important, preliminary heterogeneity tests were never performed; for short-term economic reasons, poor sampling and subsampling protocols were selected, second-class sampling systems and weightometers were installed and poor preventive maintenance and cleaning were implemented;and sampling experts were called only when the project was obviously in trouble. The conclusion is clear: in due time, iterative auditing of sampling practices is an insurance policy against massive financial losses for the company involved. A complete, comprehensive 100 point checklist of sampling Quality Assurance and Quality Control is provided, so critically important details to ensure success are not forgotten.

The Concentrator 1 plant at Cadia transitioned from Cadia Hill open pit to the Cadia East block cave ore body in 2013. As a result of this change, major plant upgrades were required to achieve the desired throughput while treating more competent ore. The 40-foot (40’) SAG mill now receives a feed of predominantly high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) product with a minor component of secondary crushed ore at a combined F80 of 17 mm. The significant reduction in feed size to the SAG mill has markedly changed the operating characteristics of the mill, which has been extensively studied since commissioning in 1998.This paper examines the operation of the 40’ SAG mill in its new configuration in the Concentrator 1 circuit. Operational stability is highlighted as a significant factor in delivering mill performance, which has been achieved through several key improvement projects utilising a theory of constraints framework. Five years of successful project implementation has progressively lifted the maximum processing rate of Concentrator 1 from the design estimate of 2455 t/h to above 3000 t/h. "Under the term ""paleogeomorphology"" are grouped together all geo-morphological phenomena which are recognizable in subsurface geology. Since geomorphology is the science of the earth's relief features, paleogeomorphology is the science of buried relief features. Such features are of importance to the petroleum geologist whenever they lead to the trapping of hydrocarbons. In areas where these features abound -and western Canada certainly is such an area -pale-ogeomorphology ranks in importance with stratigraphy and structural geology as a hydrocarbon-finding tool. Hydrocarbons may be trapped either directly or indirectly due to paleogeomorphological processes. Both types of traps may occur either below the morphological surface or above (against) it. Several examples of types of paleogeomorphological traps are given. A new classification of geomorphological .features is proposed, with a subdivision into two main groups: constructive and destructive geomorphic processes. Of the many geomorphic classifications, some are of greater interest to the petroleum geologist in western -Canada than others. In the present paper the morphology of reefs and of buried erosional land forms are discussed in greater detail. In dealing with the reefs of the Devonian Leduc formation in Alberta, it is found that several groups of reefs can be distinguished and that each group presents a separate set of morphological characteristics. The effects of erosion and weathering are exemplified mostly in the Devonian, Mississippian and Jurassic of Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Hydrocarbon traps occur below the highs on the erosional surface as well as in sands laid down in the lows of that surface. The rules which govern the formation of ancient landscape forms are worked out, using an area in southeastern Saskatchewan as an example."

The increasing magnitude of our nation's pollution problems seems to stem from two main factors: urbanization and technical advance. In 1920, less than half the country's 106 million people lived in cities. Forty years later, the urban population accounted for 70 percent of the nation's 179 million. It is predicted that by the end of the century, 95 percent of the U. S. population, estimated at 280 million, will live in urban areas. As these people live increasingly in city concentrations, their residues also concentrate. With technological advances to support the increasing population, the variety and quantity of goods that we use also increases. New materials and processes result in increases in pollutants, some of them new. The harmfulness of these pollutants is sometimes known, but sometimes only suspected. One pollutant of concern at the present time is sulfur dioxide, the product of combustion of sulfur-containing fuels. Research on processes to remove sulfur oxides from flue gas has been in progress for many years. Pioneers in this field were the British who, in the early 1930's, installed a full-scale flue gas scrubbing unit on a 120 MW boiler using alkaline water from a Thames estuary plus chalk. Since that time, various methods have been studied by many investigators. Federal laws covering air pollution started with the 1955 Air Pollution Control Act. With the advent of the Air Quality Act of 1967, and subsequent publishing of criteria and available technology for control of sulfur oxides in January 1969, the clamor for information on commercially available control techniques to remove sulfur from fossil fuels has rapidly increased. Although many state-of-the-art papers have deluged the literature during the past several years, the research going on in the area of sulfur oxides control is of such importance that periodic reviews are justified. It is the purpose of this paper, therefore, to again review the state-of-the-art, but this time from the stand-point of what is immediately commercially available

Modern steelmaking is based on direct use of oxygen in high intensity batch reactors. A totally new approach is proposed in this paper, based on the view that pursuit of high intensity is unlikely to lead to successful coal-based continuous steelmaking. By substituting carbon dioxide and water vapor as the oxidants rather than using oxygen directly, the intensity is greatly reduced. Accordingly, subsurface formation of carbon monoxide bubbles can be avoided by careful manipulation of the three participating rate processes, gaseous diffusion, interfacial chemical kinetics and liquid phase mass transfer. Steelmaking can then be carried out without explosive ejection of molten droplets and the generation of micro-spray but rather in a controlled and fume less fashion. The vital component is the introduction of generic melt circulation technology. Three melt circulation loops in series are envisaged. Starting with a composite feed of iron ore fines, pulverized coal and lime flux, a metallized solid raft floating on molten iron is propelled out of the ironmaking loop onto the first of two downstream steelmaking loops. In the first, a liquid slag is formed, primary decarburization is undertaken not with oxygen but rather with CO2 and H2O and the melt is desulfurized. The semi-product stream enters the third melt circulation loop, where open-channel decarburization is effected along with dephosphorization to yield a low carbon steel product. Alternatively, the melt leaves the last loop to irrigate a packed tower countercurrent to argon at around 100 mbar to continuously produce ultra-low carbon (ULC) steel.

IN 1902, a famous Canadian geologist made the following statement : ?'From what we know row of the iron-ore fields of the Province, we may feel that Ontario is assured of a great future as an iron-ore producing country. Judging from the extent of the territory over which the newly discovered ranges have been found, Ontario should in the not far distant future take her place as one of the chief iron producers in the world". In 1905, an official of the Department of Mines said: "In ten years Canada will have b:ecome a great metallurgical country. You will see an iron industry in this Dominion larger than in any country in the world. Canada will yet furnish the world with its iron supply. It will be the same with iron as with wheat. A decade from now Canada will outstrip all other countries in wheat growing. The production of iron at a cheaper rate than it can be made elsewhere will cause Canada to take a similar position as far as iron is concerned". In 1924, a former President of the Institute, in arguing his claim for inconceivable mineral wealth in this country, stated as a "certainty" that iron-ore deposits on the scale of the ones in Minnesota would be found "again and again" in the Canadian Precambrian. In 1930, a Minister of Mines announced that "The country surrounding Churchill holds large deposits of valuable iron and coal", and he stated that, at that place, 'We will have an industry in iron that will compare with Pittsburgh". These statements are definite promises, just as definite and important as the statement "I promise to pay" on a note, and they are not fulfilled by casually stating, as is the habit, that someday we will work our low-grade iron ores. Nor are they fulfilled by stating, as is often done, "Oh, So-and-So did not mean that ' . Due to their importance and to the prominent positions held by the men who made these statements, they were widely circulated throughout Canada. They were taken at their face value, and on the strength of them and many more of the same kind in regard to our other resources we have planned and built, at huge expense, provinces, governments, civil services, railways, and other equipment. The reserves that were to justify these expenditures have not appeared. There has not been a ton of iron ore mined in Canada for many years, and important commercial reserves are unknown. We have built the mill, but adequate ore is lacking.

"Water evaluation and management during mining exploration and operational activities is crucial to minimise direct and indirect operational costs and also in delivering mining companies the less tangible, but equally critical æsocial license to operateÆ.Mining is often carried out in remote areas, where the mine will be the most significant and visible user and potential contaminator of water resources. However, wherever it is located, a mineÆs use of water must be managed in the context of two key aspects: the natural parameters of the resource; its abundance, its temporal variability and its chemical and physical qualities other users of the resource; other industry, potable water supplies and ecological requirements of local habitats.It is vital, therefore, that this commodity be assessed to an appropriate degree to help establish the viability and sustainability of the mining project and identify those other stakeholders who may be affected by the mining companyÆs activities.This paper outlines the background to catchment-scale model and presents a cost-effective method for establishing a robust water baseline and creating a water management tool to be used throughout whole mine life cycle. Numerical surface and groundwater modelling has long been established as a tool for reactive management, following collation of yearsÆ worth of data. Now, using freely available remote sensing data and desk study information, analytical modelling techniques can be used cost effectively to provide mining companies with a tool for assessing and managing their water consumption requirements at the outset of a new project venture.The paper includes a selection of case studies to show how the use of analytical modelling can be used as an evaluation and management tool to help not only assess general watershed parameters and water availability but also how it can be used as a tool to provide decision makers with the information to complete æwhat if?Æ scenario assessments. Sixty years ago, underground coal mining was the most hazardous job in the United States. Roof falls were a big part of the problem. They killed about 100 miners every year, more than all other causes put together. Fast forward half a century to 2016, which is the first year ever with zero roof fall fatalities. Just three miners were killed by roof falls during the following 6 years. How was this historic goal achieved? This paper starts with a modern analysis of the causes of the roof fall fatalities in 1968. Then it follows the reductions over time by category, using snapshots of the fatalities occurring in subsequent decades. Along the way, it evaluates the influence of the regulatory environment, changing mining methods, and better ground control technology. The paper shows that in 1968, more than half of roof fall fatalities at large mines were attributable to an inadequate safety culture. The immediate effect of the 1969 Coal Mine Health and Safety Act was to reduce the riskiest activities, like needlessly going under unsupported roof. Other hazards, like large roof falls, required technological developments before they were brought under control. Roof control plans, which the U.S. Bureau of Mines had been advocating since the 1920s, played a significant role throughout the process.

In 1985, ZC Mines (now Pasminco South) had been unprofitable for some years due to a combination of high operating costs, low metal prices, low head grade and an aging and inadequate mining infrastructure. However, the resource of metal in the ground was still of world class, even after some 80 years of mining. A major study, which was to be of two years duration, was therefore commenced to establish a practical and profitable long term mining strategy and to cost the infrastructure options needed for its support and thus form the justification for a capital expenditure program to take the mine profitably into the 21st century and its second century of operation. This paper discusses the rationale behind the methodology adopted and the nature of the results achieved in one aspect of the study - the determination of the mineable resource and the relationship between the head grade/quantity of the economically mineable resource and the variables of cut-off grade, cost structure, annual production rate and metal prices/exchange rates. The basis of the study was the designing of some 5000 scopes to mine out the entire resource for a range of cut- off grades and the assembly of the detailed physical data thus obtained in a stope-by-stope data base for financial and other analysis. Those scopes which were shown to be economically mineable were then scheduled for two optimum annual production/cut-off grade/metal price combinations to provide life-of-mine cost and value of production cash flows.

This paper introduces the Quantified Value-created Process (QVP), a decision-making process for use in mine design and operation. The implementation of the QVP is founded on a ten-step rock engineering design process and a ten-step strategic planning process. The potential of this approach is demonstrated by examples of value created as a result of good research, design, and planning. The QVP is divided into two parts, namely, a ‘planning the process’ section and an ‘implementing the process’ section, and can be considered to be an extension of the risk approach. All costs, direct and indirect, associated with a significant mining decision (design, operational, investment) must be quantified in advance of committing to that decision, to determine the value that will be created in the short, medium, and long terms. Ethical values, associated with health, safety, the environment, public perception, and social aspects, may be difficult to quantify in economic terms, but must nevertheless also be considered. In contrast with a traditional risk approach, the QVP will identify the upside, and allow executives to make more informed strategic decisions. In this context it is essential to actively engage upper management in the decision process.

Following the longest Smelter campaign in BCL?s history it was planned to completely rebuild the flash smelting furnace in 1987. This was the fourth major overhaul and the most extensive so far attempted. Detailed planning took place over several year$ preceding the shutdown and implementation was completed in 54 days. The key to minimising shutdown time was the method designed for installation of the new uptake shaft and reaction shaft. Major repair work was also undertaken in the waste heat boiler and electric furnaces. Both of these activities had an impact on the critical path of the flash smelting furnace overhaul.

In the quest to access valuable critical minerals, humankind is expanding the frontier into extreme environments like space and deep-sea mining. These ambitious enterprises involve considerable costs and lengthy development cycles to ensure the robustness of mining systems in the face of the harshest conditions and unforeseen challenges. Unfortunately, obtaining information from these unexplored territories is complicated. Data is often scarce, incomplete or impossible to obtain until equipment is deployed, leaving engineers facing many uncertainties throughout the design, testing, production and preparation of such missions. Despite these challenges, these extreme environments operate under consistent physical and chemical principles that can be faithfully digitally replicated. However, unexplored areas and dynamic systems like weather and geology continue to carry uncertainties. While eliminating uncertainties remains elusive, Digital Twins offers a means of robust risk management tool. These virtual replicas can excel in simulating extreme conditions and unexpected events, helping optimise and validate mining system designs tailored for such hostile environments. This study takes inspiration from the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) Curiosity Rover’s wheel damage rate to develop a Multiphysics Modelling and Virtual Motion Simulation (MMVMS) system. Using advanced Generative Design, this MMVMS system refines the MSL’s design, simulates component and system performance, and assesses the risk of premature damage while operating on Mars. Additionally, MMVMS integrates cutting-edge CAD design technologies from aerospace and manufacturing to realistically recreate the Martian environment and a detailed representation of MSL, allowing mobility verification and validation simulation to test different components in terms of materials, design, weight, power and, therefore, cost. The research highlights the precision of MMVMS in replicating extreme conditions, simulating and evaluating internal and external variables influencing the entire system (Rover) in real-time, and predicting movements, failures, and premature damage. This sophisticated Digital Twin technology, showcased in this research, holds promise not only for space missions but also to be adapted for terrestrial and deep-sea mining operations.

Seals are explosion-resistant structures built in underground coal mines to isolate abandoned mining areas from the active workings. An equivalent single degree of freedom (SDOF) method such as the single-degree-of-freedom blast effects design spreadsheet (SBEDS) developed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers can be used to design seals to resist mine explosions. The critical input for the SDOF code is the seal resistance function. The objective for this study is to develop engineering data for design of plain concrete (PC) and reinforced concrete (RC) seals using finite element (FE) models. The FE models can then be used to generate resistance functions for different PC and RC seal designs, which can be used in the SDOF codes. The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) researchers designed and built a test fixture for use in conjunction with NIOSH’s Mine Roof Simulator to apply a four-point bending load on the face of the tested seal. Eight large-scale experiments for each PC and RC seal were conducted. The experimental design considered the effects of the foundation strength, hitching and roof-to-floor convergence. Calibrated FE models for PC and RC seals were developed using ANSYS Ver. 13. With a very limited number of engineering-based assumptions and a single set of data—including Young’s modulus, compressive strength, stress-strain relationships, etc.—the PC and RC seal models successfully calculated the recorded resistance functions and failure patterns for a wide range of boundary conditions. Plug and RC seals were assumed for a 1.83-m- (6-ft-) high entry to demonstrate the application of the calibrated finite element models for calculating the resistance functions of these seals. The resistance function of a particular plug seal case was found to be a bilinear relationship. The resistance function of a particular RC seal without shear reinforcement was found to be a nonlinear relationship.

"Future open pit metallurgical coal mines in western Canada will be developed in complex geological environments. The success of these operations will be influenced by the mine operators' ability to prepare accurate mine plans and to predict and, subsequently, 10 control both out-of-seam dilution and coal recovery. Quintette Coal Limited has been mining its tightly folded and severely faulted Mesa depo sit at annual rates of up to 9 Mt of raw coal, since October 1982. Ongoing development drilling combined with continuous utilization of blast hole information, has been required to achieve an acceptable geological data base for short range mine planning. Thrust faulting has been a primary geological cause of difficulty in selectively mining waste and coal, which has resulted in higher than expected dilution in plant feed. The same geological phenomenon has also increased reserves by 6.3% and allowed for expanded mine plans to include a lower thrust plate, ultimately doubling the mines original reserve base. This paper illustrates the geology of the Mesa deposit and the type of work involved in its interpretation. Regional GeologyThe Quintette Coal Limited (QCL) property is located in the Peace River Coal Field of northeastern British Columbia. In this area, northwesterly-trending folds of the Rocky Mountain foothills are commonly cut by multiple, low-angle thrust faults, which dip to the southwest. The Lower Cretaceous Gates Formation, of near shore continental origin, contains 5 to 7 mineable seams of medium volatile bituminous metallurgical coal (Figs. I and 2). These seams normally range in thickness between 0.75 m and 9.5 m and have an aggregate thickness of between 15 m and 22 m."

A refined ad improved self-sealing brattice for use in coal mine rescue and recovery operations for directing the flow of air has been developed and tested by Goodyear Aerospace Corporation for the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The brattice is made from a lightweight, low cost material that meets MSHA flammability requirements. The units can be erected using pins, spade or lightweight extensible poles. Tests here conducted to determine leakage rate from minimal to a maximum of 1.5" H20. The ability to handle reverse flows was demonstrated and a non-flammable foam was used as an auxiliary sealing agent.

Fibre reinforced shotcrete in combination with other types of support systems is becoming the leading support method for underground excavations, especially those present in low quality rock masses. Sudden or rapid ground support failure can expose workers to safety hazards, damage to equipment and others resulting in production interruptions that will impact the cost of operation. Knowing the peak and post-peak strength characteristics of the support system over time are of major importance. Round Determinate Panel Testing of fiber reinforce shotcrete is the primary test used by the mining industry to determine strength characteristics; however, the tests are costly and significant manpower is required in a mine environment to build, store, handle and test the panels. For these reasons numerical modeling can result in an effective method to produce realistic results. This paper examines the strength characteristics Round Determinate Panel tests and its ultimate application in underground excavations, using Itasca?s three dimensional particle flow code (PFC3D).

"Model tests have been performed to investigate the vertical, horizontal and cone tip resistances of bucket pile embedded in sand by different installation methods; suction force by pump and jacking force by actuator. Micro-cone penetrometer is used to evaluate the variation of the effective stress inside and outside of the pile after installation. As a result of vertical pull-out test, the jacked pile shows 3 times larger resistance than the suction-installed pile. For horizontal pull-out test, the ultimate horizontal capacity and the slope of load-displacement curve on the suction-installed pile decreases by 22% and 40%, respectively, compared to the jacked pile. In cone penetration test, inside cone tip resistance of the suction-installed pile is about 40% smaller than the jacked pile, which indicates that the effective stress is reduced due to upward seepage of bucket pile in sand by suction force. Therefore, installation methods can affect the behavior of the bucket pile significantly.INTRODUCTIONA suction force occurred when bucket pile penetrates into sandy soils induces seepage flow into the bucket pile so downward seepage near the outside of bucket pile causes to increases the effective stress, while upward seepage inside the bucket pile decreases the effective stress (Mahn, 2005; Fig. 1). The effect of induced seepage causes to reduce the penetration resistance during installation. On the other hand, reduced effective stress can decrease the horizontal and vertical capacities of bucket pile by significant disturbance at the tip of the bucket pile due to the flow net. Due to the complexity and difficulty considering the effects of suction installation, many previous researchers generally have neglected the effect of suction installation in their experiments. Therefore in this study, the effects of suction installation on resistance of bucket pile is examined."

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. Mineral exploration and mining are challenging businesses. Remote and at times harsh conditions have always made it difficult for exploration, but modern explorers also have to deal with cover, numerous technologies, an explosion of data and critical early community engagement. Mining deals with the reality of moving and breaking thousands of tonnes of rock each day to extract what can be a very minor component of economic value, and, furthermore, society expects that this will be done in a clean and sustainable manner. The exploration and mining challenges appear disparate, but they are intimately related.Although not widely appreciated, both exploration and mining have a long tradition of innovation. Over the last 50 years, major step changes in exploration have resulted from radical advances in our understanding of ore forming processes, new geophysical, geochemical and remote sensing technologies, and new ways to integrate and interrogate data. Over a more extended period, close to 100 years, mining has developed bulk surface and underground methods, selective extraction through flotation and leaching and global positioning system–geographic information system control systems that collectively facilitate mining at a massive scale. And yet, in spite of these successes and the boom that we have enjoyed in the last ten years, the industry is under pressure and the need for innovation and change is paramount.The major drivers for innovation are the need for increased quality in discoveries and mines and the need to interact effectively with communities and jurisdictions such that the benefits of quality mines are recognised and enjoyed widely.We are still making new discoveries around the Pacific Rim and elsewhere, but many argue that the quality – grade and accessibility – of these discoveries is decreasing. The net result is that explorers are delivering resources and reserves for development at lower grades and with higher capital and operating costs than current operations. For mining, the increasing age of many existing operations contributes to increasing costs, which, when combined with decreasing cut-offs and lower grades, also results in declining quality. The combined picture does not look good.Just as the pressure to improve performance and margins in the face of declining inputs increases, we are simultaneously faced with increasing societal demands for improved environmental performance and sustainable practices.
