Two papers dealing with Noranda's milling operations have already been presented. The first1 of these covered the initial metallurgical problems connected with the treatment of the ore, while the second2 described the development of the mill from a 500-ton unit in 1928 to one with a daily capacity of 3000 tons less than six years later. At the time the second paper was written the equipment whirh had been installed to bring the mill capacity up to 3000 tons was being tuned into production and for this reason, though each step had previously been tested by a large-scale pilot operation, it was thought advisable to withhold metallurgical data until any starting-up difficulties had been overcome and anticipated requirements fulfilled. These requirements called for an improvement in gold recovery without any lowering of the previous ratio of concentration, and the pages that follow deal with the methods by which this result was obtained. An idea of the character of Noranda concentrating ore will be gained from an inspection of the following mineralogical analysis of the ore treated by the mill during 1933: MineRal Content Mineral ConteNt Chalcopyrite, per cent..... 6.8 Silica and silicates, per cent............ 18.3 Pyrite, per cent........... 22.1 Gold, native and as telluride, oz. per ton 0.15 Pyrrhotite, per cent....... 51.5 Silver, probably as argentite, oz. per tou 0.35 Magnetite, per cent....... 0.5 Thesr figures, which are typical, show that over 73 per cent of the ore treated consists of pyrite and pyrrhotite. Determirnation of the proportion of unrecovered gold associated with each of these minerals was therefore of primary importance in developing a suitable method for improving gold recovery. The Nova Ni-Cu-Co Operation, located in the Fraser Range of Western Australia, commenced commercial production in July 2017 only five years after discovery. Owned by Independence Group NL (IGO), the operation has successfully ramped up over an accelerated schedule and currently deploying leading technologies. This paper begins with a description of the Nova Operation, and its journey to achieve full production in such a short time frame. It includes discussions on development and production design, selection of fixed plant infrastructure, and the features challenges of running a low-pressure primary ventilation circuit. The paper also discusses key technologies that have improved overall safety for the underground workforce, and improved operational efficiencies. Investigations continue into the implementation of further technological applications for safety and productivity enhancements. This paper also discusses the findings from a study into transitioning from a diesel to an all-electric underground mining fleet, based on a review of Nova if it were to be developed today with the current EV offerings. The study indicates compelling savings will be available to future mines when considering development design, project schedule, capital outlay and operational savings, and the ‘next Nova’ is expected to be all electric.

Large-scale coal mining will cause environmental problems such as aquifer damage, land excavation and occupation, soil erosion, vegetation damage, and regional landscape damage. The existing coal mine environmental restoration technology is relatively simple, and there is a lack of systematic research on environmental total factors. Based on the mechanism of coal mining damage and the laws of environmental natural succession, the concept of “coal environmental protection mining” is proposed, which combines damage reduction mining and environmental element system restoration. In accordance with the environmental protection principle of “source protection, process damage reduction, and systematic restoration,” a technical system of “coal environmental protection mining” is constructed for the two types of mining damage scenarios: underground mining and open-pit mining. In view of the damage characteristics of underground mining, source environmental protection technology based on optimization of mining process parameters, stability maintenance and damage reduction technology for overlying rock bearing arch shell structure, zoning and time-sharing treatment of surface cracks, and direct drainage irrigation technology for mine water have developed. In accordance with the damage characteristics caused by open-pit mining, land-saving and source reduction damage technology, near-natural stratigraphic reconstruction, topsoil improvement, and environmental storage and utilization technologies for seasonal precipitation have developed. By applying the technology in this paper, the maximum surface settlement value of 12401 working face in Shangwan coal mine was relatively reduced by 25%, the surface cracks have been adjusted from step-type cracks to dynamic small cracks, and since the technical implementation of the Shendong mining area in 2010, the vegetation coverage has increased loss and crushing decreased by 0.06 km2 every year, the environmental restoration period of the dump site was advanced by more than one year, and the vegetation coverage rate increased by 41.78% compared with the background value in the semi-arid area of the victory open-pit coal mine demonstration area. A surface reservoir with a water storage capacity of 400,000 cubic meters has been built, and the seasonal and graded utilization of mine water has been realized. An underground reservoir with a water storage capacity of 1.22 million square meters has been built in the Baorixiler open-pit coal mine.

Geochemical data related to AMD for the West Coast and Southland regions have been collated into a relational database and GIS system. The types of information include; rock geochemical data, water chemistry data and aquatic macro-invertebrate abundance data. This information will be combined with eco-toxicology experiments to determine impact thresholds on aquatic ecosystems. Ultimately these datasets will be combined with remediation investigations to produce a Framework to assist decision making related to mine planning, consent and compliance.   Current geochemical research examines the controls on As concentrations downstream of gold mining areas and the variability of AMD from Brunner Coal Measure rocks. Assessment of factors that control the chemistry of Brunner Coal Measure AMD such as mine type, hydrogeology, geology, geochemistry and climate is in progress. Minerals that control the concentration of aluminium downstream of AMD point sources include alunite, jurbanite and various forms of Al(OH)3.

This report presents prediction equations for eleven factors indicative of metallurgical coal quality which have been developed from data obtainable during exploration. Five coke strength parameters and six carbonization product yields have been predicted for coking coals having volatile matter contents in the range 16.3 to 42.1 percent, dry basis. The prediction models developed contain information from the proximate and ultimate analyses, the size consist, and the petrographic composition of coking coals carbonized in BM-AGA retorts at 800°, 900°, and 1,000°C. The equations reported have been evaluated with independent data derived from the 900°C carbonization of 33 binary blends. Present results show that metallurgical coal quality can be predicted ahead of mining. Capability to forecast coal quality is useful in mine planning and should provide basic information for optimization of blending and crushing techniques, leading to the production of uniform coke.

The Bureau of Mines' Oil Shale Data- Bank (OSDB) was created in 1976 to serve as a centralized source for the storage, retrieval, and dissemination of technical literature, patents, and information on research projects in oil shale. Thousands of bibliographic references, patents, and research projects relating to the mining of oil shale have been identified, abstracted, and indexed according to selected keyword topics. The resulting data bank listings are contained in three sections, each with a separate keyword breakdown for use in rapidly identifying references pertaining to a specific subject. All references cited in the OSDB were published prior to an established cut-off date of May 1, 1981, when a redirection of Bureau of Mines programs resulted in the loss of project funds and the subsequent phasing-out of data bank operations. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The oil shale data bank listings are the result of a team effort of the project staff. The contributions of Jimaleen Jansma for keypunching, information acquisition, and data entry, and John Brandenburg and Sandra Brake for keywording and information acquisition are gratefully acknowledged. This report contains a description of the contract activities performed by ENSCO, Inc. under contract No. H0178069. The purpose of this project was to enhance the Bureau of Mine?s Cableless Electronic Survey System use to aid in the drilling of long (approx. 2000 feet) boreholes in coal. This drilling is performed as part of the methane drainage program. The system that was ultimately developed was field tested 2nd demonstrated in actual in-mine drilling activities. The significance of this system as compared to previous drill survey systems is the fact that it surveys without having to be inserted and removed for each survey point. It is so designed that it can withstand the shock and vibration experience by the drill string during drilling. This means an increased productivity is now possible in that drill operators can determine drill bit positioning in a near real-time environment.

The mining industry of Cameroon continued to be dominated by crude petroleum. Crude petroleum production has become the most important facet of Cameroon's economic development. Oil production was estimated to be 6.3 million tons in 1983 compared with 5.2 million tons in 1982 and 4.3 million tons in 1981. Over two-thirds of its export income was attributed to crude oil. The country's only refinery, dedicated in 1981, has a production capacity of 2 million tons. Cameroon has become self- sufficient in petroleum products since commissioning the refinery. The oil sector contributed approximately 13.5% to Cameroon's gross domestic product in 1982-83. Oil production was expected to rise from 125,000 barrels per day in 1983 to 156,000 barrels per day in 1985 when output peaks. Cameroon's ultimate recoverable reserves have been calculated at 100 million tons, or 750 million barrels of oil.

"The pressures produced by dust explosions are frequently so great and are developed so rapidly that widespread destruction of manufacturing equipment and buildings results. Experimental data on maximum pressures and rates of pressure rise produced in a closed vessel by numerous metal powders and by dusts used in the plastics industry were published in two previous Bureau of Mines papers.4/5/One means for reducing structural damage is provision in the enclosing walls and/or roof of rapidly opening explosion-relieving devices or relief vents through which the pressure of an incipient dust explosion can be quickly dissipated. The vents can be simply unrestricted or free openings: hinged or pivoted sash which swing outward at a predetermined internal pressure; fixed sash, with light wall anchorages; scored glass panes; light wall panels; monitors or skylights; poppet-type vent closures; paper, metal foil, or other diaphragms that burst at low pressures; pull-out diaphragms, or other similar arrangements.The use of pressure-relief vents is recommended in the dust-explosion codes of the rational Fire Protection Association,6/ and recently a special committee on explosion venting has been organized. However, technical data on which the design and distribution of relief vents can be based are meager. An experimental study on venting grain-dust and cornstarch explosions was made by the Bureau of Chemistry and Soils, United States Department of Agriculture.7/ Tests on cork fines, cinnamon, starch, barley dust, and a phenolic plastic were made in a laboratory-scale (0.1-cubic-foot) apparatus by the engineering department of the Factory Insurance Association.8/ A study on the venting of explosions of acetone-air mixtures was made by the Bureau of Mines.9/The object of the present investigation is to extend the limited knowledge on the effectiveness of pressure-relief vents of different types, shapes, and sizes. The aim is to determine the venting requirements in equipment and structures of various dimensions and shapes for dusts of widely different explosive properties. On the basis of such accumulated information, together with theoretical considerations, it is hoped that ultimately it will be possible to recommend correct venting for most operations in which a dust-explosion hazard exists."

The Bureau of Mines and the Alabama. Power Co. jointly conducted a first experiment in underground gasification of coal at Gorgas, Ala., during the fall and winter of 1946-47. This preliminary experiment showed that it was not difficult to maintain combustion of coal underground, and that coal in place could be completely gasified. It was noted that the high temperature developed by the gasification of coal in place brought about changes in overlying strata that appeared to be favorable to the process. The high temperatures caused the roof rock to become plastic, to expand, and to settle down on the mine floor directly behind the reacting coke face. These results were promising enough to warrant further investigation of the process. It was believed that if this action could be controlled properly with roofs of similar composition, it would tend to force the gas-making fluids underground against the coal faces. Plans for the second experiment were based in part on this favor-able roof action, and the successful operation of the planned initial straightline passages depended on this fact. Gorgas was chosen as the site for the second experiment for the following reasons: A tract of coal land of sufficient size was available and isolated from the main body of coal; the roof rock was similar in composition to that encountered in the first experiment; and the overlying strata were thick enough to eliminate some of the operating difficulties that had been encountered, In addition, power, water, and machine-shop facilities as well as an adequate supply of labor were available in this area, and the friendly cooperation of the Alabama Power Co. further recommended this site for the planned experiment.

The Carthage field, in Pamela County, Tex., is one of the largest gas-condensate in respect to both areal extent and volume of recoverable gas in the United States. The field (shown in fig. 1) is approximately 25 miles long by 20 miles wide on a southwest to northeast axis and includes 306 producing wells as of July 1, 1948. 3 distinct reservoirs in the Rodessa and Sligo formations have been found in the Carthage area the two main producing zones being the Upper and Lower Pettit, less important production being found in the Hill zone. Although a small amount of commercial production has been obtained in the Travis Peak formation, it has not been included in this report. An engineering study has been made by Bureau of Mines engineers, with the ultimate objective of arriving at an estimate of the gas reserves, by application of the data made available by the operators in the Carthage field. During World War II the Bureau of Mines submitted a restricted petroleum-engineering report on the Carthage field to the Petroleum Administration for War, at which time (March 1944) the development consisted of only 19 producing wells, 7 of which were dual completions. Because of the restricted nature of the first report and the limited development at the time of writing, a more complete investigation and subsequent publication was considered advisable. Bureau of Mines engineers have made use of all available records such as electric logs, drilling-time logs, core descriptions and results of core analyses, well-completion records, and production data in developing this report.

In order to investigate the variation of the load-displacement relations of piles in a site, vertical load tests were carried out on 25 small diameter steel pipe piles. Out of 25 piles, 15 piles were close-ended pipe piles attached with a blade at the pile toe and 10 piles were open-ended pipe piles. To carry out these load tests in a short period, two types of rapid load test methods, Spring hammer load test and Falling mass load test, were employed. The load tests of all piles were completed in two days with 180 blows in total. In order to estimate a static load-displacement of a pile, non-linear damping method was used. It is shown from the test results that the performance of the pipe piles such as the ultimate pile resistance and the initial pile head stiffness is improved by re-driving.

Increased productivity in the U.S. underground coal industry has taxed pre-existing conveyor belt haulage systems. The usual remedies are costly and can disrupt production. A reduction in the belt feeder discharge rate on mobile haulage sections results in more uniform loading and reduces the spillage vulnerability. An investigation is made to determine the effect, if any, on shuttle car discharge time arising from lower feeder discharge rates. A five-section, underground mine is visualized, and belt spillage is introduced. The sectional feeder discharge rate is progressively lowered until spillage is precluded. At each level, the simulated spillage is measured and compared to the loss in face production. Methods of predicting the loss in face production from lower feeder discharge rates are discussed.

THE St. Lawrence Seaway Project ranks with the greatest engineering undertakings of all time. A summary of major materials going into the construction of this project, shown in Table I, will assist in an appreciation -of this fact. These data relate to Seaway construction only, and it should be remembered that two large-scale power projects are in the construction stage on the St. Lawrence river concurrently with construction of the Seaway. A project of such magnitude as the Seaway would attract widespread interest even if it were being constructed in a remote area. The fact that it is located in a heavily populated and developed section of both Canada and the United States has done much to enhance this interest, and in many ways complicates the problems confronting the engineer in the design and construction phases. Many consider the St. Lawrence Seaway to be a new idea that has developed within the past decade - such is far from the fact, because the St. Lawrence River canal systems have existed for more than a century, and the Seaway Project is but a new, larger, and more efficient version of a continually expanding facility.

In an investigation of the incineration of combustible wastes, the Bureau of Mines studied the effect of dimensional parameters, process variables, and fuel properties on the operation of an incinerator that consisted of a single cylindrical combustion chamber in which all combustion air was supplied tangentially above the fuel. Construction and operation of three designs of such a device proved that the tangential overfire air design is effective in providing efficient combustion and low concentration of particulate matter in the effluent gas. A correlation was found that related burning rate with air rate, chamber diameter, and inlet port diameter. In one of the incinerator models, ignition was by radiation from a preheated surface. The temperature of this surface was required to be 1,400° to 1,600° F to insure ignition of moist refuse; however, this had little effect on combustion rates. In the combustion of moist refuse, evaporation of the water proceeded through the fuel bed as a wave, with an ignition wave following the evaporation.

The Bureau of Mines evaluated the impact of the depletion allowance upon the economic availability of copper from domestic deposits. The potential long-run percentage depletion deduction, cumulated over the life of the properties, was estimated at approximately $2.5 billion for producing properties and up to $11.7 billion for nonproducers. The income transfer, in the form of higher Federal income tax payments if the allowance were repealed, was estimated at $1.5 billion for producing properties and up to $8 billion for nonproducers. The percentage depletion allowance, through its role in determining Federal income tax liability, was found to be very significant in affecting profitability. Repeal of the allowance could result in major domestic copper availability reductions at all price levels, now and in the future, as a result of reduced profit margins for current producers, and postponement of development decisions for nonproducers. It was demonstrated that a 50-percent reduction in the percentage depletion rate applicable to copper would also result in a significant decrease in profitability for nonproducing properties. For producing properties, the percentage depletion rate on copper was shown to be less significant than the income limitation that is placed upon the total amount of the depletion deduction. Repeal of the minimum Federal tax provision was shown to be significant in enhancing profitability for both producing and nonproducing deposits. The report concludes that the percentage depletion allowance operates as an important method of capital recovery and production incentive.

This paper describes the results of testwork for the treatment of Ambatovy laterite by an acid pressure leach process, with recovery of the soluble nickel and cobalt values as mixed sulphide intermediate by precipitation with hydrogen sulphide, and subsequent refining of the mixed sulphide to nickel and cobalt metals. These process development studies were carried out primarily in 2004, as part of a bankable feasibility study for the Ambatovy Nickel Project.
