"THIS PAPER will trace the work done in bringing the Munro underground ""A"" •Orebody into production to replace the open pit, which was scheduled to be completed early in 1959. Included will be an outline of the exploration work and early planning, and of the final decisions on mining methods. Some of the more detailed work will be described and reasons will be given for the decisions made regarding development work, mine ventilation, ground support, and equipment. Brief mention will be made of open pit operations, as these have had some influence on underground development. Also, some of the main geological features of the ore occurrence will be de-scri0bed, as these had to be taken into consideration when making decisions on ore development and mining methods.LOCATION AND HISTORYhe Munro mine of Canadian Johns-Manville is in Ontario, approximately 50 miles east of Timmins and 40 miles west of the Que-bec-Ontari-0 boundary. The producing orebody is in the southwestern part of Munro township. Property controlled by the Company extends nortl1westerly about 2¥2 miles into Beatty township, on which two other interesting asbestos-bearing zones have been partially expl-0red. Active exploration work on the property was started in March, 194.9, and continued until the summer of 1950."

"Most of VictoriaÆs rivers and aquifers are already fully allocated or reaching full allocation. In regions without a well-established water market, access to water entitlements to facilitate new development is limited. In areas with established water markets, mine developers face an undue cost burden in circumstances where they are only planning to consume a fraction of the water entitlements that they purchase. The challenge for water managers is to ensure protection of water resources and other water users without creating an unnecessary disincentive for those types of developments that return most of the water that they take from water sources. The opportunity for development of a mine is explicitly linked to a particular location and must be developed where a resource is located or it cannot be exploited at all. Regulatory arrangements that facilitate development may have a positive impact on economic development, particularly where water availability is a potentially limiting factor. Net volume licensing has the potential to allow increased economic outcomes through improved licensing of access to water. Net volume licensing differs from traditional water licensing in that it authorises access to water on the basis of ænet useÆ rather than æthe gross volume takenÆ. This paper asks under what conditions net volume licensing is likely to be feasible and effective. In particular, the paper examines the information and accuracy requirements to allow net volume licensing decisions to be made. This work is based around five case studies in Victoria that were used to examine the potential for net volume licensing for mines and quarries. Assessing a potential net volume licensing arrangement requires the regulating authority to have an understanding of the inputs and outputs of water to a site. In contrast, assessment of take and use licences consider only a single input. It was concluded that the conditions that lend themselves to net volume licensing include: well understood water inputs and outputs, including appropriate accuracy of information where the location of site water inputs and outputs are the same where the timing of extraction and discharge can be managed to minimise impact on the water resource.A key remaining challenge is establishing an accounting framework that allows net volume licensing under current water resource limits. "The San Juan Basin, New Mexico contains many heavy mineral beach-placer sandstone deposits of Cretaceous age. Beach-placer sandstone deposits are concentrations of heavy minerals that formed by mechanical concentrations (i.e. settling) of heavy minerals on beaches or in longshore bars in a marginal-marine environment. They have high concentrations of several elements, such as Ti, Zr, rare earth elements (REE), Sc, Y, U, Th, Nb, Ta and Fe. These elements are becoming increasingly more important to industry, because they are used in the manufacture of devices our society uses every day, i.e. cell phones, computers, and alternative energy devices, like solar panels. It is unlikely that any of the beach-placer sandstone deposits in the San Juan Basin will be mined in the near future because of small tonnage, low grades, high iron content, and distance to processing plants and markets. However, as the demand for some of these elements increases because of increased demand and short supplies, the dollar value per ton of ore rises, enhancing deposit economics. Current studies at the New Mexico Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources are focused on the Apache Mesa (formerly Stinking Lake) deposit near Dulce, New Mexico. INTRODUCTION Beach-placer sandstone deposits are accumulations of heavy, resistant minerals (i.e. high specific gravity) that form on upper regions of beaches or in long-shore bars in a marginal-marine environment. They form by mechanical concentration (i.e. settling) of heavy minerals by the action of waves, currents, and winds (Fig. 1; Bryan et al., 2007). Modern examples are found along the Atlantic Coast, USA (Koch, 1986; Carpenter and Carpenter, 1991), southeastern Australia (Roy, 1999), and Andhra Pradesh, India (Rao et al., 2008), where they are mined for titanium, zircon, and monazite (a Ce-bearing rare earth, REE, mineral). Detrital heavy minerals comprise approximately 50-60% of these sandstones and typically consist of titanite, zircon, magnetite, ilmenite, monazite, apatite, rutile, xenotime, garnet, and allanite, among other minerals. Most of these minerals have a high specific gravity exceeding 4 and are dark colored, giving the sandstones a dark color, resulting in them being called black sandstones. Although beach-placer sandstone deposits are found in strata of all ages; the deposits in the San Juan Basin in New Mexico are restricted to Late Cretaceous rocks belonging to the Gallup, Dalton, Point Lookout, and Pictured Cliffs Sandstones (Fig. 2; Table 1; Chenoweth, 1957; Houston and Murphy, 1970, 1977). The beach-placer sandstones are black, dark gray, to olive-brown, resistant to erosion, and radioactive due to radioactive zircon, monazite, apatite, and thorium minerals. Anomalously high concentrations of Ti, Fe, Nb, Th, U, Zr, Sc, Y, and REE are characteristic of these deposits. Similar Upper Cretaceous heavy mineral, beach-placer sandstone deposits are found throughout Montana, Wyoming, Utah, Arizona, and Colorado (Dow and Batty, 1961; Houston and Murphy, 1970, 1977; Zech et al., 1994)."

A demountable X-ray tube vacuum spectrograph was designed by the Bureau of Mines for the determination of long-wavelength X-ray spectra from the light elements. This instrument was operated for both secondary and combined primary-secondary excitation of the aluminum K-series. There was an increased analytical sensitivity for elements in period 3, and an indication that with improved X-ray tubes or direct election excitation of the sample, X-ray determination of elements in period 2 is also possible.

Conflict over mineral development and its impacts on indigenous peoples occurs in many countries around the world. Canada, Bolivia and Peru have experienced mine development for centuries in areas where indigenous communities have been and continue to be affected by the mining industry. On a global basis the mining industry continues to face the challenge of implementing meaningful consultation programs with indigenous peoples. Many governments around the world have adopted sustainable development as a policy and one important element of sustainable development is minimizing social conflict. John Moffet and Francois Bregha (Moffet & Bregha, 1996), in their analysis of the role of law reform in promoting sustainable development, noted that stakeholder participation can reduce this type of conflict. Social conflict can result in expensive litigation and costly project delays for mine developers. Meaningful consultation with indigenous peoples in areas where mine development is proposed can be a critical factor in securing a social licence to operate. A report released by the United Nations in 2005, outlined the elements of a concept called ?free, prior informed consent? (FPIC) that promotes more sustainable development. FPIC provides that mineral exploration and mining should not proceed unless the mining company has secured the consent of the relevant indigenous group(s). This paper employs a comparative approach to evaluate the extent to which three active mining nations, Canada, Bolivia and Peru, require consultation with indigenous residents and adhere to the principle of FPIC. The comparative approach assists in the identification of those consultation elements in the legal regimes of each country that can minimize social conflict in mineral exploration and mine development and therefore contribute to more sustainable development. First, we examine the legal requirements to consult with and accommodate indigenous communities in Canada, a country with a long history of mineral development over a large geographic area that has entrenched in its Constitution the protection of indigenous peoples? rights. We then turn to an analysis of Bolivia, one of the most indigenously conscious mining jurisdictions that has followed the Canadian lead in entrenching constitutional protection for indigenous peoples. Third, the approach to consultation with indigenous peoples in Peru, a nation that has not adopted the Canadian and Bolivian approaches to constitutional protection of indigenous peoples rights, is considered.

Oregon Resources Corp. (ORC) has developed and permitted a new mining operation that incorporates a process design that will allow the unique paleo-beach placer deposits of southwestern Oregon to be extracted efficiently and economically, creating the only domestically mined source of a unique foundry grade chromite and specialty de-veining sand for precision casting. The operation will also provide an additional domestic source of garnet and zircon. Engineering design has been guided by the variable geology and mineralogy of the paleo-beach placer deposits as well as the need for a dry tailing scheme that resolves a lack of water resources at the placer locations and at the same time eliminates the need for slurry settling ponds, typical of paleo-beach placer operations in North America.

"Implicit modelling is an approach to spatial modelling in which the distribution of a target variable is described by a unique mathematical function that is derived directly from the underlying data and high-level parametric controls specified by the user. This modelling approach may be applied to discrete variables such as lithology (after converting the discrete codes to numeric values) or to continuous variables such as geochemical grades. This paper discusses the estimation of continuous (grade) variables using implicit modelling.One of the underlying engines of implicit modelling for producing this mathematical function description is the radial basis function (RBF). In essence, the RBF is a weighted sum of functions positioned on each data point. A system of linear equations is solved to derive weights and the coefficients of any underlying drift model coefficients. Once derived, the RBF may be solved for any unsampled point or averaged over any volume to provide an estimate of grade. It is possible, for example, to query the RBF on a regular grid to derive an estimate of block grades. Given the ease of creation of an RBF, and its ability to predict grade, the question arises as to how the grades derived from the solution of an RBF compare with grade estimates derived from conventional geostatistical interpolation methods (eg ordinary kriging (OK)).The purpose of this paper is to describe in lay terms: the basic structure of an RBF the role of parametric choice in the solution of RBFs and how this influences the character of the solution the fundamental similarities and differences between RBFs and conventional geostatistical estimators.Using a high-resolution conditional simulation, we show that in many situations RBF and OK estimates are very similar.CITATION:Stewart, M, de Lacey, J, Hodkiewicz, P F and Lane, R, 2014. The face area of a continuous mining section of an underground coal mine is the most dangerous area in the mine. Workers there are at nearly twice the risk of death or disabling injury than those in other parts of the mine. Despite extensive training of miners and improved equipment and mining methods, fatality and injury rates have remained constant during the past few years. It is clear that advanced research is necessary to apply new technologies or modify work procedures to solve the continuing problem of the loss of lives and the numerous injuries at the mine face. A U.S. Bureau of Mines research program is developing a Reduced-Exposure Mining System (REMS) that relocates personnel operating the mining machinery at the face away from the hazards to a nearby haven of relative safety. REMS uses proven technologies of computer automation and robotics to help control the operation of the mining machines at the face, while personnel are moved away to a nearby, safe control room. In this protected, well-ventilated environment, they can supervise or control the operation of the machines while viewing what the machine is doing using video and graphic display monitors.

ANALYSIS of 117 occurrences of bumps in coal mines shows that 67.6 percent are associated with pillar-line points.4 Slabbing and splitting pillars, development, and other unfavorable milling practices in abutment areas may be a contributory or the primary cause of bumps. The cure for pillar-line bumps is to recognize areas that can be expected to become highly stressed and to project the mining plan and operations to eliminate such areas insofar as possible. If such areas cannot be eliminated, then the mining plan and operations should be projected to avoid the necessity of disturbing these areas before the stresses have been dissipated.

This report was prepared by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to present a brief history of the listing of Iron Mountain Mine as a Superfund site on the National Priorities List (NPL) and subsequent remedial actions. The mine area is located on 4,400 acres near Redding, CA, and includes underground workings, an open-pit area, waste rock dumps, and tailings piles. This property involves multiple sources of acid mine drainage (AMD) that are high in copper, zinc, and cadmium. The selected remedial actions, based on the Record of Decision of 1986, would partially cap the Richmond mineralized zone to reduce infiltration of clean water, divert clean surface waters away from contaminated areas, fill surface subsidence areas, and enlarge the Spring Creek debris dam to provide increased surge capacity. Site remediation efforts at Iron Mountain are well into the remedial design-remedial action phase. Costs to date for remedial action are $7.5 million. Details of activities and designs of remedial elements are presented and future activities discussed.

The Polokwane Smelter Complex (PSC) relies on a single 68MW high-intensity six-in-line furnace to smelt a planned 650 000 t/a dry concentrate to produce a platinum group metals (PGM)-bearing matte. As typical of a greenfields venture, considerable attention was paid to the project development and implementation stages of design, engineering, construction and commissioning. Somewhat unusual though, was the role of a dedicated multi-disciplinary "Operational Readiness" and support team, comprising the owners team and specialists from the furnace designer, HATCH, to effect a safe and rapid ramp-up to the design smelter capacity of 68MW. The challenges encountered in developing an effective partnership will be discussed. The modus operandi and roles of the "Operational Readiness" team during the design, procurement, construction and commissioning stages as well as that of the operational support team within the overall ramp-up objective will be presented. Photogrammetry surveys were used to document a footwall slab failure that occurred at a surface coal mine located on the eastern slope of the Rocky Mountains. Photographs taken before and after the failure provided the pre- and post-failure geometry of the slope and the failed slab. A 2D finite element model was constructed using slope profiles. The model contained joint elements that represented the bedding surface upon which the slab slid and the model was used to analyze the footwall slope. The in situ stresses, rock properties and the bedding surface shear strength and stiffness properties are discussed. The process of mining out a valley and exposing a highwall was modelled. As expected, elastic valley rebound occurred in the model, but shear stress and shear displacement reversals along the slip surface were also observed. The modelling results provided new insight into shear strength degradation that occurs when the pit floor approaches and then passes a specific point in the highwall.

"Sunrise Dam Gold Mine (SDGM) is located 820 km from Perth, 220 km from Kalgoorlie—Boulder and 55 km south of Laverton in Western Australia. The SDGM main pit had successfully operated since 1997 and was due to be completed during 2012. An opportunity existed to extract the high-grade crown pillar – 600 kt @ 7 g/t for 135 koz by either open pit or underground methods.The crown pillar was the 60 m (vertically) thick remaining part of the high-grade Cosmo orebody between the top of the paste filled underground mine stopes and the planned base of the final open pit shell.There were two major difficulties being considered when choosing the underground or open pit options:a major wall failure in the upper section of the main pit wall directly above the crown pillar restricting access from the base of the open pit to the top of the crown pillarimpact of a high rainfall event while the crown pillar was being mined from either surface or underground resulting in flooding of the underground mine workings.This paper will discuss the following issues:the process to identify and evaluate the risks in both options using knowledge based modelling software; this technique allowed the evaluation of a complex set of assumptions to arrive at the preferred optionremediation of the Watu failurethe selection of the preferred option and the challenges encountered before, during and after the extraction of the crown pillarthe planning and geotechnical work to ensure the safe extraction of the crown pillarsuccessful outcomes transitioning from open pit operation to a solely underground operation.Citation:Robeson, A, Cowan, M and Brockman, M, 2016. At the Southern Experiment Station of the Federal Bureau of Mines, reports are prepared from time to time on results of washability studies of commercially important coal beds in the Southern Appalachian region. The investigations that provide the material for these reports are made by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, in cooperation with the University of Alabama and the mine operators. This report records the results obtained on a sample of run-of-mine coal taken in June 1953 from the Pratt bed at the Davidson Coal Co. mine about 1 mile west of Graysville, Ala. One of the main objectives of a washability study is to obtain technically and commercially important data in connection with the best methods for preparing and utilizing the Nation's limited reserves of good coking coal. Such information is important from the standpoint of conservation in that it facilitates selection of preparation methods that will yield an acceptable grade of coking coal with a mini-mum of losses of coal in the rejects. The Pratt bed is one of the main sources of coking coal in the Jefferson County part of the Warrior field. This is the first time, however, that data from a complete washability study of coal have been obtained from this bed in Jefferson County. In the Graysville area, Pratt-bed coal has good coking characteristics and is used for blending with other coals in making metallurgical coal. The extent of its use in such blends is severely limited in this area, however, by the fact that it has a high sulfur content, which has not been reducible to any great extent by washery treatment.

In this study, we develop a detailed model of the likely future carbon footprint of primary copper supply. We develop a peak copper production model, based on a detailed copper resource data set, and combine this with a comprehensive life cycle assessment model of copper mining and milling to predict greenhouse gas emission rates and intensities of Australian and global copper production up to 2100. By establishing a quantitative prediction of both copper production and corresponding greenhouse gas emissions of Australian and global copper industry, we then analysed the emissions intensity of various energy input scenarios, such as business-as-usual, solar thermal electricity and solar thermal electricity with biodiesel. The Australian Government has an aspirational goal for long-term greenhouse gas emissions of an 80% reduction from the 2000 level by 2050. For the copper sector, this means moving from about 12.6 Mt CO2e in 2000 to a goal of some 2.52 Mt CO2e in 2050 (assuming equal emissions reductions across the economy). Based on the energy sources modelled, only the solar thermal plus biodiesel scenario was capable of achieving this goal at about 0.15 Mt CO2e, since the solar thermal alone scenario still includes normal petro-diesel as a major source of emissions. Overall, it is clear that there are abundant resources which can meet expected long-term copper demands, the critical issue is more the carbon (and environmental) footprint of different copper supplies and use rather than how much is available for mining. It is clear that the switch to renewable energy can have a profound impact on the carbon intensity of copper supply, even allowing for increased energy intensity as ore grades decline, and a complete conversion to renewable energy will position the copper sector to meet existing annual greenhouse gas emissions targets and goals.

The Gladstone region, as one of the most industrially intense regions in Australia, uses significant quantities of fresh water. Awoonga Dam, situated on the Boyne River, is the only major source of water in the region. The current typical annual usage is 53 GL (Porteous, 2006) and approximately 80 per cent of the water is used by heavy industry (Gladstone Area Water Board, 2004). Until relatively recently, there has been ready and easy access to raw water for industrial use. The recent drought, which resulted in severe water restrictions in 2002 and 2003, emphasised the importance of water for a dominant industrial region like Gladstone. Although now in the process of changing, the typical contractual arrangements in the past have provided little financial incentive for efficient water use. From research undertaken on potential water reuse opportunities, several key questions have emerged related to water management in an industrial region such as Gladstone. This paper highlights these key questions, presents findings from recent regional strategies and assesses the potential for water reuse. Even though there is no clear-cut financial incentive for reusing water, there could be stronger regional and risk mitigation drivers for doing so. Initiatives to incorporate adaptive capacity through collaborative industrial synergies would allow for robustness and resilience in water security, leading to long-term sustainable water management across the Gladstone region.

Some countries are infinitely poorer than others in mineral resources-despite the perfect equality of their political leaders ambitions. Compare the mineral poverty of Kenya and Tanganyika with the riches of Katanga Province and Northern Rhodesia. Compare Paraguay with Chile, There never has been any equality in the distribution of nature's wealth. Minerals cannot play any role at all in economic development where they don't exist, and there are bound to be differential rates of economic development where there are basic differences in the wealth of mineral resources available. Africa is my principal area of interest and I know that there is an unfortunate but widespread misconception about Africa's "vast mineral resources, "its "untapped mineral wealth." Why is it untapped? Why is it undeveloped?

In 2006 Arch Materials initiated the development of an underground limestone mining complex. The decision to proceed with the project was the end result of several years of market research and geological reconnaissance. The scope of the project included the construction of two declines to the mining horizons located approximately 900 feet below the surface, the means and methods of this phase will be the primary focus of this discussion. The design, fabrication and erection of a state of the art crushing and screening processing plant which when completed will have the primary crushing located on the mine level allowing uniformly sized material to be brought to the surface by means of a highly efficient conveyor system and a surface portion of the plant where material would be additionally processed, screened and stockpiled into specific product types. Also included in the scope of the project is the construction of offices, warehouse and shop facilities necessary to support the operations, commercial sales and distribution of the finished products.

Although a general relationship exists between the two criteria used to measure sharpness of separation -error area and probable error -they sometimes give quite different appraisals of a particular washing operation. Error area takes into account how the entire raw coal was treated, whereas probable error reflects only how the material of intermediate density was separated, ignoring completely the recovery of clean coal and the rejection of heavy impurity. Error area is thus more reliable for general use. In heavy-medium cleaning, sharpness of separation decreases with increase in separating density, but ordinarily the change is not great enough to affect the yield and ash content of washed coal measurably. Therefore, distribution curves for heavy-medium units can be transposed from one separating density to another, at least in the range of separating densities ordinarily used in the United States.

The CSA Mine is located in Cobar, New South Wales and is operated by Glencore. Large scale underground production started from 1965, with zinc, lead, silver and copper extracted in the past. The current operations focus on copper, with a silver co-product.From 2014 to 2016, Cobar Management Pty Ltd (CMPL) undertook a major capital project to upgrade the primary ventilation system at the CSA Mine. This involved the development of ten raises using full-face raise boring from surface to a depth of 1450 m. The total length of the raises was approximately 2500 m. Geotechnical conditions were identified as a key project risk during the early planning stages of the project. Timely quantification of the geotechnical risks was required to minimise project delays and cost overruns. Geotechnical investigations were planned and conducted for each raise prior to pilot drilling and full-face back reaming.Nine of the ten raises had final wall camera and laser baseline surveys completed following full-face reaming. The surveys were conducted progressively, allowing ongoing back analysis and calibration of geotechnical evaluations as the project advanced.This paper presents the design and planning process of the raise bored excavations. It details the geotechnical investigation work undertaken to mitigate the geotechnical risks and the challenges and learnings from the project including the benefits of close collaboration between the parties involved.CITATION:Sidea, D and Brettell, T M, 2017.
