An important problem in open pit mine planning is that of detennining the optimum ultimate pit limits of the mine. These limits are that contour which is the result of extracting the volume of material which provides the total maximum profit while satisfying certain practical operational requirements such as safe wall slopes. The determination of the optimum pit contour provides information that is essential in the evaluation of the economic potential of the mineral deposit. A number of optimisation techniques are available for determining this contour with the Lerchs-Grossman and the Network Flow methods being the most favoured. Unfortunately, direct application of these techniques to large ore-bodies may cause considerable difficulties because of the computational time and storage requirements. In this paper, we present a strategy for resolving these problems, and the associated pit design software PITOPTIM (incorporating a fast network flow technique) and a data reducer, BOUND. The results presented highlight the speed and power of the software package rivalling the popular Lerchs-Grossman technique. An application of the software for a sensitivity analysis is also presented and discussed.

Recent start-up of the Pinto Valley mine and mill is expected to add to domestic copper mine capacity by some 62,500 tpy. Owned and operated by Cities Service Co.'s Miami Operations, the complex lies approximately 5% miles west of Miami, Ariz. The estimated $100- million project, the largest single construction project ever undertaken by Cities Service, includes the Pinto Valley open pit mine, a 40,000-tpd concentrator, and a 10-mile slurry pipeline that will transport a 28% copper concentrate slurry to a new filter plant located in Miami. Concentrate will be treated nearby at Inspiration Consolidated Copper Co.'s new smelter complex. The current pit design contains reserves of approximately 350 million tons of ore averaging 0.44% Cu. Based on an initial production target of 40,000 tpd ore and 60,000 tpd waste, mine life is estimated at 24 years. The current stripping ratio is 1.5: 1, requiring the ultimate removal of more than 500 million tons of waste and leach-grade material.

Introduction The mine winder is an essential element in the mining of ore in deep level mines and therefore requires a high degree of reliability to avoid interruption of production. Failure of any component on a winder may also be dangerous and expensive to repair. The larger the failure the larger the stoppage. The failure of a winder drum is the ultimate catastrophe, not only because of the cost of replacement, but also because of the lead time in procuring a new drum. Today these types of failure are not as common but many failures have occurred in the past and even today many an old winder is con- sidered for a new and often more arduous duty. As far back as the turn of the century a lot of information had been gathered to try and clear up the complexities of the multi- layering effect of coiling rope under tension onto a drum. Before comparing results obtained by various researchers the nature of the pressure distribution between rope and drum due to multi-layering will be discussed briefly.

Spatial continuity as described by a variogram is a reflection of the underlying mineralisation/geology. Modelling of the spatial continuity (variogram) must account for both the quantitative data (ie sample grades), on which the variogram calculations are based, and the qualitative information as provided by the geological interpretation. An understanding of the geology and the variogram interpretation tie together the sample values and allow us to go beyond the actual data (Journel, 1995). Variography makes geology transportable and allows the geological interpolations to be channelled downstream into mine planning, ultimately affecting the economic decisions surrounding a deposit. As such the process of variography and resource modelling is critical. Thus consistent expert decisions need to be made which force geologists to have a closer look at the available information and the geological interpretations. The aim of this paper is to provide an overview of the latest developments in visualising variography and to demonstrate their usefulness in decisions regarding the spatial continuity of mineralisation. New ideas concerning potential future developments in visualising and modelling spatial continuity through variography are introduced.

The demand for iron ore has increased significantly in recent years, with new iron ore sources being mined to meet this demand. As the composition of sinter blends changes with the availability and cost of iron ore, so too does interest in the impact of new ore types on granulation and ultimately productivity. This paper describes a study into granulating characteristics of seven iron ore types, including various hematite and goethite ores. The effect of ore type on feed moisture requirements, green bed permeability, green bed strength and granule size distribution was examined for single ore blends containing coke, flux and returns. The ore size distribution was varied in these blends and its effect on granulating characteristics examined. It was found that the optimum moisture requirement of the ore was more dependent on ore type than ore size distribution, but ore size distribution (and specifically intermediate particle loading) had a greater effect on green bed permeability. The saturation moisture value for an ore was found useful in predicting both optimum granulation moisture and green bed permeability.

Seven samples of Pennsylvania anthracite from the Bottom Ross bed were analyzed and tested to obtain data on cleaning characteristics, proximate and ultimate analyses, specific gravity, grindability, heating value, and ash softening temperature. Ash content of the samples varied irregularly from 9.0 to 34.4 percent, the range being narrowed to an upper limit of 14.8 percent ash by removing impurities dense enough to sink in a medium with a specific gravity of 1.90. Ash content of the sink material with specific gravity greater than 1.90 ranged from 56.4 to 80.4 percent; corresponding specific gravities were 2.095 to 2.534. Volatile matter contents were indicated to be higher for the ash-forming minerals than for the pure coal substance in the various specific gravity fractions of a given sample. Specific gravities of anthracites with compa¬rable ash contents but from different locations in the bed varied as much as 0.06. The grindability index increased significantly with increasing ash con¬tent of specific gravity fractions from all the samples.

In 1956, Kennecott Copper Corp. instituted a slope mechanics program. Its objective was to obtain effi-ient and safe pit slopes. Since then, Kennecott has onducted a great deal of research into the area, most otably at the Kimbley Pit. This paper, which describes the transitional work at this period and draws from the pertinent experimental work done by others, paves the way for the next step of the program: refining the design process and applying it for profit. The goal of slope mechanics is to achieve efficient and safe pit slopes. In the case of ultimate mine slopes, the objective is to minimize the stripping ratio by steepening the slopes to their maximum stable limit. On the other hand, the inclination of working slopes is normally established by operating space requirements and the function of slope mechanics should be the continuous surveillance of slope conditions to assure long-term stability and provide timely warning of impending slides so that corrective measures may be incorporated in production planning. "A microcomputer-controlled multi-probe K-40 monitoring system was developed internally for the Phase II mill at the Lanigan potash mine. The K-40 probes were mounted in a variety of positions in several process streams, ranging from dry ore on a conveyor belt to brines and slurries. A description will be presented of the objectives, the equipment and the difficulties encountered in correlating results.IntroductionThe successful control and optimization of most metallurgical processes involves monitoring not only physical parameters such as flow rate and temperature, but also the chemical compositions of critical streams. Composition has proven difficult to measure on -line in industrial scale processes. However, in potash processing there is a convenient chemical parameter that has long been utilized to measure in situ the concentration of potassium chloride (KCl). Potassium has a long-lived isotope which is slightly radioactive. K40 decays by beta elimination to Ca40, ultimately radiating a characteristic gamma-ray photon. This gamma emission when detected by scintillation counter can be used to estimate the concentration of potassium in a process stream."

The Bureau of Mines' Oil Shale Data Bank (OSDB) was created in 1976 to serve as a centralized source for the storage, retrieval, and dissemination of technical literature, patents, and information on research projects in oil shale. Thousands of bibliographic references, patents, and research projects relating to the mining of oil shale have been identified, abstracted, and indexed according to selected keyword topics. The resulting data bank listings are contained in three sections, each with a separate keyword breakdown for use in rapidly identifying references pertaining to a specific subject. All references cited in the OSDB were published prior to an established cut-off date of May 1, 1981, when a redirection of Bureau of Mines programs resulted in the loss of project funds and the subsequent phasing-out of data bank operations. The Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines Fimiston Open Pit is mining through a dense network of disused level workings and stopes of varied sizes and orientations. This study investigated the interaction between underground workings and the pit slope stability, in particular for the ultimate pit depth of over 600 metres. Parametric analyses were conducted on the structural and rock mass properties in order to provide realistic input. Several cases in both 2D and pseudo 3D using UDEC were modeled and analyzed to investigate the performance of the rock mass at various mining stages. The concept of equivalent property factor was also introduced to model the 3D behavior using 2D models. Based on the modelling results, the possible failure mechanisms and deformation of the pit walls were assessed. Factors of safety have been derived for the pit slope at different mining stages using the strength reduction technique. The modelling results agree well with pit performance monitoring results to date. The concept and results presented in this paper could be a useful reference for operations with similar circumstances and stress regimes.

The steady growth of the Northwest portion of the United States over the past two decades, and the very rapid development of Northern California, Western Nevada, and Oregon in particular, led the Calaveras Cement Company people to Shasta County, California in 1957. The presence of a large deposit of high calcium carbonate limestone had been recognized for many years, but it required the momentum of an expanding economy to make these long known reserves valuable. This, plus the availability of a reliable supply of fuel in the form of natural gas, and the ready means of shipping the product to the consumer both by highway and railroad, seemed to offer the proper combination to launch a successful venture. The Calaveras Cement Company had been manufacturing cement by the wet process since 1925 at their plant at San Andreas, California. Starting with two small kilns, the plant in Calaveras County started an expansion program in 1945 that ultimately resulted in the plant as it exists today, consisting of five kilns with a combined production of 4.5 million barrels annually.

Aluminum alloys play an important role in the manufacturing of air and ground vehicles. However, with such alloys, corrosion damage is often found on structural components subjected to fatigue loading. The alloying provides large benefit in terms of the high specific tensile strength (ultimate strength/density ratio) to the aluminum alloy but causes the aluminum alloy to be more sensitive to localized corrosion due to complex microscopic heterogeneities such as secondary phases. This paper investigates thermal spray coating namely arc spraying to evaluate the protection against environmentally assisted cracking (EAC) and localized corrosion on Aircraft structural 7075 T651 aluminum alloys. In particular, EAC and pitting corrosion at the interface coating-substrate are a challenge for thermal spray protective coatings on aluminum alloys under cyclic load and immersion. To address these issues, different surface preparation techniques prior to arc spraying were considered such as chemical de-oxidation, laser ablation, shot peening and grit blasting. Results indicate that surface preparation and improved coating process parameters play an important role to provide a coating conferring a protection against both localized corrosion and EAC.

Its mission is to promote responsible and sustainable mining among new generations while fostering a culture of equality and respect. This comprehensive educational program integrates sustainable development goals and includes workshops led professionals and external experts who share their personal stories to inspire students from rural and urban educational institutions to follow their dreams. Additionally, for this year 2024, the project development and implemented an interactive mobile application that educates users about the use of minerals in everyday life through four levels: Minerals in the Home, Minerals in Medicine, Minerals in Transportation, and Minerals in Agriculture. This multi-faceted approach seeks to raise awareness about the importance of mining in Peru’s economic, environmental, and social development, ultimately fostering a new generation of informed and engaged citizens who understand the vital role of mining in a sustainable future.

This document presents a description of the results of a project aimed at producing a broad description of current mining training programs and an evaluation of their effectiveness with respect to reducing mine injuries. Aggregate training and injury data were used to evaluate the overall training effort at 300 mines as well as specific efforts in twelve categories of training course objectives. From such evaluations, recommendations were derived with particular emphasis being placed on identifying program characteristics that tend to be associated with effective training. Recommendations were also formulated with reference to role changes in industry and government interaction with respect to training programs, new or additional training programs, changes in the types of course materials and training methodologies, and recommendations concerning new areas for investigation.

Studies of coal reserves have shown that the total augerable reserve base for the United States is estimated to be five billion tons under the current state of mining technology; the potential reserve base at 850-ft penetration is estimated at 20 billion tons. It is with the idea of improving coal recovery, a basic objective of Project Independence, that new concepts, such as modifications and improvements in current machines and development of ways to recover pillars left by current augering, are required. Unless recovery is improved, these potential reserves amount to lost coal.

In the following pages the writer has endeavored to give an account of the many methods, advantages, and disadvantages of preparing and burning powdered coal. For much of the information jmparted the writer is indebted to various firms in the United States and Canada whose plants he visited, also to the technical press. Manufacturers and operators of coal-fired furnaces can not afford to disregard the possible advantages of pulverizing their coal before burning it. Hence the purpose of this bulletin will be fulfilled if it leads them, after making careful estimates, either to abandon their present method of burning cGal on grates or stokers, and install the pulverizers, conveying system, powdered-coal feeder, and burner best suited for burning powdered coal in their plant, or to reject, as uneconomical, the replacement of their present system of burning coal by a system for pulverizing and burning it. No research work on the combustion of powdered Canadian fuels has been carried out by the Mines Branch, Department of Mines; but if this research work were carried out scientifically by competent engineers, chemists, and physicists, it would show how powderedcoal furnaces and burners should be designed to gi ve an efficiency higher than they give at present.

"INTRODUCTION The Warrior View mine of the Seaboard Coal Corporation is located in Tuscaloosa County on the Warrior River about 14 miles northeast of Tuscaloosa, Ala. The Brookwood bed at this point yields a coal with fair coking qualities, and the product from neighboring mines on this bed has been used for the manufacture of blast furnace coke. The output of the Warrior View mine, however, is used exclusively for domestic and steam-raising purposes.This paper continues the series° of reports on the washability of Alabama coals which are based upon the study of coal preparation in Alabama now being conducted by the U. S. Bureau of Mines and the University of Alabama with the cooperation of the different coal mining companies. This paper contains screen-sizing and float-and-sink tests of a representative sample of run-of-mine coal, and flakiness and crushing tests on certain sizes.Published information on the Brookwood bed is very meager. Fieldner6 gives the proximate and ultimate analyses for a number of seam samples taken from representative mines working this bed. Gandrud and Britton7 show sections of this bed taken at Searles, Ala. They also give the specific gravities of the coal, the bone, and the shale partings.Table 1 give the proximate and ultimate analyses for the 3/4 to 3/16 inch size of raw coal. Table 2 gives the sulphur content and the ash fusibility temperatures of the float-and-sink fractions for this same size. The character of the coal is very uniform throughout the range of sizes produced and, as it was not convenient to have these analyses on all sizes, this size was chosen as being representative of the coal. From the information available it is evident that the coal preparation problem is restricted to one of ash reduction.SAMPLING AT THE MINEAt the Warrior View mine the run-of-mine coal is dumped from the mine cars upon a 3-inch grizzly. The oversize is crushed in rolls set at 24 inches and joins the undersize before being elevated to the raw-coal bin ahead of the jig. The sample was caught at the point where elevates discharges into the raw-coal bin, by taking a proportional amount of the coal at 10-minute intervals over the period of a day's run, The total sample amounting to 2.7 tons was shipped to the laboratory at Tuscaloosa for the washability studies."

Broadly conceived, the demand for electricity depends upon three sets of variables: (i) the growths of the many individual demands for energy services; (ii) the competitiveness of electrically driven technologies in meeting these demands; and (iii) the energy-conversion efficiencies of installed electrical technologies. The first set of variables establishes the size of the potential market; the second, the market penetration of electrical equipment; and the third, the quantity of electricity required to operate the equipment. All forecasts of electricity consumption ultimately depend upon inferred or assumed relationships to describe the future behavior of these variables. This partitioning of the demand-forecasting problem is conceptually useful and will guide the discussion presented in this paper. However, it is also something of an oversimplification. Examined in more detail, the electricity fore-casting problem is exceedingly complex. The variables mentioned above are, in turn, found to depend upon more fundamental sets of demographic technological, resource, and policy variables. The demand projections developed by the major forecasting services are usually developed in terms of these underlying variables, which themselves must be independently forecast.
