The paper aims to find a sustainable sintering process through cleaner means, in order to achieve the desired outputs with zero environmental impact. At present, sintering has no control over its environmental impacts. These impacts occur when fossil fuels such as coal and coke are used in metallurgical sintering. These fossil fuels are undoubtedly effective in their assigned reducing task, but simultaneously emit about 220 kg of GHGs (greenhouse gases) per tonne of sinter produced. The current attempt has focused on reducing these emission levels by switching from coke to a renewable fuel source such as biomass. Biomass is a cleaner fuel source with a significantly lower emission footprint compared to coke. In the experimental campaign, sawdust and wood-charcoal were used in substitution for coke. Experiments were designed in a progressing substitution to obtain the maximum substitution ability without compromising the sinter properties. Sawdust as raw biomass source optimally substituted 10% of coke. The substitution levels were remarkably higher (30%) for wood charcoal due to its low moisture and high calorific values. A fuel blend with 30% biomass and remaining coke succeeded in producing a sinter with acceptable quality indices. Sinters prepared with or without biomass contribution shared an identical phase transformation and microstructures. In order to to maintain consistency in the process, every effort was made to maintain all operational and process parameters identically, except for the fuelling framework. Standing supports have been used in coal mines for decades to enhance roof support capability. Sometimes standing supports are used as a tool to resist the lateral movement of spalled ribs. Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) are conducting a testing program for different types of standing supports (steel and timber) to investigate the effect of lateral loading on their vertical loading capacities and the factors affecting their lateral loading capacities. In this paper, the mine roof simulator (MRS), at the NIOSH Pittsburgh research facility, was used to determine the response of steel props to vertical and horizontal loadings. Finite element models (FEMs) were developed and verified using the tested steel props. To justify the testing program for testing standing supports with end-conditions of rock-like materials, the verified prop models were used to study the effect of a wide range of roof and floor materials (gray shale, shale, and claystone) on the critical buckling loads of the steel props. Also, several lateral loading scenarios were evaluated in which the steel props were laterally loaded at different heights. The critical buckling load for steel props setting up against a claystone roof and floor was found to be one-half of that shown by the MRS test where roof and floor platens are made of steel. Minimum prop performance was observed when the lateral load was applied at the mid-height of the steel prop, especially at small lateral displacement (less than 2 in).

The Ohio River Tunnel Project encountered multiple unexpected geotechnical challenges which, continuing to develop over time, hampered excavation completion and impacted the cast-in-place final lining technique and work execution sequence for the entire project. The continued degradation of the excavated hard rock tunnel conditions led to a unique, dynamic, geologic setting that forced the project to innovate new and adaptable measures allowing for a conventional cast-in-place liner to be completed in a safe and timely manner and minimize delay.

We are here today to witness the graduation of 63 young men as Engineers in the mineral industries . It is an important occasion and one in which the public takes a keen interest , since this school has long been famous for the educational facilities it affords young men, and for the high professional standing of its graduates . : : : It is fitting that once each year we should pause to review the path the student has traveled , and to reflect upon the perspective opening before him as an engineer . I was invited to come from Washington to take part in this ceremony and to say something to these young graduates . In searching for a theme ," it occurred to me. that perhaps my best contribution would be to duscuss certain beliefs as to college training , deal with the situation in which the young engineer finds himself on graduation , touch on the new ideas of the social and political responsibilities of the engineer , and point out what he may expect to find in practice , and , above all , what he must do to orient himself properly in the mining profession and maintain the best traditions of our brotherhood . Let us first review your college days and see what they have done for you . I am told there are still many temptations in college . I know there used to be . Rest assured the same holds true in the professional life ahead of you. The main difference is , perhaps , that your greatest temptations in college were those offered by your teachers , who tried to entice you into realms of harder work, closer application , increased concentration , clearer thinking and better understanding , by animating your curiosity and increasing your powers of reasoning and of observation . In other words , here you have carefully and systematically been decoyed toward finer and loftier things . Do not expect that similar helpful influences will greet you on every side in your professional life . Often quite the contrary is the case .

In recent years, t h e future supply of tellurium has been called into question due to the anticipated rapidly increasing demand from thin film cadmium telluride photovoltaics. Since tellurium is produced as a byproduct of other extractive processes – principally, the electrolytic refining of primary copper sulfide ore – it is important to explore the dynamics of the parent metal extraction and processing – in this case copper – when attempting to answer this question. This research explores the changing landscape of global copper production; introducing system diagramming and the concept of byproduct intensity (BPI) to illustrate concerning downward trends in tellurium supply potential. Upon closer inspection, it is concluding that, while a likely contributor to these downward trends, the increased use of non- traditional copper production techniques alone are not responsible; other factors include market substitution and incomplete data reporting. Additionally, a review of literature on tellurium recovery processing reveals a promising outlook for future supplies; highlighting potential for improvements in yield, which allow producers to make better use of what is available, even in the face of suppressed BPI.

Metallurgists frequently use a small number of large samples to characterise expected mill performance, with the a priori assumption that these few samples are representative of the entire deposit. Geometallurgical sampling is becoming more prevalent as a way to use many smaller samples to indicate the expected recovery as part of the Mineral Resource or Ore Reserve estimation.Recent increases in prices for iron ore, together with the potential to produce high iron and low contaminant concentrates, have resulted in a renewed interest in recovering magnetite from banded iron formation and other deposits.Geometallurgical evaluation of magnetite involves approaches to sample preparation, sample analysis and resource estimation that are different from the methods commonly used for haematite iron ore. The magnetite sampling protocol is specific to each deposit, and is typically designed around a specific metallurgical flow sheet.The sampling protocol will typically include the use of Davis Tube analysis. The Davis Tube is a bench-scale test that is used for determining the mass magnetic recovery from a small amount of sample ground to a specific size. The magnetic concentrate may then be analysed and together with the mass magnetic recovery, may be used to simulate the expected mill recovery.During resource modelling, the mass magnetic recoveries and concentrate grades may be assigned to a block model using regressions with other chemical constituents, or may be estimated directly. For estimation of the concentrate grades, a weighting can be applied to account for the different mass magnetic recoveries from each sample and the impact of these differences on the concentrate estimates.This paper presents an overview of the use of metallurgical test data in resource evaluation for magnetite deposits.

The title of my paper, "A Company's Response to Federal Coal Leasing," brings to mind a picture of a dog chasing its tail. This is what the coal industry, has been doing since the Federal coal leasing moratorium went into effect in 1971. We've gone around in many circles, but we are only very slowly, if at all, getting closer to catching our tails, i.e., efficient, economical, and rational Federal coal leasing. My companies, The North American Coal Corporation and its four Subsidiaries, The Falkirk and Western Plains Mining Companies and The Coteau and Missouri Valley Properties Companies, together hold in excess of 4.5 billion tons of lignite reserves in North Dakota. Some of our North Dakota properties are substantially interspersed with Federal coal, with the government holding title to the minerals in every other section. This checkerboard pattern of Federal ownership has made it difficult to develop and market some of our reserves, and, as a result, it has become imperative that we be familiar with and active in the Federal Coal Leasing Program.

Shotcrete is a highly adaptable and widely used underground construction material at infrastructure and mining projects around the world. In fact, many projects could not have been completed without its utilization. As underground projects became larger the use of mechanized wet-mix spraying gradually replaced manual dry-mix shotcrete applications. This paper details some of the reasons for that and provides information on the equipment and operational factors including safety and productivity required to successfully complete underground shotcrete projects.

This paper presents the details of the Kramer tunnel project in the Federal State of Bavaria, Germany. This road tunnel, which has been under construction since December 2019, is the key component of the western bypass of the town of GarmischPartenkirchen. Once completed, it will relieve the town’s central district from enormous volumes of traffic. The contractor is the joint venture named ARGE Kramertunnel consisting of BeMo Tunnelling and Subterra. The whole project will be completed and handed over to the project owner, Staatliches Bauamt Weilheim, in 2023. The opening of the entire bypass section including the tunnel to traffic is planned for 2024. The tunnel, with a total length of 3,609 m (2.24 miles) and an estimated cost of EUR 178 million (incl. VAT), is designed as a single-tube, double-lane structure with one traffic lane for each direction of travel. The safety issue that exists for single-tube tunnels is solved by a parallel escape tunnel passable for vehicles. All tunnels and ducts are excavated according to the principles of the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM). In order to reduce the geological risk for the owner, the escape tunnel was supposed to be completed before the design process for the main tunnel ever began. The exploratory tunnel was awarded to a competitor with an separate contract.

"Despite the availability of established, sophisticated methods for planning and designing stable slopes in rock, comparatively little attention is usually paid to the problems of carrying out the excavation. Blasting should be carefully planned to obtain optimum fragmentation as well as steep, stable working and final pit walls. The principal difficulty facing a blast designer is the lack of prior information about the many critical blasting characteristics of the rock mass. The common practise of trial-and-error lasting will eventually lead to a suitable program, but must be repeated time after time in variable geology. This frequently results in many blast-damaged slopes. Recent research indicates that monitoring drill performance will yield a Rock Quality Index which correlates to a Powder Factor value. The drilling can provide a continual supply of data, reflecting changes in the rock mass which enables the selection of an economical powder factor.IntroductionWhen planning to excavate a large-scale rock slope, engineer s will generally spend considerable effort to produce a safe, feasible and economical design. Much time will usually be spent on the field map ping, 'structural geologic studies, surface and subsurface hydrology, determination of strengths and effective friction angles of discontinuities, and finally checking stability with the aid of mathematical and analytical models. If the rock cut is to be along a transportation corridor, the prime justification for this time and effort is to produce a clean, stable slope which will be safe for those travelling or working beneath it. For the walls of an open-pit mine, there is the additional economic incentive to maintain the steepest stable slope angle for the minimum stripping ratio (Stewart and Kennedy)."

High strength-light weight materials are very attractive for the transportation sector, particularly to the aerospace industry. High strength-age hardenable aluminium alloys are widely used in airframes due to their unique combination of strength, density, toughness, corrosion resistance, cost and easy processing. However, the hardening capacity of such alloys is somehow saturated due to thermodynamic issues related to the conventional processing. The production of aluminum-matrix composites is a promising strategy to overcome this limitation, resulting in strength levels that cannot be reached by actual commercial aluminum alloys. In the present work, multiwall carbon nanotubes were used to reinforce the AA6061 aluminium alloy. 1 and 2% weight percent of MWCNT were mixed to the alloy powder by high-energy ball-milling process. The blended powder was consolidated by hot extrusion. The obtained composite bars were submitted to heat treatment for the T6 condition in order to combine both CNT dispersion and precipitation hardening effects. Optical and scanning electron microscopy, as well as hardeness testing, was used to characterize the bars. Typical wrought microstructure, free of defects, was observed on the extruded bars. Hardness of the composites was observed to increase by 20, 28 and 68% for 1% MWCNT 6 h milling, 2% MWCNT 6 h milling and 2% MWCNT 10 h milling, respectively, in the as-extruded condition. The better performance for the composites blended at higher milling time was attributed to a better nanotubes dispersion. Subsequent heat treatment to the T6 condition did not result in additional hardening.

"Monitoring of all the waste streams from Falconbridge's Sudbury Operations to determine whether they meet the required standards, has been performed for many years. By 1969, however, the number of samples being collected had become so large that a complete revision of the existing systemwas necessary. Sites previously designated by name only, were numbered, clearly marked on the ground and on maps which were circulated to all concerned. The types of pollutants analyzed were determined and specified for each sampling location and a chemical analysis report form was designed. The sampling schedule has been computerized to produce a periodic listing of the samples to be taken and the analyses required.An area map showing sampling sites, chemical analysis report form, spill report and a computer print-out example are shown and explained.EVOLUTION OF FALCONBRIDGE'S WASTEWATER. MANAGMENT SYSTEMFalconbridge Nickel Mines employs some 4500 people, operates nine mines, four mills and a smelter in the Sudbury basin. The operations are geographically fragmented into four widely separated locations, the Falconbridge operations east of Sudbury and the Onaping operations in Levack Township being the two largest of the four. The Lockerby area located to the west and the Lindsley Mine just north of Sudbury are now under development. The magnitude, the diversity and nature of the operations are such that constant vigilance is needed to prevent inadvertent damage to the environment. The purpose of this paper is to describe the information system used to monitor and control waste-water disposal on Falconbridge's properties to help ensure the maintenance of effluent standards satisfactory to the Ontario Water Resources Commission (OWRC) and to the Ontario Department of Health."

Borates have been mined in the desert areas of California and Nevada for more than 100 years. To about 1890, playa surface mining provided the chief sources of boron minerals. Underground mining of colemanite and later of borax and kernite was predominate until about twenty years ago. Open pit mining of the large deposits of borax and kernite near Boron, California has been most significant for the past twenty years. Mining of colemanite in the Ryan, California area, near Death Valley, began in 1907. Following the discovery of the large deposits in the Boron area (about 1957), mining in the Death Valley area became nearly nonexistent. Only small tonnages were mined for special uses. Little mining was done in the Boraxo area near Ryan. The first claim was made in about 1915. In 1960 the area became the property of the Kern County Land Company, which was acquired by Tenneco Oil Company in 1967. In 1976 the various boiate properties and claims in this region were acquired by American Borate Corporation. The open pit mine is now approximately 122 m (400 ft) deep, 910 m (3000 ft) long and 305 m (1000 ft wide). The borates in the Boraxo pit consist primarily of three minerals. These are about 50% colemanite (CB6011 5H20), about 40% probertite (NaCaB50g 5H20), and 10% ulexite (NaCaBgOg 5H20). The colemanite, along with boric acid and high-grade colemanite ore from Turkey provide the only sodium-free borates for production of textile grade fiberglas. When heated to its decomposition temperature, colemanite decrepitates to a fine powder, which is the basis for the concentration process. The gangue minerals in this deposit are primarily calcite and clays, including bentonite. The ore body has a very low arsenic content, which is a desirable feature. Test work had been done with samples prior to the results discussed herein. This paper will discuss results of test work which were the basis for erection of a plant, and the subsequent plant operations. Laboratory Calcination and Air Tabling Tests Laboratory calcination tests showed that substantial upgrading of the borate could be accomplished by calcining followed by screening of the calcined material. Removal of the + 28 mesh calcine resulted in borate losses of less than 10% with a rejection of 40 weight % or more of the calcine. The minus 65 mesh calcine generally met the requirement of containing 48%, or more, B203. The minus 28 plus 65 mesh material contained an intermediate quantity of borate and would require additional treatment. Testing demonstrated that ore would not have to be reduced to a size finer than 19 mm (3/4 in.) prior to calcination. A temperature range from 400 to 455OC (750 to 850°F) was apparently satisfactory. Calcination at a temperature of 48Z°C (900°F), or higher, was unsatisfactory due to fusion. All laboratory calcination tests were static tests conducted by placing small covered charges in a laboratory furnace for 40 min. In all tests vapor issues from the furnace for 5 to 7 min. Following this period the ore could be heard "popping," due to decrepitation of the colemanite. The reaction generally continued for approximately one-half hour. Various size fractions of the calcination products from laboratory tests were subjected to laboratory air tabling tests, usually after removing the plus 28 mesh material. Laboratory air tabling tests were conducted employing a Whippet V-80 model air table manufactured by Sutton, Steele and Steele Co. now known as Tripple S Dynamics. Variables include both end and side-tilt, speed of vibration, and quantity of air rising through the deck. In addition to the variables in the machine itself, the feed rate is also a rather critical variable. Testing demonstrated that all - 28 mesh size fractions of the calcine could be successfully concentrated to 48% F2O3 or greater. For the finer material recoveries into the concentrate were between 85 and 90% of the borate. With the coarser material a substantial amount of middling was produced which required cleaner tabling. Laboratory calcination and air tabling tests indicated a process whereby the borate could be concentrated to about 50% B203 with borate recoveries approaching 90%. Moreover, the iron content of the concentrate was well below the required specification of 0.3% Fe2O3. Pilot Plant Calcination Following the laboratory test work described above, pilot plant testing was conducted to prove the process, provide data for engineering studies, and provide product for a prospective purchaser. The kiln used was 0.9 m-diam (3 ft) by 9.0 m (30 ft) long and had a belly section 1.2 m-diam (4 ft) by 2.74 m (9 ft) long near the discharge end. The kiln was operated at a speed of 0.7 rpm. Gas was fired into the kiln at an average rate of 27.1 m3/hr (958.4 cu ft per hr). The air to gas ratio used was 10:1. The ore was fed to the kiln countercurrent to the flame and discharged through a hopper into a screw conveyor which discharged to a 1.2 m (48 in.) Sweco separator. The separator had 28, 65, and 150 mesh screen cloths, with the plus 28 mesh fraction being discarded. The minus 28 mesh fractions were later subjected to air tabling. The exit gases, containing some calcine dust, were swept through two cyclones to recover the dust. The gases then were scrubbed in a Ducon scrubber; very little dust reported past the first cyclone. This paper discusses the subject of "Improving Contracting Methods" from the owners point of view, particularly the public. An overview is given of the work of the U.S. National Committee on Tunneling Technology and some apparent results of the implementation of these recommendations or lack thereof. Selected recommendations that are not being implemented are discussed as to the the desirability and the possible impact of their implementation. Impediments to acceptance of the recommendations are identified and solutions proposed. The difference in the flexibility, attitudes and approaches of owners, public, quasi-public and private, toward improving contracting methods are discussed. Particular emphasis is given to the fact that the onus to improve is on the owner because they usually develop the contractual language or at least have the final decision on its content and are or should be an equal party to the contract during its administration.

"IntroductionCrows Nest Resources Limited (CNRL), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Shell Canada Resources Limited, is nearing completion of its first coal project, located in southeastern British Columbia. CNRL shipped over 700,000 tonnes of thermal coal to foreign markets in 1982. With the completion of the metallurgical coal plant in December, 1982, shipments of both thermal and metallurgical coal will increase substantially in 1983 and will approach the anticipated operating capacity of 3.0 million tonnes in 1985. The Line Creek Mine lies some 25 kilometres north of Sparwood in southeast British Columbia (Fig. 1). The open-pit mine is located on top of Line Creek Ridge, with coal being hauled 16 km to the thermal and metallurgical coal preparation plants, situated adjacent to the already existing Canadian Pacific Railway. Most of the coal is moved by 108 car unit trains by CP Rail to coal ports in Vancouver, where it is loaded onto vessels destined for overseas markets. Some smaller scale car load shipments are moved by rail to contiguous markets in the Pacific Northwest. History The southeastern British Columbia area, known as the East Kootenays, is steeped in a rich coal mining heritage, dating back to the latter part of the nineteenth century. Predecessors of Crows Nest Resources Limited were instrumental in developing the rich coal reserves in the area. In 1887, William Fernie, a pioneer-cum-prospector recognized the potential of coal deposits in the East Kootenays. Spurred by the relentless push west of the Canadian Pacific Railway through the Crows Nest Pass area, Fernie recognized that it was just a matter of time before the steam locomotives provided him with his required market. That time arrived in 1897 when Fernie helped to form the Crows Nest Pass Coal Company and coal mining commenced at Coal Creek, near his namesake town of Fernie. During its almost 70-year history, this company produced over 48 million tonnes of steam coal and 8 million tonnes of coking coal. In 1965, the Crows Nest Pass Coal Company was re-named Crows Nest Industries, to better reflect its expanded interests into forest products, and it is the latter company which Shell Canada Resources Limited acquired in 1978. The extensive coal resources of Shell, in both Alberta and British Columbia, were rationalized into one group with the birth of Crows Nest Resources Limited to manage and develop the coal holdings."

The tailings disposal and water utilization problems at Strathcona are described in this paper, with sections devoted to the Moose Lake watershed system, tailing impounds, the construction of dams and the operation of the Moose Lake neutralization plant for the elimination of acidity, including the equipment used.

"The case is presented for the use of simulators for the computer-based training (CBT) of mining plant operators and for introducing them to automatically controlled systems. As well as their use in the classroom, the role of simulators is examined for ""on-plant"" use in trouble-shooting, fault-finding and maintenance of automatic systems. Case studies are presented showing how specific simulators are becoming established or have potential in the areas of automated materials handling, machine testing, setup and guidance. The evolution of scientific simulations into simulators of widespread practical use is discussed and present-day limitations of computer speed and graphics are considered. Related areas of research for the Canadian Centre for Automation and Robotics in Mining (CCARM) are identified.IntroductionCCARM's Commitment to Simulator DevelopmentAs automation is progressively developed and exploited in mining operations, there arises an urgent need to educate and train staff responsible for its introduction and operation in our mines and for its maintenance. For this purpose , an essential ingredient of an automation program is the development of appropriate mining system simulators for use by a wide variety of personnel. The author has been fortunate to have been closely involved with the development of automatic control systems for a variety of mining machines and mining systems in the United Kingdom. A key ingredient of the research phase in each case has been the use of simulation techniques. As projects have moved toward their commissioning and exploitation phase, the simulations have evolved into simulators tailored for use by machine operators and maintenance personnel. Illustrative case studies are presented later. The researach of the newly constituted Canadian Centre for Automation and Robotics in Mining (CCARM) will likewise involve extensive simulation, and the development of simulators (from the scientific programs) for use at the mine by operators and technicians will be given high priority in the Centre's over-all work program."

The Jundee gold mining operation is located in the Western Australian Yandal Greenstone belt. Jundee is a mature operation encompassing multiple and complex underground ore resources, dwindling open pit reserves, large surface stockpiles, small satellite resources and two near-mine but stand alone process plants. The imminent completion of continuous open pit mining and the associated drop-off in total mill feed precipitated a review of the strategic mine plan and development of options that would optimise the exploitation of the remaining mineral resources and the utilisation of the existing plant and infrastructure.An initial review of the strategic decisions to be made, available options as well as the quantity, complexity and co-dependency of the strategic variables quickly led to the conclusion that an Operations Research style modelling approach would be appropriate. An 'off-the-shelf' program engine by the name of WHATSBEST! (LINDO Systems Inc.) was chosen on the basis of price, reputation and ease of use. The model was formulated with the unknown variables (being the ore mining rates) expressed as a proportion of the maximum achievable ore mining rate from each source. Costs were defined as variable or fixed, with this definition being a key aspect of the modelling process. The critical application of the model was in determining the optimal extraction rate of ore, the destination (ie Jundee or Nimary mill) and the sequence of extraction of each ore source that maximized the cash flow of the operation. The program was designed to be able to quickly derive an optimal result from the many variables, replacing the previous laborious iterative process of arriving at an acceptable answer by means of several large and static spreadsheet models. This paper presents the process of selection, formulation, application and scope of operation of the turn-key linear and non-linear program strategic model now used as part of the Jundee Operation strategic decision making process.
