Coal, as energy resource, possesses numerous characteristics and properties which all have an influence on its gasification behaviour. The two properties considered as critically important when evaluating a coal source for gasification is its mineral content and slagging behaviour. Research has indicated that slagging formation can be inhibited or even prevented by the addition of a fluxing agent. It is thus of great importance to understand the mineral interaction during gasification in order to select a suitable fluxing agent for the prevention of slagging and clinker formation in the gasifier. The aim of the present project is to evaluate the effect of iron as a fluxing agent and study the transformation of the mineral and added iron during gasification. A pre-determined amount of pure elemental iron (between 2wt% and 20wt%) was added to a base case coal sample in order to study the effect of the addition of iron to the coal. The transformation of the iron in conjunction with the possible iron containing minerals present in the coal was studied by means of Mössbauer analyses. Typical characterisation techniques included proximate analyses, ultimate analyses and ash composition analyses. The ash fusion temperature analyses (AFT) were used to study and predict the slagging behaviour of the iron-spiked coal samples. Even though AFT analyses only provide an average flow property, it gives a good indication of the changes that the iron addition induces on coal properties. FactSage modelling was carried out in conjunction with the Mössbauer and AFT analyses. From the proximate, ultimate and ash composition analyses it was clear that the coal used con-formed to the average characteristics measured over an extended time period. From the AFT values it was seen that an increase in the flow temperature occurred with the addition of pure elemental iron to the coal, which can be of importance for operational purposes as to raise the gasifier temperature and not to have slagging problems to occur in the gasifier. The Mössbauer data show that he-matite is the main Fe-component that forms from the pyrite originally present and from the added iron to the coal, consistent with FactSage modelling, which shows that the partial oxygen pressure determines which mineral species will form. This study opens up new possibilities when considering operational problems experienced in in-dustrial gasifiers. Successful completion of this study and a study to look at reducing conditions in the gasifier will also add to the knowledge that already exists regarding fluxing agents.

"Drilled shaft foundations are widely used for many types of structures, especially for highway bridges, high rise buildings, and costal structures. The lateral design considerations are crucial for those structures that are subjected to lateral thrust forces, winds, waves, and earthquakes. The p-y analysis is the most widely used method for the analysis and design of drilled shafts for lateral load applications in soils. However, existing p-y criteria were developed based on the lateral load tests on small diameter drilled shafts in soils. Although, a lot of lateral load tests have been conducted, there are a limited number of lateral load tests on large diameter drilled shafts embedded in clay. In this paper, a lateral load test on 2.44 m diameter fully instrumented drilled shafts in clay is presented. The site specific p-y curves are derived based on strain gage readings. The existing p-y curves are found to be much softer than the site specific p-y curves. Correspondingly, the deflection at the top of the test shaft under the maximum applied load is predicted to be eight times larger than the measured value using existing p-y criteria. A new p-y criterion is proposed in this paper. The proposed p-y criterion is proven to be able to capture the site specific p-y curves of the load test and to predict closely the deflections at the top of the test shaft. The Route 6 /10 10 Interchange Design/Build project, located in Providence, Rhode Island, involves the design and construction of five (5) new elevated bridge structures to replace and reconfigure the existing interchange and to provide a link between Route 10 northbound and Route 6 westbound. Due to site logistics, headroom restrictions, and depth to bedrock, 50 ton drilled micropiles installed in the deep medium dense sand strata were initially proposed as the deep foundation solution. Post project award, Geosciences Testing and Research, Inc. (GTR) performed various analyses and developed an alternate driven pile solution using steel Tapertube. The results of these analyses indicated that driven steel taper tube and steel pipe piles could develop greater capacities than the drilled micropiles in the granular soil layer, thereby reducing the number of foundation elements, decreasing construction schedule and providing a more cost effective foundation alternative. A comprehensive driven pile load test program was subsequently executed by GTR and the Design Build Team led by Barletta Heavy Division of Canton, Massachusetts, to assess the performance of Tapertube and steel pipe piles, including pile drivability, load-deformation characteristics under static and dynamic loading, and to develop site-specific design parameters in two (2) distinct test areas. The test pile program included dynamic, static compression, tension and lateral load tests on each test pile. Load test measurements were automated with embedded Vibrating Wire Strain Gages (VWSG) to measure load transfer with depth. The execution and results of the successful pile load test program are presented and offer unique case study and valuable data for the use of Tapertube piles on deep foundation projects in the New England region INTRODUCTION The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) Route 6 / Route 10 Interchange is located west of downtown Providence. Originally constructed in the 1950’s as a highway bypass around the historic Olneyville neighborhood, the interchange consists of a series of nine (9) bridges and ramps that serve as a vital east-west link between Interstate 295, 95 and 195. Based on recent bridge rating assessments, seven of the nine bridge structures are rated “structurally deficient”. With many bridge structures shored with temporary supports as many as 15 years ago, the interchange is in critical need of replacement. In 2018, RIDOT awarded the Route 6/10 Reconstruction Design-Build Project to 6/10 Constructors, Joint Venture. Led by Barletta Heavy Division of Canton, Massachusetts, the Design Build team includes O&G Industries, DW White Construction, Aetna Bridge Co. and AECOM. The scope of work includes the replacement of the bridges and ramps, and will provide direct access from Route 10 northbound to Route 6 westbound. Valued at over $400M (US), this is currently the largest project awarded in RIDOT history.

THE Bureau of Mines has been active in promoting the purchase of coal for Government use under specifications that define the requirements in terms of heating value of the coal, expressed in British thermal units, and the com-position as shown by proximate analyses. To these, when required, are added the fusing temperature of ash, Hardgrove grindability index, and the free-swelling index. Under most of these specification contracts the bidders guarantee the quality of coal, and that guaranteed by the successful bidder becomes the standard of his contract. The deliveries are sampled in accordance with instructions 4 issued by the Bureau; the samples are analyzed in the Bureau's laboratory to determine whether the coal is of the quality guaranteed by the contractor and, if it is not, a price adjustment is made. Analyses of delivered coal and "tipple" samples (samples collected at mine tipples as coal is being loaded into railroad cars or trucks) are valuable data for use in evaluating future bids. Moreover, the continuous sampling of coal as delivered is a check on the practical results obtained in burning the coal.

Stringent underwater noise limits at the Fairview Ave. N. bridge replacement on Seattle's Lake Union required an innovative approach to supporting the 470-ft long drill trestle. Screw-in foundations would reliably mitigate noise, but the required 500-kip bearing resistance were an order of magnitude higher than typical helical piles. This paper describes the process of designing, installing, monitoring, and testing 22-inch dia. helical piles 80 feet long with 36- and 42-inch dia. helices. A static load test confirmed that the conventional k-factor design method can be extended to capacities of up to 800 kips. A 375 ft-kip drive mechanism had to be fabricated because no North American equipment could supply the necessary installation torque. Real time installation monitoring and later "re-torque" tests confirm that helical piles gain capacity with time, analogous to driven piles under restrike. Underwater and on-land measurements confirmed very low noise, suggesting the possibility of widespread adoption where similar limits are imposed. Overall, this case history illuminates the need for innovative deep foundation types in response to ever-increasing regulatory constraints.

Australia is now committed to the most significant period of infrastructure investment since the 1960s and the current climate of project finance and public private partnership (PPP) model uncertainty means it is imperative that the affordability and certainty in delivery of infrastructure projects is maximised.In light of the current and forecast levels of infrastructure investment it is worth drawing comparison with a similar period of Australian expansion when the nation’s first railways were constructed. Similarly to over a century ago, we are following a trend in rapid development and are already reaping the inefficiencies that could be avoided with broader technical planning and improved client coordination.The original rail networks were developed by the individual states before they combined to form a Federation of states in 1901. As a result of the adoption of different gauges by 1917 a passenger wanting to travel by train from Brisbane to Perth had to change trains six times.Similarly in 2011, there is little parity between Australian states on the quality requirements (performance specifications) for road tunnels. Differences between states start most significantly with the size of the specified traffic envelopes, thus the size of tunnel required. Where ambiguity and differences exist in project documentation, performance specifi cations (PS) and broad technical requirements for road tunnel projects, any associated risk in interpretation ultimately ends up being incorporated in the bidder’s (constructor’s) final sell price.Whilst not nearly as inconvenient as having to change train at each state border, and largely unnoticed by the general tax paying motorist, this paper examines examples of apparent minor differences in Australia’s recently constructed road tunnels to highlight the differences in road tunnel specifications.The paper identifies how these small differences manifest themselves in major price penalties between projects and further, highlights the need for further specification review, refinement and standardisation across road tunnel jurisdictions to increase road tunnel affordability.

"The use of steel screw piles has greatly increased in recent years because of the advancement in the installation mechanism and its performance under compressive, uplift and lateral loads. In a steel pile system, the strength of pile material limits the end bearing resistance of the pile due to strong subsurface conditions. The installation mechanism of screw pile can reduce the end bearing resistance due to the torque and axial force. However, if the installation mechanism does not reduce the bearing resistance of the pile, another important factor that can reduce its performance is the strength of the helix/wing plate. In this study, the effect of wing plate deformation on the performance of single helix/wing plate pile bearing resistance investigated. A model ground was used to investigate the effect of wing plate deformation. Dry Toyoura sand was used as a ground material and was compacted to denser states of 80% and 92%. The shaft and wing plate material of the pile was the same to actual piles that are used nowadays in Japan. A series of load tests were performed with different wing plate diameters and thicknesses. It was observed that deflection in the wing plate reduces the bearing resistance of the pile. The increase in the thickness of the wing plate was seen to restore the reduced pile resistance due to deflection. It was also observed from the experimental results that the ratio of wing plate diameter to shaft diameter (Dw/Ds) greatly affects the deformation of wing plates, which ultimately affects the end bearing resistance of the pile. The results obtained in this research suggest that the outstand length (Lw) of wing plate should be less than 5.6 times the thickness of wing plate for piles having a large Dw/Ds ratio under strong ground conditions.INTRODUCTIONThe first use of screw pile was almost 180 years ago by Alexander Mitchell. He patented his invention in 1833 with the name “Screw Pile”, and used it for ship moorings. The use of screw piles has since been adopted in various areas such as lighthouses, fencing for agriculture and marine structures. The use of screw piles in civil works started in 1985, after the invention of the hydraulic torque motor, as it eases the installation process. Nowadays, screw piles are used in the foundation of transmission towers, elevators, buildings and many other civil structures.Screw pile has an edge over other steel pile systems due to its high bearing, uplift and lateral resistance. The end bearing resistance of screw pile depends on installation, strength of subsurface material and the pile material. The screw pile is installed by applying torque and axial force. The pile torsional strength should be more than the applied torque and axial force to avoid deformation before reaching the final depth."

The words ""Uncertainty"" and ""Risk"" pervade every discussion about mining exploration and investment. Perhaps these terms are subjectively understood by industry professionals, but objective portrayal of these concepts outside the industry is a woefully undeveloped science. This paper addresses current industry understanding and practice regarding quantitative risk assessment techniques, and provides examples of the application of three of these techniques. Probabilistic techniques for financial risk assessment are valuable adjuncts to conventional financial analysis, and address a range of issues not assessable by any other means. The value of whole-of-project probabilistic risk assessment is currently debatable for decision-making purposes, but is seen as important as a mechanism to focus attention to the critical issues that ultimately impact on project success. The dissection of project capital into risk and non-risk components provides valuable insights into risk characteristics not readily quantifiable in any other way. This technique also provides a framework for more objective ""what if?"" scenario evaluation and for the capital structure of resource projects. Finally, mechanisms for the valuation of undeveloped reserves are examined, and guidelines suggested. The importance of reliability in production cost estimates is highlighted and the impact of early development on reserve valuations is discussed. The importance of economics throughout all stages of the evaluation process is fundamental.

Accurate estimation of resources is one of the major challenges in mineral project evaluation. Contemporary mineral resource estimation practice calls for contribution from several disciplines and execution of several interdependent tasks. 3D estimation domain modelling is obviously one of the most essential components of such a substantial process which forms the basis of this research. The study constitutes a comparative analysis of four major domain modelling techniques; (i) explicit modelling, (ii) implicit modelling, (iii) indicator kriging, and (iv) conditional simulation. It involves comparison of outcomes for alternative scenarios to assess the implications of the modelling decision on resource estimates of a polymetallic massive sulfide deposit located in western Turkey. Thus, identical grade estimation method and parameters are considered to identify the discrepancies arising only from the choice of the domain modelling approach and underlying assumptions. Economic implications are demonstrated in the form of range of outcomes for the extends of the ultimate pit, ore tonnages (min:37.0 Mt, max: 46.7Mt), waste tonnages (min:201.2 Mt, max: 251.2 Mt), stripping ratios (min:5.18, max: 5.71), and total pit values (min: $1.05B, max: $1.45B). Examination of solid models as well as cross-sections revealed that major discrepancies are observed beyond outlying drillholes. Therefore, it has been proposed that assumptions regarding extrapolation distance is the main source of mentioned dissimilarities. Key words: Domain modelling, explicit modelling, implicit modelling, indicator kriging, conditional simulation INTRODUCTION Resource estimation is apparently a challenging process calling for extensive expertise and input from several sources, each of which introducing its related uncertainties. In the last decades, substantial role of quantitative analysis of several forms of risk and uncertainty in evaluating projects’ upside potential and downside risks has been realized. Studies indicated that mining companies have been severely impacted because of not meeting project expectations. As noted by Vallee (2000) “… in the first year of operation after start-up, 60% of mines surveyed had an average rate of production less than 70% of designed capacity”. Several other studies on mining projects also revealed that uncertainties related with the resource model are one of the major contributors of mentioned shortfalls. In this perspective, quantification of uncertainties associated with each component of estimation process is critical. 3D estimation domain models capturing major mineralization controls are the fundamental components of contemporary mineral resource estimation. Domain models are key guiding tools for estimation and are products of a complex process involving many unknowns and assumptions. There exists a number of 3D modelling alternatives which are distinct with respect to complexity, time and effort involved. Acknowledging potential influences on downstream mining practices and relavent economic implications, risks and uncertainties associated with 3D domain modelling are critical yet poorly studied aspects.

Whereas the ultimate world supply of energy minerals-defined as fossil fuels and fissile materials - is controlled by geological factors, the actual supply at any particular time is controlled by economic feasibility, technological innovations and /or political decisions. This paper identifies and discusses the principal uncertainties surrounding the international availability of energy minerals from now until the end of the century. A brief comparison is also made between energy and non-energy minerals. Genuine shortage s of energy minerals are now of a very long-term nature, whereas artificial ones may occur at any time and have a serious effect on the world economy due to the dependence of most OECD countries on imports of energy mineral . This paper argues that events over the last decade, such as the demand for a New International Economic Order, the OPEC increase in crude oil prices and the growing international lobby on environmental issues especially relating to nuclear safety - will progressively lead to a major, long-lasting transformation of the energy scene world wide. This transformation will encompass demand, in terms of conservation and efficiency, the supply mix of the various energy minerals , the supply system and the structure of the different energy industries . It is already affecting the role of governments and reaching into the question of national sovereignty both of developed countries, such as the U.K., Norway and Australia, and the developing countries, thereby making energy minerals a key area of international relations.

"A new condominium project, The Atelier, developed by Pickus Companies located at the corner of Bryn Mawr and Sheridan in Chicago, IL required an earth retention system to protect the surrounding roads, alley, and existing neighboring apartment bui lding during its construction. Slurry Systems, Inc. (SSI) and Ground Engineering Consultants, Inc. designed the earth retention system using cantilevered sheet piling for three of the four sides: two sides bordering major streets and one side bordering an alley. For the fourth side, which borders an existing occupied brick building, a combination of sheet pil ing and AB. CHANCE® helical screw piers were used. SSI was actively involved in the review process of its earth retention system with the City of Chicago and quickly learned that there was no specific code for hel ical piers/anchors. (It appears that this is the case with most metropolitan cities throughout the United States). Consequently, the approval of underpinning for this project became the critical path, as much testing, calculations, meetings, and other details were required prior to its approval.SSI and AB. CHANCE® recognized that this process for underpinning approval must be seen by other contractors/suppliers who wish to use helical piers/anchors in the City of Chicago. Consequently, this project served as an opportunity to work with the City of Chicago and the City's Building Code Committee in furthering the development of the Helical Piers/Anchors Code, Section 1814. INTRODUCTION - HELICAL PIERSDefinition. A helical pier or anchor consists of one or more helix-shaped steel bearing plate(s) attached to a central steel stem (solid bar or pipe), which is installed by rotating or ""torquing"" into the ground. Each helix is attached near the tip, is circular in plan , and is formed into a screw thread with a defined pitch. Helical piers/anchors are pre-fabricated and can derive their load-carrying capacity through both end bearing and skin friction. The helical piers/anchors can be augmented with grout."

A hvab coal was carbonized in a closed system at 600 ° C and 40 to 1 , 200 psig to produce a high- Btu gas and char . By retaining the volatiles within the system, it was possible to virtually eliminate production of tars and oils . Depending on pressure and residence time , yields of combustible gases (72 to 92 percent methane ) amounted to 4,000 to 6,000 cubic feet per ton of maf coal and gross heating values of these gases varied from 830 to 960 Btu per cubic foot . Yields of char (maf ) were about 1,600 pounds per ton of maf coal . Increased residence time favored production of gases but reduced their heating values , whereas increase in pressure resulted in somewhat higher heating values and lower production . Similar effects were observed from the carbonization of a low- temperature tar . If these results could be translated to an economical carbonization process for producing high- Btu gas from coal , the demand for coal could be expanded by 40 to 50 million tons per year . Because of large yields of char , a process of this type would obviously have to be integrated with coal - fired power plants . Fortunately , operations could be conducted at essentially atmospheric pressure as product gas under this condition can be obtained in satisfactory yields and with good quality .

The alliance is in the form of a Rock to Specification (R2S™) service, one of Orica’s Blast Based Services (BBS™). The ultimate goal was to facilitate the rapid expansion of material movement from 26 to 41M m3 (34 to 53M yd3) per annum while maintaining a reliable ore supply to the mill.

One of the important duties of the Bureau of Mines is to sample and analyze coals and to publish the results of such analyses for the information of producers, consumers, and the general public. Numerous publications containing such analyses have been Issued from time to time. Although the chemical properties of a coal as revealed by its proximate and/or ultimate analysis and heating value aid one considerably in visualizing its probable behavior and in determining its usefulness and value for a specific purpose, they do not furnish complete information. The physical properties of a coal, such as its ability to retain its original form without undue breakage or degradation in size under the various conditions of storage and usage, are also of importance in determining its suitability, technically or economically, for a given purpose.

Iron ore is normally sold in bulk at certain specifications. These include iron grade and specific contaminant grades, typically silica, alumina, phosphorous and sulfur. These target grades are normally agreed between the mining company (producer) and the steelmaking company (customer).This study presents an alternative to traditional cut-off grade calculation, using linear programming that maximises the total ore inventories within a predefined mining envelope while meeting the specified targets. Providing a feasible mining sequence that maintains the target grade is not covered in this study.The method was applied to Fortescue’s operations. The complexity arising from differing ore quality within each mining horizon, variable yields and upgrades and the need to control iron and contaminant grades provided a good opportunity to test an alternative method of ore selection. The new method significantly reduced the time spent in cut-off selection and sensitivity analysis, and provided an optimised solution.CITATION:Aros, M and Reilly, L, 2014. "Mineral processing and smelting operations have the reputation of being complex processes. Process operators of these unit operations have acquired from experience and basic training a superficial understanding of the relationships between process output and manipulated variables. This understanding, which is a very valuable know-how for process control and optimization as well as for operator training, is however difficult to extract. This paper describes a time series based approach that can be used to extract this know-how, which can subsequently be used for operator training. The method is illustrated with an example taken from a smelting process.IntroductionThe emergence of Total Quality Management and Statistical Process Control philosophies in the North American industry (Brown, 1991 ), as well as the increasing popularity of the IS0- 900x standard accreditation, provide a strong incentive to review the training procedures for plant operators. The importance of employees training is acknowledged in two of the 14 points of Deming's road to quality (Deming, 1982) as well as by control engineering consultants (Hendricks et al., 1994). However guidelines for the operation of industrial processes are often transferred from an operator to another one with allowance for flexible interpretation of many operating rules. Such transfer is typical of complex industrial processes to which particulate processes of ore dressing and extractive metallurgy belong.Capturing the knowledge of experienced operators is often a difficult task. Cognition engineers are able to extract this knowledge and transfer it into rules that ultimately are implemented into expert systems. Cognition engineers are however not always available and plant supervisors may prefer to keep training as an internal liability. Another difficulty through interviewing of the process operator is its lack of willingness to transfer what he has learned by hard working to other people, whose ultimate goals are to develop computerized applications that may replace him in a near future, or reduce its importance in the production line.This paper shows that time series can be advantageously used to capture the average process understanding of plant operators and to help reviewing training procedures. The method s illustrated with data collected during normal operation of electric arc furnaces and it is shown how the approach has led to a fruitful discussion between process engineers and operators that ultimately provided savings of more that $200,000 per year per furnace. There are 9 furnaces in the studied foundry. Such savings are not the results of application of advanced control strategies nor of ""miracle press button software», but of an improve awareness by engineers and operators of the importance of properly defining the operating procedures to control a process."

To further investigate the potential of precast concrete sets as a support medium for underground mines, the Bureau of Mines designed a five-piece precast concrete drift set for a small opening and tested it to destruction in a straining frame. Twenty-seven tests were made with three sizes of members using three loading conditions. In addition, six tests were made with sets in a distorted configuration, Test results and typical failure patterns are presented. A comparison of results with those previously reported for the three-piece set shows the five-piece set supports considerably larger total loads than does the three-piece set of equivalent cross section designed for the same size of opening. Recommendations are made for improvements in design.
