A laboratory study was conducted on continuous precipitation of copper, cadmium, mercury and arsenic using thiourea, thioacetamide, sodium sulfide and ammonium sulfide as precipitating agents. Depending on the experimental conditions the metals precipitate with the sulfide donors at different orders and rates. These differences were employed as a basis of several techniques for continuous separation of copper and arsenic, cadmium and arsenic, mercury and copper, and copper, mercury and arsenic. The separation of the metals from industrial waste solutions was also studied. The precipitates obtained were inspected using x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, atomic absorption spectrometer and plasma particle counter.

Refractory copper ores (CROs) in central Africa contain copper minerals that are locked up in a micacious solid matrix or associated with carbonate, sulfide and phosphate minerals. Several researchers have reported that the recovery of copper from CRO material by an acid-leaching process is not economically feasible, due to the presence of excess gangue-acid-consuming minerals such as calcites, dolomite, asbolane and iron oxides. Since the proportion of acid-insoluble copper (CuS) is about 28% of total copper and total free sulfur is extremely small, sulfide flotation was considered unfavorable. Consequently, hundreds of millions of tons of CRO material have been stockpiled specifically at the Nchanga Mine of Zambia. In terms of copper distribution in CRO material, a significant portion of total copper exists as carbonates (39%) and oxides (17%), while 28% of the copper is acid-insoluble (CuS). The rest of the copper is in the form of carbonates (16%) and (hydr) oxides (17%). This means that only about 72% of total copper is recoverable through the non-oxidative acid-leaching process. In this study, batch leach tests were performed on CRO solids (d95 = 95%) to establish the gangue acid consumption values at different feed pH values and to evaluate the leaching characteristics of copper, manganese and iron within the CRO material. Subsequently, continuous leach tests were performed on CRO solids (106 um, 80% passing) using optimum leach conditions derived from batch tests. This paper aims to show that sustainable copper recovery can be achieved by selecting leaching conditions whereby gangue acid consumption (GAC) values become significantly small and the final concentration of manganese and iron in the leach solution are appreciably low.

An economic block cave is dependent to the characteristics of the rock mass at stages of caving. These are cave initiation, propagation and ore flow. In this research, the rock engineering system (RES), first established by Hudson (1992) to solve complex rock engineering problems, is introduced and verified against the well-established caving parameters established by Laubscher. There are two types of factors influencing caving and these are natural (cannot be controlled) and induced (operator controlled). A RES based interaction matrix is developed by determining the rating parameters required to reproduce the caving database using Laubscher’s caving parameters. This provides the relative importance of the parameters in the interaction matrix. After discussing the rock mass caving process and identifying all the effective parameters, an interaction matrix is introduced to study the cave initiation of rock masses. The expert-semi-quantitative (ESQ) coding method is utilised to assign the numerical value to each parameter’s interaction. Thereafter, the interaction intensity and dominance of each factor in the system is determined to classify these factors. Finally, all the parameters affecting caving operation and their weights on the RES system are identified. This new application of RES in block caving is very efficient and useful for any stage of caving studies and helps experts to make decisions more accurately.CITATION:Mohammad Khani, M, 2016. Fracture Network Engineering (FNE) is the engineering design of rock mass disturbance through the use of advanced techniques to model fractured rock masses numerically, and then correlate field observations with simulated fractures generated within the models. Microseismic (MS) monitoring is a standard tool for evaluating the geometry and evolution of the fracture network induced during a hydraulic treatment, principally by source locating MS hypocenters and visualizing these with respect to the treatment volume and infrastructure (Figure 1). The integrated use of Synthetic Rock Mass (SRM) modeling of the hydrofracturing with Enhanced Microseismic Analysis (EMA) provides a feedback loop in which the SRM is constrained by the information provided by the MS data and the in-situ behavior of the fracture network is better understood, leading to informed decisions on future field operations. This paper discusses the technologies used in FNE and some of the developmental challenges we face in order to provide a more efficient and robust application of the approach. One particular challenge is the accurate representation of MS source data within the models (locations, magnitudes and mechanisms), and the ability to correlate these data effectively with field results. This challenge is being overcome by the development of more efficient numerical modeling algorithms, providing simulations in three dimensions at reservoir scale, combined with validation of these algorithms using laboratory and field case studies.

The Doc Run Company and its predecessors have been mining for over 130 years utilising the room and pillar mining method. This method has left approximately 20 per cent of the orebody in the remaining pillars. The original design and planning for the mines did not include extensive pillar extraction. This paper summarises the introduction of the pillar extraction and backfill techniques which have been implemented since 1991. These techniques include the use of low cost fill walls up to 20 in in height and the use of stinger trucks for topping off the fill. In conjunction with these accomplishments, much experience and confidence has been gained in the use of numerical modelling as a method of predicting pillar stability as the mining of pillars progresses. These advances have led to pillar extraction hecoming a major portion of the overall production and have added to the mine life of Doe Run's six operating mines.

Asbestos analysis is conceptually simple. The objective, in most environmental analyses, is to determine the number of asbestos fibers per unit area or volume in a sample. The sample may be a consumer product, an ambient air sample, or a water sample. This determination is complicated by several factors including sample collection and preparation, counting techniques, and the operational definition of asbestos in use. Three different definitions have been used in the study of environmental samples; these are summarized in Table 1. [ ]

Gwalia gold mine is located close to the town of Leonora in the Goldfields region of Western Australia, some 830 km from Perth. The mine is wholly owned by St Barbara Ltd, an Australian Securities Exchange listed gold producer and explorer. The Gwalia mine is a deep, all-trucking mine and is serviced by a 10 km long decline from surface. Mining is currently 1540 m below surface. Reserves extend to 1820 m below surface and are open at depth. The mine produces in excess of 200 koz of gold per annum.The Leonora area is hot and arid, with a mean annual rainfall of 230 mm and a 95 per cent mean daily maximum temperature of 20.3°C wet-bulb and 35.6°C dry-bulb.The primary ventilation system comprises a 490 kg/s surface exhaust fan, which draws air down a parallel intake system consisting of the decline, and a dedicated fresh-air intake system extending to the bottom of the production zone. Cooling is provided via a surface bulk air cooler serviced by an ammonia refrigeration plant that delivers 150 kg/s of chilled water to the bulk air cooler.The refrigeration plant and bulk air cooler were installed in 2008. The design allows cooling to be increased over time by installing an additional refrigeration plant in a lead lag configuration with the current refrigeration plant when required.Since 2008, expansion and increased depth reached a point where the underground heat load exceeded the installed capacity of the existing 4.0 megawatt rated (MWR) refrigeration plant. In order to maintain the mine design conditions underground, upgrading of the existing refrigeration system was required to bring the cooling capacity to 7.5 MWR.Two expansion options were considered: the addition of an ammonia vapour-compression refrigeration machine similar to the existing one or a lithium bromide absorption refrigeration system using waste heat from the site power station. The original design and layout of equipment on-site meant that either could be used, allowing an assessment of the merits of both when additional cooling was required.The decision was made to install a lithium bromide absorption system on the lead side of the existing ammonia refrigeration plant. INTRODUCTION THE deleterious effect of stress raisers or notches on the resistance to fatigue of machine components, and other parts subjected to repeated dynamic loading, has been well known for many years. Most engineers in the mechanical field have, at one time or another, encountered a shaft which fractured due to a poor transition fillet, a holding-down bolt which failed due to insufficient tightening or inferior thread form, or a fitted member which broke through a combination of fretting corrosion and clamping stresses. All of these are examples of the damaging influence exerted by stress raisers in fatigue. Other common forms of stress raiser which have taken their toll of dynamic components are: keyways, oil holes, splines, quenching oil grinding cracks, tool marks, and sharp changes in section; some are the result of the design, others of poor execution of the design. It is our experience in the Mines Branch1 and I feel sure this will be corroborated by other fatigue investigators, that the majority of failures are due to incorrect design or faulty preparation of the part concerned, rather than to the use of inferior material. Quite frequently, it is true that the operating conditions necessitate the presence of a 'notch', but even in such cases methods are generally available by which its adverse effect on the life of the component can be reduced or annulled. The purpose of this paper is to discuss a few typical stress raisers, and to provide information on various processes for mitigating their effects in fatigue.

"This paper was primarily put together in order to demonstrate what are believed to be acceptablestandards, in relation to ventilation surveys and the subsequent model assembly process. Thiswas brought about by the fact that in many parts of the world it is regarded as acceptable to carryout ventilation surveys and then build and supply the client with a æstick fi gureÆ type ventilationmodel. Such stick models have arguably litt le use and a very short life span in the real world and isalmost impossible for site staff to maintain. Thankfully most underground coal mines in Australia strive to maintain a true replica model of their ventilation circuits and to keep them in a relatively good state. Given that these mines own and maintain the models, it is often seen as necessary to update or rebuild them. The level of survey detail required to do so is totally dependent on the end use of the data and the criticality of the accuracy of the data set, to the ongoing safety and viability of the business. Mine technical personnel should think clearly about the use and importance of the ventilation survey and subsequent report outputs required that will help them bett er understand their mines and bett er prepare them to manage their ventilation circuits, on an ongoing basis. This paper provides some guidance for Australian ventilation engineers so they may plan and execute this work æin houseÆ, should they rightly choose to do so. To this end, methods of data collection and circuit analysis required for surveys of a high order of accuracy are detailed. Also, some of the issues which are important when formulating a strategy to carry out the appropriate ventilation survey for the required purpose are summarised. As well, the major details that should be furnished within any survey and some survey/report outputs and/or omissions, which are clearly not acceptable, are highlighted."

The design of support for underground excavations is a complex process in which the interaction between supports and the rock mass must be evaluated. The strength reduction method (SRM) is useful because it provides a stability factor of the supported excavation that can easily be compared between support alternatives. The method is based on numerical model analysis where the stability factor is determined by reducing the rock mass strength until collapse is indicated in the model. This paper presents the results of validation studies that were conducted using the FLAC3D stress analysis software to compare SRMcalculated stability factors to the empirically based Coal Mine Roof Rating (CMRR) and the Analysis of Roof Bolt Systems (ARBS). The objective was to determine whether the SRM, with its basis in mechanics, would predict similar outcomes as the fundamentally different ARBS and CMRR methods with their basis in empirical observations. A total of 450 different scenarios were evaluated in which the geology, horizontal stress, depth of cover, entry width, support spacing, and support length were varied. The results showed that the SRM-calculated stability factors were able to satisfactorily capture both the ?weak bed? and ?strong bed? adjustments in the CMRR. The SRM results were found to be well correlated to the ARBS stability factors for the 450 cases considered. Further analysis showed that the SRM accurately captures the effect of bolt length, depth of cover, and entry width on the overall stability of an entry.

"Even with the cyclic nature of mining, when it comes down to it, the bottom line is that whatever direction the commodity market is going there is always a desire to improve the economics of an operation in order to deliver a greater return to investors. Adapting to market pressures by introduction of an operational process change can often have a downstream impact. What may be less obvious is that reconciliation can play an important part in measuring the effectiveness of many operational changes. Through the adoption of best practice reconciliation and related comparisons, it is possible to measure the impact of changes across the mine value chain and identify variability that may have been introduced. Using analytical business improvement tools, examining and monitoring planned changes can be crucial in understanding whether the introduced changes have been effective and whether they have provided the expected result. "Noranda has successfully developed and implemented two leading-edge mineral exploration technologies — hyperspectral remote sensing and 3-D seismic surveying. Airborne hyperspectral imaging provides detailed geological and mineralogical mapping capability at both a regional and project scale that facilitates improved selection of prospective terrain and an accelerated exploration cycle. Noranda, in partnership with Falconbridge, has licensed the exclusive use of the Earth Search Sciences Inc. (ESSI) Probe-1 hyperspectral scanners (128- channel, 0.43 µm to 2.5 µm spectral range) that are capable of mapping in excess of 3500 km2 per day at 10 m pixel resolution. The technology has been successfully deployed on four continents over a broad range of terrain from desert to boreal forest and the high Arctic.To augment the company’s deep search initiatives, Noranda has successfully modified and implemented existing 3-D seismic technology to help targeting massive sulphides located at depths ranging from 500 m to 2000 m. In the fall of 1998 and early 1999, Noranda completed an 18 km2, 3-D seismic program in eastern Canada by successfully drill testing acoustic impedance anomalies locating massive sulphides at depths in excess of 1100 m."

The mining industry, both here and internationally, is continually developing increasingly sophisticated software to compute mineral resource estimates, but these processes cannot compensate for a flawed geological interpretation of the geology of the economic commodity(s) concentrations. Quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) is becoming increasingly common in association with the sampling and assaying practices within the industry. However, it is rare in the case of a geological interpretation associated with mineral resource estimation. Why? In the context of this paper, QA/QC relates to the use of statistical and graphical tools to show that the geological economic commodity concentrations have been appropriately domained. Domaining is essential to improve the chance of getting a mineral resource estimate right. Commodity value and acceptable concentration variation within a mineral resource can be ingredients that make mineral resource estimation difficult to get right. But it is possible to get it right a very high proportion of the time. It is more likely to occur when inappropriate data consolidation is minimised. In any case, inappropriate data consolidation is significantly reduced when the geological interpretation is strongly consistent with the data and it is demonstrable. To achieve quality global estimates of geological domain concentrations, it is essential that the geology of the prospect is understood sufficiently that the deposit is appropriately domained. Appropriate domaining occurs when sample populations are separated in such a way that only data in harmony with each other within the population contributes to the domainÆs concentration estimate. The paper will use four brief case studies to illustrate how QA/QC can be used to display data and validate the underpinning geological interpretation through its associated domaining to get it right when it comes to a mineral resource estimation.

In this U.S. Bureau of Mines report, the conditions required for the direct reconstruction of a tomogram from observed line integrals are examined. Because of the limited access to the working faces in coal mines, the special case of access to only two opposite faces is emphasized. Classical matrix methods were used for small dimensional (2 by 2, 3 by 3, and 4 by 4) applications to determine the limitations and the requirements for a solution. The results for large (n by n) grids were then inferred and generalized from those of the smaller grids and matrices. Limited access tomography is found to be appropriate for in-seam hazard detection from seismic and microwave data, but it is shown that additional data must be added to obtain a direct solution.

New developments are taking place in the recovery of gold from leached pulps that are based upon the adsorption of the metal cyanide species onto ion exchange resins. Despite the success of several resin-in-pulp pilot plant operations in the Western World and large-scale plants in the former Soviet Union, the process is yet to gain recognition as a viable alternative to the carbon-in-pulp process. An experimental research program has investigated the use of a variety of different types of resins for the recovery of gold, but to-date no resin studied has the desired properties of high selective loading capacity for gold cyanide and a simple inexpensive elution procedure. In addition very little is known concerning the physical strength of resins and their ability to resist shattering due to osmotic shock during cycles of adsorption and elution. The ability of ion exchange resins to enhance the leaching of refractory and re-adsorbing ores has not been investigated. This paper highlights the necessary factors that need to be addressed before commercialisation of ion exchange technology for gold extraction is feasible.

A requisite corollary of mineral sand mining on North Stradbroake Island (Queensland (Qld), Australia) has been the progressive rehabilitation of post-mined lands for the revegetation of native subtropical Eucalypt communities. Since 2005, rigorous environmental monitoring has been undertaken to verify the annual development of post-rehabilitated sites. From these long-term analyses, a chronosequence of land revegetation (ranging from three to 26 years postrehabilitation) was developed to examine the rehabilitation trajectories of various post-mined sites in relation to proximal undisturbed locations. Here, we identified that some sites may be deviating from the intended natural analogues as evidenced by the opportunistic colonisationand otherwise æinvasiveÆ behaviour of a regionally native species (Black Sheoak - Allocasuarina littoralis), which appear to be displacing the intended Eucalypt varieties. Although it is recognised that the broader data trends correspond to distinct periods of adaptive modifications to the implementation of rehabilitation (ie pre- and post-1995), this analysis focuses on further identifying potential above- and belowground feedback mechanisms underlying these divergent ecological outcomes.CITATION:Audet, P, Gravina, A, Glenn, V, McKenna, P, Vickers, H, Gillespie, M J and Mulligan, D R, 2012. IN the year 1933, workings at the No. 12 colliery, New Waterford, of the Dominion Coal Company, Limited, had advanced to a point where additional ventilation would soon be required. Furthermore, development of the mine was being .made to practically double the output of coal. Consequently, authorization was given to sink a shaft to the workings. The location selected is on the west side of the mine, about one and a half miles from the slope mouth and on the Low Point shore, some 250 feet from high-water mark. The cliff at this point is 40 feet high, with the land rising on a slope of about 5 per cent to the shaft. Figure 1 shows the location with reference to the colliery workings. The strata through which the shaft was to be sunk were pretty well known from diamond-drill borings previously made, and it was believed that water would be encountered to a depth of at least 250 feet to 300 feet. It was planned, therefore, to seal-off the water by the pumping of cement grout under high pressure. This method was considered to be the most economical means of handling the water during sinking, and would also result in a permanently dry shaft. Figure 2 shows a cross-section of the strata. The permanent shaft hoist and fan were to be electrically driven, which would necessitate the construction of a transmission line between the colliery and the shaft; therefore, it was arranged that the sinking equipment would have electric drive. As all equipment, materials used in construction, and supplies were to be hauled by truck, a roadway 1,800 feet long was required from the main highway to the site, and as heavy loads would be hauled during the fall, winter, and succeeding spring, this road was ballasted with 18 inches of clinkered material obtained from a burned culm bank one and a half miles distant. Actual field work was begun by the Company's own forces early in October. Work preparatory to sinking-in addition to the roadway and trans-mission line-included the construction of the reinforced-concrete shaft collar and fan drift connection; the permanent timber headframe (which was to be used also as the sinking headframe); the permanent reinforced-concrete building to house the shaft hoist and fan drive; and the erection of temporary buildings and installation of all equipment for sinking and lining the shaft and for cementation.

Peirce-Smith converting (PSC) is applied for roughly 50% of primary nickel and 70% of primary copper production. PSC cycles produce batches of ironfree sulfide matte (or blister copper, in the case of copper smelters), that are subject to further processing. However, the number of cycles that can be performed simultaneously is limited by the offgas handling system. Moreover, PSC suffers from variation in the yield and duration of the cycles. This variation is managed by conventional smelter designs, in which the upstream smelting capacity exceeds the nominal converting capacity; PSC is thus a major bottleneck in conventional nickel and copper smelters. Stabilization and standardization of PSC operations can therefore increase smelter throughput. The current paper presents a discrete event simulation (DES) framework to assist in smelter debottlenecking. It features random number generation to represent cycle variability, and time-adaptive finite differences to represent thermochemical complexity. Preliminary computations are presented.

A method for destroying the caking properties of bituminous coal was developed by the Bureau of Mines. Coal is treated in a fixed bed by heating through its plastic range under controlled temperatures in mildly oxidative atmospheres composed of inert gas and/or steam containing about 1 volume-percent oxygen. High-volatile A (hvab) and high-volatile B (hvbb) and low-volatile bituminous (lvb) coals in the size range 1/8 to 1-1/2 inches were successfully treated at 0 (atmospheric pressure) to 300 psig in static beds 6 to 18 inches deep. Conditions of treatment depended on the coal and ranged from 80 to 200 minutes at 350° to 510° C. Char produced in this manner from hvab coal was gasified with steam at 800° C and 100 psig in a fixed bed in one series of tests and in other tests was exposed to hydrogen in a dilute co current free-falling-bed system at 750° C and 3,000 psig without agglomerating.

"The Endako molybdenum deposit is located 160 km west of Prince George, British Columbia. It occurs within the main body of the Francois Lake Intrusions, a composite batholith consisting of early, middle and late intrusive phases. The ore deposit is confined to Endako Quartz Monzonite, a middle phase intrusion, which is bound on the north by Carey Alaskite and on the south by Francois Granite, both late stage intrusions. In the mine aretz, the Endako Quartz Monzonite has been intruded by pre-ore dikes of quartzfeldspar porphyry and porphyritic granite, and by post-ore dikesof basalt.The Endako deposit forms a west-northwest trending body that has a strike length of 3360 m and an apparent width of 370 m. It consists of four structurally distinct zones: Endako East, Endako West, Denak East and Denak West. Principal sulphide minerals of the deposit are pyrite and molybdenite, accompanied by magnetite and minor chalcopyrite. Galena, associated with wulfenite and bismuthinite, occurs in some ores of Endako West and Denak as minute inclusions in molybdenite. The sulphides and associated minerals are hosted by quartz veins which occur principally in vein systems. Hydrothermal alteration accompanying ore mineralization has pervasively kaolinized the quartz monzonite host rock, and has locally produced K-feldspar and quartz-sericite-pyrite envelopes on quartz veins.Primary structural controls of the deposit are southwesterly dipping vein systems which strike 110° in the Endako zones, 110° to 130° in Denak East and 170° in Denak West. Secondary structural controls are northeasterly striking vein systems that dip northwesterly in Endako East and southeasterly in Denak. Domal uplift accompanying the rise of latest stage magma is considered to have caused intense dilatant deformation along older west-northwest trending shear zones, producing an elongated structural host for ore deposition."
