An analysis was conducted to determine the effects of blasting on slope stability and downstream comminution processes. To investigate these effects, the extent of blast-induced rock damage and the magnitude of induced stress were examined. This analysis showed that damage may extend up to 500 m (1 MPa, tensile strength) into the rock mass, a distance that is sufficient to have an impact on the pitscale slope over the long term. In addition, the damage zone was calculated using the assumption that compressive waves are the primary agent in microfracturing during blast fragmentation. The calculated damage zone — up to 2.2 m (43 MPa, rock mass compressive strength) — indicates that microfracturing can occur throughout 20-50% of the entire rock mass in the blasting area, depending on the blast geometry, burden and spacing. Finally, an economic analysis was conducted by comparing two assumed blasts in a copper mine. The change in energy required for crushing and grinding was demonstrated using Bond’s law after increasing the blast energy from 180 kcal/t to 350 kcal/t. A total cost saving of 13.3% ($9.4M) was achieved with the increase. However, the benefits of blast-induced microfracturing must be balanced against the potential impacts to slope stability to ensure safe conditions, a top priority in mining operations.

Due to the modernisation of mines, traditional training methods may be supplemented to support the upskilling of supervisors in mines. A project was initiated by the SAMERDI SATCAP programme to demonstrate the “art of possibility” through a modern training methodology. Two exemplar digital supervisory leadership development modules for underground gold and platinum-group metal conventional and modernising mines, were developed for potential uptake by the mining industry. These exemplar modules were exhibited on a digital platform, towards leading and driving mining modernisation. The research adopted a mixed method approach that included a literature review, a review of an existing supervisory leadership development programme, data gathering, a pilot study, and stakeholder validation workshops. The research supported the development of exemplar digitised modules. The two digitised modules were showcased to the industry for potential adoption. Training slides, a facilitator guide, and a training video were developed for ease of use by industry. The training modules are generic and not specific to a particular mine. They may be used by multi-commodity mines, including gold and platinum-group metals, as ‘stand-alone’ modules. They are customisable, through consultation with relevant service providers for specific working environments. The findings indicated that both the traditional classroom training and the new digitised online learning solution offer advantages for supervisory leadership development. Digital learning is not a new concept for supervisors at mines and modern training methods are well-supported by supervisors in the industry. A ‘modernised’ training solution may consider a ‘blended’ learning approach that combines traditional training with digital methods.

It is not unlikely in fact it is probable, that these huge stores of petroleum may ultimately be proven to exist within the present boundaries of the U.S.S.R. The size of the country is almost beyond imagination it is 2.7 times as big as the United States. Great sedimentary basins exist in all its different geological provinces, much of which are entirely untested and barely prospected. Oil in commercial quantities is actually produced from formations in every period from the Devonian to the Pleistocene. In the Emba region alone, 300 salt domes are known with an estimate of 700 still to be found. Only 22 of the 300 have been drilled and all showed oil. Of the 22 domes drilled six are now producing. The economic growth of Hong Kong and adjacent territories in Southern China is, to a considerable extent, dependant on air transportation, but the present Kai Tak Airport is incapable of expansion to meet future needs. After years of study, agreement was reached to build a new airport on the island of Chek Lap Kok, some 34 km remote from Hong Kong, with an ultimate capacity of 87M passengers and 8.9 Ml of cargo per annum. Apart from the building of the airport and its associated infrastructure (including a new town), other similar massive construction works have been necessary in the form of land reclamation from the sea and existing outer lying islands. The construction of bridges, tunnels, railways and highways are also an integral part of the project. The paper provides a broad overview of the concepts of the scheme (called The Airport Core Programme) and highlights some of the major operations and equipment being used in the projects, whose cost at 1992 prices was reckoned to he Hong Kong (HR)$l63hn.

For soil remediation technology to be effective, a thorough understanding of the interactions between a targeted contaminant and the soil matrix is crucial. Proper selection of remediation technology, based on understanding the bonding/binding characteristics of the soil and contaminant, can often result in significant remediation cost savings. Contaminated soil cleanup is complicated by both the physical nature of the soil formation and the behavior of contaminants introduced into the formation. Contaminants can exist in the subsurface in different phase attached to the soil surfaces, dissolved in the ground water, or occupying pore spaces as a separate gaseous or liquid phase. Contaminants properties and how they exist in the subsurface influence their toxicity, mobility and treatability with different remediation technologies A soil characterization study was performed to provide information for remediation technology selection for an inorganic lead contaminated soil. The soil pH, TCLP analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, the soluble anions and cations present, equilibrium leaching tests, analysis by x-ray fluorescence, sequential extractions and speciation analysis using scanning electron microscopy, were all used. Results provided many insights into contaminant behavior in the soil, indicating ultimately whether soil washing or solidification/ stabilization remediation technologies were applicable.

"The current paper presents the results of a study designed to explore the types of practices that are fundamentally important to developing and maintaining comprehensive risk-based health and safety management systems (HSMS) in mining organizations. Eighteen practicing health and safety (H&S) executives, managers, and professionals from a variety of mining commodities were asked to assess the fundamental importance of 20 distinct elements and 133 different practices assembled from a review of several HSMS consensus standards. The research approach assumes that developing and maintaining a robust HSMS requires unwavering attention to activities designed to either: 1) directly contribute to a risk management system’s plan-do-check-act cycle; or 2) build an organization’s internal infrastructure without which the cycle cannot be sustained. The results of this study suggest that the following areas require consistent focus and attention: Leadership Development; Accountability; Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Development; System Coordination; Culture Enhancement; Behavior Optimization; and Risk Management Studies. Each element and its corresponding top-ranked and top-rated practices are discussed.INTRODUCTION Since the time of the Industrial Revolution, occupational health and safety (H&S) management has been a topic of practitioner thought and academic inquiry (1). In the U.S., decades of regulation and research have resulted in a surplus of prescriptive information (techniques, tools, approaches, standards, programs, practices, policies, etc.). With an abundance of such information, a simple H&S solution to address a problem in the U.S. mining industry may seem straightforward. Counter to this assertion, however, some evidence suggests that the abundance of information may create complexity and cause confusion in the minds of organizational leaders and H&S managers, ultimately discouraging the voluntary pursuit of a sound approach (2). In line with this perspective, in 2006 the U.S. National Mining Association (NMA) formed an independent commission to examine H&S management issues within the mining industry. The findings of the commission called for the mining industry to adopt a risk-based management paradigm. In the presentation of its findings, the commission stated that “…every mine should employ a sound risk-analysis process, should conduct a risk analysis, and should develop a management plan to address significant hazards identified by the analysis” (3). Grounded in the well-known plan-do-check-act cycle, the recommended risk management system allows for mines to ground strategic management choices in their mine-specific hazards and risk profiles"

"The reservoirs of Mississippian Mi-dale beds and Frobisher beds found in the Weyburn field lie at the north-western termination of a broad productive belt extending 120 miles along the northeastern rim of the Williston basin. These carbonates, and inter-bedded evaporites, originated during cycles of marine transgression and regression, and were deposited as rock types characteristic of shoal, lagoon, and basinward shelf environments. The Frobisher-Alida Beds, which form a secondary reservoir to the main Midale Beds of producing zone are composed of oolit1c, fragmental-bioclastic, vugular limestone capped by an impervious dolomitic mudstone. Production is controlled by localized structural features resulting from de-positional build-up. Excellent reservoir conditions are accompanied by an active water drive. The Frobisher Evaporite, consisting of massive primary anhydrite with dolomitic veinlets, forms the floor seal for the Midale beds oil accumulation. A significant facies transition into an oolitic, bioclastic, vugular limestone characterizes this unit. Beyond the depositional margin of the evaporitic facies, marked increases in porosity and permeability of the en-tire reservoir are noted. Carbonate units overlying the areal extent of the Frobisher Evaporite exhibit a greater degree of metasomatism, dolomitization, and more abundant secondary anhydrite.Porous carbonates comprising the producing zone of the Midale beds are divided into an oolitic, fragmental bioclastic, vugular limestone, and an overlying granular marly lime-stone unit, capped, by the Midale Evaporite. Oil is accumulated in a stratigraphic trap bounded above and be-low by primary anhydrite and truncated by the post-Mississippian erosional surface. Mississippian strata dip basinward from this erosional surface in a broad homocline exhibiting only minor irregularities. Rapid lateral and vertical porosity and permeability variations are common. Localized, separated, porous lenticles contain interstitial water in areas where the Midale beds are underlain by the Frobisher Evaporite. The major portion of the field, however, is capable of water-free production. Bottom and edge waters are found in certain portions of the field. Productive limits are tentatively defined around most of the present field perimeter. A large area along foe southern edge of the field remains open to future development. Probable ultimate remaining recoverable crude oil reserves, as of September 30th, 1958, were estimated by Mc-Daniel Consultants Ltd. to be in excess of 330 million barrels."

Industry, especially extractive industry, must now give serious attention to the impact its operations have on the natural environment and on the economic, social, and cultural context within which it operates.   While this obligation is statutorily managed, there has been a recent shift towards a culture of self responsibility. Industry is now talking about earning its ôsocial licence to operateö and the importance of maintaining the ôtriple bottom lineö, thus adding environmental and social performance to the usual financial criteria used to measure organisational performance. The social context within which companies operate has also become more sensitive with industry responding to a growing public expectation that it conduct itself in a way that strives for sustainability by operating and developing in a way that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.   There are glowing accounts of industries engaging and collaborating with the communities within which they are based. In amongst these are also some disasters which result from cultural assumptions, industry created dependencies and the failure to attain community buy-in despite significant investment by the industry involved.   There are also remarkable stories of communities, and action groups within communities, being a significant catalyst for positive change of their natural, cultural and social environment. In amongst these stories there are also accounts of long and drawn out battles; adversarial situations where no one wins; a litany of mistrust, tricks and tactics, with the better resourced party ultimately achieving its primary objectives at the cost of the other (and at the cost of any potential fruitful, mutual relationships).   So what makes the difference in achieving the positive rather than negative outcomes? The answer lies in the way the outcomes are achieved. Building relationships based on good communication, respect for divergent views, mutual understanding, and the development of trust and empathy, makes it possible to identify shared goals and objectives that best meet the needs of all parties.   Research indicates the mining industry is making good progress in developing policy and commitment to community development and engagement but that, ætranslating commitments into improved practices at the site level remains one of the industryÆs toughest challengesÆ. (Australian Government - Community Engagement and Development Handbook October 2006 @ page 49.)   This paper considers the merits of a process of community collaboration and what it has to offer in terms of meeting that challenge.

This study was made to show the growth of petroleum coking and to determine trends and characteristics of marketing and utilization of coke on the West Coast, comparing these data with those of the United States as a whole. An earlier Bureau of Mines economic survey of petroleum coke was made in 1930 before the widespread use of coking processes. Data, derived from published and unpublished literature as well as from interviews with industry representatives, show a marked increase in the production of petroleum coke since the end of World War II. This increase resulted from the need of refiners to upgrade heavy residuums for which the demand was diminishing. Increasing coke production as well as significant market shifts away from California-produced coke have created excessive stocks of petroleum coke on the West Coast. The causes of these market shifts were based mainly on (1) economic factors and (2) certain undesirable qualities of some of the petroleum coke produced in California.

The contract is concerned with feasibility studies, design and fabrication of a group of prototype hand-held test instruments and machine-mounted test instruments for measurement of electrical shock hazards of mining machines. An instrument for use in open pit mining machine ground wire verification was proposed, developed, built, and tested. This report presents the design and operational theory of the open pit instrument as well as information on the program to improve the original prototype hand-held machine-mounted test instruments.

"Testing of the NIOSH-designed roof bolter canopy air curtain (CAC) has gone through many iterations demonstrating successful dust control performance under controlled conditions. J.H. Fletcher & Co. (Fletcher), an original equipment manufacturer of mining equipment, has further developed the CAC concept by incorporating it into the design of its roof bolting machines. A new CAC design has been developed incorporating the results of testing of the NIOSH design and the recent Fletcher design. Observations from smoke testing conducted on this new CAC design in a laboratory setting show promise for improved performance. INTRODUCTION Exposure to respirable coal mine dust can cause coal workers’ pneumoconiosis (CWP) otherwise known as black lung. If silica is present in the dust, the miner may develop silicosis in addition to CWP. CWP and silicosis are occupational respiratory diseases that are ultimately fatal and have no cure. The only method of prevention is through elimination of exposure to respirable coal mine dust and crystalline silica (quartz). The current occupational exposure limit (on an MRE basis) for respirable coal mine dust is 2.0 mg/m3 during each shift that a miner is exposed in the active workings of the mine or in mine facilities [30 CFR 70.100 2015]. Recently enacted legislation changes this standard beginning in August 2016 to 1.5 mg/m3 for a full working shift [Federal Register, 2014]. If the respirable coal mine dust contains more than 5% silica, the applicable respirable dust standard is reduced; calculated as 10 divided by the percent quartz present [30 CFR 70.101] so that the effective exposure limit for respirable quartz is 0.1 mg/m3 for a full working shift. Sources of exposure to respirable coal mine dust for the roof bolting occupations include infrequent maintenance and cleaning of the vacuum dust collection system and operating the bolter downwind (in the return air) of the continuous miner [Goodman and Organiscak, 2003]. Recent studies have demonstrated that vacuum dust collection systems are effective in capturing bolter-generated dust, if maintained and operated correctly and if proper face ventilation techniques are used. However, most exposure to respirable coal mine dust for the roof bolter occurs when the roof bolter machine is operated downwind of the continuous miner [Potts et al., 2011; Colinet et al., 2013]. Because of this higher exposure downwind of the continuous miner, the roof bolter is generally limited to working downwind of the miner only once during a production shift"

The microbial-mediated recovery of valuable metals locked in mining wastes presents an economical alternative to conventional hydrometallurgical processes. The present study investigated the bioleaching response of a low-grade nickeliferous pyrrhotite tailings (0.6 wt% Ni) and an upgraded pyrrhotite tailings (1 wt% Ni) produced by Vale Base Metals in the Sudbury Basin of Ontario, with the ultimate aim of maximizing Ni recovery. The initial part of the study focused on the bacterial adaptive evolution protocol, by repeatedly sub-culturing an indigenous culture from an acid mine drainage site on 2% (w/v) pyrrhotite tailings. The results showed that the extent of Ni dissolution is positively correlated with microbial activity. Microbial profiling revealed A. ferroxidans to be the dominant member of the microbial consortium. The enriched culture was used for optimizing the growth medium by varying the concentration of essential growth nutrients. Finally, an aerated biotic and abiotic leach of a 10% (w/v) upgraded pyrrhotite tailings with and without pH control, showed a higher recovery of Ni in the pH controlled experiments. These results demonstrate that a high concentration of the oxidant Fe3+ in solution promotes the dissolution of Ni. Furthermore, the sulphide conversion into So was found to be higher in the pH controlled experiments (32%), relative to the experiment without pH control (10%).

The Federal Bureau of Mines has been a leader in resource recovery research since it was founded in 1910. Until the early 19601s, most of the projects were concerned primarily with the task of extending and improving conventional technology oriented to secondary metals and minerals upgrading and processing for marketable products of highest value. By the mid-1960's with the passage of the Solid Waste Disposal Act of 1965, all resource recovery research programs were increased in scope and intensity as an effort to solve the growing number of environmental problems and the rapid depletion of domestic energy and mineral resources. Many new materials were investigated including urban refuse, manufacturing, industrial wastes, and stockyard wastes. The objective was to promote maximum recycling as the most practical answer to problems of waste disposal, pollution control, and the short supply of minerals and energy. The new research projects ranged from the conversion of animal manure and other organics to oil, to the recovery of precious and common metals from demolished aircraft and electronic scrap. This profile includes brief descriptions of many selected research projects that typify, the total spectrum of Bureau of Mines research in the important field of resource recovery.

"Iron aluminides hold great promise for intermediate temperature applications (to ~ 600°C) because of their excellent oxidation and sulphidation resistance and good strength. However, they have poor low temperature ductility, a feature which is exacerbated by water-containing environments. This paper presents an overview of the effects of environment on the ductility of iron aluminides, including the effects of iron aluminum ratio; ternary alloying additions, particularly boron; strain rate; and temperature. The mechanisms involved in water-induced embrittlement are discussed.IntroductionOver the last few years, it has became increasingly evident that the ductility and fracture toughness of many intermetallic compounds, particularly aluminides, are reduced dramatically if they are mechanically tested in either air or in hydrogen-containing atmospheres (1-5). For FeAI and Fe3AI, it has been shown that water vapor, for example in air at room temperature, can form atomic hydrogen by reacting with the Al atoms (1, 2). As a result in iron aluminides, the environmental embrittlement process is quite similar to traditional hydrogen embrittlement. This can be easily demonstrated by either testing an iron aluminide in an environment free of the deleterious species or by testing at high strain rates, both of which result in greater ductility. The purpose of this paper is to review recent progress in understanding environmental embrittlement in FeAI and Fe3AI, and to consider possible environmental embrittlement mechanisms. Greater understanding of this phenomenon will lead ultimately to remedies to this problem which is a major reason for preventing the practical application of these materials. Hydraulic cutting tests made on samples of Pennsylvania anthracite (3,700 psi and 260 gpm) were promising enough for the Bureau to establish a full scale experiment in an anthracite mine. Water pressure and quantity for mining anthracite were arbitrarily established at 5,000 psi and 300 gpm (1,000 hp). For full-volume flow, hydraulic pressure is controlled by orifice size with the displacement pump. The hydraulic jumbo was designed for maneuvering on pitches from 0° to 20° in any direction and for a coalbed ranging in thickness from 10 feet 6 inches to 15 feet. All motions of the jumbo are by oil hydraulics. Jet flow is controlled (start-stop) at the face, through an interlocked pushbutton system. One button is in the operator's cab; one, at the pump station; and one (a safety shutoff), near the mining face. To December 1962, 7,400 tons of bed material had been mined at an average rate of 0.800 ton per minute, with an average power requirement of 14.125 kilowatt-hours per ton. In January 1963, the objective was changed from an engineering-development basis to a research basis--to determine, ultimately, the most efficient level of operating characteristics for maximum response, as measured by mining-out rate. This research phase of the project is not yet complete, but conclusions, and the method of arriving at them, will be made the subject of another Bureau publication. It should be noted that as of December 1963 nearly 13,000 tons of bed material had been mined, at rates as high as 1. 3 tons per minute for a complete face advance.
