Raise drilling (or raise boring) is not a new technology or methodology. The first raise drilling machine was developed by The Robbins Company (TRC) of the USA in 1962. TRC manufactured the first tunnel boring machine (TBM) in 1952 and Jim Robbins, the founder of the company wanted to ‘turn the TBM concept on its head’ so to speak.Many improvements have ensued in the 50 years since the first machine. Such improvements include advances in the drill rod and thread design, cutters and reaming heads. Raise boring would not have been possible without the development of the tungsten carbide insert cutters and there have been big advances in both the carbide technology and in the mechanical design of the cutters.Over time mines have developed deeper with a greater use of diesel equipment resulting in greater ventilation requirements. This in turn means larger and deeper ventilation shafts. There have also been improvements in directional drilling techniques. This all combines with the need and ability to construct larger shafts using the safe method of raise drilling. With suitable geotechnical conditions the RBR900VF is capable of drilling shafts to a diameter and depth of greater than 8 m and 2000 m respectively. Greater diameters are possible over shorter lengths with suitable ground conditions.The RBR900VF was designed and manufactured to specifications developed by Macmahon. This machine has the greatest thrust and torque capability of any machine in the world. It enables cutters to be more heavily loaded in the larger diameter heads and this is essential for efficient rock excavation. Additional features of the new machine include minimal manual handling to provide a safer working environment and higher strength steel for the drill rods providing additional safety margin.CITATION:Wood, R J, 2014. Global annual gold production has been remarkably constant over the last decade at ~2500 t/a3. The major producers today are China (annual production over 350 t and rising), Australia (250 t), USA (240 t), Russia (200 t) and South Africa (190 t and falling); these figures are representative of recent years but approximate. Demand from jewellery, investment, industrial and dental uses has been in excess of mine production for the last decade, by approximately 1000 t/a.Ongoing exploration is the life-blood for gold mining, and more so than for many other metals. Explorers consider sovereign risk, security, labour costs, commercial terms, land availability and inherent geologic prospectivity to determine where to focus their activities. Exploration success over the last decade has been shared by established major producers like Australia, Canada and USA, several countries in West Africa, and many parts of the Pacific margin. Although gold-only deposits have dominated world gold production historically, the gold-plus types, especially copper-gold, are becoming more important.Australia experienced a major period of exploration success from 1979 that has led to annual gold production rising from 17 t in 1979 to 250 - 300 t/a recently. Today, Australia has economic demonstrated resources of over 9000 t Au, which has risen progressively from 220 t in 1979. The majority of production has come from gold-only deposits in the Yilgarn craton in the southern half of Western Australia, but there are a few large Proterozoic deposits in central Australia including Olympic Dam, Telfer and Starra, which are mostly gold-plus types with copper and gold. Large goldfields in the younger host rocks of eastern Australia include the gold-only deposits of Victoria and North Queensland, and gold-plus deposits of New South Wales.CITATION:Phillips, G N, 2013. "The collection efficiency of dust particles was determined in a laboratory dust chamber equipped with a water spray. Measurements were made in the presence of selected nonionic, cationic and anionic surfactants. For the nonionic and the anionic reagents, efficiency was maximum in a narrow range of concentration. The surfactant concentration corresponding to high collection efficiency was usually much below the commonly used concentration of l "", however. In comparison, much higher collection efficiency was observed for a cationic surfactant at extremely low concentrations. For delineating the mechanism of capture of dust particles, surface tension and contact angle results were used to obtain a correlation between the work of adhesion and the efficiency of collection. Such a correlation was reasonable for the nonionic surfactants but not for charged surfactants. In the latter case, electrostatic interactions between charged droplets and particles were more important, especially for the cationic reagent. INTRODUCTIONSeveral methods are used to control dust in mines. These include: ventilation, foam, scrubbers and sprays. This article is concerned with improving the effectiveness of water sprays, which are widely used to remove dust particles during continuous mining, by adding small quantities of surfactants. Water sprays produce small droplets which act as collectors of dust particles suspended in air. Sprays directed at the actual source of dust have the additional property of wetting the coal before the ·particles become airborne (Hamilton, 1974). Wetting agents, also called surfactants, arc known to play an important role in many applications where dust is a problem. However, conflicting reports exist in the literature with regard to the effectiveness of surfactants in water sprays (for a review, see Chander et al., 1988). In spite of the conflicting reports, the use of surfactants for dust control has increased over the years. In a recent study by the Bureau of Mines, a 27'6 reduction in respirable dust levels was observed in a mine test when surfactants were added to sprays (Foley, 1991)."

"IntroductionDuring and since• the war, it has been my privilege to work closely with those in Canada who are responsible for the vital raw materials needed in our co-operative atomic energy programme. The understanding which has developed between our two groups in this all-important enterprise has been a great source of pleasure. We in the United States are aware of the importance of the contribution made by Canada to this project, and we look forward to continuing our mutually advantageous relationship.The impact of World War II, and the decision by Canada, Great Britain, and the United States to join in a programme for the development of atomic weapons, created a sudden and immense demand for uranium minerals. Early in the raw materials programme, it was evident that sufficient raw materials to fulfill war-time atomic weapon requirements could be secured from three sources: the rich pitchblende deposits of the Eldorado , mine at Great Bear lake; the Shinkolobwe mine in the Belgian Congo; and as a by-product of the vanadium industry of the Colorado Plateau in the United States. In the early part of the programme, therefore, our joint efforts were directed toward obtaining immediate maximum production from these localities. The contribution made by Eldorado Mining and Refining (1944), Limited, both in supplying and refining raw materials, was and continues to be of vital importance.In addition, it was also obvious from the first that in this programme, as in any mining enterprise, exploration activities directed•toward the discovery and development of new sources of uranium ore were essential if production were to be maintained over an extended period of time. In order to satisfy obvious security requirements during the war, it was necessary to proceed with this exploration programme, both in Canada and the United States, as secretly as possible. With the end of the war, and the revelation that an atomic weapon had been developed, however, secrecy in exploration was no longer required. The important thing was to get on with a broadened exploration programme."

The Hyuga smelter has been producing ferronickel by a rotary kiln-electric furnace process in Miyazaki, Japan. Several approaches to improve our operation have decreased the electrical energy consumption. A new process was developed to decrease the cost of energy even further. Oil and technical oxygen are injected through lances to heat up the calcined ores (calcine) instead of the electric power. Main problems during the development of the process were the short life of the water-cooled lances, the check on security of the safety system and the eruption of combustion gases through the calcine bed. These problems have now been overcome successfully, and stable operation can be maintained. The addition of 1 Litre of heavy oil per tonne of ore can save the electrical energy requirement by 8.6 kwh per tonne of ore. The new process has resulted in a reduction of the electrical energy consumption by more than 10 percent

"Moorhouse is founded on what at the time of construction were the deepest base grouted piles ever installed in London, specifically designed to accommodate settlement from the proposed development of Crossrail. This paper describes design and construction issues associated with this project with special emphasis on the construction aspects of installing these piles in a heavily congested site in Central London.INTRODUCTIONConstruction of the deepest base grouted bored piles in a congested site in Central London in 2002 posed a number of design and construction problems. To add to the complication, the new structure's footprint is within the safeguarded zone of the proposed new cross London rail link, Crossrail. Therefore the piles were required to be designed to allow for the effects of construction of the proposed Crossrail's tunnels and a new station at Moorgate. The design and construction issues associated with this project are described in this paper and methods used to address such issues are presented.MOORHOUSE DEVELOPMENTThe new nineteen storey high Moorhouse building was commissioned by Moor House Limited Partnership and will form another new Central London landmark building by the British architect Foster and Partners. Two of the four facades feature complex geometry to fulfill the city's planning requirements. The building is a steel frame structure stabilised by a reinforced concrete core. Floor plates span between the core and the perimeter with two rows of internal columns.The complex geometry of the superstructure requires a diagonal ""bandolier"" to transfer floor loads to certain perimeter columns. Another salient feature of the superstructure is the ribs that are provided to act as sloping columns to carry the loads down to the foundations."

"AS THE TITLE implies, this paper will deal with the unusual rather than the standard practices as employed . at the property of North Rankin Nickel Mines, Limited. Fortunately •the mining, with the exception of permafrost conditions, and the milling practices, are the normal approaches dictated by the size, type, and character of the orebody. The unusual aspects are linked directly or indirectly to the isolated location and are •principally ancillary requirements or services covering a broad range from climate to supplies and from finance to entertainment. It is our intent to cover the more salient points of interest together with a brief description of the general operation.To understand the primary motivation of the mine, it must be made clear that North Rankin was conceived as a foothold in the Canadian North, that region embracing 40 per cent of the Dominion which ex-tends north of the commercial tree-line and which includes nearly 50 per cent of the Precambrian Shield, our mainstay of Canadian mining. Secondly, this project was born in an atmosphere of premium sales in the nickel markets, assuring a rapid pay-back of the heavy •capital expenditures. And finally, it has •been coddled through the stark reality of a competitive metal market with the hope and trust that the experiences and achievements will lead over the bill to a bigger and better mine in this virgin territory. This is the briefest story of the mine's history, but it pays tribute to the many people who, in thirty years since .discovery, have championed this project."

Establishing a robust geotechnical instrumentation and construction monitoring plan is one of the keys to the successful delivery of the world’s largest soft-ground bored tunnel in Seattle, Washington. The paper describes and provides a return of experience on current and best practice for monitoring tunnelling projects in urban areas. The owner’s contractual approach is discussed to highlight the flexibility of the design-built contract in achieving equal or better solutions by allowing for the use of innovative technics. Special attention is given to the management and involvement of third parties (building owners, utility owners), including the public, to overcome all challenges faced during the installation of the monitoring system in downtown Seattle for over 1000 instruments. Petro-diesel is a common collector for fine coal froth flotation but partitioning of diesel range organics (DROs) in process streams has not been widely studied. Preliminary research suggested that under normal dosing schemes total residual DRO in process waters should be limited to the sub-ppm water-soluble fraction (WSF). Further, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) should partition proportionately with DRO. The purpose of this study was to confirm these findings in laboratory flotation tests. Total DRO and specific PAHs were measured in tailings and concentrate streams, and coal recovery and ash rejection were tracked. Results show that concentrate waters consistently had higher DRO than tailing waters, and DRO in both streams generally increased with increasing diesel dosage. DRO again appeared to be limited to the WSF and PAHs tended to partition proportionately with DRO. Results indicate optimal flotation performance should generally coincide with minimal DRO partitioning to process waters. Under typical operating conditions residual DRO should not present an environmental concern; however, conditions should be avoided that allow significant overdosing of diesel.

This paper reflects on the author’s experience working in site-based technical and management roles over a 29 year period, and the past 12 years in internal and external consulting roles. It discusses the author’s experiences and observations of operations management, and the significant value of the technical specialist’s role in providing management with information on what to base tactical decisions, which may or may not be part of a defined strategy.The landscape of mine management changes with the cyclical nature of commodity prices driving operating and capital prudence, as operations change their focus from expansion and growth to staying in the game. The role of the mine manager and management team in navigating through these changing times, attitudes and stages of the project life can influence the success or otherwise of many projects.Technical knowledge is one of the key drivers in realising or destroying the value of a project or operation. As managers focus on people management, management systems and processes, recognising and understanding value in underlying technical knowledge, and getting back to the fundamentals/basics, can be overlooked. In reaction to the fluctuating commodity cycle, managers implement changes through optimisation, fast tracking or parallel streaming, expansion projects and changes in the application of technology. These responses occur against the background of changes in the appetite for risk, acceptance of project uncertainty and changes in personnel which result in a loss of knowledge and experience – often at critical times.This paper shares the author’s experiences and lessons learnt in dealing with and observing these issues. More than twenty years ago Sasol, ISCOR, and some parastatals played a major role in ensuring that South Africa had sufficient technical skills. When the economy became tight and business and government were pressurized to decrease costs, the first budgets that were reduced were the training budgets. It seemed to be too expensive and too time-consuming to train apprentices. According to Stacey2, this is a major strategic issue facing the mining industry in South Africa. Two factors added to the shortage of skills challenge: ? Skills erosion and job losses ? Artisans ? currently the economy produces 5 000 but the need is 12 500 ? Level of mechanization in South Africa less than 10 per cent ? Average age of operators and artisans is 50 ? Greater awareness of occupational health effects of hand-held drilling. ? Workplace challenges ? The impact of HIV/AIDS and other employee wellness issues ? Changes and challenges in workplace environment i.e. the mining industry.

"More than 85% of phosphorous reserves in China occur as middle-low grade phosphate of sedimentary origin. The main gangues are dolomite, quartz, silicates, and clays. The characteristics of minerals are finely disseminated. Flotation results have shown that the floatability of apatite of this kind of ore is much worse than that of igneous and metasedimentary origin because of its high specific surface area. Although some effective depressants, such as naphthalene sulfonate and phenanthrene sulfonate, are used to decrease the MgO content in the P2O5 concentrate, its presence is still high (about 2%) in the Chinese concentrates. Meanwhile, the wastewater may cause some environmental problems. Batch flotation results and measurements of specific surface area and CO3 2- have revealed that there is a relationship between the floatability of apatite and the surface area.A two-stage flotation flowsheet, which includes a combination of direct and reverse flotation, was developed for beneficiating sedimentary phosphate ores. The direct flotation was conducted in an alkaline medium and most of the apatite and carbonate minerals floated leaving quartz and siliceous gangue in the sink. In the reverse flotation circuit, the floated product was further beneficiated in an acidic medium to eliminate the carbonate as a float product. Apart from the high quality of concentrate, the two-stage flotation also facilitated the treatment and the recycling of wastewater. A wastewater recycling procedure was developed and tested in a continuous flotation process. The key factor was the careful selection of effective and non-toxic reagents."

"Geomechanical reservoir modeling offers a valuable tool to predict tectonic stresses, in particular the local perturbations in orientation and/or magnitude which occur at lithological boundaries and faults. The paper presents a workflow for building and calibrating such geomechanical models. The numerical simulations are based on the Finite Element method and can range from field-scale models to smaller, highly detailed submodels of specific fault blocks. The approach considers the reservoir-specific characteristics with respect to subsurface geometry (lithostratigraphic boundaries, faults), mechanical properties and ambient stress field. During the subsequent calibration stage calculated stresses are compared to stress data actually observed in borehole data. Poorly constrained input parameters are iteratively modified within reasonable limits until a satisfactory fit between calculated and measured stresses is achieved. This validated model can then be used for stress predictions between wells and in undrilled parts of the reservoir, respectively. The workflow is applied to two case studies - a large gas field in Northern Germany and a CO2 sequestration project in Australia – to test and illustrate its practical value. INTRODUCTIONDetailed knowledge of the tectonic stress field is crucial for the optimal exploration and use not only of conventional and unconventional hydrocarbon reservoirs, but also for deep geothermal reservoirs, carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects as well as underground mining and nuclear waste repositories. Any reliable stress prediction is hindered by the observation that the magnitude and orientation of the stress field can vary significantly – not only in time, but also in space. Such spatial stress variations comprise all scales, i.e., from the scale of lithospheric plates down to the grain-scale. On the reservoir- and fault blockscale, the local stress field can be influenced by faults and different mechanical properties of lithologies (Sassi & Faure, 1997). The resulting variations in stress magnitude and/or stress orientation are commonly referred to as stress perturbations and give rise to a unique, reservoir-specific stress pattern (Yale, 2003). Thereby, local stress fields can deviate by up to 90° in orientation and several tenth of Megapascal (MPa) in magnitude from regional trends."

"Biodegradation of sodium isopropyl xanthate using two types of bacterial strains, Paenibacillus polymyxa and Pseudomonas putida, is demonstrated. At concentrations higher than 50 mg/L, the presence of xanthate in the growth medium resulted in bacterial toxicity, retarding growth kinetics. Adaptation through serial subculturing in the presence of higher xanthate concentrations resulted in the development of xanthate-tolerant bacterial strains. Stress proteins secreted by bacterial cells grown in the presence of xanthate were isolated. Bacterial cells could utilize xanthate as a growth substrate, degrading xanthate species in the process. Acidic metabolic products generated by bacterial metabolism promoted efficient xanthate decomposition. Probable mechanisms for the biodegradation of isopropyl xanthate are illustrated.IntroductionDifferent types of alkyl xanthates (ethyl, isopropyl, amyl, etc.) have been used as flotation collectors in the concentration of sulfidic ores for several decades. Large quantities of waste water and xanthate-containing effluents are generated by ore flotation processes, posing considerable environmental challenges. Billions of cubic meters of such process waste waters are produced annually across the world, most of which are discharged to the environment, often without any treatment. Leakages and accidental release of xanthate reagents from manufacturing plants and during transportation and storage can also contaminate the environment. Residual concentrations of xanthate reagents are encountered in waste effluent, which are found to be toxic to aquatic life and unfit for human consumption (Harris, 1984; Okibe and Johnson, 2002). Further, direct recycling of such waste waters for plant operations can compromise water quality standards required for process operations. The presence of residual xanthate in recycled waters from flotation plants deleteriously influences flotation processes. Xanthate can be easily decomposed at low pH values; however, CS2, which is more toxic, will be produced by the acidification of neutral and mildly alkaline xanthate-containing solutions. Physico-chemical methods such as flocculation, chemical oxidation and decomposition and physical adsorption used to remove residual collector reagents from mill process waters are often expensive and not environment-friendly (Oliveira and Rubio, 2009; Cheng et al., 2012; Molina et al., 2013,)."

MIM Holdings Limited has acquired a reputation for the successful application of R&D to develop break-through technologies for the mining industry. The Isa Process tank-house technology has been licensed to copper refineries throughout the world, and almost 40 per cent of the worldÆs copper is refined using this technology. Isasmelt copper and lead smelting technology is either in use, or is currently being installed, by eight companies in eight countries around the world. Jameson Cell technology is widely used in the coal mining industry and increasingly in the base-metal industry. The IsaMills developed at Mount Isa and McArthur River made it possible to develop the McArthur River and George Fisher orebodies. This paper will address the need for innovation and then discuss the development of the IsaMill and Isasmelt technologies. It will conclude with some comments about why MIM has been so successful in developing such technologies.

"Revision surgery to replace joints in the human body requires materials that are strong, long-lasting, and biocompatible. Metallic implants made of cobalt-chromium-molybdenum alloys are already popular because of their proven corrosion and wear resistance properties, but there is an on-going effort to economically improve their performance. Alloying with inert nitrogen can enhance the mechanical properties of the alloy, enhance its corrosion resistance, and elevate the temperature at which the metallic implants can be thermally treated, without increasing the threat to the human body. The current work has produced a high-nitrogen Co-Cr-Mo alloy through HIP consolidation of metal powders that have undergone nitriding in a mechanically fluidized bed. The already fine microstructure of the powders combined with the increased nitrogen content resulted in significant property gains in the consolidated materials.IntroductionMetallic implants made of cobalt-chromium-molybdenum alloys are already popular because of their proven corrosion and wear resistance properties, but there is an ongoing effort to improve their performance. Research on a Stellite 21 cobalt-chromiummolybdenum alloy has shown that nitrogen alloying can be desirable from several standpoints [l]. Firstly, it has indicated that nitrogen can enhance the mechanical properties of the alloy, which could allow more demanding implant designs. The same work also demonstrated that nitrogen can elevate the temperature at which the metallic implants can be thermally treated, which is desirable in situations in which surface textures are to be sintered to the implant to enhance its fixation properties. Finally, that research work discovered that, not only does nitrogen not harm the corrosion resistance of the cobalt-chromium-molybdenum alloys, but it may in fact enhance it. Combining this with the fact that small amounts of nitrogen are not considered a threat to the human body, makes nitrogen alloying an attractive alternative for enhancing the properties of Co-Cr-Mo."

"A hybrid Deep Mixing (DM) shoring system was recently constructed for a high-rise development in downtown Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada for the temporary support of a five-level basement excavation. The site is bounded by an existing bridge off-ramp structure along its longest side and by city streets on the other two sides, which formed a truncated triangle in plan. A conventional secant pile wall was installed along the longest side, about 380 ft (116 m) in length, of the site. Hybrid shoring walls (HSW) 1 and 2 were installed along two shorter sides with each being 235 to 246 ft (72 to 75 m) long. HSW 3 completed the excavation support system along the shortest side with a length of about 55 ft (17 m). Cutter soil mixing (CSM) was proposed by the excavation and shoring design-build team in lieu of conventional secant piling. CSM was the preferred method to construct the infill panels between soldier piles because of the speed at which the shoring system could be constructed in the variable fill, peat, wood waste and overburden. Design ConsiderationsTo minimize the impact on buried utilities along the outside perimeter of the excavation, the temporary shoring was designed to limit the lateral displacements to less than 0.8 in (20 mm). Factors taken into consideration for shoring design included the lateral earth pressures from the fill and native soils, groundwater pressures, temporary construction loads (e.g., crane or heavy plant/equipment), and permanent structural requirements. The subsurface conditions at this site typically consisted of fill (cohesive and granular), overlying peat and/or wood waste, overlying clayey silt to sandy silt, overlying weathered to dense to very dense clayey silt till to sandy silt till with silt layers. Localized, perched groundwater was observed within the fill, peat, wood waste and sandy silt layers above the dense till."

WHEN the price of crude oil was advanced on July 26, 1928, with some 4,000,000 bbl. daily of potential production shut in under proration regulations, and with as much more new production shortly available from semi-proved undrilled reserves, students of the oil industry were made to realize that a new order of things now prevailed in petroleum economics. A new interpretation of the law of supply and demand had taken the place of the archaic method of influencing current production by changing crude price levels. Proration had caused the change. The long period of over-production just experienced, the prospects of a potential over-supply far into the future, had set up certain forces which brought about some fundamental changes. Their cause, effect and future influence can best be developed by a detailed study of the history of the period since war-time regulation

Miami Oölite limestone is the only significant construction mineral in southeastern Florida. Its source area coincides with that of rapid urban expansion. Two-thirds of the existing resource is already unavailable because of development. Land-use conflicts place future availability of limestone in jeopardy. However, a sufficient limestone resource to meet demand for many years is present if its extraction is not restricted. Adverse environmental effects of quarrying Miami Oölite are not severe; land values often increase following quarrying. Future availability depends upon--(l) achieving uniformity of Federal, State, county, and municipality statutory requirements governing quarry operations; (2) setting aside specific land areas for future quarrying; and (3) cooperative planning to provide for land utilization upon completion of quarrying.

El petrodiesel es un colector común para la flotación de carbón, pero la partición de compuestos orgánicos de diesel (DRO por sus siglas en inglés) en corrientes de proceso no ha sido ampliamente estudiada. Investigaciones preliminares sugieren que bajo esquemas de dosificación normales los contenidos residuales totales de DRO en aguas de procesos deben estar limitados a la fracción soluble en agua (WSF por sus siglas en inglés) sub-ppm. Es más, los hidrocarburos aromáticos poli-cíclicos (PAH por sus siglas en inglés) debería segmentarse de manera proporcional con los compuestos orgánicos de diesel (DRO). El propósito de este estudio fue confirmar estos resultados en pruebas de flotación realizadas en laboratorio. Se midieron los contenidos totales de DRO Y PAH en aguas asociadas con los flujos o corrientes de concentrados y relaves. Los resultados muestran que las aguas con concentrados tenían de manera consistente mayores cantidades de DRO que las aguas de relaves. Es más, los contenidos de DRO en ambos flujos generalmente se incrementaban con el aumento de la dosis de diesel. De acuerdo con la investigación preliminar, los DRO parecían estar limitados a la fracción soluble en agua (WSF) y los PAH tendían a segmentarse proporcionalmente con los DRO. Bajo condiciones de operación típicas, los DRO residuales no deberían representar una preocupación medioambiental, pero deben evitarse situaciones que permitan una sobredosis significativa de diesel.
