Domestic Production and Use: In 1976, 12 companies operated 31 primary aluminum reduction plants, with 3 firms accounting for 63% of production capacity. Washington, Oregon, and Montana accounted for 36% of the total production; Gulf Coast States 19%, Northern States 29%, and other Southern States 16%. Based on published producer prices output of primary metal in 1976 was valued at $3.8 billion. Aluminum consumption by 25,000 firms was centered in the East Central United States. Of aluminum consuming industries in 1976 building accounted for about 25%; packaging 22%; transportation 19%; electrical 13%; , consumer durables 8%; and other uses, 13%.

A mining operation begins with prospecting and exploration-stages with long periods of investment and high risk of failure. However, success in exploration ultimately determines survival of the mining industry. Prospecting and exploration may discover evidence of a mineral occurrence and outline its size and character, but ore deposits that support mining are "made" through the collective efforts of project geologists, geophysicists, geochemists, metallurgists, engineers, chemists, lawyers, and even politicians (Joralemon, 1975). Some deposits may go through multiple cycles of rejection and recommendation, discovery and development, decline and abandonment, rediscovery and development, etc., as economic, technological, or political conditions change or geologic understanding is improved. Peters (1987, p. 233) graphically illustrates the normal life cycle of a mine and the position of exploration in the cycle (Fig. 4.0.1). During the past fifty years, mineral exploration has evolved from comparing evidence of mineralization of prospects with that of known deposits to a more quantitative science employing many facets of geochemistry, geophysics, multispectral sensing from space, computer data storage, analysis, modeling, and most importantly, a better understanding of ore genesis. This modem approach to exploration began in the late 1940s and continues to develop. Exploration efforts peaked in the 1960s with emphasis upon the search for porphyry copper deposits, Mississippi Valley lead-zinc deposits, and volcanogenic massive sulfide copper-lead-zinc deposits. It peaked again in the middle and late 1980s with emphasis upon micron-size disseminated gold and epithermal and stratiform precious metal deposits.

The development of the Seminole area into one of the major oil-producing sections of the country has been accompanied by many innovations and departures from former methods of development. On July 1, 1929, two years and nine months from the date of discovery, 20,490 acres were considered proved, and additional acreage is constantly being developed. Because of its peculiar conditions, extent, and rapid rate of development, the Seminole area provided numerous problems, the solution of which necessitated research in connection with practical field operation; as a result, there was a radical departure from methods usually employed in the development of a new field in the Mid-Continent area.

This report describes in detail methods of making corrosion tests and chemical analyses that have been used extensively and satisfactorily in a study of plants in which various surface, waters and brines are conditioned and used for water flooding, brine disposal, and reservoir-pressure maintenance in Kansas, Oklahoma, and North Texas. The tests and analyses described were designed and adapted for use in the field in determining the relative corrosive and plugging tendencies of waters from various sources conditioned by different methods. Although the described methods were developed and used in testing oil-field waters in the Midcontinent oil-producing area of the United States, these same methods should be equally applicable to testing oil-field or highly mineralized waters throughout the world. Many of the methods used have been discussed by the writer (1)2/ previously, and some of them have been used for similar work in other laboratories. Early in the development of the practice of the subsurface injection of brines for disposal and increasing the recovery of oil, it became evident that different methods of chemical treatment and conditioning equipment would have to be devised to sustain desired injection rates into water-input wells. These changes became necessary because the highly mineralized waters produced with petroleum from deep formations became chemically unstable when pumped to the surface, owing to loss of dissolved gases as pressure and temperature dropped to atmospheric and to the contact with atmospheric oxygen at the surface.

Formulation and commercial utilization of solid-waste incinerator slag by-product is the focus of this paper. Particular attention is given to iron aluminosilicate melts having compositions similar to that of nature's basalt The earth?s crust can be viewed as an environmental laboratory for predicting stability of various silicates; small-scale laboratory experiments are necessary to confirm findings there from. An ideal slag consumes flux additives at acceptable cost, is compatible with furnace refractory, flows readily from the furnace, and has physical properties suitable for its commercial utilization -all within the critical constraint that the slag is environmentally stable. Examples of successful solid waste slagging practice, including tonnage, utilization and pricing, are provided from metallurgical and waste treatment operations of North America. Crystalline silica (quartz, cristobalite, and tridyrnite) is regulated by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) because of its potential for causing debilitating but nonmalignant lung diseases. In 1987, the International Agency for Research Against Cancer (IARC) conducted a review of the health literature and concluded that crystalline silica was a probable human carcinogen. As a result of this finding, OSHA was required to regulate crystalline silica under its Hazard Communication Standard (HCS). The standard requires that all materials handled by OSHA-regulated facilities be labeled according to the requirements of RCS and that workers receive proper training on the handling of the material if the crystalline silica content equals or exceeds 0.1 weight percent (0.1 %). MSHA currently is considering enacting its own RCS. This will be similar to OSHA's RCS. If the standard is enacted, most mineral producers will have to determine the respirable monitor filter and bulk crystalline silica contents of their ores and products so that workers and/or customers will know whether they are in compliance with the 0.1% HCS and/or the OSHA permissible exposure level (PEL) of 50 µg for an 8-hour workday for respirable crystalline silica as determined from monitor samples. Two major concerns with the RCS are the widespread occurrence of crystalline silica in nature and the suitability of current technology for routinely determining crystalline silica concentrations at the 0.1 % RCS level. Most ores are extracted from silica-bearing deposits and it is a common constituent of rocks and soils. OSHA's RCS will have the greatest impact on the producers of crushed stone, diatomite, dimension stone, gravel, industrial sand, perlite, pumice, pyrophyllite, sand, and talc because these materials frequently are shipped directly from the mill to the customer. MSHA's RCS would affect nearly all mineral producers. Those producers that have crystalline silica present in concentrations near the 0.1 % cutoff point will have the most difficulty with the analysis. Crystalline silica can be quantified at the 0.1 % level by X-ray diffractometry in simple systems containing one, two, and possibly three minerals if (1) none of the accessory minerals has X-ray diffraction reflections that coincide or overlap with those of crystalline silica and (2) the standard has a particle size distribution and crystallinity similar to those of the sample. In some instances, it may not be possible to determine the crystalline silica content of a sample with any degree of certainty using the recommended regulatory protocol. In all cases, it is recommended that a qualified mineralogist identify the minerals in a sample prior to any regulatory analysis. Additionally, the uncertainty as to whether some silica polymorphs should be classified as crystalline or noncrystalline and the suitability of metastable high-temperature standards, such as cristobalite and tridyrnite, for regulatory analysis at ambient temperatures should be addressed further. This overview is written both to highlight these problems and to serve as a guide for analysts, regulators, and industry personnel who are involved in the crystalline silica issue. It also covers some of the difficulties and/or shortcomings in quantifying crystalline silica, such as the ubiquitous mineral quartz, in the workplace.

Petroleum technologists and progressive operators constantly are striving to increase the percentage of oil that may to recovered from reservoir rocks through wells. The exhaustive studies that have been made of the function of natural as in the production of oil, for example, have aided operators greatly in increasing the quantity of oil recovered from reservoirs. Natural gas dissolved in and otherwise associated under pressure with oil in reservoir rocks, however, is not the only source of energy available for moving oil through sands to wells. In becoming "reservoir—energy conscious" engineers have learned that in many petroleum reservoirs the edgewater flanking the oil accumulation constitutes a potential source of energy capable, through proper control, of increasing oil—recovery efficiencies materially. No longer is the encroachment of water into the oil— and gas—filled tart of the reservoir considered as an evil to be combatted by devious methods but rather a natural consequence, incident to the withdrawal of nil and as from the wells, that may be used advantageously in lengthening the flowing life of wells and increasing the economic recovery of oil and gas.

A review was made of two Russian books and a chapter from a third book dealing with pipeline transport of coal. Emphasis was placed on hydrotransport of coarse coal in underground mines or surface pipelines. The books reviewed were: "Means of Increasing the Effectiveness of Hydrotransport," by V. N. Pokrovskaya (1972), "Parameters and Modes of Hydraulic Transport of Coal" by V. V. Traynis (1970), and the chapter "Calculations of Hydrotransport of Useful Minerals and Waste Rock" from the book "Hydromechanization of Opencast Workings" by G. A. Nurok (1970). All three are unique and useful additions to the world literature on hydrotransport. The Traynis book reveals the development and results of circular wheel stand tests to simulate hydrotransport in horizontal pipes, which is a potentially outstanding contribution to slurry pipeline technology. Graphical data and equations are presented which suggest that headlosses for coarse coal can be predicted with good accuracy for pipe sizes up to 14 inches in diameter. Wheel stands permit tests for pipe wear and lump degradation without recycling coal through pumps. Recommendations are made for wheel stand tests and for correlation of existing data.

"Uranium exploration by Eldorado prospectors north of Lake Athabasca began in late 1944 and resulted in initial discoveries in 1946 in the Beaverlodge region with mill production starting in early 1953. The operation was closed in mid-1982 having produced 21,457,947 kilograms U30 8 from the Eldorado FayVerna mine, Eldorado satellite operations and from other district producers on a custom basis.The Fay- Verna mine consists of pitchblende-brannerite orebodies spatially associated with both sides of a regional eastwest structure, the St. Louis Fault. The orebodies in the footwall (Fay) are elongate deposits of two types raking steeply to the southwest along the 50 degree south dip of the fault.One type consists of networks of fractures and veins filled with pitchblende, calcite and quartz in chlorite, epidote-altered mylonitized mica schists and amphibolites of the Middle Aphebian Tazin Group. The other type is comprised of fragments of mylonitized metasomatic quartz-feldspar granite of Late Middle Aphebian age cemented with a matrix of pitchblende, brannerite, calcite and some quartz. The vein networks lie en echelon in the footwall of the breccia ore bodies which, in part, are capped by the mud gouge of the St. Louis Fault; in other places, the breccia orebodies are overlain by basal conglomerates, grits and arkoses of the late Aphebian Martin Formation which itself immediately underlies the plane of the fault.Orebodies in the hanging wall (Verna) are a series of irregular, tabular deposits lying within a tightly overturned syncline of Tazin mica schists, amphibolites and siliceous mylonites. They consist of pitchblende, calcite-filled fractures grouped into zones and deposits displaying stratabound habits within individual rock types.Also described are several Eldorado satellite properties which were significant producers of uranium and which display complementary geology to that in the Fay- Verna mine.In general, uranium deposits in the Eldorado Beaverlodge region are closely related to minor structures associated with major faults. Uranium appears to be best concentrated where the rocks are well mylonitized and brecciated. Pitchblende fills networks of veins and fractures in metasediments and metavolcanics as well as matrix material cementing brecciated, mylonitized granite. All deposits in the Beaverlodge region lie in close proximity to the unconformity between the Martin Formation and the underlying Tazin Group."

The paper notes that the extraction of 22% of the remaining workable reserves in the north western area involves a risk of spontaneous combustion higher than is normal in Britain. Mining systems have been tailor made in order to minimize the risk of spontaneous heatings, and these systems are described. Well-proved methods of combating spontaneous combustion are referred to, as well as the limitations which now apply to them as the result of the introduction of modern mining techniques. A substantial part of the paper is devoted to the circumstances in which spontaneous combustion occurs underground in the north western area. Several actual incidents which have occurred in the last few years, along with the practical application of the lessons learned, are described. Of particular note are: a) the procedure adopted in the north western area to equalize pressure differences across stoppings using pressure chambers, and b) a retreat mining system, primarily designed to deal with high methane emission and steep gradients, which also affords some protection against spontaneous combustion.

THE Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Company's underground mine at Flin Flon, Manitoba, has in the past been serviced by two working shafts-the North Main shaft, and the No. 3 shaft. The North Main shaft is used to hoist the total production from under-ground, and handles the greater part of the mine supplies and crews. The shaft is five-compartment design, rectangular in cross-section, and is equipped entirely with steel shaft sets from the surface to the finished depth of 2,210 feet. Hoisting equipment in the surface plant will not permit the North Main shaft to be extended below its present finished depth. The No. 3 shaft, located approximately 2,300 feet from the North Main shaft, is used primarily as a ventilation shaft, and for hoisting lower-level development waste to the 390 level, where this material is used as mine fill. The No. 3 shaft is of standard rectangular design, timbered with 8-in. by 8-in. creosoted fir sets, hung on 6-foot centres. From the surface to the 1,430 level, the No. 3 shaft consists of three 5 ft. by 5 ft. compartments, and below this level to the completed depth of 2,300 feet, the shaft is increased to four compartments. To service the mine and to expedite development below the 2,210 level, a one and one-half compartment winze was sunk from the 2,210 level to a depth of 766 feet, or approxima tel y the 3,000 level.

"2.1. General Considerations and Properties2.1.1. IntroductionOur present knowledge of the platinum-group elements (POE) is extensive, the reason being two-fold. The elements have many uses and, moreover, they exhibit extremely varied chemical behaviour, depending on their state of oxidation and chemical environment. The present chapter reviews a selected body of material which is of particular relevance to mineralogy and geochemistry.Comprehensive treatises on the POE include those by Mellor (1956-1957), Gmelin (1938-1957) and Pascal (1958). The inorganic chemistry, particularly coordination chemistry, has been dealt with in works by Griffith (1967), Hartley (1973) and Livingstone (1975), and the analytical chemistry by Walsh and Hausman (1963), Beamish (1966) and Beamish and Van Loon (1972, 1977). Darling (1973) and Savitsky (1978) have reviewed the metallurgical properties and applications of the metals. Goldberg and Helper (1968) have reviewed the thermochemistry and oxidation potentials of POE systems, and Wagman et at. (1969) have also provided selected values of their thermodynamic properties. The geochemistry of the POE has been reviewed by Yushko-Zakharova et at. (1967), Cousins (1973), Cabri (1974), and Naldrett and Duke (1980).Platinum was used briefly as a coinage metal in ImperialRussia. Otherwise, the principal early use for platinum and its alloys was in the fabrication of chemically resistant apparatus. Subsequently, a large part of platinum production was utilized for catalysts in the sulphuric acid and ammonia industries. Platinum has been replaced by vanadium pentoxide in the manufacture of sulphuric acid, but, in recent times, catalytic upgrading of petroleum and emission control systems for automobiles have opened further huge markets for the metal. All of the POE find uses either as reagents or catalysts in the synthesis of organic compounds, e.g., in the Wacker process, which uses palladium chloride to catalyze the production of acetaldehyde from ethylene. There are, of course, a large number of specialized uses for the elements, particularly in alloys, temperature measurement devices, cancer therapy and so on."

The explosive-anchored rockbolt was field tested in six mines where rock conditions varied from incompetent shale or mudstone through fairly soft sand-stone to firm sandy shales. The purpose of the testing was to document, under a wide variety of conditions and in comparison to other rockbolt anchors, the quality of the anchorage produced by the explosive-anchored bolt. In addition, the length, strength, and design of the explosive charge necessary to produce positive anchorage up to the yield strength of the weakest component of the bolt were determined. A l4-inch length beaded explosive charge was found to be suitable, in general, in relatively weak strata, and the length can be reduced in more competent strata. Of the 127 explosive?-anchored bolts tested, 118 bolts produced an evaluated anchorage in excess of 17,000 pounds. Only 4 of 43 expansion-shell bolts and 4 of 14 wedge bolts produced anchorage this good. In preliminary tests, properly coupled explosive-anchored bolts did not ignite an explosive gas mixture. Some minor phases included in the investigation were as follows: (1) effect of explosive-anchored rockbolt on surrounding rock; (2) effect of time on anchored bolts based on torque tests; (3) effect of submersion in water on rockbolt anchorage; (4) pull tests to higher loads; and (5) ignition tests.

Numerous investigators have studied grinding. Each has contributed his bit to a literature that is difficult to correlate. Too many of the results have been transformed into curves with so many "inflection points" and "counterflexures" that they obscure the issue. Some of the investigators have neglected the very essence of the problem, namely the power and the amount of material to which a known amount of work was applied. The purpose of this paper is to show the ease with which results can be interpreted when these quantities are duly recognized. Some grinding tests will be given for illustration. Grinding studies are of two kinds: (1) Study of the character of the ore and (2) study of the performance of the machines. Several ores may be crushed by a given machine, or several machines may be used on a given ore. The illustrations given in this report cover both objectives.

Engineering properties of rock are essential in most phases of mining from site reconnaissance through mineral processing. Review of the literature indicates, however, that property data is scarce for most coal measure rocks in the United States. The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, has undertaken a wide-ranging testing program to provide more complete property data for coal strata in the U.S. coal basins. The property data are expected to have application in geophysical exploration, the development of pre- mining and hazard detection probes and instrumentation, mine design, engineering and rock mass classification, subsidence engineering, and ground control. This paper describes the comprehensive program encompassing in situ geological, geophysical, and geotechnical properties and laboratory determinations of acoustic, electromagnetic, physical, mechanical, and index properties and discusses results for 500 ft of coal measures at a minesite in the Northern Appalachian, Eastern Coal Province.

The mining industry uses many types of mineral and metallurgical plants to produce saleable product from ore mined. Plant design history has left current operations with a mixture of manual operation and various forms of automated process controls. Consequently, we typically see high-variability in the continuous operations together with a shortfall in the attainment of full capacity or higher utilisation of consumables.At a level of best practice, ‘operational performance excellence’ focuses on process control, using automation and control systems to deliver process optimisation. This more sophisticated delivery is a great deal more difficult than the first stage of equipment selection/installation. It includes the appropriate selection of the right instrumentation and control system, key process knowledge, individuals with a solid control engineering background/experience and the essential backing/support of the operations management team together leading to higher-value delivery. Robust solutions can be realised, considerably minimising process variation, thus leading to process optimisation. This approach results in an easier, efficient and safer process while providing considerable returns for the plant owners.How variable are your processes, and do you maintain optimised process performance with dedicated resources, modern instrumentation, ‘best practice’ control systems and performance monitoring tools? In this paper, these questions and their possible answers are discussed.I say we can do much more and be ‘more efficient’ in our efforts to remain competitive. Rio Tinto Coal Australia (RTCA) developed the Meandu Mine in Queensland, Australia in 1983 to supply thermal coal to the adjacent and newly constructed Tarong Power Station (TPS). In designing the mine, RTCA selected Meandu?s best economic reserves for a 27-year life based on station owner Tarong Energy Corp.?s (TECs) estimated life for TPS. That 27-year plan changed dramatically in the early 2000s when TEC approved life extensions to TPS?s four existing units plus construction of a fifth unit. After reviewing Meandu?s remaining reserves, RTCA decided the nearby Kunioon reserve offered the more economic option for maintaining deliveries beyond 2010. Those plans changed again in 2007 when TEC chose to purchase the Meandu Mine and nearby reserves. TEC then selected Thiess Pty Ltd. (Thiess) to continue operating Meandu until the new mine at Kunioon could be developed. After assuming operation of the mine in 2008, Thiess began a review of Meandu?s remaining reserves and found considerable coal available with economic potential. Working jointly with TEC, Thiess performed several analyses on Meandu and subsequently the Kunioon coal reserves. The results changed TEC?s decision from expediting Kunioon?s construction to instead continuing Meandu?s operation for up to 15 additional years.

During 1973, a 20,000 net ton (18 100 metric ton) formcoke test was carried out at Inland's 26.5-foot (8.08-meter) hearth diameter on NO. 5 Blast Furnace. The formcoke briquettes were produced from Elko1 coal by FMC at their pilot plant in Kemmerer, Wyoming. The briquettes were shipped to Inland in open railroad cars and most of them were placed in an outside storage field until a sufficient amount was available for the actual blast furnace test. The test consisted of three phases: an initial four-week base period; the actual 33-day formcoke test period; and a final three-week post-test base period. During the formcoke test period, the regular coke skip loads were gradually replaced with skips of formcoke until, after a three-week period, the replacement ratio reached 80%. The furnace operated smoothly and quality hot metal was produced. The burden remained permeable and it was possible to maintain wind rates 9 of over 100,000 scfm (47 Nm3/s) without significant blast pressure increases. Dusting from the formcoke was not a problem either in the stockhouse or in the top gas. The formcoke briquettes maintained their original shape and density as they descended through the furnace. When the 80 percent replacement level had been reached, the inwall temperatures became higher than normal (about 2000 ºF (1090 ºC)) and followed an unusual steady pattern. In addition, the top gas temperature became higher than normal, and the hot metal analyses and temperatures began to fluctuate unacceptably. In general, it is felt that the high inwall temperatures were a result of channeling of the hot furnace gases along the stack walls. This channeling appears to have been promoted by a change in distribution of the burden in the top of the furnace which, undoubtedly, was caused by the increased increments of formcoke. Since it was felt to be unsafe to operate the furnace for an extended period of time with the inwall temperatures at the high level, a decision was made to remove the formcoke from the furnace. When this was done, the inwall temperatures returned to normal. Once the inwall temperatures had returned to normal, the remaining 3,800 net tons (3450 metric tons) of formcoke were used in the furnace at a nominal 40% replacement level for five continuous days. The furnace operated smoothly during this period, and the results were representative of satisfactory furnace operation with partial replacement of regular coke with formcoke. The test was successful in proving that formcoke can replace up to about 50% of the regular coke in a large furnace operating at high wind rates. However, additional work will be required to develop acceptable charging practices for using higher levels of formcoke replacement.

ABSTRACT An overall study was conducted to evaluate the properties and processes influencing the rate and magnitude of consolidation for oil sands fine tailings produced using different extraction processes. As part of the overall study, a comprehensive description of physical and chemical characteristics of fine tailings generated by caustic and non-caustic processes was carried out. Ultimately, the influence of these fundamental properties on the compressibility, hydraulic conductivity and shear strength properties of the fine tailings was assessed. The characteristics of the fine tailings are presented in terms of index properties, mineralogy, specific surface area, water chemistry, liquid limits, particle size distribution and structure. A difference in water chemistry was concluded to be the cause of substantial differences in particle size distributions and degree of dispersion of the comparable caustic and non-caustic fine tailings. The degree of dispersion was consistent with predictions for dispersed clays established by the sodium adsorption ratio (SAR) values for these materials. A linear variation of increasing dispersion with increasing SAR up to a SAR value of about 40 has been suggested, above which fine tailings are completely dispersed. The observed dispersed or flocculated structures (viewed using a scanning electron microscope) supported the predictions based on SAR values.

THE tensile properties of steels at elevated temperatures have been studied by numerous investigators,1 primarily for the purpose of determining their suitability for structural uses. Tests with this objective have been confined largely to the temperature range of approximately 20° to 500° C., because of the rapidly decreasing tensile strength at the latter temperature. Tests have also been extended to higher temperatures for the purpose of determining the most suitable forging range. This temperature range is also of theoretical interest. The phenomenon of increased tensile strength and decreased ductility in the so-called "blue-heat" range, approximately 200° to 300° C., is well known. It was suggested to the Bureau early in 1926 that a study of the properties of rail steels in this temperature range might prove of interest in relation to the studies of transverse-fissure failures in rails. There were available from another investigation3 several new rails from several different heats made to approximately the same specification requirements, the complete manufacturing histories of which were known. It was decided to determine, at least in the preliminary series of tests, only the ultimate tensile strength, elongation and reduction of area, because of the difficulty, time and cost involved in determining the proportional limit and yield point at elevated temperatures.
