Widespread high-calcium (HC) limestones in New Mexico and adjoining areas, are low in magnesium, but some units include shale interbeds that would be deleterious for usage in sulfur removal. In southwest New Mexico, southeast Arizona, and adjoining parts of Mexico, limestones in the thick Mississippian Escabrosa, Pennsylvanian-Permian Horquilla, and Cretaceous U-Bar units are HC as are strata in the Mississippian Lake Valley, Pennsylvanian formations, Permian Hueco, and parts of the Permian Capitan Limestone of south-central and southeast New Mexico and west Texas. In north-central and central New Mexico, many limestones in the Pennsylvanian Madera Formation are HC as are some of the Cenozoic travertines. In northwest New Mexico, where the present-day mine-mouth coal- fired power plants occur, there are no HC limestones, but to the north in southwest Colorado some beds of the Mississippian Leadville Limestone and Pennsylvanian Hermosa Formations are HC. HC limestones considered contain at least 95 percent calcium carbonate and less than 3 to 5 percent magnesium carbonate. Limits for other impurities are alumina, 1 percent; silica, 2 percent; sulfur 0.05 percent; phosphorous, 0.02 percent; and iron oxide, about 1 percent. Chemical and physical requirements differ slightly depending upon the ultimate use.

The Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has conducted full-scale explosion experiments, to evaluate the strength characteristics of various seal designs, used for safely isolating worked-out areas in underground coal mines. Large-scale explosion tests conducted within the multiple entry section of PRL's Lake Lynn Experimental Mine (LLEM) is currently the only accepted test method used by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), for deeming a seal design suitable for use in American mines. These explosion tests are labour intensive, expensive to conduct, and can interfere with other critical underground safety and health research programs conducted by NIOSH. The PRL has developed an alternative seal evaluation method, based on a hydrostatic pressure loading concept that can facilitate the in situ testing of seals in an operating mine. Two chambers within LLEM and one within PRL's Safety Research Coal Mine (SRCM) were used for hydrostatic pressure loading various seal designs. The results from these chamber tests compare favourably with those from the large-scale explosion tests in the multiple entries. In addition to testing seal designs at the required 20 psi static pressure level, the chamber test approach also allows for the determination of the seal's ultimate design strength. Six-scaling relationships for predicting the strength of seal designs as a function of entry size are also presented.

Two marine diamond deposits on concession 2b off Namaqualand along the South African Coast, have been systematically mined over the past year by the mv Moonstar. The two deposits, Smith?s Ulcer and Wedge Point Basin, are comparable in morphology, straddled the same water depths and have similar geology yet have given very different recoveries when compared to their respective grade models. These differences are best ascribed to the different style of mineralisation observed within the two deposits which has been directly controlled by the bedrock morphology. The smith?s Ulcer deposit has been formed in a metagreywacke bedrock displaying a strong north-south trending foliation which dips steeply to the west. Consequently the mineralisation is confined to narrow north-south linear trends with limited lateral extent (less than 5m) making extraction extremely difficult and somewhat variable. RE factors (recovered grade versus estimated grade) for this deposit range from 0.5 to 1.1. The Wedge Point Basin deposit is formed in a micaceous metaquartzite with a conjugate southwest northwest joint set, the southwest lineation being the more prominent, and structural foliation dipping gently to the west. The resultant style of mineralisation is confined to basinal features defined by topographical lows and is fairly lateral in extent (in order of 50m). Extraction of the mineralisation from this deposit is less arduous with recoveries more uniform, RE factors are frequently in the range 2 - 3. This style of mineralisation is more in line with what is to be expected from marine alluvial deposits, the nugget effect of diamond concentration being responsible for the high RE factor. The long narrow linear trends observed in Smith?s Ulcer demonstrably require a specialised approach in successfully sampling, modeling and ultimately mining.

In west-central England, 183 m (600 ft) below the Cheshire Plain, lie the evaporate remains of an ancient sea. Stratified into nine beds of salt separated by marl bands, the deposit stretches roughly 21 x 12 km (13 x 7.5 miles) and contains reserves of rock salt estimated as high as 400 Gt (440 billion st). The Winsford Salt Works, one of England's largest underground mines, extracts the Cheshire salt and sells it for use as animal feed, for application in de-icing programs, and as a key ingredient in sodium fertilizer production and a variety of other industrial processes. Because road de-icing is an important market, demand for Winsford's salt varies with the severity of British winters. Design capacity is 2.25 Mt/a (2.5 million/year). However, production peaked at 2 Mt (2.2 million st) in 1987. Over the past five years, annual production has averaged 1.6 Mt (1.7 million st). Run-of-mine salt averages 92.5% NaCl, mixed with about 5% marl. The marl was formed by deposition of a reddish dust blown into the Cheshire basin from deserts in what is now central Europe. Association with the marl adds color to the salt, producing tea-colored crystals that resemble unrefined sugar. Adaptation of coal mining systems Rock salt mining in the Winsford district began at least as early as 1682. Mining at the current site dates from 1844 but was shut down from 1892 to 1928. In the early 1900s, a series of catastrophic collapses and floods plagued and ultimately shut down then-active Cheshire brine-salt producers. Subsequently, Winsford reopened and began adapting mechanized underground coal mining systems to rock salt extraction.

"The mechanical behavior and the fracture characteristics of composites with DGEB/TETA epoxy matrix reinforced with up to 30% in volume of continuous and aligned ramie fibers were evaluated by tensile tests. Specimens with selected thin fibers aligned along the tensile axis were room temperature tested to rupture. The fracture surface was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy. The results showed significant increase in both the ultimate tensile strength and the elastic modulus. The fracture analysis indicated the possible mechanism for the fiber/matrix interaction, which could be responsible for the composite performance.IntroductionSince the middle of last century, polymer composites have substitute many conventional monolithic materials in applications ranging from aerospace to sport [l]. The main advantages of these composites are the low density and flexible properties specially using fiber as reinforcement to suit the mechanical performance requirements [2]. These are usually high strength and stiffuess requirements that could be reached with synthetic fibers such as gloss, carbon and aramid fibers. Its most commonly used example is ""fiberglass"", i.e., a thermoset polymer matrix composite reinforced with glass fiber. Indeed, ""fiberglass"" has a specific strength of the order of 500 MPa.cm3/g, which is the double of the strongest steels like the maraging. This motivated, at earlier times, ""fiberglass"" to replace many conventional materials including wood and natural fiber composites. Today, ""fiberglass"" has a wide range of uses from aerospace systems and appliances to sport and leisure components. However, its fabrication as well as those of any synthetic fiber such as carbon and aramid composites, requires a relatively large amount of energy. Presently, a growing concern exists regarding the consequences to the environmental by gases like C02 associated with both the energy consumption and the processing of synthetic fibers and their composites. These gases are well known responsible for global warming [3]."

For hot mines, the use of mechanical refrigeration machines has become an essential feature of ventilation and cooling systems. Over the last 30 years, considerable effort has been made in developing refrigeration strategies and equipment to provide cooling that is cost-effective, reliable and energy efficient. In addition to these general design requirements it is necessary to take into account project specific factors such as long term mine cooling needs, operating strategy and installation time. This paper examines a number of actual mine cooling installations which illustrate how these features have influenced the design and installations. For many mines, it is known how the cooling requirements will increase as the mine develops, based on the life of mine plan. The design of the cooling installation must cater for both short- and long-term needs. The initial installation (to meet short-term requirements) must form an integral part of the ultimate cooling installation and as additional equipment and refrigeration machines are installed, it is necessary to ensure that the system remains cost-effective, reliable and energy efficient at all stages. For many mines, refrigeration machines are installed on surface and either operated near-continuously, or for the summer months only. Different maintenance strategies and policies with regard to standby equipment are highlighted for three mine installations. In spite of developments in cooling strategy, the cost of providing refrigeration remains expensive and many mines delay the introduction of refrigeration, as long as possible. When it is finally accepted that refrigeration is absolutely necessary, it is frequently necessary to æfast trackÆ the installation. To minimise site erection time and meet installation deadlines, factory pre-assembly and standardised modular equipment are widely used.

The minerals industry contributes to the economic growth, prosperity and quality of life of nations, particularly in areas where there might be limited opportunities for employment in other sectors. However, notwithstanding their economic importance, the minerals extraction and processing industries are considered to have significant impacts on the surrounding environment. In recent years many mines have implemented modern monitoring technology and modelling of the monitored environmental parameters to provide scientifically proven indicators about the state of the environment. The flexibility required by the minerals industry to respond dynamically to a changing natural, social and economic environment has become a major consideration. Whilst the notion of continuous improvement is embodied within most environmental management systems, what is now required is a structured audit trail which tracks the flow of resources through the production process to the ultimate environmental impact associated with their consumption, transformation and disposal. Imperial College is coordinating an EC funded project, which is developing a methodology to minimise the ?full life-cycle? impact of metalliferous mining projects, adopting an integrated approach to production and process design, and the costs involved. In order to develop a life cycle assessment (LCA) system that will incorporate different types of data related to the minerals extraction operations, a data inventory was designed and coded in an object-relational database model. The calculation procedures accounting for the input/output balance of the alternative scenarios for mining production, processing, waste disposal, monitoring, and their financial implications are being programmed into a software system. This paper presents the rational and innovative aspects of this work. The methodology developed for the life cycle database is illustrated for the mining production and gaseous emissions components of the system.

"This paper compares thermodynamic modelling results with those obtained for copper sulphide removal from aqueous solution in both continuous and batch experiments at laboratory scale. Sulphide precipitation has been demonstrated to be an effective method for heavy metal removal. The advantages are the high degree of metal removal at low pH, low quantities of sludge formation, the ease of de-watering and low reactor retention time due to high reactivity of sulphides. However, the low solubility of sulphide species can lead to spontaneous nucleation of fines, which are difficult to remove.Theoretical modelling was carried out using ASPEN Plus™ and OLI systems Inc ESP process. Both simulators were used to calculate copper sulphide recovery and residual aqueous copper concentrations as a function of pH. The predictions were then compared with experimental results. Both simulations predicted that all of the inlet copper would precipitate as sulphide CuS(s) over the entire range of pH and sulphide: copper molar ratios investigated. The simulation results were strongly influenced by the number of chemical species and the nature of the thermodynamic data taken into account in the model.The continuous experimental studies were carried out in a fluidised bed reactor (FBR). Copper sulphate was reacted with sodium sulphide and the solid precipitated directly onto the pellets in the FBR. The use of sulphide was motivated by high sulphate levels in local acid mine drainage and the ultimate integration of the metal removal process with a biological sulphate reducing process that produces an aqueous sulphide stream.A maximum dissolved copper removal of 99.6% (AAS analysis) and a total removal efficiency of 95.8% (dissolved copper minus fines) were achieved. Stoichiometry of the precipitate was determined from SEM/EDAX analysis (atomic percentages) and was close to 1/1, irrespective of the operating conditions."

Investment in mining and related process facilities will be more costly and complex in the 1980s than ever before. Interest rates and inflation are soaring; regulations are expanding; and in order to achieve economies of scale, plant facilities and mines are getting larger. As the pace quickens, the time/cost circuit closes around the resource owner or developer. Larger modern projects cost more money and take more time to build. The longer it takes to bring a project onstream, the more it costs in interest, escalation, and lost production. One solution to the time/cost squeeze is to take advantage of systems developed by major contractors serving the mining industry. These contractors have been serving clients in planning and executing large and small projects for many years. They have developed systems which, if applied at an early point in the project's life, can be a significant benefit in development of mineral resources. The systems involve performance of feasibility studies, economic evaluations, and the project installation itself. First the Feasibility Study Feasibility studies can minimize risk through systematic evaluations while progressing toward the ultimate objective-an operating plant. Normally, studies are initiated with a minimum amount of specific information and a maximum number of as¬sumptions. Through the course of the study program, assumptions are continuously confirmed, refined, or rejected by facts until a sound basis for decision is available. High on the list of cost effective tools for evaluation is the use of a geostatistically derived sampling program that provides a highly accurate ore reserve estimate for economic evaluation. When a predetermined sample of data from the drilling program and bench-scale or pilot-plant tests are received, a detailed feasibility study may be started. During the latter part of the twentieth century exploitation of mineral resources, and gold mining in particular, experienced a resurgence in Europe, with major mining houses and many junior companies involved in exploration and subsequent mine development. Gold projects in particular were actively encouraged and exploration programmes and permitting studies initiated in more than 15 countries, both within the European Union (EU) and the former eastern bloc. During the initial period, governments in many countries provided active support. Following a series of negative environmental mining incidents in the latter part of the century public opinion, often ill-informed, led to political pressure to withdraw governmental assistance. This in turn resulted in the revocation of exploration licenses, and ultimately to the failure to develop a number of potentially world-class mines within the region. Despite these setbacks, gold production in Europe continues, and is probably higher now than 20 years ago. The mining industry is currently coming to terms with both changing attitudes of governments, and the increase in scope and prescriptive nature of legislation. Recent experiences, particularly in Greece and Turkey, exemplify the problems faced by the industry in the region, which are causing major mining companies to reconsider future activities in Europe. The paper presents an overview of European gold mining and its environmental performance in the context of international practice, new legislation, and public perception of mining generally. The rationale of governments in withdrawing support for the industry is questioned, and the feasibility of achieving sustainability where there is no level playing field globally is reviewed. The question is posed to governments, regulators and mining companies alike as to whether there is a future, not only for gold mining, but for the minerals industry in general, within the EU.

QUITE generally an increase in the temperature tends to bring a system closer to ideality. It is reasonable as a first approximation to consider that the excess free energy will vary linearly with the temperature, or: where t may be defined as the "characteristic temperature" of the solution, or the temperature at which the system would become ideal if the results at T were linearly extrapolated. It must be emphasized that consideration of this hypothetical property is an appeal to intuition rather than an established physical concept. The order of magnitude of 7 for dilute solutions will depend on the nature of the solvent; a value of 3000° + 1000°K may be suggested for ordinary metallic solutions. Specimens of glass, plexiglass, and naturally occurring minerals were irradiated by a 15-joule ruby laser pulse to determine criteria for the fracture of nonmetallic solids by internal thermal stresses. Fracture did not occur in those specimens with either a very high or very low internal absorptance or with a high spectral reflectance. If significant amounts of melting and vaporization do not occur at the surface of irradiation, the specimen will fracture if a derived 11fracture stress" exceeds the ultimate tensile strength of the specimen. The purpose of this investigation was to determine criteria for the fracture of nonmetallic solids by internal thermal stresses which are caused by absorption of laser irradiation. A laser produces a very short pulse of light which has a high energy density distributed over a very narrow part of the visible spectrum. The laser system used in this investigation had an energy output of 15 0 joules at a wavelength of 6940 A. Fracture in a non-metallic solid, then, would be caused by the absorption of light energy by that solid, and subsequent conversion of this energy to heat or mechanical energy. Fracture is caused by internal stresses that result from rapidly imposed nonequilibrium thermal gradients. ANALYSIS OF CONDITIONS FOR FRACTURE BY LASER IRRADIATION For this analysis, the laser beam is assumed to be circular and centered on the junction of the major and minor axes of a rectangular specimen. Problems discussed and research opportunities identified during the workshop in the major areas of 1) flocculation, 2) flotation, 3) leaching and magnetic separation are summarized below. I. FLOCCULATION Problems Practical problems caused by unintentional flocculation or dispersion were described in the papers that dealt with iron ore processing, selective flocculation, fine coal processing, phosphate processing and potash processing. Ideas generated during the discussions ranged from the very practical suggestion that a conscious effort be made to transfer knowhow from the experienced clay industry to the metals and fuels-from-slimes industry. . . , to the familiar appeals for omnipotent theoretical developments. There was surprising recurrence of some questions in many contexts. Recurring questions are emphasized here rather than commodity-specific problems because their answers would serve a wider clientele usage. There is indeed no objection and some advantage to commodity-specific research, however, provided the proposed project is planned with full cognizance of transferable knowledge in other commodities, and of the possible usefulness of these results in other areas. Research Needs Most of the questions or research opportunities can be classified into three groups: a) water chemistry, b) dewatering, and c) flocculation theory. Other classifications are possible and probably useful. In each group there is a clear need for outwardly esoteric theoretical research a clear application of that work to current practical problems. Higher priority should be given to proposals for theoretical research which explicitly show the expected ultimate usefulness of the result. Likewise, proposals for applied research should demonstrate cognizance of applicable theory. Both of these types of projects could profit from collaboration among industrial, university and government personnel.

Some of the early experiments on the oxidation temperature of coal1 were undertaken in England in connection with a study of self-heating, or spontaneous combustion. It was then suspected that coals with low oxidation temperature were most likely to ignite by self-heating, but further experiments showed that many additional factors were involved. The oxidation temperature has importance as a physical property or characteristic of the coal. While only a few of the physical properties have been studied, they appear to have basic significance2 in the ultimate classification of all coals. When reliable data become available on the oxidation temperatures, as determined by standard and adequate methods, it should provide an additional basis for classification and comparative evaluation. Oxidation Temperature Defined For such a heterogeneous substance as coal is known to be, no simple definition of oxidation temperature can be established on a theoretical basis. If coals were homogeneous and of simpler structure, the accepted definition of "ignition temperature " as applied to simple gaseous mixtures might be adopted; that is, the temperature at which self-heating of the mixture sets in. But most coals self-heat slightly even at storage temperature, as evidenced by spontaneous combustion, and the definition for gases cannot be applied to coals with any exactness. By subjecting coals to suitable experimental conditions various oxidation characteristics can be obtained and examined for critical or significant stages of the oxidation process. Oxidation temperature itself must then be defined on the basis of such experimental results. Experimental Methods Attempts to determine critical points in the temperature functions of coal undergoing oxidation have resulted in the following experimental methods:

An investigation was performed to determine the sequence of events which caused the 1987 surface subsidence and related damage to several homes in Walker County, Alabama, USA (see Figure 1). Surface affects compared to mine maps indicated the subsidence to be mine related. However, two coal seams had been worked under this area. The upper seam, the American seam ranged from 250 to 280 feet beneath the surface in the area in question. It was mined-out before 1955 by room-and-pillar method leaving in place narrow-long pillars to support the overburden strata, and abandoned in 1955. The lower seam, the Mary Lee seam, ranged from 650 to 700 feet beneath the surface. The Mary Lee seam had been abandoned in 1966 and subsequently became flooded. The dewatering of the Mary Lee seam workings in 1986 caused the submerged pillars to be exposed to the atmosphere. Due to multiple seam mining and the fact that workings had been inundated then dewatered, a subsurface investigation ensued to determine the sequence and ultimate cause of surface subsidence. Core sample tests with fracture analysis in conjunction with "down-the-hole" TV camera inspections provided necessary information to determine that the subsidence started in the lower seam and progressed through the upper coal seam to the surface. Evidence from the investigation program established that dewatering of the lower seam workings caused the marginally stable support pillars and the roof to collapse. This failure triggered additional subsidence in the upper seam which broadened the area of the influence at the surface.

THE continual improvements in. the two extremes of the drilling, unit, the drill and bit, have prompted critical examination of the drill steel, the weak link of this drilling unit. Obviously, little is to be gained from the betterment of the drill and bit if the drill steel which transmits the force needed for drilling from the machine to the bit cannot stand long hard service. The technology of the bit has advanced from the integral type to steel detachables, thence to the tungsten carbide insert. The carbide insert is the most significant advance in the bit, bringing it to the level of a machine tool with its performance records under constant surveillance. Long steel changes have become advantageous because the carbide bit will drill greater footages without replacement than did the steel bit: The development of the tungsten carbide insert opened new fields of endeavor in drilling with percussion drills here- to fore known, but limited by the steel bit. After the introduction of the tungsten carbide bit, drill manufacturers began promotion of long feed shells, lighter drifters and stopers, and easily handled auxiliary equipment. Ultimately this promotion of better equipment was intended to increase the bit-against-rock time of the drill shift. Advantages of the uninterrupted drilling period of a long steel change and faster setup time of lighter drill machines are lost when the shank fails in the machine, rod failure requires continual changing, or the bit breaks off in the hole. When exploration shows a mineral deposit to be of importance, the subsequent work of defining the limits or boundaries of the ore body and preparing it for the extraction of the mineral is termed development (Young, 1946). In underground mining, development also connotes the work that is involved in opening up a deposit preparatory to stoping or productive operations. In this section, mine development is defined to include all studies and operations that will enable a sound evaluation of an explored ore body from the technical and financial standpoints. Though the ultimate objective of all mine development activities is the same, the scope and detail of these activities vary depending on the type of ore body (e.g., flat bodies, lenses and sheets, massive deposits, narrow veins, and bedded deposits), and the method of working the deposit (e.g., under- ground or surface methods or a combination of both of the methods). Therefore, the various contributions in section 3 address such topics as long-range planning, feasibility studies, and valuation for many types of ore bodies and different mining methods. This introductory review is divided into three major parts. In the first part, long-range planning aspects are briefly discussed with .an emphasis on current trends that affect mine planning. In the second part, an overview is provided of the contents in the mine development and valuation section. In the last part, remarks are made on the status, scope, and future of quantitative and computer methods in mine planning and development.

The need for a separate ventilation department within the management team was recognized by the management of U. S. Pipe and Foundry before the company was purchased by Jim Walter Corporation in January, 1970. Because the coal beds of the deep underground coal properties owned by Jim Walter Resources lay 1300 to 2200 feet below the surface, efficient mine ventilation practices are essential through shaft openings varying from 16 to 22 feet in diameter. The extremely high methane gas quantity indicated to be in the coal bed because of the depth of cover and documented by various U. S. Bureau of Mines tests and demonstrated by early mining proved the need to implement this early management decision. At U. S. Pipe and Foundry mine ventilation was a function of the Mining Engineering Department with ventilation personnel assigned to the mine receiving their day to day work assignments from the mine manager or mine foreman. At Jim Walter Resources, the General Manager - Ventilation reports to the Senior Vice President, Mining Engineering, who reports directly to the President, Mining Division, Figure 1 (Company Organization Chart). Position descriptions are static; however positions are dynamic and consequently the degree of emphasis of specific duties and responsibilities change depending not only upon the aptitude of the individual performing the job but also upon his ability to meet the needs of his supervisors; and ultimately upon his ability to react to the economic forces directing our society. The following describes the duties and responsibilities of the General Manager - Ventilation, Figure 2.

Since prehistoric times, gold has been sought for its beauty and its unusual physical and chemical properties. Early in the dawn of civilization it became the ultimate unit of value, and for at least 6000 years it has been used to barter for other commodities. It has been prospected for, treasured and made into works of art and personal adornment. From time to time, it has even been the object of conquest. Because of its predominant role as a basis for money in recent centuries, economists have come to think of gold solely in these terms. Gold, however, has physical and chemical properties that make it one of the most useful metals in the modern world. It is the most ductile metal known. An ounce of it can be drawn into a continuous wire over 35 miles long. It is also so malleable that an ounce of it can be beaten into films 0.00001 in. thick covering 68 sq ft of surface. It has a density of 19.3 and is so heavy that 1 cu ft of it weighs more than half a ton. Gold is nonmagnetic and has a high electric conductivity that is only slightly less than that of silver and copper. Gold is so inert to all the chemicals found in nature that gold coins and jewelry buried beneath the soil or at the bottom of the sea for thousands of years appear to be as bright and perfect as when they were first immersed. Finally, gold has an extremely high reflectivity of both light and infrared rays.

With the post-war expansion of mmmg activities on its Western group of mines, the management of Lake View and Star Limited has commenced a project for the improvement of underground ventilation.The major part of this project is to provide adequate return airways for the ventilation of the deep levels. To this end, the Ivanhoe South Extended shaft is being enlarged, and ultimately an exhaust fan with a capacity of 180,000 cu. ft. of air per minute will be installed at the shaft collar.Prior to 1932, the shaft was used exclusively for baling water from the 800 and 2,000 ft. levels. These two levels are the only ones connected to workings from the Horseshoe lease. After the installation of pumping plant at the Horseshoe Main Shaft, baling was discontinued, and the water was graVitated from dams to the pumps on the 1,000 and 2,000 ft. levels.Water makes into the shaft, through a series of fault planes, between the 600 and 1,500 ft. horizons. The total flow is 16 gal. per minute, of which approximately 7 gal. per minute graVitates to the 800 ft. level. As a big proportion of the water dropped uncontrolled through the shaft, a downcast current of air approximating 20,000 c.f.m. was induced. This air ventilated a limited area of workings in the Horseshoe lease, between the 2,000 and 2,360 ft. levels.In 1938, it was decided to reverse the direction of the airflow in the shaft.
